And I have every right to be. As a current UAF doctoral student and graduate of both UAA and UAF, I am devastated by the recent decisions made by our Board of Regents. Their 11th-hour vote earlier this year to remove all mentions of diversity, equity, inclusion and other associated terms from university websites and public-facing materials felt like a gut punch to me and many of my fellow students.
There continues to be little to no public explanation, with only quiet whisperings of financial concerns, as to why such a vote and subsequent action were necessary, given that the directive to do so was an unenforceable executive order that reeks of federal overreach.
Now, some may argue that the Board of Regents’ actions do not alter the actual work being done at our state’s public universities. While I may agree to a point, the regents’ actions signal something greater than just compliance with an unenforceable and state-rights-threatening executive order.
And that signal became clearer with the recent cancellation of millions of dollars in federal support for academic research, Alaska Native students, and the Indigenous studies program.

Jasmin: I work with communities that haven’t traditionally been heard in conservation, including fishing communities like where my family is from in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. One of my big projects is a local ecological knowledge study that I’m doing with my dad, who is a fisherman in Myrtle Beach. I also run Minorities in Shark Sciences, affectionately called MISS, which was founded in 2020 through a tweet. It was during a time of a lot of unrest and political activation when there was a big upswell of the Black Lives Matter movement. There was a hashtag #BlackinNature going around with people posting pictures of themselves enjoying nature. It was this really beautiful movement on Twitter to say Black people should be able to exist in nature without fearing that we’re going to be harassed, or have the police called on us, or shot.
I came across a picture of one of my future co-founders, Carlee, doing shark research, and I got really excited because I’d never seen anyone that looked like me doing shark research. I felt like I was the only one. I responded to her tweet: You’re a Black girl that studies sharks? I do too! We had our other two co-founders come into the conversation and say: Black girls that study sharks? We’re here! It started out as DMs joking that we should start a club, and it turned into a nonprofit, a whole movement, which four years later now has 500-plus members in 33 different countries. It’s pretty wild that the call was made and the answer was overwhelming.
If you aren’t hearing all voices, you aren’t getting the whole picture, and therefore you can’t actually tackle conservation problems.
We have a vision where seeing a person of color studying the ocean is not weird, where it’s normalized. We preserve biodiversity with sharks, but we also preserve diversity among scientists who study sharks and do conservation because we feel true innovation comes from having people with a diversity of experiences and backgrounds. If you aren’t hearing all voices, you aren’t getting the whole picture, and therefore you can’t actually tackle conservation problems. We’re all about engaging people, whether as scientists working in the field or as community leaders using science as a tool to protect the resources of their community.
We also have an expansive view of what science is—beyond what has traditionally been seen as science. We want people to have the resources, knowledge, and tools that they need to engage in the protection of our oceans because it impacts all of us. We live on a blue planet, and if the ocean ecosystems were to collapse, you’d feel it. Everyone should be part of the conversation, not just a select few powerful people. They shouldn’t be the only ones making the decisions because they don’t have the whole picture.
Jasmin was open with me on my show, and we had a robust discussion around not so much the specifics of her work as a scientists — toothed sharks and hammerheads — but around REPRESENTATION.

Explain the parallel you draw between the public’s perception of sharks and Black people.
Sharks have a bad reputation. They can’t catch a break in the media. There might be a shark bite and maybe it was a little leopard shark, but what would be shown was a picture of a big, scary great white.
And similarly, in police brutality incidents, when somebody died, what got shown was the most thugged-out picture of this person. Yet people who commit very heinous crimes who are not Black get a graduation photo or something. I started seeing that, Ah, this is the same thing, and maybe we need to use similar approaches to tackling both of these issues.
Her memoir is out, at the young age of 30:
The foundation to her science pursuits is indeed rogue in the many times siloed and sacrosanct arena of science.
“Science is supposed to be objective, and people will say to leave the other things about you at the door,” she says. “I don’t agree with that. Our stories, our ancestors, what we care about, our culture—all of those things make us who we are. Science is done by people, and people are biased, so we may as well bring all of our perceptions and realities and experiences into what we’re doing.” If people can do that, she says, it can help change the status quo.
“Do science!” she says. “And if someone tells you that you can’t, don’t listen to them.”
As is true with most memoirs, hers took her to new places, and her own imposter syndrome kicked in — “Who, me, a 20-something young person who has a pretty good life, why would anyone want to read MY story?”
Those are not her words, but her sentiments, and I have seen and heard the very same thing from older adults, in their 70s, who again self-efface their lives. Jasmin’s story, the memoir, is vital for other Black youth, both boys and girls, to get an idea of what success looks like from the STEM world, a la minorities.
“It’s interesting to take a bird’s-eye view of your life and think about the sum of its parts and how they led to this moment,” she explains. “It’s cathartic. It gives everything some purpose or meaning.”
It’s funny that when I dive in Mexico or Belize or the Caribbean, I am the minority, and not just the dive masters and boat tenders are people of color, but so are the scientists. In the USA, Jim Crow 3.0 is hitting us hard. Amazing how that Black President Obama lambasted African Americans for being lazy and disengaged, and now we have full front sadism with Trump and ironically his Jewish General, Stephen Miller.
While Graham has achieved plenty of success in her career already, the road there was marked by potholes and detours. In Sharks Don’t Sink, she writes candidly about her longtime struggles with anxiety and being consistently underestimated because of the color of her skin.
One example: a white teacher who asked, “Are you lost?” on Graham’s first day at her magnet school, implying that because she was Black, she shouldn’t be there. She didn’t meet another Black marine biologist until she was 22 years old, and in graduate school, an older male researcher essentially stole her work without consequence, leading Graham to leave the program. “I wonder if this would be happening to me if I was a white male,” she writes.

