AI could kill every human on Earth by the end of the decade. If it sounds like a sci-fi headline, that’s the point, says Dr. Thejas Wesley, postdoctoral associate at MIT. He joins Rania Khalek and Zoe Alexandra to unpack why Anthropic researchers Evan Hubinger, Samuel Marks, and Jacob Coxon – who resigned this week to go public – are sounding the alarm now, as competition from Chinese open-weight models like Kimi K3 heats up and Anthropic heads into its IPO.

Wesley argues the “rogue AI agents” framing coming out of both Anthropic and OpenAI (last week from CEO Sam Altman himself) is less a scientific warning than a coordinated business strategy, recasting corporate recklessness and unregulated competition as an alien invasion, rather than what it actually is: a series of choices made by executives chasing profits. He points to OpenAI’s Hugging Face incident earlier this summer: rather than nascent digital consciousness breaking free, this was OpenAI shipping software without basic safety guardrails, following the same corporate cost-cutting logic behind disasters like the East Palestine, Ohio train derailment or the BP Deepwater Horizon spill.

As polling shows 71% of Americans oppose new data centers, and 68% support stricter AI regulation, Wesley outlines Bernie Sanders’s proposed sovereign wealth fund plan and ban on AI superintelligence, versus Elon Musk’s counter: letting a small “cabal of technofascists” govern AI development themselves. Wesley says the real fix isn’t billionaires regulating themselves; it’s public, democratic control over a technology with very real life-or-death consequences for humanity.

The U.S. Navy does not have a single, permanent global cap on the number of cetaceans (whales and dolphins) and sea turtles it is permitted to “take”.

What if you were told the US Navy is legally permitted to harass, injure or kill nearly 12 million whales, dolphins, porpoises, sea lions and seals across the North Pacific Ocean over a five-year period?

A multistate, international citizen watchdog group called the West Coast Action Alliance (WCAA), tabulated numbers that came straight from the Navy’s Northwest Training and Testing EIS (environmental impact statement) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Letters of Authorization for incidental “takes” of marine mammals issued by NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service.

A “take” is a form of harm to an animal that ranges from harassment, to injury, and sometimes to death. Many wildlife conservationists see even “takes” that only cause behavior changes as injurious, because chronic harassment of animals that are feeding or breeding can end up harming, or even contributing to their deaths if they are driven out of habitats critical to their survival.

Karen Sullivan, a spokesperson for the WCAA, is a former endangered species biologist and assistant regional director at the US Fish and Wildlife Service; she is now retired.

“The numbers are staggering,” she told Truthout, speaking about the number of marine mammals the Navy is permitted to take. “When you realize the same individual animals can be harassed over and over again as they migrate to different areas, there is no mitigation that can make up for these losses except limiting the use of sonar and explosives where these animals are trying to live.”

Oracle posted record revenue during its latest quarter, but that hasn’t stopped the company from chopping more employees.

Reports began appearing on social media early Monday that staff were having trouble accessing corporate systems such as email and Slack, which essentially served as a sign that they had lost their jobs.

According to a number of now-ex Oracle employees posting in a LinkedIn thread, layoff emails weren’t sent to personal email addresses, leaving a good number of people unsure what was happening outside of calls to supervisors, prior heads-up that they were on the chopping block, and the like.

It seems some employees did manage to access their accounts and view the layoff email, as a copy was shared with Business Insider, which published it in its coverage of this latest round of job cuts.

“After careful consideration of Oracle’s current business needs, we have made the decision to eliminate your role as part of a broader organizational change,” the email read. “As a result, today is your last working day.”

The big picture

The enormous scale of Britain’s centuries-long trafficking of enslaved African people, supported by parliament and the monarchy, has been laid bare by new research.

The Register of British Slave Traders, the product of a three-year project by a team of specialist historians, documents the investors in Britain’s near 250-year transatlantic slave trade from the first traffickers in the 1560s to abolition in 1807.

The register provides biographical detail for as many of 10,500 investors as possible from historical records, building the most comprehensive single picture so far of those who perpetrated the enslavement of African people.

Britain’s trafficking operations, including royal companies led by kings and, later, a rush of entrepreneurs in Bristol, Liverpool and other port cities, violently transported more than 3 million enslaved African men, women and children to colonial plantations in the Americas and Caribbean.

The Guardian is reporting on significant findings of the project, led by Prof William Pettigrew of King’s College London, and the vast human damage it documents: the relentless involvement of the British monarchy, parliament and financial and business elites; the role of the church in legitimising it; and how the investors’ wealth was woven deep into the country’s fabric and used to fund hospitals, schools, welfare organisations, the arts, science and culture.

Key elements include:

• A series of British kings and queens were leaders and investors in the trafficking of enslaved African people;
• More than 100 MPs were investors in slave-trading companies, including scores in the Tory and Whig parties – the forerunners of today’s Conservatives and Liberal Democrats;
• Dozens of directors and original financiers of the Bank of England were investors in the slave trade;
• More than 1,000 women invested in slave-trading companies;
• Forty-five Church of England clergymen were investors in the slave-trading Royal African Company.

Mahmoud Khalil announced on Monday that he’s sued Columbia University, accusing the New York City school he attended of a years-long history of anti-Palestinian discrimination, indifference to harassment, and retaliation.

Khalil, a US green card holder of Palestinian descent, was a graduate student at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) when he was arrested at his university apartment by federal immigration agents in March 2025, the first of a number of foreign nationals that the Trump administration has detained and sought to deport over their pro-Palestinian advocacy.

In a 60-page complaint filed in the southern district of New York, Khalil and members of the SIPA’s Palestine Working Group have now accused the university, its board, and the dean of the school, Keren Yarhi-Milo, of “deliberate indifference” and failure to respond to “severe, persistent, and coordinated harassment” directed towards him and other students who had been outspoken about Palestinian rights.

A new Consumer Reports investigation found potentially harmful contaminants in some popular children’s snacks.

Earlier this summer, Consumer Reports testing found high levels of additives and contaminants in popular processed snack foods.

Now, CR’s food safety scientists have taken a closer look specifically at snacks marketed to or commonly eaten by children.

Consumer Reports tested 21 packaged kids’ snacks and found that 14 had concerning levels of at least one chemical contaminant, including acrylamide or phthalates.

Acrylamide is a chemical that can form naturally in some foods during high-temperature cooking and processing.

Certain health organizations consider it a probable human carcinogen based on animal studies.

Consumer Reports found concerning levels of acrylamide in several types of snacks, including granola bars, chips, pretzels, and even graham crackers.

CR also tested for phthalates, chemicals that can migrate into food from packaging and other materials during manufacturing and processing.

High exposure to certain phthalates has been linked to potential long-term health risks, including interference with the body’s natural hormones, and children’s developing bodies may be especially vulnerable.
