If the state gets what it wants, the Palestine rallies are going to be something the state can afford to ignore, like it could afford to ignore the demonstrations against the Iraq invasion. It wants these outbursts of resistance to be confined to an activist niche; be led by orgs that worship the spontaneity of the masses rather than drive forth the struggle; and therefore are unable to sustain their momentum. This tactic of diverting and neutralizing mass outrage can’t work, though, when the authentically revolutionary organizations are able to take advantage of these disruptions; when the actors within the struggle who haven’t been co-opted expand their relationship with the people, using the people’s passion as a way of forming such connections. It’s evident that APSP did this kind of mass work well enough during the post-George Floyd era for the state to come to view it as a threat; a threat that the state felt worthwhile to counter through raids and indictments.

That these attacks on the Uhuru organization happened, and happened within a few years following the 2020 police brutality uprisings, shows the counterinsurgency which the state waged against these uprisings wasn’t ultimately successful. It succeeded in the short term, but not in the longer term, and the state admitted this defeat when it assailed Uhuru; the Democratic Party’s having been able to pacify many of those who got involved in the struggle, and get them to either vote blue or become politically aimless, didn’t prevent Uhuru from continuing to bring Black workers into the long-term fight for liberation. All the freedom fighters needed was to exercise patience and stay principled, and it wouldn’t take long for them to become successful enough that the state got frustrated with them. (source)

Letter: Why Veterans Day is a national sham

This Veterans Day, I began to reflect upon what Veterans Day means today in a nation obsessed with itself. I am a veteran so, therefore, I speak with some basis for this post.

When I was young, I had uncles — four of them — who fought in WWII to free Europe; one died in Malmedy. As a youth, Veterans Day was a day wherein veterans and the dead, whom lay in graves both here and abroad, were paid respectful honors for their service.

Today, as a mature man, I have seen Veterans Day devolve from those of the past into a hodgepodge menagerie of dog-and-pony ceremonial show antics, (mainly by self proclaimed “moral” political types whom never swore the oath and never will fully grasp the nature of service in the military). All the while some 300,000 U.S. veterans have died due to negligence or whatever by the VA, by gross neglect of those deceased veterans for political convenience by the current administration.

I have watched as communities quietly forgo Veterans Day events to conform to “political correctness” (the bane of straight talk, saying what one precisely one means, which in the past was a distinct trait of what it was to be as a American) in millennial-oriented communities that have become more and more anti-military, anti-veteran and anti-Second Amendment, which in the sum of the equation equals anti-American. Otherwise socialist.

This Veterans Day, I didn’t attend some ceremony officiated by some self-serving neophyte politician whom didn’t serve, but quieted reflected upon the honor of having served the greater good and remembering with great humility and gratitude my brothers and sisters of the military family that served, and who have endured and suffered under the current dysfunctional system of our government. And those, most of all, who never came home.

I have come to that conclusion after observing the inability or unwillingness of the “international community” to help the children and people of Gaza.

The failure to help is a failure of humanity itself.

I hereby apologize for all the concepts, values and principles of human rights that I have worked hard to promote over the course of 25 years.

I had believed that these principles enjoyed some respect from governments.

I had believed that governments and international institutions had a sense of morality.

I had believed that governments and international institutions would strive to protect the innocent at a time when they called for help from the whole world, help to end the injustice against them and to stop the premeditated cold-blooded massacres inflicted on them.

Palestinians are guilty of no crime – unless being Palestinian is itself a crime.

The destruction of life in Gaza is happening before the eyes and ears of the world.

It will remain a stain of disgrace on the forehead of the “international community” and each individual working for that “community.”

I am certain that every official in international institutions will feel a sense of shame, that all these officials will be haunted every time they look at themselves in a mirror.

On 12 October, Israel’s defense minister Yoav Gallant addressed his NATO counterparts via a video link.

Just three days earlier, Gallant had resorted to Nazi language by calling Gaza’s people “human animals.”

There is no indication that NATO expressed revulsion or even mild unease at that term. Rather, Stoltenberg assured Gallant that “Israel does not stand alone.”

NATO was sending similar signals to Israel before the latest war against Gaza was declared.

In late September, Rob Bauer, the Dutch admiral chairing NATO’s military committee, visited Israel to hang out with the top brass in its army. Baeur was given a tour of Erez – the checkpoint from which Israel has overseen its blockade of Gaza.

