We might not get to experience the fun and philosophy of mythical hobbits wandering through Seattle’s Beacon Hill Food Forest, but it isn’t beyond the realm of possibilities to see exotic produce from Southeast Asia, the Philippines, Somalia, and Central and South America growing just 2.5 miles from downtown Seattle.
Even more rare for the Beacon Hill Food Forest is that it involves public land – Jefferson Park – and strong support from a heavy hitter: Seattle Public Utilities. The 7-acre Food Forest has become much more than a community garden – what makes it different is a philosophy of permanence through permaculture, a food-growing system tied to strong ecological elements, such as creating food for pollinators like bees and hummingbirds, which is as important as growing native foods and herbs for people.
“This is new for SPU’s properties,” said Christina Olson, a lifelong resident of Beacon Hill and voice in the community group known as Friends of Beacon Food Forest. Olson, whose grandparents lived on Beacon Hill, is effusive about the fact that the P-Patch Program, Department of Neighborhoods, and City Council President Richard Conlin have put so much effort behind this project and the urban gardening movement.
The Beacon Food Forest is not about creating a park-like setting, nor is the design looking for traditional community garden overlays. It’s about bringing back trees, improving soil, and enhancing water. “We’ll keep some areas tidy,” said Glenn Herlihy, a 48-year-old garden designer, sculptor, and 16-year resident of Beacon Hill, who was one of three students in a 2009 permaculture class that had a stake in the Food Forest plan.
That’s the Inner Zone, where gardening needs are met. Then comes Zone 2, which is wilder, with berries and bee hives. Zone 3 is a web of fruit- and nut-bearing trees, the orchard. Zones 4 and 5 are wild areas, where native plant growing, harvesting, and wild crafting will take place.
The goal is centered around people with few economic means learning gardening, food storage, seed saving, and the holistic web of growing their own communities through food. The idea for transforming this park into a community-inspired, community-driven collective gardening arena came from a design class taken two years ago by Herlihy.
“We picked Jefferson Park and came up with a design to pass the class,” he said.
He also was involved in the Jefferson Park Alliance and Beacon Mountain Playground project. With the umbrella oversight of the Seattle P-Patch Program and Department of Neighborhoods, the Beacon Food Forest landed a $22,000 city grant to hire a consultant and pay for outreach and conceptual designs.
The June 7, 2011, meeting was attended by 60 people. The second meeting, a month later, garnered 70 people. Olson said mailings were sent to 7,000 households in five languages prior to the first meeting, including Somali, Mandarin, Vietnamese, and Spanish.
The key to community gardening in a Food Forest, based on permaculture design elements, is neighborhood “buy-in,” with individuals and groups actively engaged in design oversight, management, and participation. Along with support and interest from individual residents, Olson and Herlihy said Mercer Middle School and Cleveland High School are interested in outdoor, experiential learning projects and community service learning classes at the Food Forest site, and Olson mentioned the Veterans Administration has been contacted to see if VA Hospital outpatient members with PTSD and other challenges might connect with gardening as a possible rehabilitation.
Jefferson Park was the City of Seattle’s reservoir and cemetery in 1898. It also housed the stockade, park nursery, and greenhouse. It was named in 1908 to honor Thomas Jefferson. The Olmsted Brothers designed the 18-hole golf course, which has been open since 1915. While the permaculture concept is thousands of years old, it takes education and practice to get the average modern gardener to approve.
“This project is still about food and nutrition,” Herlihy said. “There are a lot of hungry and out-of-work folk on Beacon Hill. Think of this as low-cost organic gardening.”
While the aesthetic of wild gardening will require education, signage, and workshops — part of the grant’s requirement — the bottom line is that organizations and community groups, like Seattle’s El Centro de la Raza, will take the lead in getting produce to food banks. With the City of Seattle already working on a Food Policy Action Plan and recently passing a Local Food Action Initiative, Beacon Food Forest was on the right track with a September 2011 meeting to show the community the Harrison Design Team’s plan for the food forest, after robust and impassioned input at previous meetings.
With 2010 proclaimed as Seattle’s Year of Urban Agriculture, Herlihy and Olson were confident the next phase involving over $100,000 in grants would carry forth. That money has been secured. They both see in two years a viable forest thriving on Beacon Hill. The dream of that enchanted forest entails $300,000 to $500,000, full city support in poor economic times, and the will and food growing knowledge, skills and labor from this neighborhood, one Olson characterizes as always changing demographically but one that is seated in hard work.
“What determines the size of the food forest is how many people will commit,” Glenn Herlihy said. For Olson, who worked for the Washington Department of Transportation, that won’t be difficult:
“There are no slackers living on Beacon Hill.” She has seen more and more immigrant neighbors move here, and she’s a proponent of diversity, both in the areas of race, culture, and traditions and biodiversity.
If Hobbits like mushrooms, then expect a whole variety of them in those wild zones when Beacon Hill Forest takes off. The volunteers and paid staff with Seattle P-Patch (BFF is a Seattle P-Patch) are now in negotiations with government agencies to find the correct connection point to city water.
The soil’s there, but water is key. The labor is also there: The BFF has many supporters in Seattle, especially Beacon Hill, and an up-and-coming old neighborhood that is new.
Then, “final drawings for construction will be delivered to the Conservation Corps, who will be doing the construction beginning, we hope, later this month (October),” Herlihy said.
And the good Americans say, “watch your mouth, watch your tone, watch your attitude, and you just need to pick up, pack up, and find a place that will hire you!!!!!!!!!”
At-will Employment with those Short-term Rental Monoliths

You may recall the animus:
Unleashed dog(s), dog poop, people unloading boxes of food, children, and bags. Clicking their car alarms, on and off, on and off. Then they use adjacent driveways: loading unused boxes of food, leaving trash to blow around, more dog poop, and loud parties.
“Bayshore Board and Committees ignore this and these situations of STRs. None will approach to fix, they ignore it as Full Time Residents deal with vulgar mouth STR transient tenants – disrespecting other people’s private property.”
Ahh, that’s Facebook, man, and alas, I just got sacked by one of those evil vacation home STRs, not for doing anything badly, but ironically, because a Bayshore Karen supposedly took a video of me making a California stop – rolling stop – at a stop sign.
I got zero recourse from the multimillionaires who own the STR outfit. There were no moving violations, and no second chance for me to, well, slow my roll and stop at stop signs.
This is a tale again of the haves and haves-not – and at $17 an hour, delivering clean laundry and supplies all over the county and picking up dirty towels and laundry, bags that can weigh eighty pounds, well, it is a mad dash to get to the rentals – dozens of them – before check in.
Most readers are Baby Boomers, and as many have noted, Newport and Waldport are like Sun City West, where retirement means entitlement.
Now, think of the optics – I was fired on hearsay, and if the video exists, it’s not evidence enough to have me sacked. But rich people breathe from a different atmosphere than the rest of us.
Mostly Mexican housekeepers rush to clean up the rentals, from bottom to top, with white-glove inspections required. It’s an endless battle with sand, dirty renters, and canine guests.
Three two- and three-story vacation homes in a day. Some of the Latinos have a hubby and a sister or daughter working the shift so they can “make bank” and get three done in a day.
And what a racket. Many of the homes have rickety, cracked wood stairs. Storm doors are unlatched. Basements are where linens and supplies sometimes go, and I have come across spider-infested ones, and I know my brown recluse and wolf spiders by sight.
Homes that are in disrepair, and many places I have been to have rat and mice traps set up all over the place, out of sight from guests, who pay, gulp, from $112 to over $600 per night, with larger beachfront properties pushing $1,000+. A cleaning fee is added on.
The Oregon coast short-term rental fight entered a new chapter three years ago with a state ruling by the Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals overturning a citizen-approved ballot measure phasing out vacation rentals in unincorporated Lincoln County.
Remember? 15neighborhoods was the coalition of citizens who got more than 10,000 Lincoln County residents to vote to phase out STRs.
STRs create jobs, though, as this most recent bitter experience was ramified to me, a union organizer going way back. At $17 an hour, one laundry driver comes from Depoe Bay to Waldport to start her shift. Another worker lived in an RV and was forced to leave the county when rental slips doubled.
Oh, the tales from workers, including one woman who is a student and lives in a van, who was sacked because of her “poor tone.” Bad attitude is another way of putting it. This multimillion-dollar family-owned outfit has no second or third chances in its blood.
The outfit doesn’t just manage other people’s homes. They have purchased many properties, including single-family homes, condos, and other housing configurations.
Now, sure, I despise the person who turned me in with a supposed phone or Ring camera video. But others in this outfit – workers – have told me of their own travails with the rich company owners and their HR staff.
Back to the spiders. I studied arachnids in Arizona and then in Vietnam. Alas, brown recluse spiders, like most others, don’t go after humans, but they nest, and when someone rubs up against them, say in bed, the short fangs come out, and the venom is injected. Grabbing stored items—such as boxes in the attic, garden tools, or old gloves—where the spider has made a retreat.
Short-term rental cleaners are always grabbing things out of these spider-infested locations. One cleaner told me she got bit at one of the houses, and she went to the ER, and $1000 later, after they abraded the wound and drained it, and left a course of expensive antibiotics.
She failed to file a workman’s comp claim, received no assistance from her supervisor, and, alas, the millionaire owners allegedly told her she couldn’t prove she was bitten at one of their rentals, so no compensation for her ER and doctor’s bill.
Ahh, the stone hearts of small business owners.
I respectively wrote to both the husband and wife, asking for a second chance, a PIP (personal improvement plan). I got a boilerplate response back from the man. And this is a fellow who is fixing up a small conglomerate of single units. I met his construction honcho, a nice Spanish-speaking guy from out of state. I doubt he has an Oregon contractor’s license, yet he’s doing wiring, plumbing, and construction work for the owner.
Yeah, brown recluse spider bites can take a person down quickly, and while their venom is complex and can cause serious local tissue damage (necrosis), most bites like the one I got in Phoenix heal on their own. Complications occur with those with compromised immune systems, which currently is a hefty thirty percent of Americans.
No ER visit bill taken care of by the millionaires. Automatic terminations with no recourse. Constant recrimination if a floor has a bit of sand left on it. Chiding if the towels aren’t folded the right way.
Capitalism is vicious, and while people should reject this transactional, bloody economic system, we see none of that in our little town of Waldport’s SRT outfits.

