U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Kenya’s Defense Minister Aden Duale signed the accord at a meeting in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, but eagled-eyed social media users spotted a major blunder.
Images from the video of his speech suggest Ukrainian media edited the footage to make it appear that the audience was larger than it really was.
In fact, Zelensky can be seen sitting in the audience where he had been during the remarks made by US President Joe Biden earlier that day.

It’s when saying something is a “pandemic” is just not good enough. And, when you want to be able to target multiple policies/media/persons at the same time.
Reports are already cropping up where this made-up word, “infodemic,” is used as if it means something. No quotes around it, either – and there’s talk about “managing” the situation, the way “global policymakers” -i.e., the WHO treaty negotiators – now see it.
Opponents will say that the UN agency has simply decided to play on the element of intimidation and fear here, by featuring the phrase front-and-center in its recent initiatives.
The most prominent one at this time, of course, is the WHO’s pandemic treaty/accord. It calls for pretty much everybody – to “take action.”
Without ever really going into explaining exactly what the previous pandemic was, how it was handled (justly or not so), whence it originated, and why – the UN’s WHO (World Health Organization) is now “preparing for the next one.” Yet this is not a board game – billions of people’s well-being and livelihoods are supposed to depend on it, going forward.
But now, let’s take the threat of “infodemic” at face value, as those peddling the word would no doubt want us to.
It is this: primarily, a call to rally governments, researchers, media organizations, and tech platforms to take “stronger” action against “the new phenomenon.”
But what is it? “Too much information, including false or misleading information in digital and physical environments during a disease outbreak.”
Say what? Thus far the target was arbitrarily designated “misinformation” – but now “too much information” is also a problem? What does – and in what world – “too much information” even mean? (Reclaim the Net)
Now, this is one Anal Story: Like similar legends such as The Promiscuous Rock Star, this tale has been applied to various public figures who are known or believed to be homosexual, and it has stuck with one in particular: Richard Gere. Although the legend homed in on various targets when it first appeared (including a Philadelphia newscaster), it has clung tenaciously to Mr. Gere’s name since at least the mid-1980s. Rumors that he had an emergency “gerbilectomy” at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in California have spread far and wide, and countless doctors and nurses claim to have participated in, been on hand during, or heard from a reliable colleague about, the procedure. (Cedars-Sinai is apparently the best-staffed hospital in the world, since literally thousands of different doctors and nurses claim to have been on duty at the time Mr. Gere was allegedly brought in for treatment.)

Despite his frequent claims of peace, the Dalai Lama knew much more about the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)’s support of Tibetan secessionists in the 1950s and 1960s than he admitted, Germany’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper reported recently.
A report titled “Seemingly Sacred,” which shed light on the relationship between the Dalai Lama and the CIA, said a shadow of violence falls on the divine king.
The report said an emissary of the Dalai Lama first contacted the US through its embassy in New Delhi and consulate in Calcutta in 1951, and both sides discussed US military and financial aid to Tibetan separatists. One of the Dalai Lama’s elder brothers also attended the meetings.
In the same year the US Defense Department gave the Dalai Lama a letter, in which “light weapons” and “financial aid” were promised to the Tibetan separatist movement, it said.
The Dalai Lama also received 180,000 US dollars a year from the CIA, which was described as “monetary aid for the Dalai Lama” in confidential documents.
The report said the CIA launched “St. Circus Operation” in 1956, which trained Tibetan guerrillas on a South-Pacific island to kill, shoot, lay mines and make bombs.
The CIA also made air drops that provided the guerrillas with machine weapons, ammunition, medicine, and propaganda materials, among others, it said.
According to the newspaper, “The Dalai Lama clearly stood closer to the CIA and knew significantly more than he let on.”
Though the Dalai Lama had always claimed that he only came to know the operations afterwards, it should be no later than 1958 when he was aware of the paramilitary training given by the CIA that was closely linked to poison, killing and other violent acts, it said.
The report said a US movie director, Lisa Cathey, had conducted more than 30 interviews in her shooting of a documentary, CIA in Tibet.
One of those interviewed was a retired CIA agent named John Kenneth Knaus, who was in charge of CIA operations in Tibet and had preserved documents that recorded the training.
The Dalai Lama had met with Knaus twice, once in 1964 and again in the 1990s.
The Dalai Lama apparently hasn’t been honest on whether he knew the CIA’s support to the Tibetan separation, the paper said. Now that with more truth on the Dalai Lama’s relationship with the CIA revealed, a shadow of violence falls on the divine king, it added.
The report called the Dalai Lama “a chess piece of the CIA during the Cold War” and his direct CIA connection does not match his “supreme moral authority.”
One interview that Valentine said made him nauseous was one he conducted with Thomas G. Clines, a CIA adviser to Vang Pao, who bragged about overseeing Phoenix-style operations in Cuba where anti-Castro commandos trained by the CIA used blowtorches to burn the faces off Communist mayors and cadres in rural Cuban villages.

Similarly, German industrialists were legitimately targeted by the Allies.

Russian Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Defence Troops chief Igor Kirillov issued a fresh briefing on Friday, providing new information on US military biological activities in Ukraine, as well as details on what his troops know about monkeypox, a smallpox cousin which has caused a global health scare in recent weeks.
The Pentagon, he said, introduced a mandatory smallpox vaccination back in 2003, with US diplomats and medical personnel also required to be jabbed against the infectious disease.
“This indicates that the United States considers the smallpox pathogen a priority pathogenic agent for combat use, and ongoing vaccination measures are aimed at protecting their own military contingents”, Kirillov said.

