“Women are oppressed in all religions. The problem is not Islam, it is the political systems that use Islam and religion.” She wrote a book called God Resigns at the Summit Meeting, in which God is questioned by Jewish, Muslim and Christian prophets and finally quits. It proved to be so controversial that the police under the Mubarak regime ordered the publisher to burn the book. She said it happened since the “regime felt God Resigns was a dangerous book because it could open people’s minds. To be a dictator and control people you must veil their minds. Our role, as writers, is to unveil it.” Her criticism of religion (of all religions) was founded primarily on the basis that it oppresses women, and the biggest threat to women’s liberation today is religious extremism. In a 2014 interview, she said that “the root of the oppression of women lies in the global post-modern capitalist system, which is supported by religious fundamentalism”. El Saadawi fears that the global and religious fundamentalist movement is holding back progress regarding women’s rights and issues such as female genital mutilation, especially in Egypt.
“Women are deceived by the media, by the capitalist, patriarchal, racist media. They are brainwashed, so they have the impression that they are free, but they are not free. They think, ‘If I uncover my breast and wear low jeans, then I am free’, but completely the opposite, it means I am a sex object. And the veiled woman considers herself a stigma, so she covers herself. Feminism is not just one thing, there are many types of feminism: liberal feminists, socialist feminists, Islamic feminists, Jewish feminists, Christian feminists – there are many types. Real feminism is the woman who is liberated from both patriarchy and capitalism. Patriarchal oppression and class oppression and religious oppression are one.”
Nawal El Saadawi: ‘Religion is all politics’
“People, especially women, are afraid of loneliness,” she continues, “but loneliness is an illusion, like death. In Egypt, you find a woman who is educated, a professor maybe, and her husband beats her and oppresses her, but she is afraid to divorce him because she will be alone. In my life, I discovered that loneliness is paradise! I need loneliness, I need silence, to write. When you do not have something to do – in your head – you feel lonely. But if you put me in a room, in a prison even, I have something to do, something to say, something to write, I am occupied, therefore I don’t feel lonely.”
The day before our meeting at her hotel in Waterloo, Nawal was interviewed on Channel 4 News by Krishnan Guru-Murthy and on the BBC’s Hard Talk, “quarrelling” with the presenter Zeinab Badawi who suggested that Nawal might consider toning it down and being “less outspoken” about the issues she has tirelessly campaigned against throughout her life, such as FGM, which she experienced as a child, and (in its many, many guises) patriarchal oppression. Nawal answered firmly: “No. I should be more outspoken, I should be more aggressive, because the world is becoming more aggressive, and we need people to speak loudly against injustices. I speak loudly because I am angry.”
“Everybody is very much interested in the physical veil – the religious Islamic veil. But what we don’t see is the veil of the mind. We are all exposed to the veil of the mind, by education, by religion, by patriarchy, by fear, by marriage, by the moral code. As women, we are always pushed to be hidden, to be veiled, even if we are not aware of that.” As I find out, Nawal is just as against women wearing very heavy makeup and the sort of ‘naked feminism’ that has been popularised by American celebrities like Kim Kardashian, as she is women wearing veils. “In Egypt, you find contradictions, because there is the Islamisation of Egypt, and the Americanisation of Egypt. Nakedness and veiling go hand in hand. Some Egyptian women, like the Americans, show their breasts and wear mini skirts and a lot of makeup, and then other women are very veiled. In the middle you have women who accommodate Islamisation and Americanisation, so they cover their head and their hair, but they uncover their belly with jeans that are very low and the stomach is visible. So in fact women are really oppressed by both Islamisation and Americanisation.”

His Golan Heights: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is dropping lawsuits that sought to buy out Native Hawaiians who own small pieces of land within his sprawling Kauai estate, after days of public outcry.
State representatives had criticized the legal action, while neighbors of the property reportedly planned to march this week in protest.
Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, said in a letter to the community published Friday in The Garden Island newspaper that they are ending the cases “to find a better path forward.” They say they “will work together with the community on a new approach.”
A Zuckerberg spokesman confirmed the couple sent the letter.
The 14 parcels mostly belong to Native Hawaiian families awarded the land during the mid-19th century, when private property was established in Hawaii. Many original owners died without wills. Ownership today is split among hundreds of descendants, many of whom are unaware of their shares.

