“The Israeli government cannot claim to be keeping Palestinians safe when it kills them along escape routes, bombs so-called safe zones, and cuts off food, water, and sanitation,” said Nadia Hardman, refugee and migrant rights researcher at Human Rights Watch. “Israel has blatantly violated its obligation to ensure Palestinians can return home, razing virtually everything in large areas.”

While the Arabs of Palestine were completely unprepared for war, and the majority was unarmed and in a defensive position, the Zionist Hagana, Irgun and Stern gangs launched coordinated offensive strikes against Arab civilians in the three main cities, Haifa, Jerusalem and Jaffa, as well as in the Palestinian countryside. Organised massacres were committed and they destroyed homes in order to force the Palestinian Arabs to leave.

The massacres did not begin in 1948. On the night of 15 July, 1947, a Hagana force entered the citrus grove owned by Rashid Abu Laban, located between Jaffa and Petah Tikva. A family of seven people was sleeping inside their home and nine other workers were sleeping outside it. The attacking force set explosive devices and opened fire, killing 11 Arabs, including a woman and her three daughters.

On 29 September, 1947, the Hagana also attacked the Haifa market, destroying Ahmed Diab Al-Julani’s shop with explosive devices. On 12 December, 1947, an Irgun force wearing British military uniforms entered the town of Tira in the Haifa district, killing 12 Arabs and wounding 6 others. The day after this massacre, the Irgun gang dropped bombs on Arab gatherings at the Damascus Gate in Jerusalem, killing 4 Arabs. On the same day, the same Zionist gang attacked an Arab cafe in the city of Jaffa, on King George Street, and killed 6 Arabs.

According to statistical figures, on 13 December, 21 Arab civilians were killed in all Palestinian cities as a result of the organised Zionist massacres, and the Zionist gangs continued their organised massacres in the various Palestinian villages and cities.

The biggest massacre was on 30 December, 1947, when a group from the Irgun gang threw two cans of milk containing bombs at a group of about a hundred Palestinian workers who were standing in front of the oil refinery in Haifa to register their names for work. Six Arabs were killed and 46 others were wounded in the attack. Meanwhile, in the clashes that took place inside the refinery, the Arabs killed 41 Jews in self-defence and wounded 48 others. Until this moment, Israel continues to Judaise the Palestinian places with new names.

Their colonialism appears to be more “benevolent,” more “philanthropic,” a system with which they rule simply by getting their potential victims to accept their friendly offers of economic “aid,” and other tempting gifts, that they dangle in front of the newly-independent African nations, whose economies are experiencing great difficulties. During the 19th century, when the masses here in Africa were largely illiterate it was easy for European imperialists to rule them with “force and fear,” but in this present era of enlightenment the African masses are awakening, and it is impossible to hold them in check now with the antiquated methods of the 19th century.

The imperialists, therefore, have been compelled to devise new methods. Since they can no longer force or frighten the masses into submission, they must devise modern methods that will enable them to maneuver the African masses into willing submission.

The modern 20th century weapon of neo-imperialism is “dollarism.” The Zionists have mastered the science of dollarism: the ability to come posing as a friend and benefactor, bearing gifts and all other forms of economic aid and offers of technical assistance. Thus, the power and influence of Zionist Israel in many of the newly “independent” African nations has fast-become even more unshakeable than that of the 18th century European colonialists…and this new kind of Zionist colonialism differs only in form and method, but never in motive or objective.

And the continued low standard of living in the Arab world has been skillfully used by the Zionist propagandists to make it appear to the Africans that the Arab leaders are not intellectually or technically qualified to lift the living standard of their people…thus, indirectly inducing Africans to turn away from the Arabs and towards the Israelis for teachers and technical assistance.

If the “religious” claim of the Zionists is true that they were to be led to the promised land by their messiah, and Israel’s present occupation of Arab Palestine is the fulfillment of that prophesy: where is their messiah whom their prophets said would get the credit for leading them there? It was [United Nations mediator] Ralph Bunche who “negotiated” the Zionists into possession of Occupied Palestine! Is Ralph Bunche the messiah of Zionism? If Ralph Bunche is not their messiah, and their messiah has not yet come, then what are they doing in Palestine ahead of their messiah?