On September 22, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is continuing his campaign to shore up Western support amidst his military’s flagging counteroffensive, to address the Canadian parliament.
In attendance and seated in the House of Commons visitors’ gallery was a 98-year old Nazi war veteran named Yaroslav Hunka.
Parliamentarians across party lines, including Trudeau, treated Hunka as a guest of honour. House Speaker Anthony Rota introduced Hunka as a “hero” and a “veteran from the Second World War” who had “fought… against the Russians.” Rota then said that the House of Commons “thank[s] him for all his service” in the fight against Russians during the Second World War. Neither Rota nor anybody present thought to mention the obvious: that those fighting Russia during the war were almost exclusively Nazis.
In elections since 1991, it has been common to create fictitious populist parties that can ‘catch a wave’ and score surprise election results. This was the case in 2021 with the ‘Servant of the People’ party created by Volodymyr Zelensky and his cohorts. He and his ‘party’ swept the 2021 elections to the presidency and to the legislature (Rada). They did so by flirting with Russian-speaking voters as well as other voters opposed to, or uneasy with, the anti-Russia policies brought to the fore in Ukraine by the 2014 coup. They promised socially oriented policies and probes towards peace with Russia, but once in power immediately changed course to impose neoliberal policies, urge more NATO military intervention directed against Russia, and continue promoting right-wing, Ukrainian nationalism.
The actual absence of real democracy in post-Soviet Ukraine was always quietly approved by the Western countries. They have long simply slapped the label ‘democratic’ on the most dictatorial of regimes so long as they submit to a status of ‘ally’, that is underling, of the United States and NATO.
Ward Churchill talked about his book Kill the Indian, Save the Man: The Genocidal Impact of American Indian Residential Schools, published by City Lights Publishers. The author talked about the history of government-created American Indian residential schools and argued that these schools had genocidal aims. Professor Churchill said that while the term “genocide” is widely understood to refer only to the mass killing of an ethnic group, the U.N. Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide defines it in broader terms, which apply to the policies of the U.S. government towards Native American children throughout much of the 20th Century. He described the treatment that these children received and discussed the impact of these schools on Native American society today. There were 2.5 million Ukrainian displaced persons, or DP’s, at the end of the war in Germany and in Austria. Most were forced labourers who had been tricked or press ganged by the Nazis, becoming slave labor back in Germany, where a system of apartheid was set up to keep them segregated from the Germans. Of these, 1,850,000 returned to the Soviet Union from 1945-1947. During the Cold War it was claimed that they were all sent off to gulags in Siberia. In reality most returned to their homes. This left only 200,000 Ukrainians in Germany and 50,000 in Austria. Over 120,000 of them had retreated with the Nazi armies when they left Ukraine and were Nazi collaborators, OUN members, and escaped war criminals. They lived in huge displaced persons camps and the OUN/B quickly gained control of them with the backing of the British and the Americans. In the camps the OUN/B recreated their old front groups, youth groups, scouting groups that had been used to indoctrinate the Bandera generation and would now be used to help the OUN/B and OUN/M ideologies to survive their decades in exile.
In 1948 the British quietly ordered a halt to all war crimes trials and investigations and began importing thousands of fascist émigrés. That same year the U.S. Congress passed the Displaced Persons Act which, along with the later Refugee Relief Act, allowed over 500,000 refugees from Eastern Europe to enter the U.S. Many were innocent victims of the war, but others were fascist collaborators that the U.S. felt would be useful during the Cold War. Tens of thousands of OUN members, UPA vets, and Ukrainian SS veterans were brought into the U.S., Britain, Australia and Canada. The CIA also pushed through a secret agreement called the 100 Persons Act which allowed the CIA to bring in 100 people and their families every year and give them citizenship regardless of whatever crimes they had committed in the past that would bar their entry. It was a deal between the CIA, the Justice Department and the INS allowing the CIA to bring in 100 notorious Nazi war criminals every year “In the interests of National Security.” This was used to shield the worst of the worst, like Mykola Lebed and Pavlo Shandruk. the former leader of the Waffen SS division “Galizia”. In my [Hugo Turner] research this year I read nearly everything I could find that was relevant to the OUN even though much of it dealt with the time periods I covered in Parts one and two.
The definitive book on the OUN remains “Stepan Bandera: The Life and Afterlife of a Ukrainian Nationalist, Fascism, Genocide, and Cult” by Grzegorz Rossolinski-Liebe. A huge highly detailed book that begins in the 19th century and ends in 2014.
Another must-read is “Blowback: America’s Recruitment of Nazis and Its Effects on the Cold War” by Christopher Simpson. All three of Simpson’s books are must-reads.
“MI6: Inside the Covert World of Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Service” by Stephen Dorril is a great book with valuable information on MI6 backing the OUN/B, the ABN, the Promethean League, and the Intermarium among many other topics.
The final chapter of “Hitler’s Shadow: Nazis War Criminals, U.S. Intelligence, and the Cold War” by Richard Breitman and Norman J.W. Goda is an in depth article on the CIA career of Mykola Lebed although it is to some extent a “limited hangout.”
“Ukrainian Nationalism” by John A. Armstrong was considered the definitive book on the OUN for many decades. It completely whitewashes the history of the OUN omitting mention of their war crimes and convinced generations of scholars to call them “Integral Nationalists” instead of fascists. He wrote it for the CIA backed Russia Institute at Columbia University and interviewed hundreds of German and Ukrainian war criminals. Armstrong used code names for them in his notes to protect them. In the 90’s Armstrong bragged that the OUN leaders were his personal heroes. Still it may be worth reading if you are truly obsessed as it provides a great deal of info on the OUN/M.
“Ukrainian Nationalism in the Age of Extremes: An Intellectual Biography of Dmytro Dontsov” by Trevor Erlacher provides an in depth study of Dontsov the thinker that inspired Stepan Bandera and the OUN/B. The author bends over backwards to avoid calling the OUN fascists but the book is still pretty damning. It is a product of the sinister Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute.
The UPA war is covered in detail in “The Soviet Counterinsurgency in the Western Borderlands” By Alexander Statiev. Unfortunately it dismisses the involvement of Western intelligence and is also highly critical of the Soviet Union containing many horrifying scenes from the Soviet dirty war. On the other hand it debunks many anti-Soviet myths.
“Old Nazis, the New Right and the Republican Party” by Russ Bellant is a must-read classic on the Republican party’s long alliance with fascist émigrés. It covers the Ukrainians, The ABN, and the vast network of right wing NGOs in the 1980’s and early 90’s. The Ukraine lobby interlocked closely with the weapons-making lobby. It covers the brief scandal when George H.W. Bush was discovered to have a number of fascist war criminals working on his campaign. The future president made sure to pay homage to the fascist Ukrainian diaspora living in Michigan.
“Inside the League” by Scott Anderson and John Lee Anderson covers the World Anti-Communist League which by the 80’a united Nazi war criminals, The OUN/B, Latin American death squads, Gladio terrorists, the Moonies, the Yakuza, the drug dealing KMT, “respectable” conservative politicians, and American neo-Nazis. It was among the first books to publish a critical account of the OUN/B war crimes.
“Hitler’s Foreign Executioners: Europe’s Dirty Secret” by Christopher Hale is a great book on Himmler and the SS. It reveals that Himmler was a key backer of Ukrainian nationalism. It also provides a study of fascism in many Eastern European countries like Ukraine, Hungary, Romania, Croatia, Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia. These fascist movements would join the Waffen SS and later with the OUN/B join the ABN during the cold war.
“Unholy Trinity: The Vatican the Nazis, and the Swiss Banks” by Mark Aarons and John Loftus covers the story of the ratlines and explains how 8,000 Ukrainian SS Galizia division veterans were sent to Britain after the war.
America’s Nazi Secret by John Loftus is the uncensored new version of his classic Belarus Secret. It focuses mainly on Belarus but also has information on Frank Wisner’s backing of the UPA, the purging of CIA files on fascist émigrés and Mykola Lebed.
“The Old Boys: The American Elite and the Origins of the CIA” by Burton Hersh is a classic covering the early cold war history of American intelligence the OSS, CIA, and OPC Allen Dulles’ business ties to the Nazis and many other topics.

Mayor Eric Adams of New York City, who once said that “Big Brother is protecting you” has unveiled a new policing initiative involving a robotic law enforcement officer. Announced in a press conference on Friday, the NYPD plans to trial a dystopian robotic surveillance platform in the Times Square subway station.
Dubbed the Knightscope K5, this semi-autonomous robot is no lightweight. Weighing in at approximately 400 pounds and capable of moving at a top speed of three miles per hour, the K5 has been described by Adams as “not a pushover.” This was clearly demonstrated during the press conference as the Mayor tried unsuccessfully, multiple times, to knock it over.

Scientific American: On the crisp afternoon of February 12, 2023, two men parked a Winnebago by a field outside Reno, Nev. They lit a portable grill and barbecued a fist-sized mound of yellow powdered sulfur, creating a steady stream of colorless sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas. Rotten-egg fumes permeated the air as they used a shop vac to pump the gas into a balloon about the diameter of a beach umbrella. Then they added enough helium to the balloon to take it aloft, attached a camera and GPS sensor, and released it into the sky. They tracked the balloon for the next several hours as it rose into the stratosphere and drifted far to the southwest, crossing over the Sierra Nevada Mountains before popping and releasing its gaseous contents. The contraption plummeted into a cow pasture near Stockton, Calif.
The balloon released only a few grams of SO2, but the act was a brazen demonstration of something long considered taboo—injecting gases into the stratosphere to try to slow global warming. Once released, SO2 reacts with water vapor to form droplets that become suspended in the air—a type of aerosol—and act as tiny mirrors, reflecting incoming sunlight back to space. Luke Iseman and Andrew Song, founders of solar geoengineering company Make Sunsets, had sold “cooling credits” to companies and individuals; a $10 purchase would fund the release of a gram of SO2, which they said would offset the warming effects of a metric ton of atmospheric carbon dioxide for a year. They had planned a launch in Mexico but switched to the U.S. after the Mexican government forbade them.
Many people recoil at the notion of solar geoengineering, or solar radiation management (SRM), as it’s often called. The idea that humans should try to fix the atmosphere they’ve messed up by messing with it some more seems fraught with peril—an act of Faustian arrogance certain to backfire. But as it becomes clear that humans are unlikely to reduce emissions quickly enough to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius, some scientists say SRM might be less scary than allowing warming to continue unabated. Proposals for cooling the planet are becoming more concrete even as the debate over them grows increasingly rancorous.

Reducing CO2 levels in the atmosphere will take more than cutting emissions—we will also need to capture and store the excessive volumes of already-emitted carbon. In an opinion paper published in the journal Trends in Plant Science on September 21, a team of plant scientists argue that arid lands such as deserts could be one answer to the carbon-capture problem.
The authors argue that we could transform arid ecosystems into efficient carbon-capture systems with improved soil health, enhanced photosynthetic efficiency, and larger root biomass by engineering ideal combinations of plants, soil microbes, and soil type to facilitate a naturally occurring biogeochemical process called the oxalate-carbonate pathway to create below-ground carbon sinks.
“Re-greening deserts by restoration of ecosystem functions, including carbon sequestration, should be the preferential approach,” writes the research team, led by senior author and plant scientist Heribert Hirt of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. “The advantage of reclaiming arid regions for re-greening and carbon sequestration is that they do not compete with lands used in agriculture and food production.” (source)

So let me turn the high beam on one of the main architects of the plan — less in the news than Tim Geithner, but no less important — Larry Summers.
To understand why a man as brilliant and accomplished as Summers can be so wrong about what to do with the banks and Wall Street, it would be useful to turn to “The Innovator’s Dilemma,” by Harvard Business School professor Clayton Christensen.
The book explains how even very successful companies, with very capable personnel, often fail because they tend to stick to the strategies that made them successful in the first place, leaving themselves vulnerable to changing conditions and new realities. So you can have brilliant managers who miss what’s needed for success in the future because they are too tied to the past.
This describes Summers to a T.
He is one of the top economic minds of his generation, a tenured professor at Harvard by the time he was 28, with plenty of real-word experience — ranging from heading the Treasury to heading a major university. But his core beliefs and assumptions helped lay the groundwork for the current crisis.
As treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, Summers played an important role in convincing Congress in 1999 to pass the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, which repealed key portions of the Glass-Steagall Act and allowed commercial banks to get into the mortgage-backed securities and collateralized debt obligations game. The measure also created an oversight disaster, with supervision of banking conglomerates split among a host of different government agencies — agencies that often failed to let each other know what they were doing and what they were uncovering.
At the signing of the bill, Summers hailed it as “a major step forward to the 21st century.”
Summers also backed Phil Gramm’s other financial time bomb, the Commodity Futures Modernization Act, which allowed financial derivatives to be traded without any oversight or regulation. So it was on his watch that the credit-default swaps warhead that has blown up our economy was launched.
Indeed, during a 1998 Senate hearing, Summers testified against the regulation of the derivatives market on the grounds that we could trust Wall Street. “The parties to these kinds of contract,” he said, “are largely sophisticated financial institutions that would appear to be eminently capable of protecting themselves from fraud and counterparty insolvencies and most of which are already subject to basic safety and soundness regulation under existing banking and securities laws.”
It would be hard to make assumptions that turned out to be more wrong than Summers’ were.