Todd and Kate are the owners of Sweet Homes Vacation Getaways. After meeting online from two different cities, they had their first date here at the beach in 2007, fell in love, and soon after, bought their beach house, The Sand Castle. (It’s a good story – be sure to ask them about it when you meet them!) After renting their home through another local company for almost a year, they realized that it was often unoccupied and wasn’t bringing in nearly the income that they had anticipated. Kate may be an East coaster by birth, but she’s a West coaster by choice. With a Ph.D. in Sociology, Kate is a professor and Dean at a major university and she has extensive operations, HR, and management experience.

Dear Todd and Kate Korgan:
I have never spoken to you, though I briefly met Todd at the Waldport Warehouse with no interaction. I have been a driver for a short time with Sweet Homes, starting 4/14/2026.
I was informed yesterday, June 8, that there were “three complaints about my driving.” I understand the nature of complaints and that Sweet Homes has a bottom line to follow, liabilities, etc. Now, today, June 9, I was terminated by Casey, as she said, because a video of my driving a Sweet Homes van running a stop sign was sent to her.
My bad, for sure, but I have a spotless driving record. The point of my writing to you is to plead my case for, well, to get some sort of mea culpa moment in person to explain that rushed behavior. I am easily taught to slow my roll, and I believe the nature of this termination is, well, unprofessional too, since I had to contact the Sweet Homes Telegram chat to see why I was not on today’s schedule.
Again, if I ran that stop sign per the person’s personal video that was sent to Sweet Homes, then my apologies are in order. I have been rushing much of the time, driving with Sweet Homes, following the hard deadlines of 5 pm for check-ins, sometimes with even earlier check-ins. I think I am fully adult enough to be warned and to adjust my driving. I have been a professional teacher, writer, journalist, case manager, and diver. I have not had a delivery job, though I did Meals on Wheels as a volunteer position, and that was not a job that required super rushing to each household.
So, there is no recourse here? I am a good employee, live in Waldport, and am always ready to throw in to help out. I believe some sort of PIP would be in order, and again, I do not break traffic laws throughout the day. I rushed over at Bay Shore, but to repeat, I CAN be admonished and retrained to slow my roll.
I know you have so many other duties as not have ’t have to worry about a $17 an hour employee, but I am reaching out to see if there is any chance of reconsidering this decision. I taught English composition and literature for decades at many colleges in several states. I appreciate the ability to give second chances to students. As a sociology professor, Kate, I hope you too have that in your heart and your willpower to give me a second chance.

Jesus fucking Christ, the same old spiel, and my response?
Well, Todd, it is indeed a real gem of a CYA piece of PR you’ve composed, though it sure is boilerplate.
To repeat what has already been repeated about Sweet Homes taking safety and driving seriously, oh, enough of that. However, common sense would posit that, a, it was a private citizen that reported this to Sweet Homes, and, b, there is no way she would know my name, and, c, how would she know what SH’s policy is about second chances, PIPs or what have you, and, d, how can this rise to the level of contacting your insurance carrier when there is no moving violation involved?
The measure of a company and its founders is, or should be, on how they treat their employees, not just the bottom line of profits and so-called appearances within a community. Indeed, if it was a resident of Bay Shore, a very proscribed and demographically odd community, that also needs addressing. In fact, part of the SH training I received included two trainers specifically saying that Bay Shore “is full of people who have lodged complaints to Sweet Homes about every manner of things, including our driving.”
Nah, I will not accept your rationale, and alas, the bitter taste in my mouth is pretty deep down. This is sort of foolish expounding of rhetorical mumbo jumbo and decrying me persona non grata for SW is indeed chutzpah; when as an employee, I have witnessed faulty stairs, rickety stairs, non-ADA compliant residences, hazardous storm doors, basements and garages with poor lighting, basements infested with spiders and rodents, and forget about the workers, the house cleaners. Damn, yo hablo Espanol y vivia en Mexico y otras paises in America del Sur, so, yep, some pretty compelling stories of stress — both mental and physical deployed by ASH. It’s a bit amazing you would send off a boilerplate response, which is faulty CYA writing.
You have the right to fire laws on your side, Todd, so the rich employer wins, no? Well, thank goodness I have worked as a union organizer in Washington State, Oregon, and even in DC. For SEIU. Thank goodness I have gotten in front of judges for my various clients — houseless veterans, families, even foster youth — and advocated for them to drop penalties and reverse eviction findings and much more to assist those people. Thank goodness I learned how to manipulate administrative systems at colleges and universities, advocating for students against the dictates of provosts and VP’s.