Did the Zionists have the legal or moral right to invade Arab Palestine, uproot its Arab citizens from their homes and seize all Arab property for themselves just based on the “religious” claim that their forefathers lived there thousands of years ago? Only a thousand years ago the Moors lived in Spain. Oh, that fucking JEW: National Security Study Memorandum 200: Implications of Worldwide Population Growth for U.S. Security and Overseas Interests (NSSM200), also known as the “Kissinger Report“, was a national security directive completed on December 10, 1974 by the United States National Security Council under the direction of Henry Kissinger following initial orders from President of the United States Richard Nixon.

NSSM200 was reworked and adopted as official United States policy through NSDM 314 by President Gerald Ford on November 26, 1975.[1] It was initially classified for over a decade and has been part of the public record since 1985. The memorandum and subsequent policies developed from the report were observed as a way the United States could encourage human population planning to slow down global population growth in rapidly growing populations of Lesser Developed Countries. The document describes US security interests in natural resource supplies as a motivator for assisting LDCs in curbing population growth rates. It contemplated that situations arising from scarcity of food and other economic preconditions for stable growth in LDCs could lead to political instability which could put in jeopardy supplies to industrialized countries of key minerals and other resources for their growth.

But Nixon’s chief interest in population control was its supposed value as a Cold War weapon. The president charged Henry Kissinger, his National Security Advisor and Secretary of State, with conducting a secret study on the role of population control measures in the fight against global communism. Kissinger pulled together a group of experts drawn from the National Security Council (NSC), the Central Intelligence Agency, the Department of Defense, the Department of State, USAID, and other agencies to study the question. The result was issued on December 10, 1974 in the form of the classified NSC document titled “Implications of Worldwide Population Growth for U.S. Security and Overseas Interests.” The document — known as National Security Study Memorandum 200 (NSSM 200), or simply as the Kissinger Report — represented the encoding of Malthusian dogma as the strategic doctrine of the United States.

NSSM 200 was declassified in 1989 and so is now available for scrutiny. Examining the document, what is apparent is the Nietzschean mindset on the part of its authors, who (implicitly embracing the communist line) clearly regarded the newborn masses of the world as America’s likely enemies, rather than her friends, and as potential obstacles to the exploitation of the world’s wealth, rather than as customers, workers, and business partners participating together with America in a grand team effort to grow and advance the world economy. The memo made the case for a population control effort that is global in scope but not traceable back to its wealthy supporters.

On November 26, 1975, NSSM 200 was formally adopted by the Ford administration. A follow-up memo issued in 1976 by the NSC called for the United States to use control of food supplies to impose population control on a global scale. It further noted the value of using dictatorial power and military force as means to coerce Third World peoples into submission to population control measures, adding: “In some cases, strong direction has involved incentives such as payment to acceptors for sterilization, or disincentives such as giving low priorities in the allocation of housing or schooling to those with larger families. Such direction is the sine qua non of an effective program.”

“President Trump, according to a source familiar with the details, has already promised Netanyahu and Minister Ron Dermer that if they agree to a ceasefire and the withdrawal of IDF forces from the Gaza Strip, he will support Israel retroactively if it decides to return to fighting and violate the ceasefire.”

Alternatively, Israel might choose to renew fighting after the initial six-week truce period is over, making it appear to be in full compliance with the ceasefire. They can play it either way and might even have a commitment from Washington to advance preparations for a joint military action against Iran.

As a third incentive for Israel, the Trump Administration has reportedly agreed to remove commercial US sanctions that were initiated in November 2021 on the Israeli spy company NSO Group and its “maliciously targetable” Pegasus spyware that “has been used to hack US government officials and other top level politicians, peace and human rights activists, international lawyers, journalists and more – and which is said to have played a key role in Saudi Arabia’s murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.” Biden administration officials claimed at the time that the move represents the first time that the Treasury Department has sanctioned people or entities for the misuse of spyware. The software “allows a user to infiltrate electronic devices through zero-click attacks that require no user interaction or opening of the virus for the spyware to infect the device. The spyware, which has been used in dozens of countries, has allowed for the unauthorized extraction of data, geolocation tracking and access to personal information on compromised devices.”