Wildfires are thought to be increasing in severity and frequency as a result of climate change1,2,3,4,5. Here, we estimate global daily LFS outdoor fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and surface ozone concentrations at 0.25° × 0.25° resolution during the period 2000–2019 with the help of machine learning and chemical transport models. We found that overall population-weighted average LFS PM2.5 and ozone concentrations were 2.5 µg m−3 (6.1% of all-source PM2.5) and 3.2 µg m−3 (3.6% of all-source ozone), respectively, in 2010–2019, with a slight increase for PM2.5, but not for ozone, compared with 2000–2009. Central Africa, Southeast Asia, South America and Siberia experienced the highest LFS PM2.5 and ozone concentrations. The concentrations of LFS PM2.5 and ozone were about four times higher in low-income countries than in high-income countries. During the period 2010–2019, 2.18 billion people were exposed to at least 1 day of substantial LFS air pollution per year, with each person in the world having, on average, 9.9 days of exposure per year. The Chinese completely ignore sanctions against Khartoum imposed by the West. Chinese oil companies operate in Angola, Nigeria, the Republic of Congo, Algeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Namibia and Ethiopia.
Chinese presence in Africa has many faces and includes the provision of grants and loans; rail and highway construction; construction of power plants, housing construction, shopping malls, schools, and hospitals; arms supplies; tens of thousands of Africans studying in China; regular summits and mutual visits at the highest government level. There are more Chinese restaurants than McDonald’s in Africa. Many African states are celebrating their 50th anniversary of independence these days. The Chinese have invested $100 million in building the African Union’s headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and are completing the construction quickly. The buildings of foreign ministries and parliaments in many African countries came as a gift from China. Roads, bridges and airfields are usually built on credit. In exchange, China gets access to the African riches. The Africans don’t mind, although the negotiations are not always perfectly smooth.
There have been two significant energy-related developments in the last two decades. The first is a demand-side development, the awakening of the two Asian giants – China and India. Both these economies have launched an energy-intensive rapid-growth paradigm, playing ‘catch-up’ in the inexorable global development game. With their combined populations accounting for more than a third of global population and their low per capita energy consumption base, the two economies will pre-empt an increasing share of the dwindling global energy sources, especially hydrocarbons.
Already nearly half of global incremental oil demand comes from just these two countries and this trend can only become more pronounced in the coming years. The other important development on the energy scene, this time on the supply side, is the emergence of new hydrocarbon supply regions – in Russia, Central Asia, Africa and Latin America. Of all these regions, Africa has indeed become the target of predatory acquisitions and unsavoury practices of international extractive enterprises engaged in the extraction of all minerals, of gold, diamonds, oil and timber. Russia, Central Asia and Latin America have, to a large extent, escaped the exploitative reach of global and now Asian multinational corporations scouting around the world for new assets.
Africa with its loose and unstructured investment regime is the prime target of Asian oil and gas companies looking for accretion to their own reserves. India, for instance, has invested in the energy sectors of Sudan, Libya, Egypt and Cote d’Ivoire and is scouting for new assets in other African countries. In Sudan, it partners with Chinese and Malaysian companies, in Libya with a Turkish company, in Cote d’Ivoire with a Chinese company.
The question therefore is: What is it that makes Africa vulnerable? What is the difference in the political, economic and investment environment in Africa and the other three regions? Can Africa learn from the example from the other three regions and adopt their techniques to ensure that its own peoples benefit most from the extraction of minerals from its territory? At the same time, can Africa escape the resource-curse that has plagued and doomed the single-resource economies of the Middle East?
How can Africa use its mineral wealth to build a diversified economy and ensure economic and social development for its peoples who are among the most impoverished and illiterate in the world? Since the relentless quest for new energy sources will make it impossible to stop the exploitation of Africa’s vast unexplored mineral wealth, how can we ensure that such exploitation takes place in an equitable and humane manner?
So, that proxy war in Ukraine, it is a sickness, man, a real sickness of the West, of Israel, of the war machine, the bombs and bullets and balloons and satellites and drones and every goddamned bit and piece of what makes the Blood Merchants Bloody Murderers, in the field or in the boardroom.

The Belt and Road Initiative
This initiative was launched in 2013 as Chinese president Xi Jinping announced the double project of connecting China to Europe by land through Central Asia and thus creating a “Silk Road Economic Belt”, and to develop a maritime communication route between the two continents. It has since then become the main pillar of Chinese economic diplomacy.
The official objective of the BRI is “to promote the economic prosperity of the countries along the new Silk Roads (Belt and Road), to promote regional economic cooperation, to enhance exchanges and mutual understanding among civilizations, and to promote peace and development in the world”. It offers partner countries the possibility to finance and build a wide range of new infrastructure, particularly in the field of communication and transport (roads, railways, ports, airports, pipelines, internet network, etc.) and energy. Today, not only have most Asian countries and many European countries joined the initiative, but also almost the entire African continent and some Latin American countries. In addition to building infrastructure, the BRI has four other components: policy coordination, trade and investment facilitation, financial integration and cross-cultural exchanges.
Through the BRI, China is making clear its power ambitions as a global player and intends to adopt a much more proactive stance on the international stage than before. Beyond supporting the country’s economic growth, giving China’s national currency international stature, and strengthening energy security, it has a strong diplomatic component seen in the development of the Belt and Road International Forum and the signing of cooperation agreement with partner countries. The second forum, in May 2019, focused on the fields of energy and telecommunications. It included the signing of an agreement between the African Union and the Global Energy Internet Development Cooperation Organization, initiated by the China State Grid Corporation, the major state-owned company in charge of managing the electricity grid in China.
Africa in the BRI
Although Africa is not the centrepiece of the BRI, the continent has been attracting special attention from China for at least two decades, well before the BRI was launched. Indeed, Africa offers a range of characteristics that are perfectly in line with China’s economic and strategic objectives as defined in the BRI:
It is a continent rich in raw materials, especially oil and gas, which are essential for the functioning of the Chinese economy.
The infrastructure needs are colossal.
African economies, traditionally extroverted and dependent on the rest of the world (for access to finance as well as to technology and know-how), are particularly welcoming to international investors.
Africa’s population is growing much faster than anywhere else in the world, while a consumerist middle class is beginning to emerge, heralding the eventual development of a huge market.
Political institutions are relatively weak and standards (social, environmental, safety, etc.) are low, which opens the door to low-end products and less conscientious economic players or those with less expertise.
The Relationship Between Economic Decline and Authoritarianism
“Fascism is capitalism in decay,” we have all heard this referenced to Lenin. While it’s important to note that this specific quote may not be verbatim from his writings or speeches, it does capture the essence of Lenin’s views on capitalism and its potential consequences. Lenin believed that as capitalism reached a certain stage of development, it would exhibit characteristics that resembled fascism. This idea suggests that fascism emerges due to the inherent contradictions and crises within capitalism as it reaches an advanced stage.
Fascism arises as a desperate attempt by the ruling capitalist class to maintain its power. It is a form of authoritarianism that emerges when capitalism is in a state of decay, During periods of economic crisis or decline, the ruling capitalist class may face challenges to maintain their dominance. In response, they might turn to authoritarian and nationalist movements as a means to protect their interests and maintain control. Fascism is the extreme manifestation of these efforts. Economic collapse can generate fear and insecurity in society. Fascist leaders often thrive on this fear, offering a sense of order and protection in exchange for loyalty and obedience.
Fascist regimes promote corporatism (a close collaboration between the state and big business) to maintain social order and protect the interests of the capitalist elite. In desperate times, people may be willing to sacrifice democratic principles for perceived stability. This erosion of democratic norms can pave the way for authoritarian rule.
Lenin’s statement suggests that fascism is not a separate or unrelated phenomenon but a product of the contradictions and crises within the capitalist system. Fascist movements often scapegoat minority groups, blaming them for the economic problems. This can lead to the persecution of marginalized communities, further consolidating power for the authoritarian regime. Fascist regimes tend to suppress dissent and opposition forcefully. This can involve censorship, repression of civil liberties, and the use of state power to maintain control over the population.
In history, when the Nazis aimed to establish legal measures to marginalize and discriminate against Jewish citizens, these concepts were not created in a vacuum. They meticulously examined the legal framework of another nation. According to James Q. Whitman, the author of “Hitler’s American Model,” that nation happened to be the United States. Specifically, the Nazis admired the Jim Crow laws for segregating Black Americans from white Americans and debated whether to introduce similar segregation in Germany. However, they concluded that such measures wouldn’t be sufficient in their case.
They were particularly interested in how the United States had designated groups like Native Americans and Filipinos as non-citizens, even if they lived in U.S. territories. This influenced the Nuremberg Laws, which stripped Jewish Germans of their citizenship and classified them as “nationals.” In essence, the Nazis found inspiration in the American system of racial segregation.
Suppressing Dissent: Fascist regimes tend to suppress dissent and opposition forcefully. This can involve censorship, repression of civil liberties, and the use of state power to maintain control over the population.
Propaganda: The use of propaganda is a common feature of fascist regimes. Propaganda can be used to manipulate public opinion, justify authoritarian measures, and create a sense of unity and purpose.

Historical Examples
Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany (1933-1945): Nazi Germany provides a stark historical example of fascism emerging during an economic crisis.
Economic Collapse: The aftermath of World War I and the economic turmoil of the Great Depression created widespread unemployment and suffering in Germany. This economic collapse contributed to the appeal of Hitler’s promise to restore economic stability and greatness.

Economic Populism: Economic grievances and job insecurity have fueled the rise of far-right populism in some regions. Leaders often promise to protect jobs and the interests of the majority, echoing historical appeals to nationalism and economic stability.

