I had to take a break from fucking watching lite/light/lit-up entertainment, Babylon, and it’s 2023, the USA is seeding death into Venezuela, now, and Cuba, and Iran, and anything that moves away from the unholy glare and shackles of capitalism on crack cocaine. America. China, Russia, you name it, the sights are set by the murdering incoporated.

This flick is with Brad Pitt, and alas, Holly-Dirt is still dirtier than ever, like the scum under the fingernails it always was . . . remember it’s early roots when those Jews from afar started it up.

When movies were introduced in the late 1890s, success in this new industry required many of the same skills as vaudeville and the garment trade. NASA announced Tuesday that it was under 100 days away from launching a spacecraft designed to study an asteroid potentially worth $10 quintillion.

DARPA commissioned The Computational Cultural Understanding (CCU) program to create cross-cultural language understanding technologies to improve a Department of Defense operator’s situational awareness and interactional effectiveness. Cross-cultural miscommunication not only derails negotiations, but also can be a contributing factor leading to war, according to DARPA’s explanation of the rationale for the program.

Their findings were published recently in the prestigious journal Scientific Reports.

Prof. Neuman and his engineer trained the system to identify ten social emotions: competence, politeness, trust, discipline, caring, agreeableness, success, conformity, decency, and loyalty. The system successfully characterized a written situation under one of these ten classifiers and could perceive if it was positive or negative.

The system was tested on two massive datasets of short texts and empirically proved the validity of the models.

“This is a preliminary work, but it provides strong evidence that our approach is correct and can be scaled up to include more social norms,” says Prof. Yair Neuman.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will expand its facial recognition program to around 430 US airports over the next several years following what it calls “extremely promising” results in its pilot program, according to Fast Company. He — the abuser, the narcissist, the misognist, the son-of-a-bitch pussy macho jerk — was laughing all the way, saying he was going to kill her. Of course, she didn’t die, got the phone video of his attempted murder, and called 9/11.

Cops, warrant for his arrest as he barricaded himself in a bedroom, and cry baby and he just sat it out in county jail — no drug treatment, no mental health assessment, no mental health treatment. Just a son-of-a-bitch sitting it out, hoping for dismissal or, a fucked up pleas.

Then, alas, today, July 21, the son-of-a-bitch who stayed in the County lock-up, refused to post bond, and just waited it out, refusing one plea after another until today, he took a slap on the wrist plea: two charges, of the original 12, and they are pussy charges — menacing and strangulation.

This piece of human stain pleas next week, then is sentenced, and then, he has 52 weeks of quasi supervision, and those mandatory (fucked up bullshit) classes: domestic violence, substance abuse and anger management.

If he can scam the one year, look like he is listening, then, he graduates in a year, no charges left on his record, and he is free to carry on with his serial abusing.

Now now, almost 94 percent of cases go the plea bargain shit hole route. Most counties have a shortage of prosecutors, and there is always the bullshit defense of “they overcharged you so no worries, we’ll get 90 percent of the other charges dropped.” So many violations, violators, so many crimes and over-policing, so much booze and meth and, well, you get the picture — capitalism U$A style is a cancer of violence and dysfunction.

A grand jury agreed back in Novemeber that the original 12 charges were kosher, and alas, now, a new DA today, since my friend’s original ADA from the start is knocked up, and was ready to drop another child last month. Family medical leave, maternity leave, so a new woman from this DA’s office takes the case, and this is a prosecution team of all women, and most of the judges are females in this county.

The piece of shit county prosecutor stated that it is not just a chance of the offender getting off, but a slam dunk the jury will side with him. Imagine going to law school, and then spinelessness gained in that process, to end up at $140,000 a year human stain, thinking that a case like my friend’s will be lost because, a, the video of him suffocating her proved he was drunker than a skunk (impaired) and, b, that she at first told the cops that hour of the event she wasn’t sure if she was having throat and neck pain, breathing impairment.

This is how spinelessness rolls, and the system is clogged, broken, full of milquetoast shits, middlings, dangerous in their spinelessness; and here we are — even if you hit and pound someone into death, the defense can work wonders on the impairment defense, and no manslaughter charges will stick.

You get the picture, no, in this misogynistic, misanthropic, patriarchal shit storm, where the women in the tweed skirts and pants suits are just slithering men in disguise.

After all, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) arrests almost 225,000 offenders for family violence, which refers to an act of physical harm or threat of harm against a member of the family or household. A breakdown of this figure reveals that:

• Almost 95% of all arrests are for assault, with simple assault being the most common.
• Sex offenses represent 3.4% of all domestic violence cases.
• Almost 2,500 people are charged with kidnapping or abduction.

Therefore, you might assume that the vast majority of these individuals will face serious penalties in a domestic violence case. It might come as a shock to learn that many do not result in the worst-case scenario that you expect. A dismissal, acquittal, or another favorable outcome may be possible with help from a Galveston domestic violence defense attorney. In addition, a summary of the relevant legal concepts is useful.

Standard of Proof for Dismissals

In a criminal case, including domestic assault, the prosecutor must prove the highest burden of proof in the practice of law: Proof of guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Any question or uncertainty in the mind of the jurors requires a verdict of not guilty. Keep in mind that the government is required to establish each element of the domestic assault offense in accordance with this standard. The prosecution may face challenges with:

• Proving state of mind, since your actions only constitute domestic violence if you acted intentionally, knowingly, and or recklessly.
• The victim’s state of mind as it pertains to what contact could reasonably be deemed offensive.
• Evidence showing that the victim’s injuries were serious.
• Proving two or more cases of domestic violence in the past 12 months, which is necessary to pursue charges for continuous domestic assault.

If the prosecutor does not have sufficient evidence to meet the burden of proof, the domestic violence charges should be dismissed. Galveston domestic violence defense attorneys can often get them dropped through a motion to dismiss before trial, but you will also get a chance to fight the allegations at trial. Technically, this strategy does not involve a dismissal of the case, but rather an acquittal, i.e., finding of not guilty.

How Domestic Violence Cases Get Dismissed

There are many different defenses and strategies that could lead to a dismissal or acquittal, so keep in mind the following:

• In a criminal domestic assault case, the government is the plaintiff, and the alleged offender is the defendant. The victim is not a party but acts as a witness. If the alleged victim does not cooperate, there may not be sufficient evidence for the prosecution to meet its burden.
• If the accuser has a history of pressing charges based upon false allegations of domestic violence, the prosecutor may elect to dismiss the charges.
• When a judge has entered a protective order related to domestic violence, the respondent will be required to avoid contact and communication with the alleged victim, among other conditions. However, if the victim engages in acts that put the respondent in violation of the order, the allegations of criminal domestic assault are weakened.
• Emotions can run high during a domestic altercation, so the victim may also be to blame for how the incident escalated. In such a case, he or she may claim the right against self-incrimination under the Fifth Amendment. The prosecutor cannot rely on the victim’s testimony, so the charges may be dismissed for lack of evidence.

This is the Biden-Trump-Obama-Clinton-Bush way, really, and a country that sends depleted uranium to rain hell onto civilians and cluster bombs to rain hell on civilians, it gives a flying shit about we the people.

“He was punching me while I had her in my hands,” said Reese. “I ran out the front door, called the police. They took pictures and everything.”