Judaism’s Three Pillars and the Days of Awe
At sundown on Monday, Sept. 6, Rosh Hashanah 5782 begins. And, with the beginning of Rosh Hashanah, Jews all over the world will begin one of our faith’s most profound spiritual annual experiences – observance of Yamim Noraim, the Days of Awe.
These 10 days begin with Erev Rosh Hashanah and close at the end of Yom Kippur.
Rosh Hashanah, our faith’s New Year, marks the celebration of life itself. Judaism teaches that, as individuals and collectively in our communities, during the Days of Awe, we grapple with atoning for our transgressions and use the period as an opportunity to make peace with others we may have wronged.
At its core, the Days of Awe present us with an opportunity for teshuvah, to atone directly with those we have or may have wronged and ask for forgiveness. As we reach out to our brothers and sisters, we acknowledge our mortal frailties and go through the process of repentance. It is up to those from whom we seek forgiveness to either grant forgiveness or refuse to do so. Yet, if we ask with a pure heart, each of us takes a critical step in the process of atonement.
Pirkei Avot 1:2 teaches that the world stands on three pillars: Torah, work in the service of G-d and acts of human kindness. Mishna teaches that we are not alone in the world but must live and coexist with others. Thus, by studying Torah and gleaning its eternal lessons, we have an opportunity to become closer to G-d.
Studying Torah is a lifelong journey, that necessarily begins with a first step. As we celebrate Rosh Hashanah and begin experiencing the Days of Awe, we have a new opportunity to take a first step.
Each of us may use our lives in the service of G-d, and our opportunities are not delimited by our individual callings. Whether one is engaged in business, education, physical labor, a profession or any other undertaking, each day presents us with opportunities to perform work that is useful to other human beings. By remembering that we all are connected to each other as we undertake our daily tasks, we act in harmony with a greater purpose and are compelled to remember that none of us can survive alone.
The third pillar of Judaism sanctified in Pirkei Avot 1:2 is our responsibility to perform gemilut hasadim, literally “the giving of loving-kindness.” Carrying out acts of kindness toward others is a fundamental Jewish value. Such acts may be small and almost insignificant, such as opening a door for another. Or, an act of kindness may be visiting the sick or comforting the dying. One also may offer succor to those who are experiencing the harsh realities of life, the illness of a child or loved one, the pain of separation and divorce or the havoc of financial hardship.
Every act of kindness has the potential to ripple with larger meaning. For if each of us acts with kindness to others, still others may observe our actions and emulate them.
There are very special acts of kindness, known as showing rachmones, Yiddish for compassion. As Leo Rosten wrote in “The Joys of Yiddish”: “This quintessential word lies at the heart of Jewish thought and feeling. All of Judaism’s philosophy, ethics, ethos, learning, education and hierarchy of values are saturated with a sense of, and heightened sensitivity to rachmones.”

Perhaps the ultimate act of rachmones is undertaken by the sacred souls of the Chevra Kadisha, who selflessly prepare the dead for burial. Their acts of kindness are profound – they keep company with the dead awaiting internment. Such acts are referred to as chesed shel emet or a good deed of truth.
The mitzvot of the Chevra Kadisha are august, as the recipient can never repay the benefactor.
Not every act of kindness can compare with the blessed work of the Chevra Kadisha. But, we can draw inspiration from such selflessness and learn from it as a touchstone to practice rachmones and other acts of loving kindness in our daily lives.
As each of us enters the Days of Awe, let us contemplate Judaism’s beautiful teaching that the world is anchored on three ideas: Torah, service to G-d and acts of human kindness. By renewing our commitment to the Pillars of Judaism, each of us may perform tikkun olam – repairing the world – in the New Year.

Sweet Homes has 55-60 employees, most of them employed year-round, says Todd Korgan, and manages 125 houses along the coast for their owners. Environmental organizations are enormously critical of Zeldin as EPA administrator. “A Year of Betrayal: EPA Under Lee Zeldin,” was the heading of a posting this January by the Natural Resources Defense Council.
“The air we breathe, the water we drink…are not abstract concepts: they shape our health, our livelihoods, and our quality of life,” it said. “Under Lee Zeldin, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has made its sharpest turn in decades away from that core mission. Instead of doing its job to keep people safe, the agency is systematically dismantling protections for the environment and human health: weakening safeguards around clean air and clean water; leaving rural and urban communities alike more exposed to pollution from toxic chemicals; and undermining our ability to fight climate change the most existential threat we face today.”
The New Republic published a piece in March that reported on Zeldin giving the “keynote address…at a Heartland Institute conference of anti-environmental, pro-polluter lobbyists and activists who have been working for years to dismantle climate regulations.”
Zeldin was “greeted like a K-pop star at the climate deniers conference because he has delivered for them beyond their wildest dreams,” it said. “He has cut billions of dollars from climate grants the Biden administration has awarded, eviscerated pollution rules and enforcement capacity, and perhaps most significantly wiped out the legal basis of much climate regulation….At the Heartland gathering, a leading anti-climate activist [Marc Morano] called Zeldin ‘the most consequential EPA chief in the agency’s history.’”
Zeldin has been reported to be a leading candidate to replace Pam Bondi, dismissed by Trump as attorney general. But, the journal Politico, referring to that Heartland conference, ran an article headlined: “At climate contrarian gathering, allies urge Trump to keep Zeldin at EPA.”
It began: “There was one overarching message from a large group of climate contrarians gathered…at a hotel near the White House: please keep Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin in place.” It quoted Heartland President James Taylor saying: “Lee Zeldin has been unbelievable as EPA administrator. So selfishly, I would love to see him stay at EPA…This is the first time we have a true champion and cheerleader as head of EPA or this high up in the administration. These are great days.”
Over the past 56 years, curbs on air and water pollution have delivered unprecedented health and economic benefits to our nation. Our rivers don’t catch on fire; our cities’ air isn’t choked in soot and smog. These improvements seem inevitable to us now, but they weren’t.
It is the result of decades of progress made under Republican and Democratic administrations alike, as well as through bipartisan congressional consensus and compromise, with industrial polluters fighting this progress every step of the way.
Now comes Zeldin to do their bidding in-house, not on behalf of the American people but for the sake of short-term profits and ill-gotten gains for the industries that have the most to win from the loss of responsible public oversight.