According a study dating back to 2010, there were at least three times as many psychopaths in executive or CEO roles than in the overall population. But more recent data found it’s now a much higher figure: 20 percent.
The incidence of psychopathy among CEOs, for instance, is four times higher than the general population, reports journalist Jon Ronson in his book “The Psychopath Test.”
“Basically, when you get them talking, [psychopaths] are different than human beings,” Ronson told Forbes. “They lack things that make you human: empathy, remorse, loving kindness.”

Lawrence Summers, the President Emeritus of Harvard University, met with Jeffrey Epstein more than a dozen times following his 2008 conviction, and solicited Epstein for funds to support his wife’s budding nonprofit, new documents revealed.
Epstein donated millions of dollars to Harvard during Summers’ stint as the Ivy League university’s president from 2001-2006, which came after Summers served as US Treasury Secretary for Bill Clinton and before his tenure as chief economic adviser to President Barack Obama.
Nevertheless, new documents obtained by The Journal revealed that Summers continued to meet with Epstein from 2013-2016, and they had several dinners on the books throughout the four-year period.
A spokeswoman for Summers confirmed that “their interactions primarily focused on global economic issues,” and The Journal reported that Summers never received additional funds — personally or for Harvard — from Epstein following his conviction.
Summers went on to argue that boys outperform girls on high school science and maths scores because of genetic difference. “Research in behavioural genetics is showing that things people previously attributed to socialisation weren’t due to socialisation after all,” he told the Boston Globe yesterday.
As an example, Summers told the conference about giving his daughter two trucks. She treated them like dolls, and named them mummy and daddy trucks, he said.
Summers also played down the impact of sex bias in appointments to academic institutions.
He said: “The real issue is the overall size of the pool, and it’s less clear how much the size of the pool was held down by discrimination.”
At least half of his audience comprised women, several said they found the remarks offensive and one walked out.
“It was really shocking to hear the president of Harvard make statements like that,” said Denice Denton, who is about to become president of the University of California at Santa Cruz.
Others said Summers’s comments were depressingly familiar. “I have heard men make comments like this my entire life and quite honestly if I had listened to them I would never have done anything,” said Donna Nelson, a chemistry professor at the University of Oklahoma. (source)

Preface: According to band member Kate Pierson, “Private Idaho” was inspired by the feeling of being trapped and isolated, like a prisoner in solitary confinement. The song originated when Pierson had a vision of someone disappearing into themselves and being cut off from the world around them.
Note that in Western Capitalism, so so many people are trapped, self-imposed, sure, but mostly dictated by the oppression, the constant celebrity cult fawning, all those elites lording over the masses, i.e. the 80 percent. Think about all the services (social, mutual aid, support, food, schooling, child rearing, aging, disability) that were not there in the first place in this Number One Nation on Earth Shit-Hole, and those that were there as threadbare services designed to clog and fail . . . and you get a picture of how lost we are in this putrid world.
Think about domestic abuse, AKA Battered Wife Syndrome. So, when a bloke like me ground truths with one example of one woman in one county dealing with one abuser and one last straw that precipitated calling 911, the world in an oyster is the world all of you readers will engage with at one point in your life struggling to make ends meet, struggling to understand how Capitalism and Patriarchy and Forced Implosion of Services are orchestrated by some of the most sociopathic and mean “leaders” in “society.”
Stages of Grief, Disempowering the Abuser, Healing
Operator: What’s the nature of your call, ma’am?”
Victim: “I’m … I’m locked out of my house. My, he . . . my husband, he just tried to strangle me . . . suffocate me …”
Operator: “Where are you now? Are you in a safe place?”
Victim: “Oh my god, safe? I don’t know.”
Operator: “Ma’am. Where are you now? In the house with him?”
Victim: “No, no . . . I got away. I’m at a neighbor’s house. He’s locked himself in our house.”
My friend is now almost a year from that frantic call last November. She’s in counseling. She knows the facts, too, rattling them off while she puffs a cigarette:
· “It can take seven attempts before a survivor permanently leaves an abusive partner.”
· “Around 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States.”
· “I’ve read that around 31% of all women will experience domestic violence. Can you believe that?
· “For Black women, that statistic rises to than 40%. It’s insane how much domestic abuse goes on.”
Even after eleven months navigating and meeting with the Lincoln County courts, the victim’s assistance program, a local counselor, and a divorce lawyer, my friend is in many ways right back at the trigger point of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from the moment she got away from a couch pillow and 220-pound man forcing her not to breathe.
It’s not a disorder, PTSD (or BWS), in the traditional sense, but rather an overarching set of fears, habits, thinking processes, self-perceptions and societal norms that rush through any victim’s or survivor’s head. That incident she was surprised to read ended up in the Newport News Times the following Wednesday that chilling November evening.
That was a shock – in black and white. That same week, a grand jury indicted the abuser – the accused – on most of the charges leveled at him by the arresting deputies. A husband and wife – where she ended up fleeing to with her dog – were also called in by the Grand Jury as witnesses, as well as the investigating deputy.
That 911 call and the indictment were not stages one and two. For her, she had been forced for more than four years to leave the house, or even when they were camping together, forced to flee from his very presence because of his heavy abuse of alcohol and constant verbal and financial abuse.
He gave her a concussion two years ago. She lied to the attending medical personal saying, “I fell in a river and hit my head.”
She lived a life of isolation, developing a contrived “everything is okay” attitude, but deep down she feared that he might one day just kill her. Nights were bad when he passed out after consuming huge amounts of beer and booze. Each time she left, he attempted to reel her back, she tells me. And that worked over and over and over. Apologies, big male crocodile tears telling he’ll never do it again, and then this woman’s need to believe she was committed to marriage for the long haul.
She repeats to me – “Can you imagine if we had a child? I understand why victims of domestic abuse who have kids get priority in shelters, for services.”
My Sister’s Place is a Template Needing Replication a Thousand Times
Taking power back is one of the goals of Amber Wishoff-Martin who is the director of My Sister’s Place in Newport. She was in a whirlwind when I first made contact with her.
On her mind was on my friend’s case – Wishoff-Martin asked for the perpetrator’s name and the date my friend contacted My Sister’s Place. But Amber was in the midst of putting together a flyer for an August 15 training in Newport sponsored by Catholic Charities: “Understanding How Immigration Laws Can Help Survivors of Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, Child Sex Abuse, Stalking, & Human Trafficking.”
I broached the issues of overworked DA’s; not always trauma-informed/sensitive victim’s advocates; the nuances of defense attorneys and prosecutors meeting to “horse trade” charges to forgo or forestall a trial based on a reduced set of charges in a plea agreement.
Wishoff-Martin states she wants to be “a voice of compatibility” when looking at the challenges typical of domestic abuse prosecutions. Amber noted the County’s domestic violence diversion court is effective. In the end, though, the shortage of prosecutors and defense attorneys has “a direct impact on survivors.”
We’ll get into the benefits and services of MSP, but one organization I contacted is Portland-based, SCARS – Survivor Collective Alliance, Reach Society. Rachelle Scheele is the principal cofounder SCARS. One of the incredibly impactful aspects of this collective is the Podcasts: Survivors Speak Truth. This is an abuse and trauma survivor-run Podcast. The goal is to “elevate survivor voices and amplify survivor stories.”
Healing takes time, as all the practitioners agree. Some of that roadwork, according to SCARS and social workers, including Heidi H. Heild, thirty years in social work, is drilling down to the truth of abuse. SCARS ramifies healing from trauma through peer support: “self-advocacy, healing, outreach, education, and restorative justice.”
I asked Heidi what goes wrong, usually, in domestic violence court cases. “The lack of advocacy for the victim, revictimization through the court process.”
Her biggest push is creating more services for domestic violence victims/survivors. “Not all DV victims are alike,” Heild says. “Some need only a little help to exit abusive relationships and get on with their lives.; at the other extreme are those deeply traumatized by their experiences and in need of extensive professional help to regain a basic ability to function independently. Clearly, different types and levels of service are needed.”
Just this past February, Amber wrote to the House Committee on Judiciary supporting HB2933, a $10 million increase for funding the Oregon Domestic and Sexual Violence Services (ODSVS). She spoke of the increased need for survivor services.
“Our agency, like others across the state, saw exponential growth in calls to hotlines and requests for safe, emergency shelter and services. In the last year we took over 1,300 calls on our “Hopeline,” a 24-hour crisis hotline for Lincoln County support. This was a massive increase over what we have seen in years past,” she wrote.
She emphasizes that a safe place to sleep at night when fleeing domestic violence is a life saver. In Lincoln County, last year, MSP offered 4,140 bed nights to adult survivors and 1,938 nights to their children. MSP, also known as My Safe Place, has been in Lincoln County attempting to meet the needs of victims and survivors for 42 years.
For my friend, who called MSP a week before the attempted murder, said she hit a brick wall as there was no space for her at the time. She told me she’s not throwing aspersions at MSP, but without a place to stay, she went back to her abuser, and a week later, the 911 call was made. “I went back to the abuser and here I am now ten months later as he just pled out for the attempted murder.”