In April 2024, Congress passed what is known as the TikTok “divestment-or-ban” bill, which President Biden quickly signed into law. In the Senate, the legislation passed as a rider on a measure to provide $95 billion in mostly military aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, the international news agency Reuters reported. The military aid warrants concern in its own right, but the added censorship of the popular social media platform is deeply problematic.
As Omar Zahzah observed in a June 2024 article for Electronic Intifada, “It is no surprise that a bill furthering US funding for imperialism and genocide should also fortify US imperialism on the digital front.”
From a global perspective, (Reporters without Borders) RSF noted “a worrying decline” in respect for media autonomy, increased pressure from state or other political actors, and “a clear lack of political will on the part of the international community to enforce the principles of protection of journalists.” Nowhere has the latter been more evident than in Israeli-occupied Palestine, including Gaza especially, where RSF reported a “record number of violations against journalists and the media” since October 2023, including the killing of Palestinian journalists by Israel Defense Forces.
The fundamental missions of journalism are to hold the powerful to account and to give the public the information required to be citizens of a democracy.

Companies like Meta work hard to keep all your Attention focused on their platforms (i.e., Facebook, Instagram, and now Threads) to collect, analyze, and sell your data and generate billions of advertising revenue. 2023 Social media advertising revenue is projected to hit $207 billion. We now spend almost three hours daily immersed in the Attention Economy. Our smartphone, a primary access point into this economy, is now the first thing you pick up in the morning and the last thing most people put down at night.

Social media has a reinforcing nature. Using it activates the brain’s reward center by releasing dopamine, a “feel-good chemical” linked to pleasurable activities such as sex, food, and social interaction. The platforms are designed to be addictive and are associated with anxiety, depression, and even physical ailments.
According to the Pew Research Center, 69% of adults and 81% of teens in the U.S. use social media. This puts a large amount of the population at an increased risk of feeling anxious, depressed, or ill over their social media use.
But what makes users come back for more even when it can literally make them feel sick?
“When the outcome is unpredictable, the behavior is more likely to repeat. Think of a slot machine: if game players knew they never were going to get money by playing the game, then they never would play,” Sperling says.
“The idea of a potential future reward keeps the machines in use. The same goes for social media sites. One does not know how many likes a picture will get, who will ‘like’ the picture, and when the picture will receive likes. The unknown outcome and the possibility of a desired outcome can keep users engaged with the sites.”

How’s that working out for “older” people?
Older adults in the US are still experiencing loneliness and social isolation, even after the pandemic. This is according to a new study published by the American Medical Association’s JAMA Network. In 2024, specifically, the survey found that out of the 2,051 to 2,576 respondents included, 29.2% of adults aged 50 to 80 reported feeling isolated from others “some of the time” or “often” over the past year. Those who reported a high rate of loneliness were also more likely to experience social isolation, and loneliness was most common among people not working, living alone, and those with lower household incomes.
The last time the U.S. government undertook such a massive effort was in the 1950s during the Eisenhower administration, whose plan of pairing federal authorities with local police Trump has pointed to as a model for his ambitions.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security estimated some 11 million immigrants were in the U.S. illegally as of January 2022, although the figure is likely higher today. In the NBC News interview, Welker asked Trump if his plan was to deport everyone without legal status.
“I think you have to do it,” Trump said. “It’s a very tough thing to do. You know, you have rules, regulations, laws.”

After a rather turbulent 48 hours I am safe and will be writing and broadcasting as normal very shortly. I had one hour to pack one suitcase, take one dog and get through a border swarming with armed thugs looting and fighting amongst themselves over the spoils. The night before was spent besieged by armed groups firing in the air to celebrate their “victory” while Israel started using bunker buster bombs on Syrian military sites and air defence close to the house. The house shook from top to bottom. At 10am truckloads of armed thieves arrived and battered at my front gate. I was on the phone to a friend who begged me to find a weapon – clearly I don’t have any. I yelled at them from inside and the dogs went crazy. After three batterings they left.

I wrote this note this morning. I need a long time to process the loss for the whole world and for me as a human being who saw my future living in my beloved Syria.

