WikiLeaks has released a classified US military video depicting the indiscriminate slaying of over a dozen people in the Iraqi suburb of New Baghdad — including two Reuters news staff.

The video, shot from an Apache helicopter gun-sight, clearly shows the unprovoked slaying of a wounded Reuters employee and his rescuers. It shows Reuters journalist Namir Noor-Eldeen, driver Saeed Chmagh, and several others as the Apache shoots and kills them in a public square in Eastern Baghdad. They are apparently assumed to be insurgents. After the initial shooting, an unarmed group of adults and children in a minivan arrives on the scene and attempts to transport the wounded. They are fired upon as well. The official statement on this incident initially listed all adults as insurgents and claimed the US military did not know how the deaths ocurred. Martha Stewart has canceled Thanksgiving.

The Israel military raid on Al-Shifa, the largest hospital in Gaza, where thousands of Palestinians are sheltering, is an “unprecedented attack on civilian society” in the “darkest time in modern history,” that is being justified in the West by “a deep-rooted and frightening racism,” says Dr. Mads Gilbert, who worked at Al-Shifa. “You don’t do these things to people you consider equal.” Dr. Gilbert is a Norwegian physician who just spent weeks in Cairo trying to enter Gaza to help his colleagues and has worked extensively in Palestine since 1981.
“The civilian population of Gaza [have] done nothing wrong other than being born Palestinians in Gaza,” he says. “Israeli impunity has reached a new level, and we are all sinking into that abyss of disregard for human life.”
In a recent piece published in the News-Times (“Gaza: ceasefire now!” Nov. 3 edition), Newport resident Gilbert Schramm called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza as a solution to the terror attack that claimed the lives of over 1,400 Jews in Israel on Oct. 7.
On its face, this solution seems like a logical one. We are told, after all, that a ceasefire is the only way to end the “cycle of violence.” Sadly, calls for an immediate ceasefire create no lasting peace — only perverse incentives. A real, lasting peace comes only with the complete destruction of Hamas.
Schramm argues that Hamas is urging Palestinians to stay in Gaza to prevent their “ethnic cleansing” by Israel. This is patently false. Hamas instructs Palestinians to ignore Israeli pleas to flee Gaza because the continued presence of innocent civilians is all that prevents the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) from eviscerating Hamas tomorrow. This is because Israel specifically takes actions to avoid collateral damage.
The headquarters for Hamas leadership was deliberately constructed under the al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City for this purpose. Hamas knows that any attack on their headquarters will claim the lives of thousands of innocent Palestinians — an attack that would be used in thousands of TikTok videos as evidence that Israel is actually the genocidal party. Those calling for a ceasefire draw moral equivalence between a democratic state that takes active measures to limit civilian casualties in their attacks on military targets, and a terror state, which deliberately targets civilian areas in an attempt to maximize casualties.
Schramm laments the deaths of more than 7,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children. We should all mourn these deaths. But we must lay blame at the feet of the party most responsible: Hamas. Protocol I of the Geneva Convention expressly prohibits the use of human shields. Indeed, the entire purpose of the Geneva Convention is to maximize the protection of innocent civilians in war.
Recently, TikTok and Instagram were awash with news that an IDF aircraft destroyed a Gazan ambulance, allegedly killing 15 — if totalitarian terror state Hamas is to be believed. Unsurprisingly, Hamas has been using ambulances to smuggle combatants in and out of warzones, which is prohibited under Rule 29 of Customary International Humanitarian Law. Under such circumstances, an ambulance is therefore a lawful target. The decision to put women and children in front of genocidal, Jew-hating terrorists is not Israel’s. A ceasefire only incentivizes Hamas to use more Palestinians as human shields and only invites more casualties. If the goal is fewer Palestinian deaths in Gaza, then Hamas must be forcefully excised.
Most Americans are well-meaning in their desire to see the conflict in Gaza come to an end. But Israel’s retaliatory response to the horrific rape and murder of 1,400 Israelis is not perpetuating a “cycle of violence.” It is justifiable self-defense against a genocidal terror state hellbent on the total eradication of the world’s Jews. Anything less invites more of the same by Hamas.

His column on Gaza (“Gaza: ceasefire now!” Nov. 3 edition) is typical of so many other liberal voices who ignore the terrorism and atrocities Hamas inflicted. Babies that were beheaded and women and children that were intentionally targeted, yet do gooder liberals say stand down.
Israel is right in doing everything it can to terminate Hamas, and it does not need others telling it what to do.