I see clearly now. I see how you gained control over the years and how you targeted me from day one. By shining so bright – me the independent, multi-lingual, smart business owner — I had what you never had. You saw in me a powerful but vulnerable well intentioned human being, and you took advantage of it as all abusers do. You never treated me as your equal. I was the perfect victim for you.
I didn’t know back then, but I know now that I married a predator. It was truly scary for me when I talked with your ex fiancé, Mary, and realized how your abusive behaviors only escalated with the years. Her life was shattered, and her current life, married with children, still reflects fear for you, of you. The fact that you never did the work on yourself to heal your own traumas or anger management, that is forefront, but for a victim of more then four years of abuse, I find it difficult to empathize with you. You have continued with your hate, your misogyny and your control; you have only gotten worse. You abused Marytoo and probably every woman that ever crossed your path. You’re a serial abuser.
The control you gained on me over the years was very insidious. The cycle of abuse was vicious. From complete isolation & neglect, to long periods of raging and alcohol abuse, to rejection and abandonment, among others, you wore me down and turned me into a victim of Stockholm Synrome. You belittled me and threatened me every chance you had. You made a point to make my life miserable. You pushed me away and reeled me back in whenever you were pleased with fake apologies, crocodile tears and empty promises to change and be better. I believe you are not redeemable.
You wanted a submissive wife at home to cook, to clean and to fall under your terrible will.
You wanted a punching bag for your emotions, and I was it. That facilitated you to show your best behaviors and charming self to other people. It’s not classic Jekyll & Hide behavior, but it sure was close. Nobody really knew what was really happening behind closed doors. A living hell, that’s what it was all along, all day everyday with you. I was constantly walking on eggshells, sleeping on the couch with my purse hidden under my legs and the dog on a leash, always on a fight or flight mode. I would clean vomit and piss all over the bathroom every other day.
You would hide the car keys so I couldn’t go anywhere. You would lock me outside of the house.
You would threaten to hurt the dog if I would to go anywhere.
You would manipulate me and force me into your deviant sexual fantasies so you would have to seek sex from other women.
You would attack my integrity and make fun of my origins, my family, my friends, my accent, my height, my weight. There was always something wrong with me, any ideas I would have or everything I would do. I was criticized, blamed, and brought down every day.
You gaslit me constantly, trying to convince me that what I saw I didn’t see, what I heard I didn’t hear, what I felt I didn’t feel. That was an ongoing narcissitic plan to convince me that my reality was completely false, and that’s a serious abuse tactic & psychological torture method I have learned now while going to counseling. You were grooming me into losing every little bit of self confidence I had so you could abuse me more intensely and keep me isolated.
The way you treated me all along is a statement of who you are as a human being. Nine months in a county jail with no counseling, no group work, no substance abuse programs just makes you more of a danger to society. But not to me.
For the longest time, I tried to understand your relationship with your mother, and I finally got it: You both are the same person, you both are despicable human beings. You can’t stand each other, yet you use each other to get your evil ways. I don’t think you were born an abuser, but that you became one: forged by another one, your father and your rotten mother’s response to a husband’s abuse. The abused that becomes an abuser is classic, but it doesn’t make me feel vindicated. Everything you guys plotted against me over the years and especially since you got incarcerated were really enlightening to me. She enables you all the way and you don’t know any better than being an abuser & addict.
I have now unraveled all of your lies, including the cheating and the nasty campaign you ran amongst friends and family. Rarely mentioning that we were married, keeping me hidden so you could abuse me better, your have lied throughout this relationship, to me and to others. You also targeting vulnerable and low self-esteem women by luring them into your hotel rooms. I’m truly disgusted. By now, your life has no more secrets for me. Maybe you can find some relief in that.
I wanted to be loved.
I wanted to help.
I wanted to make you happy.
I wanted us to be team #1.
Sure, I have cried, screamed and ran away my fair share as I was reacting to this ongoing nightmare. But unlike you, I never intended to hurt, control and manipulate. I helped you through every struggle you had. I was your cheerleader. I followed, encouraged and helped you in all your projects, as crazy as they were. I was by your side every time you experienced alcohol withdrawals, when you were sick or injured. And so on.
I had good intentions; I wanted a lifetime marriage & partner. But you wouldn’t appreciate anything I would do for you. I did a lot for you, for us. I was a good, loving & faithful wife. I am the one that helped you keeping your head above the water. Without me, you would have sunken a long time ago. Remember the person you first met in Antigua, Guatemala? An independent & strong woman, loved and respected by everyone? Well, by the time you got incarcerated, I was barely a shadow of that person, of myself. I had checked out emotionally. I couldn’t bear any of the abuse anymore. I was at my lowest point and this is exactly where you wanted me to be so you could control, lie, manipulate, cheat and abuse me even more. You thought you had me good; I know you never thought I would call the police on you! You’ve mistaken my kindness for weakness.
I jeopardized my life to flee from you and the abuse on many occasions by flying away, driving away, leaving numerous different jobs, turning down opportunities, sleeping in the car, streets, motels, crashing at friends’ homes.
They say that it takes on average 7 times for a victim to flee her abuser for good. That’s about what it took me to stand for myself and call the police. And yes, I did come back to you plenty of times. I genuinely wanted things to work for us and help you. I loved you very much.
But I know now that I never had a real chance to make this marriage work. For you, it wasn’t about love, respect and devotion. It was all about control, manipulation & abuse. You never loved me. I am no longer ashamed I have been shackled by you because I understand the dynamics of battered wife syndrome.
I am no longer a victim.
You used everything I ever shared with you, with honesty and vulnerability, to manipulate me and keep me around. I was so scared of what would happen if I didn’t obey you. You would threaten me into withdrawing yourself from the green card application so I would be deported. You would hide my passport while you were gone on your trips so I wouldn’t escape. You would make me spend every bit of money I would make so you could control me financially. I could go on forever.
Nothing will ever excuse nor explain what happened on the night of November 11th when for the first time in my life I dialed 911. Who the fuck do you think you are to feel that’s it’s okay to assault me and contemplate killing me? You really scared me. As you grabbed me by the throat, locked my arms behind my back, stuffed my face in the couch, forced a pillow over my head and tried to suffocate me, I thought for sure I would die. You tried to kill me, Abusere!
You must have thought that I had to pay for every woman in your life that let you down and disappointed you. Or maybe you sought some kind of vengeance against women, me, with your dad’s murder anniversary coming up. It took me some time to realize it, but I surely was in great danger! There is nothing I could have done for you justify assaulting me. No trauma or addiction of yours could explain or diminish your actions. I thought about that night many times; there was no happy ending possible. I would of end up dead one day soon anyways. You were out of control and more aggressive by the day. And remember when you gave me concussion in Sedona after hitting me on the head? Remember me begging for my life as you were choking me on the bed? Those burdens are now all on you. I am washing my hands of it. I refuse to let any of the abuse you put me through define me anymore.
The person you assaulted that night exists no more. I am in process of regaining all the self confidence you took away from me, taking back control over my life and healing from all the trauma you caused me. Make no mistake, you can’t fool me anymore. Although you’ve shaken me to my core, you didn’t succeed to kill me and I am now growing stronger than ever.
That’s my biggest victory. I am finally seeing you for the monster that you are. I am standing up for myself. Unlike you, I never soought vengeance. By now, I only want you to take accountability and be held legally responsible for what you did to me. I am finding myself much more peaceful knowing exactly who and what I was dealing with. I know you know exactly what you did to me that and how much you’ve abused me over the years and it’s going to haunt and torture your consciousness forever, no matter how drunk you get.
YOU will have to live with those thoughts ever after.The truth is that you are a danger to society. You have put me through some much abuse and you endangered me and my dog, so many times. You are an abuser in the most classic sense; you drive intoxicated; you are a predator; you are a misogynist, a narcissist, a sociopath, racist and a total fraud. What you have put me through, I don’t wish it on anybody. You are an imminent danger to women and young girls.
You have lucked out and received a plea agreement, and I know your think you have won, that you will get something over on the probabtion officials, that you can scam the system, and that you will drink again and even attempt to contact me. You sould have received prison time.
I truly hope you will heal from your own childhood trauma, through anger management and addiction treatment, and that you will at some point be the better human being I always thought you could be, but I strongly doubt any of these will transpire.
You will hurt again and fuck it up again like you always. How was your time in jail? Just over 8 months, right? How miserable were you? That’s nothing compared to what you have put me through and what I have endured because of you. I was in a prison all day everyday living in serious fear. You plead for easier final punishment because you got scared like a little boy. You shit your pants. I was always the bigger person, not you. You can’t even face your own truth and admit your terrible behaviors and mistakes. It hurts too much to face the reality of your life full of regrets, doesn’t it?
Throughout these months, I never contacted you, didn’t contact your family nor your friends. I am commanding you to never ever get in contact with me, nor stalk me in any way, shape or form. Not me, my family, my friends. Don’t even try because I won’t hesitate to defend myself this time around. After everything you put me through, I would hope you would understand and leave me alone forever. I have given enough of my soul to the dark dark motives in your heart and head. Never again.
I’ll end this statement by saying this: For me, you are a spineless worthless piece of shit and there is no redemption for someone like you. Most importantly, you have now become a total stranger to me.

The Black Sea Grain Initiative, signed by Russia and Ukraine in July 2022, was designed to alleviate global food shortages by allowing exports to resume from Ukraine and follow a protected sea transit corridor to the poorest countries in the world.
A recent investigation by the Austrian outlet eXXpress, however, says that didn’t happen. More than half of the Ukrainian wheat and corn exports to the EU ended up feeding pigs in Spain to produce its world-famous jamon.

