• Target: Jacobo Árbenz, the democratically elected President of Guatemala.
• Reason: Árbenz enacted land reforms that redistributed unused land from the massive US-based United Fruit Company to impoverished peasants. His administration’s inclusion of local communists led Washington to fear a “Soviet beachhead” in Latin America.
• Outcome: The CIA supplied and directed a small mercenary force led by Carlos Castillo Armas. Árbenz was forced to resign, and Guatemala subsequently endured decades of civil war and right-wing dictatorships.

In April of 2018, the U.S., U.K., and France launched more than 100 missiles at the former Assad regime in Syria over allegations that it had committed a chemical attack against civilians, in the town of Douma.

The bombing took place before inspectors from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) conducted an investigation into what really happened in Syria.

The evidence for a chemical attack at the time was based on video and images put out by CIA-backed rebel groups who controlled Douma at the time.

Videos and photos released showed over 40 civilians dead and foaming at the mouth in an apartment building, and cylinders on the roof of an apartment and on a bed in an apartment, alleged to be cylinders containing a chemical weapon which killed the civilians.

In March of 2019, the OPCW released a report which largely lined up with the narrative of a chemical attack in Douma.

While the report said there was no evidence of sarin gas or other nerve agents used in Douma, writing that the “team did not observe any major key precursors for the synthesis of chemical weapons agents, particularly for nerve agents such as sarin, or vesicants such as sulphur or nitrogen mustard” the report asserted that there was evidence for a chlorine gas attack in Douma, writing, “Regarding the alleged use of toxic chemicals as a weapon on 7 April 2018 in Douma, the Syrian Arab Republic, the evaluation and analysis of all the information gathered by the FFM—witnesses’ testimonies, environmental and biomedical samples analysis results, toxicological and ballistic analyses from experts, additional digital information from witnesses—provide reasonable grounds that the use of a toxic chemical as a weapon took place. This toxic chemical contained reactive chlorine. The toxic chemical was likely molecular chlorine.”

Soon after, however, critical evidence suppressed from the investigation began being released to Wikileaks.

The suppressed evidence not only showed that experts “ruled out” the idea of Chlorine gas being used in Douma, but strongly suggested that the massacre in Douma was a false flag event carried out to trigger Western intervention.

Among the suppressed evidence were the minutes of a meeting with toxicologists who “ruled out” the possibility that Chlorine was used in Douma.

The minutes from the meeting read, “With respect to the consistency of the observed and reported symptoms of the alleged victims with possible exposure to chlorine gas or similar, the experts were conclusive in their statements that there was no correlation between symptoms and chlorine exposure. In particular, they stated that the onset of excessive frothing, as a result of pulmonary edema, observed in photos and reported by witnesses would not occur in the short time period between the reported occurrence of the alleged incident and the time the videos were recorded (approximately 3-4 hours).”

The toxic chemical leaking from a large storage tank in Garden Grove is methyl methacrylate, or MMA – a highly hazardous substance that can pose significant health and safety risks depending on exposure, officials said.

Methyl methacrylate is used to produce shatter-resistant acrylic glass, paints, adhesives, resins and plastics. Authorities describe it as both highly toxic and highly flammable, with the potential to become explosive under certain conditions.

Orange County fire officials said the incident involves a large volume of the chemical, with estimates of up to 7,000 gallons spilling from the tank. The Orange County Fire Authority noted that incidents involving this type of chemical are rare, with limited case studies available to guide response efforts.

When RaDonda Vaught got her first speaking request, it had been a year since that day in a Nashville courtroom, when she listened as a jury read her guilty verdict for negligent homicide and neglect of an impaired adult.

That was in 2022. Vaught was sentenced to three years of probation for administering the wrong medication and accidentally killing a patient at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2017.

She also lost her nursing license. So Vaught became a full-time farmer. She and her husband live on a small sheep farm in Bethpage, Tennessee, tucked in the rolling hills north of Nashville. They sell eggs at farmers markets on Saturdays and supply meat to local butchers and restaurants.

