JS: When you say that it was entirely predictable, what do you mean?
NF: Well the Israelis said they were going to kill the people when they attempted to breach the prison gate. The people inside the prison said they’re going to try to break out of the prison. It doesn’t take rocket science to figure out what’s going to happen in that scenario.
JS: When you say prison, what are you referring to?
NF: I don’t want to get too pedantic about this, but Confucius once said, “The beginning of all wisdom is to call things by their proper names.” That might sound like a fortune cookie entry, but in fact it’s a pretty profound idea. It took me a long time to sort of come to grips with it, or for it to be processed by my mind.
So, in the case at hand, if you look at the mainstream publications which echo Israeli propaganda, or if you just look at the Times, they keep referring to a border fence. A border fence is if two sovereign states stand on each side of that fence.
But then let’s look at the facts: Early back in 2003, the Hebrew university sociologist Baruch Kimmerling, he was a distinguished sociologist, now when I say back in 2003, bear in mind that the blockade, the intensity of the blockade, was notched up in 2006 after the elections that brought Hamas to power. So, when Kimmerling was speaking, it was before the intensity of the blockade had set in, and he described Gaza as, and now I’m quoting him, “the world’s largest concentration camp ever.”
The respected Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz, they refer to the “Gaza Ghetto,” with the obvious resonances for Jews, the Warsaw Ghetto.
And then if you take the conservative British Prime Minister David Cameron, he referred to Gaza as an open-air prison.
So, is it accurate, is it calling things by their proper names to say that the Palestinians in Gaza are trying to breach a border fence? No. Palestinians in Gaza are trying to breach a concentration camp fence. They’re trying to breach a ghetto fence. They’re trying to breach a prison gate.
But that’s only half the story. Because it’s not even a prison. It’s not even, in my opinion, it’s not even a concentration camp. I don’t want to get overly technical about this, but the Nazis had two different kinds of camps — the concentration camps which go back to the Boer War in South Africa, and then there are the extermination camps, which is something apart. Not always apart, in camps like Majdanek and Auschwitz. They combined the two. But then there were just some separate just extermination centers, like Sobibór.
Now, let’s return to Gaza. What are the facts about Gaza?
Number one, beginning in 2012, the United Nations, very staid, dull-witted but competent bureaucrats, began issuing reports. The first one was in the form of the interrogative. It said, “Will Gaza be livable in 2020?”
Then, in 2015, another report was issued by UNCTAD, one of the premier U.N. agencies, and they switched from the interrogative to the declarative. They said, “Gaza, on its current trajectory, will not be livable in 2020.”
Then, in 2017, a senior U.N. official — again, very conservative, proper bureaucrat — said, It seems like our forecasts have been optimistic. Sanguine. He said, “Gaza has crossed the threshold of unlivability a long time ago.”
We’re not talking about poetry. We’re not talking about hyperbole. We’re talking about the assessment, the verdict of very conservative, but professional and competent, U.N. bureaucrats. Gaza is an unlivable space.
What does that mean concretely? Well, let’s take one indicator: 97 percent of Gaza’s water is contaminated. It’s unfit for human consumption.
Well what does that mean? Well, let’s take the opinion of Sara Roy, who is the world’s leading authority on Gaza’s economy. Very bright woman, very decent woman. I know it’s not relevant, but I’ll mention it: Both of her parents were in Auschwitz concentration camp. So, consider her language. She said: “Innocent people, most of them children,” — because Gaza is overwhelmingly, majority children, 51 percent children — “are daily being poisoned.”
And that’s a fact. And people don’t want to hear it, they get all squeamish. Why are you talking about concentration camps? Why are you talking about poisoning? Well, hey! Don’t blame the messenger for the bad news. Concentration camp? That’s Baruch Kimmerling. Poisoned, one million children — there are one million children in Gaza that are being poisoned. Israel poisoning one million children.
So now, let’s get back to the question, calling things by their proper names. Are the people of Gaza trying to breach a border fence? No. The people of Gaza are trying to breach an unlivable space in which the population is daily being poisoned. Those are the facts. And we shouldn’t recoil from those facts. If you could talk about the Syrian government using poison gas, and everybody can get indignant, there may be a question, a reasonable question, about which side used the poison gas, and I’m not about to resolve that question. The point is: Everybody gets indignant. You’re poisoning people!
In our own country, when it was it was discovered that the water in Flint was contaminated, there was a national outcry. National outrage. National indignation.
And now you have a whole population, predominately children, being systematically poisoned. And they have no way out. Which is another feature about Gaza, which sets it apart from the other horrific situations in the world today.
United Nations Relief and Works Agency, UNRWA, it said a couple of years ago, there is something about Gaza that’s distinct, they said. I don’t want to say unique, because we don’t want to get into the Holocaust sweepstakes. Let’s just call it distinct.
They said: Everywhere else in the world, when there’s a natural disaster, say a drought, or a human-made disaster, such as the war in Syria, the people have the option, UNRWA said, at least to move. And that’s not a great option. It means becoming a refugee, and in many cases, it means getting a tent if you’re lucky, and the tent is pitched in mud. But, it’s an option.
The people of Gaza are the only people in the world who don’t have that option. They’re caged in. In those circumstances, to refer to it as a border fence, strikes me as almost obscene. And there’s another obscenity. The obscenity of referring to Israel as using disproportionate force, and/or excessive force, which is what the human rights organizations, as well as, say the U.N. High Commissioner of Human Rights, what they typically say.
Well, the implication of that is, Israel has the right to use proportionate force. Israel has the right to use moderate as against excessive force. People are trapped, and trapped in something that seems to go beyond even a concentration camp. And Israel has the right to use any force? To keep them confined? Israel has the right to use proportionate force? Moderate force? To confine the 1 million children of Gaza in effectively a death camp, where they’re being poisoned everyday?
No, there’s something really wrong about that’s going here. Now, as I said, I’m not going to compare magnitude of crimes. I don’t want to go down that route.
Incidentally, the expression, “Holocaust sweepstakes” doesn’t come from me. It comes from the late University of Chicago Historian, Peter Novick, who said that when Jews and Israelis insist on the fact that the Holocaust is unique, and then the others start weighing in, the Armenians, the Native Americans, they say, “No, ours is just as bad,” it becomes a Holocaust Sweepstakes. And that phrase resonated with me. Read the book 20 years ago, but it stood with me. I don’t want to go down that route. But there something here that’s profoundly wrong.
I was profoundly wrong in my opinion, beyond the martyrdom of the people of Gaza. It’s the squeamishness and the cowardice about calling things, as Confucius said, by their proper name. That’s the least that’s owed the people of Gaza. (NF)

The letter, which, in addition to condemning rape, supported the UN investigation into allegations of sexual violence by both sides and called for a ceasefire, said it ultimately would be delivered to Israeli and American officials.
Jordan-Young, who was among the signatories, called the “framing and timing” of the event “opportunistic” given the US government’s backing of Israel in the war. “Every rape is an outrage, as is the carpet-bombing of civilians,” she told me. “As a feminist scholar, I’m all too aware that both rape and charges of rape have been and continue to be used in the service of racism.” Simply looking at sexual or gender violence in isolation, she added, “can’t generate a sound analysis or sound politics.”