A list of 50,000 phone numbers of interest to NSO ‘Pegasus’ software clients has leaked and was published in France. NSO’s founders were members of the Israeli military’s top secret electronic surveillance Unit 8200 and NSO is believed to be currently a front for the Israeli military and Mossad. According to ex-8200 whistleblowers, the unit’s members used to mark an ‘X’ on their headset for each assassination their surveillance had enabled.

An Amnesty International report and also an investigation by the Washington Post and 16 other media groups revealed that clients using NSO’s ‘Pegasus’ military-grade spyware include many governments known to conduct surveillance of their own citizens. NSO claims that Pegasus is only used by legitimate agencies to spy on ‘terrorists and serious criminals’, but the leaked list “includes numbers of journalists, human-rights activists, heads of state, royals, prime ministers – and the fiancée of murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, as well as of murdered Mexican journalist Cecilio Pineda Birto.”

The investigation by the Post, titled the Pegasus Project, identified and verified the names of several Arab royal family members, 64 business executives, 85 human rights activists and more than 600 politicians and government officials. According to the Washington Post, the software was used in multiple ‘attempted and successful hacks.’ The Post was particularly sensitive to the threat as 189 journalists were on the list. In practical terms, the “legalization” of Pegasus means that the FBI and NSA will be able to use it to increase its spying on American citizens, which will mean a seeking out of critics of US foreign policy, and one would not be surprised to see it employed to root out critics of Israel, which will be regarded as antisemitism, increasingly viewed as a major crime by US administrations.

The freeing up of Pegasus is a big deal as it is a major money earner and source of top-level intelligence for the Israeli government and its security services. If my instincts on this are correct, Israel will strike as hard a bargain on the ceasefire as it possibly can, creating conditions or interpretations that will enable it to back out and resume military operations after claiming mythical violations on the part of Hamas. It will be able to resume hostilities while still obtaining the release a number of its hostages, which would be a boost for the Netanyahu government. Trump will shy away from exposing the Israeli false flag having made his point that he is a peace maker and in charge. The un-sanctioning and Congressional embrace of the Israeli settlers will also help Netanyahu politically. Interestingly, Israeli media and its public have reacted negatively to the news that a ceasefire is imminent, claiming that it is a “defeat.”

In reality, Israel could, as ever, be the winner in what is taking place, with no real pushback from Washington. When it comes to dealing with Israel, Trump might talk tough but could wind up going down the same path as Joe Biden. So will there be a real ceasefire? Maybe not.

The well-known Shabbat zemer “Mah Yedidut” states, “Chafatzecha assurim, v’gam lachashov cheshbonot/ hirhurim mutarim, ul’shadeich habanot—[On Shabbat] your non-Shabbat desires are prohibited, as is performing business calculations/ but pleasant thoughts are permitted, even making matches for the daughters.”

The question is—what types of “thoughts” are permitted on Shabbat?

There are several Torah sources that define thought. One such source is found in Tosafot in Masechet Gittin 31a, which discusses separating terumot and ma’aserot (tithes) by “thought” on Shabbat. Can one actually separate terumot and ma’aserot simply by thinking about it? Is thought considered an action? There is a machloket Acharonim on how to understand this Tosafot. According to Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach it is forbidden to separate terumot and ma’aserot in this manner [on Shabbat]. Thus, according to his view, thought is equivalent to action. Based on this, I don’t think BCI would be permitted for general use on Shabbat; however, if we’re talking about an individual who is paralyzed and BCI [can enable him to move his limbs on Shabbat], perhaps there is room for discussion.

RZ: Can AI help us perform mitzvot? What about teaching a robot to do nikkur achorayim (the removal of certain large blood vessels, cheilev [prohibited fats] and the gid hanasheh [sciatic nerve] after a kosher animal is properly slaughtered and inspected)? What about teaching a robot to check articles of clothing for traces of shatnez? Do you see a problem with this?

