There’s an influx of Israelis in Portugal, many of who have taken advantage of the 2005 legislation allowing people to get a Portuguese passport through Sephardic heritage to enjoy the great wine, food, and lifestyle of this culinary heaven.
Jewish Portuguese culture has a history that predates the (now finished) Passport laws allowing Sephardic Jews to get Portuguese passports, however. There has been a Jewish presence in the region since before the Roman Empire, and while that presence has involved good times, times of persecution, and times of expulsion, today Portugal is a welcoming place for Jewish people.
During the early Middle Ages, the Jewish community thrived. During the Inquisition, 120,000 Spanish Jews fled to Portugal and then were later expelled themselves. Jewish heritage in Portugal and Jewish culture survived in crypto-Jewish communities, but the once thriving community had been decimated and spread out to places like Turkey, Morocco, London, and Amsterdam.
In the 19th century, however, Moroccan Jews and Jews from Russia, Germany and Poland arrived to start communities in Porto and Lisbon.
Portuguese Jewish culture is not at the same height as its Medieval heyday but is now home to a growing community of Jews. Young MC, another artist advertised to perform, also said he won’t be there. “I HAVE INFORMED MY AGENTS THAT I WILL NOT BE PERFORMING AT THE FREEDOM 250 EVENT,” he posted on Facebook. “The artists were never told about any political involvement with the event. And despite the claims by the organizers that the event is non-partisan, SPIN magazine describes it as Trump-backed. I hope to perform in D.C. in the near future at an event that is not so politically charged.”

Rep. Lisa Subeck, D-Madison, co-sponsored the bill. She said the bill is needed to combat rising antisemitism following the beginning of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023.
“It sets some guidance to be considered when determining whether or not something is antisemitism,” Subeck said to the Assembly in February.
The law also incorporates examples that the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance considers to be antisemitic, including drawing comparisons between contemporary Israeli policy and that of Nazi Germany. The definition also says calling the state of Israel a racist project would qualify as antisemitic, by “denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination.”
An open letter from more than 30 Wisconsin organizations, including the state chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union and Jewish Voice for Peace Action, urged Evers to veto the bill.
The letter cited instances of alleged censorship in states like Kentucky or Florida that have adopted the definition. In Kentucky, a professor faced disciplinary action for speech criticizing Israel. In Florida, the state’s university system flagged any courses with certain keywords for review for “antisemitic or anti-Israeli bias” following the adoption of this definition in 2024.
“Wisconsin should reject any effort that codifies a framework that allows similar enforcement or censorship against students, faculty, journalists, or advocates exercising their First Amendment rights,” the letter read.

While Wisconsin does not have the highest number of prisons per capita, it has historically maintained among the highest rates of Black incarceration in the United States and incarcerates a higher percentage of its residents than most democracies.

“They just cram us in wherever they can, it’s sad,” wrote Sarah Buckingham, who is currently incarcerated at Robert E. Ellsworth Correctional Center, a minimum-security facility in Racine County that now houses more than twice as many people as it was designed for.
Across the system, the rising number of prisoners and a shortage of staff have strained resources. Prisoners often wait months or years for limited spots in treatment, education and work programs, the very programs designed to prepare them for release. That, advocates say, could mean people wait longer to get out, or even end up returning to prison — making facilities even more crowded.
Wisconsin’s prison system is currently at about 133 percent of capacity. Since 1990, the total number of prisoners has roughly tripled, from about 7,000 inmates to 23,775 in 2018. Experts estimate that the state’s prison population will reach 24,350 by the end of 2021. This in a state that the U.S. census estimated had a population of about 5.8 million as of 2019.
Besides incarceration, Wisconsin’s criminal code offers probation and parole. These are both types of supervised release. Probation allows someone convicted of a serious crime to avoid jail or prison, and parole gives a prisoner the chance to serve the balance of their sentence on the outside.
Being on probation or parole is far from being free. State law imposes a minimum of 18 rules that individuals must follow, such as meeting with their probation agent regularly and limits on how much cash they are allowed to carry. In some cases, the law will impose even more rules. Violating a rule can send you back to prison without being charged with or convicted of a new crime.
Differences based on race
Of Wisconsin’s 23,775 prisoners in 2018, about 37 percent were behind bars were there due to one of these revocation-only admissions. Black Wisconsinites are particularly affected by this system. The Census states that fewer than 7 percent of state residents identify as black. But from 2000 through 2018, 60 percent of prison inmates there for a revocation-only violation were black.
It might seem logical that an increase in Wisconsin’s prison population over the last 30 years is the result of increased crime. But the numbers dispute this. For instance, the property crime rate in the state has dropped since 2013, and is 27 percent lower than the national average. Violent crime is also 21 percent below the U.S. average. Instead, it appears that social problems that disproportionately affect black Wisconsinites, such as unemployment, untreated mental illness, and lower wages, could be larger factors.
The “Shadow” of Opioids: Because opioids and fentanyl have historically dominated headlines and state funding, meth has quietly proliferated with less public and financial intervention.
Polysubstance Overdoses: While meth users previously died less frequently from overdoses compared to opioid users, stimulant-involved fatal overdoses—particularly from meth combined with fentanyl or cocaine—are sharply rising.

Like other amphetamines, meth elevates dopamine levels in the brain, creating a rush. But it is significantly more powerful than stimulants like cocaine, said Timothy Easker, director of Chippewa County Department of Human Services.
Meth can keep individuals awake for days on end, causing psychosis and even organ failure.
While the widely known opioid epidemic killed 3,800 people in Wisconsin between 2014 and 2018, a surge in meth use has quietly supplanted opioids in western and northern parts of the state, according to service providers and public health officials.
The State Crime Laboratory handled 1,452 meth cases in 2018 — an increase of more than 450 percent since 2008. The number far exceeded the 1,055 heroin cases handled by the lab that year.
Unlike some Midwestern states, where police shut down hundreds of meth labs a year, in Wisconsin, the problem is more hidden. Much of the meth used here originates in Mexico and is transported to the Twin Cities, according to a 2016 analysis of methamphetamine use and trafficking compiled by federal and state law enforcement officials.
Sheila Weix, director of substance abuse services at Marshfield Clinic’s Family Health Center, said when she started treating addiction in central and northern parts of the state in the 1980s, alcohol, “nerve” pills, marijuana, cocaine and heroin were the most common. Then, in the early 1990s, meth appeared. Its prevalence rose, then ebbed when the opioid epidemic hit.
Now she is again seeing increasing numbers of people with meth addictions.
Robert Morrison, executive director of the National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors, said meth’s resurgence reminds him of the movie “Groundhog Day.” Ironically, some people are using meth to help with withdrawal from opioids. Others are using it because it is cheap and available.
“It’s about the buzz,” Easker said. “People use drugs for the buzz, and people get the most bang for their buck with (meth).”
“There is a lot of violence associated with it,” said Walensky. “They are so jacked up and it lasts so long in their bodies.”
Walensky says it seems like everyone he runs into has a little meth on them.
In 2023, the drug most often identified in samples sent by law enforcement to the State Crime Lab was meth, which accounted for 1,378 of the 4,805 samples tested — more than cocaine or heroin or fentanyl or even THC, the active ingredient in cannabis. Cops and prosecutors don’t send all the drugs they recover to the lab, and pot usage, rarely prosecuted nowadays, is surely much more prevalent in the state than meth usage. But meth, at least by the one measure of Crime Lab analysis, may be more widely abused than any of the other harder drugs.