I do what’s called “kickass sociology.” I’ve tried to pattern my work after a kickass Black sociologist: W.E.B. DuBois, who showed how someone can be a teacher, scholar, researcher, author, social critic and activist. He helped to found the NAACP [in 1909]—the oldest and largest civil rights organization in the U.S.—and he did some of the first empirical research in sociology.
Black people face some of the highest cancer and asthma rates in the U.S., statistics that are inarguably linked to the environment in which someone lives, works and plays. But until Robert D. Bullard began collecting data in the 1970s, no one fully understood how a person’s surroundings can affect their health. And no one, not even Bullard, knew how segregated the most polluted places really were.
Bullard was the first scientist to publish systematic research on the links between race and exposure to pollution, which he documented for a 1979 lawsuit. “This is before everyone had [geographic information system] mapping, before iPads, iPhones, laptops, Google,” he says. “This is doing research way back with a hammer and a chisel.”
In 2021 Texas Southern University in Houston established the Robert D. Bullard Center for Environmental and Climate Justice, where Bullard now serves as executive director. He has written 18 books on the topic, and his work helped to launch a movement. Environmental justice—the idea that everyone has the right to a clean and healthy environment, no matter their race or class—has been embraced by advocates around the world and is influencing international climate negotiations. Scientific American asked Bullard about his work and its impact in the U.S. and beyond.

U.S. rivers are experiencing unprecedented and unexpectedly intense warming
A new analysis is the first in-depth study of riverine heat waves, which are worsening as the planet warms due to climate change.
“The way that we use water, the way we manage those resources can have an impact on heat waves,” said Jonathan Walter, a research scientist at UC Davis’ Center for Watershed Sciences, who was not involved in this research. “Assuming adequate amounts of water in a reservoir, we might be able to release water in such a way that downstream temperatures would be somewhat cooled and prevent these hot and stressful temperatures.”
Heat waves have been studied extensively in oceans and lakes, but until now researchers only had limited information on how higher temperatures were affecting streams.
Satellite data drives research of heat in oceans and lakes. Studying river temperatures is more difficult because it’s reliant on stream-gauge sensors that are often in and out of service, leaving data gaps that can be hard to parse.
For the new study, the researchers collected data from 1,471 United States Geological Survey stream monitoring sites from 1980 to 2022.
The data allowed the researchers to assess changes in streams nationwide. They found that riverine heat waves in 2022 were happening more often than in 1980 — with an average of 1.8 additional heat wave events taking place per year. The heat waves were also more intense, with temperatures during heat events about .8 degrees Fahrenheit higher, on average, in 2022 in comparison to 1980. Heat wave events lasted more than three days longer than in the past.
Li said the additional heat is causing about 12 more days of heat stress, on average, for species that need cold water. The study’s authors used 59 degrees F as its threshold for heat stress because some species, like bull trout, struggle to survive at about that marker.
“When we think about water, there’s a lot more attention about what quantity, because we can see it,” Li said. “We’re hoping this kind of study will increase the public awareness of the water quality issue related to climate change.”

