Native Indians in Western Colombia collect these frogs – golden Phyllobates terribilis and multicoloured Phyllobates bicolor – and sweat out the poison over a fire before putting it on their darts. The LD50 is around 2 micrograms per kg, meaning that an amount the size of two grains of table salt will kill you.
Batrachotoxin kills by interfering with sodium ion channels in the cells of muscles and nerves, jamming them open so that they do not close. The continued migration of results ultimately in heart failure.

Part-Time Faculty Compensation
Average pay for a standard three-credit course section was $4,093 in 2024–25 across 428 reporting institutions. The report’s expanded minimum-pay reporting adds more detail than previous reports: 556 institutions reported minimum pay per course section, the median minimum was $3,130, nearly one-fifth of institutions reported minimum pay above $5,000, and 70 percent reported minimum pay of $4,000 or less. Benefits for part-time faculty members paid per course section remained thin, with just 32.7 percent of institutions contributing toward retirement for some or all such faculty members and 30.6 percent contributing toward medical insurance premiums. The overall message is plain: Part-time faculty compensation remains low, fragmented, and insecure.
Median presidential salaries ranged from about $275,000 at public associate’s institutions without ranking systems to $850,000 at private-independent doctoral universities. Depending on sector and institutional type, presidential compensation ranged from roughly three times to more than five times the average salary of a full professor. That ratio remains one of the clearest illustrations of the widening gap between executive compensation and faculty pay.

According to a new report from POGO, U.S. military spending is already $1.5 to $1.7 trillion per year, or — if you include (and why shouldn’t you?) interest on debt for past military spending, $1.7 to $2.3 trillion per year. The variations among the five different calculations featured in the report have a lot to do with the complexity and obscurity of the U.S. government, including the variety of sources of government data that can be used. It takes serious research to dig the militarism out, as it’s hidden everywhere. But the big-ticket items are things like “Homeland Security” and veterans’ benefits and debt interest.
The report gives us not the slightest hint at any reason to doubt the highest figure. If that $2.3 trillion per year is correct, and if Trump’s servants on Capitol Hill add another $0.5 trillion just for kicks plus another $0.2 trillion specifically for destroying Iran and rebuilding the bases that Iran destroyed — and the pending destruction of which was the immediate excuse for the war — then we’ll be at $3 trillion. . . and — barring the appearance of a spine in a significant number of members of Congress — another $3 trillion or more the next year and the next and the next.

Kaja Kallas wants you to sacrifice. She is very clear about this. European workers should pay more tax. Estonian teachers should accept wage freezes. Ordinary citizens should absorb rising energy costs, shrinking benefits, and the general economic wreckage of a prolonged military confrontation , all in the name of a “rules-based order” that has, somehow, never seemed to cost the people running it very much at all.
Kallas is the EU’s current High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the bloc’s unelected foreign policy chief, and the West’s most reliable voice for military escalation at every turn.
She is also, by the record of her years governing Estonia, a textbook neoliberal: austerity for workers, flexibility for capital, and a foreign policy framework in which the security of global markets and Western military alliances is treated as synonymous with democracy itself.
The domestic unpopularity that plagued Kallas before her departure for Brussels was driven by a consistent pattern of aristocratic tone-deafness.
During the peak of Estonia’s inflationary crisis, when working-class households were choosing between heating and groceries due to skyrocketing energy costs, Kallas brushed off public anxieties during a live broadcast by stating that her own parents were pensioners and “they don’t complain.”
She omitted the vital context that her father, Siim Kallas, is a former Prime Minister, former European Commissioner, and one of the wealthiest institutional figures in modern Estonian history.