Do you remember the promises made by the Democratic Party’s presidential and Congressional candidates on universal health insurance? You can forget their pledges and somber convictions now that your votes put the Democrats in charge of the House and the Senate. The Democrats’ leaders are abandoning their promises and retreating into a cowardly corporatist future.
Here is the present scene. Leading Democrats, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, have decided to spend tens of billions of taxpayer dollars to subsidize the giant health insurance companies like Aetna and United Healthcare to “cover recently laid-off workers and those who purchase their own coverage,” as The New York Times reported. There are no price restraints on the gouging insurance premiums or loophole-ridden policies. That is why giant corporate socialist insurers love the “American Rescue Plan,” which gives them socialist cash on the barrelhead. The law lets insurers decide how and whether they pay healthcare bills with co-pays, deductibles, or grant waivers. All these anti-consumer details are buried in the endless and inscrutable fine print.
Whatever happened to the Democrats’ (Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Pramila Jayapal, etc.) demand for single-payer – everybody in, nobody out – with free choice of doctors and hospitals instead of the existing cruel, and profiteering industry for which enough is never enough? Senator Sanders often mentioned a Yale study, published on February 15, 2020, that found:
“Although health care expenditure per capita is higher in the USA than in any other country, more than 37 million Americans do not have health insurance, and 41 million more have inadequate access to care. Efforts are ongoing to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which would exacerbate health-care inequities. By contrast, a universal system, such as that proposed in the Medicare for All Act, has the potential to transform the availability and efficiency of American health-care services. Taking into account both the costs of coverage expansion and the savings that would be achieved through the Medicare for All Act, we calculate that a single-payer, universal health-care system is likely to lead to a 13% savings in national health-care expenditure, equivalent to more than $450 billion annually….” (See the study: Improving the Prognosis of Health Care in the USA, February 15, 2020).
Well, House Speaker Pelosi is discouraging House Democrats from supporting Representative Pramila Jayapal’s H.R. 1384, Medicare for All Act of 2019, the gold standard for single-payer. News reports indicate that Representative Jayapal (D-WA) and Representative. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) will reintroduce their Medicare for All bill next week. Speaker Pelosi is telling Democrats in the House to focus instead on the modest expansion of Obamacare with its corporate welfare, utter complexity and seriously inadequate coverage. Almost eighty million Americans are presently uninsured or underinsured – a level that will not be significantly reduced for deprived workers by tweaking Obamacare during the Covid-19 pandemic.
A modified Obamacare, with no price ceilings, will hardly reduce the tens of thousands of American deaths every year because people cannot afford health insurance to get diagnosed and treated in time to prevent fatalities. The Yale study also found that: “ensuring health-care access for all Americans would save more than 68,000 lives and 1.73 million life-years every year compared with the status quo.” Tweaking Obamacare does little to stem the relentless surge in healthcare prices and profits in our country, which is unique for not placing billing ceilings on medical procedures and drugs. This “get whatever you can” behavior by the vendors is so uncontrolled that healthcare billing fraud and abuse is costing people one billion dollars A DAY! Malcolm Sparrow, who is an applied mathematician at Harvard, estimates medical billing fraud amounts to at least ten percent of all healthcare expenses each year.
Obamacare does nothing to limit the perverse incentives of a fee-for-service system that includes unnecessary operations, over-diagnosis, and over-prescribing, all of which increase the risks of preventable casualties. A Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine peer-reviewed study in 2016 estimates that close to 5000 lives are lost weekly due to such “preventable problems” just in hospitals (see: Study Suggests Medical Errors Now Third Leading Cause of Death in the U.S., May 3, 2016).
It gets worse. Year after year, the corporate Democrats, along with the Republicans, are facilitating expanding corporate takeovers of Medicare and Medicaid. The giant and widening attack on Medicare is called “Medicare Advantage,” which more accurately should be called “Medicare [Dis]advantage.” Our corporatized government, under both Parties, has been allowing deceptive promotional seductions of elderly people to take Medicare [Dis]advantage – now fully 40% of all Medicare beneficiaries – which is just a corporate insurance plan with multiple undisclosed tripwires.
Former President Trump worsened what he inherited from the Democrats in outsourcing Medicare. He launched something called “direct contracting” that, “could fully turn Medicare over to private health insurers” declared Diane Archer, former chair of Consumer Reports, in her article on March 8, 2021. Medicare Advantage premiums can be pricey. According to Kay Tillow, Executive Director of the Nurses Professional Organization, “The Medicare Advantage Plans are smiling all the way to the bank. In 2019 each Medicare Advantage beneficiary cost taxpayers $11,822 while those in original Medicare cost $10,813 each – that’s over $1,000 more and over 9% more per person for the for-profit insurers!”
Where is the outcry among Democratic politicians to reverse the corporate takeover of Medicare completely? Last year, many Democratic candidates pontificated about the need for single-payer health insurance, but now in Congress, we are scarcely hearing a peep about this vital human right. Their campaign rhetoric is just distant memory. Tragically, it is now harder than ever for the elderly to get out of Medicare [Dis]advantage and go back to traditional Medicare.
Millions of elderly people are deceived by televised marketing lies and slick brochures. The hapless Federal Trade Commission (FTC) should investigate and end the deceptions. Congressional investigations and hearings are long overdue. As the authoritative Dr. Fred Hyde says about the so-called Medicare Advantage: “It’s not what you pay, it’s what you get.” That is, the corporate health plan works until they get sick, until “they want their doctor and their hospital.” Dr. Hyde was referring to the narrow networks where these companies park their beneficiaries.
More astonishing in this story of the rapacious corporate takeover of Medicare is that AARP promotes these flawed plans to their members, takes paid ads by big insurers in AARP publications, and derives income from this collaboration.
Imagine, over 50,000 SEIU retirees are automatically placed by their unions in these Medicare [Dis]advantage traps without first being allowed to choose traditional Medicare.

PNHP’s membership counts over 15,000 pro-single-payer physicians. In a comment on the PNHP site, Don McCanne, M.D., says, “Remember, the mission of private, for-profit Medicare Advantage insurers is to make money, whereas the mission of our traditional Medicare program is to provide health care. We are supporting a program that deferentially caters to the private insurers and their interests when we should be supporting a program that is designed to take care of patients. Those being deceived by the private Medicare Advantage marketing materials really do not realize the bad deal they may be getting until they face the private insurer barriers to needed care. If it does, it can then move on and set a cap on what patients or insurance companies are required to pay for the drug in the state.
Last year, after years of setting up the board, gathering data and conducting analysis, the PDAB voted to cap the price of the prescription drug Enbrel, which treats rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases and which last year brought in more than $2.2 billion worldwide for Amgen. While other states have also established PDABs, Colorado became the first state in the country to impose a cap on the price of a specific prescription drug.
Amgen sued to overturn the cap — which is set to go into effect next year — and Thursday’s hearing was to debate whether Domenico should issue a temporary injunction blocking the pricing measure while the lawsuit is pending. At the conclusion of the hearing, Domenico said he would issue a written ruling soon.

The Treasury Department will use Iranian assets to help U.S. Gulf allies recover from damage caused by Tehran’s regime during the Iran war, a source familiar with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s thinking told CBS News Saturday.
The source said the Treasury intends to utilize all available authorities to make Iranian assets accessible for rebuilding and repair efforts related to any future damage inflicted by Iran.
Bessent has also directed the Treasury to seek comprehensive estimates from Gulf allies of the costs associated with repairing damage caused by Iran since the conflict began, the source said.

‘Illegal and unconstitutional’: Mass. congresspeople decry attack on Iran

Rep. Bill Keating decried what he described as Trump’s flippancy in starting a war with Iran.
“In the president’s own words, this is a ‘massive’ — his word — attack,” Keating said. “And it’s something that, in his words, may endanger the lives of our men and women in the military. And he said it so casually in his address.”
“Listen, I come from a Gold Star family myself. The most solemn obligation we have is to make a critical decision that could endanger the lives of our men and women in the military. That was not done in this instance,” Keating said.
He also warned that, in addition to jeopardizing members of the military, the attack could also have profound effects on civilians in the U.S.
“[Iran] could shut off the Strait of Hormuz,” he said, referring to the waterway through which a sizable portion of the world’s oil shipments pass. “That’ll effect every consumer … [War] also risks a cyberattack here at home that could be paralyzing and shut down parts of our country, which they have certain capabilities to do. And it also could inspire terrorist activities, not only in the [Persian] Gulf but here at home.”
Rep. Jim McGovern also accused Trump of taking a troublingly cavalier approach to military matters.
“This is a dangerous escalation,” McGovern said. “This president behaves like we can do whatever the hell we want, we can invade any country we want, we can bomb any country we want. I mean, today it’s Iran. Yesterday he’s talking about a friendly takeover of Cuba. He bombed Venezuela without congressional authorization.
“He ran for office and said ‘No more wars,’” McGovern added. “I don’t know what changed his mind. But … if you’re going to go to war, you need to get congressional authorization. This needs to be well thought-out, there needs to be a plan, there needs to be a clearly defined mission. And I see none of that.”
Rep. Stephen Lynch said that while a recent U.S. military buildup suggested that some form of military action might occur, no one in Congress outside the so-called “Gang of Eight” — a bipartisan group of high-ranking lawmakers — and possibly House Speaker Mike Johnson was actually briefed before the attacks.
“We had no communications from the president,” Lynch said. “And I’m one of the senior members of the military and foreign affairs subcommittee [of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform], and generally we have a little bit of a heads up on some of this stuff. But there was radio silence from the administration until 3 o’clock this morning, when the word went out.”
“We had the right to be informed,” Lynch added. “None of that happened.”
U.S. Sen. Ed Markey called the attack “illegal and unconstitutional.”
“It was not approved by Congress and holds dangers for all Americans,” Markey said in a statement. “Trump’s illegal actions raise the threat of escalation into a wider regional war with grave risks for U.S. troops and civilians in the region.”
Markey also noted that today’s attacks call into question the Trump Administration’s claims the Iran’s nuclear capabilities were “obliterated” in a prior attack last year, a point also made by McGovern and Rep. Lori Trahan.
“I’m praying for the safety of our servicemembers in the region who have been placed in harm’s way yet again and for their families who have already borne enormous sacrifice,” Trahan said in a statement.
“Like all Americans, they were told just 10 months ago — when Trump ordered strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites — that Iran’s nuclear capability was set back years as a result. Now, we’re being told something altogether different: that those strikes failed, and that Iran may be more dangerous than ever.”
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who sits on the Senate Armed Services committee, called for the Senate to come back into session immediately to vote on a war powers resolution that could bar the continuing use of force against Iran absent congressional approval. She, too, said Trump is making an end run around the Constitution.
“Donald Trump’s single-handedly starting another war with Iran is dangerous and illegal,” Warren said in a statement. “‘America first’ doesn’t mean dragging the United States into another forever war built on lies while ignoring the needs of Americans here at home. The Constitution is clear: Only Congress can declare war.”
Rep. Seth Moulton, who served with the Marines during the United States’ second war in Iraq, drew a parallel between that conflict and today’s attacks.
“The two basic problems with [President George W.] Bush’s War in Iraq were that it was based on a lie and there was no plan for what comes next,” Moulton said in a statement. “It’s hard to argue both are not true today.
“[Weapons of mass destruction] in Iraq was a lie. ‘Obliterating’ Iran’s nuclear facilities was a lie. The troops have to be wondering today, ‘What lies are we being told now?’ When you’re asked to risk your life for something, the most fundamental thing you want is the truth.”
Rep. Katherine Clark, the second-highest ranking Democrat in the House, called the president’s decision to attack Iran radically out of step with the needs of the American people.