Nicolás Martinelli, Uruguay’s interior minister, told Reuters that Lacalle Pou’s government had repeatedly asked the DEA to return but has yet to get a positive response. He said he was pleased Argentina-based DEA agents are now visiting Montevideo twice a week, up from once every two weeks.
A DEA office is no panacea. Several Latin American nations have a deadly drug problem despite a strong DEA presence. Still, Martinelli said his country is desperate for U.S. equipment and expertise; he lamented that Uruguay’s status as a high-income nation excludes it from U.S. counter-narcotics donations.
“Uruguay remains a valued DEA partner,” a DEA spokesperson said. “We continue to actively explore new opportunities to expand our efforts to dismantle transnational criminal organizations operating worldwide.”
Nelson Vargas, who ran the DEA’s Montevideo office from 2013-2017, said “it was kind of cloak and dagger” when he arrived, with local cops wary of working with the DEA.
Politics played a part. Leftist governments ruled Uruguay from 2005-2020, and their negative view of U.S. policy towards Latin America – including support for the country’s 1973-85 dictatorship – hindered counter-narcotics collaboration, Layera, Martinelli and U.S. sources said.
Uruguay’s proud reputation as a regional role model bred complacency, two current and four former U.S. officials said. Authorities were in denial about the scale of cocaine moving through their country, they said.
Uruguay seized over 2 metric tonnes of cocaine in 2021, according to United Nations data, up over 1,300% compared with the 144 kgs apprehended in 2017.
In 2019, when Germany seized a record 1 billion euro haul of cocaine in a soybean shipment from Montevideo, the Uruguayans didn’t believe the drugs originated in their country, initially claiming they were loaded in Brazil, two ex-DEA agents said.

Gary Webb on the CIA’s Role in the 1980s LA Crack Epidemic
An explosive report from a relatively unknown journalist, Gary Webb, claimed the CIA helped foster the crack epidemic that ravaged Los Angeles in the 1980s.
In 1996, a bombshell report by journalist Gary Webb claimed that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) supported cocaine trafficking into the U.S. by Nicaraguan Contra Rebel organizations. The U.S. support was an effort to destabilize the left-wing Nicaraguan government which the U.S. viewed as a threat. The report claimed that trafficking lead to the crack epidemic in Los Angeles in the 1980s.
Gary Webb wrote the three-part exposé called “Dark Alliance”, for the San Jose Mercury News in California, in August 1996. Webb had anonymous sources (he eventually named one in a later book) who had been involved in the Nicaraguan drug ring to back his allegations up.
Some of Webb’s sources would later speak out in a 2015 documentary called “Freeway: Crack in the System” which was about Rick “Freeway” Ross who created a crack empire in the 1980s. Ross was a central character in Webb’s Dark Alliance allegations.
According to Webb in the 1980s, when the CIA exerted a certain level of control over Contra groups such as the Nicaraguan Democratic Force (FDN), the agency as well as the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) granted amnesty to and financially backed important Contra supporters and fundraisers who were known to the U.S. Government as cocaine smugglers.
The Contras were U.S.-supported right-wing rebel groups, active from 1979 to the early 1990s, in opposition to the socialist Sandinista Junta of National Reconstruction government in Nicaragua.
The U.S. Justice Department and its agencies — who were aware of the Contra-linked drug trafficking operations of the FDN supporters — allegedly thwarted local police investigations and blocked the prosecution of the Contra-linked cocaine traffickers.
“For the better part of a decade, a San Francisco Bay Area drug ring sold tons of cocaine to the Crips and Bloods street gangs of Los Angeles and funneled millions in drug profits to a Latin American guerrilla army run by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, a Mercury News investigation has found.
“This drug network opened the first pipeline between Colombia’s cocaine cartels and the black neighborhoods of Los Angeles, a city now known as the ‘crack’ capital of the world. The cocaine that flooded in helped spark a crack explosion in urban America and provided the cash and connections needed for L.A.’s gangs to buy automatic weapons.
“Thousands of young black men are serving long prison sentences for selling cocaine — a drug that was virtually unobtainable in black neighborhoods before members of the CIA’s army started bringing it into South-Central in the 1980s at bargain-basement prices.”
The explosive allegations enraged the communities most affected by the crack epidemic here in the U.S.
In October 1996, two months after the publication of Webb’s articles, a Boston Globe reporter wrote that the story was “pulsing through [L.A.’s] black neighborhoods like a shockwave, provoking a stunning, growing level of anger and indignation. Talk-radio stations with predominantly black audiences are deluged with calls on the subject. Demonstrations, candle-lighting ceremonies and town-hall meetings are becoming regular affairs. And people on the street are heatedly discussing the topic.”
Webb would publish a book based on his articles two years later, entitled “Dark Alliance: The CIA, the Contras, and the Crack Cocaine Explosion”.
The book won a Pen Oakland Censorship Award and a Firecracker Alternative Book Award.
Given the high-profile subject and its incendiary matter, many observers dismissed Webb’s report as conspiracy theory too.
Eventually, the media would mostly turn against Webb, attempting to discredit him. Notably, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times ran articles calling his allegations unfounded. The Mercury News, who originally stood by Webb’s reporting, complied with these new denunciations and published an apology for the series in May 1997.
This came at the price of Webb’s career and ultimately his life: on December 10, 2004, the journalist was found dead in his apartment, with two .38-caliber bullets to the head — from an apparent suicide.
Two years later, Gary Webb’s own story would become the subject of a biography written by award-winning investigative journalist Nick Schou, who also worked as a consultant on the 2014 film of the same name, Kill the Messenger. The film was a depiction of Webb’s life, starring Jeremy Renner.
Perhaps the extreme backlash Webb faced was inevitable since he was taking on such a large, furtive and powerful entity as the CIA.
It was acknowledged that Webb did not state outright that the CIA ran the drug trade or even knew about it. However, the implications were deemed clear — and this was dangerous for the public image of the agency.
Webb would later say that he did contact the CIA during his research but that the agency would not return his calls. Along with no mention of this in his “Dark Alliance” series, many thought he refused to contact the CIA which undermined his credibility in the eyes of other reporters.
Allegedly, the CIA did not have to do much to unravel the journalist’s reputation afterward; the controversy surrounding Webb’s work proved enough for his fellow journalists and media outlets to attack him.
In a 2013 interview, reporter Jesse Katz recounted with remorse: “As an L.A. Times reporter, we saw this series in the San Jose Mercury News and kind of wonder[ed] how legit it was and kind of put it under a microscope. And we did it in a way that most of us who were involved in it, I think, would look back on that and say it was overkill. We had this huge team of people at the L.A. Times and kind of piled on to one lone muckraker up in Northern California.”
Was Gary Webb wrong?
According to The Intercept, Nicholas Dujmovic, a CIA Directorate of Intelligence staffer who wrote an internal report on Webb’s series, pointed out that much of what was reported in “Dark Alliance” was, in fact, not new.
As early as 1985, Associated Press journalists Robert Parry and Brian Barger found that Contra groups had “engaged in cocaine trafficking, in part to help finance their war against Nicaragua.”
A special Senate subcommittee, chaired by then-senator John Kerry, investigated the AP’s findings and, in 1989, released a 1,166-page report on covert U.S. operations throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.
It found “considerable evidence” that the Contras were linked to running drugs and guns — and that the U.S. government knew about it.
“On the basis of this evidence, it is clear that individuals who provided support for the Contras were involved in drug trafficking, the supply network of the Contras was used by drug trafficking organizations, and elements of the Contras themselves knowingly received financial and material assistance from drug traffickers. In each case, one or another agency of the U.S. government had information regarding the involvement either while it was occurring, or immediately thereafter.”
Curiously, this remained largely unnoticed by the media until Gary Webb picked up the story years later in 1996, and linked it to the CIA.
In a related affair, in 1993 Robert Bonner, the head of the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), said on the CBS show “60 Minutes” the Venezuelan national guard smuggled cocaine into the United States in cooperation with the CIA. However, when Webb’s report came out three years later, this accusation seems to have been forgotten.
But there are those who still believe Webb’s reporting got it wrong. As recently as 2014, Jeff Leen, an assistant managing editor for major investigations for the Washington Post, wrote an article titled “Gary Webb was no journalism hero, despite what ‘Kill The Messenger’ says.”
Leen alleged that Webb’s report was overblown and his claims were insufficiently substantiated. Leen referenced a 1998 report by CIA Inspector General Frederick Hitz as evidence the CIA was not involved in drug trafficking. However, Hitz’s report echoed the Senate subcommittee’s findings that while the CIA did not conspire to bring drugs into the U.S., it did not cut off ties to individuals alleged to be involved in trafficking drugs.
“As I said earlier, we have found no evidence in the course of this lengthy investigation of any conspiracy by CIA or its employees to bring drugs into the United States. However, during the Contra era, CIA worked with a variety of people to support the Contra program. These included CIA assets, pilots who ferried supplies to the Contras, as well as Contra officials and others.
“Let me be frank about what we are finding. There are instances where CIA did not, in an expeditious or consistent fashion, cut off relationships with individuals supporting the Contra program who were alleged to have engaged in drug trafficking activity or take action to resolve the allegations.”
Some say Webb’s downfall was linking the cocaine to the socioeconomic effects of drugs on the black community in Los Angeles. Some interpreted the connection as part of a CIA conspiracy to purposefully target the black community, an allegation Webb denies he ever made.
“I never believed, and never wrote, that there was a grand CIA conspiracy behind the crack plague,” Gary Webb wrote in his book. “. . . The CIA couldn’t even mine a harbor without getting its trench coat stuck in its fly.”
Webb’s biographer would eventually state that perhaps this was the main legacy the late journalist ultimately paid the price for: “he documented for the first time in the history of U.S. media how CIA complicity with Central American drug traffickers had actually impacted the sale of drugs north of the border in a very detailed, accurate story. And that’s, I think, the takeaway here.”