A few days ago, an Israeli army spokesman uttered one of those absurdly ironic statements that are typical in the current conflict. He argued that Israel “had to attack Hamas” because they were “living on Israel’s doorstep.” When you steal someone’s house and evict them with brutal violence, it is not surprising to find them on your doorstep. Does that justify exterminating them or justify driving them into a different neighborhood? Most civilized people would say not.
Egypt is getting roundly criticized for not opening their Rafah border crossing. Their reasons are quite clear. First, they don’t want 2 million Palestinian refugees living on their border with Israel, and they don’t want to have continued Palestinian resistance staged from within their borders. That would inevitably lead to another Israeli/Egyptian war. Their second reason is perhaps more principled — they refuse to collaborate in the further ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people. This is why Hamas itself is urging residents of Gaza to remain. It is largely why they do remain.
In 1948, Israel brutally ethnically cleansed the Palestinian village of Deir Yassin. For years, Israel claimed that Arab authorities told Palestinians to flee. Israel claimed that their flight made the land Israel’s by default. There is no clear record of Arabs telling Palestinians to leave, but no Arab government wants to open themselves to the same false claims or manipulation.
There have been a lot of comparisons to 9/11 with regard to the Hamas attack and the Israeli response. It might give some much-needed perspective to rely on comparisons with smaller numbers. During a 10-year period in the mid 2000s, Palestinian rockets killed about 20 Israeli civilians. That is around two people a year. That is about how many Israeli people are killed yearly by snake bites. It is less than the number killed in the U.S. by fireworks as we celebrate Fourth of July (a single day). No one has ever called on the U.S. Air Force to stop Fourth of July celebrations. One credible article I just read said the recent number of deaths caused by Palestinian rocket fire was about one per 142 rockets. The number of rockets in 2011 was about 1,483 (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2021/05/13/faq-hamas-missiles/). The situation is getting worse but is hardly an “existential threat” as Israel claims, and it certainly doesn’t justify the horrific force Israel is bringing to bear on Gaza.
Recently, a lone gunman in a small town in Maine killed about 18 local residents with a legally purchased gun. It would have taken 2,556 Hamas rockets to kill all those people in Maine. The gunman did in an hour what it would have taken 10 years of Hamas rockets to accomplish. Yet there are no U.S. airstrikes in Maine. That would be madness!
Meanwhile, the death toll inflicted on Palestinian civilians in Gaza continues to grow astronomically. Over 7,000 Palestinians are now dead. Apparently, over 3,000 children are among them (dismembered somewhere in the rubble). How many more victims need to die before Israel reaches its mysterious “redemption point?” It is time to stop this madness.
The U.S. and Israel argue that a ceasefire would “only help Hamas.” The truth is it would mostly help the civilian population of Gaza, most of whom had nothing to do with the horrific Hamas attack. It would also help the hostages and the countries they come from by giving their negotiators time to arrange their release. It would even help Israel by giving their people time to hold back before committing their nation to a horrific, historic mistake.
In recent days, most of the leaders of Israeli intelligence and the military have taken responsibility for their failures. The exception is Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. He has led Israel for 13 years. His aggressive policy has been an abject failure and has probably created far more extremists than he ever eliminated. There is no sane reason the US should continue to support this approach.
It is time to let humanitarian aid into Gaza and to enforce a ceasefire now. A serious long-term peace deal should quickly follow. Period.

McDonald’s Israel said on its social media accounts last week that it has given thousands of free meals to Israel Defense Forces personnel. On Sunday, the franchise stated again that it was donating meals, “to all . . . murderers and molesters and rapists and pedophiles and child killers . . . “ [Emphasis I added.]
All smiles, Israel’s top restaurants are rallying to help IDF soldiers: Eyal Shani, Ariel Rosenthal and Uri Buri are all fuelling Israel’s heroes.
These people cannot be reformed. They are natural born killers.
But then, who owns the media? Who owns the microphone? The studios? The Botox and Girdle girls and boys manning the teleprompters, who pimps them out?

Now, 90% of the media in the United States is controlled by just six corporations: AT&T, CBS, Comcast, Disney, Newscorp and Viacom. This means that just 232 media executives are calling the shots for the vast majority of the information we are presented with, controlling a total Big Six net worth of over $430 billion.
It’s been no secret that Big Tech companies — the nickname for the enormous corporations like Facebook or Google — have come under fire recently for their controlling practices. While Facebook and other media giants sought to combat extremism and political misinformation on their platforms, specifically in light of the 2020 presidential election, Bill Baer and Caitlin Chin of Brookings remind us that this only demonstrated the power that social media giants hold over what we consume.

At an individual level, this may not appear to affect what’s presented in the news. Personally, I sometimes have a hard time seeing why a vague, distant-seeming corporation like Comcast would impact the traditionally reliable reporting of a single journalist at NBC News. At West, two-thirds of 63 students polled said they get most of their news from national organizations.

