Bernays was asked to bring a celebrity group to visit the White House and demonstrate Coolidge’s “warm, sympathetic personality.” He decided that “stage people symbolize warmth, extroversion, and Bohemian camaraderie,” and set up a star-studded breakfast at the White House. He arranged for a group of actors to take the midnight train from New York to Washington after they finished their shows. The cast included Al Jolson, Ed Wynn, The Dolly Sisters, Charlotte Greenwood, Raymond Hitchcock, and other big stars of the time.
Mrs. Coolidge greeted the guests. “I have met you all across the footlights,” she said, “but it’s not the same as greeting you here.” The President was not quite as welcoming. “He was practically inarticulate, and no movement of any kind agitated his deadpan face,” Bernays said later.
When the group lined up for breakfast photos, the President remained as grim as ever. After breakfast, the group moved to the White House lawn where Al Jolson sang “Keep Coolidge,” which he had composed for the occasion. Everybody sang — except for the President.
Despite Coolidge’s demeanor, celebrity star power seems to have worked. Newspaper headlines reported, “Actor Eats Cake with the Coolidges…President Nearly Laughs…Guests Crack Dignified Jokes, Sing Song and Pledge To Support Coolidge.”

George Washington Hill, president of the American Tobacco Company and an eccentric businessman, recognized that an important part of his market was not being tapped into. Hill believed that cigarette sales would soar if he could entice more women to smoke in public.
In 1928 Hill hired Bernays to expand the sales of his Lucky Strike cigarettes. Recognizing that women were still riding high on the suffrage movement, Bernays used this as the basis for his new campaign. He consulted Dr. A.A. Brill, a psychoanalyst, to find the psychological basis for women smoking. Dr. Brill determined that cigarettes which were usually equated with men, represented torches of freedom for women. The event caused a national stir and stories appeared in newspapers throughout the country. Though not doing away with the taboo completely, Bernays’s efforts had a lasting effect on women smoking.

At a meeting in January, Morocco and Israel signed a joint military work plan for 2026.
In April 2026, the Israeli news outlet Ynet published an article headlined: “Abraham Accords reach the Strait: how Israel can help Morocco reclaim its north.”
It was written by a Morocco-based analyst affiliated with the hard-right US-based Middle East Forum, which has previously supported the far-right British figure Tommy Robinson.
The article described developments in Washington as the “architecture of a coordinated strategic repositioning”. It argued that Israel was uniquely placed to help Morocco exploit Spain’s deteriorating relationships with Washington and Jerusalem.
The author proposed three roles for Israel:
- direct diplomatic signalling in support of Morocco’s position;
- lobbying and amplification within Washington;
- repeated attacks on Spain as hypocritical for criticising Israeli territorial policy while retaining Ceuta and Melilla.

In Unwavering Solidarity with the African and Anti-Colonial Struggle: A Call for Unified Action Among the U.S. Left
The recent declaration of war published by the U.S. fascist state attacking Cuba and its allies serves as a glaring call for urgent and strategic unity among the targeted organizations, the broadest sectors of the U.S. left, and all people of conscience. It comes as no surprise that a scrambling empire would see organized, sustained resistance that refuses to silently accommodate its lawless, genocidal attacks on human rights globally as a credible threat. Directly out of their imperialist playbook, it is quite clear that this is an attempt to criminalize Cuba’s existence while intentionally omitting the actual cause of suffering for the Cuban people – the decades-long blockade systematically depriving them of food, medicine, and fuel, designed to strangle the revolution by all available means.
Although the report’s intention is not new, it provides renewed consideration of the question of what is to be done. That is, in its naming of various “guilty parties” among the U.S. left, it reiterates who has been, and will continue to be, on the cutting edge of repression. Both in its historical references to African revolutionaries like Assata Shakur and Kwame Ture, and recalling the nationwide opposition to the execution of George Floyd, the state continues to point its repressive apparatus at colonized and oppressed populations, first and foremost, at Africans fighting for self-determination.
Our resistance must be rooted in the politics of African/Black liberation, not just in ideology and practice, but in the organizational structures that will allow for such a path to be charted and achieved – one that is driven by African/Black leadership. Through the framework of People(s)-Centered Human Rights, we understand that the process of decolonization can only be advanced when it is led by those most oppressed by the U.S. settler state.
For non-Africans, the task ahead requires that we show up more fully and with more principle and discipline alongside African revolutionaries – not as an act of charity, but as a political commitment of mutual comradeship that materializes the inextricable link uniting our collective struggle against our common enemy.
When politics command our organization, we effectively strategize and commit to action in a way that reflects our unwavering solidarity with African liberation and the Black Radical Peace Tradition. In other words, the social, economic, and political benefits that stand to be gained by compromising or retreating on our principles must be rejected if we are to commit to an authentic application of our anti-colonial, anti-oppressive, and anti-imperialist politics.
Kwame Ture reminds us of the necessity to move from mere influence to collective power.
We are at a precipice where the call for a unified resistance requires the rejection of liberalism and siloed leftist “influence,” and the embrace of swift and strategic unification that leverages our collective power against state violence intended to neutralize anyone unwilling to submit to its oppressive forces. The path to win is before us and has been laid out by Africans leading this struggle – historically and today.
We do not underestimate the power of our enemy. Their militarized forces occupy our streets and our psyches. These violent systems of repression lay the groundwork for the intensification to come. Our response demands a resistance rooted in collective struggle for systemic change that shifts power to the people: the heart of People(s)-Centered Human Rights. Most importantly, we will continue, relentlessly, in our unbending solidarity with Cuba, in defense of its people, its sovereignty, and the integrity of its revolutionary process.