Bragg is well aware of his place in a continuing tradition of protest music, and in “I Dreamed Phil Ochs Last Night,” he re-imagines an old labor movement song as homage to the folk singer Phil Ochs. The song was originally about labor organizer Joe Hill, who was most likely framed for murder and executed in 1915. Interestingly, Hill was also a songwriter, the author of “There Is Power in the Union,” referenced above. But Bragg makes the singer Phil Ochs the protagonist of his song, working artistic disappointment and government surveillance into his verses. You can imagine Bragg identifying with Ochs, a songwriter too radical for mainstream success.
A spare, a capella rendering “Nicaragua Nicaraguita,” originally by the Nicaraguan writer Carlos Mejía Godoy, reminds us of Bragg’s work for the central American country’s political autonomy. About a year before The Internationale came out, Bragg had served as a UN observer monitoring Nicaraguan elections. Other cuts make a less specific case for peace and equality. “My Youngest Son Came Home Today,” perhaps the most compelling track on the album, is wrenching and universal. Its narrator is the parent of a boy killed in the Irish troubles, but it could be any loss, any country, any war.
The Internationale was reissued in 2006 on Yep Roc, as part of a larger Billy Bragg retrospective, and this expanded version included 12 additional live and unreleased tracks (a wonderfully raucous “Help Save the Youth of America,” for instance, recorded in Russia).

Chaplin himself made no secret in his autobiography that his father was half-Romani, as was his mother. But a birth certificate for Chaplin has never been found. In 2012, decades after his death in 1977, his daughter Victoria Chaplin found a letter that may explain why. Hill claimed Chaplin had entered the world “in a caravan [that] belonged to the Gypsy Queen, who was my auntie.” Chaplin was believed to have kept it secret, possibly because he did not want the stigma of a Romani connection.
“He was very conscious of his Romani heritage. He told my father and his other children that they had Romani heritage. It was something that he was proud of but was very much overlooked,” his granddaughter Carmen Chaplin told Variety magazine in 2021.

The Nitzana border crossing between Egypt and Israel has been closed after dozens of Israel protesters blocked humanitarian aid trucks from entering the Gaza Strip. The crossing has been used for inspection of humanitarian aid trucks before they return to the Rafah crossing into Gaza.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the US State Department is investigating the use of white phosphorus by the Israeli occupation forces in its raids on the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, in an investigation to determine whether the weapons provided by the US to Israel were improperly used to kill civilians.
US authorities are also investigating the air attack on the Jabalia refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip on October 31, which led to the killing of more than 125 Palestinians.
Investigators suspect that Israel may have used a one-ton bomb in that raid.

Sputnik has obtained a trove of documents indicating that rheumatological drugs had been allegedly tested for several years on psychiatric patients of a hospital in the city of Mariupol at the request of major Western pharmaceutical corporations and with the assistance of Ukrainian officials.
The documents contain information pertaining to such companies as Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Celltrion, Novatris International AG, Merck KGaA, and a branch of Samsung that produces medical equipment. The tests were carried out while the Kiev regime held Mariupol until May 2022, when Russia took over the city.
Patients of the Mariupol hospital’s psychiatric ward were most likely used as vulnerable “guinea pigs” in experiments that would not have been permitted in the countries where these pharmaceutical firms are located, William Jones, a former White House correspondent for Executive Intelligence Review and a non-resident fellow of the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies, Renmin University of China, told Sputnik.

“He was very complementary of the crew for our actions,” he said.

Maller said he can’t speak about details of the flight because of the ongoing investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board. But he did say he’s also proud of how the flight attendants on board responded.
“What 1282 reminds us, again, is the critical importance of flight attendants,” he said. “We don’t have these types of emergencies on a regular basis. But when they happen there’s no substitute for well-trained and qualified flight attendants [who are]willing to put their safety behind the safety of the people that they’re charged to take care of. And that’s what we all did.”
He said many flight attendants, particularly veteran flight attendants like himself, have seen very little increase in pay in the last several years as negotiations between the airline and union stretched on. He said most flight attendants he knows have a second job. He’s worked as a bar tender himself at times.
“You have to have something to have livable pay, to make ends meet,” he said.
“So it’s nice to have the support [of management] in the moment. But now it’s time to show support for all of us at Alaska Airlines,” said Maller, who is a union official at his airline’s Portland base. “The fact is that every flight attendant at Alaksa would have done the same thing on that flight. And management needs to recognize that value that we bring to the operation.”
Many haven’t received a raise in years: There are 75,000 flight attendants spread between four of the nation’s five largest airlines — American, United, Southwest and Alaska — who have gone a year or more since their previous labor contracts reached their negotiated end date.

Two journalists, including an Al Jazeera reporter, have been wounded in an Israeli attack north of Rafah in southern Gaza.
Wearing protective gear identifying them as members of the press, they were documenting the condition that displaced Palestinians face, when they were directly targeted by an Israeli drone strike. Ismail Abu Omar and his cameraman Ahmad Matar were seriously wounded and taken to the European Gaza Hospital in Khan Younis. A physician said,
“Upon examination, his right leg had already been severed. In addition, he had shrapnel lodged in his chest and head, as well as his left leg…He was bleeding heavily and lost a lot of blood, to the degree that his blood pressure and pulse were not readable,” the doctor continued.
Al Jazeera reports: In a press conference shortly after the incident, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said.
“Let me offer, of course, condolences to your colleagues who have been injured. And I know that they are not the first Al Jazeera journalists to have been harmed during this conflict.”
He added, “We continue to engage with the government of Israel to make clear that journalists ought to be protected.”
Minutes before Miller made his comment, Biden had urged the House of Representatives to pass a foreign aid bill that includes $14bn in military aid for Israel.
The bill also bans US funding for UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, which rights advocates have described as indispensable for addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The New Arab reports: The Israeli army brought groups of Israeli civilians into prisons to watch Palestinian prisoners getting tortured, the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor revealed on Monday.
Palestinian detainees released from two Israeli detention centers told the human rights group that they were stripped naked, beaten with metal batons and electric sticks, and verbally brutalized under the watch of civilian visitors.
The visitors came to watch the torture sessions in groups of “ten to twenty”, seemingly organized by the Israeli army. In many cases, they were allowed to film the torture sessions on their phones.

