Arthur Maillefert was no angel.
By the age of 22, the mustachioed troublemaker from New Jersey had been run out of Dade County for theft, convicted of the armed robbery of a Daytona Beach gas station and displayed a Houdini-like ability to escape any restraints police could conceive.
But the gruesomeness of his death, on the most rain-soaked night Jacksonville had seen in a dozen years, shocked the city’s polite society.
The trial of those charged with it gripped the nation. In Jacksonville, citizens lined up outside the Duval courthouse for hours, with some eventually selling their seats to those longing to be a part of the most sensational trial to hit the area.
Years later, the movie “Cool Hand Luke” used the designation of Road Prison 36 for the fictitious Florida chain gang camp where Paul Newman underwent his travails.
The real Road Camp 36 was no Hollywood set. It was in southern Duval County and known as Sunbeam Prison Camp. Those who languished there described it as “a hell hole on Earth.”
On Friday, June 3, 1932, after a short and violent life, Maillefert was shoved into Road Camp 36’s “sweatbox,” a cramped wooden shed used to mete out punishment. The road camp’s warden wrapped a chain around his neck and nailed wooden stocks around his feet, as rain pounded like fists on the metal roof.
When a camp trusty opened the door less than an hour later, Maillefert’s body hung lifeless from that chain.
The camp’s warden, guards and some prisoners claimed Maillefert committed suicide by self-strangulation.
A grand jury disagreed, and the warden, George Washington Courson, and a guard, Solomon Higginbotham, were arrested on charges of first-degree murder.
History has made Palestinians cynical. For generations, waiting for justice has yielded nothing but rising body counts.

Based on personal experience, I can vouch for the criticism of military impunity in poisoning people without their knowledge or consent. I thought I’d take this opportunity to share that story.
I served on the school board of North Hanover, NJ in the late 1980’s – early 1990’s, including during the first Gulf War.
The local school system is a K – 6 District, with 4 schools. Three (3) of the schools are on the McGuire AFB base and 1 is in town. Federal military impact aid paid almost 100% of the school budget, which kept local property taxes the lowest in the State.
An Air Force full Colonel served on the school board in an ex-officio capacity.
One night, during the Board’s Executive Session, the Air Force Colonel briefed the Board on sampling of school drinking water fountains. Results showed extremely high levels of lead.
The Colonel said that the Air Force was managing the situation and he requested that this information remain confidential.
My fellow Board members agreed with that request.
I objected and said it was improper to discuss this issue in Executive Session and that it would be a violation of the Open Public Meetings Act to keep it secret. I said I would not comply. The Colonel and my fellow board members objected and strongly urged me to comply with executive session secrecy rules.
When the Board reconvened in public session, I immediately told the public about the high lead levels and the attempt to keep the matter secret. Parents and teachers were pissed off, to put it mildly.
After the meeting, the Colonel got in my face, almost chest to chest. His face was blood red.
He poked his finger hard into my chest several times as he said “We take care of our own. We don’t need DEP and EPA bureaucrats telling us wha to do!”
Curiously, the next morning when I arrived at work (around 9 am) there was a memo on my chair from the DEP Ethics Officer.
The memo criticized my remarks at the School Board meeting because I had not included a disclaimer that my views were my own and not those of DEP.
Because of this failure, the memo claimed I had violated DEP’s ethics code. To remedy the violation, I was directed to read a public statement at the next board meeting with an apology and the caveat that my views were my own and not DEP’s.
How the hell did the DEP ethics officer, who reports to the DEP Commissioner, get that information and management directive to issue the memo to me from 10 pm the night before?
How did the memo get written and on my desk so fast?
Obviously, the Colonel made some phone calls.

The woman who shook her head is a woman named Danita, who we also followed in the film. When we met Danita, she was actually healthy, but shortly thereafter, she was diagnosed with cancer that honestly had metastasized so much in her body that I don’t think they could even say what the organ of – you know, what organ it started in.
