Hollywood actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman are among 50 people charged in a $25 million college entrance exam cheating scheme, according to court documents unsealed in Boston on Tuesday.
The alleged scam focused on getting students admitted to elite universities as recruited athletes, regardless of their athletic abilities, and helping potential students cheat on their college exams, according to the indictment.
Loughlin and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, agreed to a pay bribes totaling $500,000 in exchange for having their two daughters designated as recruits to the USC crew team – despite the fact that they were not rowers, the complaint says.

William “Rick” Singer ran a for-profit college counseling and preparation company called The Key (Edge College & Career Network). He also operated an affiliated fraudulent charity called the Key Worldwide Foundation. [1, 2]
While Singer famously coached a middle school basketball team at a Jewish Community Center (JCC) in Omaha, Nebraska, early in his career (2001), his business itself was not a religious organization. Instead, it served as the front for the massive “Operation Varsity Blues” college admissions scandal.
By 1994, Singer was running a business called Future Stars and was making a living helping high school juniors and seniors navigate the college application process.
“It’s not that school counselors don’t want to help,” Singer told the Bee. “It’s just that they often don’t have the time.”
Evidently, Singer quickly made a name for himself in that business.
“For a long time, he was the go-to person in Sacramento,” a consultant who asked not to be identified told the Bee.
It was not immediately clear when exactly Singer set up shop in Newport Beach, a tony oceanfront community south of Los Angeles, in Orange County. But the Newport Beach-based KWF charity was established in 2012 and Singer was ticketed twice in 2014 for minor traffic offenses in Newport Beach, records show.
Singer, who lives in Sacramento and Newport Beach, California, was arrested after the FBI investigation that was dubbed Operation Varsity Blues exposed a network of well-heeled parents who allegedly paid Singer millions to boost their kids’ chances of getting into elite colleges such as Yale University, Georgetown University and Stanford University.

In March 2019, Rick Singer pled guilty to federal charges-including racketeering conspiracy, money laundering conspiracy, conspiracy to defraud the United States, and obstruction of justice-for his role in what was widely-publicized as the “Varsity Blues” college admissions scheme.
Specifically, Mr. Singer admitted to,among other things: bribing standardized test proctors and administrators to engage in cheating on college entrance exams (i.e., the SAT and ACT); falsifying students’ academic transcripts by paying third parties to take classes in their names; falsifying students’ college applications with fake awards, athletic activities, and fabricated essays; and bribing college athletic coaches and administrators, through purported donations to their programs and personal bribes, to designate students as athletic recruits based on falsified athletic credentials.
As part of the scheme, Mr. Singer took in more than $25 million from his clients, from which he made payments to co-conspirators totaling more than $7 million, and transferred, spent, or otherwise used more than $15 million for his own benefit. On January 4, 2023, a federal court in Boston sentenced Mr. Singer to 42 months in prison and three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay more than $10 million in restitution and to forfeit assets totaling more than $8.7 million.

If Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner has his way, the abandoned island of Sazan off the southern Albanian coast is to be completely transformed into a luxury tourist destination. Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama recently gave green light for the nature-destroying plans. This development fits in with the tourism strategy of the government in Tirana to massively expand luxury tourism on Albania’s coasts with foreign investment.
Sazan was a naval base for a long time. Due to its military use, only soldiers were allowed to stay there; nature was able to develop largely undisturbed. The island is actually a national and international nature reserve. Together with the unspoiled stretch of beach at Zvërnec and the nearby Vjosa delta, this is one of the last unspoiled stretches of coastline in Albania.

All that comes on top of the news that the Albanian anti-corruption authorities have launched a probe into Kushner’s deal with Tirana, which poses a direct test also for the European Union which Albania seeks to join.
The Vjosa-Narta Delta — home to rare flamingos, pelicans, and turtle hatcheries — became Europe’s first Wild River National Park in 2023. But after Trump’s 2024 reelection, Kushner unveiled plans for a multibillion-dollar resort on the protected island. Prime Minister Edi Rama’s government granted “strategic investor status” to a Kushner-linked firm, reportedly waiving taxes and tenders and bypassing environmental reviews. When construction recently began, a “Flamingo Revolution” erupted.
What’s really important here is the possible geopolitical ramifications of this real estate project. During Trump’s first presidency, Kushner promoted the Abraham Accords – so-called normalization deals between Israel and Arab nations, including the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. Netanyahu hailed those agreements as a great diplomatic triumph. Kushner and Netanyahu reportedly remain in close contact, even as Kushner negotiates with Iran on behalf of the Trump administration. Kushner’s investment firm, Affinity Partners, was explicitly created to deepen economic ties between Israel and the Arab world.
To understand the broader context, recall Israel’s classic “periphery strategy.” For decades, Tel Aviv has cultivated ties with non-Arab states on the edges of the Middle East — from the Caucasus to the Balkans to Africa — as a way to break its diplomatic isolation. Today, that strategy is alive and well. Israel has forged close relationships with Azerbaijan (a key energy partner and Israel’s intelligence foothold on Iran’s border), Serbia (which has significantly increased its arms imports from Tel Aviv), Romania (which announced it will move its embassy to Jerusalem), and now Albania.
Albania fits perfectly into this picture. Strategically located in the Balkans, it is a Muslim-majority but secular state, a staunchly pro-American NATO member, and an eager actor looking to prove its value to Western allies. Crucially, it is also a European Union candidate country. Having another friendly nation inside the EU — or at its doorstep — would be immensely helpful to Israel as public sentiment across Europe turns increasingly critical of Israeli policies.
With EU member states debating sanctions, the potential suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, or bans on trade with the Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, any sympathetic voice in the EU can be very helpful. Tirana is not yet a member, but its trajectory matters; and Prime Minister Rama has proved himself a strong ally.

