A recent study found that 57% of college students report feeling lonely. Almost everyone is aware of the mental health crisis among teenagers. Thousands of articles and TV segments have proposed causes ranging from smartphones to vaccines. But among all those theories, few have focused on the physical spaces that shape our everyday lives.
Third spaces are social environments — separate from the home and the school- or work-place — where people can gather to socialize, relax, and engage in activities distinct from their daily routines. They are crucial for creating community, fostering connection, and developing social skills. They could also play a key role in improving mental health and belonging among America’s teenagers.
When I arrived at the University of Virginia, I felt excited and hopeful. While incredibly nervous about leaving home, my family and my friends, I was ready to seize everything that UVA has to offer. I wanted to have a rich social life and a successful academic career, to find an intramural soccer team and a go-to late night hangout spot; I wanted to be happy. But college is a big change. Adjusting to an entirely new place with so many new faces and routines can be overwhelming, and finding a place, or group of people, to fit in with can be daunting.

My first year at UVA was lonely. Within a couple of weeks, it seemed like everyone around me had found their friends and their place within the university — and that it was already set in stone. While the vast majority of new people I met were very friendly, it just didn’t click. I had a hard time finding my people, I had a hard time even finding a place to look.
In high school, soccer was a big part of my social life. The fields were my third space, where I would spend afternoons after school kicking the ball with my friends. Yet as a first-year without a car, getting to any field was difficult. At UVA, there are no soccer fields near first-year dorms. Whether through bad planning, financial restrictions or city boundaries, the space just didn’t exist. I often needed 45 minutes to walk from my dorm to the nearest field, with no guarantee that a club sports or fraternity wouldn’t be using it when I arrived. Intramural sports suffered from similar problems. Games were held at night, off grounds (UVA speak for “off campus”), at the facility for graduate students. Making the journey by bicycle felt borderline unsafe. My route to these fields was poorly lit, and parts of it were without sidewalks or bike lanes. My roommate and I would pedal as fast as possible while also trying to avoid the often reckless college drivers.
Then, during a somewhat gentler ride to a campus event, I was hit by a car. My bike was ruined, but outside of a few cuts and bruises, I escaped physically unscathed. The real damage was done to my psyche. If I had been hit on campus in the middle of the afternoon, then think of how likely I was to be hit at night on the dark, windy roads to my soccer games. Biking to faraway activities seemed like less of an option, and I began to feel increasingly stranded.
Soccer had been my outlet and main way of meeting new people; without it, I wasn’t totally sure what to do. On grounds, I couldn’t find places to socialize or relax away from the stresses of school. Libraries were quiet and stressful, my dorm was divided into suites with their doors always closed, and dining halls were filled with students on their phones instead of in conversation. After my first year, I wasn’t totally sure I wanted to come back.
Loneliness is quietly reshaping campus life, with more than half of college students saying they feel lonely, according to a new report from Trellis Strategies, a nonprofit research organization focused on student success and higher education policy.
The report, based on data from Trellis’s 2024 Student Financial Wellness Survey of nearly 44,000 college students, found that 57 percent of students said they felt lonely (45 percent sometimes and 12 percent always); just 15 percent of respondents said they never felt lonely.

Icelandic coast guards and special forces seized a ship operated by a group founded by anti-whaling activist Paul Watson and detained its crew, officials in the Arctic island nation said Saturday.
The Icelandic Coast Guard said the crew of whaling ship Hvalur 9 requested assistance on Thursday evening because they believed their safety was under threat from the protest vessel Bandero. It said the Bandero ignored coast guards’ instructions to leave Icelandic waters, and later an order to stop its engines.
Coast guards and the police special forces Viking Squad boarded the vessel around midnight on Thursday and detained its crew. Watson was not aboard.
The Captain Paul Watson Foundation confirmed in a statement that the vessel had been seized. It said the 21 crew members were being detained aboard the ship without their phones.
A hero, fuckers . . . .Canada-born Watson, 75, is a former head of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, whose high seas confrontations with whaling vessels have drawn support from celebrities, featured in the reality television series “Whale Wars” and regularly landed him in jail. He left Sea Shepherd in 2022 to set up his foundation.
Watson was imprisoned in Greenland for five months in 2024 after being arrested on a Japanese warrant over charges of obstructing a whaling ship in 2010. On his release in December 2024, Watson said he would be careful not to be caught again.
“I have to make sure that I don’t land in Iceland or another country where Interpol might try to have me arrested again,” he said.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr on Friday defended his agency’s recent actions against ABC, saying broadcasters have a duty to “operate in the public interest” and the FCC is merely trying to restore that standard.
Broadcasters like ABC, Carr said in an interview on the Fox Business Network, “struck a deal with the American people. You broadcasters get subsidized access, free access to a valuable public resource, the airwaves, worth billions of dollars. In exchange, you have to operate in the public interest.”
“Look, as a country, we should have a trusted, respected news media, and we’re not there,” Carr told anchor Maria Bartiromo. “So I hope more broadcasters return to their public interest obligations.”