Bauer had previously welcomed Israeli representatives to NATO’s Brussels headquarters in May. On that occasion, he discussed the “innovation strategy” followed by Israel’s military and its development of “disruptive technologies.”

The limited details published by NATO did not specify which “technologies” may have been singled out. Yet it is certainly true that Israel is now disrupting all aspects of life in Gaza and – to a considerable degree – across historic Palestine.

In an interview with ABC News that aired on Monday, Netanyahu reiterated his opposition to a ceasefire without the release of hostages, but expressed openness to “tactical little pauses.”

“As far as tactical little pauses, an hour here, an hour there. We’ve had them before, I suppose, we’ll check the circumstances in order to enable goods, humanitarian goods to come in, or our hostages, individual hostages to leave,” the prime minister said, “But I don’t think there’s going to be a general ceasefire.”

Israeli Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu has suggested that his country could launch a nuclear strike on Gaza. The controversial remarks caused outrage across the Israeli government, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suspending Eliyahu indefinitely.

In a Sunday interview with Radio Kol Berama, when asked if Israel could drop an atomic bomb on the Palestinian enclave, the minister, who is a member of the far-right Otzma Yehudit party, replied that “this is one of the possibilities.”

We have recently witnessed the fiftieth anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the only use of nuclear weapons in warfare. The non-use of nuclear weapons since then remains the single most important phenomenon of the nuclear age. Yet we still lack a full understanding of how this tradition arose and is maintained and of its prospects for the future. The widely cited explanation is deterrence, but this account is either wrong or incomplete. Although an element of sheer luck no doubt has played a part in this fortuitous outcome, this article argues that a normative element must be taken into account in explaining why nuclear weapons have not been used since 1945. A normative prohibition on nuclear use has developed in the global system, which, although not (yet) a fully robust norm, has stigmatized nuclear weapons as unacceptable weapons of mass destruction. Without this normative stigma, there might have been more “use.” This article examines this phenomenon in the context of the nuclear experience of the United States.

A US nuclear bomb planned for development has the potential to level central Moscow and kill more than 300,000 of its 13 million inhabitants, Newsweek magazine reported on Friday, citing a simulation created through the online tool Nukemap.

The Pentagon announced late last month that it would seek to make a new variant of the B61 nuclear gravity bomb – the B61-13 – pending authorization by Congress. The weapon would have an estimated 360-kiloton yield, which is 24 times more powerful than the one dropped on Hiroshima during World War II.

If detonated over Moscow, the bomb would kill an estimated 311,480 people and injure up to 868,860, Newsweek said. If dropped on St. Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city, the estimated number of fatalities from the explosion would reach 360,150, the publication added.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Zelensky have not visited each others’ countries since the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine by Russia. But with Moscow hosting Hamas officials and introducing resolutions against Israel at the UN, Jerusalem might be looking to move the dial closer to Kyiv.

Payday loan firms have gone to war with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. According to the report, “Powerful financial firms that offer high-cost, short-term loans to poor Americans have blocked at least five federal investigations into their business practices since the start of last year, part of a broad and aggressive campaign by payday lenders to neuter or eliminate their chief watchdog agency in Washington.” These firms have fought the CFPB tooth and nail in the courts, successfully bringing a case to challenge the existence of the Bureau itself to the Supreme Court. As that case winds its way through the legal system, these firms have “cited the pending Supreme Court decision to slow ongoing CFPB investigations or fight off the agency’s recent punishments.” 

Lisa Gilbert, the executive vice president of Public Citizen, which filed a briefing with the Supreme Court in defense of the CFPB, noted that “The really big-picture implication is all of the rules of the last 12 years could be called into question.”

This is referred to in the famous instance of Jesus’ driving the money changers out of the Temple (Matt. 21:12). Not only did these foreign coins have to be changed but also ordinary deposits were often handed over to the Temple authorities for safe deposit in the Temple treasury (Jos., Wars 6:281–2).

Thus Jerusalem became a sort of central bourse and exchange mart, and the Temple vaults served as “safe deposits” in which every type of coin was represented (TJ, Ma’as. Sh. 1:2, 52d, and parallels). The business of money exchange was carried out by the shulḥani (“exchange banker”), who would change foreign coins into local currency and vice versa (Tosef., Shek. 2:13; Matt. 21:12). People coming from distant countries would bring their money in large denominations rather than in cumbersome small coins.

