Oregon county adopts anti-sanctuary resolution, aligning with Trump immigration agenda despite state law
A representative with a statewide coalition supporting immigrant rights warned the county would face legal action if it attempts to implement the resolution.
The lengthy resolution, which was crafted by Commissioner Chris Boice, expressed the board’s opposition to any Oregon laws that contradict the federal administration and its current immigration enforcement crackdown. It also says the county, located in southwestern Oregon, can cooperate with federal authorities.
The resolution caused outrage among some county residents who told The Oregonian/OregonLive that it was problematic for several reasons, among them that it had not been listed on the meeting’s agenda and the public wasn’t allowed to comment. They said the board also painted a false picture at the meeting of undocumented immigrants being cartel members and drug dealers.
However, some community members who attended the meeting also appeared to be supportive of the resolution. Several people could be heard clapping after its approval.

County resident Melissa Sherwood, who attended the meeting, said Boice blamed drug trafficking in the county “on brown people without providing any evidence.”
“It’s pretty sickening. It’s pretty despicable,” she told The Oregonian/OregonLive. “But what I find incredibly upsetting about all of this is the underhanded nature in which it was done. They purposefully did not put it on the agenda, meaning we, the people, did not have a chance to comment on it.”

In February 2025, Coos County commissioners rejected a proposal to allow federal immigration officials into their jails after hearing that the measure could place the county in legal jeopardy. A few months later, Yamhill County officials deleted mention of immigration enforcement in a draft agreement with the U.S. Marshals Service after community members raised concerns.
Jess Montoya, network director of Oregon for All, a coalition of organizations in Oregon that advances immigrant justice, said the county’s resolution is in “direct contrast” to the state’s sanctuary protections.
“Our state laws are not optional,” she told The Oregonian/OregonLive. “If Douglas County attempts to implement this, this would be a violation of Oregon law, and legal action would follow.”
But it’s not clear what, if anything, the resolution will do. During the meeting, Freeman clarified it was not an ordinance, simply a resolution with the board’s opinion.
“This resolution feels like political theater,” Montoya said.

Lori Kuebler, who has lived in Roseburg for 16 years, said she believes the commissioners drafted the resolution carefully by saying it’s their “opinion” to protect themselves legally, while still potentially providing leeway to the county’s sheriff to work with federal authorities.
She said her undocumented neighbors are productive members of society.
“We have a Mexican bakery here in town. I’m friends with those people,” she told The Oregonian/OregonLive.“I worry for those people now.”

The Trump administration wants soldiers to consider becoming truck drivers when they leave the military to help replace the tens of thousands of immigrant drivers who lost their licenses in a crackdown this year.
A new campaign launched Friday will promote programs that let veterans who recently drove large military vehicles skip the required skills test for a commercial driver’s license. Other soldiers can attend a commercial driving school during their last six months of active duty. The GI Bill will also pay for 100% of commercial driver’s license training and for some people even pay a housing allowance while they are in school.
The campaign will be part of a broader interagency effort to help veterans find good civilian jobs that the White House plans to announce on Monday.
The Transportation Department began enforcing existing English language requirements for truckers last summer. Concerns about truck driver qualifications then took on more urgency after an August crash in Florida, when a truck driver performed an illegal U-turn that killed three people. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said that driver, who is from India, should never have been licensed in the first place.
26,000 drivers have been pulled off the road for failing to demonstrate English proficiency, and the Transportation Department said 30,000 commercial licenses were canceled because they were issued illegally. The federal government has tried to withhold millions of dollars of highway funds from California and New York for failing to comply and revoke thousands more licenses, but that has wound up in court. Several other states — including Pennsylvania, Minnesota and North Carolina — have been warned they are at risk of losing funding.
“We are removing more and more dangerous foreign drivers off our roads every day and restoring the integrity of America’s trucking industry,” Duffy said. “Our new Freedom Haulers campaign will help build on these successes and get the word out that there’s never been a better time for America’s former service members to get behind the wheel of a big rig.”

Led by scientists from Oceana, the Center for the Ecology and Sustainable Management of Oceanic Islands, and the Center for Advanced Studies in Arid Zones, the study used the remotely operated vehicle SuBastian aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel R/V Falkor, to survey four seamounts around the Juan Fernández Archipelago.
Three of the seamounts had a history of bottom trawling. A fourth, ecologically similar seamount called Solito, had never been trawled, providing a baseline for comparison. Solito supported thriving deep-sea coral gardens, abundant sponges, and rich invertebrate diversity. The previously trawled seamounts showed lower live coral cover, reduced biodiversity, simplified habitat structure, and clear signs of seafloor disturbance.
“This study demonstrates that the impacts of bottom trawling on deep-sea ecosystems can persist for decades,” said Dr. Ignacio Petit, Oceana scientist and lead author of the study. “Although fishing ended more than 25 years ago, recovery remains extremely limited because many affected species, particularly deep-sea corals, grow very slowly and can live for hundreds, or even thousands, of years.”
Deep-sea corals act as ecosystem engineers, their structures providing shelter, feeding grounds, and nursery habitat for fish and invertebrates. Corals that take centuries to build can be destroyed by trawling in hours.
“The presence of living corals supports higher invertebrate biomass, including commercially valuable crustaceans such as the Chilean golden crab (Chaceon chilensis) and the Juan Fernández spiny lobster (Projasus bahamondei). Conserving seamount ecosystems therefore also helps sustain local artisanal fisheries,” said Dr. Javier Sellanes, co-author of the study.

Firefighters on Friday are bracing for the possibility of continuing growth of the Aspen Acres fire, warning that storms moving into the area could fan flames with high winds.
The region has received rain, though lightning and “erratic winds” from storms have created conditions for increased fire activity and the potential for new fires to ignite, according to a Friday morning update.
The Aspen Acres fire, southwest of Pueblo, is holding steady at 101,546 acres burned with 61% containment. It remains the state’s largest fire and the seventh largest in Colorado history.
Firefighters on Thursday attacked a new fire, dubbed the Salt fire, that spread across one-fourth of an acre near the Aspen Acres fire. Helicopters transported firefighters to the new fire to build berms.

Conservative states criticize USDA probes to uncover fraud in SNAP
Blowback from Ohio and Georgia casts doubt on the credibility of USDA’s anti-fraud narrative as the federal government scrutinizes the country’s signature nutrition assistance program.
“In terms of lumping everything under fraud, I’ve never seen it done the way it’s being done right now,” said Alan Shannon, a former USDA employee who worked as a SNAP payment accuracy specialist for more than two decades. “This is highly unusual, and it’s unusual that they would be doing [press] releases on it, and that they would be calling all of this fraud, particularly when that is incorrect language to be using.”

“After looking at the most comprehensive set of data and after removing duplicates, we found that most of the anomalies flagged by the OIG were properly issued,” Ohio Department of Job and Family Services spokesperson Bill Teets said in a statement.