He’s a short red-bearded white cop standing over me and my friend, KK (initials to be revealed soon). We are in KK’s hometown, Merrill, Wisconsin, population 9,300.
“What’s up, officer?”
“We have a complaint from a resident who says you were on his property taking pictures of his house and his juvenile daughter.”
So begins the morning in Merrill, or at least, after a few hours of photographing with a borrowed Canon KK’s old haunts, his schools, churches, and, yep, the house he grew up in. It was 9 am when I got him to stand on the sidewalk to photograph KK in front of the small house where he spent his youth. It was his grandparents’ home. Small, sort of shotgun clapboard style no with faded vinyl siding.
Four shots, and we took off, turned for some of the street scenes where he played, and, then we moved on with the pick-up and my shutterbug disease.
I call these drive-by shoots, so we drove and then stopped, posed, and then shot film. He is a 65-year-old whom I met on the “internet” who has been a good friend, a good reader of my stuff, including books, for more than a year. His wife died in October 2022, in River Falls, where they moved decades before leaving both of their hometowns, Merrill. Merrill is his and his deceased wife’s birthplace and family locales. Bad memories for KK, and I don’t know about his wife, Cheri.
“The owner of the home accused you of trespassing, stepping on his lawn, and photographing his teenage daughter. He wants you arrested.”
Welcome to America, and sure, I knew I’d get out of this stupidity, but what flashes in my mind is the mindlessness of America, the flyover states’ policing and politics, the rural places with contradictory “values,” old sagging towns with closed businesses, tired homes, and more, which I will cover in this series. “I’m a journalist, and I have been taking photos of Merrill the past few hours, and I can tell you we did not go on the lawn, and I was photographing KK, who is from Merrill. I saw no girl in a window, and there is no girl in a window in the four shots I took of a guy out in front of his childhood house.”
“The house owner said his daughter was upstairs, wondering what you were photographing, and said you photographed her.”
The conversation went from here and there, and we gave up our IDs, and alas, yeah, KK is an ex-con (with air quotes), ten years behind bars total, six in prisons throughout Wisconsin. He’s known in these parts, and he’s still on paper, which means he is on “supervision,” not allowed to leave the state, and his name and his “crimes” would be coming up on the ID check.
I went outside, to the camper, and pulled out the Canon. The shots showed I was on the public access, sidewalk, and road, and there is no peeping woman in any photograph looking at these aliens. KK stayed on the sidewalk. I shot him there.
America. The big, burly guy/father followed the cops who went around town looking for this camper/pick-up truck combo, a unique-looking rig. They spotted us at the local restaurant, The Pine Ridge.
America. This guy came up to me, as the cop was facing me, and while I showed him the photos in question, this guy, the so-called victim, pulled out his phone camera and started filming the cop and me.
America. “I’m telling you if they come back and start photographing my house, I will shoot them. I’ll shoot anyone coming onto my property.”
“Well, we’ll deal with that if that happens.”
“I’m not fucking joking. I will get my rifle and shoot the sons of bitches.”
America. After he went back to the five other police vehilces, I gave the cop the old thought exeperiment: “So, in this little Wisconsin town, you have people shooting anyone going onto lawns, with all these homes with no fences, no signs about no tresspassing, you really think I am supposed to believe you can arrest me for stepping on a lawn and photographing my friend’s old childhood home?”
America. “Well, it is trespassing.”
“So you have a lot of shootings in Merrill? Especially in the summertime when kids and teens and their dads and aunts and uncles might be throwing frisbees and balls for dogs and then errant throws and tosses might get a ball or frisbee near the house and some innocent ball player retrieving it by some window or wall?”
America. “It’s trespassing to step on someone’s property, and you can get arrested.”
America. “So Merrill has a lot of arrests for kids and dads trespassing? You bust dogs pooping on property, too?”
America. “So, you did background checks on us. What about this guy?”
“Yes.”
“And, you found some ‘interesting’ things in his background?”
The cop smiled. “Yep, there are some rough things in his past.”
America. “So, put the shoe on the other foot. Now, if I were in this parking lot, and say, none of this happened, but I started photographing the parking lot, the cool sign, and then this guy with his Duck Dynasty beard, I know this asshole would go after me hard, no questions asked. I’ve been around the block, around many parts of the world, worked in prisons, and I KNOW for a fact this punk would go after me for photographing him in a public place. Just like he just did with me.”
America. The cop smiled and nodded his head. “Look, think about it, officer. If I was in Madison, on a street around the university, and had buddies and me tossing footballs, and maybe me photographing them, and then one ball ended up on a lawn, the homeowner/resident could call the cops and have us arrested? And then this shoot-to-kill crap, you think in a university town the cops would be allowing this? The city’s lawmakers, they’d be okay with college students or faculty or whoever getting arrested for going after a loose beachball or softball off the lawn?”
America. “I’ve never been a policeman anywhere but here, in Merrill. I don’t know about other cities’ ordinances.”
America. Ahh, imagine the headlines: “Trick or Treaters Shot in Merrill, Wisconsin, after a dozen home renters pulled out AR-15s and Glocks and started firing away.” Or, “Local Photographer Dies after Homeowner Plugs him Between the Eyes for Photographing old Historic Home.”
America. And, it only gets worse. “Look, we will be keeping him here until you all get on your way to make sure he doesn’t follow you. Are you done photographing in that area of town?”
America. “I am photographing bridges, pubs, old fronts of buildings, and more. And, we have a graveside service at the cemetery at one. His wife just passed away last October and there is a marble monument bench in the graveyard and 20 family members showing up. I’m officiating it.”
America. “Well, we’ll keep him here. You should be fine. The cemetery is a good mile from his house.”
America. “So, this guy wanted to have you ticket us?”
“Actually, he wanted us to arrest you both for trespassing and stalking his daughter.”
America. “You know this is bullshit, really. Smalltown, Wisconsin, and I take other small towns in this cheesehead state have similar values, similar ‘shoot first, ask questions later’ ordinances.”
“Well, he lives in a sketchy part of town and they are worried about their stuff in the yard and on porches.”
America. Shoot to protect the barbecue and patio furniture.
City of Parks. Well, the next iteration of this first part deals with the City of Bars.
“At one time, there were 53 bars in Merrill,” KK said. “I knew them all. That’s what people did when I was growing up. They still do, but there aren’t that many now. Many closed up.”
Bars and churches, on every street corner. All Aboard, Gesundheit, and so many run-down joints and holes in the wall, even back when KK was taking fast cars and noisy motorcycles through town to push the oppressiveness out of his skin. His first take-down by the law was when he was 16. Booze.
America. The Chatterbox, Hub Inn, Newwood Tap, Ali Baba’s, Dee’s Bear Den, Northway Club, Hinz’s Cork and Dine, 1-900 Club, Beacon Bar, Dick and Shirl’s, Victory Lane.
The victory in this town is working in bone-numbing mill jobs, living in a town of killing deer and yanking walleyes from the lakes and rivers, beatings at home, knuckling the young ones in the head, and, drinking at those favorite watering holes.
America. The best Friday Fish Fries are had at those booze joints. Hamburger runs, deep-fried Wisconsin cheese curds, and puffy fries. Bars. Pubs. Clubs. Lounges.
America. In Eagle River, north of Merrill, we have the Pioneer, where you pay a buck for an ashtray to smoke inside, so the collected tray fees are used if the bar gets cited for allowing cigs and combustion inside.
America, the land of Disney thinking, cutesy names, and one’s legacy emblazoned on some Blatz or PBR lighted sign, passed from generation to generation.
Merrill, America: Plowman’s Playhouse, Mid-City Tap, Frish’s Place, Clubs 64 or 107, Club Morder, Gail’s Place, Urban Darlene’s, E and K Tap, The Robber’s Roost, Corner Bar, Avenue Bar, Gil’s Bar, Ballyhoo’s, Trophy Bar, Legion Lounge, Rock Island Resort and we can’s forget S & S Bar — Social and Sick. This one gives money gained from liver damage and all night with the boys and a $100 tab to the local hospital. You know, smoke up a pack of Kools, down whiskey a-go-go, and then at the end of the year, S & S’s proprietors hand over some of that mullah go to cancer education, treatments, what have you.
America. Drink, carouse, stay away from the kids, pound back the beers and shots, yell at the top of your lungs how you are right, and America is about might makes right, and then, maybe, just maybe, a head-on collision with a tree. Or pond. Death by exposure, drowning, all in a night’s bar hopping.
KK got wrapped up in drinking young. Nature and nurture. He’s more than just a smart guy, and he holds a boyhood with no interest in school, a whipper snapper in math, and alas, that teacher who wacked him on the head many times while he struggled to do division. That was grade three.
Imagine, years later, he’s working as a CNA, and lo and behold, this monster teacher is in memory care, in need of bathing and all that. She called him “my sweet Kelly.” All those math division wacking sessions long dust to the wind roiling her Merrill brain. From a sadistic teacher to a broken-brained old lady dying in a care facility.
So when we traversed this town, one he moved away from decades ago, the lights of nostalgia and nightmares came pulsating out. He knows every nook and cranny, every business that was, every place where he hung out at after ditching school. And the bars.
So when the fuzz came buzzing into our Pine Ridge Diner, more than just flashbacks were surfacing. He, KK, had been fighting the law all his life, with a total of 10 years behind bars. He shook his head and laughed.
Since I was the accused perpetrator — photographer — I calmly dealt with the cops and their stupidity. Five or six cop vehicles, and big bearded bruisers holding onto their flak jackets and holsters.
Yeah, the illogic of having cops tell me I should have knocked on the guy’s door at 8:30 am on a Saturday, well, this is America. Imagine I shot 130 pics in a two-hour period. Courthouse, churches, cool architecture, funky yards, Trump and Go Brandon signs next to a white cross, you know, all that artsy fartsy stuff. The thought experiment is this: So, a photographer has to knock on what, a dozen, two dozen, more doors? Ask permission to shoot a man standing in front of the old broken-down home?
I’ve talked with a few people about this, and hands down they say this is absurd, and then all the photos they took in places like Juarez or throughout the world. Kids and chickens. Three-legged dogs next to a woman hanging out clothes. Vietnam or Venice.
America. You will have the cops come blazing in to interrogate you about photo shoots. We are talking shoot and dash.
Yeah, the guy’s got a rough background, i.e., criminal background. But still, an ex-con was yelling and spitting that he wanted me arrested. A 66-year-old guy from Oregon.
America — Friendliest place on the planet.
A sidenote to this is I just opened up my phone call log, and there is a message from the investigating officer. He wanted to let me know that when we drove off by him standing with the accuser, it was the pissed off father who returned back and wanted to apologize for his threats and bullshit. He was, again, Duck Dynasty addled, and no matter how many people reading this think I should have or could have might have done this or not done that, it’s all in a day’s work for me, and while the dramatic overtones may sound as if I am frazzled, well, I am not.
America. Within thirty minutes of the guy’s threats and his bullshit filming me with his toy phone, well, he apologized, and wanted the cop to let me know he was just overprotective and that there was a past, that is, some past incidents with his two daughters. I just listened to the cop’s message, two days later.
America. Triggered. Triggers. Trigger locks. Unlocked trigger locks. Rapid-fire triggers. Triggers all lined up while the weeds take over the yard and the Walmart shit piles up.
America. Wisconsin. Shooting ranges all over the place. Golf courses and shooting ranges. And a shitload of shit factories, that is, dairies.
America. Dairies and fields of GMO corn and soy. You gotta get the cows fed. Shit factories, those dairy cows. America. What to do with the shit? America. America Don’t Take No Shit from Anyone (bumper sticker I saw on the highway).
America. Hair triggers and trigger brains. Lots of shit.
Graveyards and dairies. So, some of those 53 Merrill haunts are gone, turned into chiropractor offices. One’s a florist. Old, sagging, boarded up. You have to look closely for a bright beacon coming from a foggy window. “No Coors Served Here!”
Those cemeteries are loaded with German and Polish names. Wisconsin, the state with the most beer:

Hoverson describes these breweries in all their diversity, from the earliest enterprises to the few surviving stalwarts to the modern breweries reviving Wisconsin’s reputation as the place to find not just the most beer but the best.
Within the larger history, every brewery has its story, and Hoverson gives each its due, investigating the circumstances that meant success or failure and describing in engaging detail the people, the technology, the marketing, and the government relations that delivered Wisconsin’s beer from grain to glass.
America. Americana: things associated with the culture and history of America, especially the United States.
This is part one of KK’s magical mystery re-tour of Merrill, the roots of where the hell started for him. I’ve been in small towns in Mass. and Delaware and New Jersey, for sure, and the bars and pubs and reckless legacy of cops owning booze joints, all of that, it’s been taught to me early. As a traveler. I’ve seen the idiocy of men and women plastered in Edinburgh and Dublin. And in Hamburg and Munich.
Limey monsters in British Honduras and now Belize, slamming drinks and spewing the shit of military men high on rum and beer. Yeah, one of the worst times was when my former wife and I were in Athens, and the four Brits — military on R & R — in the room adjoining went from toasting and hoisting to singing and yelling to actually beating the shit out of each other, the walls pounding, some of the pictures in our hotel room crashing down.
KK isn’t that kind of a drinker, but the drinking started for a dark, hidden reason, and that too will be explored in part two. Booze, meth, fentanyl, the whole nine yards of America.
Small towns in rural America are shuttering some of their businesses. Farms going belly up. Big bruiser Germanic men, brothers and fathers, working the manure and the milking machines. Endless winds and chill and snow and rain. Hot as hell in the summer. A lot of flat land. Marshy land and swamps all over.
Guns and butter, Wisconsin. America. One kid with higher ambitions, locked into a mold for a while, a product of father beatings as a kid, beatings by teachers, the kid, KK, always throwing in to protect the bullied fat boys. Wisconsin. Ten years behind bars in more than a dozen shitholes, from county lock-ups to state correctional institutions.
KK fought the law, and the law waylaid him.
I met KK a year ago when he tracked me down via email. Reading my stuff over at DV, and alas, I learned about his River Falls life, his wife of 41 years, struggling with small-cell lung cancer. And she eventually succumbed to the cancer. More about that in parts two and three.
“How did you meet him?” some have asked. “You are flying all the way to Wisconsin for eight days to see a fellow you never met, some guy with a shady past?”
Yeah, and that’s also in parts two and three. Why I came, and what transpired, again, more microcosm of the flagging United States of Go Find Bradon and Trump Derangement Syndrome . . . America, my first time in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Okay, then, will this Wisconsin law go after those on house arrest probation, still on paper? Kelly, weigh in please!
Eric Kasper is a professor of political science at UW-Eau Claire. He told WPR’s “Wisconsin Today” the examples written into law raise questions about potentially chilling free speech, leaving unclear what kind of speech is prohibited and what isn’t.
“The speech itself in a public forum would have a broad amount of protection on the First Amendment,” Kasper said. “The law itself comes down to: When there has been a claim of some sort of discrimination, or there’s begun a prosecution for criminal conduct, can the statements here be used as examples of that biased motivation or that biased intent?”
Kasper said there is a “very real possibility” of court cases challenging definitions like this.
“If you’re going to see that put to the test, it would be in some sort of case that arises because there’s been a claim of discrimination,” Kasper said. “It raises the question of: Do (certain statements) rise to the level of proving discriminatory intent … and do they have the chilling effect on expression — that people will be afraid to say things that would otherwise be protected speech because it could be used against them to prove some other underlying conduct?”

“To enter directly into the conflict in Ukraine would be tantamount to starting World War III,” says Colonel Wilkerson, former COS to Colin Powell.

The catastrophic Russian incursion in Ukraine seems never-ending. Seven months ago in February, however, most Western policymakers and the intelligence community could not have anticipated the continuation of such full-blown warfare between the two sovereign states. Even as Moscow launched its initial attack in February, no one believed the event would take the devastating course the world has since witnessed.
With the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the United States reluctant to commit ground troops in Ukraine and the West’s multiple failed attempts at brokering a peace deal, Kyiv is confronting a remarkably tough situation. While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy displays a firm commitment to defending his motherland, Russian President Vladimir Putin‘s aggression appears to heighten daily, as illustrated by his recent nuclear threat and ruthless land grab.
The international community, including both warring states, has been pondering when and how this cataclysmic conflict could be brought to an end.
JAPAN Forward recently took advantage of an opportunity to interview (virtually) Lawrence Wilkerson, retired US Army Colonel and former chief of staff to United States Secretary of State Colin Powell. Colonel Wilkerson shared his reflections on this and other matters contributing to the critical security crisis our world faces today.
Colonel Wilkerson’s military career spans over 30 years, from voluntary service in Vietnam to deployment in United States Navy’s Pacific Command in South Korea, Japan, and Hawaii. He currently works as a defense analyst and distinguished professor of government and public policy at the College of William Mary.

What is Vladimir Putin’s ultimate motive? How will this war play out in the coming weeks, and will it ever end?
While no one can truly knowhis true motives ー other than Putin himself ー there is reason to think that, yes, what he has wanted since 24 February, when he launched the invasion, was the oblasts in eastern Ukraine where most of the Russian-speaking people reside. However, by taking this specific action, which the majority of the world views as illegal under international law, Putin has solidified his pariah status within the world community.
Even China and India have backed away from this action. China’s policy has always been that territorial integrity and the accompanying sovereignty are sacrosanct in international law. It is, after all, Beijing’s principal argument for its “ownership” of Taiwan.
Nonetheless, if the West is wise ー admittedly a huge “if” ー led by the United States and other long-standing NATO members, it will move to diplomacy with Russia and halt this needless carnage in the heart of Europe. Even if it has to drag Zelenskyy kicking and screaming to the negotiating table.
There are far more important challenges in the world today than Ukraine. And the conflict there is diverting attention from, and indeed increasing the existential nature of, two of these challenges: nuclear weapons and the evolving climate.
Russia has indicated its willingness to use the nuclear option, if necessary, to protect its perceived territorial integrity. Is Russia’s use of tactical nuclear weapons plausible?
No, it’s not. I won’t rule out such an insane action if Putin senses he might fall from power if he doesn’t “win” in the Ukraine conflict. But I don’t believe it will happen.
The very fact that it could happen, however, should sober all those in charge of the Western governments, as well as the Duma members in Moscow, and all Russian citizens.
Some experts, noticeably John J Mearsheimer, have accused the West of fostering a hostile environment since 2008, eventually leading to Putin’s aggression. What is your take on this view?
John is fundamentally correct. The reckless expansion of NATO, started by US President Bill Clinton and continued by every president afterward, was the principal reason for Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
The president whom I directly served, George W Bush, even traveled to Tbilisi, Georgia, and in public there declared that Georgia would be a member of NATO in the future. This declaration was pure idiocy and extremely unwise.
You will recall that Putin immediately took military action. In 2021, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Russia still retained direct control over some of this territory.
Putin cited the “Kosovo precedent” to justify Russia’s full-fledged support for the independence of Donetsk and Luhansk, and said the United States created a “nuclear precedent” by bombing Japan. Are the misdeeds in American history backfiring in recent years?
To a degree supported by history, yes, Putin does have a point on both issues.
First, the Kosovo precedent ー again the fault of President Bill Clinton ー stands out as a flagrant slap in the face to Moscow. Moreover, Kosovo is little more than a basket case of crime and corruption today and hardly an example of state-building success by the US, NATO, or the United Nations.
The Serbs virtually own the northern portion of Kosovo and the unrest there could erupt in major bloodshed at any time. Russia is a major supporter of those Serbs.
As to the end of WWII, there is clear archival evidence that the United States’ use of two nuclear weapons, on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, might have been unnecessary to the surrender of Japan. That the weapons were primarily a demonstration to intimidate Stalin and stop his forces from going any further toward the English Channel in 1945, looms large in some historians’ minds as well.
Regardless of how one feels about such comparisons, Washington has very little, if any, empathy for other world leaders and their populations, particularly if we have declared them our enemies. Often [Washington’s] perception of events is their reality. But we rarely recognize that fact.
Even if such perceptions are untrue, or are more complex than people’s beliefs, they still color majorly others’ perceptions of America.