The US backed al Qaeda takeover of Syria follows Israeli retreat from Lebanon Within hours of the Israeli-Lebanese cease fire – essentially an Israeli retreat after making no progress against Hezbollah in the ground war in south Lebanon, indicted war criminal Netanyahu turned his attention to Syria, warning Syrian President Bashar al Assad that he was “playing with fire.”
The Israelis had long attacked Syria and wanted to remove the independent state as the key link between Iran and Lebanon, a conduit for material support to both the Palestinian and Lebanese resistance.
At a NATO summit, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said Syria’s key allies – Russia, Iran and Hezbollah – “had all been distracted” by their own problems, and “it looks like HTS took advantage of that fact.” More to the point, Washington, “Israel”, and Turkiye took advantage of that fact.
According to Palestinian journalist in Washington Saeed Arikat, the HTS attack was coordinated by the Biden administration with Turkiye and “Israel” and “came as a result of American-Israeli emergency plan” as part of “an American vision” for the second day of the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon, “especially in light of the failure of the Israelis to achieve a decisive victory” against Hezbollah and that this is “an effort to inflict a defeat on Iran and its allies in the region” such as the Syrian Army which regained control of Aleppo eight years ago. The plan was a tremendous success.
The rapid collapse of the Syrian army in city after city – Aleppo, Hama, Homs, and Damascus – made the takeover seem an almost bloodless coup. In the absence of any real resistance to the Turkish backed and equipped invasion (Erdogan’s Muslim Brotherhood partners, the Qataris, have also been funding HTS).
President Assad and his family fled the country (apparently to Russia) and his Prime Minister Mohammed Gazi Jalali surrendered to HTS. The “rebel” leader al-Jolani made some placating noises about no reprisals and leaving public buildings intact, but the history of this group is bloody and sectarian.
Clearly, some sort of deal was made, in part to save lives – but details are unclear. We do know who gained. The Israelis have been rewarded, probably beyond their expectations, by the removal of the key link between Iran and the Palestinian and Lebanese Resistance. Netanyahu has been more than compensated for the Israeli defeat in south Lebanon and effectively rewarded for his genocide in Gaza.
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham is the successor to Jahbat al-Nusra, the al-Qaeda franchise in Syria which has been semi-covertly backed by Washington and other NATO regimes, especially that of Erdogan in Turkiye, which has stationed Turkish troops in North Syria for several years. Unlike the Resistance groups Hamas, PIJ, and Hezbollah, which are only listed as “terrorist” in the Anglo American states and their allies, HTS is banned by the UN Security Council.
It remains to be seen how Washington and its hangers on will try to recognise a “government” led by a group still branded as “terrorist” under both US and international law. The HTS regime was also supported by the three foreign states which still militarily occupy Syria: Turkiye, “Israel”, and the USA.
Some rebranding is on its way; but that is a US specialty.
Friendly relations between HTS “rebels” (many of whom are non-Syrians) and “Israel” are well known. Several years earlier Israeli hospitals were patching up al-Qaeda fighters and sending them back into Syria. “Israel” had then helped evacuate fighters and their crisis actors, The White Helmets, to Israeli territory, in 2018. More recently, HTS has sent reassuring messages to the Israelis, assuring them that their fight was only with the Assad government. HTS supporters even thanked the Israelis for killing Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah.
Nevertheless, within hours of the HTS takeover of Damascus, Israeli tanks had crossed into south Syria near Quneitra, allegedly “to fight off Islamist rebels”.
Bashar al-Assad is no longer the president of Syria after a shocking coup that has left the world wondering: What deal was made behind closed doors? As we wait for answers, Rebranded Al-Qaeda (HTS) has pledged to create a transitional government, and Israel is already ramping up strikes against the Syrian military and expanding its occupation of Syrian territory.
Kevork Almassian, Host of Syriana Analysis, noted that the end of the Syrian Government likely means the end of the “Axis of Resistance,” as the new government that takes shape is expected to have the interests of the U.S., Israel and Turkey directly involved, which means cutting off the supply lines to Hezbollah and other groups that support the Palestinian resistance.
Oh, those fucking quippy and narrative heavyweights of the Jewish Holly-dirt Variety are already scripting the Netflix and Hulu and HBO-Max motherfucking Goyim Brain Drain series.
Predictably, Israel has used the overthrowing of Assad to annex more Syrian land in the Golan Heights buffer zone which has large reserves of oil. Remember, redrawing borders by force is only bad when Putin does it. Israel says it’s “strengthening” its border in case the Jihadists, who they just helped, turn on them. None of this makes sense until you realise the goal of the West has always been to keep the Middle East fighting endlessly.
Unquestionably, the weirdest (but least surprising) aspect of this whole drama is how easily liberals have been programmed by the propaganda. After spending two decades agreeing that ISIS and Al Qaida are evil incarnate (a correct take), they’ve now decided they’re moderate actually. They even seem to think it’s a hate crime to suggest otherwise!
The comments I’ve seen range from “Well, what is the alternative to HTS?” to “What are you, some kind of Assadist?” The implication is that Assad had to go and therefore anything, even the worst people alive, would be preferable. This is like handing control of the US to the KKK and making the Grand Wizard president because you dislike Trump. Honestly, that would be less insane than what we’re currently witnessing.
Whatever you think of Assad, and I’m no fan, Assad is not worse than monsters like Trump or Biden or Netanyahu. Do you think it would be a good idea for ISIS to take over Israel? I’m guessing your answer is no.
Liberals have this spectacular ability to turn anything into a binary and reach the conclusion that if you can’t find a solution, the worst possible outcome is preferable to the status quo, but only in foreign countries, never their own. It’s that time of year again: when Hollywood’s thought police undertake to ensure that American celebrity culture remains firmly in the service of the Zionist narrative.
[On Wednesday evening, Mexican actress Barrera defended her comments.
Posting on Instagram she wrote: “I believe a group of people are not their leadership and that no governing body should be above criticism.
“I pray day and night for no more deaths, for no more violence and for peaceful co-existence. I will continue to speak out for those that need it most and continue to advocate for peace and safety, for human rights and freedom.
“Silence is not an option for me.”
Before her departure was announced, Barrera reshared a quote from another account on her Instagram story which read: “At the end of the day, I’d rather be excluded for who I include, than be included for who I exclude.”]
In one prominent case, actress Melissa Barrera – a star of the horror film franchise Scream – was recently fired from her role in the next instalment of the series for posting on social media about Israel’s latest real-life horror show in the Gaza Strip.
Since October 7, the Israeli military has killed more than 16,000 Palestinians in Gaza, among them more than 6,000 children. Barrera’s crimes included calling for a ceasefire and quoting Israeli historian Raz Segal, an Israeli professor of Holocaust and genocide studies at Stockton University in New Jersey, who has argued that Israel’s current behaviour constitutes a “textbook case of genocide”.
The Spyglass Media Group production company was responsible for the firing, contending that Barrera’s social media posts on Palestine were anti-Semitic. After all, there is nothing more anti-Semitic than quoting an Israeli genocide scholar on the topic of genocide.
In its writeup of the Barrera episode, Newsweek magazine felt compelled to state that “some critics of Zionism have argued the creation of Israel forced Palestinians off their land in what is called the Nakba”. This is the equivalent, in terms of ludicrousness, of stating that “some critics of meteorology have argued that hurricanes don’t exist”.
Given the established fact that the creation of the state of Israel entailed the destruction of some 500 Palestinian villages, the slaughter of more than 10,000 Palestinians, and the expulsion of 750,000 more, it seems Newsweek has taken a page from the Hollywood playbook of diluting criticism of Israel.
Barrera is not the only Hollywood star to come under fire for defying the Zionist script. In November, actress Susan Sarandon was dropped as a client by United Talent Agency (UTA) after speaking at a pro-Palestinian rally. And actor Mark Ruffalo, who during Israel’s May 2021 bout of slaughter in Gaza was forced to apologise for invoking the term “genocide”, has once again come to occupy Zionist social media crosshairs for opining that neither Palestinian nor Israeli children should suffer.
Meanwhile, many more complicit A-listers have tripped over themselves to “stand with Israel”. At the outset of the war, actress Jamie Lee Curtis shared a photo of Palestinian children fleeing Israeli bombs but mistakenly cast them as Israeli children subjected to Palestinian “terror from the skies”.
Anyway, the movie industry is all about making up stories, right?
For her part, the Israeli beauty queen-turned-Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot took to Instagram to rally support for what has turned into a nonstop massacre in Gaza: “I stand with Israel you should too”.
Gadot, who has played an outsized role in whitewashing the Israeli occupation and predilection for mass killing, was applauded by Time Magazine as one of the world’s 100 most influential people in 2018 and was once hailed by former Israeli President Reuven Rivlin as a “true and beloved ambassador” for the state of Israel.