RR: I don’t see why checking for the presence of shatnez—wool and linen mixed together in an article of clothing—would be a problem, since it’s a technical process. No special kavanot (concentration of the mind in performance of a religious act) are required. Furthermore, nowhere in the Torah is it written that a human being must do the checking. Similarly, a robot should be able to do nikkur achorayim; however, the actual shechitah (the Jewish religious and humane practice of slaughtering animals) must be done by a God-fearing Jew. The Shulchan Aruch (Yoreh Deah 2:11) rules that shechitah is only acceptable if it is done by a human being. Thus it should be clear that shechitah may not be done by a robot. See also siman 7:1 where the Shulchan Aruch explicitly states that shechitah may not be done by a machine that is not directly operated by a human.

Could a computer check the sharpness of the shochet’s (ritual slaughterer) blade? The chalif, the knife of a shochet, is his most important tool. It must be exquisitely smooth and exceedingly sharp. The Shulchan Aruch states that one must check the knife b’kavanat halev (with mindful concentration) twelve times (YD 18:9). A laser could be used to check the sharpness of the knife but cannot serve as the the final arbiter because a human being has to do the checking. A laser, can, however, issue a warning to the schochtim indicating the knife is too dull.

RZ: Video cameras are used for certain aspects of kashrut supervision. For example, on a dairy farm, they are used to verify that the milk produced is cow’s milk and that it was not extracted in violation of Shabbat, et cetera. If a robot could be programmed to learn what’s important in a kosher kitchen, such as not mixing meat and milk and using only kosher-certified products, would it be acceptable to use robotic mashgichim?

RR: Generally speaking, there is no requirement that a mashgiach has to be physically present. The halachah wants to ensure that a proprietor does not do anything improper. The halachic requirement is “mirtat,” which means that the proprietor has to be afraid that he will be caught and will suffer the consequences if he tries to do something improper. Assuming a robot is observing and recording what is taking place, and a human is monitoring the cameras, I think that would be acceptable. But a human being must be monitoring, because if there are no consequences [for violating kashrut standards], what’s the point of the robot?

I told him, “You have a serious problem if you cannot be alone with yourself for twenty-four hours. Shabbat is your savior.” On Shabbat, you say no to your computer, no to your phone, no to the Internet; but through Shabbat you open doors to yourself, to your soul, to your family and to Hashem.

Having finally read the book myself last year, Lipstadt’s charges, and the wider uproar, look all the more preposterous in retrospect. Despite all that Rosenberger had done for the company, the price severely undervalued his shares in Porsche. “It was held against me that a pennant [certification] or the like as a Jew-free company would not be given as long as I was a shareholder…I don’t accuse Mr. Porsche and Mr. Piëch at any rate of personal anti-Semitism,” Rosenberger later contended. “But…they used my membership as a Jew to get rid of me cheaply.” Porsche and Piëch denied the allegation. Still, regardless of motive, the duo’s acquisition of Rosenberger’s Porsche stake was an “Aryanization,” plain as day.

On September 23, 1935, after almost three weeks in the Gestapo prison, Rosenberger was transferred to Kislau, a concentration camp south of Heidelberg. After four days of beatings, he was suddenly let go. Baron von Veyder-Malberg, Rosenberger’s successor at Porsche, had intervened with the Gestapo in Karlsruhe, successfully lobbying for his release. But Rosenberger still had to pay the Gestapo 53.40 reichsmarks [$455] for his time in “protective custody,” as the euphemism went. Despite later claims to the contrary, Ferdinand Porsche and Anton Piëch did nothing to secure their cofounder’s freedom. Via his lawyer, Rosenberger begged Porsche to help save his life, but Porsche was too busy hobnobbing at the Spanish Grand Prix, outside Bilbao. (sources)

On July 23, 1938, Rosenberger wrote to Piëch, who was also the company’s tough legal counsel, suggesting two ways to part amicably: $12,000 [or about $240,000] to start over in the United States or a transfer of Porsche’s American patent license to Rosenberger. Adding insult to Aryanization, Anton Piëch coldly rejected the proposal [on August 24, 1938]. “My company does not recognize your claims under any circumstance and rejects them for a lack of legal basis.” That same month, the Gestapo began the process of revoking Rosenberger’s German citizenship. It was time for him to leave Europe.