Money. Loaning money to “freinds.” Loans. Evictions, foreclosures, tariffs, taxes, fines, fees, penalties, tickets, tolls, and money for fucking nothing. I’ll get into the personal stuff, the loaning money to someone in the midst of trauma and trauma healing and trauma survival and victimhood. First, that fucking money, that huge destruction of cities, societies, countries. During the month of October, the color blue signified yet another “awareness” month — domestic violence. It is an issue that should be, unfortunately, recognized and dealt with 24/7, 365 days a year. Every single day! December historically has been the month when DV cases/incidents rise.
In Lincoln County, spousal abuse ranks high on many of the crimes ending up on the police blotter. This newspaper covers plethora of arrests tied to assaults that are indeed in the realm of domestic abuse. Alcohol and drugs are the driving force behind many cases. We can get deep and say an abuser probably comes from an abusive childhood, but it’s difficult to conjure up sympathy for a man who punches, strangles or stabs his spouse.
Front page newspaper stories about accused abusers are both dramatic and informative for the community, but the reality for the abused seeing a headline and reading a detailed story of her perpetrator’s arrest is both unsettling and validation.
This county has a major lack of so-called “services” for those impacted by domestic abuse. There are no multiple so-called safe houses for sheltering the victim (My Sisters’ Place), or easily accessed dynamic programs to assist victims (and a victim includes both the spouse and children and pets when families are involved).
The Lincoln County District Attorney’s office has decent prosecutors, for sure, and there is a Victim’s Assistance staff doing amazing things; there are even so-called domestic violence-focused judges in this neck of the woods. I have personal experience with a sheriff deputy investigating a case of wife abuse, which encourages me about the character of some cops.
Imagine, a deputy telling a victim that “… it’s not your fault, this guy targeted you, and you are powerful, smart and worthy of a loving, respectful relationship.” This deputy in fact lives in my community, Waldport, with three children and wife. I see how invested he is in creating a safe community for all of us.
Unfortunately, for women, the cycle of abuse includes the yo-yo motion of both psychological factors and the action of returning to their abusers. The relationship that involves physical and verbal abuse is one of co-dependency and actual physiological changes in the woman’s brain.
We can call the Stockholm Syndrome-like actions of a victim a “dual relationship between the power of the abuser and the weakness of the abused.” Obviously, high profile and highly successful women — CEOs, business owners, et al — can be that “victim,” as well as any sort of woman on various social determinant spectrums that predicate economic, psychological and educational outcomes.
People in marriages and relationships whose partners are abusers can develop Stockholm Syndrome towards any person who has an eerie degree of power over them. We see this with anyone in interpersonal relationships— husbands, wives, partners, parents, grandparents, children.
I’ve seen this up close and personal here in Lincoln County with several people who have reached out to me and my resources to flee abuse. The syndrome is built on a foundation of fear, threats and isolation, and is generally believed to require victims’ belief that they can’t escape the situation they’re in.
The foundational ingredient (or poison or dark magic) is these “small acts of kindness” on the part of the abuser, whether real or perceived. Behind all that darkness, the abuser’s own actions are looked at “as a source of the flame of something to live for.”
This entails a complex set of cultural, interpersonal and psychological elements. The abuser can be seen as a monster — and there are outright monsters I have seen as a reporter, case manager and brother of a sister who managed safe houses and DV programs in Arizona — or a charmer.
Some of the common personality factors in an abuser include narcissism, low self-esteem and a long list of elements to include:
• A history of abuse in one’s family or past;
• Being physically or sexually abused as a child;
• A history of being physically abusive;
• A lack of appropriate coping skills;
• Untreated mental illness;
• Drug or alcohol abuse;
• Socioeconomic pressures or economic stress (studies show a higher incidence of abuse in lower-income communities);
• Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD);
• Emotional dependence and insecurity;
• Belief in strict gender roles (e.g., male dominance and aggression in relationships);
• Desire for power and control in past relationships.
While there may be a history of attitudes accepting or justifying violence and aggression in American society, as well as studies citing the U.S. as a rape culture, the fact is women especially have so many challenges accepting they are abused, believing that they are not responsible for the abuse and not falling into despair and creating their own isolation as the abuser’s perceived and real power over a woman’s life dominates.
The cycle of mental, economic and physical abuse inside a relationship that is abusive includes the psychodynamics of perpetrator and victim. The idea of understanding one’s victimhood in whichever culture a woman lives (some men of course are victims, too) is to dig deep into that culture’s treatment of families, women, mental health as well as how it embraces the sociological determinants of mental health outcomes including lack of economic stability, substance abuse, and one’s own self-worth.
Two quotations, one from a male and a female survivor, give hope during this holiday season, when abuse seems to heighten: “You survived the abuse. You’re gonna survive the recovery;” and “You are not the darkness you endured. You are the light that refused to surrender.”

I am fucking spiritually flumoxed. I am dealing with multi-level levels of trauma, some call it vicarious trauma, or some such bullshit. I believe in the various angles of trauma, but there is an amazing amount of money changers, psychology changers, social work changers, therapy changers, victims rights changers, district attorney changers, the entire criminal injustice changers, all of this dirty Capitalism which crushes people, spirits, hearts and minds and communities.
I am also a traumatized secondarily or tertiarily punching bag for these untreated, un-claimed, un-resoved traumas my friend has gone through, from youth to now, and she is now on the run, screwing my friend out of money, and now, just a product of fight or flight and a fucking counselor who has really done squat for her.
Then, therapy, what’s the point, uh? Talk talk talk, listen listen listen therapy? Imagine that, my friend just dumps onto the therapist, and the therapist does what malpractice. Here, a composite but real conversation!
Victim: “I don’t know why my friend has turned on me.”
Therapist: “Explain what happened.”
Victim: “He has said I deserved my ex, that I deserved being with Jim, deserved to be abused by him.”
Therapist: “Well, what do you think about that? How does that make you feel?”
Victim: “I feel betrayed. I feel that he never cared about my plight? I feel all men are like this.”
Therapist: “Well, do you feel you are empowering yourself to see through people, especially men, who are abusers, including this man who you thought was your friend?”
Victim: “He went on about trauma informed care, and then he said I deserved Jim. That I deserved being abused by him.”
Therapist: “So, does it feel good that you are taking control of your relationships? That you are seeing through the lies of men?”
Victim: “He turned on me. I thought he was my friend, my support, my lifeline. Now I have no-one.”
Therapist: “You have yourself, your freedom, your ability to end toxic relationships. You are your own woman. Aren’t you glad about that?”
Victim: “This just hurts me so much, him telling me I deserved being abused and suffocated.”
Therapist: “And how do you feel about finally getting to see the real person this fellow is, not the one who you thought was there?”
Victim: “Angry. Really pissed off. Depressed.”
Therapist: “That’s good, that’s good you can articulate your feelings. It’s good you are now no longer taking it like a victim. Isn’t that good?”
Victim: “I am so fucking mad at him, at myself, for trusting him.”
Therapist: “Do you feel like this session thus far is helping you find your voice and agency?”
Victim: “Yeah, right, but I am mad and agry.”
tertiarily: “Anger is an okay feeling, as long as it’s directed at him, not on yourself. Do you understand?”
Victim: “I guess. I guess I shouldn’t blame myself. You’re right. I can see that even this guy I called a friend is just another fucking male abuser.”
Therapist: “This is progress. You are no longer blaming yourself for other people’s actions. You are not responsible for other people’s actions.”
Victim: “I feel betrayed and I am angry.”
Therapist: “Those are good feelings to have as long as you do not blame yourself.”