President Trump said recreation in Bears Ears National Monument was virtually impossible. Documents reviewed by The New York Times show officials knew otherwise.
When President Trump sharply reduced the size of Bears Ears National Monument in Utah by more than 1.2 million acres, he claimed it was necessary because recreation was virtually impossible within the site’s boundaries.
“You can’t go hunting, you can’t go fishing, you can’t do anything, you can virtually not even walk on it,” Mr. Trump said during a ceremony in the Oval Office last month.
The No. 2 official at the Interior Department, Kate MacGregor, chimed in, saying, “That’s exactly right, sir, so you are remedying that today.”
But recreation has been allowed in Bears Ears since President Barack Obama designated the monument in 2016. And government documents reviewed by The New York Times show that Trump administration officials were briefed on recreational opportunities inside the monument about a month before the Oval Office event.
Utah officials, who pushed for shrinking the monument, told the Trump administration in June that there was “current recreational access” to Bears Ears, according to the documents, which The Times obtained via a public records request.
The state officials specifically cited two trails popular among hikers, backpackers and off-road vehicle drivers, the documents show. (Other trails attract scores of horseback riders, mountain bikers and rock climbers, as Mr. Obama noted when he designated the monument.)
The documents suggest that the administration was “lying or spreading misinformation about these fantastic public lands” when it justified cutting the protected areas, said Steve Bloch, the legal director at the nonprofit Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, who reviewed the records at the request of The Times.
National monuments are public lands that are legally protected from oil and gas drilling, mining and other industrial development. They have similar protections as national parks, but while national parks are created by Congress, national monuments can be created by presidents through the Antiquities Act of 1906.
Taylor Rogers, a White House spokeswoman, did not answer questions about the documents but said in an email that “the Obama and Biden administrations abused the Antiquities Act to lock up millions of acres of Utah’s public lands, impoverishing local communities and sharply restricting access for recreation, grazing, resource development and fire prevention.”
Bears Ears is the ancestral homeland of five tribes in the region: the Navajo Nation, Hopi Tribe, Ute Indian Tribe, Ute Mountain Ute Tribe and Pueblo of Zuni. It contains thousands of archaeological sites that tribes consider culturally significant, including the remains of burial grounds, cliff dwellings and rock art panels.
The monument also boasts “world-class outdoor recreation opportunities,” Mr. Obama wrote in his proclamation designating Bears Ears, which cited “rock climbing, hunting, hiking, backpacking, canyoneering, whitewater rafting, mountain biking and horseback riding.”
Louis Williams, the founder and owner of Ancient Wayves River and Hiking Adventures, which provides tours of Bears Ears led by Indigenous guides, said he watched live as Mr. Trump signed the executive order to shrink the monument.
“I was shaking my head,” Mr. Williams said. “I was like, ‘I wonder if he’s ever been here to this region, because if he knew this region, he would find out this place is totally accessible.’”

FCC Commissioners Face Ethics Complaints for Taking Luxury Gifts From Paramount
Citing a ProPublica report on Paramount providing luxury Kennedy Center gala tickets to FCC officials, the complaints note that commissioners accepted the gifts while the FCC was reviewing or about to review megamergers involving Paramount.
FCC Chair Brendan Carr’s financial statements show he has reported accepting honors gala tickets from CBS or its parent company eight times since his 2017 appointment to the commission, totaling over $75,000 in gifts.
Carr, who also voted in favor of the Paramount-Skydance merger last year, sat with his wife in a private skybox at the December gala with Paramount CEO David Ellison and other executives from Paramount and CBS. Such seats sold for $125,000 a ticket, according to Kennedy Center guidelines.
“Government officials have the power to make decisions that impact huge swaths of the American people,” Sherman said in a statement about the organization’s demand for an inspector general investigation. “With this tremendous power comes a higher ethical standard that apparently wasn’t met. The IG can and must get answers for the public.”
The proposed merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery has drawn a flurry of legal opposition.
California, New York and 10 other states filed a lawsuit seeking to block the merger under federal and state antimonopoly laws. The Writers Guild of America, the Freedom of the Press Foundation and the Public Interest Project filed similar court challenges in recent weeks.
Paramount has recently agreed to pause its merger until the litigation is resolved or until June 1, 2027, whichever comes first.