The researchers who worked at Unit 731, the biological and chemical warfare research and development unit, were given immunity in exchange for their research data. Unit 731 included factories filled with humans, tested with various diseases, as well as field tests on civilians of the Soviet Union and China. Imperial Japan had aspirations to develop operative tools of biological warfare, one that was prohibited after World War I. Using alive human captives, the Japanese scientists of the medical profession gathered data on the progression of the diseases until the “human guinea pigs” collapsed. Most of these scientists lived peacefully after WWII, with a few of them having to go through the Khabarovsk Trial, which was deemed by the West as communist propaganda.


Most of the horrors on Unit 731 had been hearsays and rumors until recently with the passing of the Freedom of Information Act. This book is based on documents found in the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration, Russian archival documents, and translations of the Khabarovsk Trial to paint a complete picture of the cover-up of the atrocious act of Unit 731. Readers could expect to questions themselves with this evidence: Should war crimes be covered up in the name of national interest?

Japan’s Cabinet on Friday approve a record 7.95 trillion yen or $55.9 billion defence budget for Fiscal Year 2024, which begins on April 1 next year. The amount represents a 16.5 percent increase from FY2023’s budget of 6.8 trillion yen or $47.7 billon with the budget for each fiscal year to increase until it reaches 8.9 trillion yen or $62.5 billion in FY2027 thus making each fiscal year defence budget until 2027 continuously the highest ever recorded.

The Japanese government had set a goal of spending 43 trillion yen or $302 billion on defence in the timeframe of 2023-2027. The Cabinet also approved a loosening of export restrictions allowing Japan to supply complete lethal weapons and munitions to other countries under certain conditions.

In line with that goal, the new budget proposes funding seven main areas of effort:

  • “Stand-off defense capabilities,” especially precision long-range weapons. The request is for $5.1 billion. Almost half of that, $2.2 billion, is for a small satellite constellation to provide tracking and targeting for this burgeoning counterstrike capability.
  • “Comprehensive air and missile defense capabilities” to counter North Korean, Russian and Chinese missiles and other threats. The request is for $1.7 billion.
  • “Unmanned asset defense capabilities,” requested at $850 million.
  • “Cross-domain operational capabilities” in space, cyber and EW. While the budget documents don’t provide an easy total for this section, the biggest item under electronic warfare are $344 million for an RC-2 signals intelligence aircraft plus $100 million for its avionics and related items. The budget also includes $97 million for development of an EW aircraft.
  • “Command and control and intelligence-related functions,” requested at $4.4 billion.
  • “Maneuvering and deployment capability” to help turn Japan into a power projection military. The request is for $3.9 billion.
  • “Sustainability and resiliency.” The request includes $6.4 billion for ammunition, including 155mm shells, as well as roughly

In addition to those broad categories, the defense force plans to request $871 million to buy eight more Lockheed Martin F-35As and $423 million for three more F-35Bs.

Tokyo also plans to keep working on its advanced fighter program being developed with the UK and Italy, requesting $787 million to do engineering and design work on the Global Combat Air Program.

Four: Some scientists have revealed that most whites are unable to produce melanin because their pineal glands are often calcification or non-functioning. Pineal calcification rates with Africans are five to 15 percent, Asians 15 to 25 percent and Europeans 60 to 80 percent. This is the chemical basis for the cultural differences between Blacks and whites.

Five: Melanin endows Blacks with greater mental, physical and spiritual abilities–something which cannot be measured based on Eurocentric standards.

We can readily admit that an abused child is less likely to achieve academically than a child that has grown up in a supportive atmosphere. Black children, whether rich or poor, grow up with an added abuse which white children never have to face. Imagine the message that misguided information like The Bell Curve would send to a Black child who is trying to find her place in school. It’s degrading, belittling and outrageously false.

Attacks on Black people such as those in The Bell Curve are not unique. Black children face this abuse daily through television shows, jokes aired on the radio, textbooks with truncated history, etc. Liberal whites underestimate the damage which racism causes on the minds of Black children, and conservative whites know all too well how to enlarge that damage. No matter how rich or supportive a Black person’s home might be, by the time she is ready to take the SAT or apply to college, she has struggled far more extensively than any white person of the same social and economic background.

In addition, it is completely naive to say that Blacks have achieved economic equality with whites. It seems that whites have grown tired of hearing about racism. So, some have turned to measures such as The Bell Curve to relieve themselves of blame.