Some experts warn that Russia’s incursion in Ukraine encourages like-minded regimes to take similar actions. What lessons are other similar regimes (that is, North Korea, Iran, China) acquiring from the Ukraine crisis?
I don’t think the Ukraineconflict encourages any other state to embark on such an endeavor, despite the disaster it is for Moscow. If anything, it likely discourages such actions.
North Korea, as evidenced by its missile firings such as the most recent ones over Japan, is seeking attention ー such as it received under US President Donald Trump. Since then, North Korea has been largely ignored.
Kim Jong-un cannot tolerate being ignored, so he is doing all he can to gain the world’s attention again, particularly Washington’s.
Iran’s government is perhaps fighting for its life at the moment after the brutal death of the young Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, at government hands. Besides, Iran has not executed an unprovoked attack on any state since the 1979 revolution established the present state.
The United States has refused to commit any ground troops in Ukraine and take any direct military actions in the conflict. NATO has shown equal reluctance to commit its armed forces. What impact does this have on America’s traditional allies in East Asia, particularly Taiwan?
I don’t believe it has any impact other than to convince them at the least of the pragmatism of the present government in Washington. To enter directly into the conflict in Ukraine would be tantamount to starting World War III.
US actions in Ukraine are pragmatic, not reluctant. In fact, short of sending its own military ー a surefire way to start WWIII ー the United States has held almost nothing back, particularly dollars and high-tech armaments.
Again, nothing that would threaten Russia directly, such as long-range bombers, but much else. It’s a balancing act to avoid threatening Russia directly while at the same time giving Ukraine enough to preclude Russia’s achieving its objectives inside Ukraine.
Taipei should be pleased because, like not provoking Russia to widen the war in Europe, Taipei does not want the US to provoke China to use military force to compel it to do Beijing’s wishes. There the similarities fade because Taiwan is not Ukraine and would be much more difficult than Ukraine if China were to use military force. People who compare the two situations know little about either.
Given the European Union’s failed attempt at brokering peace, and NATO’s failure to prevent interstate war, are supranational entities becoming obsolete? What security apparatus should liberal democratic states in East Asia strive for?
Not necessarily. It’s probably more accurate to say “certain present alliances, in some instances like NATO.”
The United Nations too is bordering on ineffectiveness, and that organization desperately needs to be reformed dramatically if it is to regain some usefulness.
I believe, however, that the Japan-US security relationship still has great utility for both countries.
The US-ROK alliance needs readjusting somewhat. For example, the ROK armed forces can take care of their country quite adequately. So there needs to be serious discussion of just why US troops remain on the Peninsula.
Finally, the effectiveness of new groups such as the QUAD is questionable. They seem more like weak efforts to threaten China than meaningful security groupings.

Will the upcoming US midterm elections in November and presidential election two years after change America’s current stance on Ukraine?
Here it is anyone’s guess. It depends on which political party’s candidate is elected president [in 2024] and which political party controls the US Congress, particularly the Senate. If my party, the Republicans, achieve both the White House and [both chambers of] Congress, I believe the US could be in deep trouble.
With the present Democratic Party, there is no viable presidential candidate whom I can see on the horizon [for the 2024 election]. And it’s difficult to say whether or not that party will remain in control of the Senate in the midterm election. I think they will lose control of the House.
Whoever controls the government will determine which direction the US takes. And that is largely a new phenomenon for America because, since 1945, both political parties had largely pursued the same security and foreign policy.

Melting Pot? Nah, Jew Pot!
“Wisconsin should reject any effort that codifies a framework that allows similar enforcement or censorship against students, faculty, journalists, or advocates exercising their First Amendment rights,” the letter read.
German: ~40.5% (Widely distributed, but highly concentrated in eastern Wisconsin and Milwaukee)
Irish: ~10.9% (Notable populations in Beloit, Fond du Lac, and Sturgeon Bay)
Polish: ~9.3% (Major communities in Milwaukee and Stevens Point)
Norwegian & Scandinavian: ~8.5% (More concentrated in the western and southern parts of the state)
Other European Roots: Significant communities of English, Italian, French, Dutch (Sheboygan area), and Belgian (Door Peninsula area) descent.
Hispanic/Latino: Growing rapidly (up over 380% in recent decades), now making up about 7.6% to 9% of the population.
Asian: Making up about 3-4% of the population, with the state boasting one of the largest Hmong populations in the United States, alongside significant Indian and Southeast Asian communities.
A second look at American Primeval, and boy oh boy, I was itching to take a five gallon gasoline can, full, to the local Mormon Church . . . Empty parking lot 95 percent of the time
On January 24, leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, more commonly known as the Mormon Church, penned a statement condemning the Netflix series American Primeval.
This historical fiction depicts the Mountain Meadows Massacre of 1857, as well as broader hostilities between the US government and Mormons at Salt Lake City during the Utah War of 1857–58.
The church has criticised the series for its portrayal of the Mormon prophet Brigham Young, who it claims is “egregiously mischaracterized as a villainous, violent fanatic”. It also says the series
inaccurately portrays [the Mountain Meadows Massacre] as reflective of a whole faith group, [when] the Church has long acknowledged and condemned this horrific tragedy.
The reality of the massacre was arguably even grimmer than what American Primeval shows. Contrary to what is depicted in the series, there were no adult survivors. Official sources state up to 150 people were killed. Only 17 children under the age of six were spared, who were then discreetly adopted into Mormon families.
There are about 17 million Mormons worldwide. Of these, an estimated 157,000 are in Australia (about 0.6% of the population) compared with almost seven million in the United States (about 2% of the population).
High Pressure: Young adults often feel immense family and cultural pressure to serve, leaving little room to question or opt out without facing social stigma or feelings of guilt.

But what about religious tolerance? My faculty mentor at seminary once told me the shortest book in the library was Examples of Religious Tolerance, and it was mostly blank. He had a point. I grew up in a country that prided itself on religious tolerance. On paper, it was mostly true. In reality it was mostly myth. Here is one example:
In the storybook version I learned in school, the Pilgrims came to America aboard the Mayflower in search of religious freedom in 1620. The Puritans soon followed, for the same reason. Ever since these religious dissidents arrived at their shining “city upon a hill,” as their governor John Winthrop called it, millions from around the world have done the same, coming to an America where they found a welcome melting pot in which everyone was free to practise their own faith.
The real story of religion in America’s past is an often awkward, frequently embarrassing and occasionally bloody tale that most high-school texts paper over or ignore entirely.
From the earliest arrival of Europeans on America’s shores, religion has often been a cudgel, used to discriminate, suppress and even kill the foreign, the “heretic” and the “unbeliever” — including the “heathen” natives already there. Moreover, while it is true that the vast majority of early-generation colonial Americans were Christian, the pitched battles between various Protestant sects and, more explosively, between Protestants and Catholics, presented an unavoidable contradiction to the widely held notion that America is a “Christian nation.”
In an overlooked bit of inconvenient history: the initial encounter between Europeans in the future United States came with the establishment of a French Huguenot colony in 1564 at Fort Caroline (near modern Jacksonville, Florida). More than half a century before the Mayflower set sail, French pilgrims had come to America in search of religious freedom.
The Spanish had other ideas. In 1565, they established a forward operating base at St. Augustine and proceeded to wipe out the Fort Caroline colony. The Spanish commander wrote to the Spanish King Philip II that he had “hanged all those we had found in [Fort Caroline] because…they were scattering the odious Lutheran doctrine in these Provinces.”
Thanks to the likes of Unitarian John Adams and Unitarian-friendly Thomas Jefferson, religious freedom eventually, over strong objection, made it into the Constitution, but unfortunately not into American behaviour. Poor Joseph Smith, founder of the Latter Day Saints, was hounded out of Western New York, tarred and feathered in Missouri and murdered in his Illinois jail cell with his brother. Of course, this isn’t just an American phenomenon. The religious “other”, in modern times at least, has always had a target on their back. Ask any Muslim in any “civilised” western country, including New Zealand.
It is my supposition that religion is not the cause of war or intolerance as it creates chaos. Obviously, it is, has been, and no doubt will continue to be corrupted from its original purpose to create order. But in a world with billions of people who are self-defined as religious, those who believe that violence is the will of their god and that the murder of those who believe differently is a holy act are a small, hate-filled minority.
Peace, justice and freedom are the highest aspirations for all religions.

“As a public university, Ball State cannot fire an employee for protected speech made as a private citizen,” the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana, which sued on the administrator’s behalf, said in a statement this week announcing the settlement.
Employers in several states have also settled with or reinstated workers.