Speaking of weapons, Gadot appeared on the cover of Maxim magazine in 2007 as part of a photoshoot of female Israeli soldiers in bikinis and other scanty attire. Who said ethnic cleansing wasn’t sexy?
The Maxim photo spread propelled Gadot’s fame and wealth; she and her husband Jason Varsano later launched their very own production company, Pilot Wave, which is now involved in Gadot’s much-anticipated silver screen interpretation of Cleopatra – sure to be a box office hit for Orientalist showbiz.
Israel’s onscreen image also got a boost in 2022 when Disney’s Marvel Studios announced that the forthcoming film Captain America: New World Order would feature a character named Sabra, a member of Israel’s notoriously criminal spy agency Mossad. As I pointed out at the time, this Disney venture amounted to putting a superheroine’s cape on state savagery.
Why, then, does Hollywood have such an Israel problem? To be sure, there is no need to resort to conspiracy theories to explain the film industry’s affection for a state synonymous with oppression; quite simply, Israel’s very special relationship with the United States means that the exaltation of Israel in pop culture directly serves US foreign policy goals.
[A senior figure at another Hollywood agency, Maha Dakhil of CAA, has also had backlash for Instagram posts about the conflict, one of which said: “What’s more heartbreaking than witnessing genocide? Witnessing the denial that genocide is happening.”
As a result, Ms Dakhil was relieved of her duties as co-chief the motion pictures department, although she was allowed to remain an agent.]
And the propaganda campaign is so relentless that, when the likes of socialites Paris Hilton and Kendall Jenner stage brief shows of compassion for the Palestinian cause on social media, the posts are quickly deleted.
Among Zionism’s favourite celebrity targets are supermodel sisters Gigi and Bella Hadid, whose father Mohamed was born in Palestine in 1948 – the same year “some critics” argue that the creation of Israel upended Palestinian existence, to borrow Newsweek’s diplomatic words.
In 2021, the sisters were smeared along with British singer Dua Lipa in a full-page New York Times advertisement implicitly accusing them of endorsing a “second Holocaust” of Jews perpetrated by Hamas. Russia got involved in the Syrian Civil War only in September 2015, when Assad’s Syrian Arab Army (SAA) was on the verge of collapse. In February of that year, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the Minsk Agreements, effectively putting the Donbas war, which had broken out in the spring of 2014, “on hold”.
One month earlier, pro-Russian rebels were amid a military offensive, and the Ukrainian military was on the verge of collapse. But Putin decided to freeze the conflict and focus on Syria instead.
In October 2016, former Russian general Leonid Ivashov explained on Russian state-owned Channel One that the Kremlin’s engagement in the Syrian conflict was “critical to prevent the construction of the Quatar-Turkey pipeline, which would be catastrophic for Gazprom”.
Besides that, in the war-torn Middle Eastern country, Russia and the United States reportedly had the same opponent – the Islamic State (IS). The SAA would have had difficulty defeating the IS if it hadn’t been for Russia and the Wagner Group. In 2015-2016, Russian forces, along with Hezbollah and other Iran-affiliated groups, also played an important role in the battle for Aleppo, significant parts of which were under the control of the Western-backed Syrian militias.
Indeed, Moscow and Tehran helped Assad stabilise the situation in Syria. The conflict was put “on hold” in 2020 when the last significant battles occurred. After that, Russia began preparing to invade Ukraine, while anti-Assad rebels, strongly backed by Turkey, used the “break” to consolidate, rearm, and continue with what they see as the Syrian revolution. The SAA apparently did nothing to prepare for another round of fighting.
2024 Russia is bogged down in Ukraine, with no strategic goals achieved. Hezbollah was defeated by Israel, whose military killed not only the group’s entire leadership but also dozens of top Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commanders in Syria.
The Wagner Group, following the murder of its founder, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has been integrated into the Russian National Guard (Rosgvardiya), with some of its elements deployed to Africa. Assad, therefore, is unlikely to be able to count on its help either.
His SAA seems to be on its own against well-armed and highly motivated Turkey-backed rebel forces. There are, however, two things that can prevent further falls in SAA-controlled cities. This time, it is Iran, rather than Russia, that could play a pivotal role in a new stage of the Syrian Civil War.