1 —Medicare for All
Medicare for All has become a top item on progressives’ policy wish list, raising the ire of conservatives and centrists everywhere. But despite the cries from fiscal scolds, Medicare for All is not as much as might you think: the $717 billion military budget is just about $12 billion shy of the sum needed to expand government health insurance to the 200 million US children and adults who currently have private insurance or no insurance at all. Structured the right way, Medicare for All could even reduce overall US health care costs by as much as $2 trillion.
2 —Free College
Free college for all is completely affordable — especially if you have the Pentagon budget at your disposal. The military’s $717 billion could pay full tuition for four years at a public university for 21 million college students — more students than are currently enrolled in all colleges in the country.
3 —Food Assistance
At the same time that the $717 billion military bill wends its way toward Trump’s desk, Congress is debating the merits of cutting $24 billion over ten years from food stamps and related assistance for the poor. Together, the proposed cuts and rule changes could result in 3 million Americans losing food assistance.
Trimming the Pentagon budget by $2.4 billion per year — a reduction of less than half a percent — would make up the difference and keep food stamps and its sister programs intact.
4 —Planned Parenthood
Planned Parenthood received $543 million in government funds in its last reported year. Thanks to lots of resistance, attempts in Congress to defund the organization have so far proven unsuccessful. But now women face a new challenge, named Brett Kavanaugh. Trump’s Supreme Court pick is widely believed to be the vote that could overturn Roe v. Wade, or at least weaken it past recognition. Technically no federal funds are used to pay for abortions (an absurd restriction that should be reversed), but the Pentagon budget could fund services like birth control and gynecological exams at the current funding level until the year 3336.
5 —Reduced Fossil-Fuel Emissions
The only way to slash carbon emissions is by taking aggressive action at the federal level. That will be costly. But fortunately, there’s a bloated Pentagon budget we can draw on.
The military budget could fully fund the $200 billion annual investment needed to reduce US fossil fuel emissions by 40 percent by 2035, according to a 2014 study. That study — the best cost-estimate available for carbon reduction — also estimated that a $200 billion annual investment would create 2.7 million new jobs.
6 —Upgraded Infrastructure
Aside from clean energy, the United States is in desperate need of new infrastructure investment for roads, bridges, public water systems, schools, and more. Millions of Americans drink tap water that isn’t up to public safety standards. The American Society for Civil Engineers gave the United States a D+ for its infrastructure on their most recent report card. Since the United States is $2 trillion shy of the needed funds for repairs over the next ten years, a 28 percent cut to Pentagon funding — from $717 billion to $513 billion, still higher than during the 1990s — would cover the difference.
Again, this is just limited, but the facts are again here, but double the figure:
By the Department of Defense’s own accounting, taxpayers spent $13.34 trillion on the U.S. military from 2000 through fiscal year 2019 in inflation-adjusted 2020 dollars. Add to that another $3.18 trillion for the Veterans Administration, and the yearly average comes to a whopping $826 billion.
The F-35 is just one of the malfunctioning weapons systems on the Pentagon’s current $1.8-trillion shopping list of overpriced aircraft, missiles, ships, satellites and tanks. Other poor performers include the $22-billion Zumwalt destroyer, a warship without a mission; the $30-billion littoral combat ship, which the Navy is already mothballing because it is virtually unusable; and the Air Force’s problem-plagued $43-billion KC-46 refueling tanker, which offers little improvement over current refuelers.
But it is not only exorbitant hardware that picks taxpayer pockets. Pentagon administrative costs are also out of control. A January 2015 report by a federal advisory panel found that the Pentagon could save $125 billion in administrative waste by streamlining its bloated bureaucracy. That sum alone is 15 times more than the $8.3 billion the Trump administration proposes to spend in the next fiscal year to fund the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during one of the worst pandemics in modern history.

Of the 60 million soldiers who fought in the First World War, over 9 million were killed — 14% of the combat troops or 6,000 dead soldiers per day. The armies of the Central Powers mobilised 25 million soldiers and 3.5 million of them died. The Entente Powers deployed 40 million soldiers and lost more than 5 million. The mortality rate ranged between 6% and 30%, with the highest in the armies of Serbia, Montenegro and the Turkish Empire, mainly due to large epidemics of cholera, typhoid and smallpox, against which the armies of other countries vaccinated their troops. Infectious diseases did also spread in other armies, but with a lower mortality rate. In absolute numbers, major battles on all fronts claimed the highest number of casualties, primarily because of the technology of warfare based on explosive artillery shells. The death toll among prisoners of war amounted to between 5 and 10 % of prisoners.

FM 30-31B first surfaced in Europe in the 1970s and was long suspected to be used by U.S. and host countries’ intelligence as operational guidance for violent anti-Communist destabilization, including acts of terrorism.
U.S. intelligence claimed consistently that the document was a sophisticated “Soviet forgery.”

School for Dictators!
Critics have labeled the School of the Americas a “school for dictators.” The ten former Latin American heads of state who attended the School of the Americas include General Manuel Antonio Noriega of Panama, military ruler from 1983 until his ouster from power by U.S. forces in December 1989. In 1992, Noriega was convicted and sentenced in a U.S. Federal court to 40 years in prison on drug trafficking charges, while subsequently he was sentenced in Panama for the 1985 murder of a Panamanian opposition leader and for the October 1989 murder of a Panamanian military officer who led an unsuccessful coup against him. Another Panamanian leader who attended the School of the Americas is General Omar Torrijos who emerged as Panama’s de facto political leader after the National Guard overthrew the elected civilian government of Arnulfo Arias in 1968, and ruled either as official head of government or de facto political leader until his death in a plane crash in 1981. While many observers would label Torrijos a populist leader, others criticize the general for his repression of opposition sectors.
Two additional School alumni who overthrew elected civilian governments are Major General Guillermo Rodriguez (1972-76), who overthrew Ecuadorian President Jose Maria Velasco Ibarra, and Major General Juan Velasco Alvarado (1968-1975), who overthrew Peruvian President Fernando Belaunde Terry. Breaking with the pattern of previous military leaders in these two countries, Rodriguez and Alvarado initiated extensive periods of direct military rule, seven years in Ecuador and twelve years in Peru.
The six remaining Latin American military rulers who attended the School of the Americas consist of two each from Argentina, Bolivia, and Honduras, all of whom succeeded military rulers. In Argentina, Lieutenant General Roberto Viola led a short-lived military government from March to December 1981, but was ousted because of his failure to contain a rapidly deteriorating economy. Public pressure calling for the closure of SOA grew, and when a congressional task force found those responsible for the 1989 UCA massacre were trained at SOA, something had to be done. The House of Representatives narrowly killed a bipartisan bill to shut down SOA, and instead, it was closed in 2000 and reopened in January 2001 as the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC) under the Defense Department, rather than the Military.
United States imperialism is still alive and well, fueling an international reign of terror that has spawned almost a dozen dictators and countless human rights violators. The School of the Americas was never really closed. Instead, it was given a fresh coat of paint, simply rebranding the same education that promotes violence and terror in the Global South.
This education reinforces a cycle of violence in the Americas. It starts with security sector forces, trained by the United States to use torture, extortion, and abductions on populations of the Global South. As a result, asylum-seekers migrate North to escape from violence, often after a family member has already been tortured, arrested, or kidnapped. At the U.S.-Mexico border, caravans of people are denied refuge and detained, deported, or killed.
From either end, it’s the United States terrorizing and killing innocent people.
It’s a bloody system spawning from the U.S. destructive foreign policy in Latin America, ranging from sanctions to outright coups, that seeks to strangle the region with unfettered capitalism and Washington-backed despots.
Since 2019, SOA / WHINSEC has trained over 83,000 Latin American security forces. The school has held “human rights training” as a central pillar since before the 2001 rebranding, and after the change in leadership, the Defense Department doubled down on this focus by offering courses on “human rights.” However, these efforts are meaningless when it has no correlation to graduates respecting the most basic laws of international human rights.

Problems followed. The vehicles arrived improperly outfitted, said Volodymyr Havrylov, an assistant defense minister in Ukraine. Anti-corruption officials began investigating the deal, he said. Mr. Morales sees a bright future in Ukraine. At the penthouse bar last month, conversation turned toward “large contracts that were about to be awarded,” Mr. Van Brunt said. Officials asked whether the company could handle big new deals.

Kushner was a multimillionaire real estate executive and top Democratic donor when he was sentenced in 2005 to two years in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to 18 counts, including tax evasion and making illegal campaign contributions.
Once Kushner discovered his brother-in-law and former business partner was assisting federal authorities in their investigation, he set out for revenge (and, as prosecutors would argue, witness intimidation).
The wealthy New York real estate magnate hired a prostitute to seduce his brother-in-law in a New Jersey motel, arranging to have the encounter recorded with a hidden camera.
Then, he showed the video to his brother-in-law’s wife: Kushner’s sister.
Adding an interesting twist to the saga is that Kushner’s prosecution was overseen by then-U.S. Attorney Chris Christie, who would go on to become a prominent Trump surrogate and the head of his transition team.
Christie’s history with the Kushner family would loom large over his time with the Trump team. In 2016, he was ousted from the campaign, and many blamed Jared Kushner for his firing.Still, Christie has continually defended his decision to prosecute Charles Kushner, even writing a book centered in part on the saga: Let Me Finish: Trump, the Kushners, Bannon, New Jersey, and the Power of In-Your-Face Politics.
“Mr. Kushner pled guilty. He admitted the crimes,” Christie told PBS in a 2019 interview. “And so what am I supposed to do as a prosecutor? I mean, if a guy hires a prostitute to seduce his brother-in-law, and videotapes it, and then sends the videotape to his sister to attempt to intimidate her from testifying before a grand jury, do I really need any more justification than that?”
Christie continued: “I mean, it’s one of the most loathsome, disgusting crimes that I prosecuted. And I was U.S. attorney in New Jersey, so we had some loathsome and disgusting crime going on there.” (sources)

Duda also admitted that although he had planned to meet with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, he had not been able to “for organisational reasons” – delays in the schedule of leaders’ speeches at the UN General Assembly – but he does not rule out that a meeting will take place later.
This is what this sort of fellow — the most corrupt of those countries in “EuroTrashLandia” — does: Ukraine to Sue Poland, Hungary and Slovakia , Over Food Import Bans. In May, EU restrictions allowed Ukraine’s neighbors, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia, “to ban domestic sales of Ukrainian wheat, maize, rapeseed and sunflower seeds,” Reuters reports.
But on Sept. 15, after the European Commission refused to extend its import ban, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia announced Ukrainian grain import restrictions of their own. The countries maintain that the restrictions are intended to protect their economies and farmers, Reuters reports.
On Sept. 18, Ukrainian officials announced that a lawsuit will be filed against Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. Polish politician Radoslaw Fogiel said that if Ukraine does sue, it would “reverberate badly in Poland.
“Our decision is not aimed at Ukraine, it is dictated by the protection of the Polish farmer and the protection of Poland’s interests,” Radoslaw Fogiel, the head of Poland’s parliamentary foreign affairs commission, said via Reuters.

