- Hormozgan: A U.S. attack hit a wedding in Sirik on Tuesday, killing at least four people, including a child, and injuring nearly 100 people, 51 of whom were hospitalized, according to Iran’s Health Ministry. Separate U.S. strikes hit a fishing pier and a port authority tower in the city. The U.S. also struck the major southern port city of Bandar Abbas, the city of Jask, and a residential area in the coastal city of Kuhestak. Several parts of the power grid in Hormozgan were also targeted.
- Kermanshah: The U.S. killed four Iranian military personnel in an overnight attack on the western province of Kermanshah, according to a statement from Iran’s military.
- Sistan and Baluchestan: The U.S. struck the port city of Chabahar several times on Tuesday, and hit the nearby city of Konarak as well.
- Khuzestan: A U.S. missile struck the outskirts of the Iranian city of Ahvaz, in the country’s western Khuzestan province, Iran’s Fars news agency reported, and later strikes hit at least two other locations. Tuesday strikes killed at least seven and injured eight others in the province.
- Kerman: The U.S. also targeted an airport in the city of Jirfot, in Iran’s southeast, Iranian broadcaster IRIB reported, though the attack entailed no casualties and minimal damage to the airport’s infrastructure.
- Bushehr: Explosions were also heard in the gas hub of Asaluyeh.
- Markazi: Iranian forces shot down a U.S. MQ-9 drone over Khomeyn, in central Iran on Tuesday, Tasnim reported.

The UK is the only EU country to permit 16-year-olds to enlist and start military training. According to Child Soldiers International (CSI), only 17 other countries allow it, including Zambia, El Salvador and Iran. In June, the UN committee on the rights of the child told the UK government to “reconsider its active policy of recruitment of children into the armed forces and ensure that recruitment practices do not actively target persons under the age of 18 and ensure that military recruiters’ access to schools be strictly limited”.

Arnold attended a boarding school with military traditions in the early 1970s.
He was sexually abused, as were many other boys, and says that this was made to seem like a ‘normal induction’ at the school.
Arnold’s parents lived overseas and he was sent to boarding school when he was 11 years old. He didn’t want to go and was homesick from the start. This feeling was made worse by the ‘brutal and intimidating’ atmosphere at the school that he likens to the dystopian novel ‘Lord of the Flies’.
He describes how prefects and older boys systematically abused some of the younger ones, sexually, physically and psychologically. The bigger boys would target any young ones who had a ‘slight flaw’, such as wearing glasses, being overweight or having a speech impediment.
Arnold says he was picked on because he was small. In his first term, he was summoned to the room of a prefect, where he and another boy were stripped naked and one was made to perform oral sex on the other. Arnold remembers how humiliated he felt. ‘It was dehumanising’ he says.
The abuse continued for two years, until the prefect left school and Arnold was ‘set free’. He explains that the abuse was so widespread it was made to seem like ‘normal induction’ into the school, and it was expected that students would do it to others when they reached the sixth form.
He adds that the abusive behaviour was ‘common knowledge’ around the school and there were some teachers and priests who were known to hold ‘special lessons’ where they abused children. He describes how boys would be summoned to certain members of staff ‘and then be quiet when they came back’.
Arnold says he believes that the teachers were motivated by ‘a perverse power trip’ rather than homosexuality. In fact, he says, ‘Some boys were expelled for homosexual activity. But abuse, they chose not to be aware of’.
No one talked about the abuse that was going on at the school, and Arnold says there was no approachable person in authority who he could have talked to. Plus, he says, ‘It was beaten into the pupils from the first day that you do not talk to anybody’. He would not have told his parents about the abuse because he felt ‘it would be letting them down’, which would have added to his shame.
After Arnold left the school, he says he suppressed memories of the abuse, and ‘changed the story to it being a rite of passage’. But in recent years, he realised that he had been raped and he had a nervous breakdown. He sometimes feels suicidal, and ‘not wanting to exist in any way, shape or form’. He suffers with anxiety, has abused alcohol and drugs, and has problems with trust and relationships.
Arnold believes a culture change in boarding schools is needed – ‘one in which people are not strong and silent, but strong and verbal’. He says schools need to actively look out for signs of abuse and should provide an independent person children can talk to. He is not sure that ‘empathy can be taught’ but suggests this should be explored.
He has had therapy, and spoken to a friend, his wife and mother about the abuse he suffered. He says his mother told him she suspected he had been abused, and that although she knows ‘she can’t fix it’, it is helpful talking to her.
Dreadful abuse went unchecked at military boarding school
Lady Smith, Chair of the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry, has today (22 October) published her thirteenth volume of findings relating to the provision of residential care for children at Queen Victoria School (QVS), a boarding school in Dunblane.
She concludes that pupils were subjected to ‘dreadful abuse’, and that numerous abusive practices perpetrated by members of staff and pupils went unchecked.
QVS apologised for abuse experienced by children who had been entrusted into its care.
The current management of QVS, HM Commissioners, and the Ministry of Defence (MOD) now also understand that there is no room for complacency given the abuse that has taken place since 2010 despite the child protection systems and policies that were put in place.
Lady Smith said: ‘The pupils at QVS were all boarders and they were exposed to risks of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. For many of them, those risks materialised and children suffered abuse.

The grip of that code still seemed strong in Sydney, where the Bondi Yeshivah was grappling with its parallel scandal: the failure to act on old allegations about the activities of Gug Hayman and a rabbinical student known at the commission as AVL.
One of Hayman’s many friends was the Sydney rabbi Yosef Feldman, son of Pinchus, the chief rabbi at Bondi, and Pnina, sister of both the legendary diamond explorer Joe Gutnick and one of the heroes of this story, Rabbi Moshe Gutnick.
Rabbi Yosef Feldman: ‘This was very wrong of me.’
Yosef emailed colleagues:
“I really don’t understand why as soon as something of serious loshen horah is heard about someone of even child molestation, we should immediately go to the secular authorities.”
When those emails were leaked to the Australian Jewish News, Feldman issued a statement that he did, indeed, support the official ruling that abuse must be reported to the police, and then stepped down as president of the Rabbinical Council of New South Wales.
He was furious with the paper. After meeting executives of the Jewish News, Feldman emailed a number of fellow rabbis to explain why the public attention being given to the troubles in Chabad caused him such disquiet: “I felt that the hype has been causing phoney attention seekers to come forward like Manny Waks and this should be stopped.”