If Assad survives politically and biologically, it will likely be due to Tehran’s support. However, whether Iran has the capacity and political will to help the Syrian leader remains highly uncertain.
Also, a potential deal between Putin and the West could halt the rebels’ offensive, although that does not mean the SAA will recapture Aleppo or any other vital cities it has lost in the past few days. In other words, Putin would have to make serious concessions to the United States and its allies in Ukraine to be allowed to “save face” in Syria. But how likely is such an outcome?
Assad’s defeat would automatically signify Moscow’s defeat. If the Western-backed rebels seize power in Damascus, Russia will have to immediately shut down its Khmeimim Air Base in the Latakia area and the naval facility in Tartus. Since Russia and Syria have no land connection, the Kremlin would be forced to ask NATO member Turkey for permission to allow its vessels to pass through the Bosporus and Dardanelles on their way back to Russia.
To get the green light from Ankara, Putin may have to make concessions to his “friend”, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. But that’s not all. On their way through the Black Sea, Russian vessels would become an easy target for the Ukrainian military.
All of the Kremlin’s choices seem difficult. To avoid another large-scale humiliation, whether in Ukraine or Syria, Putin will have to pay a heavy price. Since reaching deals with the West (and then accusing his Western partners of “deceiving him” and “leading him by the nose”) seems to be the core of his reign, he is likely to try to use his old strategy: making painful concessions to the West and selling it to his audience as another “geopolitical victory.”
Syria and Bashar al-Assad could quickly become the most significant “collateral damage” of Putin’s approach. Given that Russia is not in a position to seriously help Damascus unless Iran intervenes, Assad will have a hard time stopping the rebels’ offensive. As a result, Russia could eventually lose Syria as an ally.
Pro-Kremlin analysts and propagandists have already started blaming Assad and the SAA for “not learning the lessons” from the Ukraine war and preparing for another round of fighting against Western-backed rebels. In reality, Assad is not an autonomous actor but a leader who remains utterly dependent on Moscow and Tehran. Therefore, for everything happening in Assad-controlled parts of Syria, Russia and Iran, as his significant sponsors, bear full responsibility.
Quite aware of that, many pro-Assad Syrians have already started blaming the Kremlin for the role it is playing in their country. They are unhappy about the fact that Moscow never prevents Israel from bombing SAA positions. Now that militants from the Jabhat al-Nusra group are advancing toward Hama, speculations in Syria are growing that Russia might betray Assad, which would have dramatic consequences for the Alawites, Christians, and other minorities in the Middle Eastern country.
One thing is for sure: under the current geopolitical circumstances, where Russia repeatedly shows weakness and suffers humiliation, it cannot have both Ukraine and Syria. It remains to be seen what Putin will decide to sacrifice. Maybe both?

