Lawrence H. Summers once served as Harvard’s president. He told Bloomberg that Harvard’s antisemitism row would be as tough to manage as the Vietnam War.
“Perhaps more difficult,” Summer said.
An ex-Harvard president says that managing the ongoing row about on-campus antisemitism is a serious reckoning for the Ivy League university.
“This is as difficult a moment for elite higher education as any moment since the Vietnam War. Perhaps more difficult,” former treasury secretary Lawrence H. Summers previously expressed disappointment at Gay’s initial silence after Hamas launched a vicious terrorist attack on Israel in October.
“The silence from Harvard’s leadership, so far, coupled with a vocal and widely reported student groups’ statement blaming Israel solely, has allowed Harvard to appear at best neutral towards acts of terror against the Jewish state of Israel,” Summers wrote on X on October 9, referencing a pro-Hamas letter that was signed by a group of Harvard student organizations.
“I am sickened. I cannot fathom the Administration’s failure to disassociate the University and condemn this statement,” Summers said in a follow-up post. [Like so many Jews, racist as hell — do not believe that the American Jews love those American Africans!]
Gay eventually condemned Hamas’ attack on October 10, noting in her statement that the controversial letter didn’t represent Harvard or its leadership.
Summers declined to comment when contacted by Business Insider.
Harvard has found itself in the spotlight in the past two months for its approach toward on-campus antisemitism. The university’s president Claudine Gay has faced growing calls to resign following her congressional testimony on the topic last week.
During the hearing, Gay was repeatedly asked if calling for the genocide of Jews violated Harvard’s rules on bullying and harassment.
“It can be, depending on the context,” Gay replied.
Gay’s response drew widespread backlash from politicians as well as business executives such as fund manager Bill Ackman and Pfizer chief Adam Bourla.
“In her short tenure as President, Claudine Gay has done more damage to the reputation of Harvard University than any individual in our nearly 500-year history,” Ackman wrote in his third open letter to Harvard’s leadership, where he called for Gay’s removal.
Che Guevara’s visit to Gaza in 1959 was the first sign of transforming the Zionist colonization of Palestine from a regional conflict to a global struggle against colonialism. The trigger was the Bandung conference in 1955 and the resulting Non-Aligned Movement, whose members has just recently shaken the yoke of foreign domination. The stature of Nasser, as a world leader in the struggle against Imperialism and colonialism, brought world leaders to see for themselves the devastating results of the ethnic cleansing of Palestine, clearly demonstrated in Gaza refugee camps.
Gaza Strip became the symbol of Palestine. This tiny sliver of land (1.3% of Palestine) remained the only place raising the flag of Palestine. It carried a major part of al Nakba burden when it became the temporary shelter for the inhabitant of 247 villages, expelled from their homes in southern Palestine. Villages in the south were ethnically cleansed by the Israeli military operation “Yoav”, also termed “The Ten Plagues”, in October 1948. Not a single Palestinian village remained. This act of total ethnic cleansing was propelled by several massacres which took place in Al Dawayima, Bayt Daras, Isdud, Burayr, among others.
Refugees, now corralled into Gaza Strip, were not immune from Israeli attacks even after their expulsion. The Majdal hospital was bombed in November 1948, as was the nearby al Joura village, which stood on the site of ancient Ashkelon and from which many future Hamas leaders would emerge. In January 1949, Israelis bombed food distribution centers in Dayr Al Balah and Khan Younis at peak hours, leaving over 200 bodies decimated by air raids. These raids led the usually restrained Red Cross to describe it as a “scene of horror”.
The occupation of Palestinian land and the expulsion of its population gave rise to a resistance movement, known then as the fedayeen. These resistance fighters crossed the Armistice line to attack the occupiers of their land.
In order to stop the incursions of the fedayeen and eliminate the idea of resistance, Israel continuously attacked the Gaza Strip refugee camps. In August 1953, Unit 101, led by Ariel Sharon, attacked Bureij refugee camp and killed 43 people in their beds. In August 1955, Israel, again led by Ariel Sharon, blew up the Khan Younis police station killing 74 policemen. In the same year, the Israelis killed 37 Egyptian soldiers in Gaza railway station and 28 others who were on their way to defend the others. The last attack changed the course of history in the region.
Egyptian president Gamal Abdel-Nasser, who assumed power in Egypt in July 1952, signed the first armament deal with the Soviet Block for arms denied to him by the British. He also authorised the fedayeen resistance by officially organising them under Colonel Mustafa Hafez.
On 29 October 1956 Israel invaded Sinai in collusion with Britain and France. The attacking Israeli soldiers entered Khan Younis on 3 November 1956, and collected all males between the ages of 15 and 50 from their homes and shot them in cold blood at their doorstep or against a wall in the town’s main square. The names of the 520 people killed have been listed. The following week, another massacre of refugees took place in Rafah. There were a deafening silence in the West about these massacres until the gifted cartoonist Joe Sacco immortalised them in his book Footnotes in Gaza.
These tragic events came to the world’s attention when Nasser became one of the recognised leaders of the Non-Aligned Movement starting with Bandung conference in 1955. Gaza Strip and Palestine came globally to light as the latest case of colonialism and ethnic cleansing.
As a result of this political development, Che Guevara, the Latin American revolutionary, came to visit Gaza Strip at Nasser’s invitation.
Guevara’s visit was momentous. It was the first time that a famous revolutionary comes to see the devastation created by Al Nakba first hand. He was met most enthusiastically by resistance leaders, such as Abdullah Abu Sitta, leader of the fedayeen (and leader of the southern front in the Arab Revolt of 1936, seen in [Fig-1], to the extreme right in Arab dress) and Qassem el Farra, third from right, Secretary of Khan Younis Municipality who kept records of fedayeen and their activities. Both were members of Palestine Legislative Council.
According to evidence I received from contemporaries about the visit, Guevara told Palestinian refugees they must continue the struggle to liberate their land. There was no way but resistance to occupation, he said. He admitted that their case was “complex” because the new Jewish settlers occupied their homes. “The right must eventually be restored”, he affirmed. He offered to supply arms and training but Castro wanted this aid to be coordinated through Nasser.
Mustafa Abu Middain, Al Bureij camp leader, took Guevara to visit the camp and showed him cases of poverty and hardship. “We have worse case of poverty”, Guevara shot back.
“You should show me what you have done to liberate your country. Where are the training camps? Where are the factories to manufacture arms? Where are people’s mobilisation centres?”