It’s just ridiculous. Black people are not asking for political correctness, but truthfulness, fairness and an end to this abuse.

A legacy of poverty, lack of access to healthy food, health care, living wage employment, inadequate housing, and race based advertising and targeting of minorities by food companies, or what are referred to as social determinants, explain these health disparities, not race. On a good day life expectancy in African American communities burdened with poverty is up to 15 less than average. And today is not a good day.

The highest rates of obesity, diabetes, and chronic disease are found in the African American, Hispanic, Native American, and poor communities. In the last decade, type 2 diabetes rates have tripled in Native American children, doubled in African American children, and increased 50 percent in Hispanic youth. Native Americans, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders, and Asians are also twice as likely as Caucasians to get diabetes. And African Americans are more than four times as likely to have kidney failure and three and a half times as likely to suffer amputations as whites.

Why are minorities suffering so much? An insidious but subtle form of racism is harming their health and their communities, but few, if any, are asking the tough questions. It’s a topic I address in depth in Food Fix.

Food & racism

When we talk of racism we think of white supremacists, police brutality, job discrimination, limited opportunities, and hate speech, but rarely do we think of food. Hundreds of thousands of African Americans, Hispanics, and the poor are killed every year by an invisible form of racism, a silent and insidious injustice. Here’s how:

You may have heard of food deserts—where the closest grocery store is more than a mile away and it’s hard to find fresh fruits and vegetables or other healthy food. About 23 million Americans live in these food deserts. But the problem isn’t only food deserts. It is also food swamps, communities filled with fast-food chains and bodegas plying highly processed addictive foods. Food deserts imply a natural phenomenon, like an unfortunate desert somehow just occurred. Nothing is less true. It’s hard to find fresh produce but easy to find gallon cups of soda and other sugar-loaded beverages, and fast-food chains peddling burgers, fries, and fried chicken are on almost every street corner. These toxic food swamps are more predictive of obesity and illness than food deserts.

Black communities have almost twice as many fast-food restaurants as white neighborhoods. Only 5 percent of African Americans have a healthy diet. That is a big change from the 1960s, when African American diets were twice as healthy as average diets, with more fruits, vegetables, fiber, and good fats.

Perhaps a better term is food apartheid, an embedded social and political form of discrimination. The history of sugar is closely linked to slavery. The slave trade served the growth of sugar production. Legal American slavery is over (although slavery still occurs on some farms with migrant workers). But today sugar, especially in its new form, high-fructose corn syrup, is connected to a new kind of oppression—food oppression, which makes people of color sick, fat, and disabled. It is a form of apartheid in which the poor and minorities live in areas that lack healthy food and have an overabundance of foods that can kill them.

Why this matters

How did this happen? It’s a combination of factors: poverty, social disenfranchisement, racial targeting by the food industry, and government subsidies and programs that support the most profitable foods for the food industry—the very foods that also happen to be the most harmful to our health. This form of internalized racism is not as obvious as limiting voters’ rights and employment opportunities, the bombing of churches, or hate speech and hate crimes. But it is far more pernicious and destructive, in part because most of the victims don’t know it’s a problem.

Of all deaths, 1.1 percent are caused by gun violence. Seventy thousand people die every year from the opioid epidemic. Those problems are real and tragic and need to end. But 70 percent of deaths, or more than 1.7 million deaths, a year are caused by chronic disease such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, and stroke—mostly the result of our toxic food system. More African Americans, Hispanics, and poor people are killed by bad food than anything else.

Even when food is available to disadvantaged communities, fresh whole foods can be expensive, which leads to the purchase of cheap, unhealthy junk food. Those who are on limited incomes struggle to get enough food, so when the decision is between facing hunger and eating cheap processed food, the choice is inevitable. Yet we remain silent about the role of the food system killing millions of Americans.

Food companies use cultural icons to influence minorities. Do you think LeBron James actually drinks Sprite? McDonald’s uses Serena and Venus Williams and Enrique Iglesias in their TV ads to attract black and Hispanic consumers. Is a Big Mac, fries, and a Coke really Serena’s pregame meal? No matter, their dollars are well spent. Race-based advertising works.