It is very difficult to see the tide turning in Syria. The Russians now have either to massively reinforce their Syrian bases with ground troops or to evacuate them. Faced with the exigencies of Ukraine, they may do the latter, and it is reported that the Russian navy has already set sail from Tartus.
The speed of collapse of Syria has taken everybody by surprise. If the situation does not stabilise, Damascus could be besieged and ISIS back on the hills above the Bekaa valley within a week, given the speed of their advance and the short distances involved.
A renewed Israeli attack on Southern Lebanon to coincide with a Salafist invasion of the Bekaa Valley would then seem inevitable, as the Israelis would obviously wish their border with their new Taliban-style Greater Syrian neighbour to be as far North as possible. It could be a race for Beirut, unless the Americans have already organised who gets it.
It is no coincidence that the attack on Syria started the day of the Lebanon/Israel ceasefire. On November 19, President-Elect Donald Trump announced that Howard Lutnick, CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald and co-chair of his transition team, would be his nominee for Commerce Secretary. Lutnick’s company Cantor Fitzgerald and its subsidiaries are multinational in scope, promote the implementation of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (which have major implications for debt politics and economic activity), and are even directly partnered with foreign state-owned firms that recently came under scrutiny following the release of the contents of the laptop of the current (and recently pardoned) First Son, Hunter Biden.
Lutnick had previously been angling for a job as incoming Treasury Secretary, an unsurprising ambition given Cantor Fitzgerald’s outsized role in the U.S. Treasury market (i.e. the U.S. government debt market) and its relationship to dollar stablecoins, which are rapidly becoming one of the main purchasers of U.S. debt. It is unknown currently why Lutnick was passed over for Treasury, despite endorsement for the position from Elon Musk and RFK Jr., and appointed to Commerce instead. However, Trump’s previous Commerce Secretary, Wilbur Ross, was widely believed to have been given the role to repay a past favor of major significance. In Ross’s case, it was his assistance in rescuing Trump from bankruptcy in the early 1990s. At the time, Ross worked for Rothschild Inc., and when clarifying why the European banking dynasty had bailed out the future President, Ross stated “the Trump name is still very much an asset.” Shortly before, Rothschild Inc. had been bankrolling the entry of Robert Maxwell, intelligence asset for Israel and arguably the Soviet Union, into the American economy, with a specific focus on New York City.
During and following the campaign, Lutnick has been a major supporter of Trump’s prospective plan to implement an extensive tariff regime in lieu of income tax. Abstract
Background
More than half of the current US population was exposed to adverse lead levels in childhood as a result of lead’s past use in gasoline. The total contribution of childhood lead exposures to US-population mental health and personality has yet to be evaluated.
Methods
We combined serial, cross-sectional blood–lead level (BLL) data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) with historic leaded-gasoline data to estimate US childhood BLLs from 1940 to 2015 and calculate population mental-health symptom elevations from known lead-psychopathology associations. We utilized five outcomes: (1) General Psychopathology “points”, reflecting an individual’s liability to overall mental disorder, scaled to match IQ scores (M = 100, SD = 15); (2) Symptoms of Internalizing disorders (anxiety and depression) and Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD), both z-scored (M = 0, SD = 1); and (3) Differences in the personality traits of Neuroticism and Conscientiousness (M = 0, SD = 1).
Results
Assuming that published lead-psychopathology associations are causal and not purely correlational: We estimate that by 2015, the US population had gained 602-million General Psychopathology factor points because of exposure arising from leaded gasoline, reflecting a 0.13-standard-deviation increase in overall liability to mental illness in the population and an estimated 151 million excess mental disorders attributable to lead exposure. Investigation of specific disorder-domain symptoms identified a 0.64-standard-deviation increase in population-level Internalizing symptoms and a 0.42-standard-deviation increase in AD/HD symptoms. Population-level Neuroticism increased by 0.14 standard deviations and Conscientiousness decreased by 0.20 standard deviations. Lead-associated mental health and personality differences were most pronounced for cohorts born from 1966 through 1986 (Generation X).
Conclusions
A significant burden of mental illness symptomatology and disadvantageous personality differences can be attributed to US children’s exposure to lead over the past 75 years. Lead’s potential contribution to psychiatry, medicine, and children’s health may be larger than previously assumed.