The controversial trial had been national news, and now the healthcare industry wanted to hear from her.

Onstage, Vaught confronts the painful and embarrassing details directly, often choking back tears when talking about the patient who died — Charlene Murphey.

It wasn’t just one mistake that led to the death.

A doctor had ordered a sedative called Versed to settle Murphey’s claustrophobia before an imaging procedure. Vaught typed “VE” into the search function to retrieve Versed from the electronic medicine cabinet. When it did not dispense, she overrode the system.

In Vaught’s trial, fellow nurses testified that during a time when the hospital was upgrading some of its technology, they could use overrides to bypass delays.

When Vaught took that step, one of the drug options available was vecuronium, a powerful paralytic. Vaught overlooked multiple warnings about the danger of vecuronium, including on the bottle’s cap, which said “Warning: Paralyzing Agent,” according to court records.

Vaught administered the vecuronium and also left the patient alone.

While not disputing most of the facts, Vaught pleaded not guilty to all charges, claiming there were other factors, such as a new electronic health record system that was causing widespread problems in the hospital. A lead investigator for the prosecution testified in the criminal case that Vanderbilt also shared some responsibility.

As previously reported by KFF Health News, Vanderbilt did not initially report the error to regulators as required and told the medical examiner that the patient died of natural causes. The medical center fired Vaught and negotiated a settlement with the Murpheys that keeps the family from talking publicly about her death.

Once the case became a criminal matter, though, the details entered the public record. Vaught is not bound by the hospital’s settlement, allowing her to share whatever she feels comfortable sharing with whomever she wants.

A Chinese woman who has planted trees in the deserts of Inner Mongolia for decades has contacted an American man who donated US$5,000 to her and invited him to visit a forest that came into being because of his funding.

Yin Yuzhen, 60, was awarded as a National Model Worker by China’s State Council in 2000 for her long-term anti-desertification efforts.

Hailing from a poor family in northwestern Shaanxi province, Yin married a man who lives in Maowusu Desert in Inner Mongolia in the 1980s.

The desert, which is also known as Ordos Desert, is one of four major sandy lands in the country.

Since then Yin and her husband engaged in planting trees there by overcoming challenges brought by drought and high winds.

After Yin’s persistent efforts were reported by state media CCTV in 1999, Ronald Sakolsky, who taught English at Luoyang No 2 Foreign Language School in central Henan province at the time, was moved by her and donated US$5,000 to Yin.

“I have never seen such a big amount of money before. It made me surprised,” Yin told the news portal The Paper.

“I used the money to buy more saplings and planted more trees. When Mr Sakolsky visited me, he saw me planting trees in the desert. Seeing the land filled with yellow sands, he shook his head, saying ‘impossible, impossible’,” she recalled.

Those saplings have turned into more than 50,000 big trees, said Yin.

In early May, Yin asked the Henan school to find Sakolsky. On May 17, Bai Fan, vice-principal of the school, called Sakolsky, telling him that the saplings had grown into big trees.

“Yin Yuzhen and her family invite you and me to see the forest. They miss you a lot. They are looking forward to seeing you in the desert in Inner Mongolia,” said Bai on the phone.

Sakolsky replied: “That would be awesome. I cannot wait.”

The current personal details of Sakolsky were not released in the report.

“Mr Sakolsky, we would like to invite you to come back to China to witness how the US$5,000 you donated many years ago has become a large forest,” said Yin.

It is not clear when Sakolsky’s trip to China will be made.

The story has attracted widespread attention in China.

• “This is really moving. I am touched by both parties’ kindness, trust and perseverance,” said one internet user.
• Another person said: “It is a great example of folk friendship between China and America. I expect to see the follow-up of their story.”

