Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., wants voters to see her as the woman who told ICE “not one penny more.” But as you’ll read below, her anti-ICE position is newfangled. Before opposing ICE was cool, Stevens voted multiple times to support the rogue agency terrorizing American communities.

On the other hand, Stevens’ opponent in the Michigan Senate primary, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, has opposed ICE from the jump; but his is a position untested by any voting record. That is, El Sayed’s never had a job that required him to chose Aye or Nay on things like, say, federal appropriations for the department of Homeland Security. Stevens has that job and like many Democrats, voted Aye for ICE until it was more popular to vote Nay.

Beginning in 2024, Stevens voted yes on House Resolution 1102, a $1.2 trillion omnibus that kept the government open and funded the Department of Homeland Security — ICE included — through the fiscal year.

In June 2025, she was one of 75 House Democrats to back a resolution condemning the Boulder, Colorado, terror attack that also thanked ICE agents by name for “protecting the homeland.”

And this May, according to El-Sayed’s campaign, she joined 203 House Republicans to pass the Combating Organized Retail Crime Act — legislation that hands ICE a national intelligence hub and sweeping new authority to collect Americans’ personal data under a shoplifting pretext.

Stevens has an answer for the Boulder vote. In a 2026 debate, she called the ICE language “a cynical point” Republicans slipped into a bill about condemning antisemitic violence. “I am always going to stand up to violence,” she said, “and I just wish my opponent wouldn’t pursue the cynical approaches of Republicans.” She has not offered a comparable public defense of the retail-crime vote.

It’s terrifying.

In such a short period of time, we have gone from hearing accusations against Israel about Gaza, “genocide,” and “occupation” to something even darker: the open dehumanization of Jews, the revival of blood libels, and now even public calls for “Jew hunts.”

The recent incident in Italy, where people were encouraged to identify and report Israelis and Jewish Italians, is deeply disturbing. It is symbolic of a much broader trend. The lines between “Israeli,” “Zionist,” and “Jew” are increasingly being erased, with hostility directed at Jews simply because of who they are or because of an assumed connection to Israel.

The speed at which this hatred is escalating is deeply alarming. What was once whispered is now shouted. What was once socially unacceptable is increasingly said without shame, consequence, or restraint.

None of us can predict exactly where this leads. History never repeats itself in exactly the same way. But history does teach us what can happen when hatred is normalized, when lies become accepted as truth, and when society looks away.

Many Jews are asking difficult questions. Will this pass? Is it time to leave? Should we stay? No one can answer those questions for another person.

But I will say this: we all buy life insurance, health insurance, home insurance, flood insurance, and theft insurance. We prepare for events we hope never happen.

Perhaps it’s also time for Jews around the world to ask: What is my contingency plan? What are my options? What is my family’s backup plan if circumstances change?

Some countries will undoubtedly be safer than others. Some communities will face greater challenges than others. But making a plan is not panic. It’s prudence.

Our grandparents and great-grandparents left us many lessons. One of the most important was this: don’t wait until you no longer have choices.

I sincerely hope those preparations are never needed. But hope has never been a strategy.
