Donald Trump’s recent declaration at the G7 summit unmasks a dangerous shifting strategy by Washington and Tel Aviv, revealing a desperate blueprint to ignite a devastating sectarian war across the Middle East.
By openly stating that “if Israel can’t do the job without killing everyone else… Syria will do the job,” Trump delivered a glaring, inadvertent confession of monumental strategic failure. It is a direct admission that Israel’s army, the region’s most advanced conventional military machine, has completely failed to achieve its strategic objectives in Lebanon.
Having effectively lost the broader geopolitical war against Iran and realizing that direct military force cannot crush the resistance, the United States and Israel are pivoting from direct confrontation to a strategy of manufactured internal conflict.
The core of this strategy relies on weaponizing historical fractures to plunge Lebanon and the wider region into a bloody Sunni-Shia proxy war.
By publicly urging a newly reshaped Syrian leadership under Ahmed al-Sharaa to cross borders and “take care of” the resistance, Trump is trying to force Damascus into a destructive role as Washington’s local subcontractor. This is a calculated attempt to exploit regional wounds and drag neighboring states into a localized, grinding conflict.
The true objective of the Western alliance is no longer a clean military victory, which has proven impossible on the battlefield. Instead, the plan is to manufacture an endless cycle of civil strife, turning neighbors against one another to weaken the resistance from within.
Ultimately, Trump’s statements expose a policy built entirely on the deliberate instigation of regional chaos. Unable to secure their goals through outright warfare, the US and Israel are attempting to expand a sectarian fault line that starts in Lebanon and threatens to consume the entire Middle East.
As over 1.3 million Palestinians live in tents and makeshift shelters due to Israel’s mass bombings, destroying at least 92 percent of Gaza’s residential infrastructure, New York Democrats who voted to supply those same bombs smiled and waved down Fifth Avenue, with blue-and-white sashes around their torsos proclaiming them honorary grand marshals of the Israel Day Parade.
On Sunday, May 31, they marched in the largest annual display of US solidarity with the Israeli government alongside self-proclaimed fascists and architects of the genocide in Gaza. The politicians’ choice, amid expanding regional wars in Lebanon and Iran, highlights their disconnect from the American public who overwhelmingly oppose Israel’s war crimes.
Beforehand, Mayor Zohran Mamdani chose to act on his principles in boycotting the affair. In direct retaliation, the Israeli government sent the highest-ranking delegation since the parade’s inception in 1965.
Speaker of the Knesset Amir Ohana, who refused Palestinian prisoners vaccinations at the outbreak of the pandemic and espouses full Israeli annexation of the West Bank, led the parade. He was joined by Israeli Minister of Finance Bezalel Smotrich, a self-described “fascist homophobe” who has bragged about presiding over a genocide, proclaiming “Gaza will be completely destroyed” and that it would be “moral” to starve Gaza’s citizens.
Not to be outdone, Gov. Kathy Hochul began the day of the parade signing legislation deliberately overriding Mamdani’s veto of the controversial “buffer zone” bill, which restricts protest outside houses of worship. The new statewide law will crack down on demonstrators who oppose illegal sales of land stolen from Palestinians in the West Bank happening in New York synagogues.
With the ink still wet on this attack on New Yorkers’ right to protest, she announced, “Today, we march in defiance.” Marching in defiance to injustice is a storied tradition, but this is not what the governor had in mind. She seemed to be referring instead to marching in defiance of the mayor’s act honoring the sanctity of Palestinian life, disregarded by those the governor chose to march alongside.
Top New York Democratic officials, including Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, Attorney General Letitia James, New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, New York City Comptroller Mark Levine, Representative Dan Goldman, and New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin joined Hochul in literally marching in lockstep with senior ultranationalist Israeli officials — including Smotrich, who allegedly has a warrant from the International Criminal Court for his arrest.

Over the weekend, I saw the new documentary “American1 Doctor” which I highly recommend.

Filmed in unfolding, on-the-ground scenes, the story follows them from a Gazan hospital under siege, to the halls of Congress. Together, they fight to keep a promise to their Palestinian colleagues and patients, to continue the struggle where it matters most: the United States.
During the discussion period, a woman asked what people could do. The director, Poh Si Teng, said, ” Call your congressional representative,” which I found to be a frustratingly limited response. For one, the showing was in Washington, D.C. and people who live there don’t have real voting representation in Congress. What they do have is physical proximity to many of the people pulling the triggers for genocide — the subject of my piece “Protests beyond the Performative: Ideas for D.C.”

WAR CRIMES —
Four young people—Charlotte Head, Samuel Corner, Leona Kamio, and Fatema Rajwani—were sentenced as terrorists this week for the crime of criminal damage. They broke into an Elbit Systems factory in Filton, near Bristol, and caused approximately £1.2 million worth of damage. They livestreamed the whole thing wearing their, now iconic, red jumpsuits and they acted in the open.
A jury of their peers, that is, Brits, convicted them of criminal damage. Not terrorism or any kind of violent disorder. Simple criminal damage.
But here is where the really nightmarish situation begins. The judge, Mr Justice Johnson, had already decided that he would add a ‘terrorist connection’ to their sentences. He did this secretly, before the verdict and the jury was never told this was being considered. The defence was never given the opportunity to address it. The conviction came down on criminal damage charges. And then the judge, alone, unilaterally, declared that these young people are terrorists.

Two days after the Filton Activists’ sentencing, the Court of Appeal delivered its verdict on the government’s appeal against the earlier High Court ruling that the proscription of Palestine Action was unlawful. Five senior judges, led by Lady Chief Justice Baroness Carr, overturned the High Court’s decision meaning the ban is now lawful.
The Lady Chief Justice said:
It is not a sustainable proposition to portray Palestine Action as a non-violent protest group. Palestine Action overly promotes unlawful violence that amounts to terrorism’

The article is entitled: ‘‘Remember the Liberty’ has become code for ‘Israel Is Evil,’’’ with the subhead: “Rep. Massie’s call for a new investigation of the tragic 1967 attack on a U.S. ship isn’t about the truth.”
In reality, the article by Forward columnist Rob Eshman repeats a litany of false Israeli claims combined with ad hominem attacks on people he dislikes.
“What is Jewish supremacy? Eighty years after the Holocaust, it’s Mein Kampf in reverse. The superior race is us,” said Moshe Ya’alon.

Ya’alon spent decades in the Israeli military and is known to have taken part in the 1982 invasion of Lebanon, the violent suppression of the first and second Palestinian intifadas, and the 2014 war on Gaza.
In 2002, whilst serving as the army’s chief of staff, he said: “The Palestinian threat harbors cancer-like attributes that have to be severed and fought to the bitter end.”
And in 2015, he barred Breaking the Silence – an NGO of former Israeli soldiers who document army abuses – from engaging in activities with the military.
Since Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, Israeli society has shifted further toward the right. In this environment, cooperation between Jewish parties and Arab parties is no longer treated as a tactical option but as a political liability.
Despite this, both Netanyahu and his opponents continue to rely on Arab votes. The contradiction is now more exposed than ever, with Arab parties needed numerically, yet rejected politically.
Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich captured this mood when he argued that including Arab parties in government would be worse than the failure to prevent the Hamas-led operation on 7 October 2023. His position reflects a wider consensus that cuts across both coalition and opposition lines.
Former prime minister Naftali Bennett has repeatedly ruled out any partnership with Arab parties, calling instead for a purely Zionist government. By contrast, Yair Golan of the left-leaning Democrats has suggested reaching an understanding with Abbas as a way to remove Netanyahu. The gap between these positions illustrates the limits of opposition coordination.