What are they saying over at the Harvard Political Review?
As a progressive Democrat, I may not seem like the most likely person to attribute a great deal of my political beliefs to my religious upbringing. But growing up in the tradition of Reform Judaism, my faith instilled in me values of generosity, open-mindedness, and a watchful eye toward oppression.
My synagogue, the same one I have attended for most of my life, puts a huge emphasis on social justice. Some of my earliest religious memories involve delivering Passover food to lower-middle class elderly Jews. Indeed, most of the volunteering I did growing up was organized by various Jewish organizations in the Chicago area. My religion taught me that we are all created in God’s image, and that we all deserve to be treated with respect. I also learned that the value of giving lay not in some emotional or heavenly reward for oneself, but in the happiness it provided for someone else. These lessons have translated into an urgent desire to make the world a better place, even at the expense of narrow self-interest.
I also attended a Jewish summer camp for six years. My last summer there, I was part of a bi-weekly seminar with the director of the camp. He was a Reform rabbi who grew up Orthodox, the strictest sect of Judaism, and one day he explained to us the reason for his conversion to the Reform movement. He said that, as a Reform Jew, he could observe all the same traditions as when he was Orthodox, but that he now had to decide why he was observing them and choose whether they made sense to him. My upbringing in the Reform tradition, in contrast to the popular caricature of religion as inherently opposed to critical thinking, in fact welcomed challenge and debate, and I became a more open-minded person for it.
Finally, those familiar with the Passover Seder will recognize a phrase that goes something like, “Remember that you were strangers in the land of Egypt.” The story of the Jews’ escape from slavery, at least in my household, always came with a command that we remember the stranger in our midst and inveigh against oppression wherever it may be. And the key saying, “Never forget,” contains a call to vigilant protection of others that we abandon at our, and humanity’s, peril. For these reasons and others, progressive politics and religion, or mine at least, have more in common than most people care to realize.
And if you cannot find it in your heart to feel sorrow for Israel as a nation, or the Jewish people as a wounded faith — and I truly hope that you can — at the very least grieve for the loss of humanity. The killing of civilians, whether in Israel, in Gaza, or anywhere else in the world is an unfathomable tragedy, an indefensible crime. In failing to acknowledge this entirely, the Palestinian Solidarity Committee, and all who stood by their statement, showed a disregard for the most fundamental principles of human rights.
This should be a time for healing. We should be able to come together as a university and condemn what is wrong and discuss what needs to be done. I have immense faith in the ability of open-minded, well-intentioned people to achieve powerful things. I believe our school has the capacity to exist above the divisiveness that fractures our world.
And yet, when I look towards my campus seeking comfort, all I feel is betrayal. Student groups whose events I had before supportively attended, mentors who I had previously looked to for guidance, and friends who I once shared dinners and dance floors with all watched the slaughter of my people, and used it as an opportunity to tell us that we had it coming.
There is nothing that can be done to heal the pain that your Jewish friends and classmates feel right now, but at the very least we should not be made to defend ourselves against further blows in our time of need. In a moment when we should be gathering in community, and collecting money and items to support those on the ground who are still reeling from the chaos, we are instead being forced to spend our time pushing back against those who are sowing further hate and distrust against us.
But even through our pain we will continue fighting back against the harmful ideas being spread because we know we will never be safe so long as they persist. Because we have gone through this before. And we will go through this again. Until the world listens.

In the long term, the biggest goal of our ruling elites is to succeed at crushing all the political elements in the USA that have revolutionary potential; those being the illiberal elements. Not all illiberal groups and people are contributing to revolutionary progress at present, and not all of them will choose the revolutionary side; yet though not all non-liberals are allies of the class struggle, all allies of the class struggle are illiberal. And the struggle has far more allies (or potential allies) in this category than today’s insularly focused “left” believes; there are plenty of individuals in the armed services, the religious communities, and the libertarian or conservative elements which are open to at least assisting the antiwar movement. Which is enough of a reason for the state to view them as an existential threat.
Some of these forces have already been getting consistently anti-imperialist enough for the imperial state to view them as decidedly threatening; the antiwar wing of the Libertarian Party has made the organization opposed to aid for both Ukraine and Israel, angering the org’s former big donors and those who want to make libertarianism into a pro-imperialist ideology. At some point, our government is going to come to see this wing and the other illiberal elements as big enough of a threat that they must be destroyed by any means necessary; including through the kinds of violence that the empire has used in its drone wars.
We know that such escalations in the class conflict are inevitable because the rise of this movement can only continue. This is the start of a process where the same ideological and cultural groups that modern leftists often blankedly dismiss increasingly embrace the fight against U.S. hegemony. Most of the MAGA base supports a ceasefire in Gaza, which represents a break from the Ben Shapiro types who seek to get all conservatives behind Zionism’s genocide. There’s emerged a current of Christians who’ve embraced socialism and anti-imperialism, as represented by Caleb Maupin’s project to bring more religious people into his socialist organizing operation.
When combined with the work that the Uhuru organization is doing, wherein the org is bringing members of the Black working class into the struggle, these projects are capable of building a sufficient mass base for revolt. This is because all the orgs I’ve talked about are operating in unison; they’re either directly part of the same coalition, or in Uhuru’s case adjacent to that coalition. They aren’t able to be broken up from each other, like the state wishes were the case; so the different demographics they’re reaching out to are being brought increasingly together.
That these developments represent so much hope for the cause is the same reason why we can expect our government to intensify its war on dissent. The DOJ’s indictments of Uhuru on “Russian interference” charges are supposed to create the precedent for unconstitutionally crushing all the formations that share Uhuru’s commitment to the cause. And as these attacks intensify, they’ll be sold to the people through the same mass manipulation methods that our government has used while justifying its “war on terror.”
What will we all come home to now that Israel and USA are hell bent on global war.