Anti-Israel activists have increasingly turned to K-12 schools to target students with slanted accounts of the Middle East. CAMERA is confronting the problem with its K-12 work.
A History Channel program to be broadcast on the evening of August 9 will reportedly charge that the US and Israel have covered up the facts behind the attack by Israeli jets and torpedo boats on a US intelligence-gathering ship during the 1967 Six Day War. The USS Liberty was steaming more than 10 miles off the coast of El Arish on June 8, 1967 when Israeli jets, responding to reports of shelling from the sea, attacked the ship with cannon and napalm. Soon afterwards Israeli torpedo boats arrived at the scene and also attacked after first being fired upon by the Liberty. The Israeli seamen later explained they mistook the Liberty for an Egyptian ship, the El Quesir, but when they realized their target was a US ship, they ceased fire and offered assistance. Tragically, thirty-four US personnel were killed in the attack, and another 171 were wounded.
The cover-up —
At the height of the six-day war in 1967, Israel attacked a US spy ship, killing 34 men and injuring many more. The Israelis claimed it was an accident; the Americans backed them up. But, as James Bamford reveals in his new book, both governments concealed the horrific truth

At that moment in Washington, President Johnson was at his desk, on the phone, alternately shouting at congressional leaders and coaxing them to support his position on several pieces of pending legislation. But four minutes later, he was interrupted by Walt Rostow, national security adviser, on the other line. “The Liberty has been torpedoed in the Mediterranean,” Rostow told Johnson excitedly.
The NSA’s worst fears had come true. “After considerations of personnel safety,” said deputy director Tordella, “one of my immediate concerns, considering the depth of the water and the distance of the ship off shore, had to do with the classified materials on board.” Tordella got on the phone to the Joint Reconnaissance Centre (JCS) and spoke to the deputy director, a Navy captain named Vineyard. “I expressed my concern that the written material be burned if at all possible, and that the electronic equipment be salvaged if that were possible,” he said.
But Tordella was not prepared for what he heard. According to NSA documents – classified top secret- he was told that some senior officials in Washington wanted above all to protect Israel from embarrassment. “Captain Vineyard had mentioned during this conversation,” wrote Tordella, “that consideration was then being given by some unnamed Washington authorities to sink[ing] the Liberty in order that newspaper men would be unable to photograph her and thus inflame public opinion against the Israelis. I made an impolite comment about the idea.” Almost immediately, Tordella wrote a memorandum for the record, describing the conversation, and then locked it away.
A cover story for the Liberty was then quickly devised. “She was a communications research ship that was diverted from her research assignment,” it said, “to provide improved communication-relay links with the several US embassies around the entire Mediterranean during the current troubles.”
On the Liberty, black smoke was still escaping through more than 800 holes in the hull, and the effort to hush up the incident had already begun. Within hours of the attack, which left 34 men dead and two-thirds of the rest of the crew wounded, Israel asked President Johnson to quietly bury the incident. “Embassy Tel Aviv,” said a highly secret, very limited distribution message to the state department, “urged de-emphasis on publicity since proximity of vessel to scene of conflict was fuel for Arab suspicions that the US was aiding Israel.” Shortly thereafter, a total news ban was ordered by the Pentagon. No one in the field was allowed to say anything about the attack. All information was to come only from a few senior Washington officials.
Later that morning, Johnson took the unusual step of ordering the JCS to recall its fighters while the Liberty still lay smouldering, sinking, fearful of another attack and with its decks covered with the dead, dying and wounded. On board the flagship of the Sixth Fleet, Rear Admiral Lawrence R Geis, who commanded the carrier force in the Mediterranean, was angry and puzzled at the recall and protested to the Secretary of Defence, Robert S McNamara.
Geis was shocked by what he heard next. “President Lyndon Johnson came on with a comment that he didn’t care if the ship sunk, he would not embarrass his allies.” Geis told Lieutenant Commander David Lewis, head of the NSA group on the Liberty, about the comment but asked him to keep it secret until after Geis died. It was a promise that Lewis kept.
“AN ISRAEL-CENTRIC FOREIGN POLICY”
Twenty-five years ago, Condoleezza Rice, now President George W. Bush’s secretary of state and then his national security adviser, unwittingly explained in a remarkable burst of candor: “We have an Israel-centric foreign policy.” Rice’s statement was profound and accurate. Although she spoke nearly four decades after the assault on the Liberty, her words explain why the cover-up began and why it continues to this day.
Since 1967, many people in and out of government have learned the truth about the cover-up. Why were they silent? Why did reporters ignore tips that would surely lead to top news stories?
The sad and simple truth is that most Americans, especially those in public office and even those in the presidency, have a deadly fear of being labeled anti-Semitic. No matter how well documented the charges, they will neither utter nor write anything critical of Israel, for fear it will draw that unwarranted and unwelcome charge. Former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. George W. Ball once stated that the most powerful instrument of intimidation employed by Israel’s U.S. lobby is the “reckless charge of anti-Semitism.”

On 8 June 1967, Israeli forces attacked the US Navy research ship, USS Liberty, killing 34 and injuring 171 people.
The Liberty was off the coast of El Arish, Egypt, operated by the National Security Agency. It was tasked with monitoring communications during the Six-Day War between Israel and the Arab states, including Syria, Egypt, and Jordan.
First, the ship was attacked by air, then by torpedoes and artillery. Badly damaged, the crew launched three lifeboats but these were also attacked, which is considered a war crime under international law.
While official investigations by the US and Israel concluded that the attack was accidental, as Israeli forces believed the ship to be Egyptian, others disagree. Journalist James Bamford in his book Body of Secrets argued that the Liberty’s ability to intercept Israel’s communications could have been the motivation for the attack, in order to cover up war crimes such as the massacre of unarmed Egyptian prisoners in El Arish.
NSA Deputy Director, Louis Tordella, described the preliminary inquiry by the Israeli military as “a nice whitewash”, and US Secretary of State Dean Rusk stated: I was never satisfied with the Israeli explanation… I didn’t believe them then, and I don’t believe them to this day. The attack was outrageous.”
The US inquiry into the incident was held in secret, and survivors were issued gag orders banning them from ever speaking about what occurred. Despite the gag orders, survivors of the attack, who set up the Liberty Veterans Association, continue to demand a transparent investigation into the incident.
The president of the organisation told The Intercept:
“We now know that the Navy Court of Inquiry was merely for show, as the officers were told to come to the conclusion the Liberty did [its] job and the attack was accidental.”
Some survivors of the attack were accused of antisemitism for talking about their experiences.
At the time of writing (2024), the NSA still keeps its files on the attack secret.

