A $300,000 jury verdict won recently by a Louisiana Supreme Court justice who sued the Advocate, the state’s largest newspaper, for libel over an editorial has caused concern among some US press freedom defenders.
One said the decision demonstrated a misunderstanding of a key legal principle governing such cases. And another worries the verdict could have a chilling effect on the media industry’s efforts to report critically on powerful people and institutions.
George Freeman, the Media Law Resource Center’s executive director, and Seth Stern, the chief of advocacy at the Freedom of the Press Foundation, shared those thoughts after the 24 August conclusion of a complex, days-long civil trial pitting Louisiana supreme court justice Jefferson Davis Hughes III against the Advocate.
The judge maintained that a 2019 Advocate editorial whose headline included “Jeff Hughes … made a mockery of justice” libeled him – but as a US public figure, to meet his burden of proof in the dispute, he had to prove “actual malice” by the publication.
The Advocate reported on Tuesday that Louisiana’s judiciary commission released misconduct charges against Hughes, accusing him of using his elected office and political “campaign war chest to intimidate [the outlet], its attorney [Scott Sternberg] and a private citizen [whom the judge] sued over a letter she wrote to the newspaper”.
That misconduct case “is now the third against Hughes to come to public light,” the Advocate reported.
Asked to comment on the Hughes verdict and its possible implications on the actual malice standard, Stern on Monday said it “won’t improve journalism” to impose “significant monetary damages whenever the inevitable mistakes occur”.
“While [journalists] do their best to ensure that their sources and source materials are accurate, there is always a possibility that they aren’t,” Stern said. Stern added that is why the US Supreme Court for decades has held that journalists can only be held liable for defamation in cases involving public figures if they acted with “knowledge of falsity or reckless disregard of the truth”.
He said otherwise it was a real possibility that a “fear of liability” would make publishers “more timid and suppress critical reporting of wealthy, powerful or otherwise newsworthy people”.
Meanwhile, Freeman said he believed the Hughes verdict demonstrated how difficult it is to convey “what the actual malice standard requires”.
“In the mind of the publisher, you really need to believe the story is either not true or probably untrue – but you published anyhow,” Freeman said. And, in the Hughes case, he said “there is no evidence or line of proof” that had occurred.

1. General Douglas MacArthur (Korean War)

Tina Cordova, founder of the Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium, addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Monday in hopes of convincing global leaders to stop nuclear weapons tests like the one that sickened generations of her family in New Mexico.
The United Nations commemorated the International Day against Nuclear Tests, which is Aug. 31, with a series of speeches decrying the human and environmental impacts of nuclear weapons testing.
At the UN headquarters in New York City on the invitation of UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock. Baerbock said in a news release that she invited Cordova to “raise awareness about the effects of nuclear weapons tests explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.”
Cordova, in her speech, recounted the 1945 Trinity Test that she said marked “the beginning of the end for tens of thousands of people that we’ve documented, including babies that died in record numbers in the year after Trinity.”
Cordova, who founded the consortium more than 20 years ago to advocate for compensation for New Mexico’s downwinders, did not immediately respond to Source NM’s request for comment Monday morning. But, in a news release Aug. 27, she called the speech before global leaders “an honor of a lifetime.”
In her speech, she referenced the 2025 congressional expansion of the Radiation and Exposure Compensation Act, which included downwinders and some New Mexico uranium miners, as the first-ever acknowledgement of New Mexicans’ “sacrifice and their suffering.” Members of Congress are currently working on legislation that would further expand RECA to cover additional groups and radiation-linked cancers.
But Cordova said compensation for past harms is not enough, and urged the leaders to remember the Trinity Test 81 years ago as reason to fully abolish nuclear weapons.
“It’s time we set our families, our children and our grandchildren free from nuclear threat,” she said. “We must commit ourselves to a world without nuclear testing, a world without nuclear weapons.”

This article is a digest of work on ‘high control groups’ and Joost Meerloo’s book published post second world war on Menticide and the psychology of thought control. In order to position myself as to the research, my own interests have been developing through a study of what I call “sublegal violence” after studying the psychology and sociology of dehumanisation.
This work has led me into the terratory of understanding stress and its impacts on cognition and the psychological consonance of the individual in everyday life. To contextualise that a bit, beyond looking at the effects of bad actors, I am asking what the effects are on the mental health of a culture of:

The rape of the mind and stealthy mental coercion are among the oldest crimes of [hu]mankind. They probably began back in prehistoric days when man first discovered that he could exploit human qualities of empathy and understanding in order to exert power over his fellow men. It means to overwhelm and to enrapture, to invade, to usurp, to pillage, and to steal.

Michigan’s Democratic US Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, recently went on an apology tour for accurate and reasonable comments he made that were intentionally taken out of context by the Israel lobby.
In response to a story about a man running his car into the Temple Israel synagogue in a Detroit suburb and shooting a security guard, Abdul El-Sayed said, “hurt people hurt people”.
What Abdul El-Sayed was referring to is the fact that the man behind the attack, Ayman Mohammad Ghazali, had four relatives killed by the IDF during the Israeli ethnic cleansing campaign in Lebanon.
Clearly, Abdul El-Sayed was not justifying the attack, but making the correct point that terrorist attacks on civilians are often “blowback” for the terrorism the U.S., UK and Israeli governments carry out around the world.

The “civil war” currently playing out in the Democratic Party is usually thought of as a battle between socialists and progressives on the one hand, and centrists on the other. Which it is. But it’s also a battle between the Democratic establishment and its own voters.
If you need proof, look at party leadership’s plans to install Jared Moskowitz and several other right-wing Democrats in influential foreign policy positions if the party retakes the House of Representatives.

The views of the Democratic electorate on Israel are not ambiguous. vehemently opposing any conditions whatsoever on US aid to Israel—even though, under US law, it’s already illegal to send aid to states violating human rights.

Rabid Jewish supremacist Ben-Gvir is at it again. “[There are] raids night and day… and our situation is very bad,” a female detainee tells Ben-Gvir. “A severe infringement of our rights… us women as well.”
When asked about the nature of the problems the detainees are facing, she replies: “Everything… personal needs… we have been without a shower for this whole time, and there is no water inside the cells. There are many diseases and no treatment.”
Ben-Gvir then tells the detainees that their extreme repression is his handiwork: “Okay, I’ll tell you one thing: the days of summer camps in Israeli prisons are over! I am responsible for this. And anyone who harmed my brothers will not get hotel conditions! You held our hostages… we lowered your conditions to the bare minimum.”
In a landmark advisory opinion on July 19, 2024, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s decades-long occupation of Palestinian land “illegal” and demanded the evacuation of all settlements. Israeli settlers are sometimes referred to as “colonizers.”

Targeting the Group Leader: Instead of trying to convince every single individual, a propagandist must influence key group leaders, figureheads, and authorities who naturally dictate the actions of the masses.
Creating Circumstances: Rather than just pushing dry facts, campaigns should stage events, leverage symbols, and manufacture news (such as using the Easter parade to make smoking socially acceptable for women) to force a desired reaction.
The Engineering of Consent: Bernays defined this as the use of an integrated, conscious strategy to mold public acceptance for ideas, policies, or commercial products.
Edward Louis Bernays, the pioneer of the public relations field who invented the press release, the third-party authority, the “front group,” and other tools of the manipulative trade, was born in Vienna on Nov. 22 in 1891. Bernays was the nephew of Sigmund Freud and harnessed some of his uncle’s insights to serve what Bernays called “the engineering of consent.” Among his best-known public relations campaigns were the promotion of cigarette smoking by women in the 1920s for the American Tobacco Company; the promotion of bacon and eggs as the all-American breakfast; the branding of the Arbenz government of Guatemala as “communist,” justifying its overthrow by the U.S. on behalf of United Fruit; the promotion of disposable cups as “sanitary” on behalf of Dixie Cups; and the launching of the 1939 Worlds Fair in New York.
Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter described Bernays and his associate Ivy Lee as “professional poisoners of the public mind, exploiters of foolishness, fanaticism and self-interest.”

The recent practice of propaganda has proved that it is possible, at least up to a certain point and within certain limits.” —Edward Bernays
Bernays had a particular gift for the marketing strategy called the “tie-up” or “tie-in” — in which one venue or opportunity or occasion for promoting a consumer product, for example, radio advertising, is linked to another, say, newspaper advertising, and even, at times, to a third, say a department store exhibition salesroom featuring the item, and possibly even a fourth, such as an important holiday, for example Thrift Week.
Bernays’ brilliance for promotion in this vein emerges clearly when one reads, in the Bernays Typescript on Publicizing the New Dodge Cars, 1927-1928: “Two Sixes”, the story of how he managed to secure newspaper coverage for the radio programs he developed to promote the Dodge Brothers’ new six-cylinder cars. The Bernays Typescript on Publicizing the Fashion Industry, 1925-27: “Hats and Stockings” and the Bernays Typescript on Art in the Fashion Industry, 1923-1927, reveal a similar flair for consumer manipulation in the arena of fashion.
In addition to famous corporate clients, such as the Dodge Brothers, Procter & Gamble, the American Tobacco Company, Cartier Inc., Best Foods, CBS, the United Fruit Company, General Electric, Dodge Motors, the fluoridationists of the Public Health Service, Knox-Gelatin, and innumerable other big names, Bernays also worked on behalf of many non-profit institutions and organizations. These included, to name just a few, the Committee on Publicity Methods in Social Work (1926-1927), the Jewish Mental Health Society (1928), the Book Publishers Research Institute (1930-1931), the New York Infirmary for Women and Children (1933), the Committee for Consumer Legislation (1934), the Friends of Danish Freedom and Democracy (1940), the Citywide Citizens’ Committee on Harlem (1942), and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (1954-1961). For the U.S. Government, he worked for the President’s Emergency Committee on Employment (1930-1932) and President Calvin Coolidge.
In 1950s Bernays helped create India as the Democratic Republic of Southeast Asia by having the People’s Congress of India adapt the Bill of Rights, adding freedom of the press, speech, religion, assembly, and freedom of petition to the country’s constitution.
The Bernays Typescript on Public Relations Work and Politics, 1924: “Breakfast with Coolidge” shows that President Coolidge too was among his clients. Bernays was hired to improve Coolidge’s image before the 1924 presidential election.
Another selection from his papers, the Typescript on Publicizing the Physical Culture Industry, 1927: “Bernarr Macfadden”, reveals Bernays’ opinion of the leader of the physical culture movement. Yet another client, department store visionary Edward A. Filene, was the subject of the Typescript on a Boston Department Store Magnate. On behalf of the United Fruit Company (today’s Chiquita Brands International), Bernays orchestrated political propaganda in concert with the U.S. government to facilitate the overthrow of the democratically elected president of Guatemala, Jacobo Arbenz Guzman. Bernays’ propaganda (documented in the BBC documentary, The Century of the Self), branded Arbenz as communist and was published in major U.S. media. According to a book review by John Stauber and Sheldon Rampton of Larry Tye’s biography, “The Father of Spin: Edward L. Bernays & The Birth of PR”,
“the term ‘banana republic‘ actually originated in reference to United Fruit’s domination of corrupt governments in Guatemala and other Central American countries. The company brutally exploited virtual slave labor in order to produce cheap bananas for the lucrative U.S. market.”
Self-promotion
Much of Bernays’s reputation today stems from his persistent public relations campaign to build his own reputation as “America’s No. 1 Publicist.” During his active years, many of his peers in the industry were offended by Bernays’s constant self-promotion. According to Cutlip, “Bernays was a brilliant person who had a spectacular career, but, to use an old-fashioned word, he was a braggart.”
“When a person would first meet Bernays,” Cutlip wrote, “it would not be long until Uncle Sigmund would be brought into the conversation. His relationship with Freud was always in the forefront of his thinking and his counseling.” According to Irwin Ross, another writer, “Bernays liked to think of himself as a kind of psychoanalyst to troubled corporations.” In the early 1920s, Bernays arranged for the US publication of an English-language translation of Freud’s General Introduction to Psychoanalysis. In addition to publicizing Freud’s ideas, Bernays used his association with Freud to establish his own reputation as a thinker and theorist—a reputation that was further enhanced when Bernays authored several landmark books of his own, most notably Crystallizing Public Opinion (1923, ISBN 0-87140-975-5), Propaganda (1928, ISBN 0-8046-1511-X) and “The Engineering of Consent“ in Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science (March 1947).
Recognition and criticism
Bernays’s celebration of propaganda helped define public relations, but it didn’t win the industry many friends. In a letter to President Franklin Roosevelt, Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter described Bernays and Ivy Lee as “professional poisoners of the public mind, exploiters of foolishness, fanaticism and self-interest.” Articles in the journals of opinion, such as the one by Marlen Pew, Edward L. Bernays Critiqued as “Young Machiavelli of Our Time”, and the debate between Bernays and Everett Dean Martin in Forum, Are We Victims of Propaganda?, depicted Bernays negatively. He and other publicists were often attacked as propagandists and deceptive manipulators, who represented special interests against the public interest and covertly contrived events that secured coverage as news stories, free of charge, for their clients instead of securing attention for them through paid advertisements. A 2002 BBC documentary, The Century of the Self, also describes Bernays as “undemocratic”.
In 2006 a Der Spiegel journalist interviewed the founder of the PR firm Burson-Marsteller, Harold Burson, and asked him about the role of Edward Bernays in shaping the course of modern PR.
“Bernays thought that he could control public opinion. His methodology, of course, was fundamental. Most of the things we do today were identified by Bernays 80 years ago. He had brilliant ideas. I met him a few times, but didn’t like him. He was one of the most egocentric people I have ever met,” Burson said.
Attention merchants Benjamin Day and Mark Zuckerberg!
In 1833, when Benjamin Day started selling papers for a penny — instead of the 6 cents his competitors charged — the number of people reading the news ballooned, changing media forever. Advertising revenue made it possible for the penny press to survive and, ultimately, thrive. This same revenue model persists today.
What makes Benjamin Day different from Mark Zuckerberg is how little he knew about his readers compared to the vast amount of data Meta has on its nearly 3 billion users. Whereas Day sold advertisers the ability to share their message with many people at once, Zuckerberg sells advertisers the ability to share tailored messages to highly specific groups of people, even one at a time, if they choose.
Sigmund Freud has a very complicated relationship with his Jewish identity. Further complicating matters is that many biographers have deliberately downplayed Freud’s Jewish identity to distance psychoanalysis from its Jewish roots. One of his biographies is entitled “Godless Jew,” a phrase Freud once used to describe himself. That description, however, is quite superficial.
Freud’s relationship with Judaism evolved over the course of his life. As Moshe Gresser notes in his article, “Sigmund Freud’s Jewish Identity: Evidence from His Correspondence,” as well as his subsequent book Dual Allegiance: Freud as a Modern Jew, Freud’s religious life can be divided up into stages. It took him an entire lifetime to figure out the role Judaism played in his life and even then he still struggled.
Freud’s father, Yaakov, came from a Hassidic family. Although he himself lapsed in practice, he remained connected to Torah learning. On his son, Sigmund’s 35th birthday, he bought him a Chumash. In Yaakov Freud’s moving poetic Hebrew inscription, which Yosef Chaim Yerushalmi closely explores in his book Freud’s Moses, he asks his son Sigmund to store the book like the fragments of the Luchos (Tablets) in the ark of the covenant.
Freud married Martha Bernays, the granddaughter of Chacham Isaac Bernays, Chief Rabbi of Hamburg and, as Professor Shnayer Leiman writes, a pre-cursor to Modern Orthodoxy. Interestingly, this would not be the last intersection between the Bernay and Freud families. The modern founder of public relations, Edward Bernays, was the child of Sigmund Freud’s sister Anna, who married Eli, Freud’s brother-in-law. It does not take a Freudian psychologist to see the psychoanalytic roots within the discipline of PR. It is basically talk therapy for corporations.
Freud’s first major work outlining the principles of psychotherapy was his 1899 book, The Interpretation of Dreams. He introduces the concept of the unconscious and how it can be accessed and interpreted through the analysis of dreams.
Freud paradoxically utilized his Jewish/Chassidic roots through denial and concealment. The biographical and textual analyses presented in my dissertation indicate that Freud extracted various interpretive techniques from Jewish and specific Chassidic religious texts. By shielding his methods and their sources from the reader (and perhaps himself), Freud endeavored to unveil the nature and function of dreams that ultimately transcended religion in its myriad forms.
When the fifth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rav Sholom Dovbeer Schneerson, also known as the Rashab, experienced unexplained numbness in his hand he consulted directly with Freud. The enduring power of the unconscious to shape our lives was a central point of their meeting. “The head grasps what the heart is unable to contain,” Freud reportedly told the Rashab, “and the heart cannot assimilate what your mind comprehends.” Joseph H. Burke’s The Hidden Freud: His Hassidic Roots, explores deeply the subconscious hassidic roots within Freud’s theories.
Yet for most of Freud’s life, his Judaism remained exactly that—unconscious. One issue that awakened his Jewish soul was Zionism. When Freud first published The Interpretation of Dreams, he sent a copy to Theodor Herzl. “As a token of the high esteem in which I—like so many others— have for many years regarded the poet and the fighter for the human rights of our people,” Freud wrote to Herzl in 1902. Freud later had a dream where Herzl appeared to him pleading, “Something must be done to save the Jewish people.” When the Balfour Declaration was announced, Freud was thrilled that Jerusalem may finally be “with the chosen people.”
Freud’s Jewish identity continued to echo throughout his life. In May of 1931, David Feuchtwang, the Chief Rabbi of Vienna wrote to Freud, wishing him a happy 75th birthday. Freud responded, with his most revealing words about the continued role of Jewish identity in his life:
Your words aroused a special echo in me, which I do not need to explain to you. In some place in my soul, in a very hidden corner, I am a fanatical Jew. I am very much astonished to discover myself as such in spite of all efforts to be unprejudiced and impartial. What can I do against it at my age?
The shattered remnants of Freud’s faith remained, as per his father’s inscription, concealed in the ark of his heart. His very approach to dreams, many have argued, draws upon the Talmudic approach to hermeneutics, known as derasha. “The dream,” Freud writes, “indeed, is so intimately connected with verbal expression that Ferenczi justly remarks that every tongue has its own dream-language.” Dreams are the text of our inner lives, waiting to be expounded upon. “The part played by words in dream-formation ought not to surprise us,” Freud continues, “A word, as the point of junction of a number of ideas, possesses, as it were, a predestined ambiguity.”
As Adam Kirsch explores in his fascinating article, “Freud as Talmudist,” the psychoanalytic approach transforms our subconscious into a Talmudic text. As Kirsch explains:
In dream analysis as in midrash, this disparity arises because the material to be interpreted is supersaturated with meaning. Ordinarily, words mean what they say, but the unconscious, like God, operates beyond the ordinary limits of human intelligence, packing meaning into every line, every letter. Freud could say about the dream what Ben Bag-Bag says about Torah in Pirkei Avot: “Turn it and turn it, for everything is in it.”
Every Jew, Rav Chaim Volozhin writes in his Nefesh HaChaim, is comparable to the ladder Yaakov saw in his dream. Our actions in this world extend upwards to the heavens.
“Know what is above you,” the Mishnah writes in Pirkei Avos, plainly understood to be a reference to God watching over us. This too, Rav Chaim Volozhin interprets through the lens of a ladder. Know that what is above—in the heavenly worlds, he explains, is a product of you and your actions.
A ladder, like our actions, extends upwards.
But as Yaakov’s dream makes clear, ladders are also how we plummet to our depths. The angels moved up and down on the ladder. Upwards movement, as the Nefesh HaChaim explains, is a reminder of the spiritual import of our actions. We can reach the heavens. But what about the downward movement?
In 1900, the year after Freud published his interpretation of dreams, Rav Tzadok of Lublin passed away. There is much to discuss about the life and thought of Rav Tzadok, but one thing certainly stands out in regard to our discussion: Rav Tzadok took dreams very seriously. He wrote an entire work, Divrei Chalomos, that records and interprets his own dreams. “The roots of my soul were revealed to me in a dream,” Rav Tzadok writes in his third recorded dream, “while I was in the chassidic court of Izhbitz.”
In his first work on hassidut, Tzidkas HaTzadik, Rav Tzadok quotes Rav Simcha Bunim of Peshischa in a passage that could have nearly appeared in Freud’s interpretation of dreams. “From a person’s dreams,” Rav Tzadok writes, “we can see their true values.” When Yaakov dreamed, he saw God—a testament to his unconscious holiness. Dreams are a ladder to our subconscious.
This is why the word סלם, a ladder, features so prominently in the first Jewish dream in the Torah. Dreams allow us, like the Nefesh HaChayim, to ascend upwards, and, like Rav Tzadok, dreams are a ladder to descend into our inner depths.
Like the enduring echoes that Freud heard from his Jewish roots, dreams for Rav Tzadok are a ladder to the unconscious values we hold most dear. Through our dreams we can descend downwards and consider the very nature of our subconscious—we can hear the enduring echoes of our soul.
To withstand Bernays’ cynical vision, democracies need fewer manipulable consumers and more citizens worthy of self-government.