With the fall of the USSR in 1991, India sought a new alignment with the United States and was informed – as a senior Indian diplomat told me twenty years ago – that the road to Washington had to go through Tel Aviv.
Full normalization with Israel in 1992 followed – after the Indian nuclear weapons test in 1998 – with purchases of Israeli weapons systems (the tests prevented the US arms industry from exporting directly to India, so the systems were sold via joint ventures between the US and Israeli arms manufacturers).
With the rise of the Hindu right in India over the past decade, India’s government began to collaborate with Israeli intelligence services to suppress the insurgency in Kashmir.
The Indian government’s muted reaction to the violence of Israel – disregarding the large protests in the country for Palestine – is not motivated any longer by a desire to appease the United States. This is not an outlier of the new mood in the Global South. In fact, it proves the point because India’s government is operating – as Jaishankar said regarding Ukraine – based on “our long-term interests,” which include the purchase of weapons systems from Israel.

“The students were welcomed to partner with a recognized HLS student organization, each of which may reserve a table in the appropriate location,” Neal added.

Wednesday’s encounter comes amid national controversy surrounding free speech and activism related to the Israel-Hamas war at Harvard and other college campuses. Students and administrators alike have faced intense backlash from alumni, donors, and affiliates across the political spectrum.
Responding to the incident, Law Students for a Free Palestine, an organization of students from 38 law schools across the country, released a statement that alleged Harvard students had been “uniquely targeted by repression.”
According to the statement, handing out flyers and displaying posters are protected in the HLS Handbook of Academic Policies.
“Picketing in an orderly way or distributing literature outside the meeting is acceptable unless it impedes access to the meeting,” per a section of the school’s handbook cited in Ball and Monroe’s Wednesday email.

In an Instagram story on Thursday, McDonald’s said that it has been donating “tens of thousands of meals,” across Israel over the past few days during the ongoing conflict.
It wrote, according to a translation from Hebrew to English by Insider,
“McDonald’s donated and continues to donate tens of thousands of meals to IDF units, the police, hospitals, residents around the Strip and all rescue forces. We continue donating thousands of meals daily to our forces across the country. In addition to a 50% discount to soldiers and security forces who come to our branches.”

It feels like Gaza has been sent back to the Middle Ages.
There is no gas or electricity. Israel has cut off food and water supplies. The struggle for Gaza’s 2.3 million people is now simply to survive.
Besides water, finding flour to make bread is a challenge. And it is only the start. You have to find somewhere to bake it. Not easy, when everything is destroyed and most people are displaced.
Coming back to his house on October 7, world-renowned activist Issa Amro was dragged away by 15 armed Israelis, blindfolded, gagged, and cuffed so tightly he now needs an operation on his hands. The settlers and soldiers kept him imprisoned for days, beating and torturing him, constantly simulating his execution.
Speaking with MintPress News, Amro told the story of what life is like for Palestinians living in the West Bank city of Hebron. “In my city where I live now, since October 7, there is a curfew,” he told Mnar Adley and Alan MacLeod.
But this curfew is far more restrictive than others. Palestinian families – those who have not already fled the genocidal Israeli violence – are given only six hours a week to leave their homes. They are not even allowed out into their own yards. This means that school has stopped, work has ended, and life is on pause.
In those six hours, Palestinian families must buy all their food, pick up essentials such as medicine and conduct any social activities. But being outside is dangerous, as they have to pass though multiple checkpoints with armed guards and AI smart shooters pointing guns at them. Violence from vigilante settler groups is also a danger.
“It’s scary to walk alone between armed soldiers and armed settlers, all of them pointing their guns at you. Then, when you come back, it takes them five to ten minutes to search every person,” Amro said, revealing that the guards wanted to go so far as to cut open his potatoes and tomatoes to check for “weapons.”
“It’s a kind of jail” right now, Amro said, although he notes that being in jail is considerably safer than being a Palestinian in Hebron right now.

“You see pastors talking about individual people being blessed if they support Israel, whether that’s voting for politicians that say they support Israel, or actually giving money to Israel or touring Israel, which is contributing to the economy. I also see this on a national level. You see a lot of rhetoric around the decline of American society or declining American power abroad being tied to insufficient support for Israel or consideration of Israel’s interests.”