In the weeks following the war, thousands of Palestinian refugees attempted to return to the West Bank after fleeing east across the Jordan River. But the Israeli army ambushed the returnees and massacred them. These killings were not widely publicized, but they reached the ears of Knesset Member Uri Avnery. A shocked soldier he encountered told him that he and his comrades had been ordered to shoot even at women and children. After collecting a second soldier’s testimony, Avnery asked IDF Chief of Staff Yitzhak Rabin to open an investigation and issue an order to stop the killings.
Avnery did not publish the details in his newspaper Haolam Hazeh, nor did he speak about them from the Knesset podium. Like others, he maintained silence and waited five decades before giving his testimony in his autobiography:
“Every night, Arabs attempted to cross the Jordan River from the east bank to the west bank. We blocked these crossings and received orders to shoot to kill, without warning. And indeed, shots were fired every night at men, women, and children — even on moonlit nights where it was possible to distinguish between men, women, and children. In the morning, we went out to survey the area, and by explicit order of the officer present, we killed those who were still alive, including those hiding and the wounded. After the killing was over, we buried the bodies with earth until the bulldozers arrived.”
Another soldier testified:
“They explained to us that if convoys of returning refugees from Jordan to the West Bank passed before us, we were to shoot them. I asked the officer: And if I hear children crying, do I shoot them too? The answer was: Don’t be like a girl.”

No laws explicitly penalize individuals by name for being “antisemitic.” However, there is an intense legal and political debate surrounding legislation that adopts specific definitions of antisemitism. Critics argue these laws create a “chilling effect” that unfairly labels legitimate political criticism of the Israeli government as antisemitic. Proponents assert these measures are necessary to identify and combat rising discrimination against Jewish people.
Accordingly, the Center for Security, Race and Rights offers two policy recommendations:
Reject codification into law or policy of the IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism.
The IHRA working definition of antisemitism has no place in law. The analysis presented here makes clear that the IHRA definition reproduces anti-Palestinian racism, exacerbates antisemitism, and serves as a tool of censorship of political speech, academic work, and civic engagement on matters of public importance, including criticism of Israel. A recent letter, organized by the Genocide and Holocaust Studies Crisis Network and signed by more than 1100 scholars – working in all fields, from doctoral students to senior professors, in universities large and small, public and private, around the world – calls for the rejection of the IHRA definition in law or policy. Furthermore, the original IHRA document explicitly notes it is a “non-legally binding” definition. That the IHRA definition has nevertheless been weaponized through legislation caused Kenneth Stern, a lead drafter of the text of the definition, to repudiate ongoing legislative efforts to codify it into law.
Existing anti-discrimination laws already protect Jewish people, as well as other minority groups, from discrimination. For that reason, there is no equivalent definition for anti-Muslim racism, anti-Black racism or racism against Indigenous people (to note just a few examples) in any state or federal law. Singling out antisemitism as the only form of racism deserving of a separate definition is not only unnecessary to protect Jews from discrimination, but also may give rise to antisemitic conspiracies about Jews controlling the government.
State legislatures and the U.S. Congress should rely on existing anti-discrimination laws to combat antisemitism, anti-Palestinian racism, and Islamophobia; and adhere to constitutional prohibitions against viewpoint-based regulation of speech.
State legislatures and the U.S. Congress should reject pending or future legislation that codify the IHRA definition of antisemitism into law. Existing statutes that adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism should be amended to remove the definition in adherence to the constitutional prohibition of regulation of speech and expressive conduct based purely on content or viewpoint.
The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution prohibits the government or public institutions from regulating speech based on content or viewpoint, unless a legally specified exception applies. Three legally prescribed exceptions include 1) speech or expressive conduct that pose a clear and present danger, 2) regulations of speech or expressive conduct that are content and viewpoint neutral, and 3) restrictions on the time, place and manner of the expression of speech or expressive conduct that are viewpoint and content neutral. None of these exceptions protect the laws codifying the IHRA definition from meritorious constitutional challenges.
The federal Antisemitism Awareness Act as well as state laws that adopt the IHRA definition are unconstitutionally prohibiting viewpoints whether explicitly in the law, in its “design” or by “operation,” because these laws favor pro-Israeli points of views while disfavoring views critical or opposed to Israel. That is, these laws intentionally regulate speech or expressive conduct based on the speaker’s content. The U.S. Supreme Court makes it clear that even valid justifications, such as combating antisemitism, cannot save a law “that is in fact based on the desire to suppress a particular point of view.”
The IHRA definition of antisemitism, if codified into law or enforced as policy by state actors, violates these constitutional prohibitions by imposing a legal penalty for speech and expressive conduct based on viewpoints that are critical of Israel in specific ways and the political ideology of Zionism. Attempts to codify it into law or policy should be rejected. Existing anti-discrimination law is sufficient to allow for the fact-specific and context-based analysis necessary to effectively combat hateful acts.

What Israel Banned in Gaza Before October 7
Long before the current genocide in Gaza, Israel’s blockade and restrictions had imposed severe limitations on daily life, impacting everything from access to essential goods to fundamental freedoms.
Since 2007, the blockade has shaped nearly every facet of life in Gaza, restricting movement, commerce, education, and even the availability of basic materials and services. Here are some of the most critical items and freedoms that have been systematically denied to the people of Gaza under Israel’s blockade:
Medical Supplies and Equipment
Hospitals and clinics in Gaza have long faced critical shortages of essential medical supplies, including medicines, surgical equipment, and basic healthcare tools. Restrictions have severely limited Gaza’s ability to import life-saving equipment, and access to specialized treatments outside Gaza was often denied. This left Gaza’s health sector under immense strain, unable to adequately treat chronic illnesses, emergency cases, or provide critical surgeries.
Building Materials
Concrete, steel, and other construction materials necessary for rebuilding homes, schools, and infrastructure were heavily restricted. Despite periodic allowances, Israel imposed restrictions on what materials could enter Gaza, claiming that these supplies could be used for military purposes. As a result, rebuilding efforts were slow, leaving many families to live in damaged homes and affecting Gaza’s overall infrastructure, including schools and hospitals.
Educational Materials and Technology
Essential educational supplies—like books, paper, lab equipment, and computers—were also restricted, hindering Gaza’s already fragile education system. Teachers and students alike faced a shortage of supplies, with Israel’s restrictions creating barriers to quality education, especially in technical fields where access to up-to-date equipment was crucial.
Agricultural Inputs and Fishing Equipment
Gaza’s agriculture and fishing industries were severely affected, with restrictions placed on items like fertilizers, animal feed, and even fishing nets. These limitations prevented local farmers and fishermen from making a living and impacted Gaza’s food security. Fishing, once a mainstay of Gaza’s economy, was often restricted to a few miles off the coast, reducing fish availability and income for fishing families.
Fuel and Electricity
Access to regular fuel and electricity shortages have always been a struggle in Gaza. Fuel restrictions affect everything from powering hospitals to water treatment plants, while electricity shortages meant families often went without power for up to 20 hours a day. The limited access to has also directly impacted Gaza’s clean water supply, as desalination and water treatment facilities depend on a consistent power supply to function.
Movement of People and Goods
Freedom of movement, both in and out of Gaza, was heavily restricted. Palestinians require permits to enter Israel, often denied, even for medical emergencies or family reunifications. Gaza’s economy was further stifled by these restrictions, with most goods either unable to leave Gaza or permitted only in certain quantities and types, curtailing business opportunities and employment.
Telecommunications and Internet Access
Gaza’s residents have always had limited access to internet and telecommunications infrastructure. Israel controls access to frequencies and hardware, preventing upgrades to high-speed networks leaving Gazans with limited bandwidth, which affects everything from education to healthcare, where options like telemedicine were affected.
Basic Food Items and Household Goods
Periodically, even basic food items, cleaning supplies, and household goods were restricted, leading to widespread shortages and higher prices. Goods that did make it into Gaza were often expensive due to scarcity, which made everyday essentials inaccessible to many families.
These conditions have only worsened due to the ongoing bombardment of Gaza. In the face of the 18-year-long Israeli siege of Gaza and the genocide, we continue our mission to bring essential goods and services to our people on the ground, advocating for their rights to live with dignity and access the basic freedoms and necessities that every human deserves.

Fucking JEWS: On Wednesday, a case against Yoel Kaplan, an Israeli-American citizen, active Israeli soldier and head of Albania’s small Jewish community, was submitted to the prosecutor general in Tirana.