That’s a make-believe-but-not-so-far-from-reality session I can imagine this friend will be going through.
You see, I vouched for my friend here with another friend up north — an old guy, who wanted to help a woman in distress (40 years old). He is not made of money, and in fact, he is precarious financially and otherwise. The loan was supposed to be a short term loan. Based on some money my female “friend” would be getting in a divorce settlement. Money for her to leave the house the ex owned free and clear. She was facing contempt of court and eviction from this house. So, the idea was an RV, a trailer, used, to hold her over. To allow her to not worry about being homeless or being in the house where her ex assaulted her.
You see, the ex is a serial abuser, and he found my “friend” a perfect mark. She returned to him literally dozens of times. Left on the side of the road, out camping, he just fucking kept all finances in his name, and she was his vomit cleaner, his punching bag. She kept the serial abuse quiet, from her family.
I came into the picture because SHE reached out. So, for more than two years, I was both a side therapist, a shoulder to cry on, a supporter and defender of her, and navigator.
BUT the fucking Benjamins, man!
The fucking money, man. She lied, she said she was selling the trailer, and I said, “well, that’s your decision (Her counselor said — “got for it”) but not the best in my opinion . . . . “ And she was reminded by me a dozen times — “Pay Kerry back. Pay him the full amount or at least $7,000 upon receipt of divorce settlement. It turns out she lied about finding a place for $300 a month, at a friend’s house, and she lied about selling the trailer. She told my old old friend that she gave the money away. You know, $12,000 is what she paid for it and she told me she got that same amount for it. She GAVE it away. I bet that counselling session is one fucked up validating her feelings session.e
This is a disaster. This is a case of untreated psychiatric issues that her counselor knows shit about, cares shit about, and has no tools for her to remedy. This “friend” should have, through this fucking $175 a session “counselor,” found group therapy program in a domestic violence recovery program.
Look, the mess just gets cemented. That scenario I put above, well, get this:
I told this “friend” — “Pay back Kerry. You lied. You gave the money away? Explain.”
Victim/”friend”: “I am an adult. Quit bullying me. I don’t have to tell you what I did with the money.”
So, back and forth, and she’s living (she says) in a vehicle with a big dog, and alas, that’s what she did for 4.5 years over and over and over with this abuser. And, so, by me saying, “My god, you are acting just like Bob, the abuser. You are treating Kerry like your ex treated you. This is abuse. These are lies. This was not your money to steal. You and your ex are sure alike,” I am an abuser!
Then there it is: She’ll go to the counselor, driving to her place in her car and home, with dog couped up, and have her crying game, and say that ,he (me) said I deserved what I got from Bob . . . that I deserved the abuse. That I deserved him as a husband.’

Therapists! Most most of the time they are semi-failed humans. Not deep thinkers. Not deeper readers. Not deep humans. So, the therapies and the bullshit sessions, all for nothing when the therapist is so fucking hands off that she-he won’t say that doing bad things, like ripping off people who have given floundering people loans, is just bad mojo, bad ethics, bad principles, bad all around.
Forget about the reasons therapy fails, but these are fucking 4th grad level on-line crap points.
1. Bad fit between therapist and client

3. Client is resistant to change

Therapy is a Scam! – The truth about mental health and big pharma !! Yes, you read that right; therapy is a scam. In a world where phrases like “mental health matters” seem to greet you every direction you look, it almost seems forbidden to utter the kind of remark you’d expect from your grandfather who exclaims, “therapy is for suckers!” While I don’t hold the sentiment that therapy has no value, he does raise a point: Are therapists really swindling our money? The short answer is yes, the field of professional help and the pharmaceutical industry is rigged with financial traps and emotional roller-coasters that run for as far as the skeptic’s eye can see.
The last decade worked hard to destigmatize mental illnesses, and contemporary culture finally recognizes that everyone can benefit from therapeutics, not just “those crazy people that belong in the loony bin,” as the older generation says. However, if you haven’t been dragged into the mess of professional help, there’s a misconception that once you finally seek a therapist, their help will…help.
Therapists are never available to begin with, and after months of waiting for a consultation, you enter Susan’s soothing lavender room, complete with a stress toy and a place to vent. But on your second visit, you realize Susan only asked variations of “so how does that make you feel?”, made surface level insights, and suggested general coping mechanisms that could be doled out to anyone. You walk out feeling more anxious than when you walked in, and that complementary stress ball is soon to be on life support. You end up asking yourself, “is this what therapy was all cracked up to be? No thank you, I think I’ll stick to my beer and Sunday football.”
The typical rebuttal is “you just have to find the one you click with!” But why should I, the patient, have to go on a wild-goose-chase for a therapist that “works” for me? They should just…work. A highly qualified therapist would be sharp and strategically personalize their treatments for each of their clients. Leapfrogging through the field of therapists illustrates a fundamental flaw in our approach to treatment. Clearly, schools of psychology need to increase the rigor of their programs and raise the standards to be a certified therapist. To put it into perspective, we easily give doctors access to our bodies; their job is to maintain our physical health. Would you trust therapists to have unrestricted access to the depths of your mind because their job is to maintain our mental health? Would you be okay with allowing a surgeon who botched surgeries sometimes?
So therapists who never give advice, never help mentor, who never take the world as it should be — from a more or less right ethical filter/lens — will end up never ever, most of the time, telling the client what’s right and what’s wrong. Or ask him or her what the background stories and context are.
Case in point: A Friend loaned $14,000 to a person I vouched for. All to help her get through trauma – – domestic violence and batter wife syndrome. Out Of The Goodness Of His Heart. And, this fellow was expecting it to be a carry-over short term deal.
Now? This human victim is victimizing the person who helped her get into a place so she would not be homeless, or living in her car with dog.
Now, the kicker is this person is now saying she got rid of the $14,000, but won’t tell me or the lender what the fuck happened. She bought a trailer to live in — with his money — and she used that lender’s money for the trailer.
Instead, she yammered about it being too confining, too this, too isolating, too expensive for the trailer park rental. She then ups and selling the trailer (or just giving it away and towed away), and never told me or the fellow/loaner until AFTER the fact.
We expected repayment IMMEDIATELY. Instead, we got lies. We got no fucking real conversation. Nothing. And she will be running to the $175 an hour therapist and get more nothing burger nothing advice.
We got the fucking lying, mean, duplicituous crap that exactly what her abuser had done to her — plenty of economic abuse. Now? Fucking ECONOMIC abuse to an old man who loaned her — read, LOANED her — the money.
I did the stories on Domestic Abuse. Yep, it is a tragedy:
I am a counselor in Bluffton, South Carolina, and my state has the shameful distinction of being No. 1 in the rate of women killed in domestic violence incidents. My heart breaks to think of the carnage behind the doors of my community, and yet I find there is little understanding of what domestic violence is all about and why it continues.
Here’s what some of the latest statistics say about domestic violence:
In the United States, about half of all women and men will experience psychological aggression by an intimate partner in their lifetimes (48.4% and 48.8%, respectively).
An average of 24 people each minute become victims of rape, physical violence, or stalking from an intimate partner in the U.S. This equates to roughly 12 million men and women each year.
In the U.S., about 3 in 10 women (29%) and 1 in 10 men (10%) have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by a partner and subsequently report the experience having a related impact on their physical and mental health.
Intimate partner violence affects more than 12 million people each year (National Domestic Violence Hotline, 2015).
Domestic violence, also known as intimate partner violence, is a very real problem that is often only whispered about behind closed doors or routinely clothed in shame when it comes to light. Its victims may be trapped in relationships where they do not see a way out.
To decrease stigma and help people understand domestic violence, here are five things everyone should know about it:
1. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS ABOUT POWER AND CONTROL.
Domestic violence occurs when one or both partners exert their will over the other. It isn’t about love and concern for a partner; it’s about dominating the other. Violence will look different in each relationship, but the pattern of control is consistent and may or may not turn into physical abuse.
2. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE MAY ENTAIL MORE THAN PHYSICAL ABUSE.
Domestic violence is not always physical; it can also be emotional, sexual, or economic. The impact of physical violence may be easier to conceptualize, which is why many people associate domestic violence with an image of battered lovers. However, emotional, sexual, and financial abuse can be as severe and keep the victim trapped in a devastating reality without displaying obvious signs of abuse.
Physical violence, by its nature of often leaving visible marks, can be easier to identify, but counselors and therapists regularly hear the misguided notion that if a person hasn’t been battered and bruised, then no abuse has occurred. This minimizes an experience that isn’t entirely physical and can keep a victim from seeking help.
Abusive behaviors may include:
Telling victims they can’t leave because they are unlovable
Insisting victims participate in sexual behavior in which they don’t want to participate
Damaging the victim’s property
Threatening to harm pets or children if the victim doesn’t do what the abusive person requires
Stalking
Extreme controlling behaviors
Blaming the victim for violent or inappropriate behavior
Displays of physical aggression without making contact with the victim (such as hitting the wall during an argument)
3. NO TWO SITUATIONS ARE EXACTLY ALIKE.
Victims of domestic violence are found in every culture, economic status, sexual orientation, race, and neighborhood. There is no typical victim, nor is there a typical offender.
4. MARRIAGE COUNSELING MAY NOT BE A GOOD IDEA IF THERE IS ACTIVE VIOLENCE.
I understand the desire to get an abusive spouse or partner into a therapy session and have someone help explain that the behavior is inappropriate. However, couples counseling when active abuse is occurring may escalate any violence. In many cases, it’s advised that the person engaging in domestic violence be treated for domestic violence/anger management before marriage counseling can be safe or effective.
5. PEOPLE WHO STAY IN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS ARE NOT “STUPID” OR “WEAK.”
People stay in abusive relationships for many reasons. Many begin to Victims of domestic violence are found in every culture, economic status, sexual orientation, race, and neighborhood. There is no typical victim, nor is there a typical offender.believe negative statements about themselves that the abusive person has told them over and over. They may not have the resources or finances to leave. They may not even realize the situation is abusive and thus believe it is “normal.”
Domestic violence is rarely happening at all times, and those who abuse are often apologetic after an incident. There’s a cycle to the abuse, and a victim may have hope things will change or believe the person displaying the abusive behavior didn’t mean it. A victim may stay to maintain a home for their children, be afraid of losing custody, or worry about being unable to protect children during visitation. They may be embarrassed or still love their abusive partner. The list of reasons victims stay is long, and the reality of their situations is often complex.