Political Research Associates documented cases where TPUSA chapters hosted or aligned with Nick Fuentes and his white nationalist followers. TPUSA severed ties when public exposure threatened its reputation, but the repeated associations revealed how far Kirk was willing to go in pursuit of influence.
The mainstream press tracked this trajectory. The Guardian reported that Kirk’s rhetoric increasingly mirrored white supremacist and authoritarian themes, while campus watchdog groups chronicled repeated incidents of racist, homophobic, and transphobic speech at TPUSA events (Guardian; AAUP). This was not about “a few bad apples.” It was a culture, nurtured by leadership, that normalized bigotry and dressed it up as “truth-telling.”
The evidence remains overwhelming: Kirk and TPUSA did not need to wear hoods or wave Confederate flags to advance the logic of white supremacy. By denying systemic racism, vilifying movements for justice, and legitimizing extremists, Kirk and his organization reinforced the architecture of racial dominance in America. That was the through line of his political project. He positioned himself as a defender of liberty, but the liberty he envisioned was conditional—anchored in whiteness, Christianity, and exclusion. His legacy is not simply conservatism. It is a record of advancing ideas and practices that aligned with white supremacy, even if he never wore the label himself.
The deepest irony of Kirk’s legacy came in the manner of his death. In 2023, he declared that “it’s worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights,” framing gun deaths as a tragic but acceptable price for liberty (Wikipedia). Two years later, he was killed by gunfire at one of his own public events (AP News). His own words came back in the most devastating way, embodying the very cost he had justified. For critics, this was not just irony but a brutal illustration of how the normalization of preventable violence eventually consumes even its defenders. He spent his career denying systemic racism while building a movement that normalized bigotry and courted extremists. At the same time, he insisted that preventable deaths were an acceptable cost of preserving the Second Amendment. In the end, the violence he rationalized and the racial fear he amplified converged in his own fate. “The performers, innovators, military heroes, and everyday Americans showcased here represent the very best of who we are, and the boundless opportunity ahead,” Krach said, calling the gathering in the nation’s capital “a moment for America to come together.”

The Military Academy at West Point cannot require civilian faculty members to obtain approval before using their West Point affiliation to speak to outside audiences about their areas of expertise, a federal judge ruled on Tuesday.
The academy also cannot prevent a professor, Tim Bakken, from expressing his opinions to students in the classroom on subjects he teaches, Judge Cathy Seibel of U.S. District Court in White Plains, N.Y., said in the ruling.
Professor Bakken, who has taught at West Point since 2000, had sued the academy, saying that its policies had violated the First Amendment. He has spoken and written frequently and at times critically about the U.S. military, including West Point, his lawsuit notes.
Judge Seibel issued a preliminary injunction blocking both the approval requirement and the restrictions on Professor Bakken’s speech.
She said that the government had offered no real justification for limiting his ability to express opinions in the classroom. She said the rule was “nonsensical if the mission is to prepare the nation’s future military officers.”
“For genuine strength and leadership to result,” Judge Seibel wrote, “cadets must be exposed to a variety of viewpoints and trained to think critically about them.”

The judge noted in her decision that the policies at West Point followed an executive order, “Restoring America’s Fighting Force,” signed by President Trump a week after he took office. It was aimed at Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs within the military and also barred the military from promoting certain “un-American, divisive, discriminatory, radical, extremist and irrational theories,” the ruling noted.
Professor Bakken, 68, who obtained his law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School, is the longest-serving law professor in the military academy’s history, his suit says. He is also the author of a 2020 book, “The Cost of Loyalty: Dishonesty, Hubris and Failure in the U.S. Military.”
The requirement that faculty members obtain prior approval when using their West Point affiliation to speak to outside audiences lists examples like journal publications, media interviews, social media posts and podcasts, according to a copy of the policy attached to the lawsuit.
As for restrictions in classrooms, Professor Bakken said in court papers that before the directive, he routinely shared his views on topics he taught in class. He no longer does so, he says. In court papers, he cited questions he received from cadets during the fall 2025 semester seeking his opinion on whether the death penalty is effective or about the value of the movement for deinstitutionalization of mentally ill people.

Many of the patients I treat in my primary care clinic in Chicago live with combinations of conditions like diabetes, cancer and dementia or asthma, high blood pressure and obesity. Chronic disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., and treating it costs billions of dollars a year.
Yet, most of our health is determined outside of clinics and hospitals. I can prescribe medication and make dietary recommendations until I’m blue in the face, but it won’t matter if my patients can’t afford the pills or access the healthy food. I can send an asthma patient home with multiple inhalers, but that only does so much when the air outside is toxic. Social and environmental determinants of health, like air quality, insurance coverage and food access, often have a much greater impact on my patients’ chronic disease outcomes than my medical care.
Climate change is another determinant of health. Anyone who has experienced oppressive heat, breathed wildfire smoke or noticed their allergies worsening every year can appreciate this. People with chronic disease are among the most vulnerable to the climate’s health impacts. This is why the recent repeal of what is known as the “endangerment finding“ is a step in the wrong direction when it comes to improving chronic disease outcomes in the U.S. and globally.
The endangerment finding was a determination made by the Environmental Protection Agency in 2009 that six greenhouse gases threatened public health and welfare by worsening climate change. In a move that defied decades of established scientific consensus, the present-day EPA rescinded this finding. It basically said that the Environmental Protection Agency has no business protecting human health from what the World Health Organization has called “the single biggest threat facing humanity.”
An EFF analysis of millions of searches of Flock Safety automated license plate reader (ALPR) data by police has uncovered a troubling pattern: in the absence of a warrant requirement to search ALPR databases, law enforcement agencies have moved beyond specific investigations to use these surveillance networks for virtually any whim.
Our findings suggest that the absence of a warrant requirement has fostered a culture of unrestricted access to sensitive location data, allowing agencies to leverage that data beyond the scope of specific criminal investigations.
As a refresher: Law enforcement agencies lease or purchase camera systems from Flock Safety and then mount them by the side of the road and at intersections to document every vehicle that passes, including the plate, make, model, color and distinguishing characteristics, along with the date, time and location of where it was seen.
Law enforcement’s talking points—often scripted by the company itself—trumpet their role in solving high-stakes crimes. But the data reveals a different story. What they’re not saying is that ALPRs are also frequently used for extremely low-level investigations, such as verifying whether a student lives within a particular school zone. In some cases, police have even used this tech to conduct employment background checks and investigations into loud music complaints. Recently, a motorcyclist was even targeted for simply holding a cell phone while riding.
The reach of this ALPR surveillance is amplified by the nature of the indiscriminate sharing these technologies encourage. Most agencies choose to share broadly, often as part of a nationwide pool, making it common for a single city’s system to be searched hundreds of thousands of times each month. By analyzing these “network audit logs,” privacy advocates and journalists have uncovered evidence of the technology being used to surveil protesters, abortion-seekers, immigrants, and even ethnic Roma populations.
While these high-profile abuses are shocking, the more mundane uses are also problematic, signaling a massive, unchecked mission creep that has turned an alleged “crime-fighting” tool into a universal tracker of everyone’s movements.

Brazil’s government announced Wednesday that it will invest $75 million in the BR-319 highway cutting through the Amazon rainforest, a project environmentalists say could accelerate deforestation and worsen climate change.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s administration simultaneously announced an environmental protection plan to safeguard the forest from potential impacts from the highway, which connects the northern states of Amazonas and Rondonia with the rest of Brazil.
“From an environmental standpoint, it will be the most modern road in the world,” Lula said during a ceremony in Amazonas state, accompanied by Environment Minister João Paulo Capobianco.
“Any foreigner who comes here to weigh in on the climate issue, we will show what we’ve done here,” Lula said.
The BR-319 highway was inaugurated in 1976 but remains largely unpaved. It cuts through the Amazon rainforest and reaches Manaus, the Amazon’s largest city, with more than 2 million residents. The road runs alongside the Madeira River — one of the Amazon River’s main tributaries that has suffered from droughts that disrupt cargo transport.
Scientific research has shown that opening new roads in the rainforest drives deforestation, spurring the spread of illegal side roads. A 2014 study published in the journal Biological Conservation found that 95% of forest clearing occurs within 5.5 kilometers (3.4 miles) of roads. For every 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) of official road, there are roughly 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) of unofficial roads.
Marina Silva, a former environment minister in Lula’s administration, said during a Senate hearing last year that deforestation in the BR-319 area surged immediately after roadworks were announced. She resigned in April to run for Congress.
Marcio Astrini, executive director of Climate Observatory, said the government is bypassing due process in implementing the measures to safeguard environmental protections. A plan to prevent deforestation along the highway, he said, should have been discussed, approved and implemented before paving began — not at the same time as is happening now.

According to Whatcom Dream, 45% of households in Whatcom County fall below a budget that covers just the essentials of housing, childcare, food, transportation, and healthcare. High interest loans, unstable housing, limited access to credit, and daily financial obstacles all add up.
“It’s like a snowball effect,” said Yousef Tirhi, a peer financial coach for Western’s Merriman Financial Literacy Program. “Not paying your credit card often will get you a lower credit score, a lower credit score will get you worse loans, and it goes on.” It can really hurt someone who’s already struggling financially, he said.
These structures aren’t accidental; they’re built on profit models that depend on people staying desperate.
“They’re charging crazy amounts of fees for accounts with low balances, or if you go over your credit limit, you’re going to get charged a penalty or fee,” said Tirhi, “It’s just kind of, you know, hurting America.”
For many students, this struggle is personal.
“I work part-time and budget carefully, but it still feels like I’m always one step away from falling behind,” said India Sanborn, a psychology student at Western. “You try to be responsible, but the system doesn’t make it easy.”
The less you have, the more you pay. The boots theory perfectly illustrates this. The concept argues that poverty is expensive because low-income individuals are forced to buy cheap, low-quality items – for instance, poor work boots – that must be replaced more frequently. This is compared to someone who can afford to buy one pair of high-quality shoes that would last longer, spending less in the process.
America’s broken system punishes people not for how they manage their lives, but for the circumstances they can’t escape.
Hidden fees, convenience charges, and add-on costs disproportionately impact low-income households, creating a regressive “poverty penalty”. Because these costs are flat rates rather than percentages, they consume a much larger share of a limited budget, making it harder to escape the cycle of financial struggle.