The International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP), a UK-based rights group, said on Wednesday that it had “filed a formal notice to Albanian police regarding a member of the [Israeli army] suspected of participating in war crimes.”
“We have reason to believe that this individual is currently present within Albanian jurisdiction, and that domestic police must urgently investigate and arrest them,” the statement said. ICJP did not name the suspect for legal reasons.

10 of 15 elected Florida DNC members put their names to a joint letter accusing her of “undermining Black political power when it becomes politically convenient.” Broward County State Senator Shevrin Jones declared that the fight is about expanding Black representation: “My fight is for Black representation, and I am in the business of expanding it, not diminishing it.” Congressional hopeful Elijah Manley stated, “I didn’t think a white Democrat would be the one to take away a Black seat.” Congressional Black Caucus Chair Yvette Clarke said Wasserman Schultz’s entry caused “consternation”—adding that when informed of the decision, she replied simply: “Thanks for informing me.”
Examining Wasserman Schultz’s political history helps explain why her candidacy in a black district has generated such fierce opposition. She has held elected office continuously since 1992, serving first in the Florida House of Representatives from 1992 to 2000, then moving to the Florida State Senate from 2000 to 2004, and occupying her seat in the U.S. House of Representatives since January 2005. She holds the distinction of being Florida’s first Jewish congresswoman and led the Democratic National Committee as its Chair from 2011 to 2016.
Wasserman Schultz ranks among the most forthright Zionists serving in Congress. She has steadfastly supported the constant delivery of American military aid to Israel and labored assiduously to ensure that U.S. aid flows to Israel without preconditions. She characterized her identity as a “Jewish mother” as the lens through which she views every foreign policy matter concerning Israel. AIPAC stands as her largest organizational donor at $940,552 in the 2025-2026 cycle, according to OpenSecrets data.
Former UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland says he has been barred from attending an upcoming UFC fight card at the White House, alleging political retaliation tied to his outspoken criticism of PresidentDonald Trump and U.S. foreign policy, though officials have not confirmed the claim.

But first, we will address one of the most popular topics currently making the rounds apropos the Russian conflict: that of Russian elites supposedly increasingly “souring” toward the war. This was most notably discussed in a recent WSJ piece which covered the topic in about as impartial and credible way as can be done by a Western press outlet:
It notes that several high profile Russian figures have admitted that Russia’s aims in the war are no longer possible to achieve. Popular figure Oleg Tsaryov, for instance, wrote in his Telegram last month that Russia should just end the war now and declare victory, as standing up to Europe and regaining most of Novorossiya is alone already a victory.
[They wanted Russia] to be isolated. Turned into a pariah. But it didn’t work out. On the contrary. Thanks to Russia’s resilience, the West has lost its monopoly on controlling the world. Looking at Russia and China, India and the global South have become bolder in defending their national interests. Russia has shown that one doesn’t have to obey someone else’s dictate. Thanks to Russia, the world has become multipolar.
And the West, as a result, has fallen apart. A crisis in Europe. Parties that supported the war against Russia are losing ratings. The US and Europe are at loggerheads.
Having stood our ground, we have won. We should proceed from the fact that we have already won. Our task is to end the war and hold on to the gains, build a prosperous Novorossiya.
The biggest plus from the end of the war is that our defenders will return home. We will stop losing Russian lives. All plans to “bury” Russia have failed. We’ve paid a high price. But we’ve stood our ground and brought our land and our people home. For the country, this is a victory.
He credibly argues that dreams of major military victory over Ukraine are unrealistic at this point because the power disparity between the entire West which backs Ukraine and that of singular Russia is simply too vast:
Power ratio of the parties
The SVO is being conducted on the territory of Ukraine, it is supported by fifty developed economies of the world, and Russia’s allies are the DPRK and Belarus. Taking into account the Western assistance attracted (both in equipment and in monetary terms), Ukrainian capabilities are approximately equal to the Russian military budget and exceed Russian expenditures directly on the SVO. Ukraine has a smaller population, but it is carrying out a general mobilization, while Russia has carried out only one wave of mobilization of three hundred thousand people during the war. Therefore, in terms of human resources, the capabilities of the parties are comparable.
Russia has superior firepower and air defense capabilities, but Ukraine, with access to Western capabilities, has an advantage in important areas such as tactical intelligence and communications. The use of drones, a key weapon in this war, is at a comparable level between the two sides.
Thus, the war is between comparable opponents. Historically, such wars have rarely led to the complete destruction of one side. Additionally, they can have a long duration, and the goals of the parties in such wars are significantly adjusted based on the course of the conflict. This adjustment is not surprising, and it does not necessarily indicate failure.
But what separates his critique is that he directly responds to the most popular argument from pro-Russian maximalists that once Russia turns up the intensity and switches the SMO to a “full scale war”, things will be different and Ukraine will be handily defeated. He dismisses such fantasies as childish.
War “for real”
Can we achieve significantly better results if, as many well-known authors write, we demonstrate “will,” “start fighting for real,” “stop holding back,” “unite for victory,” etc.? No, we have no solid basis to expect such qualitatively different results. Military planning should be based on the worst-case scenario as the baseline and cannot be based on dreams.
Ukraine is undoubtedly depleting its human resources faster than Russia. However, unlike Russia, Ukraine is operating under a state of war, which gives it greater resilience, allowing the government to control the domestic agenda and use violence to suppress dissent. The Ukrainian economy has been largely destroyed, and Ukraine’s economic growth is largely artificial, relying on external funding for military purposes. However, as long as the European Union continues to fund the war, this is not a significant concern. The criteria for resilience applied to a typical war-torn nation relying on its own resources do not apply to Ukraine. The Ukrainian authorities can withdraw much more of their population from the economy and lose much more of it on the battlefield than a “normal” country.
We see growing difficulties with mobilization and an increase in attacks on TSK employees in Ukraine, but so far this has not escalated into any coordinated protest actions, even at the level of individual regions. There is no reason to predict that this will happen in the foreseeable future. We must assume that Ukraine will continue to hold the front for several more years.
Equally, we have no reason to expect that the positional impasse in the war in Ukraine will be overcome in the foreseeable future. So far, no tactical or technical solutions have been found that would give us a chance to return to mobile warfare in the face of the transparency of the battlefield and the massive use of FPV-drones in the absence of effective countermeasures.
There is no reason to expect the rapid development of technical means and tactical techniques that would allow for a deep breakthrough of the enemy’s defenses. It is possible that such techniques are being developed in secrecy, but we can only rely on the information that is available to us. Therefore, the idea that we can quickly collapse the Ukrainian front by “mobilizing, straining, and striking with all our might” should also be discarded and forgotten. The Russian command is operating within the constraints of the situation, trying to achieve the best possible outcome.
He also dismisses the idea of “destroying the Dnieper bridges”, and how that would cripple Ukraine. He believes Russia is already operating at maximum military capacity and cannot realistically cause greater strain on Ukraine than is already being doled out.
Ultimately, he concludes the freezing of the conflict along current lines is the only reasonable expectation, given historical precedents.
In a new piece they write that such wishful thinking vastly exaggerated an internal elite squabble that had no real existential parameters:
For several weeks, some commentators have been proclaiming that Russian President Vladimir Putin is losing control, that his popularity is waning, and an open conflict between Russian elite groups is undermining the regime. The main indicator of the system’s instability was supposedly the unusual level of frustration over internet shutdowns in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Insiders cited by Bloomberg suggested Putin would ease restrictions in the face of pressure from his domestic politics bloc. The Guardian’s sources disagreed, claiming Putin was doubling down because of his total reliance on the Federal Security Service (FSB).
None of this was idle fantasy. Tension within the Russian political system really did grow, but it was not an existential crisis. The conflict over internet restrictions was bureaucratic—not political. It was not a fight for freedom, nor an attempt to seize power. It was a clash between two groups of bureaucrats seeking to protect their interests, and the fall in Putin’s rating was just a weapon in this conflict.
Ultimately, Russia’s security establishment came out on top. The online restrictions have become normalized, and the FSB and the government have been tasked with working together to ensure certain key functions remain accessible.
Their conclusion? Putin and the “security state” won, showing rapid stabilization of any internal quarrels:
In other words, the conflict was settled without endangering the regime. The system was successfully stabilized.
The piece even decries Putin’s recent “popularity drop” in polls as mostly illusory, and more the result of deliberate political maneuvering by opponents in the so-called ‘bureaucracy’.