Others keep trying, even as it becomes clear they aren’t really getting what they need, whatever that is.
But the American mental health care system has hardly acknowledged the existence of bad therapy, let alone taken steps to fix the problem. Instead, in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, which sent the demand for therapy soaring, the American Psychological Association and other organizations seemed to prioritize the quantity of available appointments over the quality of any resulting therapy. The rise of app-based mental health care, like BetterHelp and Talkspace, has only made this landscape harder to navigate.
The result is that everyone is telling everyone else to go to therapy, but “nobody really creates space to have dialog about, ‘OK, if it doesn’t work, let’s talk about why,’” says psychotherapist Ben Fineman, cohost of the Very Bad Therapy podcast with Carrie Wiita. That’s partly out of fear of uncertainty, which therapists dislike as much as anyone, and partly because reforming mental health care is complicated. But ignoring these shortcomings is only perpetuating the suffering therapy promises to heal. (Why Therapy is Broken)
New York City has the biggest deficit out of the 75 most populous cities in the U.S., put at a whopping $171.5 billion in 2021 by the organization. However, when comparing with an earlier report citing 2017 numbers, the city’s debt has gone down by around 11%. In contrast, the rest of the top 5 municipal debtors in the U.S. have piled on rather than shed liabilities in the past four years.
This phenomenon is most visible in New Orleans, where municipal debt per taxpayer increased by almost a third since 2017 and now stands at $22,700. The city rose from being the 10th most in debt to the 5th most in debt during this time frame. Portland meanwhile climbed from rank 8 into rank 4.
Where are the employee pensions?
A major point that Truth in Accounting is pointing out in its reports is how excessive municipal debt can endanger city workers’ pensions and similar benefits. In the case of New Orleans, the report states that only 55 cents for every dollar of pledged pension benefits had been put away. In Portland, this number stood even lower at only 44 cents to the dollar.
Despite being obligated to pay employees’ pension and retiree health care benefits when these come up, many cities decide to put off building these funds and even omit the respective items from city balance sheets. Balancing a budget by only listing payments going out or coming in during a specific fiscal year is another insufficient technique applied by cities, according to the report, as it fails to account for obligations a city might incur and would have to start putting money aside for in that year. Pension funds are often invested in the stock market, adding potential for solid returns but also risk—as the market situation in 2022 has shown.

Sobering Statistics
The study, called Financial State of the Cities 2023, was done by Truth in Accounting. It has some difficult truths: 50 out of 75 cities could not pay their bills; the combined debt for all 75 cities is $267 billion. Moreover, elected officials didn’t include the cost of government in this figure, instead pushing it onto future taxpayers.
Cities that cannot pay their bills at the end of each fiscal year are known as ‘sinkhole’ cities, while those that can are called ‘sunshine’ cities. Each city receives grades between A and F — the lowest grade is F, which means the tax burden per citizen exceeds $20,000.
Here are the ten most fiscally troubled sinkhole cities in serious danger of bankruptcy.
1. New York City – Grade: F
New York City has always been the financial beating heart of the U.S. economy. Still, due to a backlog in unfunded retirement entitlements and a litany of bad legislative decisions, New York has the highest tax burden of any state.
2. Chicago, Illinois – Grade: F
Chicago stands at being the second-most in-debt city in America. The town faces incredible challenges with crime and now pension-based debt. The city officials only set aside 25 cents on the dollar in promised pension benefits in 2022.
3. Honolulu, Hawaii – Grade: F
The city would require $26,100 in tax recoupment from every state citizen, surpassing the F-grade threshold of $20,000 per taxpayer. Although its tax burden in 2020 was over half a billion more than now, it still finished the fiscal year with a $3.3 billion deficit. Honolulu sits third out of the 75 cities.
4. Portland, Oregon – Grade: F
With a higher debt of $5.2 billion, Portland wins an F for its fiscal health. However, thanks to Portland’s larger population, its tax burden is lower than Honolulu’s. Despite a short-term boost to its pension assets’ valuation, Portland only put aside 44 cents on the dollar for promised pension benefits.
5. New Orleans, Louisiana – Grade: F
The Big Easy is 71st out of 75 cities in the study, sitting within the dreaded F-zone for their fiscal report. In the past, city officials have been guilty of underfunding pension entitlements and reneging on retiree health care pledges. Moreover, the city is one of many that submitted their fiscal report late, meaning poorer fiscal conduct worsened their total debt.
6. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Grade: F
The post-pandemic landscape has looked better for Philly of late; however, they still have an F for their almost $12 billion deficit. However, Philadelphia is a large city, so to balance the books, taxpayers would need to stump up $21,800 per person.
7. St. Louis, Missouri – Grade: D
The Gateway to the West has a much lower deficit than its predecessor and drops into the D column, with a lower tax burden of $18,000. However, things are not looking good with an unbudgeted $654.5 million in health care retiree entitlements for city workers due.
8. Dallas, Texas – Grade: D
In 2022, dormant retirement obligations and negative market returns affected Dallas’ fiscal health, leaving the city with $5.9 billion in debt. This figure amounts to $14,700 needed for each taxpayer to help Dallas’ monetary troubles.
9. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Grade: D
Elected officials’ decisions have added to Pittsburgh’s woes, and the city currently has an unpaid debt of $1.5 billion. Federal pandemic funding ran dry during a bearish year for the markets. Subsequently, Pittsburgh’s taxpayers would need to pay $14,600 each to save Steel City’s financial bacon.
10. Miami, Florida – Grade: D
Finally, Miami steals in for the tenth spot. The Magic City has almost $2 billion of unfunded pension and healthcare benefits, with a $14,000 tax burden for its employed residents. However, pension debt is decreasing. Curiously, the police and firefighters’ pension plan investments reached almost 20% returns in 2021.”