To Reese, the 2015 incident now seems like a missed opportunity to hold Crawford accountable. After that attack, prosecutors charged Crawford with domestic violence in Cleveland Municipal Court.

Our team analyzed domestic violence cases in Cleveland adjudicated between January 1, 2016 and Dec. 30, 2018 in Cleveland.

We found 60% of domestic violence cases were dismissed.

Even more troubling, we found the percentage and total number of dismissed cases has continued to climb over the three-year time period we reviewed.

In 2016, 54% of cases were dismissed. Just two years later, in 2018, 66% of cases were dismissed.

When asked why many domestic violence cases are dismissed, Adrine replied, “It’s a witch’s brew.”

Some accused abusers threaten their victims, he said. Others sweet-talk them.

Adrine said victims’ also fear financial hardships, separating children from their fathers, and for their safety, if an abuser is convicted.

Attorneys filed a court motion Wednesday that aims to halt the long-running practice of overloading public defenders with more clients than they say they can ethically and legally handle. They say excessive caseloads violate the right to effective legal counsel the Constitution grants any person charged with a crime.

Shannon Wilson, director for the Public Defender of Marion County, has asked in the motion for Marion County Circuit Court to withdraw public defenders from certain cases, to stop appointing the nonprofit defense firm’s lawyers to new cases and to dismiss the remaining charges for anyone left without court-appointed counsel.

Every time one of Wilson’s attorneys gets a new case, “they are compelled to violate their ethical duties by expending their limited resources on one client at the expense of another, with neither client receiving the resources and time necessary for a proper constitutional defense,” the motion states. “The time has come for the legal community to work together to stop these ethical and constitutional violations.”

For public defenders to take this step underscores the impotency of Oregon’s efforts thus far to shore up its indigent defense system.

The motion, which would almost certainly disrupt the flow of cases through the courts, appears designed to get quickly before the Oregon Supreme Court. National public defense experts say a ruling in favor of the public defenders in Marion County could force the state’s entire court system to ensure poor defendants finally receive legal representation that abides by the Oregon Constitution.

As recently as 2019, Oregon was operating a system deemed unconstitutional because it pitted the interests of lawyers representing many of the state’s poor and most vulnerable against their clients by encouraging attorneys to take as many cases as possible.

Now, the problems are even more acute.

For the last 15 months, Oregon’s public defense system has failed to provide attorneys for hundreds of people charged with a crime, including people in custody. This week, more than 700 people were awaiting counsel, including approximately 80 in custody, according to state court data. Most of the people in custody without attorneys are in Multnomah, Klamath and Washington counties and have been charged with felonies. Goes back to ancient Greece? Oh, Plato:

The Republic examines the meaning of justice, looks at different types of government, and outlines the ideal state. It touches on many subjects, including law and tyranny.

Plato looked at four existing forms of government and found them unstable. The best, in his view, is timocracy, a military state, like Sparta, based on honor. But such a state will fall apart:

The accumulation of gold in the treasury of private individuals is the ruin of timocracy; they invent illegal modes of expenditure; for what do they or their wives care about the law? . . . . And then one, seeing another grow rich, seeks to rival him, and thus the great mass of the citizens become lovers of money. . . . And so at last, instead of loving contention and glory, men become lovers of trade and money; they honor and look up to the rich man, and make a ruler of him, and dishonor the poor man.

An oligarchy, the rule of a few (the rich), leads to

a city of the rich and a city of the poor, dwelling together, and always plotting against one another. . . . [The government] will not be able to wage war, because of the necessity of either arming and employing the multitude, and fearing them more than the enemy, or else, if they do not make use of them, of finding themselves on the field of battle . . . And to this must be added their reluctance to contribute money, because they are lovers of money.

The poor will overthrow the oligarchy and set up a democracy, the rule of the people (the poor). Plato thought that democratic “life has neither law nor order.” An unquenchable desire for limitless liberty causes disorder, because the citizens begin to

chafe impatiently at the least touch of authority and at length, . . . they cease to care even for the laws, written or unwritten; they will have no one over them.

Stressing moderation, Plato warned that “the excessive increase of anything often causes a reaction in the opposite direction,” such that the “excess of liberty, whether in states or individuals, seems only to pass into excess of slavery.”

Like an oligarchy, a democracy pits the poor against the rich. The poor see the rich plotting, and they seek protection:

The people have always some champion whom they set over them and nurse into greatness. . . . This and no other is the root from which a tyrant springs; when he first appears above ground he is a protector. . . . having a mob entirely at his disposal, he is not restrained from shedding the blood of kinsmen; . . . he brings them into court and murders them . . . at the same time hinting at the abolition of debts and partition of lands. . . . After a while he is driven out, but comes back, in spite of his enemies, a tyrant full grown.

Plato deemed tyranny the “fourth and worst disorder of a state.” Tyrants lack “the very faculty that is the instrument of judgment”—reason. The tyrannical man is enslaved because the best part of him (reason) is enslaved, and likewise, the tyrannical state is enslaved, because it too lacks reason and order.

In The Politics, Aristotle rejected Plato’s ideal state. He said that it fails to address conflicts that will arise among its citizens. He claimed Plato’s ideal state will

contain two states in one, each hostile to the other . . . . [Plato] makes the guardians [the warriors] into a mere occupying garrison, while the husbandmen and artisans and the rest are the real citizens. But if so, the suits and quarrels and all the evils which Socrates affirms to exist in other states, will exist equally among them. He says indeed that, having so good an education, the citizens will not need many laws, . . . but then he confines his education to the guardians.

Unlike The Republic, The Politics does not depict an ideal system of government. Instead, Aristotle explored practical constitutions that city-states can realistically put into effect. His aim was to “consider, not only what form of government is best, but also what is possible and what is easily attainable.”

He studied the different governments in Greece’s many city-states. He identified six different kinds of constitutions, and he classified them as either “true” or “defective.” He stated that

governments which have a regard to the common interest are constituted in accordance with strict principles of justice, and are therefore true forms; but those which regard only the interest of the rulers are all defective and perverted forms, for they are despotic . . . .

“True” constitutions served the common interests of all citizens. “Despotic” constitutions served only the selfish interests of a certain person or group. The chart below shows the “despotic” and “true” constitutions. (Despotic is a synonym for “tyrannic.”)

Tyranny perverts monarchy, because it “has in view the interest of the monarch only.” To Aristotle, tyranny is the

arbitrary power of an individual . . . responsible to no one, [which] governs . . . with a view to its own advantage, not to that of its subjects, and therefore against their will.

Aristotle wrote, “No freeman, if he can escape from it, will endure such a government.”

Aristotle believed that tyranny is the “very reverse of a constitution.” He explained that

where the laws have no authority, there is no constitution. The law ought to be supreme over all.

Aristotle stressed that these laws must uphold just principles, such that “true forms of government will of necessity have just laws, and perverted forms of government will have unjust laws.”

Aristotle held views similar to Plato’s about the dangers of democracy and oligarchy. He feared that both pitted the rich against the poor. But he recognized that these types of governments took many forms. The worst were those without the rule of law. In democracies without law, demagogues (leaders appealing to emotions) took over.