According to the poll, nearly 75% of Democrats oppose military aid to Israel, up from 45% just three years ago. Nearly half of Democrats said the party supports Israel too much.
And if that weren’t enough, an NBC News poll found that 57 percent of Democrats view Israel unfavorably. Shortly after October 7, that number was just 35 percent. A Quinnipiac University poll found that 62 percent of Democrats believe the United States is “too supportive” of Israel.

It is important to emphasize that most of the Israelis interviewed for this article are Ashkenazi Jews — members of the country’s ruling hegemony. Many hold dual citizenship, often obtained through European ancestry tied to families who survived the Holocaust. Those who do not have a second passport have nonetheless been able to create exit routes through higher education, professional mobility, or a spouse’s citizenship.
At the same time, it is also crucial to note that large segments of Israel’s Jewish population, mostly Jews of non-Ashkenazi origin, lack any realistic option to emigrate. This group, which constitutes roughly half of Israel’s Jewish population, consists largely of descendants of Jews brought to Israel by state authorities in 1949–50 from the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. In Israel’s early years, they were used as pawns to boost the Jewish demographic share of the population, and have since been subjected to persistent and well-documented social and economic discrimination.

Is it possible for child sex abuse victims to truly love their molesters? Enough to continue wanting to see them years after? Even with their wife and kids there?
Two experts who took the stand this past week in Rabbi Daniel Greer’s criminal trial in state Superior Court to try to explain the complicated psychology of sexual abuse differed in their conclusions.
Greer is facing charges of sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor.
He repeatedly asked why Mirlis continued to return to the Yeshiva of New Haven, where Rabbi Greer presided over religious ceremonies, almost monthly up until about 2014, despite arguments with his wife that lasted most of the two-hour car rides from New Jersey.

In presenting the case for the defense Friday morning, Dow put David Mantell on the stand. Mantell has been evaluating kids for the Connecticut Department of Children & Families since 1976, said those visits struck him as unusual too.
“I have never seen that pattern,” he said.
Dow asked if Mantell knew about any research that could explain why a child sex abuse victim would keep going back, to “even have meals and participate in services led by that individual.”
Mantell said that he couldn’t find anything, after about that 50 hours of searching databases for “post-abuse patterns,” both within families and institutions.
“I did not find any research confirming that experience had been identified by any others or a single case example, which is sometimes given in the professional literature,” Mantell said.
“What I found i my research is an occasional reference to a small number of children abused in institutional settings reporting an ongoing sexual relationship, so that [at that point] it is mutual. It’s a very tiny percentage of the cases,” he went on. “But there was not one in which the student leaves the institutional setting, has no more contact and then returns and resumes without a sexual relationship between them.”
Mantell added that would also run counter to a widely accepted concept of “avoidance,” where many survivors try to avoid anything that might remind them of the sexual assault.
But on cross-examination, Mantell admitted that part of the reason he might not have found anything is that there are not many research papers at all about child sexual abuse within Judaism. An Orthodox Jew himself, he said that the research is “delayed” compared to the extensive studies done within Christian parishes.
Karen Roberg, a state prosecutor, also asked Mantell if there might be understandable reasons why the relationship would continue. Do sex abuse abuse survivors ever “love” the perpetrator? she asked.
Mantell said he’s definitely seen that, especially when another family member’s behind the molestation.
“They love their parent or sibling or grandparent who’s an abuser, despite knowing that they’re being improperly treated in so many of those cases,” he said.
Mantelll added that it can be more complicated when sexual abuse happens in other settings, like a boarding school.
“I think children like to be be treated and regarded positively,” he said. “As a general statement, I think children want affection.”

Other experts who testified for the state earlier in the week said they didn’t see a discrepancy.
Lisa Melillo, a school psychologist in Monroe who interviews children when they first report sexual abuse to law enforcement, said survivors often say they feel “love and respect and loyalty” to the perpetrator.
They can see the perpetrator as “an essential person in their life,” even as they wish the sexual abuse would stop, she said.
“Oftentimes, the abuser is well known to the child,” Melillo said. “We think about ‘stranger danger’ from a random person, but more often than not, it’s a person known to them, who has access to them. That can be a parental figure.
“The sex abuse, in itself, is just one aspect of a relationship,” she went on. “It’s not defining their whole relationship. That’s where loyalty comes in.”
“Participating at a christening or a bris — being invited by the complainant to attend — would that be consistent” with those feelings? Dow asked.
“I think, as I testified before, this could be an indication of how much love and respect they have, even though there’s been an abusive part,” Melillo said.
“Or not?” Dow asked. “There could be no abusive relationship and a valid invitation?”
“It could be,” Melillo admitted.
“How about an honored position, holding a baby?” Dow asked.
“Is that consistent with a valid claim?” Melillo wondered aloud. “Sometimes a person can have love and respect for their abuser: It’s only one aspect of their relationship.”
Many victims of childhood sexual abuse wait years to report what happened — especially when that occurs in an insular community.
Forensic psychologist Gavriel Fagan — an Orthodox Jew who works with other Orthodox Jews who experience abuse — made that case Wednesday in the criminal trial of accused child-rapist Rabbi Daniel Greer.
Fagin was one of two forensic psychologists who testified on day three of Greer’s trial in Superior Court on Church Street, addressing a central issue in the case.
Greer faces charges of sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor.
Fagin argued that it would have been extra difficult for a yeshiva student who’s been abused to turn in his rabbi over to the police.
Prosecutors brought those two experts — who have each interviewed hundreds of people who said they were molested as minors — in to explain why Eliyahu Mirlis waited a decade before coming forward with allegations that Greer raped him repeatedly from 2002 to 2005.
Even Mirlis’s wife, Shira, testified on Wednesday morning that she’d often been “confused” that her husband couldn’t cut Rabbi Greer out of his life for so many years after the abuse.
When they made near-monthly trips to New Haven, she said, she fought with him the whole two-hour ride, trying to show him the whole community was “twisted.” When he let Greer hold their firstborn son in a circumcision ceremony, she said, she found his presence “very upsetting.” And whenever she urged her husband to go to the police, she said, he shut down the conversation.