I have a PhD from the University of Minnesota’s Medical School. There is a good reason why MDs will often also get a PhD if they wish to a significant amount of research during their career: MDs simply do not get the rigorous education in how to do science that PhDs do; and this shows in the AAP “study”.
Let’s first consider toxicity. Safety Data Sheets, a standard for toxicity assessments used world-wide shows that the caffeine in your coffee or tea is 13 times more toxic than glyphosate, noting also that caffeine is intentionally ingested while glyphosate ingestion is incidental and, therefore, at a much lower concentration than the caffeine in your coffee, tea or cola.
On to carcinogenicity: As a result of a determination by the IARC in 2015 that glyphosate was “probably carcinogenic in humans”, the on-going US Ag Health Study, the largest, and most rigorous study of its kind, which in 2005 had determined that there was no significant incidence of cancer from the use of glyphosate, was updated and re-reviewed for data through 2012.
This was published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (Andreotti et al 2018 JNCI) and again determined that “glyphosate was not statistically significantly associated with cancer at any site.”
Additionally, it should be noted that glyphosate has been recently re-registered for use by both the US EPA and most recently also by the EU, both noting that the IARC is the only regulatory review group of significance that has suggested a cancer risk from glyphosate use vs multiple other regulatory agencies worldwide, including US EPA, Health Canada, EFSA, Frances’ ANSES, Germany’s BfR, Switzerland’s FSVO and Australia’s APVMA.

Numerous scientists have criticized the EPA and EFSA for their findings of non carcinogenicity.
They were criticized because 1. they gave more weight to non published or peer reviewed industry funded studies than to the peer reviewed scientific literature, 2. they gave more weight to studies looking at pure glyphosate rather than the formulations used by farmers, and 3. they did not look nearly as closely at the carcinogenicity resulting from higher exposures such as might happen to a pesticide applicator. In addition a number of their countries do not allow GMO crops. This means despite the stalemate in their regulatory system, they are allowing much less use than is allowed in the U.S.
Since you are there, Mr Pilacinski, from the coalface at Monsanto as it were, I would love to hear your opinion about some research which I believe was undertaken by Monsanto itself in 1989, I think. It is an experiment on Bluegill Sunfish. As glyphosate is an analogue of glycine, a very important amino acid in the body, it is possible that the analogue glyphosate can actually take the place of, or act as a ligand in place of glycine. As I understand it, this unpublished (why?) experiment was conducted to see if glyphosate was incorporated into the fish tissues. I believe the experiment rather shockingly showed that it did. If glyphosate has the ability to act in this way in the body, then such disruption could possibly lead to dysfunctions that could in the long term promote ill health, and maybe cancers. I genuinely and respectfully welcome the opportunity to put this to someone who is or was very directly ‘in the know’ about this.

Vinyl chloride is one of around 10,000 chemicals that have been used in plastics, according to one estimate. Over 2,400 of those chemicals are of concern to scientists, meaning they’re either toxic or persist in the environment and organisms. According to the National Cancer Institute, vinyl chloride is associated with lymphoma, leukemia, and cancers of the brain and lungs. One study found that workers exposed to PVC dust had significantly higher risk of cancer.

While the Mexican army and marines still have superior firepower, the drug cartels’ weaponry often now outclasses other branches of Mexican law enforcement.
On Monday, an appeals court in Boston, Massachusetts handed Mexico a victory in one of those actions, reviving a $10 billion lawsuit against seven U.S. gun manufacturers and one distributor. Mexico argued the companies knew weapons were being sold to traffickers who smuggled them into Mexico and decided to cash in on that market.
In 2022, a U.S. federal judge dismissed Mexico’s claims based on the broad protection provided to gun manufacturers by a 2005 U.S. law, the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, or PLCAA. The law shields gun manufacturers from damages “resulting from the criminal or unlawful misuse” of a firearm.
Mexico appealed that ruling, and on Monday the U.S. First Circuit Court of Appeals revived the lawsuit, saying the PLCAA did not apply to the claims the guns caused deaths, damages and injuries in Mexico. The appeals court returned the case to the lower court, to consider the facts in the case.
The Mexican government estimates 70% of the weapons trafficked into Mexico come from the U.S., according to the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
Also Monday, describing talks last week with U.S. officials, Bárcena said the United States is planning to announce sanctions against airlines and transportation companies that move migrants to South and Central America and through Mexico to the U.S. border.
“The United States said it was going to impose sanctions on South American and Central American companies that are transporting migrants irregularly, and they want us to do the same,” Bárcena said. “The (Mexican) Interior Department is going to call on the bus and airline companies, but we don’t want them (the United States) to act unilaterally.”