Big Food’s marketing ploys are amplified even more for minority children. In 2019, the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity published a damning report entitled, “Increasing Disparities in Advertising Unhealthy Food to Hispanic and Black Youth.” The big food companies target black and Hispanic youth with their least nutritious products, including fast foods, candy, sugary drinks, and snacks. From 2013 to 2017, food advertising on black-targeted TV increased by 50 percent. Black teens viewed 119 percent more junk-food-related ads—mostly for soda and candy—than white teens. The top ads came from Nestlé, Yum! Brands (like KFC and Taco Bell), Mars, McDonald’s, and General Mills. The average teen saw more than 6,000 junk-food ads a year just on television.

On top of that, our government is complicit in the perpetuation of these behaviors and the support of the production and sale of the very foods it tells Americans not to eat in its Dietary Guidelines. What may shock some is that government-guaranteed loan programs support fast-food outlets, which are far more prevalent in poor communities of color. Why do government loans pay for the expansion of food that kills Americans?

This oppression must end

The work of transforming this system of oppression must come from multiple sectors—changes in government policies, regulation, nonprofits creating local programs to educate and empower people, and grassroots efforts of citizens working to change their communities.

Imagine if black church leaders (or any affected minority group) collectively joined in a campaign to link the struggles of minority communities to food, to food apartheid, to racial targeting by the food industry, to the invisible form of oppression that keeps communities down, and created a call to action to change all that. They might follow the example of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Martin Luther King Jr.’s church in Atlanta, that started a 2-acre urban garden where parishioners participate in growing food for the local community. Or Ron Finley, the Gangsta Gardener from South Central Los Angeles, started curbside gardens, turned lawns into food forests, and created raised-bed gardens in dilapidated vacant lots, helping gang members, ex-convicts, and drug dealers find a way out of their struggles.

In the Bronx, Karen Washington founded Black Urban Growers to support black urban and rural farmers and helped turn abandoned lots in the Bronx into thriving community gardens. These are a few of the stories of hope and empowerment that I write about in Food Fix, as well as Food Tank, Soul Fire Farm, Black Church Food Security Network, and The Bigger Picture Project. These pockets of redemption and innovation are happening all across the country; they are models for breaking the cycle of food injustice. The massacre itself occurred on Sept. 11, after a small group of the Mormons approached the wagon train bearing a white flag and offered the emigrants safe escort away from the Native American attackers if they would leave behind their belongings as appeasement. The travelers took them up on this offer and began walking, and then their escorts turned on them, killing them all, except 17 children ages 6 and under whose testimony, the attackers thought, wouldn’t be believed. These children were placed in Mormon homes, and only reunited with their relatives a few years later, after the U.S. Army undertook a search to find them.

That massacre and its aftermath would make a good subject for a longer treatment, but making that project would be a dicey choice, given the politics around the history, and also nobody would want to watch the result because it would be too awful. (The 2007 movie September Dawn, with Jon Voight, tried this, but was awful for different reasons, while in the 2022 miniseries Under the Banner of Heaven, the massacre is a B plot in the finale.) Berg and Smith try to solve the problem by diluting the massacre’s violence and spreading it around, across plot lines, until it seems to be everywhere. In their version, instead of being drawn out over days of siege, the attack comes quickly, out of the blue, with one female emigrant cut off in the middle of small talk by an arrow to the forehead. Yes, we see many people dying, and it’s intense—but because we’re following the point of view of Sara, who escapes, we don’t spend that much time in the scene itself. And you don’t see all those older-than-6 emigrant kids get killed. (You do see one die. The Mormon who kills the little boy immediately rips off his hood and throws up.) In the show the Mormon attackers let a group of women live, and give them to their Native American collaborators as captives; historically, no women were allowed to escape the violence.

The growing protest efforts against Israel’s war on Gaza have now spawned a cyberspace movement that has erupted in the past few days, targeting celebrities who are seen as being insensitive towards, or even supportive of, the death and destruction in the Palestinian enclave.

The campaign that took off after the Met Gala on May 6 has earned the names: Blockout 2024, celebrity block list and digitine. The idea is to block famous celebrities on social media networks such as Instagram, X and TikTok.

Actor Henry Winkler is the latest celebrity to spread a viral internet theory that the fires affecting Los Angeles are the result of an “arsonist.”