Hundreds of people were left stranded on the tarmac in Washington, D.C., after bus drivers refused to take them to the March for Israel on Tuesday, according to a rabbi.
The March for Israel brought over 100,000 people to the nation’s capital in a show of solidarity for Israel and to call attention to the hostages that are still being held by Hamas. While the event was peaceful and garnered support from legislators of both major political parties, several rabbis said getting to the rally was a harrowing journey after their buses never showed up.
David Kurzman, senior director of community affairs at the Jewish Federation of Detroit, told reporters on a call that it was a “historic day” for the Jewish community that was marred by the experience with the bus drivers.
Kurzman wouldn’t say which bus company was involved or who was responsible for coordinating the transportation. But he said he was informed people called in sick when they became aware of the assignment.
“In the way that this action prevented community members, proud Jewish Americans, from exercising their freedom to speak, protest, assemble, gather today at the nation’s capital, that to me was a malicious act,” Kurzman said.
Kurzman stopped short of calling it an “act of antisemitism,” but said it was an act targeting the Jewish community.

After repeatedly bombing the Al-Shifa hospital, depriving it of power and medicines, opening fire on it, killing doctors, nurses and patients, letting premature babies die from lack of ventilators, and forcing surgeons to carry out operations without pain relief, Israel has proven these actions were entirely justified. This is because it has located the base and tunnel network that, according to old media reports, Israel built under Al-Shifa hospital in 1983.
After courageously battling an elite guard of three-year-olds armed with assault rifles who yelled: “Death to the infidels” as they opened fire, the IDF headed down a secret access point called a “stairway” with red hand-prints on the walls and the words: “Do not proceed,” apparently written in blood.
Israel’s fearless soldiers did indeed proceed, not knowing what horrors might await them, and that’s when they discovered a dusty old room with the words: “Secret underground Hamas command centre,” written on the wall. A shelf contained books entitled: “How to launch stray rockets from graveyards,” and: “Tricking Israel into blowing up human shields,” as well as the world’s largest collection of “Mein Kampf for babies”.
Even worse, the room contained all of the fuel and medicine that Israel had kindly given to the hospital because it wanted to save all of the civilians it had chosen to attack for no reason. There was a note beside the stash which read: “Haha, our stupid hospital isn’t getting the things it needs so we can make Israel look bad when they rain bombs and open fire on it, day in, day out.”
Further searching revealed an address book lying open on the reception desk, containing the details of every member of Hamas. The list included every civilian in Gaza, every member of Doctors Without Borders, every representative of the United Nations, every journalist from Al-Jazeera, and Jeremy Corbyn. This explains so much.