Bernays referred to his approach as the engineering of consent:

He likened the production of mass opinion to the mass production of material goods, calling it “the very essence of the democratic process, the freedom to persuade and suggest.” He wrote that the only difference between education and propaganda is in the point of view. To be precise, he said, “The advocacy of what we believe in is education. The advocacy of what we don’t believe in is propaganda.”
Bernays was no advocate for a society of free and responsible individuals, at least not as it pertains to ordinary citizens. He believed that the average person has no idea what to think, arguing that it is up to elites to make up his mind for him.
The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government, which is the true ruling power of our country. We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of.
As Bernays saw it, a healthy democratic society requires the regulation of the beliefs of the many by the work of an unseen few. Such people understand the principles of psychology and the technology of public opinion. “They pull the wires that control the public mind,” he wrote, and they “harness old social forces and contrive new ways to bind and guide the world.” They tell us who to admire and who to despise, how our houses should be designed, what food to serve, how to dress, what sports we should play, what entertainments we should prefer, how we should talk, and even what jokes we should laugh at. Government itself depends on knowing how to get the public to acquiesce.
Doubting that ordinary people possess the ability to think for themselves, Bernays might have relished contemporary political discourse, which often resorts to name-calling and ridicule. Forced to think for themselves, he thought, people could fall back on little more than “cliches, pat words, and images which stand for a whole group of ideas or experiences.” The propagandist needs merely to “tag a political candidate with the word ‘interests’ to stampede millions of people into voting against him.” This use of labels to mold opinion has been amplified in the age of social media. Merely categorizing someone or something as communist, capitalist, woke, or systemically racist is all it takes.
Asked if he would take on the government of Israel as a client, he answers “Sure!” And here, gratis, is some public relations advice for Israel from the man who invented the game:
“What I would do, which apparently Israel has not done, is to establish much closer relationships with the democratic countries of the world and get those countries to make much more visible in the public mind how much they support Israel and how much they believe in freedom of religion, just as the democratic countries believe in freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, freedom of petition.
“Israel should appoint an international public relations committee, made up of all the best public relations people in the democratic countries of the world England, France, Germany, Italy, even Spain.”

The Court’s orders are binding on Israel, and the international community also has an obligation to protect the Palestinian people from genocide, including to take all necessary action to prevent and punish genocide.
Regrettably, Israel has not complied with the Orders. South Africa continues to pursue all avenues available to it to seek Israel’s full and immediate compliance with the Court’s Orders.

Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodríguez confirmed the “historic agreement” via a social media message on Friday night.

The Venezuelan Constitution establishes that all mineral and hydrocarbon resources are “inalienable public domain” goods. Transferring ownership of oil reserves would require a constitutional reform.

Bloomberg additionally reported that Washington’s direct involvement in Venezuela’s oil industry could be conducted by the Pentagon’s Office of Strategic Capital (OSC) in partnership with Venezuelan oil mogul Alejandro Betancourt. One Hundred Years Of Solitude, Gabriel García Márquez offers a fictional account of Colombia’s 1928 ‘banana massacre’. Here, we find out more about the real-life eventthat inspired these scenes.
Of the many different themes interwoven throughout Gabriel García Márquez’s masterful novel One Hundred Years Of Solitude, the issues of violence and history recur perhaps the most often. In the latter part of the book, the ‘gringos’ (the Latin American pejorative term for white foreigners, largely Americans) have occupied large areas of land and brought railways and modernity to García Márquez’s fictional town of Macondo. Then, an event takes place that marks a crucial point both in the novel and – in the case of the real-life event it was based on – in the history of Colombia, where the story is set.
The detail of this epochal event is told by García Márquez almost matter-of-factly. The labourers for the unnamed American banana company are on strike, for better working conditions and fair pay. The Colombian government, fearing a Communist uprising, is set against them. As the strikers mass in the centre of Macondo, troops set up machine gun nests on nearby roofs and take aim. With the surrounding streets blocked, there is no escape from the ensuing slaughter. Perhaps 3,000 are killed, their bodies collected by secret trains and dumped in the sea. Afterwards, no one remembers the massacre and the sole adult survivor – the character José Arcadio Segundo – is ignored as the whole town lapses into denial.
What is most striking about this ostensibly fictional account is how closely it matches the historical facts, such as they are known. There was indeed a ‘banana massacre’ of striking workers of the American banana-exporting United Fruit Company, not in Macondo, but in the real-world Colombian town of Ciénaga in 1928. The death toll would never become fully known and is still estimated at anywhere between 40 and 2,000. The bodies were either buried in mass graves or perhaps even dumped in the sea, as happens in García Márquez’s version. The workers’ demands were in retrospect clearly legitimate, including that they should be considered employees rather than contract workers and that they should be paid in currency rather than notes that could only be traded for food at United Fruit Company stores.
In the book, this episode follows Colonel Aureliano Buendía’s civil wars – of which García Márquez writes that he fought 32 and lost them all. The actual history of Colombia isn’t too different, including numerous civil wars and continual political instability throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. As in the book, the protagonists are Liberals and Conservatives, and it is likely that Colonel Aureliano Buendía’s character was in some part based on the author’s own grandfather, who was a colonel and a Liberal veteran of the Thousand Days’ War (1899-1902). He was vocal in his condemnation of the banana massacre, which García Márquez admired.

Deer Hunting with MOSES: Marvel Studios’ blockbuster Avengers series banks on the superhero genre conceived in the early 1930s by two Cleveland Jewish high school students: Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
Superman actualized the adolescent power fantasies of these two Depression-era kids, who craved liberation from the social and economic impoverishment of their lives and, in the tradition of the Golem of Prague, to fight antisemites.
The narrative is rich in Jewish symbolism. Superman’s parents sent him to Earth in a tiny rocket ship, reminiscent of baby Moses being set adrift in a basket. In the context of the 1930s, the story also reflected the Kindertransports – the evacuation of hundreds of Jewish children from Nazi-occupied Europe to the British Commonwealth.
With America’s entry into World War II, Superman, Batman, and other superheroes were pressed into action. “As comic writers,” says Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber), “we had to have villains in our stories. And once World War II started, the Nazis gave us the greatest villains in the world to fight against.”
Jewish illustrators and writers entered the emerging comic book field because other areas of illustration were closed to them. “We couldn’t get into newspaper strips or advertising; ad agencies wouldn’t hire a Jew,” explains MAD magazine cartoonist Al Jaffee. “One of the reasons we Jews drifted into the comic book business is that most of the comic book publishers were Jewish. So there was no discrimination there.”
Most of the first-wave comic book artists and writers never emerged from poverty. Before he made his move, his boss called Lee into his office and asked him to come up with a new superhero concept that would outperform DC Comics’ “The Justice League of America” (which combined the revamped Flash and Green Lantern with mainstays like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman to form a team of superheroes). Lee took up the challenge and, quite possibly, saved the comic book industry.
Lee and artist Jack Kirby (born Jacob Kurzberg) unveiled Fantastic Four #1, a new crime-fighting series featuring four heroes who, for the first time in comic book history, exhibited a broad range of human emotions. Readers could empathize with such characters as Benjamin Grimm (who’d been transformed by cosmic rays into a monstrous pile of orange rocks) despite – or, perhaps, because of – their flaws. To his fellow superheroes, Ben could be a hotheaded jerk, but comics fans attributed his distemper to his being trapped in repulsive orange skin and could feel compassion for him.
Like many Marvel characters, the emotionally challenged Ben became a metaphor for Jews and other minority outsiders who faced discrimination because of their skin color or ethnic roots.