We are confident President Gay will address antisemitism, and other forms of hate, effectively and courageously,” the Harvard Alumni Association Executive Committee said in a letter obtained by the student newspaper.

Last week, New York Attorney General Letitia James announced a lawsuit against Digital Currency Group (DCG), its CEO Barry Silbert, and DCG’s bankrupt subsidiary Genesis Global Trading for defrauding investors of more than $1 billion. While the case lacks the lurid details of the FTX collapse late last year, DCG’s alleged fraud has also implicated one of D.C.’s centrist luminaries: economist and former Treasury secretary Larry Summers. And much like former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried’s allies in D.C., Summers has managed to avoid media scrutiny for his legitimization of DCG.
While Summers became the media’s face of advocating for harsh Fed rate hikes and devastating unemployment, he has spent his time since leaving the federal government cashing in from a litany of advisory positions and seats on corporate boards of directors, in addition to teaching at Harvard. In 2016, he began to advise DCG, holding a position that was alternately called senior adviser and advisory board member for over six years, until he resigned from the company in January of this year, after the SEC and DOJ announced a probe into DCG. Afterward, Summers scrubbed his personal website of any mention of his time there. But that does not absolve him of what was grossly irresponsible behavior at a minimum.

Near Qalandia checkpoint in the West Bank, I watch as two female Israeli soldiers fire tear gas at a crowd of protesting Palestinian youths. One canister ricochets, hitting a young boy in the arm. The soldier who was shooting begins to laugh. Her colleague proudly pats her shoulder as they both reach to refill their weapons.
At that moment, I feel the forbidding consequences of oppression familiar to every Palestinian. But I also feel betrayed as a woman. I had faced these soldiers woman to woman, naively thinking we were supposed to be united in the struggle against patriarchy. Yet here I am, watching them enforce it.
As feminist author Bell Hooks notes, patriarchy is a complete system of domination. The feminist struggle is against not only patriarchy’s alarming sexism, but also all forms of oppression.
It’s a message I’ve long been absorbing through the teachings of my own mother, who constantly guided me to practice an inclusive and intersectional feminism. She often warned me that I must recognize the powers of domination in all of its manifestations, including within Palestinian society, if I aspire to implement genuine feminism.
Through her teachings and my own experiences, it became clear to me that Zionism, as it has been perpetually expressed in Palestine, contradicts the core of feminism in its execution of its oppressive policies.
‘War is a man’s game,’ or so goes the saying. Whether this is true or not, patriarchal capitalism is certainly one of the driving forces behind war in the modern era. So can we end war with feminism?