The miraculous thing here, the rarest of silver linings, is that some people recognize the evil in killing Gazans AND in killing Israelis. That’s almost unheard of. Never before in my experience or in my knowledge of history has there been a war where any significant number of people expected to be on one side have declared both sides to be in the wrong. It’s such a rarity, that it hasn’t developed the rhetorical armor to protect it from various cartoonish criticisms, like the idea that for both sides to be in the wrong they must be exactly equally in the wrong, or that for both sides to be in the wrong all the victims must be to blame and the governments be exonerated, or that for both sides to be in the wrong whichever side a particular person opposes must be in the right.
I want to quote for you an email I received recently in reply to an email from World BEYOND War about peace efforts around the world:
“I unsubscribed but am appalled at you propagating Hamas terrorists propoganda [sic] lies! The gaza [sic] Israel massacre is 100% Hamas terrorists fault! It’s beyond reprehensible that the world is so full of hate and anti Semitism that they unquestioningly support propaganda and lies of hamas/terrorists!”
You’ll notice that support for the genocide in Gaza very often takes a different form than simply supporting genocide in Gaza. Most often it takes the form of changing the conversation to the mass murder of Israelis by Hamas. It also takes the form of blaming Hamas for keeping soldiers or weapons near civilians, thereby supposedly forcing the Israeli government to kill everyone. Or it takes the form of simply denying that it’s happening because, even though there are endless reports and videos and photos, the Hamas government agrees that it’s happening and therefore it isn’t. Or it isn’t happening because the Israeli government is doing it and therefore it is antisemitic to admit it’s happening. This is a favorite accusation from some people who are actually horribly antisemitic.
The various means of excusing the genocide have one thing in common: the belief that one side is 100% right and the other 100% to blame. If you carefully observe the actual world, even locally, even in your own house, there’s almost never anything for which only one party is 100% to blame. If we can’t get rid of an absurd justice system that behaves as if a conviction (even a false one) fixes a crime and exonerates every other person on earth, we can at least stop thinking like prosecutors. Blame is not finite or simple. And mass murder is not justifiable because it’s against a population whose government you have blamed.
I’ve spoken at events in recent days at which people yelled at me that Gaza is an open-air prison, that killing Israelis isn’t killing Israelis because it’s a jailbreak. Well, of course it’s an open-air prison, but killing people can’t be made into not killing people just because it’s something else too. The people of Gaza and the people of the world who have failed to adequately support them live in a world in which nonviolent action is more successful than violent. Killing Israelis remains evil even though you know it’s going to provoke killing Gazans many times over. In fact it’s more evil because of that, even if you release an erudite statement about the long-term strategies of anticolonial asymmetric warfare.
At some of the same events I’ve had people demand to know what it is I want the Israelis to do, surrender to their enemies? But to think such a question is to utterly accept apartheid. When the United States faced the need to end Jim Crow, it was not a need to surrender to its enemies, but to integrate them, to become a nation that included more people on equal terms all as fellow people, neighbors, friends, companions. This was unthinkable to those who insisted on a white nation. In Israel it is unthinkable to those who insist on a Jewish nation. But there’s an answer to that. It’s not an easy answer, even if it’s easy to say it. The answer is to stop thinking of a Jewish nation and absurdly pretending that such a thing can be a democracy. The answer is to set about the hard work of accepting everyone as human beings in a wider and richer, and less violent and hateful state, with freedom of religion, assembly, speech, and of private and cultural behavior.
A two-state solution sounds more plausible, except that it assumes antagonistic apartheid states harboring bitter resentments, and one of them existing in isolated little hamlets dominated by the other state. We need to reconsider what’s more and what’s less plausible. Endless wars would be less plausible without the U.S. arsenal of apartheid, or with U.S. willingness to democratize the United Nations or to join the rules based order of treaties and courts.
Last weekend in Madison, Wisconsin, I debated a professor from the university there on the topic of the war in Ukraine. As expected, he favored more weapons, claimed not to be aware that the U.S. and UK had blocked peace negotiations, spoke as if the 2014 coup didn’t exist, believed Russia’s imperial tendencies erased any role played by NATO’s expansion (no matter how many NATO commentators predicted it in real-time), etc. But what struck me about his argument was that for the most part he didn’t say what he thought at all, he said what political scientists supposedly all thought en masse, and what game theory thinks, and what the supposed logic of the bargaining process that is warfare dictates. And amazingly, every single thing that these impersonal entities thought lined up exactly with what corporate television and newspaper companies think — even if it was perhaps a bit behind the very recent growing acceptance of the existence of the hopeless stalemate.
This professor was relatively smart and informed and well-spoken, yet seemingly not the least bit ashamed to effectively communicate that he was engaged in group-think. He didn’t use that term. He might respond that the wisdom of a large academic community is greater than that of an individual. But first accepting war and then relating what people trying to imitate computers think will happen next in a world accepting war is neither science nor morality. It’s a cop-out. And it plays into the notion of a proper way to think, in a moment when all sorts of improper ways to think are being banned and punished in the name of democracy. So, I thank you for allowing me to say exactly what I think and hope that you will do the same.
All those other “freedom fighters” are valorized, but never the Palestinian fighter. And, Hamas tried political solutions, even the shitty two-state solution Hamas supported, but they were not listened to.

Omer Bartov is a professor of Holocaust and genocide studies at Brown. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has cited him as one of the world’s leading specialists on the subject of genocide. Bartov is the author of numerous books, including, most recently, Genocide, the Holocaust and Israel-Palestine: First-Person History in Times of Crisis.
I was a soldier in the IDF, in the Israeli Defense Forces, between 1973 and 1976. And so, as a young soldier, the first thing that I experienced was the trauma, the huge surprise of the Arab — the Egyptian and Syrian attack on Israel on October 6th, 1973. And I should say that when the Hamas attack on Israel occurred on the 7th of October, 2023, 50 years and a day later, that was quite traumatic, I think, for myself and many members of my generation. And we can talk further about why it was so traumatic.
But in the course of my service, I also served in the northern Sinai, and the command post that I belonged to was in Gaza. And so I would go quite often to Gaza, which was then — had a population of about 350,000, was poor, hopeless and congested. And since then, of course, now we have between two and two-and-a-half million people living in Gaza, which is much poorer, much more congested and whose population is much more desperate, and has been desperate for a long time, considering that it’s been under Israeli siege now for 16 years. So, for me, the lack of progress for all those years in somehow resolving this terrible humanitarian problem is very personal.
And I should add one thing. I was usually not employed as a soldier in occupation duties, but there was a time that I was. And I have very distinct recollection of that, leading my platoon through an Egyptian city at the time, with people looking at us from behind the windows, obviously not wanting us to be there, obviously afraid of us, and us walking on the street obviously feeling uncomfortable being where we are and being somewhat afraid of what might happen to us as we were marching then. That sort of sense of what being an occupation soldier means stayed with me all those years, and it’s always made me — has been one of the reasons, a sort of more personal rather than political or analytical reason, why I’ve always thought that it’s time to end this occupation, for which we called in that August 4th petition, two months before the Hamas attack on Israel.
That letter: “In a world where powerful states are becoming more brazen in their impunity, it is crucial to give voice to those who resist. Along with nearly 800 lawyers, scholars, and practitioners, representing a diverse range of perspectives from academia and practice, I have signed a statement warning of the possibility of genocide in Gaza, Palestine. This open letter underscores the gravity of the situation, pinpointing multiple instances where the state of Israel appears to have breached international law, in full public view and frequently with the endorsement of a certain political class and a servile media. It is imperative we address these transgressions and hold accountable those who act with disregard for international law and for basic human decency, however flawed these might be. Every week we are part of a demonstration where we live, one we started, for peace and justice. the main theme these days is Palestine. When my doctor asks how I am doing, he wants to know about my health. If there is any time, I make sure to tell him Israel’s murderous brutality is driving me crazy, as it seems to be to you too. There is also a time and place for everything. If I include a statement about Palestine when I pay my phone bill that is silly. What is the point?
Our once yearly mailing is about our films, about the only thing we ever do that is just about us, it is not a general statement about our politics or about what is happening in the world in general – which we offer in many other arenas. It is not a platform for social and environmental proponents, simply a report on what we have been doing – which is of interest to many many people.
If you have ideas for a film we might make, please tell us, we are all ears. Your response was rude, your tone nasty, and that kind of crap directed toward comrades does not build solidarity, does not build a movement, quite the opposite. So I rightly called you on it.