By the end of 2024, 53 per cent of China’s manageable desertified land has been effectively treated, resulting in a net reduction of 65 million mu (about 4.3 million hectares) of desertified land area, according to the National Forestry and Grassland Administration.

The latest shoddy product Trump is selling is the Iran War. When that folds or fails, perhaps a war on Cuba will be next. We get sold these “products” irrespective of their quality and regardless of whether we want or need them. As long as they’re making money for someone—especially if that someone is Trump—these shoddy wars will go on.

LeMay was proud of the night attacks on Tokyo in which, as the postwar U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey put it, “probably more persons lost their lives by fire at [sic] Tokyo in a six-hour period than at any time in the history of man.”

That LeMay succeeded in his task was no accident. Indeed, it was by design, since the first waves of bombers dropped oil-gel fire accelerants, and subsequent waves flew so low that they were able to target fleeing crowds of civilians and napalm rivers to cut off escape routes.

He was peevish and often childish when he didn’t get his way. If anyone dared to challenge him, he would light a cigar and blow smoke in their face. When he was really angry, he would walk into a private toilet attached to the Joint Chiefs meeting room, urinate with the door open and then flush repeatedly to annoy the members seated next door. He would then return to the table as if nothing had happened.

When the Cuban Missile Crisis broke out in October 1962, LeMay enthusiastically pushed Kennedy to go to war by sending the U.S. Navy and the SAC to surround Cuba and if need be, “fry it.” Said LeMay: “We should give the Russians the ‘Sunday punch’ before they do it to us.” After Kennedy wisely resisted the recommendations, and the crisis was resolved peacefully, LeMay called it “the greatest defeat in our history.”

LeMay’s stance toward Vietnam was typically hardline. Although he argued strenuously early on in the Vietnam War for a more rapid and decisive involvement, he was ignored. In his autobiography “Mission With LeMay: My Story” (1965), he wrote: “My solution to the problem would be to tell [the North Vietnamese Communists] frankly that they’ve got to draw in their horns and stop their aggression or we’re going to bomb them into the Stone Age.”

Coyote and Golden Eagle

Coyote was watching Eagle one day. He saw Eagle soaring on up drafts near a high cliff at Ashnola. Eagle would swoop down, scream and ride the drafts back up, really enjoying himself. Coyote watched and watched.

Then he said to himself, “Those are my ways.” In this frame of mind, he climbed all the way up the cliff… all the while watching Eagle, and thinking to himself, “Those are my ways.” It was hard work, but he was determined to get to the top. Finally, after climbing all day, he got to the top of the cliff.

He walked to the edge and jumped off, intending to catch an updraft and soar. With his skinny arms and legs, however, he just plummeted down. He tried frantically to flap his arms and twirl his tail, but nothing helped him fly. He continued to plummet down the sheer cliff face. He became so afraid that he screamed and pooped all the way to the bottom, where he was splattered to pieces. A long white streak from the top to the bottom remains on that cliff to remind us of Coyote’s journey.

Sometime later, Coyote’s brother, Fox came along. Fox had heard that Coyote’s foolishness had caused his death again. Fox carefully gathered up all the bits and pieces of Coyote that he could find, a few hairs, a tooth, a piece of bone and so on. When Fox was satisfied that he had all the bits it was possible to find, he breathed into the assemblage, and then stepped over it four times. The pile then transformed itself into Coyote. Coyote sat up, rubbed his eyes, and chastised Fox for waking him up. Coyote said to Fox, “I must have dozed off for a few minutes, and then you’re waking me up!” Fox just shook his head, as Coyote carried on his way as if nothing had happened.