Israeli media is now openly reporting that Netanyahu privately acknowledges Israel’s ability to influence Trump has become limited. Channel 13 reportedly described growing difficulty in steering the U.S. president as disagreements emerge over Iran and regional escalation.
At the same time, pressure is growing inside Israel itself. Talk of early elections continues to circulate as Netanyahu faces growing anger over Gaza, the hostages, the economy, judicial battles, and Israel’s deepening international isolation.
Which raises a dangerous question:
What happens when a political project that spent decades building enormous influence in Washington suddenly realises the man at the centre of the empire may no longer be fully controllable?
Because this is bigger than Netanyahu.
There are entire ecosystems tied to Israel’s power structure: lobbyists, billionaire donors, think tanks, intelligence networks, media figures, evangelical blocs, political operatives, defence industries, and ideological hardliners who spent decades making sure Washington and Tel Aviv moved almost as one.
And now suddenly there are signs of friction.
And if Trump’s ego starts getting in the way, what happens next?
Because Trump has always been obsessed with the image of himself as the ultimate dealmaker. The man who brought peace where others failed. The leader who could walk into impossible situations and force outcomes nobody else could.
He has spent years bragging about bringing “peace” to the Middle East, preventing wars, and succeeding where the political establishment supposedly failed.
Which is why another endless regional war with Iran may clash with the legacy he wants attached to his name.
Trump does not just want to dominate. He wants to be remembered.
Do they try pulling him back into line through donor pressure, media pressure, and political pressure?
Do they surround him with more compliant foreign policy figures?
Do they intensify fear around Iran until confrontation becomes politically unavoidable?
Because we know what follows that path:
more fear, more division, more paranoia, more manipulation, more pressure to control public opinion and suppress dissent.
Do they work around Trump entirely through Congress, intelligence institutions, and military networks?
Or are we starting to see something else emerge: The early stages of Netanyahu being quietly sacrificed in order to preserve the larger system itself?
Because systems of power survive by isolating blame once the political cost becomes too high.
And after Gaza, the political cost has become enormous.
That does not mean the machinery disappears. Sometimes it just changes faces.
Which is why the growing discussion around early elections matters. Not because Israel’s underlying structures suddenly transform overnight, but because parts of the establishment may recognise Netanyahu himself is becoming strategically radioactive internationally.
Or do some factions quietly recognise something even bigger:
that perception management after Gaza failed catastrophically, and that the old model of limitless escalation backed by automatic Western legitimacy may no longer be sustainable forever?
Because that is the deeper fracture sitting underneath all of this.
Some will probably believe the answer is to pull back strategically, soften rhetoric, and repair legitimacy before the damage becomes irreversible.
Others will likely conclude the opposite: that international outrage changes nothing, legitimacy no longer matters, and overwhelming force should continue regardless of global disgust. That power alone is enough. They may go all in.
Of course, this is also Trump. His politics constantly swing between escalation and restraint, threats and dealmaking, ego and calculation. Today’s friction could disappear tomorrow if his interests, image or alliances shift again.
Especially now, with fresh U.S. strikes on southern Iran happening in the middle of negotiations, raising the same old question again: who actually benefits every time diplomacy starts getting close?
But the fact that visible cracks are appearing at all inside what was once treated as an unshakeable alignment is significant.
Because once a movement stops needing moral approval, raw power becomes the only language left. And once that happens, the line between restraint and brutality starts disappearing.
And perhaps the most fucked up part of all this is that the thing potentially slowing a wider catastrophe may not be morality, international law or humanitarian concern.
It may simply be competing egos inside the empire itself.
Target: Mohammad Mosaddegh, the democratically elected Prime Minister of Iran.
Reason: Mosaddegh had nationalized the British-owned Anglo-Iranian Oil Company. Fearing economic instability and potential Soviet influence, the UK and the US orchestrated his removal.
Outcome: The CIA and British intelligence (MI6) organized protests and military support to overthrow Mosaddegh. They restored the authoritarian Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, to absolute power, which ultimately fueled deep anti-American sentiment in Iran and the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Operation PBSuccess (1954)
Target: Jacobo Árbenz, the democratically elected President of Guatemala.
Reason: Árbenz enacted land reforms that redistributed unused land from the massive US-based United Fruit Company to impoverished peasants. His administration’s inclusion of local communists led Washington to fear a “Soviet beachhead” in Latin America.
Outcome: The CIA supplied and directed a small mercenary force led by Carlos Castillo Armas. Árbenz was forced to resign, and Guatemala subsequently endured decades of civil war and right-wing dictatorships.
Vidal: “I was born 80 years ago in a country called the United States of America and now I live in a Homeland — an expression we haven’t heard since Hitler.”
In April of 2018, the U.S., U.K., and France launched more than 100 missiles at the former Assad regime in Syria over allegations that it had committed a chemical attack against civilians, in the town of Douma.
The bombing took place before inspectors from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) conducted an investigation into what really happened in Syria.
The evidence for a chemical attack at the time was based on video and images put out by CIA-backed rebel groups who controlled Douma at the time.
Videos and photos released showed over 40 civilians dead and foaming at the mouth in an apartment building, and cylinders on the roof of an apartment and on a bed in an apartment, alleged to be cylinders containing a chemical weapon which killed the civilians.
In March of 2019, the OPCW released a report which largely lined up with the narrative of a chemical attack in Douma.
While the report said there was no evidence of sarin gas or other nerve agents used in Douma, writing that the “team did not observe any major key precursors for the synthesis of chemical weapons agents, particularly for nerve agents such as sarin, or vesicants such as sulphur or nitrogen mustard” the report asserted that there was evidence for a chlorine gas attack in Douma, writing, “Regarding the alleged use of toxic chemicals as a weapon on 7 April 2018 in Douma, the Syrian Arab Republic, the evaluation and analysis of all the information gathered by the FFM—witnesses’ testimonies, environmental and biomedical samples analysis results, toxicological and ballistic analyses from experts, additional digital information from witnesses—provide reasonable grounds that the use of a toxic chemical as a weapon took place. This toxic chemical contained reactive chlorine. The toxic chemical was likely molecular chlorine.”
The suppressed evidence not only showed that experts “ruled out” the idea of Chlorine gas being used in Douma, but strongly suggested that the massacre in Douma was a false flag event carried out to trigger Western intervention.
Among the suppressed evidence were the minutes of a meeting with toxicologists who “ruled out” the possibility that Chlorine was used in Douma.
The minutes from the meeting read, “With respect to the consistency of the observed and reported symptoms of the alleged victims with possible exposure to chlorine gas or similar, the experts were conclusive in their statements that there was no correlation between symptoms and chlorine exposure. In particular, they stated that the onset of excessive frothing, as a result of pulmonary edema, observed in photos and reported by witnesses would not occur in the short time period between the reported occurrence of the alleged incident and the time the videos were recorded (approximately 3-4 hours).”

The toxic chemical leaking from a large storage tank in Garden Grove is methyl methacrylate, or MMA – a highly hazardous substance that can pose significant health and safety risks depending on exposure, officials said.
Methyl methacrylate is used to produce shatter-resistant acrylic glass, paints, adhesives, resins and plastics. Authorities describe it as both highly toxic and highly flammable, with the potential to become explosive under certain conditions.
Orange County fire officials said the incident involves a large volume of the chemical, with estimates of up to 7,000 gallons spilling from the tank. The Orange County Fire Authority noted that incidents involving this type of chemical are rare, with limited case studies available to guide response efforts.
“It’s a respiratory irritant, so it can start off very mild, but it can progress to a point where, yes, you would probably require hospitalization, if not more,” said Division Chief Nick Freeman of the Orange County Fire Authority.

During his time in Afghanistan, Jones disabled over 85 improvised explosive devices. In August 2010, however, Jones stepped on an IED, resulting in the loss of both legs above the knee.

When RaDonda Vaught got her first speaking request, it had been a year since that day in a Nashville courtroom, when she listened as a jury read her guilty verdict for negligent homicide and neglect of an impaired adult.

That was in 2022. Vaught was sentenced to three years of probation for administering the wrong medication and accidentally killing a patient at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2017.
She also lost her nursing license. So Vaught became a full-time farmer. She and her husband live on a small sheep farm in Bethpage, Tennessee, tucked in the rolling hills north of Nashville. They sell eggs at farmers markets on Saturdays and supply meat to local butchers and restaurants.

The controversial trial had been national news, and now the healthcare industry wanted to hear from her.
Onstage, Vaught confronts the painful and embarrassing details directly, often choking back tears when talking about the patient who died — Charlene Murphey.
It wasn’t just one mistake that led to the death.
A doctor had ordered a sedative called Versed to settle Murphey’s claustrophobia before an imaging procedure. Vaught typed “VE” into the search function to retrieve Versed from the electronic medicine cabinet. When it did not dispense, she overrode the system.
In Vaught’s trial, fellow nurses testified that during a time when the hospital was upgrading some of its technology, they could use overrides to bypass delays.

When Vaught took that step, one of the drug options available was vecuronium, a powerful paralytic. Vaught overlooked multiple warnings about the danger of vecuronium, including on the bottle’s cap, which said “Warning: Paralyzing Agent,” according to court records.
Vaught administered the vecuronium and also left the patient alone.
While not disputing most of the facts, Vaught pleaded not guilty to all charges, claiming there were other factors, such as a new electronic health record system that was causing widespread problems in the hospital. A lead investigator for the prosecution testified in the criminal case that Vanderbilt also shared some responsibility.
As previously reported by KFF Health News, Vanderbilt did not initially report the error to regulators as required and told the medical examiner that the patient died of natural causes. The medical center fired Vaught and negotiated a settlement with the Murpheys that keeps the family from talking publicly about her death.
Once the case became a criminal matter, though, the details entered the public record. Vaught is not bound by the hospital’s settlement, allowing her to share whatever she feels comfortable sharing with whomever she wants.

A Chinese woman who has planted trees in the deserts of Inner Mongolia for decades has contacted an American man who donated US$5,000 to her and invited him to visit a forest that came into being because of his funding.
Yin Yuzhen, 60, was awarded as a National Model Worker by China’s State Council in 2000 for her long-term anti-desertification efforts.
Hailing from a poor family in northwestern Shaanxi province, Yin married a man who lives in Maowusu Desert in Inner Mongolia in the 1980s.

The desert, which is also known as Ordos Desert, is one of four major sandy lands in the country.
Since then Yin and her husband engaged in planting trees there by overcoming challenges brought by drought and high winds.
After Yin’s persistent efforts were reported by state media CCTV in 1999, Ronald Sakolsky, who taught English at Luoyang No 2 Foreign Language School in central Henan province at the time, was moved by her and donated US$5,000 to Yin.

“I have never seen such a big amount of money before. It made me surprised,” Yin told the news portal The Paper.
“I used the money to buy more saplings and planted more trees. When Mr Sakolsky visited me, he saw me planting trees in the desert. Seeing the land filled with yellow sands, he shook his head, saying ‘impossible, impossible’,” she recalled.
Those saplings have turned into more than 50,000 big trees, said Yin.

In early May, Yin asked the Henan school to find Sakolsky. On May 17, Bai Fan, vice-principal of the school, called Sakolsky, telling him that the saplings had grown into big trees.
“Yin Yuzhen and her family invite you and me to see the forest. They miss you a lot. They are looking forward to seeing you in the desert in Inner Mongolia,” said Bai on the phone.
Sakolsky replied: “That would be awesome. I cannot wait.”

“Mr Sakolsky, we would like to invite you to come back to China to witness how the US$5,000 you donated many years ago has become a large forest,” said Yin.

Fatima stressed that her son, like many Palestinian youth, aspired to build a future and marry, but repeated arrests shattered those hopes. She said his detention reflects the broader suppression of press freedom, as journalists are jailed simply for practicing their profession.
She called for urgent intervention to secure his release, emphasizing that Hatem committed no offense beyond his reporting. Since the war on Gaza began in October 2023, Israel has intensified violations in the West Bank, including daily raids, shootings, and mass arrests. Palestinian data shows 1,162 killed, over 12,000 injured, and nearly 23,000 detained since then.