What do we know about Israel’s incursions and the resistance’s abilities to fight them back yeah I mean that’s it’s always hard to come on after people are giving those testimonies about life that’s going on . . . I find just straight off that I I find it unspeakable that Israel’s first targets of this ground operation were the hospitals. I mean we showed a map earlier where you can clearly see the incursion zones and then the attacks on hospitals so the Israeli Army has attacked sniper positions across from hospitals shooting into hospitals beforethey lifted up one trap and walked into a tunnel so I think that gives you an idea of what this war is about. You can see those hospitals in the north there . . they’re basically um eliminated they’re wiping out the hospitals. They’re moving all of the people that are taking shelter at the hospital they’re killing people inside the hospital from outside the hospital. And like those testimonies from Hind Khoudary said that people were being sniped as they’re leaving the hospital.
They created created utter panic because people believed that you know even with their experience in all of these wars, people believed that Shifa the largest hospital in Gaza would kind of be the last place that you could be in Gaza and Israel flipped that script and made it the opposite. They made it the first place targeted for eradication before they’re able to even move into Gaza City. They move in from the periphery and raid which is the words that they use that they Raid inside Gaza City so they’re not actually moving and staying inside Gaza City.
They’re raiding Gaza City to attack hospitals as the principal objective of their ground operation — a ground operation that they say the Israelis say they used. 5,000 air strikes just in the two weeks of the ground operation 3,300 from airplanes 900 from Attack Helicopters and they’re using drones. People talked about drones shooting at people leaving the hospitals so there’s no access to and from the hospitals at all, and they’re laying Siege to the primary care facilities that people have you know that are living in the most desperate situations.
That’s what their army has decided: is the principal military objective in the Gaza Strip at this point. I think you know we talked on this program for a while about the cowardice of Israel and I want to say that on Friday watching this happen on Friday and Saturday was unbelievable. I couldn’t believe what we were watching. The utter cowardice of attacking hospitals in the way that they did, leaving people to die, when they don’t have the courage to stand and fight in any of these areas face to face with soldiers, but are willing to attack intensive care and Cardiology units and to cut you know neonatal premature babies off from their access.
Like the brutality of that, even after all these decades covering this conflict, was shocking to me. It was shocking to my colleagues, talking to them on Friday about what was happening. The panic that ensued from a mechanized infantry attack on an unguarded hospital. For all this Hamas command and control garbage, the hospital was you virtually unguarded because it’s a civilian facility with no military purpose, and that was their first Target.

Article IX Disputes between the Contracting Parties relating to the interpretation, application or fulfilment of the present Convention, including those relating to the responsibility of a State for genocide or for any of the other acts enumerated in article III, shall be submitted to the International Court of Justice at the request of any of the parties to the dispute.
Note that here “parties to the dispute” means the states disputing the facts of genocide, not the parties to the genocide/conflict. Any single state party is able to invoke the Convention.

Today, the IDF’s soldiers and the 8200 can likely draw on a menagerie of tools from NSO and its newer competitors—and so can other regimes, Loewenstein said (Loewenstein was based in East Jerusalem between 2016 and 2020.)

We kept walking, stopping, then walking, the soldiers a constant threat.

But I did not feel the same. A piece of my heart was left in the city, and I may never be able to go back to get it. It is impossible for me to imagine I abandoned my father’s house, left it alone. He built that home with his own hands, and when he died in 2012, it stayed with the family. Our house in my family is something so precious to us. We do not know if our house is still standing or not, but we know that we are not in it.