For in democracies where the laws are not supreme, demagogues spring up. . . . [T]his sort of democracy . . . [is] what tyranny is to other forms of monarchy. The spirit of both is the same, and they alike exercise a despotic rule over the better citizens. The decrees of the [demagogues] correspond to the edicts of the tyrant . . . . Such a democracy is fairly open to the objection that it is not a constitution at all; for where the laws have no authority, there is no constitution. The law ought to be supreme over all . . . .

Aristotle made the same argument about oligarchies.

When . . . the rulers have great wealth and numerous friends, this sort of family despotism approaches a monarchy; individuals rule and not the law. This is the fourth sort of oligarchy, and is analogous to the last sort of democracy.

Aristotle stated that “the rule of law . . . is preferable to that of any individual.” This is because individuals possess flaws and could tailor government to their own individual interests, whereas the rule of law is objective.

[H]e who bids the law rule may be deemed to bid God and Reason alone rule, but he who bids man rule adds an element of the beast; for desire is a wild beast, and passion perverts the minds of rulers, even when they are the best of men. The law is reason unaffected by desire.

Rulers must be “the servants of the laws,” because “law is order, and good law is good order.”

In addition to law, Aristotle believed a large middle class would protect against the excesses of oligarchy and democracy:

[T]he best political community is formed by citizens of the middle class, and that those states are likely to be well-administered in which the middle class is large, and stronger if possible than both the other classes . . . ; for the addition of the middle class turns the scale, and prevents either of the extremes from being dominant.

Of course, intimate partner violence is HUGE in terms of pervasive, big time. Making the allusion to the collective citizen battered syndrome is of course just a thought experiment not to take anything away from the epidemic of mostly women being torn mentally, spiritual, physically by their partners or spouses: Psychologist Lenore Walker, EdD, coined the term in her groundbreaking 1979 book, The Battered Woman.

“Battered woman’s syndrome is the psychological effects of living with intimate partner violence,” Walker says. She notes that battered woman’s syndrome is not a mental illness, but the result of what happens when you live day in and day out with trauma. However, PTSD, which people with battered woman syndrome often also have, is considered to be a mental illness.

The physical, sexual, and psychological abuse happens in cycles, Walker says. The tension builds, then there is an outburst of violence, followed by the abuser apologizing and promising to do better. And then the cycle starts all over again.

Battered woman syndrome also involves “coercive control,” in which the partner needs to know where she is at all times, cuts her off from friends and family, and retains financial control so she doesn’t have the money to leave. Partners may not only threaten to kill the woman and her children, other relatives, or pets if she leaves, but also threaten to kill themselves.

Afghanistan sinks deeper into crisis as sanctions take heavy toll on civilians

‘Sanctions: A Wrecking Ball in a Global Economy’

Sanctions cannot be posed as an alternative to war. They are in fact the most brutal form of warfare, deliberately targeting the most defenseless civilians — the young, the elderly, sick and disabled people. Most sanctions are intentionally hidden; they don’t generate even a line of news. Some sanctions are quickly brought into law after a sudden news article about an alleged atrocity. The civilians who suffer have nothing to do with whatever crime the corporate media use as an excuse. Never mentioned are the economic or political concessions the U.S. government or corporations are demanding. In a period of human history when hunger and disease are scientifically solvable, depriving hundreds of millions from getting basic necessities is a crime against humanity.

This is collective punishment — battering en mass — to those hundreds of millions of people natives to those 39 countries.

The U.S. employs broad economic sanctions with increasing frequency despite their poor record of success and the growing body of evidence that they cause significant harm to the populations of the countries where they are imposed. 

The direct costs of sanctions to the U.S. are often negligible, but their effect on the well-being and health of the nations that suffer under them can be quite severe and ultimately deadly for the weakest and most vulnerable members of society. Some of the most recent uses of broad U.S. sanctions in Iran, Venezuela, and Syria show how policies of economic warfare have predictably worsened economic conditions and intensified humanitarian crises without achieving any stated policy goals. 

Bottom line: broad sanctions add more needless suffering to the world, and our government must break its addiction to their use.

The peoples of these targeted countries are being subjected to collective punishment for the actions of their authoritarian governments, and perversely the economic war tightens the grip of these governments and further entrenches the leadership in power. The limited efficacy of sanctions has been understood for a long time, but policymakers need to have a deeper appreciation for the perverse and destructive effects that economic warfare has. (source)

Here, from Walker, but think of these symptoms for us, the body politic:

Intrusive memories: Women with BWS often re-experience past traumatic events in their mind, feeling as if they are happening over and over again, Walker says.

Anxiety: Women with BWS have high levels of anxiety and hypervigilance when something doesn’t seem right, Walker says. This leads to the fight-or-flight response.

Avoidance: When a person can’t physically get out of a situation, they might psychologically become distanced from what is going on by going into denial, or minimizing what is happening to them and numbing their emotions, Walker says.

Cognitive changes: “When you feel that you have to protect yourself at all times, you can experience confusion and a lack of attention,” Walker says.

Elliot Abrams oversaw death squads in Central America and was convicted of lying to Congress. So why did President Joe Biden appoint this evil war criminal to the U.S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy?

So with leeches, err, leaders like War Criminal Kissinger or Abrams, the state of the mind, our abused suckers’ mind, has gotten so dramatically bad that we are in the Stockholm Syndrome, collectively, or at least a good 50 percent of us are t-boned into chaotic thinking, just like that woman in the corner, eyes beat to a puffy blue, scratches and bruises all over, hoping the abuser comes to his senses and flip-flops back to that charming prince.

CAPITALISM IS THE ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP WE CAN’T LEAVE

It’s no wonder that domestic violence survivors like myself stay so long in relationships that are toxic. The entire culture we are surrounded by and what we have to do to merely survive is both pervasive and normalized. And I’m not talking about patriarchy or white supremacy, though of course, these aspects of our culture fit the bill as well.

I’m talking about capitalism.

The more I process my own history of abusive relationships and walk the path of healing, the less I have allowed anyone to control my life or treat me as subhuman. This shift in my own thinking has made me realize that this mindset is incompatible with being a willing participant in capitalism.

If a partner told you that you can’t eat lunch today, how to spend your free time when you’re not with them, which doctor you’re allowed to see (if you even have that luxury), if you’re allowed to attend a funeral, or if you can visit family, everyone would be on the “leave them” train. It’s preposterous that one person could have so much control over another and we instinctually know this. Yet no one thinks twice when this is people’s lived experiences with their employers. In fact, some employers get to dictate what you do AFTER you leave them via entirely legal non-compete contracts. Look at what when a hospital sued to keep their radiology team from leaving. It’s ludicrous, but we’ve been conditioned to accept it without considering how it would be illegal and immoral in any other application.

It’s much more insidious than you expect. Abusive relationships change our psychology, self-image, and perceptions of reality. “Studies show emotional abuse may be the most damaging form of maltreatment causing adverse developmental consequences equivalent to, or more severe than, those of other forms of abuse.” You can believe in your own worth but when partners cut you down a thousand times over: calling you stupid, lazy, selfish, the list goes on. Eventually you begin to believe this or at least wonder if it might be true. I know this was true for me in my experiences.