Over the last several decades, studies show puberty is starting earlier in young girls. It’s a trend researchers call alarming. And now they’ve identified a specific chemical that may be part of the problem.
A study published inJAMA Network looked at the average age of first menstruation of more than 71 thousand women. When comparing women born in 1950 to 1969… and those born from 2000 to 2005… It found the average age decreased from 12.5 to 11.9 years old.
Susan Pinney, PhD, Epidemiologist at University of Cincinnati College of Medicine says, “It’s a time where certain parameters are set leading into later life.”
Early puberty is linked to an increased risk of health issues such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and breast cancer.
Professor Pinney says, “That’s why we worry about environmental exposures during puberty that seem to perturb the normal pattern of development.”
Researchers with NIH say the rapid pace of these changes’ points to environmental factors. They studied more than 10 thousand compounds found in drugs and chemicals. Of those, one in particular stood out.
Musk Ambrette is a fragrance molecule found in some soaps, detergents, perfumes, and lotions. The study found this chemical can impact the area of the brain that releases hormones to trigger puberty. Professor Pinney says delayed puberty is also a problem brought on by the same environmental factors.

Desertification talks open in Saudi Arabia as experts fire warning
UN talks aimed at halting the degradation and desertification of vast swathes of land started in Saudi Arabia on Monday after scientists fired a stark warning over unsustainable farming and deforestation.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called it a “moonshot moment”: a 12-day meeting for the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), looking to protect and restore land and respond to drought amid the onslaught of climate change.
The last such meeting, or “Conference of the Parties” (COP) to the convention, held in Ivory Coast in 2022, produced a commitment to “accelerating the restoration of one billion hectares of degraded land by 2030”.
But the UNCCD, which brings together 196 countries and the European Union, now says 1.5 billion hectares (3.7 billion acres) must be restored by decade’s end to combat crises including escalating droughts.
A day before the COP16 talks in Saudi Arabia, home to one of the world’s biggest deserts, a new UN report warned that forest loss and degraded soils were reducing resilience to climate change and biodiversity loss.