The first thing that springs into your mind when I mention “Chabad Lubavitch” may be the strange affair of the secret tunnel or tunnels discovered under its base in New York in 2024.
But be careful not to partake of what Newsweektermed “frenzied speculation” about the peculiar behaviour of Chabad members and the sighting of a stained mattress. [1]
Jonathan Greenblatt, director of the Anti-Defamation League, toldRolling Stone: “It’s deeply troubling that anyone would use this incident, which the Chabad movement at large has strongly condemned, to draw inappropriate and false comparisons to Hamas tunnels in Gaza or propagate age-old antisemitic conspiracy theories, such as Jews are involved in human trafficking or organ harvesting”. [2]
Given its relatively low profile, you might well assume that, whatever it is up to, Chabad is just a religious sect and plays no real and serious role on a world political stage presented to us as thoroughly secular.
If so, you are gravely mistaken, as Pierre Hillard expertly explains in his book Comprendre l’empire loubavitch (‘Understanding the Lubavitch empire’).
He says that, in fact, the organisation wields global influence at the highest levels and is playing “an absolutely decisive role in the course of human history”. [3]
Hillard traces the Chabad story back to the time of Jesus who, from his own Christian perspective, was the Messiah whose coming had been predicted in biblical Judaism.
But he says that in the centuries before Jesus’s birth, Jewish religious commentary had been predicting “a warrior Messiah, not a suffering one, acting in the sole interests of the Jewish world, which would claim primacy over all the peoples of the earth”. [4]
“This misinterpretation of sacred texts led the Jewish elites, with some exceptions such as Nicodemus, not to recognise Christ as the logical fulfilment of all the prophetic announcements”. [5]
Subsequently, their Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed by the Romans and they were scattered around the place, whether in Rome, Alexandria or Babylon.
They were, of course, still waiting for the “real” Messiah, or Moshiach, to turn up and this was still the warrior version, not the suffering one.
In fact, explains Hillard, the roles are flipped in comparison to the Christian outlook. In Jewish teaching, it is not the Messiah who suffers for the people of the whole world, but the Jewish people who suffer in order to bring the Messiah who will give them control over the whole world.
Therefore, as the Israeli scholar Gershom Scholem set out, the Jewish idea of redemption is not beyond time, as Christians see it, but very physically part of history – specifically Jewish history. [6]
Hillard explains that in the early years of Christianity the rabbinical world found itself confronted with a new entity becoming increasingly important in the Roman empire, which was persuading not just pagans but also Jews to convert to its faith.
Faced with the prospect of their flock joining, and further strengthening, this rival religion, they put together two new books of rabbinic commentary aimed at seeing off the threat – the Jerusalem Talmud and the Babylonian Talmud.
“These texts were written between the first and the sixth centuries and constituted the religious, political and civil code of the rabbinic synagogue. Aimed at retaining the Jewish world, but also at persuading it to wait patiently for the Messiah, these two works are violently anti-Christian”. [7]
From a Talmudic perspective, Jesus had betrayed Moses’ teaching and was consequently condemned to boil for ever in excrement. [8]
Among countless Jewish sources, Hillard quotes rabbi Abraham Cohen’s description of the Talmudic judeo-supremacism that is at the heart of Chabad Lubavitch’s worldview.
“Nothing is more natural, in a literature composed by Jews for Jews, than the exceptional pre-eminence given to the people of Israel. The inhabitants of the world can effectively be divided between Israel and the other nations considered as one block.
“This is obviously a biblical doctrine, but the rabbis have amplified it infinitely. Everywhere the Talmud explicitly insists on the close and unique kinship that exists between God and His people.
“The relationship that unites Israel to God is so intimate that the way in which Israel is treated on earth has repercussions for God in heaven… ‘He who hates Israel is like he who hates Him (God)’”. [9]
Over the centuries, a number of Messianic false-starts have occurred, with one of the most notable involving Sabbatai Zevi (1626-1676),whose influence led to the strange notion of “redemption by sin” in which Jewish biblical laws were deliberately broken. [10]
By “converting” to Islam to save his life, Zevi inspired followers to do the same. [11] A similar thing happened with another pseudo-Messiah, Jacob Frank (1726-1791), who started a trend for fake conversions to Roman Catholicism. [12]
Such subterfuge offered increasing opportunities for infiltration of the corridors of power, which rabbinical circles were deliberately seeking by sending out “emissaries” everywhere.
This was the method used by Dov Ber ben Avraham of Mezeritch (1704-1772), also known as the Maggid of Mezeritch, one of whose followers was rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi (1745-1812), Chabad’s founder and first rebbe. [13]
“Chabad” is the Hebraic acronym of “wisdom”, “understanding” and “knowledge”, while Lubavitch is the Russian village (Lyubavichi) in which this branch of Hassidism was originally based. [14]
Chabad subscribes to the Franco-Sabbatean doctrine that the world will have to experience (or perhaps has now already experienced) great horrors before the Jewish Messiah will come.
As Gershom Scholem explains in his book on Jewish Messianism: “In all these texts, in all these traditions, the announcement of cataclysms, without which the Apocalypses cannot be imagined, is described in dramatic terms, assuming all sorts of forms: world wars, revolutions, epidemics, famines, economic catastrophes and also apostasy, profanation of the name of God, the forgetting of the Torah [Law] and the rejection of all moral order going so far as the overturning of the laws of nature”. [15]
In czarist Russia, where Chabad began, Jews may have sometimes endured repression but they could also enjoy privileges.
Chabad’s website, cited by Hillard, describes how a cache of records recently discovered in St Petersburg’s Russian State Historical Archive details the founding of a Jewish agricultural settlement at Schedrin.
“Significantly, the newly unearthed records show that Schedrin was established by Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Lubavitch (1789-1866), the third rebbe of Chabad, who is commonly referred to as ‘the Tzemach Tzedek’…
“In 1846, records show, Rabbi Menachem Mendel (pictured) purchased the 17.5 square kilometer estate of Schedrin. He settled sixty Jewish families on the land, provided them with building materials and other necessary equipment, and ceded them each a rent free agricultural allotment for a period of 25 years.
“The newly discovered documents also invoke a little known law entitling anyone who settled more than a hundred Jews on their own land to seek Hereditary Honored Citizenship. Accordingly, the Governing Senate of the Russian Empire ultimately nominated Rabbi Menachem Mendel a Hereditary Honored Citizen in 1851.
“This hereditary status would protect generations of Chabad leaders from the draft as well as from other forms of personal persecution, but more importantly it also enabled them to act as more effective ambassadors for Jews and for Judaism in the offices of Imperial bureaucracy”. [16]
Very handy!
Chabad could count on powerful help from abroad in its dealings with the Russian state.
Israel Goldberg recounts how the Chabad leader rabbi Shmuel Schneersohn (1834-1882), aka Rabbi Shmuel of Lubavitch or Maharash, had demanded an audience with the Russian Czar to discuss Jewish rights.
The minister of the interior refused the request and scoffed at the prospect of support coming from abroad, asking what Western bankers could have in common with “your ragged Jews”.
Goldberg says: “The Rebbe did not meet the Czar. However, his pressure on Western financiers did have an effect. The Rothschilds withdrew their investments and the St Petersburg stock exchange tottered that summer”. [17] Hillard adds: “This Rothschild influence is not a myth”. [18]
I have already examined the strong Jewish influence in Russian communism, through the work of Yuri Slezkine, [19] but I will mention in this respect that Hillard (who also cites Slezkine), regards the branch of the movement founded by Leon Trotsky, with its calls for bloodthirsty permanent global revolution, as being a “perfect heir of Franco-Sabbatean thinking”. [20]
I was also interested to see that he describes Chabad’s connections to the Joint Distribution Committee, whose dubious activities I explored earlier this year in ‘A Joint embrace of evil’. [21]
My focus there was on the way in which “The Joint” played a key role at the Evian Conference of 1936 in blocking large-scale Jewish emigration from the Third Reich to anywhere other than Palestine.
And I voiced my suspicion that the organisation’s “humanitarian relief” could have been a cover for money laundering.
Chabad is often accused of this kind of thing, with a website run by Yehudim Neged Chabad (Jews Against Chabad) describing it as a literal mafia: “The schools, synagogues, and other businesses, are the front for their criminal activity. Chabad is involved in white collar crimes such as financial fraud, tax evasion, and money laundering, among other things, in a very organized manner”. [22]
So we should not be surprised to learn that The Joint – set up in New York in 1914 by bankers Jacob Schiff and Felix Warburg along with fellow judeo-supremacist Louis Marshall – used Chabad in 1917 as their sole intermediary in transferring $2.5 million from America to Russian Jews. [23]
Then from 1924 Chabad leader Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn (1880-1950), who was later to move Chabad’s base to New York via Latvia and Poland, participated in the “Agro-Joint” project.
This involved working with the Soviet regime to set up nearly a quarter of a million Jews as farmers in Ukraine and Crimea.
Over the course of the next 13 years, nearly $16 million was channelled from The Joint in the USA to support Jewish agriculture, in collaboration with both Chabad and the communist state. [24]
Chabad had been involved in Palestine very early on its history – its leader Dov ber Schneur (1773-1827) was responsible for its first community in Hebron, which was at the time still part of the Ottoman Empire. [25]
And it seems obvious that this training of Russian Jews to work the land was intimately connected to the long-planned creation of the state of Israel, which would need experienced farmers.
When Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn (pictured) fell out of favour with Stalin’s regime in 1937, and was arrested and sentenced to death, who should come to his aid other than rabbi Steven Wise of The Joint, along with Jewish US Supreme Court judge Louis Brandeis who, as I related in ‘The Big Three and the global cabal’, had been involved with Lord Walter Rothschild in drawing up the Balfour Declaration of 1917 which essentially announced the future creation of the state of Israel. [29]
They and others had enough influence on the Soviet government to save the rebbe’s life and get him out of the USSR.
And that network sprung into action again at the outbreak of the Second World War, when Schneersohn found himself trapped in Nazi-occupied Warsaw.
What transpired only makes any sense if you know that the Nazi regime was a zionist golem, part of whose role was to enable the creation of the state of Israel. [30]
Brandeis this time contacted Benjamin Cohen, an “adviser” to president Franklin D. Roosevelt, who invited him to work with Robert T. Pell of the State Department, a man with direct contacts within the Third Reich.
One of these was Helmut Wohltat, a leading Nazi official who had been in charge of the four-year plan preparing the German economy for war. [31]
Stresses Hillard: “It was therefore a Nazi party member highly placed in the state apparatus who was given the task of acting to save the supreme Jewish representative of the Lubavitch community”. [32]
Wohltat worked on this rabbi-rescuing mission with Wilhelm Canaris, head of Nazi military intelligence, he adds.
“To successfully extricate Yosef Yitzchak and his family from their hiding place, Canaris and Wohltat knew that they needed to recruit a certain type of German soldier, namely those of Jewish origin”. [33]
He explains that there were no fewer than 150,000 of these from which to select a small team. Extraordinarily, this unit duly escorted the rebbe and his family out of Poland and Nazi-occupied territory, right up to the Latvian border, via Berlin, providing them with first-class train tickets and diplomatic passports.
Hillard invites us to imagine the surreal scene of a group of Chabad orthodox Jews travelling in a train full of Nazi soldiers and arriving in the swastika-bedecked Reich capital. [34]
It is worth further noting that Hitler’s Germany played a similar role to Stalin’s Russia in laying the practical ground for the zionist occupation of Palestine.
Under the zionazi Haavara (transfer) agreement of 1933-1941, tens of thousands of German Jews were trained in farming and crafts so as to enable the creation of the kibbutz system in Palestine under the British mandate.
Hillard says this Nazi-zionist collaboration “laid the foundations for the Israeli economy when that state was created in 1948, allowing that young country to withstand the shock, right from the start, of its war against Arab countries”. [35]
Further context was given to the Nazi connection by Yosef Yitzchak’s successor – the seventh and final rebbe in the dynasty, Menachem Mendel Schneerson (1902-1994).
He stated: “It is not impossible for the physical destruction of the Holocaust to be spiritually beneficial. On the contrary, it is quite possible that physical affliction is good for the spirit”.
Schneerson (pictured) went on to compare God to a surgeon who amputates a patient’s limb in order to save his life. The limb “is incurably diseased… The Holy One Blessed Be He, like the professor-surgeon… seeks the good of Israel, and indeed, all He does is done for the good… In the spiritual sense, no harm was done, because the everlasting spirit of the Jewish people was not destroyed”. [36]
Historian Yehuda Bauer remarks: “The Rebbe’s stance, therefore, is clear: The Holocaust was a good thing because it lopped off a disease-ravaged limb of the Jewish people – in other words, the millions who perished in the Holocaust – in order to cleanse the Jewish people of its sins”. [37]
The close links between Chabad and the broader judeo-supremacist mafia became still more apparent under the leadership of this final rebbe in the dynasty.
Hillard points out that he was not educated in the usual Chabad institutions, but by a private tutor, Israel Eidelsohn (1895-1965), a socialist and head of a zionist youth organisation who later changed his name to Bar Yehuda and became a government minister in the state of Israel. [38]
Under Menachem Mendel Schneerson, Chabad no longer viewed zionism as heretical, which had previously been the case.
Indeed, Yehudah Avner writes: “The Lubavitcher Rebbe was a theologian, not a political Zionist. But if Zionism is an unconditional, passionate devotion to the Land of Israel and to its security and welfare, then Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson was a fanatical Zionist”. [39]
Rabbi Zev Segal testifies, also on Chabad’s website: “It became apparent to me that the Rebbe had a tremendous amount of knowledge of what was going on in Israel, including many minute details. He knew who was who in the Knesset and in every one of its subcommittees.
“He knew of every government meeting on every subject, and who was against and/or for a particular position. It was quite an experience to listen to him speak about government meetings as though he was there.
“As well, he knew what was going on with Jews everywhere, whether in Arab countries, Eastern European countries, South Africa, or North and South America. He had to know, in order to send his emissaries to shore up Jewish communities all over the globe”. [40]
The extent of Chabad’s operations has astonished even those at the centre of the more obvious organs of Pax Judaica.
Former Mossad agent and Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Shamir discovered that, in the USSR, Chabad had been busily building up an illegal judeo-supremacist entity.
Chabad proudly report: “What impressed Shamir was the clandestine network of schools, synagogues and communal institutions all operating in contravention of Soviet law”. [41]
In a 2009 interview, Efraim Halevy, director of the Mossad from 1998 to 2002, recalled meeting the rebbe: “He had his own intelligence-gathering network with various sources, including the US government…
“In our conversation it was apparent that he had a tremendous knowledge in the area of intelligence and intelligence-gathering. And his connections were vast. He had connections with the White House and the State Department. He had connections in other places in the world with the powers that be. It was obvious that here was a man of the larger world, not of a small chassidic court.
“He was also a man with a vision – a big vision – and he did not abandon that vision even for a moment. And his vision was expressed not only in theory, but also in action – sending his emissaries all over the world to serve the Jewish nation.
“There is no doubt that in many places in the world Chabad emissaries play a very important role in the continued existence of the Jewish people, and in the continued existence of the Jewish nation as a whole.
“When I served as Israel’s ambassador to the European Union in Brussels, I met the emissaries of Chabad who worked there. And I also met those in Riga and in Sydney. And I believe that if Chabad did not exist, the situation of the continuity of the Jewish nation would be much worse”. [42]
He remarks on Schneerson’s “complicity” with Menachem Begin (pictured – see also main photo), the Irgun terrorist who was Israeli prime minister between 1977 and 1983 and who, says Hillard, showed “real deference with regard to the rebbe“. [43]
Schneerson’s expression of warmongering supremacism during that period was wheeled out again by Chabad in October 2023 to urge Israel to take a mercilessly hard line.
Using the kind of language which has become tragically familiar today, he had compared Palestinian resistance fighters to bacteria and, again using a surgical metaphor, ridiculed the idea that it was useful “to leave all the bacteria inside the wound, and just shift around the bacteria from one area to another”. [44]
Dovid [sic] Margolin reminded Chabad supporters that the rebbe had insisted that “our right to dwell in Israel, and to strongly protect ourselves – not only in Israel, but everywhere in the world – comes directly from G‑d, Creator of heaven and earth”.
He had poured scorn on any idea of “peace talks” to placate world opinion, of claiming to have “the most moral army in the world” or of Israel waiting to be attacked so it could depict its enemies as the real aggressors.
“During the Yom Kippur War, the Rebbe sent message after message to the Israeli high command to capture the two enemy capitals of Cairo and Damascus, not for the purpose of occupation but to defeat the enemy once and for all”. [45]
The apparent impunity afforded Israel in its current genocide has opened the eyes of many to the extent to which judeo-supremacists control world leaders and Chabad has certainly played its part in bringing about that disturbing reality.
The scale of its influence can hardly be overestimated. Take, for instance, the testimony of French zionist politician Meyer Habib (pictured), a close friend of Benjamin Netanyahu, who revealed that the Israeli prime minister has a photo of the Chabad’s last rebbe displayed in his office.
Habib enthused in 2024 that the network “makes the Jewish people shine across the world, whether I find myself in Bangkok, Bali or Bombay, in the most distant parts of the world”.
He said that Jewish security internationally was no longer primarily assured by Israel’s embassies but by the Chabad movement – “they are everywhere”. [46]
Chabad’s links go right to the top of the global financial empire. Hillard writes: “The American Friends of Lubavitch is able to organise meetings addressed by eminent people like Christine Lagarde [president of the European Central Bank], the former German chancellor Angela Merkel and the former president of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso”. [47]
That same body presents its Lamplighter Awards to those who advance its cause and in 2019 the global prize went to Kristalina Georgieva, who was president of the World Bank Group that year, before replacing Lagarde as managing director of the International Monetary Fund and, in 2020, also joining the Board of Trustees at the World Economic Forum (WEF). [48]
Hillard presents visual evidence of Chabad’s global political clout with photos of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin celebrating the Jewish holiday Hanukkah and posing with the associated menorah, a nine-branched candelabrum much loved by Chabad.
He writes that Trump “has benefited from a particular backing on the part of orthodox Jewish circles” – not least via his daughter Ivanka’s conversion to Judaism and marriage to Jared Kushner. [49]
The current US president was awarded the Theodor Herzl Gold Medallion by the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) in 2022, [50] a silver crown from the Israel Heritage Foundation in 2023 and then a menorah from the same entity in 2024, [51] not to mention the grotesque golden pager given to him by Netanyahu in 2025 to celebrate “the power, technological superiority and cunning of Israel against its enemies”. [52]
Trump is even regarded by Chabad supporters as a modern-day equivalent of King Cyrus of Persia who allowed Jews exiled in Babylon to return to the Holy Land in 538 BC, with special coins struck to celebrate the comparison. [53]
As for Putin, Hillard writes of the “numerous ties” that the Russian president has knotted with Chabad Lubavitch circles in his own country and elsewhere. [54]
He was presented with a silver menorah by Chabad’s rabbi Berel Lazar as early as 1999, when he was still only prime minister.
Putin told Chabad that as an official in St Petersburg in 1991, it was he who signed the official documents giving permission for the first opening of a Jewish school in Russia in more than 70 years… and considered it to be a high point in his career.
He also “promised to assist the Jewish community in combating anti-Semitism, building schools and reclaiming former synagogue buildings for Jewish communities”. [55]
And so it continued, with Chabad’s Lazar accompanying President Putin on a state visit to Israel in 2012 [56] and again on his visit to the Moscow Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center, billed as the world’s largest Jewish museum, in 2013. [57]
Hillard points us to a 2019 article on the Israel Hayom site in which rabbi Yehuda Krinsky reveals that Putin told him that “he grew up in St Petersburg, in a Jewish area… he knew all about it. He said about Chabad, he knows Chabad is very active. He spoke about Chabad like a shaliach [emissary]”. [58
The British head of state, King Charles III, also has connections to Chabad, Hillard reveals, and a key character in this respect is Jonathan Sacks (1948-2020), so-called “Baron Sacks”, who was Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth from 1991 to 2013. [59]
In a recorded talk on the Chabad website, Sacks describes how, as a young man, he met the rebbe – “one of the greatest leaders in the Jewish world” – and how this encounter “changed my life”. [60]
At a gala dinner held in central London in May 2013 to mark the completion of Sacks’ stint as Chief Rabbi, the future king called him a “light unto this nation”, “a steadfast friend” and “a valued adviser”. [61]
The Times of Israelreports that upon Sacks’ death in 2020, Charles mourned him as an “irreplaceable loss” and “a trusted guide, an inspired teacher and a true and steadfast friend”. [62]
When you consider that King Charles’ beloved friend Sacks addressed the WEF’s Global Leaders of Tomorrow Summit in 2002, [63] that Charles himself officially launched the WEF’s Great Reset in 2020 [64] and that the WEF is a judeo-supremacist entity, [65] then the overall picture becomes very clear.
In his WEF talk, Sacks spoke of the need to develop “a shared language” that would be “good news for global development” – Hillard regards this as a veiled reference to the Noahide Laws which, alongside the Talmud and the Kabbala, are central to the Chabad outlook. [66]
As I have previously explained, they are the Jewish-devised legal rules which judeo-supremacists think the whole of the rest of the world, the “goyim”, should be forced to obey, on pain of death. [67]
Chabad is behind the promotion of “Education Day”, which honours the memory of the seventh and last rebbe and which celebrates a coming era of global judeo-supremacist domination.
On its website, Nissan Dovid Dubov describes the anticipated arrival of the Moshiach (Messiah) – “the Jewish leader who will redeem Israel in the End of Days” and who will rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem. He adds: “All the nations of the world will recognize Moshiach to be a world leader, and will accept his dominion”. [68]
The rebbe himself explicitly spelled out this agenda when Education Day USA was launched on April 18 1978, his 76th birthday, declaring: “Ideally, education should lead to a world state”. [69]
Hillard writes: “This ideal of a united world – in peace and governed by the Noahide laws for the non-Jews (goyim) living in subordination to Jewish officials themselves controlled and governed by their own codes under the aegis of a Moshiach restoring the glory of Israel – constitutes the final goal of Chabad’s thinking”. [70]
Given that only 0.2% of the world’s population is Jewish, let alone judeo-supremacist, we might wonder how on earth Chabad could imagine that their dream of world domination might ever come true.
The answer is that this is partly due to religious conviction and partly to do with filthy lucre.
Asks Hillard: “Where does the money come from? Who finances this veritable business which is expanding everywhere in the world and which apparently has between 3,500 and 4,000 Chabad centres across every continent?
“This amounts to a real planetary web, allowing it to occupy strategic places so as to increase Chabad Lubavitch power in terms of intelligence – spying under any other name – thereby enabling it to obtain colossal political and financial advantages”. [71]
Chabad has a Wall Street centre which, it boasts, “reaches a core group of 100-plus financial wizards”. [72] It reveals that among those who have lit its Wall Street menorah for Hanukkah are “Lucky” Larry Silverstein (pictured), the property mogul who profited so handsomely from 9/11, and three-term New York mayor Michael Bloomberg. [73]
Hillard lists a number of very wealthy Chabad donors, including the billionaire former Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich and Sheldon and Miriam Adelson, who made their fortune in the world of casinos and were key backers of Trump’s presidential campaigns. [74]
Chabad’s corporate sponsors include Meta/Facebook, Goldman Sachs, BP, Delta Airlines, Bayer, UPS, Coca-Cola, Citibank, Microsoft, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Boeing, Xerox, Walmart, Bank of America, BAE Systems and Lockheed Martin. [75]
These are all familiar names to students of globalism, but it is important to realise that they are not just supporting neo-liberalism or the “military-industrial complex” but a crazed messianic judeo-supremacist cult seeking global domination and the enslavement of the majority “goyim“.
Hillard points out that behind these corporate sponsors lie the “big three” investment funds that ultimately own them – BlackRock, State Street and Vanguard.
I have often quoted Dr Joseph Mercola’s 2021 article in which he suggests that the ultimate owners of these interlocking entities are the Rothschilds, if only because that fits in with everything else I have found out. [76]
Given the Rothschilds’ historical role as defenders of the Chabad leader in Russia and as creators and supporters of the state of Israel, it makes perfect sense that corporations under the control of their BlackRock-State Street-Vanguard nexus would be pouring almost unlimited sums of money into Chabad’s judeo-supremacist operation.
Says Hillard: “Remember that these ‘big three‘ control nearly 89% of the US stock market, whose aim is the privatisation of the world within the framework of a digital feudalism concerning every country in the world, including Putin’s Russia”. [77]
All of this is pretty grim reading and it may seem that the power of the judeo-supremacist cabal is too great for us to be able to take them on and bring them down, despite our hugely superior numbers.
But I see several reasons for optimism.
The first is that the Chabad vision is built on a complete fallacy, an absurd delusion: the Jewish people has not been chosen by God to rule the world and its long-awaited Moshiach will never turn up!
The accumulation of massive wealth in Jewish hands, the creation of the state of Israel and the global reach and influence of judeo-supremacism have undoubtedly created a surge of faith and certainty that the great day is close.
But what happens when it becomes obvious that this is not so, that Chabad and its allies have been peddling a false prophecy?
I think this is already happening, as zionists wake up to the fact that the vast majority of humankind, including many Jews, are horrified and disgusted by their genocidal arrogance.
The truth is that most non-Jews will never accept that we are second-class citizens in this world and that we are obliged to take the knee to authoritarian overlords, renouncing our own beliefs to adopt the ones they order us to embrace.
As this becomes increasingly obvious, as our refusal and resistance slow the supremacist momentum, and as the Moshiach remains conspicuously absent, confidence in the Chabad narrative will start to crumble.
There are already serious divisions between various Jewish sects – Chabad itself split into two factions after the death of rebbe Schneerson in 1994, the dissident group insisting that he was in fact the Messiah, while the others are still waiting for their saviour to show himself. [78]
As the wait goes on and frustration and disillusionment set in, we can expect serious in-fighting and back-stabbing to flare up, allowing the rest of us to sit back and enjoy the sight of our demented enemies tearing themselves apart.