The Jews in Asch’s stories are preoccupied with materialism and sexuality on the one hand, and with redemption and pardon appeals on the other hand, accompanied by a profound sense of sin and guilt. Asch first provoked rage and controversy when he published a play called “The God of Vengeance”, now also playing in the Israeli Cameri Theater. The play was about a seemingly religious family, the father an observant Chasid who tries to maintain a descent appearance of a good family, while secretly running a brothel in his basement, unaware that his daughter fell in love with one of the women he pimped. Though highly successful in Europe, the American Jewry resented the play, fearing it might arouse Anti-Antisemitism, and protested against it. Shalom Asch benefited from the protest – he was famous as a young trailblazer, gradually turning into one of the famous Yiddish authors in the world. His books were translated to various languages and reached even non-Jews, who acknowledged his literal talent and originality. Some referred to him as “the Yiddish Dickens” (or the Jewish Dickens), especially for his focus on the lower classes.

At the same time, Asch had a bitter dispute with the orthodox society, due to an affair that took place in 1907, when a Jewish baby died in Warsaw before his circumcision, and the burial society (Chevra Kadisha) insisted on circumcising him before burial, in spite of the parents’ objection. Asch wrote harshly against the Chevra Kadisha, condemned the Brith ceremony they insisted on and called it a barbaric act, and published it in a Polish, slightly Anti-Semitic magazine. His popularity was not damaged, though. He was still the leading Yiddish writer, choosing each time a surprising topic: Jewish Anusim in Spain, or the false messiah Shabtai Zvi, to mention just two. He visited the land of Israel several times, lived mainly in Europe, and at the eve of the second World War he immigrated to the United States.

His reaction to the attacks against him made it even worse. Not only did he not apologize, he started to talk about Jesus as a true messenger from God, and implied he could be a true messiah. And not only that, he wrote a sequel book called The Apostle, dedicated to the life of Paul, the apostle who shaped Christianity as a new religion. Whereas Jesus was somewhat accepted as a moral figure, Paul was way too much – the man who claimed that God has abandoned the Jews, that circumcision and Mitzvot were no longer required – such a character could not pass as a Jewish author’s protagonist. Asch was looked upon as a Jew who converted his faith to Christianity.

He was born in 1980 in Haspin, an Israeli settlement in the occupied Golan Heights, and raised in Beit El, a hardline ideological settlement in the West Bank.

He studied at Mercaz HaRav Kook, the yeshiva considered the theological center of religious nationalist Zionism.

He obtained a law degree from Ono Academic College. He has publicly claimed to hold a master’s degree in public and international law from Hebrew University of Jerusalem; the university has no record of him completing it.

Fucking Zelensky-like: Smotrich was born in Haspin, a religious Israeli settlement in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, and grew up in the Beit El settlement, deemed illegal under international law, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelenskyy was born into a Jewish family on 25 January 1978 in Kryvyi Rih, an industrial city in the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic of the Soviet Union. His mother, Rymma Zelenska, is a retired engineer, while his father, Oleksandr Zelenskyy – a professor and computer scientist – is the head of the Department of Cybernetics and Computing Hardware at the Kryvyi Rih State University of Economics and Technology. Like a common criminal, he exercised his right to remain silent for three weeks.” Ilan called him a “Jewish terrorist.” No charges were filed — reportedly because the Shin Bet preferred not to expose its sources. Smotrich has denied any connection to the 700 liters and described his arrest as a point of pride.

• Military spending produces an average of 5 jobs per $1 million. The same investment in other sectors creates more employment – nearly 13 jobs in education, 9 in healthcare, and 7-8 in infrastructure and clean energy.

• From 2020 to 2024, private firms received $2.4 trillion in contracts from the Pentagon, approximately 54% of the department’s discretionary spending of $4.4 trillion.
• The expanding tools of political influence used by the arms industry include extensive lobbying, millions in campaign donations, the revolving door, funding think tanks, and involvement in government advisory committees.
• U.S.-backed Israeli military operations since Oct. 7, 2023 will lead to far higher indirect death than direct death rates.
• Over the course of the war in Afghanistan (2001-2021), 24% of U.S. women service members and 1.9% of men experienced sexual assault.
• The “Military-Industrial Complex” is enmeshed with Silicon Valley. A growing portion of Pentagon spending goes to large tech firms.
• War contributes significantly to climate change: The U.S. Defense Department is one of the world’s top greenhouse gas emitters.