The provision of small change was a further function of the shulḥani (cf. Sif. Deut., 306; Ma’as Sh., 2:9). For both of these kinds of transactions the shulḥani charged a small fee (agio), called in rabbinic literature a kolbon (a word of doubtful etymology but perhaps from the Greek κόλλυβος “small coin”; TJ, Shek. 1:6, 46b). This premium seems to have varied from 4 percent to 8 percent (Shek. 1:6, et al.). [AFTER HER “SOLIDARITY MISSION” following the October 7 Hamas surprise attack, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul initially declined to say who covered the cost for the journey to Israel. Her administration would only say it was a “nonprofit that works with the Jewish community.”

Half of the State’s roads are in fair or poor condition, 10% of its bridges are in poor condition. Reduced ridership during the pandemic has exacerbated shortfalls for aviation and transit operations, leaving significant budget shortfalls looming in the coming years.

Recent supply chain issues and congestion have demonstrated the essential role America’s multimodal freight network serves in the national and global economy. New York supports one of the busiest port systems in the U.S., along with 3,279 miles of rail lines. Ports and the smaller freight railroads face substantial funding backlogs to maintain and prepare structures for future needs. While the majority of freight rail is privately supported, the Port Authority of New York New Jersey has identified a capital need of $20 billion to replace mission-critical wharf structures, greatly exceeding financial resources. Passenger rail also faces severe maintenance shortfalls as Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor faces a $38 billion backlog.

Water, waste management and leisure infrastructure are critically impactful aspects of public welfare, and unfortunately often overlooked. Funding for public parks decreased 6% in 2021 compared to 2020. While the state has abundant freshwater resources, water and wastewater systems are among the oldest in the country, and many of New York’s dams were built before modern design standards. The 20-year need for drinking water is estimated at $44.2 billion, and wastewater systems will required $38 billion through the same period. Discovery and regulation of new environmental contaminants will be a point of greater emphasis for water and wastewater systems in the future. Solid Waste was found adequate, with approximately 16-25 years of available landfill capacity, but recycling lags behind the national average.

Assimilation or intermarriage is a Jewish Holocaust!

Activist and blogger Tony Greenstein, a veteran of the Palestine solidarity movement in the UK, about his new book “Zionism During the Holocaust: The Weaponization of Memory in the Service of State and Nation.”

While several Israeli authors have touched upon the links between Zionism and Nazism, Greenstein’s book brings this history to the fore and exposes how Zionist leaders were concerned with the establishment of the colonial state, as opposed to preventing the killing of Jews during the Holocaust.

In his introduction, Greenstein writes,

“This book is a response to a Zionist historiography which has attempted to write anti-Zionism out of history and consign it to a ‘state of oblivion’.”

The book is divided in three parts, chronicling the influence of Zionism before, during and after the Holocaust. Of particular significance is the insistence of early Zionist leaders to distinguish between Jews deemed eligible for entry into Palestine for the settler-colonial enterprise.

While Zionism realised the importance of exploiting the Holocaust to argue for proof of needing a Jewish state, despite the fact that not all victims were Jewish, it also determined that only Jewish people that could contribute to setting up the settler-colonial enterprise would be allowed entry. The concept of Jewish refugees as a humanitarian issue derived from politics was of no concern to the Zionist leaders. To this effect, Zionists leaders collaborated with the Nazis, striking deals which would enable masses of Jews to be exterminated, in return for preserving the lives of elite Jews for the purpose of colonial migration to Palestine.

Quoting David Ben Gurion in 1933, Greenstein makes an important observation on how Zionism was not concerned with saving Jewish lives. Ben Gurion had explained that if there was

“a conflict of interest between saving individual Jewish lives and the good of the Zionist enterprise, we shall say the enterprise comes first.”

Nazism, Greenstein argues, benefited from the Zionist political ideology and harboured no opposition. For example, the Zionist claim that Jews were unable to assimilate anywhere in the world was adopted by the Nazis in their persecution of Jewish people. Anti-Semitism, therefore, was a joint “Hitler understood early on that there was a distinction between the Jews and Zionism.” And while Jews actively fought against Nazism, Zionists collaborated with Nazism and fascism.

