“You need to get on the gurney now,” the police officer said, leaning toward me.
This was a pivotal moment in my life — my first psychotic episode — but one I cannot remember. Looking back through the haze of psychosis, I see only the rough outline of a police officer standing in the door of my apartment. I was on a knife’s edge without knowing it. If I had resisted arrest, brandished something resembling a weapon, or reached for the officer’s gun, I might well be dead.
Nothing in my past foreshadowed this moment. I had graduated from Princeton summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. After Yale Law School, I clerked for two federal judges. And in the days leading up to the police encounter, I won my first jury trial.
What could have been the end for me turned out to be a new beginning. I made a career change, from litigation associate to law professor. For the past 13 years I have taught, researched, and written about mental health law, including criminal justice issues. One of my ideas to reduce suicide is now law in three states. One of my first assignments as a news reporter for newspapers was in Arizona. Going out to the house where a thrity-five year old had been blasted away by one deputy sheriff with nine slugs.
The man was in his mother’s yard. It has a three foot old chainlink fence around it. She called the 911 because her Vietnam War veteran son (he was there as a fucking 17 year old) was off some antipsychoitc meds and was in the yard yelling at gooks and VC. He had a Buck knife, a five inhc blade. He was shirtless, and it was hot. He was sweating, his mom was on the porch to their single-wide trailer, and two muts were running around.
She called to get someone — or people — to talk him down to take his meds. Instead, gunslinger fucking Pima County Sheriff came out swaggering, man, and yelling as soon as he got out of his fucking squad car. He called for back-up.
I wasn’t there, but showed up a day later. My assignment as to get her story, her son’s that is, and interview friends at two of the dive bars, and a VFW way away from the place. I also tracked down the mailman to talk to him about this guy, we’ll call Mark.
The fucking Sheriff would not let me talk to the fucking pig that did what he did. I did get some stories from people at the bar, some kids who rode dirt motorcycles and one of the local priests.
Cop yells to put down the knife. Mark stays on his side of the fucking fence. He tells the pig to fuck off, go away, or he’ll knife him.
Again, on his mother’s property. The pig was on the other side of the fence. He kep yelling at Mark to put the weapon down. After about the fifth time, deputy John Fucking Wayne had his weapon drawn A Baretta 9mm.
Mark told the pig to fuck off, to come and fight him, and Mark said he’d go inside and get his mom’s shotgun.
Freeze, on your knees, drop the weapon, do not retreat, stay put, now, drop it, do not approach me at the fence, drop it now, now now.
Yeah, six or seven slugs into the guy. He stopped, he dropped, and he went to his knees and then flat on his face. Two more squad cars came barrelling down dirt roads and approached. The mother ran toward her son. The pig told her to stop, hands up, gun pointed at her.
Yeah, Mark, it turned out, was a fucking Tunnel Rat in Vietnam.

Yeah, I got the hard look at age 20 with editors who did not want me to include all the interviews I had with buddies, friends, the priest, the teens on cycles, the lot of them. It turned out that this community had some bad run ins not just with the Pima County sheriff Department, but with this mother-fucker.

From 2017 through the end of 2020, police killed 356 individuals where the initial reason for the encounter was mental illness, erratic behavior, or suicide, and no weapon or threat to others was noted, according to the police reform organization Campaign Zero. That’s a lot of people, but maybe all those police killings were justified by a high risk of danger posed by individuals with mental illness? If that were true, one would expect many police officers to have died at the hands of individuals with mental illness. In fact, FBI crime data shows only one police officer in the entire country during this four-year period was killed “handling [a] person with mental illness.”
“Neither the Constitution, nor state law, impose a general duty upon police officers or other governmental officials to protect individual persons from harm — even when they know the harm will occur,” said Darren L. Hutchinson, a professor and associate dean at the University of Florida School of Law. “Police can watch someone attack you, refuse to intervene and not violate the Constitution.”
The Supreme Court has repeatedly held that the government has only a duty to protect persons who are “in custody,” he pointed out.

These were the words of Ben Arad, an 18-year-old Israeli conscientious objector, shortly before he reported to the Israeli army’s recruitment center near Tel Aviv on April 1 and declared his refusal to enlist in mandatory military service, in protest of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza and the long-standing occupation.
Arad is the third Israeli teenager to publicly refuse the draft for political reasons since October 7, and was tried and sentenced to an initial 20 days in military prison. He follows Tal Mitnick, who has served 105 days in prison across three sentences, and Sofia Orr, who has served 40 days in prison across two sentences — neither of whom have yet been exempted from military service, meaning they may still be sentenced to further stints in prison.

“We were not interested in killing [Hamas] operatives only when they were in a military building or engaged in a military activity. On the contrary, the IDF bombed them in homes without hesitation, as a first option. It’s much easier to bomb a family’s home. The system is built to look for them in these situations.”