Israel’s goal might be unrealistic, considering what happened in Afghanistan with the Taliban, now in power again after 20 years of war intended to eliminate it. Refugees from Afghanistan have sought safety in other lands.

Fuck them: Palestinian poet Fadwa Tuqan is best known for her work on the experiences of Palestinian refugees, particularly the feelings of displacement that came with being expelled from the homeland and the dream of returning home.
Born in Nablus, her poetry was largely informed by the Balfour Declaration, which was announced in 1917, the year of her birth.
As part of the declaration, the British government promised the Jewish people a homeland in Palestine despite its existing Arab population.

Another big focus of Tuqan’s poems was the Nakba (Catastrophe), which resulted in the displacement of more than 700,000 Palestinians to make way for the state of Israel in 1948.

Hull-House was an innovative community center that provided a wide range of services and classes for the neighborhood’s working class residents. Though it wasn’t the first settlement in the United States, it became the most well-known and influential, largely due to Addams’ skill at creating a community and communicating the ideals of settlement workers.
What made Hull-House different was that Addams and Starr listened to the people that they wanted to help. While they began with ideas of poetry readings, art classes and educational opportunities for the working class, they quickly found that their neighbors needed more practical help — day care for their children, help learning English, and spaces to hold meetings. Addams argued that the settlement needed to work with their community, listen to its needs and provide what help it could. This was a break with older charity work, where programs were designed for the poor. Hull-House was also unique among settlements because though it was made up of both men and women, it created a unique community where college-trained professional women were able to flourish. Women like Grace Abbott, Florence Kelley, and Alice Hamilton worked with Addams and Starr at Hull-House and brought Progressive ideas for reform to the immediate community and then to the city and nation.
Addams used Hull-House as a platform for Progressive reforms. The settlement movement grew rapidly in the United States and elevated public awareness of Addams and her work. She had her hands in many of the major reform movements of the day, child labor reform, sanitation, factory conditions, recreation and safe spaces for children, and efforts to ensure that democracy worked for all, including the poor, immigrant, and female. Along with other settlement workers and Progressive reformers, Addams helped to redefine the role of government in a modern industrial society and helped define the profession of social work. Addams believed strongly in mediation as a way to solve problems. Her insistence on cooperation and compromise was uniquely Addams– she saw that when people with different perspectives allowed all voices to be heard, a just solution could be achieved.
Addams believed in woman suffrage and dedicated her time to lecturing and lobbying for suffrage at the city, state and national level. She was a vice-president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, and wrote a series of columns for the Ladies Home Journal and other magazines to popularize the idea. In additional to her suffrage work, Addams spoke on a wide range of topics and published many of her lectures in book format. These include Democracy and Social Ethics (1902), Newer Ideals of Peace (1907), The Spirit of Youth and the City Streets(1909), Twenty Years at Hull-Housewith Autobiographical Notes (1910), and A New Conscience and an Ancient Evil (1912).
In 1912, Addams stepped into national politics, supporting the presidential campaign of Theodore Roosevelt on the Progressive Party ticket. Here she found her commitment to compromise tested as she faced opposition from members of the suffrage, peace, and settlement movements over her endorsement. Her commitment to woman suffrage and Progressive reforms convinced her that supporting Roosevelt, despite some of his stances, was the best way to advance change.
Addams’ interest in mediation and peace became all-consuming in the second half of her life. With the outbreak of World War I, Addams worked with peace activists around the world to keep the United States out of the conflict, encourage the United States to help broker peace, and help create conditions for a just peace. Addams, working with the Woman’s Peace Party and the International Congress of Women built both national and international drives to pressure governments and public opinion in favor of negotiation. Theodore Roosevelt, pushing for preparedness, castigated her calls for peace. Despite her efforts, the United States joined the war, and once that happened, Addams was vilified in the press as a traitor to her country, a naive unrealistic reformer, and merely an emotional woman. Even some of her allies at Hull-House distanced themselves from her during the war years as she was tarred as a radical and subversive.
Addams continued on despite the name-calling and the loss of popularity. She was named the president of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom and presided over six International Congresses of Women from 1915 until her death. Addams traveled the world, inspiring women with the idea that they had a special mission to lead the world to peace. She believed that peace went hand in hand with social justice and representation from all members of society. She was among the co-founders of the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Public opinion began shifting back in Addams’ favor and by 1931 she was once again a revered public figure, the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
Jane Addams never married, and carried on close companionate relationships with Ellen Gates Starr and then Mary Rozet Smith. Addams died on May 21, 1935 from abdominal cancer. In her New York Times obituary, she was remembered as “the world’s best-known and best-loved woman.” (May 22, 1935).

Former President Trump suggested in a new interview that the war between Israel and Hamas will just have to “play out” despite concerns about rising civilian casualties.