Gaslighting has become part of our popular consciousness, but part of healing from emotional abuse is how initially after the relationship, we don’t trust our reality. We can’t trust our own judgment because for years we’ve been made to question it. The process to come back to your body and feel safe again is arduous, but because of our culture, this healing is disrupted by the very culture we live in.

Capitalism does this in a way that’s socially acceptable. When we’re exploited, our culture normalizes this and even sees it as a badge of honor. Working late is a virtue. You begin to question your worth and what is considered acceptable treatment. As a nurse, I was paired to work with a physician who had a history of screaming at her nurses and in one occasion, even throwing something at them. I told them that as a survivor with PTSD, being screamed at is a trigger and if I were to have a flashback, the consequences could be dire. I was still paired with this person though thankfully no incidents happened. But the management had no way of knowing that.

Partners don’t come out of the gate being verbally and psychologically abusive. They sell you on an illusion, a person that doesn’t exist. But all of your perceptions validate this illusion. The fake person in front of you is your reality. Even when there’s a red flag, they have a reasonable explanation and you can minimize it when they show all of their other good qualities.

Once you’ve bought the convincing illusion, the abuser has just begun. They continue the charade and ensure you’re invested enough emotionally and financially before they push on your boundaries. At first, it’s subtle. When you push back, they back off or shift the blame. They do nice things and be that false person again long enough that you drop your guard. The pattern continues until you’ve normalized their unacceptable behavior to yourself.

In healthcare, my very first day on orientation as a nursing assistant I answered a call bell and fetched a cup of water for a patient. When I came back, his pants were down and he was masturbating. The whole thing was fabricated so he could assault me. After I ran out of the room, I was told that this was “Just something he did.” Not only was I not warned, but their very tone was of nonchalance. Nonconsensual sexual contact should never be considered part of a job. The facility normalized what was unacceptable behavior and in many ways it groomed me in other parts of my life.

To further their agenda, abusers work on destroying your self-worth piece-by-painstaking-piece. Think of the fake award of perfect attendance in school, where we’re expected to sacrifice our physical and mental health for a system to reward. In school, bullies are not held accountable. I was bullied through 5th-8th grades and often was suspended when I fought back. Asserting your own worth, even when young, upsets the status quo. Advertising is predicated on trying to tell you what you lack and all of the things you should aspire to. Just like on an interpersonal level, capitalism’s breaking down our self worth is often subtle that it does our damage without our conscious awareness.

People who are in abusive relationships are not weak. They’re strong, empathetic, and resilient because in their journeys that’s what they needed to do to survive. But in this process, folks in this situation no longer have the same perceptions of reality that folks on the “outside” do. This is by the abuser’s design. And often, you don’t know how bad it really was until you’re out of it and can see how much you tolerated and rationalized.

Before we ever start a job, the toxic culture of capitalism has already made most of us internalize the belief that our worth is determined by our output and external accomplishments. This happens in school and by our parents, either directly or by observing their own experiences with capitalism and poverty. Homework normalizes that “your job” is allowed to claim your free time. Dress codes enforce a patriarchal double standard and police femme bodies.

Even in high school, if you experience burnout or struggle with all of the things you’re told you need to do, the explanation given is that’s just how it is and you have to push through it. This is the response to overwork throughout our lives, and we’re set up for it early. Our schools, families, and the overarching culture do all of the heavy lifting before we enter the world of work.

Job interviews are another example. I think we all know how much bullshit they are. They’re not good at figuring out who’s right for the job or for preparing the applicant for what their actual job will be like. No one’s getting what they want out of the situation, and yet we still continue the practice. You’re being told what you want to hear, like a first date, when the reality is far different. As applicants, we do it too, but even potential employers are already displaying the uneven power dynamic that we accept for the means to eke out a living in this system. 

Companies have denied people from positions they’re qualified for due to classist reasons like their credit, and, of course, any amount of enforcing your own boundaries around work is an instant disqualifier. You often need to demonstrate a willingness to make sacrifices on behalf of a company you don’t even work for yet. There’s no room for self-expression, individuality, or your own fresh ideas in my former industry of nursing, everyone is invested so heavily in the status quo that it bullies and demoralizes anyone who would challenge it. You learn very early that you’re a cog in a dispassionate machine that thrives on chaos, and coworkers vent their frustrations on each other instead of the system that creates friction and burnout in the first place. 

None of these demands of our time and energy even contribute to productivity or revenue for the organizations that espouse these policies. Working at home, which includes having more control over our working hours and environment improves performance, fewer working hours made us more productive, and even benefits such as on-site childcare impact the bottom line by reducing turnover and absences. But, it’s never about that. Your employment is about your control and about demanding all of your mental energy. Abusive partners require control over all else, and any time you lodge a complaint, they wear you down until you give in. If you’re exhausted all of the time, you can’t resist. And in the case of capitalism, you’ve been given no other alternatives other than pushing through exhaustion and burnout.

In each of my toxic relationships, walking away from a fight was the trigger for violence. They have to control the argument and it ends when they say so. The worst thing (for them) is for you to disengage. They can’t keep up the elaborate lies, and the last thing they want is for you to come to the realization that you deserve better. They don’t want you to find the end of your tolerance for mistreatment. 

So, what is this new form of fascism, uh?

I want to emphasize that I view my main construction, “inverted totalitarianims,” as tentative, hypothetical, although I am convinced that certain tendencies in our society point in a direction away from selfgovernment, the rule of law, egalitarianism, and thoughtful public discussion, and toward what I have called “managed democracy,” the smiley face of inverted totalitarianism.

For the moment Superpower is in retreat and inverted totalitarianism exists as a set of strong tendencies rather than as a fully realized actuality. The direction of these tendencies urges that we ask ourselves— and only democracy justifies using “we”—what inverted totalitarianism exacts from democracy and whether we want to exchange our birthrights for its mess of pottage. Ahh, Monroe Doctrine updated for the rest of the world, Africa:

“What is the path that we are going to chart towards socialism?” This is the question that animated the first day of the ‘Dilemmas of Humanity: Pan African Dialogues to Build Socialism’ conference, which is being held in South Africa between July 17 to 20.

The conference has been divided into commissions, each with a mandate to deliberate upon a particular theme and draft a concrete plan of action which will be adopted in the form of a resolution on the final day. The commissions on July 17 addressed the themes of food sovereignty and agroecology, gender struggles against patriarchy, and urban struggles for housing.

Bringing together nearly 40 progressive peoples’ movements and organizations from across Africa, the four-day event is underpinned by a consensus — “that capitalism has no solutions for the problems that confront humanity.”

Not only is capitalism fundamentally incapable of addressing the crises that confronts the majority of the world today, it has become increasingly violent as its failures have become clear. In this context, the conference is being held in South Africa provides evidence of this.

Addressing the opening ceremony on July 17, the president and founding member of South Africa’s socialist militant shack dwellers’ movement, Abahlali baseMjondolo, S’bu Zikode, said,

“We did not know that when we insist on our humanity, we would find ourselves at war. A war that is fought with live bullets, rubber bullets, tear gas, courts, prisons, lies, and slander.”