She said she decided to be euthanized after her doctors told her, “There’s nothing more we can do for you. It’s never gonna get any better.”
She is just one of the growing number of people in the West who have decided to die rather than continue living in pain that, unlike a terminal illness, could be treated.
More people are deciding to end their lives while suffering from a slew of other mental health problems like depression or anxiety amplified by economic uncertainty, climate change, social media and other issues.
“I’m seeing euthanasia as some sort of acceptable option brought to the table by physicians, by psychiatrists, when previously it was the ultimate last resort,” Stef Groenewoud, a health care ethicist at Theological University Kampen, in the Netherlands, told the outlet.
“I see the phenomenon especially in people with psychiatric diseases, and especially young people with psychiatric disorders, where the health care professional seems to give up on them more easily than before,” she added.
Ter Beek plans to be cremated after she’s euthanized on the couch in her living room.
“No music,” she said.
A doctor will first give her a sedative, followed by a drug that will stop her heart. Her boyfriend will be at her side until the end.
“The doctor really takes her time. It is not that they walk in and say, ‘Lay down, please!’ Most of the time it is first a cup of coffee to settle the nerves and create a soft atmosphere,” she said.
“Then she asks if I am ready. I will take my place on the couch. She will once again ask if I am sure, and she will start up the procedure and wish me a good journey. Or, in my case, a nice nap, because I hate it if people say, ‘Safe journey.’ I’m not going anywhere.”

There are no surprises in Gaza. Every horrifying act of Israel’s genocide has been telegraphed in advance. It has been for decades. The dispossession of Palestinians of their land is the beating heart of Israel’s settler colonial project. This dispossession has had dramatic historical moments — 1948 and 1967 — when huge parts of historic Palestine were seized and hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were ethnically cleansed. Dispossession has also occurred in increments — the slow-motion theft of land and steady ethnic cleansing in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
The incursion on Oct. 7 into Israel by Hamas and other resistance groups, which left 1,154 Israelis, tourists and migrant workers dead and saw about 240 people taken hostage, gave Israel the pretext for what it has long craved — the total erasure of Palestinians.
Israel has razed 77 percent of healthcare facilities in Gaza, 68 percent of telecommunication infrastructure, nearly all municipal and governmental buildings, commercial, industrial and agricultural centers, almost half of all roads, over 60 percent of Gaza’s 439,000 homes, 68 percent of residential buildings — the bombing of the Al-Taj tower in Gaza City on Oct. 25, killed 101 people, including 44 children and 37 women, and injured hundreds — and obliterated refugee camps. The attack on the Jabalia refugee camp on Oct. 25 killed at least 126 civilians, including 69 children, and injured 280. Israel has damaged or destroyed Gaza’s universities, all of which are now closed, and 60 percent of other educational facilities, including 13 libraries. It has also destroyed at least 195 heritage sites, including 208 mosques, churches, and Gaza’s Central Archives that held 150 years of historical records and documents.
Israel’s warplanes, missiles, drones, tanks, artillery shells and naval guns daily pulverize Gaza — which is only 20 miles long and five miles wide — in a scorched earth campaign unlike anything seen since the war in Vietnam. It has dropped 25,000 tons of explosives — equivalent to two nuclear bombs — on Gaza, many targets selected by Artificial Intelligence. It drops unguided munitions (“dumb bombs”) and 2000-pound “bunker buster” bombs on refugee camps and densely packed urban centers as well as the so-called “safe zones” — 42 percent of Palestinians killed have been in these “safe zones” where they were instructed by Israel to flee. Over 1.7 million Palestinians have been displaced from their homes, forced to find refuge in overcrowded UNRWA shelters, hospital corridors and courtyards, schools, tents or the open air in south Gaza, often living next to fetid pools of raw sewage.
Israel has killed at least 32,705 Palestinians in Gaza, including 13,000 children and 9,000 women. This means Israel is slaughtering as many as 187 people a day including 75 children. It has killed 136 journalists, many, if not most of them deliberately targeted. It has killed 340 doctors, nurses and other health workers — four percent of Gaza’s healthcare personnel. These numbers do not begin to reflect the actual death toll since only those dead registered in morgues and hospitals, most of which no longer function, are counted. The death toll, when those who are missing are counted, is well over 40,000.
Doctors are forced to amputate limbs without anesthetic. Those with severe medical conditions — cancer, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease — have died from lack of treatment or will die soon. Over a hundred women give birth every day, with little to no medical care. Miscarriages are up by 300 percent. Over 90 percent of the Palestinians in Gaza suffer from severe food insecurity with people eating animal feedand grass. Children are dying of starvation. Palestinian writers, academics, scientists and their family members have been tracked and assassinated. Over 75,000 Palestinians have been wounded, many of whom will be crippled for life.
“Seventy percent of recorded deaths have consistently been women and children,” writes Francesca Albanese, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967, in her report issued on March 25. “Israel failed to prove that the remaining 30 percent, i.e. adult males, were active Hamas combatants — a necessary condition for them to be lawfully targeted. By early-December, Israel’s security advisors claimed the killing of ‘7,000 terrorists’ in a stage of the campaign when less than 5,000 adult males in total had been identified among the casualties, thus implying that all adult males killed were ‘terrorists.’”