U.S. Domestic Colonial Occupation Must Be Met with a Struggle for Decolonization, Not Reform
A Statement by PACA and BAP-DC
Since August, federal mandates carried out against Washington D.C. and intensified policing have been escalating with both the federal and local governments making it clear that they are waging a domestic war on African (Black) working class and migrant diaspora people. This imposition is not only in the form of increased National Guard troops. Arrests, deportations, and raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) surged in Washington, D.C. as part of the federal crackdown, leading to high levels of fear in immigrant communities and has emboldened the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to harass and make more arrests, especially of Africa {Black} youth.
Pan-African Community Action (PACA) and the Black Alliance for Peace (BAP) D.C. City Wide Alliance (BAP-DC), of which PACA is a member, reaffirm that these events are all the logical endpoints of a political system that prioritizes property over people and repression over community safety. With every passing week the U.S. settler colonial state, currently presided over by the Trump administration, intensifies its naked aggression.
Mobilizations of resistance have been met with unabated policies of repression. On September 17th, the House voted to expand MPD’s powers to pursue suspects in high-speed chases, further endangering life and limb of D.C. residents. Several deaths and injuries in D.C. have occurred due to high-speed police chases. Recent legislation also mandates that D.C. judges strictly comply with mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines for youth, requires the DC attorney general to release a website with juvenile crime statistics, and lowers the age at which youth can be tried as adults to the age of 14. It should go without saying that such policies in the U.S. are inherently racist and will disproportionately impact African (Black) youth.
But PACA and BAP-DC do not reduce the problem to a Trump presidency. Mayor Muriel Bowser and the D.C. City Council recently approved a new labor agreement with the Fraternal Order of Police that includes a 13% pay raise for D.C. police officers, starting October 1st. This agreement also includes retroactive cost-of-living increases and other incentives for police officers. The council voted to extend Bowser’s expanded youth curfew into the fall, granting police the power to declare designated zones with earlier curfews. The criminalization of working-class African people by the DC city government preceded the federal imposition. These recent policies must be viewed as complementary to Trump’s takeover, rather than resistant to it.
The trend in most of the cities targeted by the federal militarization is for Black misleaders to respond to the Trump administration’s threats by expanding policing on their own. PACA and BAP-DC will not allow the squabbles among the ruling class and its political lackeys to distract us and the people. We cannot become spectators of bipartisan power struggles and infighting, while our communities remain targets of both camps.
We reject under no uncertain terms the false framing and claims that these actions are about public safety. It is a shift toward domestic lawfare – legal actions undertaken as part of a hostile campaign against the African (Black) working class and migrant diaspora. Under capitalism, law does not serve as a remedy for the people’s needs or concerns. Invariably, it is used by the rich and powerful to wage war on marginalized people. PACA and BAP-DC caution against the tendency to confine the narratives to local framing and understand that local resistance must see itself clearly as part and parcel of the anti-imperialist struggle of the global south.
The heinous U.S. attacks on Venezuelan boats in international waters under the guise of carrying out a war on drugs are a counterpart to the domestic war on the people in this country. The brazen and unmitigated genocide against Palestine is being committed by the same enemies of humanity currently targeting our communities. After returning the so-called Department of Defense to its original name of War Department, Donald Trump, the current president of imperialism, threatened Chicago on a social media post, “Chicago about to find out why it’s called the Department of War.” While this may be seen by some as the antics of a megalomaniac, we are clear that at the root of this is the U.S. capitalist, imperialist system desperately trying to hold on to power. This is why its lawfare is also taking aim at organized resistance. Recent rhetoric and proposals from the Trump administration target “far-left” organizations and non-profits it accuses of fomenting political violence. The Liberal tendency is to double down on expressions of allegiance to the U.S settler colonial project, a white supremacist extension of Western Europe, instead of opposing repression.
In D.C., this takes the masked form of advocating for D.C. statehood, a reform that misguides the people’s indignation toward a nonsolution, a goal that will only add another layer of state structure for compradors to occupy. Statehood has done nothing for African (Black), indigenous, and immigrant communities facing oppression and repression in cities that are part of states across the U.S. Preserving the political autonomy and independence of D.C.’s current political process is inconsequential if local leaders continue to wage an unrelenting war against the African (Black) working-class people in D.C. Long before Trump entered the scene, the D.C. local government had already pioneered a “tough on crime” agenda that included the passage of the D.C. Secure Omnibus Crime Bill, widespread criminalization of fare evasion, and approving the construction of a new D.C. jail. Further, statehood has not increased safety or improved the lives of working-class people in Baltimore, Los Angeles, Atlanta, or Chicago, whose populations are subjected to relentless police occupation, widespread surveillance, increased deportations, and crackdowns against civil disobedience and resistance.
The criminalization, police occupation, surveillance, crackdowns on any resistance, and all such forms of repression are reflections of an ailing and inherently fascist U.S settler colonialism and cannot be remedied through reformism.
The only logical response of the colonized to its colonization is to organize for decolonization and liberation. The unavoidable first step is community control over public safety. As we have said, “the debate over federal takeover versus local government control is a distraction. In practice, both levels of this state have committed to deepening policing, expanding surveillance, and protecting the interests of capital over the needs of the people. The difference lies in style, not substance.”
The struggle must be to organize for power. Not reform. The people most subjected to the machinations of the system must organize against the U.S. settler colonialist system upheld by a synthesis of capitalism, white supremacy, and patriarchy. PACA and BAP-DC declare that the right to self-determination must be won through building radical political alternatives that prove poverty stems not from lack of resources but from their organized theft. And that sovereignty is never granted – it is seized.