Zara has pulled an ad campaign that featured images of mannequins wrapped in white sheeting that angry critics claimed bore a resemblance to the carnage in the Gaza Strip.
The Spanish-based international fashion brand announced that it was taking down its campaign, titled “The Jacket,” following calls for a boycott on social media from Palestinian supporters.
Social media users posted viral videos showing protesters outside Zara locations demanding that the brand take down the ads.
“The campaign, that was conceived in July and photographed in September, presents a series of images of unfinished sculptures in a sculptor’s studio and was created with the sole purpose of showcasing craftmade garments in an artistic context,” Zara said in a statement.
Protesters waving Palestinian flags have expressed anger at Zara. Others have vowed to boycott the popular retailer.
“Zara you are done for Muslims,” wrote one commenter on Instagram.

Species have been discovered between 400m and 4,800m below the surface of the waves inviting further study into how these rarely glimpsed gelatinous creatures live in such varying depths.
So, we got this low down on typical gray whales, and their diving and down time habits. He did comparisons with fin and blue whales. He discussed total lung volume and breathing rate and oxygen uptake.
Lots of field studies seeing how long the exhale and inhale rates are for these grays which we have around my Central Coast home.
Good stuff, this science — seeing what sorts of dives these whales take (now we have drones and video footage galore) and we know that swimming a few meters under the surface is more efficient by far for the whales.
His big question at the end of the talk was why the gray whale has a 10 minute dive limit when most all of the dives last two or three minutes.
Why do some animals have amazing capacities, but never utilize them regularly? WOlves can trot for days at a time, but they do not do this on a regular basis. Why do animals have capacities for which they rarely reach their limits?
Now, getting the blood and other vitals is impossible in the wild, but we, science, did get a gray whale, beach stranded, in Los Angeles:
Ahh, that was 1997:
In January 1997, a very young California gray whale was rescued near Marine del Rey, Los Angeles, and delivered to SeaWorld of California in San Diego. She was semi-comatose, severely infested with whale lice, and had numerous cuts and ulcers over her body. She weighed 758 kg, was 4.2 m long and judged to be only a few days old. Veterinarians and Animal Care Specialists at SeaWorld immediately began emergency procedures to restore her electrolyte, water, and energy balance and to combat bacterial infections. Although the initial prognosis for the infant’s survival was poor, a committed staff with around the clock protocol of intensive care, feeding, and observation greatly improved her condition during the critical next several days. As the calf’s condition steadily improved, she gained the name ‘JJ’ in memory of Judy Jones, a long-time and generous devotee of marine mammal rehabilitation in Laguna Beach.
As the calf’s condition improved, HSWRI co-hosted a scientific workshop as a prelude to the calf’s release back into the wild. The workshop, held in June 1997, was attended by invited local marine mammal scientists, animal care staff and veterinarians, and government representatives. There was substantial dialogue and debate on an array of issues, including whether JJ might be maintained in captivity for several years as a tremendous resource for learning more about mysticete cetaceans, if actually released when and where that should occur, and whether her movements and behavior should or should not be monitored after release. The outcome was general consensus that JJ should be reintroduced to the Pacific Ocean near San Diego in spring 1998 to coincide with the northward migration of gray whales from their breeding lagoons in Baja California, and that she should be monitored electronically. There was also consensus that as much scientific research as possible should be encouraged during the rehabilitation provided that it did not risk her health or result in substantial imprinting on humans.
While JJ was at Sea World, HSWRI researchers recorded her sounds and also exposed her to sounds of gray whales to prepare her for her release. After 14 months of rehabilitation, Sea World San Diego released JJ into the wild in March, 1998. HSWRI researchers placed two satellite transmitters on JJ with the intent of tracking her movements for up to 18 months, the life of the batteries. These two satellite tracking transmitters fell off at sea and were recovered within the first couple of days.
In spite of the loss of the satellite tags, scientists from HSWRI and Moss Landing Marine Lab aboard the vessel Megalodon visually tracked JJ’s progress after her release. The scientists reported JJ demonstrated natural and anticipated behaviors following her release, including diving, vocalization and spyhopping, that is, breaking the water’s surface to look around at her new surroundings. During that time, JJ swam strongly and covered more than 20 miles. She swam steadily at two to three knots, taking several breaths at the surface between one to six minute dives, a pattern typical for young gray whales. After about 48 hours, the researchers on board lost track of JJ, and she has never been spotted again.
Sumich stated that the idea was to track JJ after her release, and after all the human intrusion — blood samples, body measurements, slings lifting her — the animal spent less than 30 minutes wild, free, before scraping off all four transmitters. And, with seven coat guard vessels and hundreds of private boats in the water, not one of those thousands of eyes, human ones, saw JJ after she dove.
It might be a nice fairy tale, that she just kept on heading away, but there were not blow sprays, and what the fuck did happen?
She knew no life of bonding with mother and aunts and others. She knew of no life with the sea as her shepherd. In fucking Sea World.
I posited a question: “Look, science is science, I get it. But with all of these drones, all these intrusions into their wild habitats, what will this data show? THink about it — how sentinent are these creatures, and what is the effect of humans chasing them with 200 horsepower outboards, and then, bam, tagging them? Imagine, humans, and children watching parents running down the street as someone in a pick-up bed has a tag to toss at mom and dad to tag them? What sort of emotional trauma and wounding are we engaged in? For what? Is the next best thing a robotic appendage that can give scientists real time blood and hormone and other metabolic data?”
The answer was that science is about collecting data. One scientist in the audience challenged me:

But my question is why all the data on diving times. He did say things like the effects of food sources (dwindling) and climate change (yep — effects on food sources) on whales capacity to live and hunt.
Look, these people are sincere, that is, this group from the American Cetacean Society. They love these mammals, man, and the lay person is pretty smart, like a bird watcher. I’d rather be in a room with marine scientists and lay people whale lovers than a room full of politicians, lawyers, CEOs, county supervisors, movie stars, cops, soldiers, well, you get the picture.
However, the reality is we need PARADIGM shift, and we know there are five times the fishing fleet numbers in the oceans that the oceans can handle. OVER-fishing, OVER-harvesting. Taking large, fat, old females out of the mix means fewer eggs, man, I mean, for just one rock fish, say, 80 years old, producing millions of eggs, in one breeding, compared to hundreds of thousands for a small and young rock fish.
I have to say the questions about Homo Sapiens, that is, Homo COnsumopethicus and Homo Bellum, interacting with mammals — chasing them, tagging them, even in the name of science, well, we just do not know the deep wounding, the emotional wounding.
Whales and oceans are in trouble because of non-point pollution, over-fishing, noice, boat and ship traffic, human presence on shorelines, radar, EMF’s, and, hell, who knows if the gene code of whales is marked with an extinction gene.

TOKYO (AP) — The tsunami-damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant began its third release of treated and diluted radioactive wastewater into the sea Thursday after Japanese officials said the two earlier releases ended smoothly.
The plant operator discharged 7,800 tons of treated water in each of the first two batches and plans to release the same amount in the current batch through Nov. 20.
Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings said its workers activated the first of the two pumps to dilute the treated water with large amounts of seawater, gradually sending the mixture into the Pacific Ocean through an undersea tunnel for an offshore release.

Scientists have offered assurance that properly treated radioactive water will have only negligible effects when further diluted in the ocean. But experts also assured us that the Fukushima power plant was safe, until it wasn’t. The reason Japan is in this situation, with vast volumes of radiated waste to purge, is that life doesn’t happen in a controlled environment.
“We are urging polluters not to discharge the treated water in the Pacific Ocean until and unless the treated water is incontrovertibly proven to be safe to do so, and to seriously consider other options.”
Another member of the Melanesian Spearhead Group, the Solomon Islands, said at the UN it was “appalled” by the Japanese plan. France’s territory of New Caledonia is opposed as well, and it would be hard to imagine that semi-autonomous French Polynesia – one of the main sites of Cold War nuclear testing – would be satisfied with Tokyo’s plan either.