Last month, Trump said that “we may stop by Cuba after we’re finished” with the illegal US-Israeli war of choice against Iran. The president has also stated he believes he’ll “be having the honor of taking Cuba,” language echoing the 19th-century US imperialists who conquered the island along with Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines from Spain in another war waged on dubious pretense.
“Whether I free it, take it—I think I can do anything I want,” Trump said of the island and its 11 million inhabitants.

The film begins with the death of a patrol member and ends with the patrol leader Ri Tai’s sky burial. There are many overhead shots for figures to show the tininess of human beings from a natural perspective. However, patrol members, who live under such harsh conditions but with firm faith, are the undoubted core of the film. They are so small in the uninhabited land but so great in human dignity.
Patrol leader Ri Tai, as the protagonist of the movie, is a brave hero. His life is filled with sadness but exudes romantic persistence, which is touching and impressive. He always frowns with unswerving gaze. No matter how cunning the criminals are, he can find out keys or Tibetan antelope wool. When his injured team member is short of money for treatment, he says decisively, “Sell the skin.” After he leaves his teammates alone for catching poachers, he is asked whether his peers will be safe, he only says, “I hope it will not snow.” When Ga Yu asks him what is the biggest difficulty now, he replies, “No money, no people, no gun.”
He is facing numerous difficulties. But he never stops his endeavor to catch poachers.
Ri Tai says “Have you ever seen those who are kowtowing? They are dirty in hand and face, but pure in heart.” This statement is a firm testament to his principle and romance. He may do something illegal. But his faith as a guardian never changes.
At the end of the film, he finally catches up with poachers. Standing in front of a gang of poachers with guns in hand, he stays calm and determined and says, “Hand in your guns and get arrested.”
Death is not scary for dauntless Ri Tai.
Another important figure in the film is the patrol member Liu Dong, who is more like an ordinary person compared with his leader. He is full of emotions. Sometimes he is lustful, sleeping on the laps of Leng Xue. Sometimes, he is outspoken. When he is trying to rescue his peer, he repeatedly says “money is not enough” in front of Ri Tai. But when he sells skins to cover the treatment cost, Liu is too reluctant to hand over the skins to the buyer, who robs the skins from him. As for protecting Tibetan antelope, he stays true to his team’s original belief and asks Leng Xue to borrow money. At the end of his life, where he is swallowed by the quicksand, Liu struggles again and again, and finally, faces up to the sky, showing his passion for the world.
Now, Kekexili has become a national nature reserve and is listed as a World Natural Heritage. The number of Tibetan antelopes is also steadily rising due to the protection of patrols. On September 4, 2016, the Tibetan antelope was reclassified on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red list from Endangered to Near Threatened.
In fact, there are a great number of unsung heroes around us, who are devoted to protecting the nature, animals and human beings, just like the medical workers who have protected us during the pandemic. There is very limited knowledge of his political ideas, except from his idealistic – pretty much ingenuous – envision of a world of peace and understanding.
After all, Tesla (1856-1943) lived in times of worldwide wars and significant geopolitical rearrangements, when capitalism was reaching its highest, imperialist stage. He lived through the First World War and died in the midst of the Second World War, having seen his own country torn apart, as a consequence of fierce imperialist competitions. Among others, he lived to see the 1917 Great October Socialist Revolution, the first important capitalist crisis (Great Depression, 1929-1933), the rise of Nazism in Europe, the gradual fall of the British Empire and the rise of the United States of America.
Under the Freedom Information Act, FBI declassified approximately 250 pages of documents related to Tesla in 2016, followed by two additional releases up to 2018 (1). The majority of the Federal Bureau’s documents focus on whether or not the Serbian-American scientist had invented a particle-beam weapon (known as “Death Ray”) that could possibly fall in the hands of Washington’s enemies, primarily the Soviet Union.
There is nothing in the FBI declassified documents to suggest any ties of Nikola Tesla with the socialist camp, other than his nephew, Sava Kosanovic, who at the time of Tesla’s death (1943) was the Yugoslav Ambassador to the U.S. and the man who inherited his estate. Furthermore, the archives have revealed a memo indicating that a man by the name of “Nicola Tesla“ (with a “c”, not “k”), made a speech at the Orange Hall in Springfield, Massachusetts, on 4 June 1922, under the auspices of the Friends of Soviet Russia organization. Was he Nikola Tesla the inventor, or someone with a similar name?
The fact is that there is no substantial proof that the Serbian inventor had any ideological or political affiliation with socialism-communism. However, a book published in 2017 in Russia, under the title “I Can Explain a Lot” (Дневники. Я могу объяснить многое, Москва, 2017) provides us a glimpse of Tesla’s positive attitude towards the socialist construction in the Soviet Union.
Before going to the relevant abstract, it’s necessary to point out that the book, which is a memoir, was edited by journalist and distant cousin of Tesla, named Stevan Jovanovic. Jovanovic, allegedly a maternal cousin of Josip Tito’s wife, Jovanka Budisavljević, claims that he managed to obtain access to FBI’s archives thus retrieving valuable information.
That being said, it cannot be guaranteed that the memoirs included in the book are authentic – nonetheless, they undoubtedly possess special historical interest that stimulates further research.

In addition, I cannot leave the work I have started, which could become one of my greatest discoveries…”.

One of the biggest challenges in making On the Icetook place long before we started filming. That was the process of casting. Several things about casting were vitally important to me from the start. First of all, the entire cast had to be Iñuit. I’ve seen way too many films, TV shows, and commercials with Asians, American Indians, or Hispanics cast as Eskimos.
I wanted a cast that deeply understood the world the characters came from. The film is about two Iñupiat teenage boys who have grown up together in a small, isolated village in Arctic Alaska. Life in places like that is fundamentally different from most of the rest of the country. In order to faithfully portray that world I needed actors who knew every facet of their character’s day-to-day experience.
Basically, I was looking for teenage Iñuit actors who grew up in small Arctic villages. A quick consultation with a casting agent confirmed my suspicion that the available talent pool which met those requirements was pretty much zero. If I was going to find a cast for this film, we were going to have to get creative.

I don’t think those ten months to plan helped him so much, though.

Off the top of my head, he’s sold golden sneakers, vodka, steaks, his own “patriotic” version of the Bible, his own sham “university,” and of course a mountain of MAGA-linked merchandise, MAGA caps being the most commonly seen. The man will sell anything anyway that he can, especially his own name. He is a shameless, a relentless, self-promoter. He is so self-centered, so me-me-me, that it boggles my mind why anyone would believe that Trump cares about them.
The latest shoddy product Trump is selling is the Iran War. When that folds or fails, perhaps a war on Cuba will be next. We get sold these “products” irrespective of their quality and regardless of whether we want or need them. As long as they’re making money for someone—especially if that someone is Trump—these shoddy wars will go on.

Amazon joins as a strategic customer as Decart expands its real-time AI infrastructure and world-model platform.
Artificial intelligence company Decart has raised $300 million at an estimated valuation of $4 billion, adding some of the world’s largest technology companies as both customers and investors.
The funding round was led by Radical Ventures and included participation from chip giant NVIDIA. Additional investors included eBay Ventures, Adobe Ventures, Toyota Ventures, Atreides Management, and Valor Equity Partners, alongside existing investors Sequoia Capital, Zeev Ventures, and Benchmark.

An Israeli crowdfunding platform has removed a campaign to fund the Hebrew translation of Irish author Sally Rooney’s latest novel, citing legal concerns that the publisher’s policy of not shipping books to West Bank settlements would violate Israel’s anti-boycott and anti-discrimination laws.

The 35-year-old has published four wildly popular novels that have been translated into dozens of languages. The first two – Conversations with Friends and Normal People – were translated into Hebrew by the Israeli publisher Modan. But in 2021, Rooney turned down a translation offer from the publisher for her third novel, Beautiful World, Where Are You, citing her desire to support the BDS movement, a Palestinian-led, global campaign that seeks to “end international support for Israel’s oppression of Palestinians and pressure Israel to comply with international law”.
In a conversation with Irish Palestinian artist and activist Samir Eskanda published on Tuesday, Rooney spoke about her regret at having once worked with a publisher she later realized had ties to the Israeli military.

“How could my actions be so inconsistent with my beliefs?” she said. By the time her third book was published, she added, “I had also become something of a public figure, and I felt a greater sense of responsibility in making decisions around my work.”
Modan did not respond to a request for comment.
November Books is the only Israeli publisher that meets conditions the BDS movement has set for exemption from the boycott. It does not operate in illegal Israeli settlements, receives no Israeli state funding and explicitly recognises the legal rights of Palestinians, including the right of return for Palestinian refugees, Rooney said. It has also published translations of Ta-Nehisi Coates and Naomi Klein’s books, along with a novel by Irish writer Colum McCann, which other Israeli publishers reportedly refused to translate.
Ishai Menuchin, November Books’s director, said in a statement that “publishing books by authors associated with the boycott movement demonstrates to Israeli readers that opposition to occupation, apartheid and genocide is what lies at the heart of the boycott – a clearly legitimate form of political protest”.