May there be a plague upon all of those houses of whore capitalists, the USA, the citizens who fetishize their incompetence, their lust and greed, who wanna be a millionaire, who see only how they feel, and the stupidiest one with mighty big stick wins this game, or at least a winnder for the day, or nanosecond, as the rest of the world advances, even in their poverty and sickness, the rest of the world, at $4 a day for each adult, even they have more pride, more openness, more inquiry, more internal satisfaction than those in the Golden Billion . . . .

The population of Europe is projected at almost 748 million or 747,747,396 people. Europe is the third-most continent continent behind Asia and Africa. Thirty-nine percent of the European population lives in Eastern Europe, 26 percent in Western Europe, 20 percent in Southern Europe, and 14 percent in Northern Europe. Europe accounts for 9.59 percent of the world population. Its global share has been declining since 21.66% of 1950 and is projected to decline at 5.79% by 2100. North America is home to around 597 million (7.58%). Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Call it, drum roll, the five core countries of the Anglosphere: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. These countries are klans, with cultural and diplomatic links with one another and are aligned under military and security programs.

Now, that Golden Billion includes those in the Anglosphere and outside in some cases (the elite in societies, far and wide, from Sheikdoms, to dictatorships, and their inside circles and familia grandes, all those thugs, think of them, in the upper upper classes, or big time middle upper classes, and you have a billion people on earth — less than one-seventh of the global population — holding guns and usury and predation and hellfire and chemical fogs, all the sanctions and loans and impossible austerity programs, the payoffs, all the outright theft, the coups, the soft and hard takeovers, all of that mess, and more, GUN to our heads, that is, for around 6.5 billion of us, who have been put into their vice, their grip, their dirty deals eating our unborn alive as soon as they become a zigot. Imagine, that, no, the golden billion, from oligarchs to punks like Heinz 57, from those two-income MD families, all those few and far between investing in guns, pharma, junk bonds, real estate, finance, all of that, those fucking people who make money on retirement funds, on mortgages, on evictions, on repossessions, on prison and poison, they are part of the Golden Billion, and those armies with big sticks, all of that, it is for their continuance.

     Attached are a couple of articles I wrote about putting radioactive dangers into perspective.  I traveled all the way from NYC to Church Rock, NM and Monument Valley, AZ with a Rad-Alert detector, and then found that the highest readings came from our Catholic Worker soup kitchen here in Manhattan.  We unknowingly were using bright orange dinner plates made with depleted uranium.

     When I turned 40 in 1991 I had spent about 10 percent of my life behind bars, opposed to everything I could think of, and obsessed with learning the truth about the US Army’s Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey.

       As you well know a huge number of Vietnam veterans (those who did not die in the war or come home and commit suicide) were arrested and incarcerated, and basically only had each other to do the psychological processing of what happened to them.  So also attached is the huge transcript of the 1971 hearings in Detroit at which the truth-telling process began.  And I recommend Howard J. Olsen’s book “Wounded Warriors, Chosen Lives,” and his dedication to helping vets recover their humanity.

      When it comes to uncovering the difficult truth about depleted uranium weapons, I recommend  “The Secret of the Three Bullets, A New Generation of Micro-Nuclear Weapons is on the Battle Field,” by Maurizio Torrealta & Emilio Del Giudice.  An obscure book by two Italian researchers, full of the most disturbing speculations and questions.  Imagine if everything you have ever read about depleted uranium is a twisted tissue of lies and deceptions.  Imagine that the original research, that began half a century ago (at Picatinny among other places), is still continuing, so that the structure of these quasi-nuclear weapons and the strategy of how they work, has evolved, and each evolution of the weaponry gets covered by a new layer of public lies.  Where do you draw the line between a “mini-nuke,” a five-kiloton weapon, and an advanced DU penetrator that causes a quasi-nuclear explosion and generates a host of dangerous isotopes?

      Unfortunately I’m not always able to follow the technical descriptions that Torrealta and Del Giudice offer, and have no idea why they wrote this book as a fictionalized story.  The 2001 New York Times articles by Marlise Simons about the possibility of DU weapons containing other isotopes were clipped out and mailed to me at Northern Neck Regional in Virginia, and the prison held the clippings, giving me a yellow receipt for “unauthorized mail” each time.  (In contrast, Justice Ginsburg’s Supreme Court dissent in which she said Al Gore actually won the election of 2000, was allowed in to the jail and made for very interesting cellblock reading.)

      I hope you will get a copy of this extraordinary work (available on Kindle or paper) and see the terrifying connections they draw through war after war during our lifetimes.  Lots of people believe the military-industrial complex is completely out of control, but these researchers were not content with such an empty generality and tried to explore it all detail by detail, and weapon by weapon.  Wherever radioactive materials were found at bomb sites throughout the Middle East, and wherever victims appeared in hospitals with impossible-to-explain wounds, Torrealta and Del Diudice went to investigate.  Outside Basrah they found seismic evidence that an actual 5-kiloton nuclear weapon was used in February of 1991, for which the DU story was offered as a coverup.  It’s beyond belief.  Dr. Tom Fasy who studied the consequences of DU use in Iraq examined our DU dinner plates, and he agrees that 32,000 counts per minute is too high to be solely U-238.

More than 219,000 global technology-sector employees have been laid off since the start of 2023, according to data compiled by the website Layoffs.fyi.

A massive swarm of grasshoppers has invaded Tooele, Utah, causing significant damage to crops. The plague-like surge was captured by weather radar systems of the National Weather Service on the evening of June 21 as it headed northeast toward the Great Salt Lake.

Alex DeSmet, a meteorologist, told the Salt Lake Tribune that the unusual radar detection of the grasshoppers was associated with their distinctive non-uniform movement. Unlike weather events such as rain or snow, grasshopper swarms exhibit irregular patterns.

Last week, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned that 52 countries had no way to reduce their debt burden and were approaching default. Promoting a UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) report on the growing problem of debt, Guterres said that 3.3 billion people lived in countries that were spending more on interest payments than on health or education.

“This is more than a systemic risk – it’s a systemic failure,” Guterres said last Wednesday.

A State Department spokesperson denied the story, claiming that “Secretary Kerry lives on Martha’s Vineyard, he did not travel there for a party. He took a ferry to Martha’s Vineyard, he did not fly commercial or private.” This statement means nothing. No one is accusing Kerry of flying his plane onto a runway at Obama’s compound. Whatever the case, Kerry’s carbon-spewing private jet is busy. He and his family often fly to Sun Valley (where the family has a house), D.C. (ditto), Los Angeles, and sometimes just between Martha’s Vineyard and Boston (another house) — because the Earth isn’t worth the two-and-a-half-hour drive. You can rent a similar plane for around $15,500 per hour.

Kraft Heinz is a company in crisis. It spent the first half of 2019 embroiled in an accounting scandal. Its CEO resigned. And its sales are in a massive slump as people search for healthier, less-processed foods.

The company finally reported its heavily delayed results for the first half of the year Thursday. The numbers did little to calm investors’ nerves.

Kraft Heinz said sales in the first half of 2019 fell nearly 5% from a year ago and profit was down more than half. Although earnings topped forecasts, revenue did not.

And the company disclosed that it was writing down the value of more of its poorly performing brands, including $474 million in charges tied to Velveeta, Maxwell House, Miracle Whip and three other brands. It also took a $744 million charge after lowering sales forecasts for several of its international businesses.