And so this Koch Industries-invested company was on Ann’s radar.
Ann — Tenants aren’t the only ones with concerns. In Houston, after two people died in a boarding house fire, the city issued new rules for operators, including requiring permits. In a suburb of Atlanta, neighbors complained about trash, noise, and numerous cars parked in front of PadSplit properties. Last year, affordable-housing activists in Salt Lake City protested to stop a (non-PadSplit) rooming house development. They argued the model turns basics—such as private bathrooms—into luxuries, which exerts upward pressure on rent prices for everyone.
Those problems haven’t stalled the company’s growth. Founded in 2017 in Atlanta, PadSplit has grown to encompass 6,500 rental units across the U.S. and 5,300 renters. PadSplit has received $35.2 million in venture capital funding, and in 2022 Inc. listed it as one of the fastest-growing real estate firms in the country.
It’s easy to see why landlords gravitate toward this model. Heather Wren, an Atlanta-based landlord, partnered with PadSplit in 2018. She started with one property that had formerly been occupied by a woman with three children who was using a housing choice voucher via a program run by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) that pays a portion of low-income tenants’ rent. Wren converted the home to a PadSplit that housed six individuals who weren’t receiving the government subsidy. She quickly discovered what studies have long shown: Renting to poor people is good for business.
“PadSplit has been the key to higher profits,” Wren told me. She now owns 10 properties with a total of 65 rooms and plans to keep growing.
When I interviewed LeBlanc in March, he contended that the real problem is not with his company but with government inefficiency. PadSplit’s roots go back to 2008 when LeBlanc saw signs of the impending foreclosure crisis in Atlanta.
“It was disturbing to see what was going on in some of these neighborhoods,” he said. “And I knew that housing projects were also shutting down.”
The relationship between PadSplit and the Koch family (often historically referenced as the Koch Brothers) centers primarily on financial backing through philanthropic and venture investment arms, alongside a coincidental executive name connection.
1. Venture Backing via Stand Together
PadSplit, an affordable marketplace platform that allows property owners to rent out single-family homes room-by-room, is financially backed by Stand Together Ventures Lab. Stand Together is a philanthropic and venture organization founded and heavily funded by billionaire Charles Koch to support market-based solutions to social problems, including the affordable housing deficit. [1, 2, 3, 4]
2. Strategic Alignment on Workforce Housing
The Koch network’s investment in PadSplit aligns with their broader, multi-million dollar venture into single-family and workforce rental real estate. For instance, Koch Real Estate Investments—a subsidiary of Koch Industries—previously made a massive $200 million equity investment in Amherst Holdings, one of the nation’s largest single-family rental operators. The network favors companies like PadSplit that utilize private-sector innovation and existing housing infrastructure rather than government-subsidized programs to decrease rent burdens.
3. Executive Team Overlap
Adding to the association, PadSplit’s current Chief Growth Officer is Adam Kolojejchick-Koch. He leads the company’s sales, marketing, and expansion efforts to recruit real estate investors to the platform.
I met Ana through the non-profit program I am heading up, both in Lincoln County and Jefferson County. Family Independence Initiative of Oregon is a pilot project collecting valuable stories from working families in exchange for $840 for one-year participation.
The quarterly deposit of $175 I had just put into her account precipitated Ana to contact me. She told me the money helped her make a car payment. She also is attempting to get more people in Jefferson County to sign up, or at least to email me.
“Sometimes having people in your circle to support you can mean the world of difference,” said Joann, who talked with me in Madras at the United Methodist Church, while discussing the new initiative Jefferson and Lincoln counties are rolling out. “I think my circle of support has given me invaluable emotional and material support not found anywhere else.”
The new gig for me is with Family Independence Initiative, a nonprofit started 18 years ago through the research tools and impetus of the founder, Mauricio L. Miller (author of the book, “The Alternative: Most of What You Believe About Poverty Is Wrong”).
For 450 households in Jefferson County, the chance to be part of a networking and peer support pilot could change the face of how social services staffing and funding are delivered in Oregon. The project is jointly supported by the Oregon Department of Human Services, and the goal is to engage with people who go in and out of poverty and give them networking tools to end that cycle.
FII is a successful model in other cities — Oakland, Austin, Cincinnati, Boston, Albuquerque and a half dozen other cities. What has occurred in those cities is nothing short of miraculous.
Jorge Blandon, executive vice president of Family Independence Initiative, was out here in Newport at the end of May and talked with a dozen households about the project — basically getting a household to form a cohort web of five or six other households to learn and share the value of social networking.
The 12-month participation process is pretty simple: register the family through a website, Up Together, and then each month, the household records progress and goals and challenges.
“For me, this sounds like a win-win,” said Jewel, a secretary for an antipoverty program in Lincoln County. “It makes sense that people are their best supports, their best avenues for networking.”
My job is to get in front of households and present the steps of joining this Lincoln County pilot, which is ultimately about learning directly from the community. Members receive $100 for signing up, and then $700 is paid out quarterly.
I presented the project to groups in Madras last month, and we will be at the Latin Festival Sept. 14, at Sahalee Park. Individuals at the community event in the park were able to ask the questions most people are concerned with: “Where does this information go? Is my private journaling and family budget kept private?”
We are in the process of hiring an on-the-ground site director for Jefferson County.
“Building networks for struggling families is really the key to their self-sufficency,” said Pastor Nancy Slabaugh Hart, of the Madras United Methodist Church.
Family Independence Initiative uses sophisticated language learning tools. The information people put on the Up Together site is looked at as aggregate data, meaning those data points from individuals are put into algorithms that help FII determine what families are doing to get out of poverty. All information is anonymous, and secure. Then FII reports back to DHS about the findings.
Part of the attraction for me to undertake this half-time job is that I have been working in and around communities living through many forms of poverty and life challenges. From educator in gang-prevention programs in El Paso and Spokane, to social worker for Portland homeless and within a transition facility for veterans and their families facing homeless in Beaverton, I have had years working with courageous and resourceful individuals and families.
My role is to introduce the project, get people enrolled and let the families (this could be a single parent, a couple with no children, single individuals, married or not) develop the web of communication and support. I have a complete hands-off role in terms of assisting families with their goals and needs, or locating resources. I do offer up support for the online journal writing over the 12 months of networking.
We all know about American communities which participated in so-called barn-raising events. Those events were people-powered, community-based, with no government or nonprofit involvement.
How Chinatowns across this country were founded is illustrative of peer support, peer networking and social capital: families, friends, businesses and churches came together to provide jobs, micro-loans, community space, spiritual and education support. Again, no government or social services agencies were called upon.
In 2019, families in Jefferson County have multiple challenges — single-parent households with that parent working two jobs, but still not getting ahead; families that get some form of support (food stamps, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, housing vouchers) but want to get out of the cycle of multigenerational poverty; seasonal work; expensive housing.
The FII web page states, “As a nation, we have missed an opportunity to invest directly in the initiative and strength of low-income families working toward economic mobility. Seventy-five percent of low-income families move above the federal poverty line within four years. Yet, 50% slip back under within five years. Under the current approach, families struggle to build the necessary assets to weather the next crisis and aren’t rewarded for their initiative in doing so. FII is changing this resource gap for low-income families by partnering with, learning from, and investing directly in families.”
What FII wants is data and stories from the enrolled families or households. From there, a hundred data points are recorded and then mapped in graphs and charts so the heads of DHS can see what social services are missing and what families are really doing to rise out of poverty.
For Blandon, the mission at FII and for any family living in poverty is clear.
“At its core, what FII is doing is trying to bring (connections, choice, and capital) back to families,” he said. “We know that families are the experts. How else would they survive certain conditions? They’re coming up with creative ways to support each other.”
“FII is trying to push for a new system — a system that looks at working poor communities in a different light. They are not moochers or takers. They are not poor because they’re lazy; quite the opposite,” said Blandon. “We’re trying to shed that light by leveraging technology and data.”