The 35-year-old has published four wildly popular novels that have been translated into dozens of languages. The first two – Conversations with Friends and Normal People – were translated into Hebrew by the Israeli publisher Modan. But in 2021, Rooney turned down a translation offer from the publisher for her third novel, Beautiful World, Where Are You, citing her desire to support the BDS movement, a Palestinian-led, global campaign that seeks to “end international support for Israel’s oppression of Palestinians and pressure Israel to comply with international law”.

In a conversation with Irish Palestinian artist and activist Samir Eskanda published on Tuesday, Rooney spoke about her regret at having once worked with a publisher she later realized had ties to the Israeli military.

“How could my actions be so inconsistent with my beliefs?” she said. By the time her third book was published, she added, “I had also become something of a public figure, and I felt a greater sense of responsibility in making decisions around my work.”

Modan did not respond to a request for comment.

November Books is the only Israeli publisher that meets conditions the BDS movement has set for exemption from the boycott. It does not operate in illegal Israeli settlements, receives no Israeli state funding and explicitly recognises the legal rights of Palestinians, including the right of return for Palestinian refugees, Rooney said. It has also published translations of Ta-Nehisi Coates and Naomi Klein’s books, along with a novel by Irish writer Colum McCann, which other Israeli publishers reportedly refused to translate.

Ishai Menuchin, November Books’s director, said in a statement that “publishing books by authors associated with the boycott movement demonstrates to Israeli readers that opposition to occupation, apartheid and genocide is what lies at the heart of the boycott – a clearly legitimate form of political protest”.

I think of my friend, Omar’s, family land, of his mother with the figs and lemons, of his father in the garden where he loved to be, olive trees that had stood for generations. Gone. Olive trees, hundreds of years old, uprooted, citrus groves flattened, agricultural land stripped bare. These are not incidental losses. They are generational systems of life cut out at the root. Soil left carrying the residue of explosives and heavy metals, air thick with the aftermath of munitions and burning infrastructure, what once sustained life made hostile to it. This is not damage. This is removal.

Scholasticide

Universities levelled, schools bombed including those sheltering civilians, a generation cut off from education by force. This is scholasticide. Scholars, writers, academics killed. Refaat Alareer, a professor who taught his students how to write their way out of silence, killed in Gaza. “If I must die, you must live to tell my story…” Sufyan Tayeh, a father, a university president, a man who spent his life building institutions of knowledge in a place where they are repeatedly torn down, killed in an airstrike.

Medicide

Hospitals attacked and rendered non-functional, doctors, nurses, paramedics killed while treating the wounded. I think of Dr Ahmed Moghrabi, head of the burns unit and reconstructive surgery at Nasser Hospital, a personal friend. He told me about the sieges. In 2024, the army forced patients and staff into a single file and ordered them out. He stood there in civilian clothes, his nurse just ahead of him, waiting. His nurse was taken. Ahmed was waved through. He kept walking. Later, when the nurse was released, he said they kept asking him, again and again, where Dr Ahmed Moghrabi was. He told them he was right behind me. You just never saw him. And then there is Dr Hussam Abu Safiya. Taken in December 2024. Held in an Israeli prison. Tortured. No charge. This is medicide.

Domicide

Homes reduced to dust, entire neighbourhoods erased, families not displaced but removed. This is domicide. A close friend in Gaza said to me, after his family home was bombed, “Do you think I can afford to be sentimental about my home? Habibti, I can’t. We learn to move on or we learn to fix. It has always been like this.” The same friend had already been displaced multiple times by then. By that stage, he had ended up living with extended families he had never met in his life. Nearly two hundred people. Half of them children. They were staying in a rented house. A missile landed in the neighbour’s home. It did not explode. At that moment, he gathered the children and began running in one direction. The rest of the family scattered in others. They knew a second bomb would come. And this time, they would not be so lucky. They had made it a few hundred metres from the house when the second strike came. This time it detonated. The blast tore through the air behind them, a force that pushed into their backs. He felt it before he heard it. When they returned, there was nothing left. No walls. No doors. Nothing. Just dust. They slept there that night. There was nowhere else to go.