What follows is a 1,000 word piece that will appear in the local twice-a-week newspaper in my neck of the woods, Newport News Times, which is now under a paywall. It will appear around December 20 (I get a 1,000 words space every 30 days thus far). You know, discussing domestic violence during the holiday season when more abuse situations explode like a festering stye. Remember the stories of women trapped with their abusers during planned pandemic lockdowns? (A report released in 2021 by the National Commission on COVID-19 and Criminal Justice shows that domestic violence incidents in the U.S. increased by 8.1% following the imposition of lockdown orders during the 2020 pandemic.)
Violence against women increased to record levels around the world following lockdowns to control the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The United Nations called the situation a “shadow pandemic” in a 2021 report about domestic violence in 13 nations in Africa, Asia, South America, Eastern Europe, and the Balkans. In the United States, the American Journal of Emergency Medicine reported alarming trends in U.S. domestic violence, and the National Domestic Violence Hotline (The Hotline) received more than 74,000 calls, chats, and texts in February, the highest monthly contact volume of its 25-year history. I will continue writing about this friend, and alas, the journey has not ended with the fucker pleaing out on lesser charges, like all of 11 out of 12 dropped to do some fucking bullshit on-line domestic violence once a week classes (pure putrid, I am sure). He supposedly went through another on-line class, on booze abuse. He’s out, he’s fucking with his fucker lawyer to still intimidate her in the divorce case. That happened a while back, November, and while he keeps the house, keeps all the money, has assets hidden away, she gets a fucking joke of a $28,000 settlement, but he still has not paid the full amount. Think only half, and his lawyer is the stain that makes most 98.5 percent of lawyers the scum that they present themselves as.
Here, a quick retort to some letters this ex-huband, still-abuser’s male fucking anal cavity lawyer has sent out. Threatening to (his client) call the same cops that came out to the house where they had to break down the bedroom door a year ago to extract the fucker after the 911 call was made after she escaped his strangulation. She was in the house while this scum bucket was in jail nine months, and she had 60 days to leave, or earlier if she decided AFTER the settlement.
She was smart, since a week after the fucker was jailed November 2022, she had to get some cash to survive. No joint checking, savings, anything. The abuser’s rules.
SO she sold some tools and things, and used things in this county don’t get a pile of cash, she did it BEFORE filing for divorce. End of story.
But the abusive lawyer just keeps the one-two fucking team wrestling going. But she persists.
She’s out of the house that was in his name, and she is seeing a counselor, writing her memoir, working two jobs and tweaking her resume. So much more, too, than this scum bucket who doesn’t work, just purchased a small dick motorcycle and a pick-up.
He’s out, nine months in county lock-up, and the ankle and wrist monitors are off.
Here, my make believe letter to this scum bucket’s lawyer. A thought experiment, a letter to HER divorce lawyer in response to the dirty twins — DV ex and DV Loving Lawyer.