How Pay For Success Finance Will Prey Upon The Poor
One of the biggest things we’re up against, and something few people are talking about, is social impact investing and pay for success finance. Within the hollowed-out shell of the welfare state, which admittedly was always inadequate and used for purposes of racialized social control, global finance has built a new machine that will use predictive analytics, artificial intelligence, and wearable and screen-based technologies to monitor the global poor and profit from their misery.
This effort is being carried out in partnership with the non-profit sector, higher education, think tanks, and global foundations. Many involved identify as liberal, even progressive. Successful resistance will require stopping Trump, the Koch brothers, and ALEC, as well as a corporate, militarized Blue Wave that has every intention of stabilizing late-stage capitalism with technocratic “evidence-based” solutions. Make no mistake; this is a fully bipartisan enterprise.
Outcomes-based contracts are this machine’s operating system. Contracts employ pay-for-performance agreements that reimburse service providers IF they produce specified success metrics. These metrics are narrowly defined and chosen for their ability to be gamed. Contrived solutions offer up fake “success” to enrich investors at the expense of vulnerable populations. Think standardized test scores as success metrics for education or Fitbit step counts for preventative health.
This machine requires a steady supply of people labeled deficient by those in power. Like batteries in the Matrix, the poor are meant to be the fuel. The machine does not care for their actual well-being; its sole purpose is to maximize profit. In that it is similar to the capitalist Western medical model where Big Pharma opts for chronic disease management over research leading to cures. Pay for success will not empower the poor, but instead manage them and harvest their data indefinitely.
The infrastructure for this system was put in place in the years leading up to the financial crisis of 2008. After toxic mortgages imploded, financiers needed another way to keep global capital circulating. It had to be even bigger than real estate debt, since global wealth continues to become more and more concentrated. The next BIG target would be financialized public benefit systems. Through financialization, resources are siphoned from the real economy into the financial sector, where demands for short-term profit lead to instability, overwhelming debt, income inequality, and wage stagnation.
To justify this shift, proponents of pay for success insist governments will never have sufficient resources to care for their people. Services MUST be outsourced. This in turn opens up vast global markets for speculative investment in human capital. The big money isn’t to be had running human services, which are admittedly hard to turn a profit on, but rather in the trade of debt associated with providing those services. Such a development isn’t surprising, given the power finance and technology interests like Alphabet and Goldman Sachs hold over elected officials. Governments have been captured, and as hostages of transnational capital, they’re compelled to go along with this brutal scheme.
After its fin-tech makeover, the new welfare state will essentially function as a maze into which poor people are forced by social work navigators. Technologies will track, predict, and influence behavior. The digital dust the poor generate as they attempt to negotiate punitive bureaucracies will flow to social sector dashboards, informing hedge fund bets in real time. With their varied portfolios of trauma, vulnerable populations will replace real estate in the lead-up to the next Big Short.
Investors don’t put money in markets they expect to dry up. Thus, logic dictates that turning poverty into a global investment market will only increase poverty. Social impact markets require an ever-expanding supply of people deemed cheaply fixable according to the terms investors set. The fixes offered aren’t meant to materially improve lives long-term. That would require redistribution of resources, something unthinkable for the likes of Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg. While poverty may be reduced somewhat, it is an essential feature of the design. For pay for success to thrive, homelessness, addiction, mental illness, hunger, violence, unemployment, broken families, and uncertainty must remain the norm. Hedge funds hate stability, and they’re the ones driving social impact investing. If everyone had enough to live a stable life, the gambling would have to come to an end.
Vulture philanthropies seeded this market. After many grant cycles, the non-profit sector has been conditioned to impose toxic solutions without question, collecting the data needed to justify venture capital’s profit-taking. Having been integrated into the machine, these partners in crime are tasked with managing populations that black box algorithms have identified as “at risk.” These artificial labels will, of course, be disproportionately applied to Black and Brown communities. The system demands broken people. Broken people are the raw material. As a result, the system is incentivized to manufacture data and create as many broken people as hedge funds require to keep global capital in optimal circulation.
Social sector workers are also part of the human capital pipeline, caught in this web along with the poor. The system intends to extract as much data and impose as much surveillance as it possibly can, which is why those administering harmful solutions must get creative in identifying others with whom they can organize. This shift will be catastrophic for educators, healthcare providers, therapists, and social workers across the globe. Effective resistance will need to unite people across diverse workplaces.
The United Way is a partner in these efforts, as is Strive Together out of Ohio. They’ve identified a permanent underclass for “collective impact” processing called ALICE: Assets Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. These are the households of the working poor: children with unstable housing, indebted college graduates, workers living paycheck to paycheck, patients with chronic illness, disabled veterans, the elderly. Pay for success “solutions” will process them as commodities via ed-tech, tele-health, tele-therapy, and “smart” housing.
Soon large segments of the population will find their life choices subject to digital engineering, forced onto prescriptive pathways, jumping through hoops into which structural racism has been embedded in computer code. Smart phones will play a major role as benefits are moved to online platforms and linked to digital identity. It is the phones with their biometric capacity that facilitate transfers of value and data and enable tracking and analysis of impact. Phones will be the minders of the poor. Those with phones can have no expectation of privacy.
Such systems are being piloted on unhoused people in Austin now with backing from Bloomberg Philanthropies, a major impact investor. The state of Illinois also has a working group setting up Blockchain birth certificates and is looking to digitize SNAP benefits so coded nudges can be used to push “good” food choices. As the poor have their welfare inputs evaluated against their economic and behavioral outputs, the rich will sit on the sidelines placing bets. Either way the rich win, because there’s always someone willing to take the short position.
Beyond financialization of human life, these data-driven systems also legitimize increased surveillance of large segments of the population, especially Black and Brown communities already subject to militarized policing. Resisters will be viewed as insurgents and subject to violent counterinsurgent interventions as we saw in Ferguson and at Standing Rock. Wearable and screen-based technologies and interoperable data systems, like Project Unicorn headquartered a few blocks from here, will feed a vast network of signals intelligence to monitor the behavior of the poor, predicting the likelihood of pushback. The Minerva Research Initiative was set up by DARPA (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) for exactly this purpose. It’s not hard to imagine the impact such intelligence will have on resistance movements.
So, what does social impact digital surveillance look like?
It looks like behavior tracking apps for low-income mothers.
It looks like play tables that video record toddlers and score their social behaviors.
It looks like online preschool.
It looks like brain wave monitoring headbands and executive function enhancing video games for students.
It looks like wearable tech that tracks vital signs for substance users.
It looks like online cognitive behavioral therapy for prisoners.
It looks like Fitbits and Internet of Things pill caps for Medicaid patients.
It looks like “smart” supportive housing with integrated IoT monitoring.
It looks like tablet-based overseas monitoring of seniors.
It looks like virtual reality death simulation training for hospice workers.
Once you peek under the hood, you realize what a grotesque business social impact investing actually is. These tools are built on 400 years of racial capitalism. It is the Doctrine of Discovery with Blockchain replacing double-entry bookkeeping and smartphones and digital identity systems replacing shackles. It is a system that arose in tandem with cloud-based computing, broadband, 5G, and the Internet of Things. These advancements are inextricably linked to the interests of the US military and intelligence community, which is why we must recognize that as much as we have come to rely on our devices, true liberation will never come through digital channels. It can’t; our opponents run the cloud.
We’re living through a period of orchestrated mass confusion and distraction. Some are sitting like frogs in simmering pots, distracted on their phones as the steam billows around them. Others are forced to play real-life games of Frogger, heads down, crossing dangerous highways, dodging crises right and left with little opportunity to see, let alone plan for, what is coming.
South Africa and Australia have piloted public benefits on Blockchain linked to digital identity. The state of Illinois is looking into it as well. We need to stop them politically, and we must develop alternative networks of support outside existing government and non-profit structures. We need to get out of our simmering pots and look up to the horizon. We need to do it soon. — Alison McDowell
What AnnLarson and I touched upon was the monopolization of food and the “insecurity” of grocery workers is tied to the slave wages and long hours. I have first-hand experience with cashiers and other retail service folk living in vans. I was both a social services worker getting the houseless and just released from prison and those with substance abuse histories JOBS, sometimes felony friendly, and some that needed jobs like warehouse work, and service work, including chopping fruit and frying chickens. Corporate America on down the line, to the very same struggling managers of these places are hell on wheels, retribution focused, and wannabe drill fucking sargeants.
Ann — “In 2020, at the height of the pandemic, I got a job in a supermarket where my colleagues and I were paid poverty wages to do essential work. I came away from the experience humbled and determined to share what I had learned. The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a CIA off-shoot that was founded in 1983 with the purpose of advancing political propaganda and U.S. regime-change operations.

The Israeli Ministry of Defense and Israeli defense companies have directed millions in unreported funding to U.S. university research programs for weapons development, sponsoring research directly or serving as the pass-through entity for the funding, a Drop Site investigation has found.
A sample of state and university audits, foreign-funding disclosures, and other institutional records identified millions of dollars in financial ties over the last two decades between the Israeli Ministry of Defense (MOD), Israeli weapons manufacturers, and American universities, much of which does not appear consistently in national databases intended to track foreign funding into U.S. universities.
An analysis of audit records, building on findings compiled by the Antiwar Initiative, an academic research group that documents the connections between universities and the global arms industry, found more than $15 million of unreported or inconsistently reported entries for funding tied to the Israeli MOD or defense manufacturers.
The true scale of Israeli support is difficult to determine because entries for such funding were often not reported in public filings mandating disclosure of foreign gifts, but were discovered by manually cross-referencing public and internal databases, audit records, and acknowledgments in academic papers. Some projects listed in university materials as being sponsored by the Israeli MOD or defense companies also did not include the amounts of funding provided, or contained inconsistent or contradictory records in audit databases.
Drop Site reviewed and verified public records that showed research grants, tuition payments, and receipts of gifts totaling millions of dollars to dozens of colleges and universities around the country. The data shows examples of financial support and sponsorship for American researchers from the Israeli Ministry of Defense as well as Israeli weapons manufacturers like Elbit Systems.
Records dating from 2004 to 2025 point to a large number of schools that have had financial relationships with the Israeli MOD or Israeli weapons manufacturers, including Columbia, Cornell, Princeton, Harvard, Northwestern, Georgia Tech, Texas Tech, the University of Connecticut, the University of Tennessee, the University of Maryland, the University of Florida, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Rhode Island, the University of New Mexico, the Washington University in St. Louis, and the State University of New York.

Earlier today, an Israeli Court acquitted Yona Simcha Schreiber, a 36-year-old Israeli settler from the occupied West Bank settlement of Peduel, of criminal responsibility for the brutal April 28 assault on a French nun in Jerusalem. The court ruled that Schreiber suffered from schizophrenia and was in a psychotic state during the attack. Instead of prison, the judge ordered his hospitalization for up to six years.
Surveillance video documented the attack in occupied Jerusalem, where the footage shows Schreiber shoving the nun to the ground and kicking her violently while she lay defenseless. The Israeli occupation police arrested him the same day, while prosecutors charged him with assault causing bodily harm motivated by religious hostility.
Demographic data proves this colonial erasure. While the Palestinian Christian population inside the1948 borders has grown to approximately 187,900, their share of the population in the occupied West Bank and Gaza has plummeted over the last century. In Bethlehem alone, Palestinian Christians made up roughly 85 percent of the population in 1950. Today, they constitute only 10 to 12 percent. Surveys cite occupation restrictions as the primary driver for this drop.
The acquittal of Schreiber proves how the Israeli legal system aligns with settler violence. For Palestinian Christians, this acquittal is not a legal loophole but Israel’s main policy. The occupation’s courts do not defend the indigenous but they do provide the paperwork for genocide and the impunity to enforce it.

What Antonio Piccarolo’s A Guerra e a Paz na História (War and Peace in History – 1940) tells us about recent armed conflicts.
Piccarolo demonstrates how craving for dominance, ambition for glory, religious fanaticism, whims of rulers, trivial slights, and false pride are causes of war and, going deeper into the question, he concludes that “the true cause is always one, the economic cause which, depending on the circumstances of time and place, adopts various forms”. For Piccarolo, schools and especially the press cover up the real motives of tyrants. All modern wars are preceded by press campaigns, which seem to have the single aim of stirring up discord and fanning the flames of hatred.”