He seems to have missed part of the wording of the new Russian military doctrine, which in fact says that, if Russian territory is attacked – even with a non-nuclear weapon – they retain the right to attack the invader with nuclear weapons!
He also thinks that, if the West continues to send long-range weapons and contracts NATO specialists to provide Ukraine with coordinates and pushes the launch buttons, Putin may eventually get tired of this provocation, and may go on the offensive against a NATO country.

It is a simple moment that stands out most vividly in the memories of Jay Pritzker’s friends—a moment during his funeral which did not seem to them remarkable at the time, but which in retrospect was the last time they saw his family united. “It was a very cold day and there was snow,” one friend recalls. Because of the weather, many guests had not been able to make it to Chicago that day in January 1999; still, nearly 1,000 mourners had shown up at the Emanuel Congregation to pay their respects, forcing the police to barricade part of North Sheridan Road to make way for the limousines. That would would both settle the debts and provide new investment in Cuba, a win for both sides.
He is skeptical, however, that the US will agree to Cuba’s demands for compensation for damage caused by the embargo. The US government will want to protect its use of economic sanctions as a foreign policy tool. Feinberg expects, though, that any claims settlement will come under a broader agreement that will limit Cuban bitterness over that issue.
Meanwhile, the remaining $230 million in US personal claims against Cuba could be paid out in increments without hurting the government’s cash flow. But even that option won’t really be available to Lansky’s grandson.
“We never filed a claim with the government or hired an attorney earlier because we didn’t think the door for negotiating would ever actually open,” Rapoport told the Florida Sun-Sentinel. “Now it is open.”

LIFE ON THE internet has always been a battle between fakers and detectors of fakes, with both sides profiting off the clash. Early spam filters sifted emails for keywords, blocking messages with phrases like “FREE!” or “be over 21,” and they eventually learned to filter out entire styles of writing. Spammers responded by surrounding their pitches with snippets of human-sounding language lifted from old books and mashed together. (This type of message, dubbed “litspam,” became a genre unto itself.) As search engines grew more popular, creators looking to boost their pages’ rankings resorted to “keyword stuffing”—repeating the same word over and over—to get priority. Search engines countered by down-ranking those sites. After Google introduced its PageRank algorithm, which favored websites with lots of inbound links, spammers created entire ecosystems of mutually supporting pages.
Around the turn of the millennium, the captcha tool arrived to sort humans from bots based on their ability to interpret images of distorted text. Once some bots could handle that, captcha added other detection methods that included parsing images of motorbikes and trains, as well as sensing mouse movement and other user behavior. (In a recent test, an early version of GPT-4 showed that it knew how to hire a person on Taskrabbit to complete a captcha on its behalf.) The fates of entire companies have rested on the issue of spotting fakes: Elon Musk, in an attempt to wriggle out of his deal to buy Twitter, cited a bot detector to boost his argument that Twitter had misrepresented the number of bots on its site.
And how much electrical energy, how much climate warming nothingness, water sapping, community destroying, transportation gridlock creating hell do this fucking AI systems of oppression generate?
Amazon already operates two data centers in Umatilla, is building two more in the city, and has tax-break agreements for another two. Amazon also operates a data center in unincorporated Umatilla County, near Hermiston. It is building one inside the Hermiston city limits and has negotiated tax deals for two additional projects there.
Sabey is a privately held real estate company with a rapidly growing data center business. It already operates large Washington state data centers in Seattle, East Wenatchee and Quincy, along with two sites on the East Coast.
Sabey primarily contracts with other large tech companies to supplement their own data center capacity. Rob Rockwood, president of Sabey Data Centers, said Umatilla is well positioned in the western U.S. to capitalize on spillover demand from data centers in Hillsboro and Phoenix, Arizona.
It’s “a more or less undiscovered spot,” Rockwood said. He said Sabey will spend next year doing utility preparation work for the site and plans to start construction early in 2025, with the facility opening in 2027.
And franchise fees generated by data centers’ electrical use are now major contributors to Umatilla’s general fund. The city’s annual electrical franchise fees have grown from $253,000 to $1.4 million over the past decade, equivalent to 12% of Umatilla’s general fund.
Data centers in some parts of Oregon are large water consumers because of the evaporative cooling they use to chill their hardworking computers. Rockwood said Sabey’s Umatilla site will employ air cooling instead, which increases electricity consumption but uses very little water.

Water supplies for household use and irrigated agriculture rely on groundwater wells. When wells are drilled into a highly pressurized aquifer, groundwater may flow up the well and onto the land surface without pumping. These flowing artesian wells were common in the early 1900s in the United States before intensive groundwater withdrawals began, but their present-day prevalence remains unknown. Here, we compile and analyze ten thousand well water observations made more than a century ago. We show that flowing artesian conditions characterized ~61% of wells tapping confined aquifers before 1910, but only ~4% of wells tapping confined aquifers today. This pervasive loss of flowing artesian conditions evidences a widespread depressurization of confined aquifers after a century of intensive groundwater use in the United States. We conclude that this depressurization of confined aquifers has profoundly changed groundwater storage and flow, increasing the vulnerability of deep aquifers to pollutants and contributing to land subsidence.

“A recent Horizon 2020 research initiative, HBM4EU, measured chemicals in people’s bodies in Europe and detected BPA in the urine of 92 percent of adult participants from 11 European countries,” the agency wrote in a new report.
The Copenhagen-based EEA said the share of adults exceeding the recommended maximum levels ranged from 71 to 100 percent in the 11 countries studied, referring to levels outlined by the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) in an April review. (source)

West Virginia University’s board voted on Friday to cut the school’s world languages department and a third of its education department as part of an effort to keep the school “accessible and affordable and relevant,” its chair said.
Why it matters: The university’s decision to reduce parts of its liberal arts department may be a glimpse of the future of U.S. humanities studies, and more narrowly, may limit students in the poor, rural state.
The reductions come on top of major staff and program cuts approved by the board in June, which included 12 graduate and doctorate programs and 132 positions.
The board’s meeting on Friday was briefly interrupted by students protesting the cuts, and among dozens of speakers at the meeting, no one spoke in support of the plan, AP reports.
By the numbers: The board voted Friday to fire more than 140 faculty members and 28 majors, which is around 8% of the school’s programs.
Those figures were lower than originally proposed.

Podolyak was quoted as saying that India and China put on display their “weak intellectual potential” and also “fail to analyse the consequences of their actions”.

While world leaders turned up for this week’s Africa Climate Summit, one African president was deliberately absent. Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni didn’t want to be part of the hypocrisy – according to Kenyan media. Leaders of Nigeria and South Africa also failed to show up. And it’s not hard to understand why.
The root causes and solutions were barely acknowledged, namely the massive carbon footprint of other parts of the world. Probably because that would embarrass some big names in attendance.
Despite African branding, the Nairobi event was dominated by Western officials, from the EU’s von Der Leyen to US climate envoy John Kerry.
“Per capita America is the world’s biggest polluter, while Germany is shamelessly going back to using coal. All that while Africa is left suffering the impact of climate change brought on by the West’s decades of industrialisation.
Floods have killed hundreds in Central Africa, while millions on the Horn of Africa are food insecure due to years of drought. A solution presented by the likes of John Kerry is to issue ‘carbon markets’. That would see ‘credits’ bought and sold by companies to compensate for green house gas emissions. The real answer, is for major economies to stop polluting. Africa produces less than four per cent of global carbon emissions, so leave it alone. It’s simple.”
And, yes, the time is now for Russia to build relationships with African nations, and that eastern Russia, man, it needs guest workers, guest students, guest innovators, and if people want to settle here, then this has to be the plan, man.
Russia is huge, and the population is small. Russia, it’s your time, now, before Putin takes a dive.
Russian President Vladimir Putin opened and closed his quite detailed address to the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok with a resounding message: “The Far East is Russia’s strategic priority for the entire 21st century.”
And that’s exactly the feeling one would have prior to the address, interacting with business executives mingling across the stunning forum grounds at the Far Eastern Federal University (opened only 11 years ago), with the backdrop of the more than four kilometer-long suspension bridge to Russky Island across the Eastern Bosphorus strait.
The development possibilities of what is in effect Russian Asia, and one of the key nodes of Asia-Pacific, are literally mind-boggling. Data from the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East and the Arctic – confirmed by several of the most eye-catching panels during the Forum – list a whopping 2,800 investment projects underway, 646 of which are already up and running, complete with the creation of several international Advanced Special Economic Zones (ASEZ) and the expansion of the Free Port of Vladivostok, home to several hundred small and midsize enterprises (SMEs).
All that goes way beyond Russia’s “pivot to the East” which was announced by Putin in 2012, two years before the Maidan events in Kiev. For the rest of the planet, not to mention the collective west, it is impossible to understand the Russian Far East magic without being on the spot – starting with Vladivostok, the charming, unofficial capital of the Far East, with its gorgeous hills, striking architecture, verdant islands, sandy bays and of course the terminal of the legendary Trans-Siberian Railway.
Fuck USA. Fuck Canada. Fuck Europe. Fuck Israel. Fuck NZ and Australia and Japan and South Korea.