No Brazilian song for these folk: The U.S. Department of Homeland Security says it has terminated Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for people from Haiti, Syria and Yemen. The notice comes as lower district courts have still not executed a Supreme Court ruling officially ending the program.
Several notices from DHS tell employers they cannot continue to employ a person who does not have proof of an up to date work authorization. They also note that work authorization for TPS-holders from Haiti, Syria and Yemen are no longer valid.
The announcement adds to the already confusing state of TPS.

A dirty world, man, a dirty world: The Army is offering certain helicopter pilots six-figure bonuses to stay in uniform, hoping to retain active-duty warrant officers who are mid-career or approaching retirement eligibility. Bonuses range from around $75,000 over three years for aviators with 12 to 14 years of service, to nearly $210,000 over six years for those with at least 18 years of service. The 2026 program aims to convince at least one in four eligible soldiers to stay, with a particular focus on instructor pilots and maintenance test pilots.

Whitby’s famous Whale Bone Arch will be replaced by a bronze replica, it has been confirmed.
The clifftop structure, described as one of the town’s “most recognisable and significant landmarks”, is in need of replacement due to deterioration.
Real jawbones of dead whales were first raised on top of West Cliff in 1964 as a symbol of Whitby’s maritime heritage. They were replaced with another genuine pair in 2002, but the new set will be more durable and less controversial.
Whitby’s mayor Sandra Turner said: “Nobody wants to think a whale has been killed in this day and age, but at the same time it’s Whitby’s heritage. It’s important we still have something up there which represents that.”
North Yorkshire Council, which owns and maintains the 19ft (5.8m) tall arch, said it would be taken down in September to allow a replica of the same size to be moulded from the existing bones.
The new structure is expected to be installed early next year, according to the authority.
“Years of exposure to the weather on the coast has led to significant deterioration in the arch’s condition, meaning the bones now need to be replaced,” a spokesperson said.
Council executive member Mark Crane, whose responsibilities include harbours, said: “The new bronze arch will stand for generations, providing a lasting symbol of the town’s unique maritime heritage and ensuring this iconic feature continues to inspire residents and visitors long into the future.”

Christian and Confucian religious leaders, scholars, and representatives are set to gather at Sogang University in Seoul on August 4-5 for the first Christian–Confucian Colloquium.
The event is organized by the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue in collaboration with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, Sogang University, and the Korean Confucian Academy.
The colloquium will be held under the theme: “New Heaven, New Earth and Datong (Great Harmony, Great Unity): Christian–Confucian Dialogue for Building an Ideal Society.”
According to a communique released on Saturday, participants will explore how Christianity and Confucianism can jointly inspire responses to some of the most urgent challenges facing society today.
The press release noted that the two traditions are rooted in distinct theological and philosophical foundations.
However, it added, the two religious traditions share a concern for human dignity, moral integrity, responsible leadership, and the common good.

Financial divestment from Israel has been a major goal for pro-Palestinian protesters at Columbia, who established the “Gaza Solidarity Encampment” and occupied Hamilton Hall in April 2024. In the wake of those protests, SWC-UAW passed a resolution in June 2024 supporting the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement—a pro-Palestinian movement that calls for organizations to withdraw financial support from any companies with ties to Israel.
“We, as workers—as the people producing value for this institution—have a stake in how that money is invested,” Tavares said. “Because of these obligations that we all have under the international legal framework to maintain a certain commitment to human rights, we understand it as a labor issue when the value we produce is used to violate human rights.”
But Tavares said that union members voted at a general body meeting Monday to withdraw the divestment proposal entirely.
“A natural part of the bargaining process that you come in with a certain slate of demands that then need to be narrowed as you engage in the process of negotiations with your employer,” Tavares said.
In light of two New York Police Department sweeps of the encampment and occupied Hamilton Hall, SWC-UAW also aimed to permanently prohibit NYPD officers from entering campus. The union passed a “Cops off Campus” resolution in June 2024, alongside the BDS resolution. But the union has since backed off of demanding the sweeping removal of police officers from campus.
