The Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid said he would not attend FID Marseille, an international film festival taking place in July, according to a report in Le Monde. Several directors who had planned to participate withdrew their films from the festival to protest the inclusion of Lapid, because they support a cultural boycott of Israel.

Lapid, 51, who has been living in France since 2021, was invited to serve on the festival jury. Tsveta Dobreva, director of the FID, told Le Monde: “We invited Nadav Lapid solely out of respect for his filmmaking. That is the only criterion at FID. Yiftach is like a machine, which only comes to a brief halt at the very last moment of the film.

This study of Israeli males and manhood continues with the portrait of the revolutionary group. Though I found this part of the film to be less interesting or compelling, there is a touching plot line about a one rebel who is raised by a single father, a political activist who gave it all up. The mother is absent – I don’t remember why – and there is some gentle hopelessness in both father and son. If Yaron runs on autopilot, these two simply lost their way. In both cases, the results are just as disastrous in both cases.

Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, conveyed a message through his lawyer during today’s latest court session:

“I am a paediatrician who provides medical care to patients, the wounded, and the most vulnerable in the Strip. I carried out my work in accordance with international law and humanitarian standards. My detention is unjust and arbitrary, and I demand that the court release me immediately.”

Accordingly, his lawyers have asked the court to issue a decision, which may be delivered in the coming hours or days.

His son Elyas Abu Safiya, who is also a doctor, told The Guardian newspaper that his father required surgery to remove shrapnel that had become lodged in his left thigh when he was detained, and that he continued to suffer persistent pain and swelling at the site of the wound.

“What we know [about his time in detention] shows severe suffering,” Elyas said. “During the first months of his detention, he was not allowed to change his clothes, and he developed skin diseases without receiving proper treatment.

“We were told that he is [now being] held in an extremely small solitary cell, no larger than one metre by one metre, a space barely enough to move or sit properly,” he added.

According to Elyas, at the time of his detention his father was wearing a white medical coat that he had refused to wash since his son Ibrahim was killed by a drone strike at the hospital entrance in October 2024.

Abu Safiya had kept the hospital running through more than 80 days of siege and attacks by Israeli forces amid an intensive military operation in the surrounding refugee camp.

More than 525 days after his arrest, Israeli authorities have yet to bring any formal charges against him. He was classified as an “unlawful combatant”, along with more than 375 medical workers – a designation Israel has frequently used to justify prolonged detention without trial. Since his detention, the family has not been able to communicate with him directly.

“The only accusation is his refusal to obey the Israeli army’s orders to evacuate the hospital and leave the patients to their fate,” Elyas said.