The conflation between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism which rests so well with Israel and the international community, was necessary for the early Zionist leaders and for today’s Israeli government. The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of anti-Semitism does not allow criticism of the Israeli colonial state, particularly in comparing its policies to those of the Nazi. Yet, Greenstein notes, Israelis themselves noted the similarity. Besides the massacre of Kafr Qasem, which Israeli perpetrators compared to Nazi tactics, Greenstein quotes an Israeli stating,

“There is a wider identification with the Nazis in Israeli society.” (source)

Senior UN Human Rights official Craig Mokhiber recently resigned over the organization’s failure to address the brutal genocide in Gaza and Israel’s apartheid policies against Palestinians. In this interview with Vijay Prashad, he talks about how the UN failed the people of Palestine over the decades and how the UN moved away from the principled norms-based approach rooted in international law when it came to the question of Palestine. In fact, Wirth thinks that the $300 billion oil and gas company is “selling a product that has changed the quality of life on this planet. For the better.”

The 63-year-old industry veteran even described the company he has been leading since 2018 as “grounded in integrity and a deep belief in doing the right thing” in an interview with the Financial Times, before brushing off critics and making a “real world” case for fossil fuels.

“We are not selling a product that is evil,” Wirth added. “We’re selling a product that’s good.”

Yeah, that fucking continuing criminal enterprise Chevron and the other dirty mafia of big and little oil:

I mean, who’s ever heard of a private corporate law firm prosecuting a lawyer who won a civil case against a big oil company in that private corporate law firm, has the big oil company as a private client, while it’s prosecuting in the name of the U.S. government the main critic and the biggest adversary of the oil company? I mean, that’s not what happens in any rule of law country, much less the United States of America.

So, look, there’s no doubt Chevron broke new ground in terms of the tools and weapons it has and the larger industry has at their disposal, to capture the public machinery of justice of our criminal justice system and wield it in a way that tries to silence legitimate advocacy. That’s new. But that’s why it’s so scary. And I think that’s why, by the way, I’ve gotten so much support over the last two, three years while I’ve been detained. I mean, it’s just extraordinary the amount of support we’ve gotten, because people are really terrified by this. And they understand that this case goes way, way beyond me personally. It really is a direct assault on the ability to advocate by all environmental justice advocates, human rights lawyers who are on the frontlines trying to defend our Earth.

So that’s already 11 years ago, basically that suit — in 2014 the case was decided in federal court by this federal court judge named Louis Kaplan, who ruled that the Ecuadorian judgment was invalid because it was obtained through fraud basically, and that judgment, and I know that’s super complicated, so stay with me, but that hinged on the testimony of an Ecuadorian judge named Alberto Guerra, who claimed that Donziger had bribed him in the original trial.

What happens when lonely men, embittered by a sense of failure in the sexual marketplace, find each other and form communities on the internet? The result can be deadly.

A new paper by Harvard psychology postdoc Miriam Lindner explores the rise of male “incels,” short for involuntary celibates, and their susceptibility to extremist ideologies and behaviors. Linder argues that despite a string of mass shootings and violent attacks by men espousing incel ideologies in recent years there has been a relative lack of research into the drivers behind the phenomenon. The paper was published in Adaptive Human Behavior and Physiology.

In fact, a significant percentage of women are choosing to be celibate or single. Lindner cites research by Anna Brown at the Pew Research Center, which found that, “61% of single men were looking for a relationship or dates, but only 38% of women reported doing so.”

All of these factors, paired with online dating—an environment that amplifies users’ perceptions of being desirable—have contributed to the rise of violent male ideologies.

“We’re seeing that on dating apps, a lot of cues are being amplified,” she said. “And so you can go onto the internet and what you will see is that women will say, ‘Oh, my God, I got like, 100 matches.’ And it’s very difficult for [these] men to achieve the same thing.”

Lindner explained, “The way I view male psychology is that there is this kind of machinery that is sensitive to cues pertaining to sexual conflict. When male psychology registers failure in the sexual marketplace, it will often respond aggressively.”

Separately, the Israeli military said that it used the “Arrow” aerial defence system for the first time since the October 7 outbreak of the war with Hamas to intercept a surface-to-surface missile in the Red Sea fired towards its territory.

Yahya Saree, a spokesperson for the Houthi’s military, said the operation was the third targeting Israel and threatened to carry out more strikes “until the Israeli aggression stops.”

Earlier, a senior Houthi official told the AFP news agency that the Iran-backed Yemeni group had sent drones towards southern Israel.