The stock plunged 15% in early trading to a new all-time low and it was the worst performer in the S&P 500. Shares of the company have lost nearly 40% this year.

Kraft Heinz’s (KHC) new CEO Miguel Patricio, who joined the company in July, was not pleased with the first-half results.

“The level of decline we experienced in the first half of this year is nothing we should find acceptable moving forward,” Patricio said in a statement. “We have significant work ahead of us to set our strategic priorities and change the trajectory of our business.”

Kraft Heinz had delayed its financial reports because of an internal investigation of its accounting practices as a result of a probe by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The company stunned Wall Street in February when it posted a massive loss because of a $15 billion writedown of its Kraft and Oscar Mayer brands, slashed its dividend by more than a third and disclosed an SEC probe into its accounting.

Kraft Heinz wrapped up an internal investigation in June, but the SEC review is ongoing.

The accounting woes and poor sales are two major reasons why Kraft Heinz one of the worst performers in the S&P 500. Its poor performance is also hurting Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRKB), which is the company’s largest shareholder, with a nearly 27% stake.

Private equity firm 3G, which partnered with Berkshire Hathaway to first buy Heinz and then merge it with Kraft, is the second-largest shareholder of the company and essentially runs it.

Kraft Heinz is in trouble. How bad could it get?

Following the awful results earlier this year, Kraft Heinz CEO Bernardo Hees stepped down and was replaced by Patricio, a long-time executive at Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD), another company controlled by 3G.

Kraft Heinz faces a more existential challenge beyond its accounting woes: How can it thrive at a time when many consumers are shunning heavily processed foods in favor of more natural and organic food?

Analysts have argued that the company has been too busy cutting costs and dealing with the accounting issues and has not focused enough on launching innovative new products.

Patricio addressed this criticism during the conference call.

“It’s hard to continue cutting costs. You need to change the strategy,” he said. “We need to become more consumer obsessed so we can better predict their behavior even before they know it.”

The success of plant-based food company Beyond Meat (BYND) since its initial public offering and all the buzz about privately held Beyond rival Impossible Foods, which has partnered with Burger King on an Impossible Whopper, shows how behind Kraft Heinz is.

Patricio even noted that although the company was among the first to launch a veggie burger — Kraft Heinz owns the Boca Burger brand — it now finds itself “far behind” other companies in the plant-based food segment.

“We must understand the future so we can lead, not follow. We must understand the consumer better than any other company,” he said.

Other food companies have also been more aggressive with purchases of smaller, innovative rivals and Kraft Heinz needs to catch up to the competition.

General Mills (GIS) bought organic mac and cheese maker Annie’s in 2014. Hershey (HSY) acquired SkinnyPop maker Amplify Snack Brands in 2017 and also bought the maker of Pirate’s Booty from B&G Foods last year. And ConAgra (CAG)scooped up Pinnacle, owner of Smart Balance and the Udi’s brand of gluten free food last year.

Three solar flares observed yesterday by the Fedorov Institute of Applied Geophysics in Moscow lasted up to 14 minutes, signalling abnormally large geomagnetic disturbances on Earth.

The institute predicted the arrival of X-class flares today – the most energetic type of solar radiation, capable of damaging electronics.

Earlier this month, a giant sunspot named AR3354 grew to a size roughly 10 times larger than Earth, unleashing an X-class flare aimed directly at Earth that triggered radio blackouts in some parts of the US.

When Israel expelled hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their villages and homes in 1948, many left with little more than the clothes on their back. Food was left on the stove. Crops were left unharvested. But the land emptied of its inhabitants was soon occupied by new residents.

From 1948 to 1953, almost all new Jewish settlements were established on refugees’ property. The myth of making the desert bloom is belied by the facts: in mid-1949, two-thirds of all land sowed with grain in Israel was Palestinian land. In 1951, “abandoned” land accounted for nearly 95 per cent of all Israel’s olive groves and almost 10,000 acres of vineyards.

During these early years, many Palestinian refugees attempted to return to their lands. By 1956, as many as 5,000 so-called “infiltrators” had been killed by Israeli armed forces, the vast majority of them looking to return home, recover possessions, or search for loved ones. Palestinian women and children who crossed the frontier to gather crops were murdered.

Discussed in the Torah in three locations, the mitzvah known as pidyon petter chamor applies to the firstborn male issue of a Jewish-owned donkey, which retains a level of holiness and is therefore forbidden to be used for work. The redemption is designed to transfer the holiness to another animal, such as a cow, goat or sheep, so that the donkey can be used for work. The other animal used in the transfer is then given to a Kohen, or member of the Jewish priestly class, who typically eats it.

Joe, her grandfather, also pretends his granddaughter doesn’t exist, as though he were Grover Cleveland in the 19th century. (Even old Grover didn’t get away with unpersoning his illegitimate baby.)

Last week, The New York Times broke the liberal media’s silence on the story, shocking Democrats. Among the yucky details: Hunter went to court to block the little girl from using her father’s surname, Biden. This is serious stuff. Parental abandonment increases the odds that Navy will suffer from health problems, addiction and suicidal ideation as an adult.

While dating his brother’s widow in 2017, Hunter briefly shacked up with Washington D.C.-area stripper Roberts, who was then operating under the stage name “Dallas.”

Roberts become pregnant shortly after her encounter with the younger Biden and gave birth to their daughter in August 2018.

In May 2019, Roberts filed a paternity suit against Hunter Biden that was resolved in June of this year. As part of the deal, the younger Biden’s daughter will receive several pieces of art and a reduced monthly child support payment but will not get to take the Biden family name.

“Calls AI a ‘Criminal Enterprise’: They’ll ‘Scan Extras, Own Their Likeness Forever and Eliminate Them’”

As the SAG-AFTRA strike begins, John Cusack took to his Twitter account to slam studio greed. The actor shared a story about starring in “Say Anything,” Cameron Crowe’s classic 1989 teen romance about a mediocre high school student who falls for the class valedictorian after their graduation. According to Cusack, he received no percentage of the film’s box office gross and was then told by the studio that the movie lost $44 million. The actor remains dubious about the claim.

“The greed is almost a legendary comic trope,” Cusack wrote. “One fun fact – when I was a youngin- I did a film (with a boom box) and somehow I got points – net not gross. Never expected to see any money – but the film became quite famous – so about 10 years ago – I looked again at the financial statements they were obligated to report – and to my shock – they claimed they had LOST 44 million dollars on the film.”

“I thought wow, I almost bankrupted Fox! (not really),” Cusack added. “The film cost about 13 million to make – and money spent to release was minimal at the time – 30 years in – that film lost millions every year ! A neat accounting trick don’t ya think?”

SAG-AFTRA members are joining the Writers Guild of America in striking for fair compensation, making it a “double strike,” which hasn’t happened in Hollywood since 1960. The WGA has been on strike since May 2. SAG-AFTRA picketing officially begins July 14. Fair compensation and streaming residuals are some of the big topics in the strike, as is the rise of artificial intellgience.

“Studios wanna have extras work one day, scan them – own their likeness forever – and eliminate them from the business,” Cusack wrote about how the studios want to use AI to get rid of certain acting jobs. “Do you think they will stop with extras ? That’s what AI is – a giant Copyright identity theft.”