So, the lawyer for my ex-husband finally admits I am “amazing.” [“She amazingly sold these items before filing for divorce.”]
Indeed, I was attacked Nov. 11, and that was attempted murder. He barricaded himself inside our house. The deputies asked him to come out and discuss my 911 call.
He refused. They had to get a search warrant and then enter our house. He would not come out of the bedroom, so they forcefully pushed it in, which damaged the door and the door frame.
Yep, the grand jury went with 11 of the 12 charges leveled against him by the investigating sheriff’s deputies.
I’m not going to get into my own working through this hell hole of almost five years with him — the lawyer — or this ex-husband. But I will say, it’s called Battered Wife Syndrome, and I have a counselor and others who will testify to that. We are in many levels of trauma and Stockholm Syndrome (sort of, but more complicated).
It was already brought up in court — with proof — that I had attempted to file divorce papers, before this attempted murder, and he “talked me out of it.”
Nice work, lawyer, complete disregarding DV and Battered Wife Syndrome evidence based informaiton. Now, one letter he wrote alludes to not knowing if my ex-husband will file criminal complaints against me for theft? That’s a baseless threat, and for a lawyer to spew that in a letter is, well, it just shows his colors. Threats. The abuse continues now through his lawyer.
Then, in another letter the lawyer also threatened me (yeah, a veiled threat is how I take it) with a theft charge, an arrest and then calling up INS and then “checking” on my immigration status, which could be being revoked with a criminal charge.
I see this lawyer really knows nothing about Do0mestic Abuse and the Battered Wife Syndrome, and how that threat of green card being taken away is another open threat to my well-being. No knowledge of Oregon having organizations and some legislation to prevent that.
I am “amazing” because I went ahead and planned for a possible few months without decent work and so I sold saws and a few other tools WE both bought and WE both used to build the house? And, I sold a broken e-bike which he just tossed into the shed — a bike he broke while driving drunk? We bought two of them, and then his got stolen, so this bike, he took from me and crashed it over rocks in his drunken stupor.
Yes, those were tools WE used to build the house. I used those tools for various aspects of the construction. I sold them to a fellow who pointed out they were a bit worn down and there were rusty (locked) adjustment nuts. Not exactly prime equipment.
Yep, that was pretty amazingly smart of me to plan for tough times with the husband in jail facing a $750,000 bond, and his mother harassing me, and alas, the electricity shut off while he was in jail.
Pretty amazing that I weathered the abuse, and alas, it did take me into the first week of December to get a counselor to help me with the PTSD this ex-husband precipitated over four years of abuse, but specifically especially through this attempted strangulation.
Funny how BWS works on the esteem and psychology of the abused victim. Yo-yoing back and forth. He campaigned so many times for me to return. I was, up until I filed for divorce, not sure what I would do. And, so, that’s great this lawyer, this Mister DV-INS-Threatening Women, sees me that way.
And since November 12, 2022, what have I been doing while this piece of shit husband did squat in jail? I have worked hard to recover from the strangulation and this guy’s motivation to kill his wife. I have worked to deal with his criminal case, the no contact order for him and his mother. I have worked to make sure this guy received punishment for his crimes.
Ernie (psuedonym), along with his lawyer, just seems to want to continue the abuse. SO much for domestic violence classes. I have not been paid the full amount of the divorce settlement per the judge’s order. He will be in contempt of court at the end of the business day Dec. 16.
This is the result of a man who has not learned anything about domestic abuse. He is just the constant abuser, but this time with a lawyer, butluckily for me, I am out of the house and so far away from him emotionally, that getting through this extortion, this manipulation or whatever the lawyer believes he’s doing for “his” client, pales in comparison to the years of abuse and the murder attempt.
The judge will want to be informed of my ex-husband’s recalcitrance and continual financial abuse. And now, threats of contacting immigration and threats of filing theft charges?
What’s next up the sleeve of the lawyer practicing his dark arts, his rather unprofessional interpretation of the law? Are you going to go after my dog again?