The meeting was scheduled for August 11, at the Manchester, New Hampshire office of Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan. After numerous requests for a huddle with Hassan to demand that she change course in her unconditional support for Israel, a group of peace activists had finally locked in a time — not with her, but at least with one of her foreign policy staffers.

With the rising cost of groceries, housing, healthcare, and other essentials a central issue facing communities across the United States due to the Republican agenda, one expert believes that commonly cited economic statistics aren’t capturing the depth of working families’ struggles.
Gene Ludwig, former US comptroller of the currency under President Bill Clinton, is arguing that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) no longer delivers an accurate portrait of families’ hardships because it does not focus enough on the core costs that impact working people on a daily basis.
As reported by Bloomberg on Monday, Ludwig believes the CPI tracks too many goods that are either luxury purchases or are only bought sporadically. A relevant measure of inflation, he told the outlet, should primarily include goods that are essential to living, such as groceries, housing, healthcare, and energy.
Ludwig and his colleagues at the Ludwig Institute for Shared Economic Prosperity have developed their own measurement called True Living Cost (TLC), which focuses on core household needs and excludes items such as plane tickets and golf carts that are included in the CPI formula.
Prices as measured by the TLC have grown 1.3 times faster than prices as measured by the traditional CPI over the last 24 years, which may explain why US consumer sentiment has remained low even during times when the unemployment rate and the rate of inflation have been falling.
The biggest gap between TLC and CPI has been in measuring the cost of healthcare, as TLC shows that the rise in costs has been much more severe than what has been shown in traditional inflation statistics.
“In the CPI, medical care mostly measures reimbursements to providers made by private insurers and Medicare, in addition to patient payments, but the TLC tracks only households’ out-of-pocket expenses and contributions to medical and dental plans,” explained Bloomberg. “The CPI shows medical costs have doubled since 2001, whereas the TLC shows they’ve almost tripled, largely from a massive rise in premiums.”
Ludwig’s arguments about traditional inflation measures not capturing the true state of Americans’ fiscal stability were backed up by a report from The Washington Post on Sunday, which examined recent trends in housing, healthcare, food, and utility prices, and found that all of them have been rising faster than the top-line rate of inflation as measured by CPI.
The Post cited the most recent CPI data showing that natural gas bills have risen by nearly 14% over the last year, while electricity bills have surged by 6% over the same period. Grocery prices also registered their biggest spike since 2022, thanks in part to US President Donald Trump’s tariffs on imported staple foods such as coffee and bananas.
Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, told the Post that these costs are not mere luxuries that people can sacrifice until their financial situation improves.
“It’s not that they have a choice,” he said. “We’re talking about things that people must buy. They have to live somewhere… They have to heat their homes. They need lights.”
A recent CNN report focused on factors related to the most recent spike in grocery prices and found that Trump’s policies were to blame for at least two of them.
Most directly, CNN found that the tariffs on imported foods resulted in higher prices at the grocery store checkout line. Additionally, the Trump administration’s crackdown on undocumented farm workers has harmed the supply of food that’s grown domestically, which has also resulted in price increases.
And finally, CNN reported that droughts exacerbated by human-caused climate change have also hurt supplies of beef and oranges, which have led to further price squeezes.
David Ortega, a food economist at Michigan State University, told CNN that Trump’s current policy agenda “is more likely to increase the price of food” than make it more affordable.
Given the rising cost of staple groceries, many Americans have been turning to cheaper alternatives. According to The New York Times, sales of Hamburger Helper have grown by 14.5% over the last year, which is a sign that shoppers are bypassing more expensive cooking ingredients in favor of low-cost, easy-to-make meals.
Additionally, the Times report found that sales of foods that are “commonly purchased by consumers when financial times get tough—such as rice, canned meats such as tuna, and boxes of macaroni and cheese—have also been strong.
Sally Lyons Wyatt, global consumer packaged goods and food service industry adviser at research firm Circana, told the Times that US shoppers right now seem to be “looking for foods that fill them up for the least amount of money.”

For years, we had little official information about how the government interpreted the overly broad surveillance bill. On June 6, 2013, the first of Edward Snowden’s disclosures confirmed what some privacy advocates had long feared: Under Section 215 of the Patriot Act, the U.S. government collects, on a daily basis, the phone records of millions of Americans. These records include the numbers dialed and received, the dates and times of those calls, and their duration. That program was ruled unlawful by an appeals court in May 2015.
Section 215 is one of the three sections of the Patriot Act that are scheduled to sunset on June 1, 2015. This long-abused provision of the law has been a failure by nearly every measure. The author of the law has publicly stated that it was never intended to facilitate mass, suspicionless surveillance. It has not played an essential role in stopping any attack. And it has enabled an unprecedented surveillance superstructure that violates Americans’ rights to privacy, free speech, and free association.

The “designation” is normally used for “foreign terrorist organizations,” which are defined in law.
