Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard has suggested that Turkiye and Egypt could be Israel’s next military targets, echoing a growing Israeli narrative that increasingly casts Ankara as the “new Iran” and a future strategic enemy.

The remarks are consistent with a wider Israeli effort to reframe Turkiye as a major military threat. Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has described Turkiye, with Qatari support, as replacing Iran as Israel’s main strategic challenge, while Israeli security circles have warned of possible direct confrontation with Ankara in Syria. Analysts have cautioned that framing Turkiye as the “new Iran” risks turning rivalry into open confrontation.

• The blood should be totally drained

Could it be that Israel’s 30-year narrative about Iran – one that persuaded US President Donald Trump to wage a criminal and disastrous war of aggression – was always a fiction, an invention cooked up in Tel Aviv?

Far from Tehran posing an existential danger to Israel, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed for decades, might Israel’s real fear be that a stronger Iran would undermine its unique leverage over Washington, threatening its status as the region’s sole – and unmonitored – nuclear power?

Might large parts of the globe be facing economic meltdown simply so that Israel can remain the Middle East’s top dog – an unaccountable apartheid state committing genocide against the Palestinian people and ethnically cleansing southern Lebanon?

The newspaper reported that Netanyahu not only mis-sold Trump on the idea of quick regime change in Iran following a short “shock and awe” bombing campaign. He also identified to the White House who was going to replace Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme religious leader.

J. Cook: Extraordinarily, according to the Times, Netanyahu named the man for the job as former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The aim at the start of the air campaign was for Israel to kill Khamenei, then liberate Ahmadinejad from house arrest by striking the guards who were confining him.

Presumably, Ahmadinejad was then supposed to storm the citadel and seize the keys to the palace. But only Khamenei’s assassination went according to plan.

Ahmadinejad, who had reportedly been consulted on the scheme beforehand, is believed to have been injured in the Israeli strike near his home. He got cold feet, possibly suspecting he was being set up for assassination too, and went into hiding. His current whereabouts and medical condition are unknown.

In my 2008 book Israel and the Clash of Civilisations, I pointed out that nothing Israel was telling us about its Middle Eastern rival could be accepted at face value – least of all Israel’s assertion that Ahmadinejad was a Jew-hating “new Hitler”.

Many of the claims promoted 20 years ago by Israel about Ahmadinejad’s genocidal intent stemmed from a mistranslation of a speech in which the Iranian leader had quoted the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who led the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

According to western politicians and media, Ahmadinejad had called for Israel to be “wiped off the map” – widely portrayed as an ambition to launch a nuclear strike on Israel.

In fact, Ahmadinejad had been repeating Khomeini’s observation that Israel could not survive indefinitely in the form of an illegitimate Jewish supremacist state oppressing another people. He was pointing out that Israel’s days as a racist state were numbered, just as apartheid South Africa’s had been.

Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting has suggested cutting employers’ National Insurance (NI) could be a way to incentivise businesses to hire more young people.

In an interview with the Sunday Times, he also said some new North Sea drilling for oil and gas should be allowed as it would raise more tax.

Since quitting the cabinet just over a fortnight ago, Streeting has been distancing himself from policies pursued by Sir Keir Starmer’s government.

The former minister, who says he will challenge Sir Keir in any Labour leadership contest, has already said the UK’s future lies “one day back in the European Union”, and called for what he described as a “wealth tax”.

Now Streeting has floated the idea of a “targeted” cut to National Insurance to tackle youth joblessness.

It follows the publication this week of the review by Alan Milburn into the rising number of young people not in education, employment or training, known as NEETS.

“We have to make it easier for business to employ young people and for businesses to take that risk on someone,” Streeting told the Sunday Times.

“I think we should be thinking actively about how to incentivise, whether that’s through targeted reduction in employers’ National Insurance or other kinds of recruitment and retention incentives,” he said.

His review, and other statistics, paint a grim picture for young people in the UK:

• Six in 10 Neets have never had a job. In 2005, this was four in 10, the report says
• But 84% of Neet young people surveyed want a job or training, it adds
• There were 1,012,000 young people classed as Neet between January and March 2026, making up 13.5% of all young people in the UK, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS)
• The number of people classed as “economically inactive” – not looking or available to work – rose to about 613,000
• The number of young people classed as unemployed – not in work but seeking a job – was estimated to be 400,000
• Entry-level jobs have sharply declined, with the number of mid- and lower-skilled jobs in the economy falling by around 1.6 million over the past 20 year
• Vacancies in hospitality have halved in the last four years alone, ONS data also shows