Cusack went on to say the studios are running a “criminal enterprise” and will claim in 10 years they had no idea background actors would be eliminated by AI. He posted his thoughts on Twitter while sharing the now viral video of SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher railing against the studios while the strike was being announced.

“We are the victims here. We are being victimized by a very greedy entity,” Drescher said about SAG-AFTRA. “I cannot believe it, quite frankly: How far apart we are on so many things. How [the studios] plead poverty, that they’re losing money left and right when giving hundreds of millions of dollars to their CEOs. It is disgusting. Shame on them.”

‘Under no circumstances’: John Kerry rules out U.S. paying climate reparations to low-income countries

In a June 10 Tweet, Elon Musk, the embodiment of the electric vehicle (EV) revolution, declared that “ESG is the devil”.

ESG stands for the “environmental, social and governance” principles which dictate that certain aspects of a company’s work must be taken into account when deciding whether to invest in it. An investment-worthy company must have a good score on things like climate change, sustainability, energy efficiency, diversity, equity and inclusion, as well as corruption and bribery prevention, among others.

Musk’s outburst was sparked by the shockingly low ESG scores assigned to Tesla by S&P Global, a ratings and market intelligence heavyweight. Tesla earned 37 points (out of a possible 100, where anything above 70 is considered “good” and anything below 50 is deemed “poor”) on its ESG scorecard while Philip Morris, the global tobacco giant, received a commendable score of 84. Similarly, as the Washington Free Beacon discovered, the London Stock Exchange gave British American Tobacco a score of 94.

But again, this son of a bitch is all in for capitalism running amok, capitalism gathering up the 92 percent of profits, power, politics and money. It is low hanging fruit to go after Greta or the anarchists, really, so easy to valorize the billionaires and the Fortune 10,000 companies that have stolen land, luxuries, language, and life from us, the 80 percent. Not one of these companies is in it — skin in the game — to help humanity and really draw down this unsustainable destructive story of stuff, this dirty game of predatory capitalism, throwaway consumerism, this insane buy buy buy bullshit that is the soul of capitalism. Their Eichmann’s are experts at getting people to psychologically depend upon shit and size and volume and usage that are killing the world.

We have let the rabid hyenas out of the bag, man, all the way back to the usury experts, the bandits of bodies and minds and souls, this sickness of fuedalism and inverted totalitarianism. Yes, there should be ZERO billionaires. Yes, there should be feet to the fire, i.e. deep learning about embedded energy, cradle to cradle planning, lifetime analysis of products, and durable goods, durable buildings, and durable social safety nets. That, my friends, will never be through the criminal enterprises of Vanguard or BlackRock, et al. This guy can call the thieves and murderers Big Capital, but it is a Mafia, a rip-off scheme, an economies of scale predicated on thievry and repo logic.

While Big Capital dials down its social justice commitments, much of the emerging world will be stuck with ESG-dictated policy commitments and grant allocations that will rapidly lose relevance in a VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity) world. The Southeast Asia region, arguably sans Vietnam and Myanmar, may likely be the biggest losers in the global ESG sweepstakes. 

The ESG agenda may have started off with good intentions but like similar initiatives, it has been thoroughly hijacked by vested interests. Leaders and “technocrats” in much of the emerging world were likely swooned by the promises of a bold new ESG-fueled global economy. According to one estimate compiled by Bloomberg in 2021, global “ESG assets are on track to exceed $53 trillion by 2025, representing more than a third of the $140.5 trillion in projected total assets under management”.

Those mammoth assets, where they exist, may be appropriated to rebuild smouldering Western cities after this decade is over. But then, who knows? $53 trillion can also be channelled to create a digitised global medical gulag for our “collective safety”. ESG scores for corporations may be replaced by social credit scores for every individual. In that case, the previous 30 months may have served as a trial run…

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius stressed, “By doing this, we’re making a significant contribution to strengthening Ukraine’s staying power.” However, the pantomime playing out may have multiple motives. 

Fundamentally, Germany’s motivation is traceable to the crushing defeat by the Red Army and has little to do with Ukraine as such. The Ukraine crisis has provided the context for accelerating Germany’s militarisation. Meanwhile, revanchist feelings are rearing their head and there is a “bipartisan consensus” between Germany’s leading centrist parties — CDU, SPD and Green Party — in this regard. 

In an interview in the weekend, the CDU’s leading foreign and defence expert Roderich Kiesewetter (an ex-colonel who headed the Association of Reservists of the Bundeswehr from 2011 to 2016) suggested that if conditions warrant in the Ukraine situation,  Nato should consider to “cut off Kaliningrad from the Russian supply lines. We see how Putin reacts when he is under pressure.” Berlin is still smarting under the surrender of the ancient Prussian city of Königsberg in April 1945. 

Stalin ordered 1.5 million Soviet troops supported by several thousand tanks and aircraft to attack the crack Nazi Panzer divisions deeply entrenched in Königsberg. The capture of the heavily fortified stronghold of  Königsberg by the Soviet army was celebrated in Moscow with an artillery salvo by 324 cannons firing 24 shells each.  

Evidently, Kiesewetter’s remarks show that nothing is forgotten or forgiven in Berlin even after 8  decades. Thus, Germany is the Biden Administration’s closest ally in the war against Russia. The German government has stated its understanding for the Biden administration’s controversial decision to supply Ukraine with cluster ammunition. The government spokesman commented in Berlin, “We are certain that our US friends did not make their decision lightly, to deliver this sort of munition.” 

These people — Nazis, Nazi sympathizers, collaborators, et al, should have been snuffed out, man, and they are in UK, in Canada, and USA:

We are looking at a term, temporal disintegration.

During and immediately after a traumatic event, individuals may perceive time as slowing down or stopping, focusing only on the present moment with little awareness of the past and future. This distortion of time, called temporal disintegration, can isolate people in a stressful moment and disrupt the linear flow of time that weaves our life story together, affecting personal identity.

Temporal disintegration has been linked to long-term psychological adjustment following exposure to disasters. It can make individuals fixated on past negative events, leading to diminished well-being and increased distress over time. However, there is a lack of information about how trauma-related distortions in perceived time may be associated with our perceptions of the future, creating a gap in understanding the lasting impacts of temporal disintegration. So, the temporal disintegration is applied to an event, say, Virginia Tech shooting and the lockdown and media coverage. But as I press time and time again here, the collective trauma, the massive media murder 101 constant bombardment without compelling voices discussing how to solve these issues NOW; the endless reports about collapse, about ecosystems on the edge of destruction; documentaries and news reports on the opioid or fentynal crises, or the lack of affordable housing crises, or any number of the top 100 or 1,000 collapse-breakdown-apocalypic topics, we are in that whiplash — spiritual, intellectual and ethical whiplash.

We are in a constant breaking and entering crime scene, all of us, victims of the capitalists, assault victims of the AI-VR-AR Mafia, psychologically morphed from all the war drumming and war making, mutated physical health and minds from all the Parasetic Things that Make Capitalism Deadly, and we’re almost vegetative morally from all the constant dead or zombie-like or violent-tinged shit in our day.

