Have you ever noticed how in all the political commentary and debates since 2001, the truth about what happened on September 11, 2001, is never seriously discussed? It is just assumed that the government’s version of events is true, with minor, limited hangouts, such as the Saudi’s financing of some of the alleged hijackers.

By September 2001, George Bush Jr. was in major political trouble in his first year in office. “9/11” saved his skin and made him into a national hero with a bullhorn in the wreckage of the Twin Towers. It allowed him to pursue his endless war on terror and win a second term even while destroying Iraq. Obama, picking up Bush’s baton while offering the usual phony critiques of his policies, quickly bailed out Wall Street and the banks and proceeded to attack seven Muslim countries.

In 2026, Donald Trump is in major political trouble as the mid-term elections approach in his second term. He is caught in a quagmire with his losing war with Iran. His patron and blackmailer Israel, has him up against the wall. Russia and China, ruled by far smarter leaders, are confounding him. His popularity has plummeted. All indications are that he is a man at the end of his tether, crazed, fascistic, and desperate. People like him do insane things. Nuclear weapons are at his disposal.

As the daily news makes clear, mentally unstable, desperate people do evil things. They take knives, guns, clubs, and walk out on an ordinary day and slaughter innocent people on a street, in a school, on a subway, everywhere and anywhere. Nuclear weapons can kill a few more, and we are ruled by madmen.

While pre-emancipated Jews were at ease with their ethno-religious identity, the French Revolution, emancipation, and secularisation introduced complexity to identity issues for European Jews. Since then, secular Jews have found it difficult or even impossible to consolidate their tribal identity within the emerging universal discourse around them. We are confronting a quantum leap–an evasive identity that is morphing constantly. It moves rapidly within its kosher trinity field; it is everywhere and nowhere. The reason for this is that the Kosher Trinity makes it very difficult, or even impossible, to criticise Jewish politics, ideology and religion. The Kosher Trinity allows Jews to boast about their cultural symptoms and great achievements while claiming offense when any of these symptoms are discussed by others. How Amanda Mustard Confronted More Than Her Pedophile Grandfather in ‘Great Photo, Lovely Life’

“I made this thing to be this Rorschach test for people,” Mustard told Jezebel of her HBO documentary, which is a rare revelation of family trauma.

What emerged is a film that manages to be grim, not glib; incisive instead of incendiary; and a conclusion that offers both answers and salient questions about intergenerational trauma, women’s complicity in men’s wrongdoing, and the ways forgiveness can harm rather than heal.

“In the evangelical faith that my family adheres to, not forgiving is equal to the sin that was committed against you, which is insane. But it’s also a milder form of victim-blaming.”

Mustard is well aware that Great Photo, Lovely Life could’ve been the kind of true crime retelling you’d find on Investigation Discovery or Netflix. “My pedophile grandpa…” Mustard says, imagining an alternative, Abducted in Plain Sight-esque take on her family’s story. But with a rich archive of photographs and home movies, Great Photo Lovely Life surpasses any ripped-from-the-headlines salaciousness and becomes a searing rumination not of a “monster” but a truly reprehensible human whose actions had a ruinous effect on innumerable lives.

“We so rarely hear the perspective of a perpetrator,” Mustard said of the importance of confronting her grandfather onscreen. “As a survivor myself, it is weirdly healing to see somebody own it. There’s value in that. The whole question that led me to that interview in the first place was, ‘How did we get here?’”

Mustard recalled asking her grandfather, while interviewing him in the Florida retirement facility where he was living, if there was anybody that he ever felt like he could talk to about it.

Letourneau and Malone spent years working on a book to highlight the thing that the Epstein case could have potentially started a conversation about: child sexual abuse.

The title comes from a sobering statistic: One in five kids will experience sexual abuse before they turn 18. Numbers like that are why the authors treat this as a public health crisis rather than a crime story, and why Malone keeps returning to how ordinary it is. “It affects one in five kids,” he said. “It is so prevalent.”

• Family Connections: Her late sister, Jessica C. Steinger, had funeral services held at the Tifereth Israel Synagogue and was buried at the Jewish Glendale Cemetery, with the family requesting memorial contributions to the Jewish Federation of Greater Des Moines.
• Extended Family: Her uncle, Lawrence L. Ladin, was actively involved with Des Moines’ Temple B’nai Jeshurun.
• Professional Background: Beyond her personal heritage, Shayna Steinger is a former Foreign Service Officer for the U.S. Department of State, where she served from 1999 to 2016, including a role as the Chief of the Political and Economic Section at the U.S. Embassy in Yemen.

Kit: Adding to the mystery, 12 of the 14 visas were approved by a single consular official, named Shayna Steinger. Almost immediately after being appointed to the Jeddah consulate in July 2000 fresh out of Columbia University, she began rubberstamping applications of future 9/11 hijackers. At the time, the consulate’s approach to issuing visas was strict, specifically due to local “terrorism” concerns. Internal guidelines stated applicants – particularly young male Saudis – should always be interviewed in person, and have clear grounds for travel.

However, Steinger personally took it upon herself to reverse this policy. Moreover, she issued visas to future 9/11 hijackers despite their applications frequently being incomplete or error-strewn, based on forged documents, and their contents giving ample grounds for suspicion. Steinger nonetheless interviewed Hani Hanjour, who purportedly piloted Flight 77, which struck the Pentagon. Afterwards, she rejected his application for a three-year US visa, due to apparent doubts over his stated purposes in the country. Nonetheless, Steinger approved Hanjour’s renewed application two weeks later.

In ensuing official investigations, she offered wildly contradictory accounts of why the hijackers’ visas were granted. In Hanjour’s case, Steinger initially claimed he provided requested supporting documentation. She subsequently admitted he actually hadn’t, but Hanjour’s “middle class” background purportedly led her to conclude he was trustworthy. Thanks to the court filing, we know in reality future 9/11 hijackers were granted entry to the US so they could be recruited by the CIA upon arrival, suggesting Steinger was acting on Agency orders.