In the final declaration, the G77+China Summit highlighted the importance of technology for development, the impacts of climate change, and called for a reform of the international economic system. The event ended on Saturday September 16 in Havana, the capital of Cuba, and was attended by heads of state from Latin America, Africa, and Asia including Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, Colombian President Gustavo Petro, as well as United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and diplomats and delegations from more than 100 countries.
The summit is the largest event of countries from the Global South within the United Nations (UN).
“We stress the urgent need for a comprehensive reform of the international financial architecture and a more inclusive and coordinated approach to global financial governance, with greater emphasis on cooperation between countries, notably by increasing the representation of developing countries in global decision-making and policy-making bodies that will contribute to increasing the capacities of developing countries to access and develop science, technology and innovation,” says the Havana Declaration.

Shamir isn’t out to get Foxman, who’s a Holocaust survivor and one of the nation’s most powerful pro-Israel lobbyists, but the filmmaker clearly takes a different view of what’s good for the Jews and for the soul of Israel. A member of Israel’s peace movement, Shamir garnered widespread acclaim for his verité film Checkpoint, which assessed the impact of border-control posts in the Israeli-occupied territories, both on the Israeli soldiers who manned them and on the Palestinians forced to pass through them. His superb 5 Days observed Israel’s 2005 pullout from Gaza with approval — and with sympathy for the anguish of both the evicted settlers and the soldiers, whose orders were to remove resisters bodily from their homes.
Asked by a Sundance Film Festival audience member how he felt about the pullout, Shamir answered wryly, “As a peacenik, I was glad things went smoothly. As a filmmaker, I was hoping for more trouble.”
Shamir instinctively goes where the drama is, but he also has a gadfly’s sharp radar for the gap between rhetoric and reality. When he presses ADL staffers for evidence to back up their claims of a sharp spike in North American anti-Semitism in 2007, they can offer only wan transgressions — letters from employees denied time off for a Jewish holiday, or people offended by a cop’s incautious use of the word “Jew” — that hardly stack up compared with the Holocaust, which is repeatedly invoked by ADL officials as something that could happen again anytime, anywhere.
But he also finds an Orthodox rabbi who notes that when a black person robs a Jew, the crime isn’t necessarily an anti-Semitic one. The rabbi ventures further that the hypervigilance of the ADL inflames already volatile relations between Jews and blacks.
Indeed, Shamir finds far more sensitivity to anti-Semitism among secular Jews than among their religious counterparts, both in the United States and in Israel. Accompanying Israeli teenagers on a school trip to concentration camps in Poland, Shamir watches as their teachers, guides and a zealous security detail whip up fears of rampant neo-Nazism among their charges. One student, hilariously, comes away from an encounter with elderly Polish locals (who speak not a word of English) with the firm conviction that they’ve called her a “monkey” and a “donkey.”
If Shamir is gifted with an anthropologist’s openness to complication, he also has a contrarian’s impish appetite for the opposing argument, the more intemperately expressed the better. The leftist Israeli publisher Uri Avnery assures him that anti-Semitism in America is “a Jewish invention,” while Norman Finkelstein — a professor and son of Holocaust survivors who argues in his controversial book The Holocaust Industry that Israel and its supporters play the Shoah card to justify the oppression of the Palestinians — denounces Foxman as a “thug and a hoodlum.”
And here we are, then, AntiSemitism is a fucking joke to the rest of the world:

Only when the Jews gather in the Land of their Forefathers and constitute the majority there, will anti-Semitism disappear throughout the world. Thus spoke Herzl, the founder of modern Zionism.
Nowadays this myth, too, is giving up its blessed soul. The very opposite is happening: the State of Israel is causing the resurrection of anti-Semitism all over the world, threatening Jews everywhere.
The Sharon government is a giant laboratory for the growing of the anti-Semitism virus. It exports it to the whole world. Anti-Semitic organizations, which for many years vegetated on the margins of society, rejected and despised, are suddenly growing and flowering. Anti-Semitism, which has hidden itself in shame since World War II, is now riding on a great wave of opposition to Sharon’s policy of oppression.
Sharon’s propaganda agents are pouring oil on the flames. Accusing all critics of his policy of being anti-Semites, they brand large communities with this mark. Many good people, who feel no hatred at all towards the Jews, but who detest the persecution of the Palestinians, are now called anti-Semites. Thus the sting is taken out of this word, giving it something approaching respectability.
The practical upshot: not only does Israel not protect the Jews from anti-Semitism, but quite on the contrary – Israel manufactures and exports the anti-Semitism that threatens Jews around the world.
For many years, Israel enjoyed the sympathy of most people. It was seen as the state of the holocaust survivors, a small and courageous country defending itself against the repeated assaults of murderous Arabs. Slowly, this image has been replaced by another: a cruel, brutal and colonizing state, oppressing a small and helpless people. The persecuted has become the persecutor, David has turned onto Goliath.
We Israelis, living in a bubble of self-brain-washing, find it hard to imagine how the world sees us. In many countries, television and newspapers publish daily pictures of Palestinian children throwing stones at monstrous tanks, soldiers harassing women at the checkpoints, despairing old men sitting on the ruins of their demolished homes, soldiers taking aim and shooting children. These soldiers do not look like human beings in uniform – “the neighbor’s son” as they look to Israelis, but like robots without faces, armed to the teeth, heads hidden by helmets, bullet-proof vests changing their proportions. People who have seen these photos dozens and hundreds of times start to see the Israel in this image.
For Jews, this creates a dangerous vicious circle. Sharon’s actions create repulsion and opposition throughout the world. These reinforce anti-Semitism. Faced with this danger, Jewish organizations are pushed into defending Israel and giving it unqualified support. This support enables the anti-Semites to attack not only the government of Israel, but the local Jews, too. And so on.
In Europe, Jews already feel the pressure. But in the United States, they still feel supremely self-confident. In Europe, Jews have learned over the centuries that it is not wise to be too conspicuous and to display their wealth and influence. But in America, the very opposite is happening: the Jewish establishment is practically straining to prove that it controls the country.
Every few years, the Jewish lobby “eliminates” an American politician who does not support the Israeli government unconditionally. This is not done secretly, behind the scenes, but as a public “execution”. Just now this was done to the black Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, a young, active, intelligent and very sympathetic woman. She has dared to criticize the Sharon government, support Palestinians and (worst of all) Israeli and Jewish peace groups. The Jewish establishment found a counter-candidate, a practically unknown black woman, injected huge sums into the campaign and defeated Cynthia.
All this happened in the open, with fanfares, to make a public example – so that every Senator and Congressperson would know that criticizing Sharon is tantamount to political suicide.
Now this is repeated in a big way. The pro-Israel lobby – which consists of Jews and extreme right-wing Christian fundamentalists – is pushing the American administration to start a war. This, too, openly, in full view of the American public. Dozens of articles in the important newspapers point this out as a plain political fact.
What will happen if the war ends in failure? If it has unexpected negative results and many young Americans die? If the American public turns against it, as happened during the Vietnam War? One can easily imagine a whispering campaign starting: “The Jews have pushed us into this,” “The Jews support Israel more than they support America,” and, finally, “The Jews control our country.”
Furthermore, Sharon may sooner or later bring about a revolution in the Arab world. This will be a disaster for American interests. American Jews, now completely identified with Israel, will be blamed.
Anyhow, the conspicuousness of the Jews in the United States, especially in the media, and their disproportionate influence over the Congress and the White House, can backfire one of these days.
Of course, the special political culture of the United States encourages such phenomena – but that was also true in Spain of the “Golden Age” and the Weimar republic in Germany. History does not have to repeat itself, but neither should one disregard its lessons.
There are people in Israel people who secretly wish for the victory of anti-Semitism everywhere. That would confirm another Zionist myth on which we were brought up: that Jews will not be able to live anywhere but in Israel, because anti-Semitism is bound to triumph everywhere. But the United States is not France or Argentina, it plays a critical role in the Middle East. Israel’s national security, as established by all Israeli governments since Ben-Gurion, is based on the total support of the United States – military, political and economic.
If I were asked for advice, I would counsel the Jewish communities throughout the world as follows: break out of the vicious circle. Disarm the anti-Semites. Break the habit of automatic identification with everything our governments do. Let your conscience speak out. Return to the traditional Jewish values of “That which is altogether just shalt thou follow!” (Deuteronomy 16,20) and “Seek peace and pursue it!” (Psalms 34, 14). Identify yourselves with the Other Israel, which is struggling to uphold these values at home.
All over the world, new Jewish groups that follow this way are multiplying. They break yet another myth: the duty of Jews everywhere to subordinate themselves to the edicts of our government.
Pointing to the recent threats against Syrian government, Escobar argues that there are powerful interests itching for war who should not be underestimated.
Escobar also maintains that there are substantial sectors of the industrial-military complex – including their think tanks; the Israel lobby, especially via AIPAC and WINEP; the neo-cons, which may be dead but not buried; the House of Saud; and sections of US corporate media such as the CNN.