The date is not 2026, it’s 1999. Or 2008. Or 2014. It doesn’t matter. Each time, Russia did not collapse.
…for some decades, one could see headlines that Russia is either on the brink of collapse or is collapsing at any moment. A 2001 cover story in The Atlantic proclaimed that “Russia is finished.” Recently, a new slew of arguments for Russia’s decline has been spritzed into the discourse, predicting the collapse of the Russian military or even a coup back in Moscow.
They likewise conclude: don’t hold your breath, Russia is doing fine and is building huge inroads with the Global South despite being under historic-level sanctions.
How to reconcile these two sides?…

While NATO recognizes strategy (political objectives) and tactics (weapons employment), it treats the operational level as merely administrative sequencing.

Russian doctrine might seem to be the same – “war is politics by another name” but the mathematics is different.
Russian doctrine elevates operative art to a distinct discipline: the orchestration of forces across time and space to transform tactical actions into strategic outcomes through multiplicative rather than additive effects. Where Western planners often assume victories accumulate linearly, such as a battalion secures a village, a brigade secures a district, Russian operative art seeks synergistic cascades: electronic warfare blinds targeting systems, enabling artillery to disrupt logistics, which isolates infantry, making them vulnerable to maneuver that is all within a compressed timeframe that prevents enemy recovery.

Two or three such strikes could neutralize even the deepest command centers, rendering traditional notions of “secure bunkers” obsolete.
Critically, these weapons currently lack effective countermeasures. Western missile defense systems such as THAAD and PAC-3 rely on “hit-to-kill” interceptors that must physically collide with incoming threats. Documents obtained by Wired reveal that the Department of Homeland Security and law enforcement agencies have begun scrutinizing anyone who might organize against data centers as a potential threat. They are doing so under a continuallyexpanding federal “counterterrorism” dragnet.
Given that the administration has promoted militarized AI as key to U.S. dominance, and that its use has proliferated in DHS, it’s unsurprising that the administration has developed “anti-tech extremism” as a means of targeting those who oppose data centers and the unbridled proliferation of AI.
Here is the conundrum: collectives and residents fighting for a healthy planet and an opportunity to have a say in our collective future are deemed enemies of the state, while corporate tech power grows thanks to government deregulation of AI and the acceleration of data center construction.
In this context, the state’s focus on the “anti-tech extremist” serves an obvious agenda: to ramp up social control and limit political possibilities.
This agenda has long animated the homeland security state’s construction of threats. Precursors to the “anti-tech extremist” include the “terrorist,” the “illegal,” and, more recently, the “worst of the worst.” In creating categories of people deemed to present an existential threat, DHS has used a well-worn tactic to legitimate repressive state power. And on a broader scale, it is using this tactic to extend the border everywhere.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz announced she would be running for Congress to represent Florida’s 20th Congressional District, a dense parcel of central Broward County directly north of the district she currently represents. Gov. DeSantis’s last-minute gerrymandering gambit had divided her current district, the 25th, into the far corners of four new districts, none of which were the 20th, but the appeal to a political insider was obvious: The 20th contains the largest concentration of Democratic voters in the state.
The disincentive to run was equally obvious: The district was explicitly drawn back in 1991 to be a majority-Black district, in accordance with a provision of the Voting Rights Act that was just largely scrapped by the Supreme Court in a decision met with the universal condemnation of Democrats, mostly because it represented the latest gambit in a long campaign to gut the VRA and suppress the votes of low-income minorities. Ironically but predictably, the 20th survived the gerrymander demographically intact; as currently constructed, roughly half of its population is Black, a quarter is white, and about 65 percent are registered Democrats.
What on earth would possess lily-white Wasserman Schultz, who was warning about the Supreme Court plot to gut the VRA long before it was cool, to parachute into a race alongside four viable Black candidates, less than four months before the primary?

In this third decade of the third millennium, our world is sailing into uncharted political and historical waters.
For a long time now it has been under the ever-increasing domination of a secretive judeo-supremacist crime network, but, until very recently, anybody pointing this out was automatically regarded as a crazed “anti-semitic conspiracy theorist” or even a “Nazi”.
However, since 2020, a spiralling sequence of events including Covid, the war in Ukraine, Gaza, the Epstein affair, the Iran war and the murder of Charlie Kirk in the USA has completely changed the situation. Combined with the growing authoritarianism of states everywhere and their failure to take any action against Israel, or Jeffrey Epstein’s paedocriminal associates, this has all made it very obvious to many people who it is that is pulling the strings of power behind the scenes.
Not everybody has caught up with reality yet, of course, but I sense we are at the point where the truth can no longer be stopped from spreading. If this indeed happens, a certain point will be reached at which the political landscape will have completely changed and instead of bickering over “left” and “right” allegiances, people everywhere will find themselves united against the same imperialist occupation.

BACKGROUND:
Climate change is causing an increase in extreme heat. Individuals with cardiovascular disease are at high risk of heat-related adverse health effects. How the burden of extreme heat–associated cardiovascular deaths in the United States will change with the projected rise in extreme heat is unknown.
METHODS:
We obtained data on cardiovascular deaths among adults and the number of extreme heat days (maximum heat index ≥90 °F [32.2 °C]) in each county in the contiguous United States from 2008 to 2019. Based on representative concentration pathway trajectories that model greenhouse gas emissions and shared socioeconomic pathways (SSP) that model future socioeconomic scenarios and demographic projections, we obtained county-level projected numbers of extreme heat days and populations under 2 scenarios for the midcentury period 2036 to 2065: SSP2-4.5 (representing demographic projections from a “middle-of-the-road” socioeconomic scenario and an intermediate increase in emissions) and SSP5-8.5 (demographic projections in an economy based on “fossil-fueled development” and a large increase in emissions). The association of cardiovascular mortality with extreme heat was estimated with a Poisson fixed-effects model. Using estimates from this model, the projected number of excess cardiovascular deaths associated with extreme heat was calculated.
Extreme heat was associated with 1651 (95% CI, 921–2381) excess cardiovascular deaths per year from 2008 to 2019. By midcentury, extreme heat is projected to be associated with 4320 (95% CI, 2369–6272) excess deaths annually, which is an increase of 162% (95% CI, 142–182) under SSP2-4.5, and 5491 (95% CI, 3011–7972) annual excess deaths, which is an increase of 233% (95% CI, 206–259) under SSP5-8.5. Elderly adults are projected to have a 3.5 (95% CI, 3.2–3.8) times greater increase in deaths in the SSP2-4.5 scenario compared with nonelderly adults. Non-Hispanic Black adults are projected to have a 4.6 (95% CI, 2.8–6.4) times greater increase compared with non-Hispanic White adults. The projected change in deaths was not statistically significantly different for other race and ethnicity groups or between men and women.
CONCLUSIONS:
By midcentury, extreme heat is projected to be associated with a significantly greater burden of excess cardiovascular deaths in the contiguous United States.

One result is that anti-war movements show themselves mostly powerless to impede US invasions, regime change operations, even genocide. The anti-war movements proved unable to disrupt war preparations, let alone economic production. This had a demoralizing impact, as many came to see mass protests as ineffective. Now, while at least 60% of people oppose the war on Iran, and 40% see the US as losing, no anti-war movement has developed. The anti-war left is unable, even unwilling to reach this majority.
This gives the ruling class freer hand to continue endless war – more and more their solution for maintaining world hegemony. It is true that the US empire has declined from the height of power it held both right after World War II and again after the collapse of the Soviet bloc. Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting has suggested cutting employers’ National Insurance (NI) could be a way to incentivise businesses to hire more young people.
In an interview with the Sunday Times, he also said some new North Sea drilling for oil and gas should be allowed as it would raise more tax.