How I Became A Socialist — London (1905)
It is quite fair to say that I became a Socialist in a fashion somewhat similar to the way in which the Teutonic pagans became Christians–it was hammered into me. Not only was I not looking for Socialism at the time of my conversion, but I was fighting it. I was very young and callow, did not know much of anything, and though I had never even heard of a school called “Individualism,” I sang the paean of the strong with all my heart.
This was because I was strong myself. By strong I mean that I had good health and hard muscles, both of which possessions are easily accounted for. I had lived my childhood on California ranches, my boyhood hustling newspapers on the streets of a healthy Western city, and my youth on the ozone-laden waters of San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. I loved life in the open, and I toiled in the open, at the hardest kinds of work. Learning no trade, but drifting along from job to job, I looked on the world and called it good, every bit of it. Let me repeat, this optimism was because I was healthy and strong, bothered with neither aches nor weaknesses, never turned down by the boss because I did not look fit, able always to get a job at shovelling coal, sailorizing, or manual labor of some sort.
And because of all this, exulting in my young life, able to hold my own at work or fight, I was a rampant individualist. It was very natural. I was a winner. Wherefore I called the game, as I saw it played, or thought I saw it played, a very proper game for MEN. To be a MAN was to write man in large capitals on my heart. To adventure like a man, and fight like a man, and do a man’s work (even for a boy’s pay)–these were things that reached right in and gripped hold of me as no other thing could. And I looked ahead into long vistas of a hazy and interminable future, into which, playing what I conceived to be MAN’S game, I should continue to travel with unfailing health, without accidents, and with muscles ever vigorous. As I say, this future was interminable. I could see myself only raging through life without end like one of Nietzsche’s blond-beasts, lustfully roving and conquering by sheer superiority and strength.
As for the unfortunates, the sick, and ailing, and old, and maimed, I must confess I hardly thought of them at all, save that I vaguely felt that they, barring accidents, could be as good as I if they wanted to real hard, and could work just as well. Accidents? Well, they represented FATE, also spelled out in capitals, and there was no getting around FATE. Napoleon had had an accident at Waterloo, but that did not dampen my desire to be another and later Napoleon. Further, the optimism bred of a stomach which could digest scrap iron and a body which flourished on hardships did not permit me to consider accidents as even remotely related to my glorious personality.
I hope I have made it clear that I was proud to be one of Nature’s strong-armed noblemen. The dignity of labor was to me the most impressive thing in the world. Without having read Carlyle, or Kipling, I formulated a gospel of work which put theirs in the shade. Work was everything. It was sanctification and salvation. The pride I took in a hard day’s work well done would be inconceivable to you. It is almost inconceivable to me as I look back upon it. I was as faithful a wage slave as ever capitalist exploited. To shirk or malinger on the man who paid me my wages was a sin, first, against myself, and second, against him. I considered it a crime second only to treason and just about as bad.
In short, my joyous individualism was dominated by the orthodox bourgeois ethics. I read the bourgeois papers, listened to the bourgeois preachers, and shouted at the sonorous platitudes of the bourgeois politicians. And I doubt not, if other events had not changed my career, that I should have evolved into a professional strike-breaker, (one of President Eliot’s American heroes), and had my head and my earning power irrevocably smashed by a club in the hands of some militant trades-unionist.
Just about this time, returning from a seven months’ voyage before the mast, and just turned eighteen, I took it into my head to go tramping. On rods and blind baggages I fought my way from the open West where men bucked big and the job hunted the man, to the congested labor centres of the East, where men were small potatoes and hunted the job for all they were worth. And on this new blond-beast adventure I found myself looking upon life from a new and totally different angle. I had dropped down from the proletariat into what sociologists love to call the “submerged tenth,” and I was startled to discover the way in which that submerged tenth was recruited.
I found there all sorts of men, many of whom had once been as good as myself and just as blond-beast; sailor-men, soldier-men, labor-men, all wrenched and distorted and twisted out of shape by toil and hardship and accident, and cast adrift by their masters like so many old horses. I battered on the drag and slammed back gates with them, or shivered with them in box cars and city parks, listening the while to life-histories which began under auspices as fair as mine, with digestions and bodies equal to and better than mine, and which ended there before my eyes in the shambles at the bottom of the Social Pit.
And as I listened my brain began to work. The woman of the streets and the man of the gutter drew very close to me. I saw the picture of the Social Pit as vividly as though it were a concrete thing, and at the bottom of the Pit I saw them, myself above them, not far, and hanging on to the slippery wall by main strength and sweat. And I confess a terror seized me. What when my strength failed? when I should be unable to work shoulder to shoulder with the strong men who were as yet babes unborn? And there and then I swore a great oath. It ran something like this: All my days I have worked hard with my body, and according to the number of days I have worked, by just that much am I nearer the bottom of the Pit. I shall climb out of the Pit, but not by the muscles of my body shall I climb out. I shall do no more hard work, and may God strike me dead if I do another day’s hard work with my body more than I absolutely have to do. And I have been busy ever since running away from hard work.
Incidentally, while tramping some ten thousand miles through the United States and Canada, I strayed into Niagara Falls, was nabbed by a fee-hunting constable, denied the right to plead guilty or not guilty, sentenced out of hand to thirty days’ imprisonment for having no fixed abode and no visible means of support, handcuffed and chained to a bunch of men similarly circumstanced, carted down country to Buffalo, registered at the Erie County Penitentiary, had my head clipped and my budding mustache shaved, was dressed in convict stripes, compulsorily vaccinated by a medical student who practised on such as we, made to march the lock-step, and put to work under the eyes of guards armed with Winchester rifles–all for adventuring in blond-beastly fashion. Concerning further details deponent sayeth not, though he may hint that some of his plethoric national patriotism simmered down and leaked out of the bottom of his soul somewhere–at least, since that experience he finds that he cares more for men and women and little children than for imaginary geographical lines.

To return to my conversion. I think it is apparent that my rampant individualism was pretty effectively hammered out of me, and something else as effectively hammered in. But, just as I had been an individualist without knowing it, I was now a Socialist without knowing it, withal, an unscientific one. I had been reborn, but not renamed, and I was running around to find out what manner of thing I was. I ran back to California and opened the books. I do not remember which ones I opened first. It is an unimportant detail anyway. I was already It, whatever It was, and by aid of the books I discovered that It was a Socialist. Since that day I have opened many books, but no economic argument, no lucid demonstration of the logic and inevitableness of Socialism affects me as profoundly and convincingly as I was affected on the day when I first saw the walls of the Social Pit rise around me and felt myself slipping down, down, into the shambles at the bottom.