Ishmael’ by Daniel Quinn and the movement it inspired
This is a story about a blue crab killed for no good reason.
It is a story about birth and rebirth, law and life, nature and nurture, cooperation and connection, cultivation and civilization, production and destruction, seed and greed, Adam and Eve.
It is a story about “Ishmael.”
“Ishmael,” a 1992 Daniel Quinn novel, sounded an alarm on civilization’s war on Earth, embarked on 10,000 years ago at the beginning of the agricultural revolution. It illuminated the way in which that revolution continues with blindness and madness, killing or swallowing all life — plant, creature or human — that stands in the way of its appetite for expansion. It urged us to wake up.
I came upon the book almost 10 years ago during a time in which my heart — perhaps remembering a life-inspiring lesson from childhood — beat for books about the natural world, especially those that carried a historical, cultural or spiritual component. Thoreau’s “Walden” begot Derrick Jensen’s “A Language Older than Words,” which begot Riane Eisler’s “The Chalice & the Blade,” with some Barbara Kingsolver mixed in. The latter two books beautifully bemoaned loss — “Language” the loss of our connection to the stars and streams, “Chalice” the loss of our connection to the sacred feminine. Both books explored an insane world run by men.
“Ishmael” featured an inviting subtitle: “An Adventure of the Mind and Spirit.” It also carried on the cover this blurb by Jim Britell of Whole Earth Review: “From now on, I will divide the books I have read into two categories — the ones I read before Ishmael and those read after.”
I now divide the books I have read into two categories — the ones that slap me in the face and the ones that don’t. “Ishmael” slapped me in the face: Humanity isn’t destroying the earth. One culture that now rules the globe is destroying the earth. That is our culture, whose objective is to bulldoze everything in its way and to put everybody at the wheel. The objective is food production and growth, and the target is any forest and any life — plant, animal or human — that occupies it. This is true whether in Brazil, China, Russia or the United States. Our culture won’t stop until it devours everything, including itself.
My grandparents passed this culture to my parents, who passed it to me. I passed it to my kids, who no doubt will pass it to theirs. We do so unwittingly, much the way we commuters sleepwalk en masse from the train to our office buildings, unconscious but of our iPhones. As the book points out, we’re on a crash course.
I’ve been thinking about “Ishmael” lately because of a new book I just finished: “Life’s Operating Manual,” by Tom Shadyac, director of films such as “Bruce Almighty” and “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.” I read it because of the story of Shadyac, who sold his Hollywood mansion and moved into a mobile-home park. He writes in his book that he did that and gave away money because “it felt like the right thing to do.”
Shadyac’s book, broader in its cultural message and more spiritually focused than “Ishmael,” told me little new. But it did offer strong reminders on ideas that resonate with me, such as the value of true wealth over material wealth (“I do not wish to redistribute wealth; I wish to redefine it,” Shadyac writes); the problem of a cultural mentality that inspires competition and profit over cooperation and people; and the importance of our culture to recognize and embrace our connection to all things — each other and nature.
The book also pays tribute to “Ishmael” and to Quinn, its author. Shadyac writes: “Ishmael” grabbed “me by my throat in a literary vise grip. Quinn’s chokehold is rooted in a simple idea: that our culture has seduced us, hypnotized us really, into wholeheartedly embracing a way of life that may have little to do with reality.”
Shadyac’s book prompted me to read “Ishmael” again and to write about it.
Early in the book, a man, the narrator, answers a newspaper ad that says:
“TEACHER seeks pupil. Must have an earnest desire to save the world. Apply in person.”
The narrator meets the teacher — Ishmael, a thousand-pound gorilla who communicates telepathically. Using the Socratic method, Ishmael implores the narrator to think for himself on “how things came to be this way” and to come to the understanding that our culture has been enacting a story from the book of Genesis: that Man is here to conquer the earth.
Ishmael separates humans into two groups — “Leavers” and “Takers.” “Leavers” formed cultures that thrived for thousands of years before the agricultural revolution — hunters and gatherers, herders, indigenous societies. Those cultures lived lightly and took only what they needed. “Takers” are us — the people who killed or annexed those cultures and continue to do so; logging and farming in the Amazon threatens some of the last uncontacted tribes on Earth.
“Mother Culture teaches you that this is as it should be,” Ishmael tells the narrator. “Except for a few thousand savages scattered here and there, all the peoples of the earth are now enacting this story. This is the story man was born to enact [according to the mythology], and to depart from it is to resign from the human race itself. … There’s no way out of it except through death.”
Unlike “Leaver” societies, which sustained themselves and the natural world for thousands of years, our “Taker” society will run out of things to kill and will die. Quinn likens the agricultural revolution to humans’ first attempts at flight. Those attempts failed because we tried to mimic a bird. Only when we discovered the law of aerodynamics did we learn to fly.
Through “Ishmael,” Quinn argues that no law or theory underpins “Taker” culture — and that’s why it has been in free fall since its adoption.
Quinn emphasizes that the natural world, which includes “Leaver” cultures, sustains itself through what he calls the law of limited competition. Under this peace-keeping law, he says, you may not hunt down competitors or deny them food or access to it. You also may not commit genocide against your competition.
“And only once in all the history of this planet has any species tried to live in defiance of this law — and it wasn’t an entire species, it was only one people, those I’ve named the Takers,” Ishmael tells the narrator. “Ten thousand years ago, this one people said, ‘No more. Man was not meant to be bound by this law,’ and they began to live in a way that flouts the law at every point.”
People have asked me why I don’t just become a hunter-gatherer. I have no interest in becoming a hunter-gatherer — and I know my wife, who focuses on the good in our society, wouldn’t, either. I wouldn’t know what to do and especially where to go. My problem is less with civilization than the aggressiveness and mindlessness of this one. As Quinn points out in “Ishmael,” civilization isn’t against the law of limited competition; it’s subject to the law of limited competition.
While writing this essay, I took a break to go with my wife and son to see the Chicago Symphony Orchestra perform at the Morton Arboretum. As I listened, I thought about all the beauty this culture has produced.
Yet I yearn to live in a civilization that blends less madness with its music. I yearn to live in a civilization that redefines not only wealth but profit. A new shopping center and fast-food restaurant turns up trees by the roots but lifts no spirit. A lawn built on chemical products kills the dandelion but misses the miracle. A daytime flight over Chicago anticipates the skyline but ignores the slaughter. I yearn to live in a civilization that aviates consciously.
I know of like minds who found inspiration in “Ishmael.”
“When I was a legal advocate for chemical victims, I was already well aware of the distorted values at work in our culture,” Earon Davis, a former Chicago resident who recently moved to Bloomington, Ind., wrote in an email. “‘Ishmael’ helped me to see that our entire society’s sustainability and adaptability were being jeopardized by corrupted group-think in our mainstream culture.”
Davis said he tried to establish a Chicago-based discussion group related to “Ishmael” but got limited participation. He continues to lead a Web-based discussion group, which sees little activity.
“I can see how most people who are initially drawn to ‘Ishmael’ need to back away from the message of Quinn in order to focus on earning a living, raising a family, and living a ‘normal’ life,” he wrote.
Barbara Ridd said she incorporates “Ishmael” into the curriculum of a course called Ecology of Personal Life at DePaul University’s School for New Learning. She said the book offends some students who feel it questions the Bible.
“I think that closes those people off to the greater message, that we have to take stock of ourselves,” she said. “I think that sometimes, when given such a blunt look at our existence as mankind, people don’t like that as well.”
Laura M. Hartman, assistant professor of religion at Augustana College in Rock Island, said she read “Ishmael” for two courses as an undergraduate at Indiana University. “The general concept of ‘Takers’ and ‘Leavers’ still resonates with me,” she said. Yet she sees a weakness in the book: Instead of providing instructions on how to change the world, Quinn appeals for changed minds.
“The clock is ticking,” she said. “We don’t have time to make these inner transformations.”
This essay serves as an attempt to inspire transformations, anyway.
Now, about that blue crab.
I was about 9 years old. My father had long left us, and my mother had met the man who would raise me. We lived on a canal in Florida. He liked hunting and fishing, and he had a tremendous love and respect for nature. I liked baseball and football. I couldn’t bear the sight of a dead fish or animal — and I especially couldn’t kill one. So I rarely would go hunting or fishing with him.
But I desperately wanted to please him. One day, I lost my childhood senses and, for a moment, all that I loved. I spotted a blue crab in the canal in about two feet of water. I grabbed the gig that my stepfather kept by the canal. I thrust the gig into the water and speared the crab though her core. I raised the gig from the water, the crab moving its claws and legs as if searching for food or for any sense in this.
I ran joyfully to my stepfather, carrying the gig and the mortally wounded crab at the end of it as my trophy, and showed him what I’d just done for him. I told him I thought he’d want it for dinner. I expected a “that’s my boy” and a hug. I got a scolding. I got a demand that I eat what I’d just killed.
I got the lesson of my life — a lesson and law that I’ve carried with me, passed to my children and hope that they pass to theirs: You may not kill any member of the community of life for no good reason.

Minister Naledi Pandor says all states have a legal obligation to ensure respect for the provisional measures, and not be complicit in genocide.
South Africa’s Minister of International Relations, Naledi Pandor, has warned that all states have a legal obligation to uphold the provisional measures ordered by the ICJ in regard to Israel’s actions in Gaza, adding that failure to do so is complicity in the crimes of genocide.