In the hours after Winkler posted his wildfire theory, at least one person was taken into custody for arson in connection with the Kenneth Fire, which broke out earlier in the day in the West Hollywood Hills, according to NewsNation reporter Brian Entin. Police have also reportedly shut down Victory Trailhead hiking area, which has been declared a crime scene.

Tall, broad-shouldered soldiers donning masks and sunglasses had their guns at the ready, and a mini-drone built at Ariel University, an Israeli school located in the occupied West Bank, went up in the air, flying high as the press snapped photos.

This was not war, but one of the many demos held at the ISDEF expo, an annual June event that attracts thousands of security officials and professionals interested in weapons. Arms fairs in Israel showcase the latest products the profitable Israeli weapons industry manufactures — and the demos are the perfect place to show those products off.

As the demo was beginning, Jonas Zelken, a presenter at the weapons fair, looked on as the soldiers — who formerly served in an Israeli counterterrorism unit — threw a mock grenade into a model home in what looked like enemy territory in an Arab country. Zelken eagerly explained to attendees that they were seeing “beautiful” soldiers setting up a mock communications base during battle and a “sexy” drone. He also reeled off the names of companies whose products the soldiers were showcasing at the Israeli arms expo: Spuhr, a Swedish company that makes rifle mounts for sight; InteliComm, an American company that produces communications equipment; and Netline, an Israeli company that manufactures a jammer to prevent improvised explosive devices from going off.

The US defence contractor L3Harris is in talks to take over NSO Group’s surveillance technology, in a possible deal that would give an American company control over one of the world’s most sophisticated and controversial hacking tools.

Multiple sources confirmed that discussions were centred on a sale of the Israeli company’s core technology – or code – as well as a possible transfer of NSO personnel to L3Harris. But any agreement still faces significant hurdles, including requiring the blessing of the US and Israeli governments, which have not yet given the green light to a deal.

Research published in the Lancet medical journal estimates that the death toll in Gaza during the first nine months of the Israel-Hamas war was about 40% higher than numbers recorded by the Palestinian territory’s health ministry.

The peer-reviewed statistical analysis was conducted by academics at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Yale University and other institutions, using a statistical method called capture-recapture analysis.

The researchers sought to assess the death toll from Israel’s air and ground campaign in Gaza between October 2023 and the end of June 2024, estimating 64,260 deaths due to traumatic injury during this period. The study said 59.1% were women, children and people over the age of 65. It did not provide an estimate of Palestinian combatants among the dead.

Up to 30 June last year, the health ministry in Gaza reported a death toll of 37,877 in the war, which began on 7 October 2023 after the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel in which 1,200 people were killed and more than 250 taken hostages.

According to Palestinian health officials, a total of more than 46,000 people have been killed in the Gaza war, from a prewar population of about 2.3 million.

It has not been possible for international media to independently verify the death toll in Gaza as Israel does not allow foreign journalists into the territory.

The study used death toll data from the health ministry, an online survey launched by the ministry for Palestinians to report relatives’ deaths, and social media obituaries to estimate that there were between 55,298 and 78,525 deaths from traumatic injuries in Gaza up to 30 June 2024.

The gleaming white skin and hairless head. The emaciated body carried out on a stretcher. The worshipful natives on every side, fulfilling even the most capricious commands. The almost spectral character of Kurtz, from Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, seems like one of the author’s most improbable figures. We never so much as learn his first name. But was he based on a real person?

Many scholars think so. Over the decades, research has led to viable prototypes in several members of King Leopold’s colonial government in the Congo—the setting for the 1899 novel—and other individuals Conrad might have encountered while traveling through that region.

Three years ago, I stumbled across a potential flesh-and-bone Kurtz of my own, in an unlikely place, and without consciously looking. I was just beginning to draft my new novel, The Last Bookaneer, about rival literary pirates infiltrating Robert Louis Stevenson’s life in the Samoan Islands in 1891. To prepare my approach to Stevenson’s character, I reread Heart of Darkness in search of parallels between the ways in which Conrad’s immortal character, Kurtz, “goes native” and Stevenson’s striking experience as a European in tropical exile. — Where Did Kurtz Come From?