To measure temporal disintegration related to the shooting event, participants were asked to what extent they experienced specific reactions during the lockdown. These reactions included feeling as though time had stopped, nothing was real, they were in slow motion, they had no future, they were unsure about time or day, and they had difficulty remembering events.

Fuck, it gets deep, man, if you are really engaged with the culture, listening to the background noise, exposing yourself to the unimaginable criminality of the media propping up these stories without any sense of judging this human stain for what he is — undeserving, narcissistic, insane, crummy, uninteresting, and one of the big time TAKERS of the world.

An estimated 5 million children died before their fifth birthday and another 2.1 million children and youth aged between 5–24 years lost their lives in 2021, according to the latest estimates released by the United Nations Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN IGME).

In a separate report also released today, the group found that 1.9 million babies were stillborn during the same period. Tragically, many of these deaths could have been prevented with equitable access and high-quality maternal, newborn, adolescent and child health care.

“Every day, far too many parents are facing the trauma of losing their children, sometimes even before their first breath,” said Vidhya Ganesh, UNICEF Director of the Division of Data Analytics, Planning and Monitoring. “Such widespread, preventable tragedy should never be accepted as inevitable. Progress is possible with stronger political will and targeted investment in equitable access to primary health care for every woman and child.”

Ahh, two million dollars a year (I am sure it is more than that — since he has a series of homes, transportation vehicles, lifestyle enhancers, trips, etc) to extend his cells, his age? Fucking $3.65 a day? Or, $6.85 a day? The global medium income is $7.60 a day? You not pissed off yet?

In 2019, many more people lived in poverty at these higher poverty lines than at the extreme poverty line. Almost a quarter of the global population, 23 percent, lived below the US$3.65 poverty line, and almost half, 47 percent, lived below the US$6.85 poverty line, as reported in the 2022 Poverty and Shared Prosperity report. This also means that the global median income (US$7.60 per person per day) is very close to the UMIC line. These absolute poverty lines represent a basic floor in economic wellbeing for LICs and MICs. The fact that half of the global population is still poor under any of these definitions is of great concern for poverty reduction efforts over the coming decade. (source)

I was getting to know a new PCP, primary care physician, yesterday. I was told it was unusual I’d get to talk to Dr. V, that he was so booked up, and under Medicare, well, you know that game. My old DO up in Lincoln City is about to retire. So many retirements, young and old.

The guy I got is another DO, who did grow up in Spokane (I did my time there) and did Army MD residency, and now, his Vietnamese America wife is a doctor, and they met in California, Pomona, at med school, Western University of Health Sciences.

According to Dr. V, this hospital system he has been in has shifted from patient centered to profit centered. He’s seen his wage go down 40 percent, doubled his panels (caseload) and pushes less and less time with us, the patient, and more time putting in data into the machine.

The entire system is broken, but made to break.

Here, “It feels so unjust that we, as largely immigrant doctors serving this working class immigrant community in Queens, have to beg to get what we need to pay our rent, and from a corporation like Mount Sinai that touts its commitment to New York communities,” Dr. Tanathun Kajornsakchai said in a statement last week.

About 63% of the population in the hospital’s neighborhood was born outside of the United States, according to government data included in a 2018 municipal report.

Dr. Irfa Khan said doctors don’t want to strike but have no choice if Mount Sinai won’t negotiate in good faith. The hospital has said it has been working in “good faith” and accused the union of being “inflexible.”

“We were here when Mount Sinai needed us, where is Mount Sinai when the Elmhurst doctors and community needs them?” Khan said in the union’s statement.

Khan told CNN affiliate WCBS at the picket line Monday that doctors work at both Elmhurst and Mount Sinai hospitals but are paid less.

Two firms dominate the ER staffing industry: TeamHealth, bought by private equity firm Blackstone in 2016, and Envision Healthcare, bought by KKR in 2018. Tenet, one of the nation’s largest health care systems, has expanded its reach in part by marketing its willingness to keep the Catholic rules in place. “Tenet was an early for-profit health care system that moved to acquire Catholic hospitals, and it basically established that it was willing to comply with Catholic doctrine following the purchase of these hospitals,” Elizabeth Sepper, professor at the University of Texas Austin School of Law, said. “It was a tool that Tenet used to break into markets and to acquire Catholic hospitals that were up for sale that otherwise probably would have gone to a Catholic health care system or another nonprofit.” 

Sepper coined the term “zombie hospitals” to describe the creations resulting from these mergers. Such hospitals have little to no remaining connection to a church but are bound to follow religious restrictions on health care, sometimes through agreements attached to the land itself that purport to prohibit forever the use of the property for sterilization, abortion, or aid-in-dying. When the private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management announced it would acquire the six-hospital Caritas Christi Health Care system in Boston in 2010, The Wall Street Journal quipped, “Catholic nuns, meet your new owners: A three-headed dog from hell.” The sale, Sepper notes, included a $25 million penalty if the archbishop determined that the for-profit owners were not upholding the Church’s principles.

The business climate, he suggested, is ideal for companies looking to reinvent their business models.

Federal regulators said Tuesday they found that Bank of America harmed customers by double-dipping on fees, withholding credit card rewards and opening fake accounts, all of which are violations of various consumer financial protection laws.

As a result, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau ordered Bank of America (BAC) to pay more than $100 million to customers and $90 million in penalties. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency also ordered Bank of America (BAC) to pay $60 million in fines.

The bank is the second largest in the United States, serving 68 million individuals and small businesses.

Some of the charges are reminiscent of the Wells Fargo scandal last decade that involved opening millions of bank accounts without customer authorization.

Even the smaller fry are getting in on the action, with venture capitalists giving a combined $750,000 to a company pledging to implement a planetary solar geoengineering project using SO2. For several centuries subjects have donned the garb of citizens, and monarchies have preferred to call themselves republics.

The Right to Plunder

In the year 2003, a veteran Iraqi journalist named Samir visited several museums in Europe.

He found marvelous texts in Babylonian, heroes and gods sculpted in the hills of Nineveh, winged lions that had flown in Assyria…

Someone approached him, offered to help: “Shall I call a doctor?”

Squatting, Samir buried his face in his hands and swallowed his tears.

He mumbled, “No, please. I’m all right.”

Later on, he explained: “It hurts to see how much they have stolen and to know how much they will steal.”

Two months later, U.S. troops launched their invasion. The National Museum in Baghdad was sacked. One hundred seventy thousand works were reported lost.

Stories Tell the Tale

I wrote Soccer in Sun and Shadow to convert the pagans. I wanted to help fans of reading lose their fear of soccer, and fans of soccer lose their fear of books. I never imagined anything else.

But according to Víctor Quintana, a congressman in Mexico, the book saved his life. In the middle of 1997, he was kidnapped by professional assassins, hired to punish him for exposing dirty deals.

That was when Víctor, more dead than alive, put in his two cents. He began telling stories from my book, trading minutes of life for every story from those pages, the way Scheherazade traded a story for every one of her thousand-and-one nights.

Hours and stories slowly unfolded.

At last the murderers left him, tied up and trampled, but alive.

They said, “You’re a good guy,” and they took their bullets elsewhere.

Quite a few years ago now, during my time in exile on the coast of Catalonia, I got an encouraging nudge from a girl eight or nine years old, who, unless I’m remembering wrong, was named Soledad.