At 7:00 a.m. on November 19, 1915, they shot Joe Hill, strapped to a chair, a target placed on his heart. Five sheriff’s deputies armed with rifles, four with live ammunition, one with blanks, stood ready.
“Aim” said the sheriff.
“Yes, aim,” said Hill.
Then it was over. Joe Hill — the Wobbly composer of revolutionary songs, the writer of revolutionary poems, an organizer on the docks of San Pedro, just thirty-six years old — was gone.
Joe Hill to some, Joe Hillstrom to others, was murdered that morning in Salt Lake City, a victim of Utah’s authorities — or was it the copper bosses?
The movement to spare Joe Hill had been massive. Millions of workers spoke out demanding that he not be killed. Few, save the bosses themselves, could believe that Hill had shot the grocer John G. Morrison and his son Arling. Even the American Federation of Labor appealed on Hill’s behalf at its 1915 convention in San Francisco. Its president, Samuel Gompers, intensely hostile to the radical Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), wired President Woodrow Wilson urging him to intervene; Wilson in turn appealed to William Spry, the governor of Utah. To no effect — the copper bosses would have their way.
Joe Hill’s remains were viewed by thousands in Salt Lake, then shipped back to Chicago. There, the Thanksgiving Day outpouring of grief and solidarity was like nothing seen before. In a packed West Side hall, there were speakers and singing. Bill Haywood, with his huge frame and one blazing eye, stood alone beside the casket and spoke for the IWW: “Goodbye Joe, you will live long in the hearts of the working class. Your songs will be sung wherever workers toil, urging them to organize.”
Ralph Chaplin, another Wobbly poet, composer of the labor anthem “Solidarity Forever,” reviewed the unimaginable day:
Slowly and impressively the vast throng moved through the west side streets. Windows flew open at its approach and were filled with peering faces. Porches and even roofs were blackened with people, and some of the more daring were lined up over signboards and on telephone and arc-light poles. The flower-bearers, with their bright colored floral pieces and wreaths tied with crimson ribbons, formed a walking garden almost a block in length. Thousands in the procession wore IWW pennants on their sleeves or red ribbons worded, “Joe Hill, murdered by the authorities of the state of Utah, November the 19th, 1915,” or, “Joe Hill, IWW martyr to a great cause,” “Don’t mourn — organize. Joe Hill,” and many others.

Russell Albee banned all “street speaking except religious speeches” in an effort to squash a strike at the Oregon Packing Co. on Southeast 8th Avenue at Belmont Street. The police told the strikers, most of whom were women, to “quit picketing, quit speaking, quit parading, or else face a jail sentence.” When the picketers still refused to disperse, a legion of mounted cops swooped in.
Flynn wasn’t involved in the strike at the Portland fruit cannery — she was back east leading silk-mill workers in New Jersey — but her friend Dr. Marie Equi waded into the fight and kept her apprised.
After helping to establish the American Civil Liberties Union, Flynn took up residence in Portland in the 1920s. By then she was suffering from persistent health problems. Long divorced from a Minnesota ore miner, she lived at Equi’s Southwest Portland home for years, too weak to rejoin the barricades. “I always felt I was in jail here,” she later said.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Former Vice President Al Gore railed against COP28 President Sultan al-Jaber on Tuesday after a leaked video showed the UAE climate envoy telling former Republic of Ireland President Mary Robinson there’s “no science” behind the push to phase out fossil fuels.

We know that Israelis and Palestinians are here to stay — neither Jewish safety nor Palestinian liberation can be achieved if they are pitted against one another.”
The letter is distinct from the left-wing Jewish pro-cease-fire protests, which have disrupted Biden events and taken over landmarks like Grand Central Terminal in New York City, in that the signers of this letter write from a more mainstream perspective and come from a wider range of American Jewish groups, including synagogues, local Jewish community centers, social services agencies, philanthropic organizations and Jewish cultural institutions.
The list includes some organizations that support a cease-fire but also plenty of others whose leaders have been outspoken in support of Israel and have even criticized those calling for a cease-fire as being sympathetic to Hamas.
“Within these organizations, there’s a lot of different perspectives and beliefs,” said Kelly Viselman, who works for a progressive Jewish social justice group that supports a cease-fire and said she wanted to speak about it publicly because other signatories could not without risking their jobs.