We either get complete nihilism or fantasy with little in between. From the Levant to the Andes, the old order is not simply being challenged but rather systematically dismantled and replaced by a new architecture of control, one that’s not collapsing but rather transforming.

Syria’s Fall, Russia’s Handover & Their Vulnerabilities
A significant portion of our dialogue centered on the fall of Syria with an emphasis on Russia’s pragmatic and naive moves that have also made it quite vulnerable to Western ambitions. Contrary to the popular narrative of a triumphant Russia against Ukraine expanding its influence, we argue that the situation in Syria exposes Russia to being in a position of retreat and scrambling, surrounded by a very fragile multipolar dream.
The collapse of the Assad government and the subsequent rise of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) under Jolani has been widely misread. Far from a strategic victory for Russia, their now proven handover of Syria, (which we have discussed with Vanessa ad nauseam) exposes Moscow’s profound vulnerability. Based on our own sources, Russia, once the guarantor of Assad’s survival, is now negotiating from a position of weakness with the Al-Qaeda affiliated HTS, led by Jolani, and is eager to salvage its military foothold at the Tartus naval base and the Hmeimim air base.
Under the old agreements with Assad, Russia enjoyed near-total sovereignty, diplomatic immunity, and indefinite access, privileges that have vanished under the new memorandum of understanding with Jolani. The bases are now slated to become joint training facilities, with HTS personnel occupying half the space and civilian control returning to ports and airports. This isn’t a simple downgrade but a humiliation for a power that once projected force across the Mediterranean, a stark indicator of how far its position has deteriorated compared to the ironclad guarantees once provided by President Assad. Notwithstanding, the Ukrainian forces along with the terrorist forces Russia’s long fought, are now forced allies via the new Syria.
The Corruption Within Russia’s Military, Its Reduced Spheres of Influence & Ukraine’s Shadow War
The erosion of Russian influence is not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern, one that began to form itself much more clearly after the fall of Damascus. We reconnect the dots between the fall of Syria, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and the expansion of Ukrainian and NATO-backed forces into Africa and the Caspian Sea. This multi-front pressure, combined with deep-seated corruption within the Russian oligarchy and military that was laid bare by the Ukraine conflict, has left Moscow overstretched.
Drawing on firsthand intelligence from Russian military sources in Syria and Ukraine, it appears Putin had been systematically misled about the readiness of his armed forces. The promised stockpiles of drones, for example, never materialized—a gap that forced Moscow to rely on Iranian-supplied UAVs. This pattern of deception is endemic to a system where oligarchic interests and military corruption have festered for decades. The sacking of Defense Minister Shoigu and several of his deputies was acknowledged as a symbolic move, but the underlying structures remain intact. The consequence is a Russian military that cannot sustain multiple theaters of operations simultaneously.
Further, Ukraine has become a black hole, draining resources and attention, while Syria, Africa, and the South Caucasus have become fronts where Moscow is forced to play defense rather than offense. Russia’s strategic overreach, built on false assurances, has left it exposed and scrambling for survival as the Ukraine conflict has metastasized into a global proxy war.
Ukrainian special forces and NATO-linked operatives have been embedded in Syria since 2023, not only training HTS fighters but also coordinating false-flag operations in Iraq to destabilize resistance actors. This appears to be a deliberate U.S. and NATO strategy to bleed Russia on multiple fronts simultaneously, using Ukraine as a proxy army that grants NATO member states plausible deniability. The result is a Russia that is besieged not by a single adversary but by a coordinated, global campaign designed to fracture its influence and exhaust its resources.
The hardly ever talked about corruption in Russia’s military isn’t merely NATO-fueled propaganda or fake news, even if few but them are reporting it, but a sad reality very well-known to locals involved in the military and Russians informed on the geopolitics of the country. There’s many who have spoken out about not being paid, or being paid less than offered, on the harsh treatment, and on the lies to the President about drones and equipment. Meanwhile, Moscow’s inability to project power effectively has emboldened regional actors like Turkey and Israel, while its long-standing policy of pragmatism and its historical reluctance to fully commit to an ideological battle are now being seen as strategic weaknesses–noted as well by Iran.
Unlike China, which has invested heavily in soft power, infrastructure, trade, and diplomatic engagement, Russia has relied almost exclusively on hard power and oligarchic networks to project influence. This approach seems to have been proven catastrophic. The oligarchs, many of whom are Western-educated and deeply integrated into global financial systems, have acted more as Trojan horses than as vanguards of Russian interests. Their corruption and self-serving actions have undermined state goals, while their personal ties to Israel and the West have made them unreliable instruments of national policy. Moscow’s reliance on oligarchic capital mirrors the very capitalist cabal that Russia ostensibly opposes, leaving it ideologically compromised and strategically paralyzed. In contrast, China’s soft power expansion through the Belt and Road Initiative and its growing presence in Africa and Latin America has quietly outpaced Russia’s military adventurism, securing influence without the crippling costs of direct confrontation.
Internally Russia is facing inflation, internet disruptions, grain shortages, Ukrainian attacks on major energy infrastructures, Ukrainian drone attacks on residencies in Moscow, including attacks on major delivery hubs like Wildberries, gas lines and fuel shortages, growing disapproval from citizens on the length of the war and the increasing difficulties—these are unfortunately weakness NATO can and will exploit, toward their dreams of Balkanization. But you will not hear this on any pro-Russian or State Media; only note it is happening and will come out eventually. Our mentioning of this isn’t to bash Russia, but rather alert people to a darker reality that the country is heading toward—one any honest journalist would reveal. Russia’s recent actions are not calculated withdrawals but reluctant actions by a military machine hamstrung by corruption, overextension, and a global shadow war against it.
Latin America’s Fall: Puppets, Earthquakes, and Zionist Expansion
From West Asia and Russia, we turn to the Western Hemisphere where a similar, if not more decisive, offensive is underway. The US-Israeli-Zionist takeover of Latin America is rapidly advancing, and the election of far-right, US-backed candidates in Peru and Colombia are not democratic expressions but a coordinated coup orchestrated by Israeli-linked intelligence firms bringing pro-U.S.-Israel leaders into power. We touch on former Colombian President Gustavo Petro’s accusations that private intelligence firms like Black Cube and Black Core are behind the fixing of many elections, including Colombia’s. These operatives have been accused of fixing elections, destabilizing leftist governments, and paving the way for fascist leaders who are openly loyal to Washington and Tel Aviv.
In Colombia, President Abelardo de la Espriella—a Trump-voting, U.S. citizen who made his fortune as a Miami lawyer defending drug traffickers—has already recognized Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights and withdrawn from the ICC case against Israel, all while welcoming Israeli “aid” in the wake of a devastating earthquake. He exemplifies the new brand of puppet leaders installed to serve the interests of a global elite, effectively stripping their nations of any semblance of genuine sovereignty. It’s impossible to ignore the uncanny timing of these natural disasters, which have consistently served as pretexts for Zionist humanitarian intervention, masking a deeper agenda of military occupation and economic exploitation.
Once the standard-bearer of anti-imperialism in the Western Hemisphere, Venezuela has now reopened its embassy in Israel, welcomed Israeli military and intelligence advisors, and watched 50% of its oil production, some 500,000 barrels per day, flow into the United States. The situation in Venezuela has been particularly devastating and at face, a disgusting, if not reluctant, betrayal of its Chavista legacy driven by U.S. blackmail and economic strangulation. The recent earthquake, which devastated vulnerable communities, has become a vehicle for disaster capitalism, with Israeli NGOs and NATO-linked agencies swooping in to exploit the chaos. The government’s decision to reopen relations with Israel and welcome its “aid” after a devastating earthquake, signals a complete capitulation but also does not change Venezuela’s status of surviving under the barrel of a gun and sequestered. Venezuela also withdrew from the ICC, but this began under Nicolás Maduro and was finished under Delcy Rodríguez.
Looking ahead, the upcoming October elections in Brazil are a crucial battleground. A victory for Flávio Bolsonaro, who is running a campaign adorned with American and Israeli flags, would effectively complete the takeover of the continent, leaving only Cuba as a potential holdout, with Nicaragua hanging on in Central America and Mexico facing Washington–another vulnerable nation for its proximity and economic closeness to the U.S.
The AI Panopticon and the Criminalization of Resistance
This strategic victory for the Zionist-US axis is, in our opinion, part of a larger plan for global control, a scaffolding of a global panopticon where AI data centers and sophisticated surveillance technology and biometric tracking systems are the new tools of empire designed to criminalize resistance and make dissent nearly impossible if not entirely criminal. The Gaza model, a strategy of total surveillance, AI-driven targeting, and relentless military pressure, is being exported as a template for domestic population control in the West and beyond.
Ultimately, we once again remind our listeners and readers that Iran and its Axis of Resistance now stand as the only remaining ideological bulwark against this globalizing force that transcends nation states as we know them and can be more acutely described as a convergence of global, capitalist, predator elites. Russia is right now in more danger to Balkanization than it has been in a long time, as much as others wishfully hope this is lunacy. It remains now a struggling great power, more interested in securing its seat at the capitalist table, re-hashed as the BRICS bloc, than in leading a principled fight against it.
Meanwhile, China’s rise through soft power does not liberate it from its clear embracing of pragmatic global capitalism, rather than a humanitarian or even “communist” alternative. In fact, China, far from being an alternative to this dystopia, is itself a leader in AI and surveillance technology, suggesting that the emerging world order is less a clash of ideologies than a competition among technocratic elites for supremacy in a dehumanized system. As much as China is structurally in government modeled after a communist project, and is not behaving in the same imperial and aggressive manner as Washington, its behavior and output in the global economy relies fully on successful capitalist objectives.
We emphasize in our conversation that the era of global wars, served in neat, defined lines, is over. We’ve entered the era of continuous, multi-theater conflicts where the battle for humanity’s future is being fought not just in West Asia, but everywhere simultaneously. Wars will no longer be segmented into boxes but are part of these continuous and transformative waves. Seeking to put a bow on a box-end to the Iran war, will prevent clear analysis of the reality that this war is the beginning of a long, enduring, and global fight. That these conflicts, like the War in Ukraine, the fights in Latin America, the War on Palestine, Lebanon, and everything happening in Syria, are all entirely connected and orchestrated by the same people. This will become clear as time goes on, and the reality that the war isn’t on States, but on people, will also become vivid.
The takeaway here is that resistance must now be local, community-based, and self-sufficient. Neither Russia, nor China, nor BRICS will save anyone. The only reliable defense is the cultivation of resilient communities, grounded in mutual aid and a clear-eyed recognition of the reality we are in, with a vivid picture of the monster we face.
Without accountability, what Israel unleashed in Gaza will be normalized for the world. In such scenarios, the media has already proved its role and complicity.

They moved in bright patterns above the water, reds and yellows and greens flashing like dancing rainbows that made the air itself feel alive. Children ran with the speed that belongs only to freedom and joy. Their laughter rose louder than the coastal wind against the kite fabric. Teachers moved between them to help untangle lines. A few strings snapped and fluttered down while others climbed higher. For hours the only sounds were squeals, bare feet on warm sand, and the steady rush of air against colored paper. I stood there with warm tea stinging my hands and two cameras heavy on my chest.
One moment no official report ever recorded stayed with me. A small girl near the water kept stopping to press her kite string against her cheek. She closed her eyes every time she did that, as if checking that the pull was real and that the sky was still open to her. She did it a few times. Each time she closed her eyes for a moment before she ran again. While watching her, I understood that something so ordinary in Gaza had become extraordinary simply because it was still possible.
That same day the children flew roughly six thousand kites as part of UNRWA’s Summer Games, a rare organized effort to provide normality under the siege. Occupation Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered a forceful response, declaring that a balloon, a kite, or a drone would be treated the same way, with or without explosives. In a joint statement with the prime minister’s office, he threatened intensified targeted strikes and possible evacuations of areas used as launch sites. The rule was clear, any object capable of crossing the perimeter would be treated as a potential threat. Under this colonial doctrine, there is no meaningful difference between a child’s handmade paper kite and a bomb. Confirmation that the kites carried nothing changed nothing.

French far-left leader Jean-Luc Melenchon is seen as the most likely rival to far-right candidate Marine Le Pen in next year’s presidential run-off, a Monday poll showed, underlining a deeply polarised electorate as Emmanuel Macron’s presidency draws to a close.

Melenchon, the candidate of the far-left France Unbowed (LFI) party, is seen reaching a run-off in at least three of the five scenarios polled, while he tied for second place in a fourth scenario. Le Pen is seen beating him easily in a run-off.
The poll makes sobering reading for France’s centrist candidates who are struggling to reach an electorate that is increasingly polarised.
As Macron’s second and final term comes to an end, the unpopular president leaves behind a hollowed-out political centre and weak economy, opening space for hardline parties, such as LFI and Le Pen’s National Rally.
“The risk of Mrs Le Pen and Mr Melenchon facing each other in the second round is real and serious,” centrist candidate Edouard Philippe told reporters on Monday.
Melenchon was seen winning around 16% to 17% in the first round, while Le Pen would get 35% to 38% of votes. Le Pen would win 64% of the votes against Melenchon in the run-off.