You can see it. Gaza, before. Gaza, now. Southern Lebanon, before. Southern Lebanon, now.

Urbicide

Cities hollowed out. Roads, markets, bakeries, water systems, electricity grids dismantled. And when people try to restore what remains, they are targeted. Workers fixing phone lines. Engineers repairing power. Shot at while rebuilding the bare minimum needed to live. This is not disruption. This is prevention. This is urbicide.

Culturicide

Mosques, churches, archives and historic sites damaged or destroyed. Manuscripts, records, places of prayer, places of gathering, places that hold memory across generations. Not only buildings, but meaning. Not only structures, but identity. A people’s past made fragile, their continuity disrupted. This is culturicide.

Memoricide

Cemeteries bulldozed. Graves dug up. Bodies left exposed. Families denied the dignity of burying their dead. I saw it in Lebanon. Cemeteries bombed. Locals would ask, quietly, “Why do they target the dead? They are already dead.” There was no answer. This is memoricide.

Epistemicide

Journalists killed in unprecedented numbers, one every two days. It is the deadliest time for journalists in modern history. The act of witnessing itself targeted. I think of a journalist I know. The way he works. Quiet. Careful. Principled. Always checking, always returning, making sure he got it right. The kind of person who carries other people’s stories with more care than his own. We were up all night trying to access it. An old Facebook account. Deactivated for more than a decade. His face was already circulating. Accusations attached to his name. Claims constructed to suggest links that would justify targeting him. We had no idea which email was tied to it. The phone number no longer existed. We could not get in. But they could. They accessed it. Used it. We understood what that meant. If they could build a case around his name, they could build a reason to kill him. He kept working. While his colleagues and friends died around him, he continued documenting. Because that is what they do. This is how truth is made into a target. This is epistemicide.

Genocide

And through it all, the mass killing of civilians. Entire families erased in single strikes. Names wiped out from registries in one moment. Multi-generational households buried under the same roof. Repeated strikes on areas people are told to move to for safety. Shelters, schools, places of refuge hit again and again. People pulled from rubble, and then struck again in the same place. Rescue workers returning, knowing they may not leave. The wounded treated without anaesthetic, without electricity, without the conditions required to keep them alive. Not a single event. Not a single mistake. A pattern. Killing that extends through families, through neighbourhoods, through the conditions required to sustain life.

This is genocide.

This is extermination.

Erasure

None of these acts stand alone. They reinforce each other. Destroy the land and people cannot grow food, destroy the homes and they cannot return, destroy the hospitals and they cannot survive, destroy the schools and they cannot rebuild, destroy the records and they cannot prove they were ever there. This is not one crime. It is a system of erasure.

But one thing they did not foresee is resistance.

He has also overseen operations tied to horrifying civilian deaths, including 168 students at an Iranian girls’ school. Let that sink in. Children. Girls in a school. Young lives that should have been protected, not incinerated in the name of reckless militarism. When leaders treat civilian casualties like background noise, democracy rots and human dignity is shredded. When they speak with open contempt for mercy, they tell the world exactly who they are.

And while innocent people die, U.S. servicemembers are put in danger too. Hegseth’s actions and rhetoric do not make anyone safer. They make catastrophe more likely. They inflame conflict, raise the risk of retaliation, and place troops in the path of consequences created by arrogance at the top. That is not patriotism. That is reckless endangerment dressed up as toughness.

Now Rep. Yassamin Ansari has introduced articles of impeachment against Hegseth, and Congress must meet this moment with courage. Pass the articles. Hold the hearings. Expose the truth. Remove him.