Bernays worked with the CPI in its Bureau of Latin-American Affairs and, after the war, parlayed his experience in changing people’s minds into the field of public relations, of which many consider him the “father.”
The nephew of Sigmund Freud, Bernays frequently cited Freud and other psychologists’ work in explaining how to use psychoanalysis and emotional techniques to control the human “herd.”
With language reminiscent of war, Bernays writes in Propaganda:
“The important thing is that [propaganda] is universal and continuous…its sum total regimenting the public mind every bit as much as an army regiments the bodies of its soldiers…small groups of persons can, and do, make the rest of us think what they please on a given subject.”
Bernays, who was born in Austria to Jewish parents, knew that his teachings on molding the public mind were formative for Nazi propaganda, even before WWII broke out. He was informed that Goebbels studied his book at a dinner party with foreign correspondent Kurt von Wiegand in 1933.
American WWI propaganda vs. Nazi WWII propaganda, which reads “The NSDAP protects the people. Your fellow comrades need your advice and help, so join the local party organization.”
But Bernays didn’t reveal this knowledge until writing his 1965 biography, saying that it “shocked” him,
“…but I knew any human activity can be used for social purposes or misued for antisocial ones. Obviously the attack on the Jews of Germany was no emotional outburst of the Nazis, but a deliberate, planned campaign.”
Two years after Bernays learned that Hitler was using his ideas on propaganda to build a cult of personality in Nazi Germany, Bernays continued to advocate for these exact methods when giving a speech to the Financial Advertisers Association in 1935, saying:
“[The world needs] an entire new set of outstanding human living symbols that will hold public confidence…Publicists, economists, leaders in research, the heads of great educational institutions can and should be made the human symbols to bring new faith and strength.”
Writes historian Larry Tye in The Father of Spin: Edward L. Bernays & The Birth of Public Relations:
“Bernays was savvy enough not to retell the Goebbels tale in the 1930s and 1940s, when it could have tarnished his image, and to dwell instead on how his propaganda techniques had aided America in the two world wars.”
Bernays was more concerned with promoting his own brand and convincing big business of the usefulness of public relations for industry and commerce than the horrors that propaganda wrought.
And his retelling of how he learned that his ideas were being used to build the Nazi party, occupies only a page and a half of his 849 page biography, which focuses almost entirely of how he used propaganda to expand American capitalism.
(One of today’s top marketers, Russell Brunson, founder of the popular ClickFunnels software, isn’t as shy about connecting his brand to Hitler. Brunson wrote a whole book, Expert Secrets, about how he studied Nazi propaganda to learn how to build a cult movement of followers who will do anything you ask. In his biography, Bernays describes the company:
“United Fruit was a way of life; the company was conducted like a private government. It had its own behavior patterns and loyalties. Individual lives were merged with the company’s life, for the company decided who was to live where, and how long. United Fruit employees in the tropics were thrown among other members of the company in all their activities. The company plantation in the jungle town was a settlement of American people, houses, and folkways…the native agricultural workers were treated as human machines rather than human beings and without regard to their folkways or culture patterns.”
Reading this horrifying description now, it’s hard to believe that Bernays thought this company deserved rescuing through public relations, but his book recounts how — despite seeing the ways United Fruit dehumanized its workers and bought up huge swathes of lands from farmers, forcing locals to become dependent on its corporate rule — he helped wage a decades-long war in Central America to secure United Fruit’s power and profits.
When Jacobo Árbenz took office, he began nationalizing the land controlled by United Fruit and returning it to the Guatemalan people. Bernays launched a public relations campaign to position Árbenz, not as a nationalist trying to secure his peoples’ ability to survive, but a communist under Soviet influence, who was working with the USSR to sabotage American capitalism and imperialism.
Thanks to Bernays’ relentless propaganda, he convinced President Dwight D. Eisenhower that Guatemala would soon fall to communist rule, which led to Operation PBSuccess. The CIA paid and trained Honduran militias to invade Guatemala and overthrow Árbenz.
The leader of the Honduran militia, Carlos Castillo Armas, replaced Árbenz and became the first in a series of military dictators that controlled Guatemala until the 1990s — all backed by the CIA. Armas returned the nationalized land to United Fruit and ensured that the American company received preferential treatment in Guatemalan commerce.