Superbly ignored by the media until recently, Jean-Luc Mélenchon is the new flavour of the day in the French presidential campaign. In truth, while trying to account for his dramatic rise in the polls – latest reports put him at 17% of the vote – most commentators could not help pour scorn on the Left Front candidate.
A survey of the main articles recently published in the British media provides a compelling case study of political prejudice and misunderstanding. Mélenchon is described as an “Anglo-Saxon basher with a whiny voice” (the Independent), a “populist” who’s “on the hard-left” (all newspapers) and a “bully and a narcissist, out to provoke” (BBC). More sympathetic commentaries compare him to George Galloway or depict him as a “far-left firebrand”, a “maverick” and the “pitbull of anti-capitalism”.
It is striking that the more favourable assessment of Mélenchon’s politics remains off the mark. Mélenchon is seen as a “lovable but old-fashioned leftwinger”. This fails to capture the essence of his political ambitions. Mélenchon’s rise has nothing to do with “1970s-style politics and nostalgia”, but is linked instead to his resolute take on the current capitalist crisis. He tells audiences that the austerity policies implemented across Europe are not only unfair but also counterproductive (even the Financial Times agrees). Mélenchon’s debating skills serve his cause, but he is also a lettered pedagogue: a dignified politician who has never participated in vulgar reality shows. What is more, Mélenchon is a French republican and a socialist, not a “far-left” or a fringe politician. He spent 30 years in the Socialist party unsuccessfully arguing that it should be a force at the service of ordinary workers, and he was a cabinet minister in Lionel Jospin’s government.
Oratory is politically useless if one does not have an important message to deliver. Mélenchon has one: neoliberalism has failed, so it would be suicidal to persist with its inadequate policies. The French MEP also had a credible programme. In didactically crafted speeches or in media interviews, he radically departs from mainstream politicians by explaining that the economic crisis is systemic, that is to say that it is due to our flawed political choices and priorities. Our societies have never been as productive and wealthy as today, but the majority of the population are getting poorer despite working harder and harder. The problem is not a question of wealth production (as neoliberals and Blairite social democrats would have us believe), but of redistribution of wealth.
In France raging pundits and opponents call the Left Front programme an “economic nightmare” or a “delirious fantasy”. Shouldn’t they instead use this terminology to describe the banking debacle or austerity policies across Europe? Mélenchon’s growing number of supporters view it as common sense and salutary: a 100% tax on earnings over £300,000; full pensions for all from the age of 60; reduction of work hours; a 20% increase in the minimum wage; and the European Central Bank should lend to European governments at 1%, as it does for the banks. Here are a few realistic measures to support impoverished populations. Is this a revolution? No, it is radical reformism; an attempt to stop the most unbearable forms of economic domination and deprivation in our societies. Fat cat bosses may leave France; they will be replaced by younger and more competent ones who will work for a fraction of their wages. “Humans First!” is more than a manifesto title, it is a democratic imperative: a sixth republic in place of the current republican monarchy; the nationalisation of energy companies (as energy sources are public goods) and, less often noticed, the ecological planning of the economy, the core of Mélenchon’s political project.
Mélenchon has done French democracy a further favour. In a memorable TV debate, he emphatically defeated the extreme right for the first time in 30 years. Concentrating on policy details, Mélenchon demonstrated that Marine Le Pen’s programme was regressive for women. Furthermore, he smashed to pieces the myth of the Front National as a party that has the working class’s best interests at heart. Le Pen appeared lost for words and ill at ease.
Mélenchon’s campaign politicises the young. He appeals to the working class, which, contrary to some claims, has largely shunned Le Pen and which has been abstaining from the vote. For the first time in decades, Mélenchon is helping the left to reconnect with the popular classes. For Mélenchon, free market politics does not work and inflicts unnecessary suffering on the people. No other European politician is better placed than he is to convincingly argue that point.

Last week, JWire reported that my book, How to Sell a Genocide: The Media’s Complicity in the Destruction of Gaza, had been “removed” from the Waverley public library in Sydney, Australia. In covering the ban, some Australian media allowed pro-Israel propagandists to casually libel me as antisemitic, a false charge that is completely divorced from the content of the book, which is nuanced and fair and takes on universal themes of human dignity and opposition to colonialism and racism.
My first instinct was to merely post on social media about the banning, noting how absurd and racist the book ban defenders’ logic was, and move on with my life. After all, my book is not the story—nor, if it were, would this be a particular interesting one. On the list of free speech suppressions and libel in the past three years over Palestine, this wouldn’t crack the top 10,000. But news of the ban was subsequently picked up by The Guardian Australia, The Independent in the UK and the largest newspaper in Australia, The Sydney Morning Herald. And given how poor the coverage of the banning has been, namely by the latter two outlets, I thought this episode could be a good object lesson in how the smearing of Palestine and its defenders operates in mainstream Anglosphere media.
The fact that you can sling around libel without evidence in the largest newspapers in Australia gives us a window into how discussion of basic Palestinian rights is shut down using the most sectarian framing possible. Let’s break down three tropes featured in the coverage of my book banning that I also detail in the book itself. Forgive me if this is meta—and a touch self-indulgent—but there’s a reason there are striking similarities, and it’s because the Israel lobby and its aggressive PR apparatus more or less use the same script for every act of smearing, censoring, and intimidation. So they’re worth taking this opportunity to unpack.
1. Feigned credulity: Taking pro-Israel crybully organizations at their word, rounding up to the most sectarian framing possible, and flattening Jewish identity and zionist ideological activity.
The Independent and Sydney Morning Herald largely embrace the pro-Israel lobby’s framing that the removal of my book was prompted entirely by, or at least largely by, a “complaint from a Bondi attack survivor.” The Independent’s Stuti Mishra would adopt this framing in its headline: “Australian library pulls book on Gaza from shelves after complaint from Bondi attack survivor,” the article announces. The Sydney Morning Herald’s Melanie Kembrey would also accept this framing at face value in her reporting, writing that, “the move follows a report by Jewish news service JWire last week that a survivor of the Bondi Beach massacre had posted on Facebook that she was distressed to see the book displayed on the new-release ‘What’s Hot’ shelf of Waverley Library.”
What’s important to emphasize here is: we have no way of knowing that this is what caused, or even sparked, the removal of the book. This is just an assertion made by those seeking to ban it. JWire reported, citing an alleged Facebook comment by the survivor in question, that her complaint is what prompted the book’s removal. But The Guardian reports that they were “unable to locate the Facebook post” in question. More importantly, both Sydney Morning Herald and The Independent seemingly contradict, or at least undermine, this simplistic narrative, by mentioning elsewhere in their articles that, as The Independent noted, the library council “has received multiple complaints about [the book].”
So was the book banned because a Bondi attack survivor complained, or was it due to the “multiple complaints”? Or was it both? If it was both, do we know which came first: the Bondi survivor complaint or the “multiple” other complaints from, presumably, unrelated parties?
The timeline is important because it suggests a fairly bog standard pro-Israel propaganda technique of front-loading censorship—and other oppressive and illiberal actions—in the most sympathetic and humane language possible. Obviously, “Pro-Israel Organizations Successfully Ban Book on Gaza” hits differently than “Library pulls book on Gaza from shelves after complaint from Bondi attack survivor.” After all, what kind of heartless monster would want to upset a Bondi attack survivor?
Alex Ryvchin, co-chief executive officer of the pro-Israel lobbying organization ECAJ, was eager to praise my book’s removal from the library, telling the Sydney Morning Herald, “A book of this sort has no place on the shelves of a library, especially one within minutes of where Australians were slaughtered in large part due to the dehumanisation of Jews precisely through this sort of libel. I commend the individual who spotted the book, herself a survivor of the massacre, and acted to have it removed.”
Was Ryvchin one of the other “multiple” parties that demanded my book be removed? If so, was it prior to the aforementioned Bondi survivor’s complaint? Did the Herald inquire about his involvement in the campaign to remove the book? Did the Herald ask him to specify examples or provide any evidence of me “dehumanizing” Jewish people, a false and libelous accusation? They did not. He is simply presented as a neutral observer with no involvement in the censorship campaign.
I sent a request for comment to the Waverley library last week, to try and pin down the timeline of the “complaints.” They replied this morning but ignored the question, instead objecting to my use of the word “ban” but not denying it was, indeed, banned.
“Contrary to some media reporting,” the library’s manager informed me via email, “the Council has not ‘banned’ the book. It remains a part of our collection; however, it is currently unable to be borrowed pending completion of a review.”
Ah, ok, it wasn’t banned, it’s just “currently unavailable to be borrowed.” Well never mind then. Hopefully this “review” goes my way! A group of organizers in Australia have started a petition calling on the library to restore the book and “protect the public’s right to read.”
But, again, it’s important to make clear that my book being “removed” from one public library isn’t the story. The story is that this is only one part of a broader censorship and bully regime that is rapidly escalating in the West. This story comes in the context of a massive crackdown on Free Speech in Australia, in particular, which is overwhelmingly targeting pro-Palestine speech and being done in the name of “combating antisemitism.” As Jacob Mchangama and Samantha Barbas noted for MSNOW in January, “what began as a moment of national mourning [in the wake of the Bondi attack] has rapidly turned into one of the most sweeping expansions of hate speech laws and protest restriction powers in the country’s modern history. Intended as an urgent response to antisemitism, new federal and state measures threaten to reach far beyond violence or direct incitement—reshaping how speech, protest and political dissent are regulated in the wake of terrorism.”
As I detail in said book, namely Chapter 8,“‘Antisemitism’ show trials and the smearing of campus protests,”framing suppression of Israel-critical speech in terms of sensitivity, anti-racism, and “fighting hate” is a textbook pro-Israel bully tactic. Using liberalism against itself is a consistent and well-documented strategy from zionist organizations to delegitimize, stigmatize, and brand as hateful those who are meaningfully critical of Israel and its regime of violence against Palestinians.
It’s useful here to distinguish the Guardian’s coverage from that of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Independent. The Guardian’s framing was mostly skeptical and fair. They sought comment from me, my publisher, and other critics of the book ban, and did not overly indulge the “Bondi survivor.” I should also note that Sydney Morning Herald’s Kembrey did reach out to me for comment, but did so at 12:41 a.m. central time and published her article a couple hours later. So alas, not being awake in the middle of the night costs me an original comment in The Herald. Though I doubt it would have mattered much in the overall credulous and uncritical orientation of the article.
The framing of the ban on my book as the ah shucks, entirely organic result of a “Bondi survivor,” without any interrogation of the source of these “multiple” other complaints, is doing 90% of the heavy lifting for the zionist censorship lobby that was eager to not only praise the decision in the pages of the Sydney Morning Herald, but frame it in purely sectarian terms. That Sydney Morning Herald and The Independent ran with the simplistic and manipulative “Bondi survivor complained” framing, without an ounce of skepticism, shows how these Israel advocacy organizations score major PR victories before the text of the article or any reporting is even done.
2. Reducing claims of genocide in Gaza to a fringe, subjective opinion by a “self described radical publisher” while omitting it is the overwhelming consensus of human rights and humanitarian organizations, as well as genocide scholars.
The reduction of mainstream opposition to Israel as an unserious or fringe position—while ignoring how widespread and obvious it is outside the corridors of beltway elite circles—is a trope I detailed in Chapter 9 of my book specially under the section, “The Atlantic And The Importance Of Policing Seriousness.” All three articles framed the fact that Israel committed genocide in Gaza as a mere opinion of mine, without noting it is the broad consensus in the humanitarian and human rights world, as well as that of scholars tasked with studying and determining such matters. While all three quoted me making this point, they did not report on the fact of this consensus. This isn’t just a vague feeling from a partisan left-wing media critic—it’s the majority academic assessment. They ought to have noted, as I detailed in my unpublished full comment to The Guardian, that genocide in Gaza is the determination of Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Doctors Without Borders, B’Tselem, Physicians for Human Rights – Israel, and the International Association of Genocide Scholars, as well as Omer Bartov, Israeli-American professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Brown University; Amos Goldberg, Israeli professor in the Department of Jewish History and Contemporary Jewry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem; Raz Segal, Israeli historian and associate professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies and endowed professor in the Study of Modern Genocide at Stockton University, among dozens of other prominent Israeli and American scholars.
Instead of mentioning any of these liberal validators, that would have shown how fringe the book ban advocates’ position is and how mainstream my headline was, it is presented as a mere claim by the book’s author and we are then served up pat denials from Israel. “Israel has repeatedly denied committing genocide in Gaza,” notes the Independent (though it does link to an article detailing UN’s claims of genocide). The Guardian writes that “Israel has repeatedly denied that it has committed genocide in Gaza” without highlighting the major humanitarian and human rights groups arguing otherwise.
The fact of Israel committing genocide in Gaza is overwhelming consensus among those tasked with documenting and determining such matters. Presenting this objective reality as my opinion, without citing the underlying evidence supporting it, is playing into the idea the “genocide” label is a fringe or emotionally charged label when it is anything but.
3. Casually conflating Palestine solidarity with antisemitism and ISIS-inspired violence.
The whole point of focusing on the Bondi survivor complainant is, of course, to conflate solidarity with Palestine with the Bondi attack, which was an ISIS-inspired massacre last December that killed 15 Australians (14 of whom were Jewish) and had absolutely zero to do with Palestine, Palestinians, or Gaza. Indeed, the only major player in Palestine with significant links to ISIS is Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who Israeli outlet Haaretz reported last year has been arming ISIS-linked gangs in Gaza to undermine Hamas and steal aid, a fact publicly confirmed by Netanyahu’s former Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman.
Despite it having no factual basis, conflation of Palestinian militants, civil society and advocacy with “ISIS,” as I note in Chapter 1 of my book, “‘40 beheaded babies,’ the ISIS-ification of Hamas, and how to prime the American public for revenge,” was crucial to propagandizing Western audiences and using the blunt instrument of Islamophobia to build sympathy for the cause of open-ended Israeli violence.
None of the above outlets felt it necessary to note that there has been no proven link between the Bondi Attack and Palestine solidarity. The Australian government has spent millions attempting to find such a connection, but alas has come up empty. Why should pro-Israel advocates be permitted to casually make such a conflation without any reporters noting these two things are wholly unrelated? Why is this conflation of ISIS and Palestine solidarity permitted to be repeated without any attempt to correct this misconception? Perceptions on the part of a handful of motivated actors is not sufficient reason to indulge their delusions. Nevertheless, racist conspiracy theories conflating Gaza advocacy with violence inspired by a movement and cause that has zero to do with Palestinians, and is largely backed by Israel’s regional allies, is permitted without any pushback because these two things, in the Western, orientalist mind, feel vaguely related.
These are subtle interventions by the above outlets and, as I mention, far from the biggest crimes in Western media related to Palestine. I am not a free speech martyr, as some have alleged, nor do I seek to be. But I think it is useful to note how, when reporting on the banning of a book about media propaganda, we saw at least three of the very tropes detailed in the book being banned. These subtle framings, while seemingly minor in isolation, add up. They go, before one even notices, from lazy tropes, credulous reporting, and racist assumptions to a narrative, a story. Just like that, the banning of a perfectly sober, rigorous, and nuanced book is framed as a small act of kindness for a terrorism victim. And the author, who went out of his way to be nonsectarian, to examine universal humanitarian themes, and to highlight Jewish anti-zionist activism, is accused of horrific dehumanization in Sydney’s largest newspaper without any pushback or deeper reporting. The overt suppression of free speech in Australia is another major escalation, and embracing this grimy, misleading, and libelous framing without much thought or skepticism—as The Independent and Sydney Morning Herald did—is yet another example of Western media’s role in selling genocide.

To be sure, it would be difficult to top the just-surfaced account of February’s chickenhawk parade involving the Air Force One plane-switching in Ankara after a NATO meeting.
It was unparalleled for its sheer me-first Trumpean disrespect for the poor bastards who are forced to travel with the president and endure the vicious prattle of America’s top golf cheater. When Trump’s Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt resigned several days later, possibly connected to her being set up by the president as one of the victims of a possible terrorist attack, Trump posted on his Truth Social site a picture of himself with the caption “The Best Press Secretary.” He was putting down Leavitt with an insult and nominating himself!
Donald Trump is always on the move when he is not hitting golf balls or sleeping during meetings, with threats and swearing to terrify his enemies both home and abroad.
Observe how Trump worked out some kind of deal employing his Board of Peace over Gaza, with Hamas agreeing to disarm in exchange for an Israeli army subsequent withdrawal from the 7 percent of the territory that it is occupying to be replaced by an international peacekeeping force. Hamas agreed to the plan so Trump sent his Zionist son-in-law Jared Kushner to Israel to speak with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and seal the deal.

Netanyahu inevitably said “No” to the arrangement and Kushner immediately agreed to support Israel no matter what it does. What it does Jared, is kill Palestinians every single day after stealing their land and destroying their livelihoods.

On the domestic side of what passes for White House activity, this past week has also incorporated its own distinctive Trumpean charm, which might be called the name game. Trump slapped his name back up onto the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and it was learned that his name is now up on the building twice to make sure that no one misses it. He also closed the building for what he describes as “renovations” so no one gets to enjoy it. And Dulles International Airport in nearby Virginia is also due for a huge renovation, and quite possibly there will be a renaming for that!
But a better name game involved the U.S. Navy, where an aircraft carrier is under construction that has not yet been given an official name. There is speculation that it might be named after a Black sailor named Doris Miller who was at Pearl Harbor where he manned an anti-aircraft cannon shooting at attacking Japanese planes.

Word is that Donald Trump wants to name the ship, which will not be completed until 2034, after himself, presumably so it can someday join the flotilla of Trump-class battleships that are now being constructed with a $275 billion price tag. One does not want to be a worry-wart, but most navies in the world no longer have battleships or even aircraft carriers because they are extremely expensive to operate yet vulnerable to the type of ballistic and cruise missile warfare that now prevails both on land and sea.
Regarding her aircraft carrier, a commenter on Facebookobserved how “Both are poor choices. Traditionally, carriers were named after noble concepts (Independence, Enterprise, etc.), then after political figures associated with military service (Nimitz, Dwight D Eisenhower, John F Kennedy), then with other Presidents or politicians who were either folk heroes or got money for the military (George Washington, John C Stennis).
Naming a carrier after a guy who was the ‘first Black to get the Navy Cross’ is political overkill; usually such a man has a Destroyer or other smaller ship named after him. After mentioning Israel’s genocide numerous times in other content regarding Christian theocrats, Peter Thiel’s puppets, or figures like Avi Loeb, many people have asked me to just go ahead and make a long-form video about my views on Israel. I had avoided this since I’m a science communicator and prefer not to make exclusively political content, but after a twerp named Destiny took it upon himself to call me a Nazi, I had an excuse to do it. So here it is. Israel is objectively committing genocide, Zionism is the vile ideology behind it, and here is everything you need to hear to understand exactly what Israel is and why they are an existential threat to all of humanity.
Here was the vital link between Roosevelt’s rejection of any trace of relief and his prioritization of budget balancing. Social Security had to be “self-financing,” i.e. paid for by the co-parties of the work relation, employee and employer. Each would pay, out of her income, a tax which would be placed into a fund from which the worker would draw upon her retirement. No demands would be made on the Treasury.
Roosevelt wanted to design Social Security in such a way as “to preserve the system of private enterprise for profit…[and] compete as little as possible with private enterprises.” The program was to deliver what the market by itself could not, yet at the same time should embody to as great an extent as possible the principles of capitalism. To Roosevelt, this meant that a plan for social insurance must conform as closely as possible to the existing system of private insurance; it must reflect actuarial principles. A capitalist conceptual framework models the provision of public benefit such that the individual is prior to the social, the private prior to the public. Social Security was made to inhabit and accommodate itself to the space within which private profit is made.
Roosevelt’s conception of Social Security required, then, an economic counterpart to the private individual insurance premium. This was to be the payroll tax, a deduction from the wage. Roosevelt held to this conceit well before he was elected, and he reiterated the same commitment years after the Social Security Act was passed. As early as 1930 he declared that any benefits accorded to workers through legislation should “be a result of their own efforts and foresightedness” so that they would “be receiving not charity, but the natural profits (sic) of their years of labor and insurance.” In 1934 he instructed Congress that the program’s funds “should be raised by contribution rather than by general taxation.” In his first meeting with the drafters of the legislation, he reiterated that old age insurance “must be self-supporting, without subsidies from general tax sources.” Shortly thereafter he told an assemblage of experts on social insurance programs that Social Security “must not be allowed to become a dole through the mingling of insurance and relief….[and] must be financed by contributions, not taxes.” In response to strong objections from Rexford Tugwell, one of his most articulate underconsumptionist advisors, the president emphasized that he was “inclined toward a wholly contributory scheme with the government not participating.” Two years after SSA was passed, Roosevelt reiterated his basic conception of social insurance, and its grounds: “[A]s regards social insurance of all kinds, if I have anything to say about it, it will always be contributed, both on the part of the employer and the employee, on a sound actuarial basis. It means no money out of the Treasury.” (7)
Not only did the contributory scheme mean no money out of the Treasury, it could also become a cash cow for Treasury. Roosevelt and his fiscally conservative Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau were in accord that the contributory system had the double economic advantage of linking social benefits to work and ameliorating some of government’s financial problems. Morgenthau anticipated that Social Security taxes could be lent to the Treasury to finance New Deal deficits (much as Lyndon Johnson in 1967 concealed deficits by creating the “unified budget,” counting Social Security surpluses as part of the government’s general operating budget), reducing government’s borrowing needs. Funding Social Security out of general revenues would not have permitted this gambit.

Earlier today, I came across an astute Israeli commentator who pointed out that Israeli policy is guided by a 9-to-1 aggression-to-diplomacy ratio. The Jewish state is engaged in an endless war against everything and everyone around it, and beyond. It kills en mass, it flattens, it assassinates leaders, journalists, intellectuals, it invests in havoc, and it dismantles the prospect of any future dialogue, let alone reconciliation. In comparison, Iran’s violence-to-diplomacy ratio stands at 1 to 9 in favour of diplomacy. Iran refrains from using its military power, and when it does, it is always measured. Iran will instead invest 90% of its energy in diplomacy. Iran will talk to its neighbours; it will only use its military as a ‘continuation of politics by other means.’
In light of the above, the astute Israeli equated the Jewish State to a psychotic, violent kid with a catastrophic speech impediment. We are basically dealing with an unbearable infant, consumed by constant tantrums that has been kicked out of every possible care system—a reckless young human infant growing into a pathological misanthropic character.
Bizarrely enough, the way in which the so-called ‘Only Democracy’ of its own kind chooses to behave is hardly a coincidence or an outcome of specific political circumstances.
This misanthropic reality is the real meaning of Jewish ‘homecoming.’ It is consistent with the Biblical homecoming narrative. It fits nicely with Jewish history, scriptures, theology and spirit. Here (and shown below) is a video of Fox’s Sean Hannity being able to make a DSA-supported Congressional candidate seem tongue-tied and stupid by taking advantage of the fact that the DSA does not advocate the egalitarian principle, “From each according to reasonable ability, to each according to need or reasonable desire with scarce things equitably rationed according to need.” At the very end, Hannity attacks “From each according to ability, to each according to need” as if this were what the DSA advocates (it does not) by saying that it is Marxism. The DSA politician apparently does not know that Karl Marx explicitly (and wrongly!) OPPOSED implementing “From each according…etc.” until, to use his words, “a higher phase of communist society” (which in the Marxist framework comes after the socialist phase), i.e. until the VERY FAR future.
All of Hannity’s gotcha “How much money should a person be allowed to have?” questions are IRRELEVANT and would be easily shown to be irrelevant if he were confronting an advocate of “From each according to reasonable ability, to each according to need or reasonable desire with scarce things equitably rationed according to need,” because this economic principle is not based on using money at all. But there is no such thing as capitalism in the singular. There are many capitalisms. The capitalism of 1880s America — child labor, company towns, no weekends — was capitalism. The capitalism of 1955 America — 35% union density, 91% top marginal tax rates, the GI Bill building the largest middle class in human history, GDP growth rates double what they are today — was also capitalism. Denmark is capitalist. Singapore is capitalist. The neoliberal version we have run in America since roughly 1975, delivering four decades of stagnant wages for most workers while routing nearly all productivity gains to the top, is also capitalism.
These systems produce radically different outcomes — in wages, mobility, life expectancy, civic trust, democratic stability. The question is never “capitalism, yes or no.” The only question that has ever mattered is: which capitalism, designed how, for whose benefit?
The seeds of neoliberal economic policy were planted during the founding years of twentieth-century liberalism. The Democrats’ current embrace of fiscal conservatism is claimed by contemporary self-proclaimed New Dealers to be a repudiation of the founding bequest, a capitulation to reactionary Republican dogma. Budget deficits, we are told, were legitimated by Franklin D. Roosevelt during the New Deal as a legacy to future Democratic regimes. The political obligation to enhance social welfare is supposed to have trumped the old-time Hooverian taboo against government expenditures beyond government receipts.
Objections to this policy are thought to have been refuted not merely by Keynesian economic theory but mainly by successful practice: once Roosevelt put into place large-scale deficit-funded projects like the Works Progress Administration, the economy was launched into its steepest cyclical expansion to this day, from 1933 to 1937. Reagan’s tirades against budget deficits are said to be a throwback to pre-Rooseveltian times and outdated orthodoxy. Imagine the chagrin of “the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party” when Clinton and Obama betrayed the heritage of the New Deal by seconding the Republican commitment to fiscal orthodoxy. The rustling sound you are supposed to hear is FDR tossing in his grave.
This story is the most recent supplement to the myth of the Democratic Party as the “Party of the working man.” It fails to recognize that fiscal orthodoxy and the correlative tethering of social benefit to work and wage level was central to Franklin Roosevelt’s political values and bequeathed to postwar American liberalism a distinctly conservative, anti-social-democratic thrust.
Roosevelt’s 1935 State of the Union Address announced to the nation the introduction of two landmark programs, the Social Security Act and the “new and greatly enlarged plan” for “emergency public works,” the Works Progress Administration (WPA). In the same speech, the president revealed his disdain for “relief,” social assistance available to all in need irrespective of their ability to work.

Present times call for exactly the policy recommended in vain by Roosevelt’s Left advisors. Obama’s response could have been penned by Roosevelt himself. At the December 3, 2009 “jobs summit,” he repeated a favorite refrain: “I want to be clear: While I believe the government has a critical role in creating the conditions for economic growth, ultimately true economic recovery is only going to come from the private sector.” In September 2010 he flat-out dismissed government creation of jobs: “I’ve never believed that government’s role is to create jobs or prosperity…I believe it’s the private sector that must be the main engine of our recovery.” With outsourcing and technological labor-displacement proceeding apace while the captains of industry and finance reap historic profits in a stagnant economy, the current neoliberal settlement portends permanent unemployment. The rustling sound you now hear is Keynes tossing in his grave.

Aristocrats like Roosevelt disparaged relief as encouraging public expectations of government provision of social benefits, and as an alternative to workers’ dependence on the employer to make a living. Roosevelt displayed unabashedly the disdain for relief characteristic of his class. In the 1935 Address, he declared that
“[D]ependence upon relief induces a spiritual disintegration fundamentally destructive of the national fiber. To dole out relief in this way is to administer a narcotic, a subtle destroyer of the human spirit. It is inimical to the dictates of a sound policy. It is in violation of the traditions of America. Work must be found for able-bodied but destitute workers. The federal government must and shall quit this business of relief.”
Roosevelt echoed the class-rhetorical trope that relief independent of work corrodes the alleged human need to labor in exchange for material benefits. Note the dire implications of this conception of government assistance for unemployment policy, implications not limited to the 1930s but transmitted over time to the political tradition that defines itself by reference to the New Deal. Under the kind of social pressure that prompted Great Society legislation, the Democratic Party either maintained or extended unemployment benefits to those unable to find work. But the distinction between the legitimate entitlement authorizing WPA, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, and “relief,” lived on. After the war, “relief” became “welfare” or “handouts.” The typical example was Aid to Families With Dependent Children (AFDC). Social pressure withered, and the Democrats assumed the default position, with Clinton doing away with “welfare as we know it” (AFDC) and Obama refusing to lift a finger in strong support of higher benefits for everyone who is unemployed, for as long as they are unemployed. Extending benefits for the long-term unemployed was up for debate, not a foregone conclusion.
The same passage reveals an equally fundamental rationale for the rejection of public assistance, that it is inconsistent with “sound [fiscal] policy.” “Sound finance” was the equivalent of today’s “fiscal responsibility,” the verbal logo of what Keynes sneeringly called “the Treasury view” that balanced budgets are a sine qua non of capitalist economic health. Roosevelt’s obsession with budget balancing and its correlative rejection of public relief explain the basic contours of his preferred but unpopular plan for funding Social Security.

In this saga, we have a Jesus Christ figure—a young Black academic star spreading affection, insisting we should once again learn to love our neighbours (watch the video on 1st comment). He was raised on a London council estate and had a troubled childhood, but he overcame all of that and became the pride of his generation. We also have a modern-day monstrous Caiaphas figure, Nathan Cofnas, who is demanding the exclusion of the new Black Jesus star. Then we have the entire British media—from the Daily Tel Aviv to the Guardian of Judea—doing Pontius Pilate’s job, nailing Arday to the cross on behalf of the establishment. Eventually Arday surrenders; he faces his fate, but his death doesn’t mute his plight. Quite the opposite.
And here comes the juiciest bit: the miracle. We have learned about Jason Arday’s ‘fantasy lies’. We are told that he is a compulsive liar, that everything he says about himself is a complete invention. We are told he invented stories about running 30 marathons in 35 days. Yet some people actually believe this to be true. This is exactly how a theological moment materialises.
Belief becomes a meaningful event with the acceptance of the counterfactual. For the Jews, the counterfactual moment of revelation is the Burning Bush. Arday, on his part, ran 30 marathons with a broken leg, and Jesus Christ walked on water. Belief in the counterfactual is more epistemologically significant than knowing. To believe means to accept despite what facts, observation, or reason suggest otherwise.
If I am correct, the Arday affair is just another significant sign of a society in deep crisis—an identity crisis similar to the one that brought about Jesus Christ. I am talking about a society that has gradually removed itself from the human experience (affection, love, empathy) and surrendered to obsessive greed, Jerusalemite litigation frenzy and tyranny of correctness.
If this is indeed the case, we will have, sooner or later, to choose which side we are on: Jesus–Arday, Caiaphas–Cofnas, or Pontius Telegraph Pilate. For my part, I chose Jesus long ago and will keep up with Arday, for that matter. Not because I care about his academic integrity or DEI, with which I am troubled—but I am with Arday’s call for global affection, humane brotherhood, and I also believe in the miracle as a humane emblem of hope for a change.
They bear the mobilizing passions of fascism: the manufacture of enemies, the celebration of cruelty, the contempt for vulnerability, the racial sorting of human beings, the militarization of knowledge, and the elevation of violence into a governing principle. In such a world, what happened to Jason Arday cannot be reduced to a private tragedy or explained solely through the circumstances of an individual life. His death points to something larger and more disturbing. It forces us to confront a social order that increasingly trades in disposability, human suffering, war, and cruelty, and then treats the casualties it produces as if they were merely private misfortunes. — August 17, 2026, Jason Arday and the Machinery of Cruelty, Henry Giroux
