Until now, researchers have sought to understand the human toll of sanctions on a case-by-case basis. This is difficult work and can only ever give us a partial picture. But that has changed with new research published this year in The Lancet Global Health, which gives us a global view for the first time. Led by the economist Francisco Rodriguez at the University of Denver, the study calculates the total number of excess deaths associated with international sanctions from 1970 to 2021.
The results are staggering. In their central estimate, the authors find that unilateral sanctions imposed by the US and EU since 1970 are associated with 38 million deaths. In some years, during the 1990s, more than a million people were killed. In 2021, the most recent year of data, sanctions caused more than 800,000 deaths.
According to these results, several times more people are killed by sanctions each year than are killed as direct casualties of war (on average, about 100,000 people per year). More than half of the victims are children and the elderly, people who are most vulnerable to malnutrition. The study finds that, since 2012 alone, sanctions have killed more than one million children.
Since then, the US and Europe have dramatically increased their use of sanctions. During the 1990s and 2000s, an average of 30 countries were under Western unilateral sanctions in any given year. And now, as of the 2020s, it is more than 60 – a strikingly high proportion of the countries of the Global South.

Gingrich went on to call the Israeli-Palestinian peace process “delusional” and that President Barack Obama’s treatment of Palestinians is “favoring the terrorists.”

In a Sunday sermon honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, the pastor of King’s former church accused Gingrich of “scapegoating and race-baiting.” Dr. Raphael Warnock stated, “He is playing an old game that’s part of the Southern strategy.” After finally hearing about Gingrich’s racist statements in the news media, I have one question: In this post-racial America, why did no one call Gingrich out for being a racist before now?
Newt’s language offers not-so-subtle clues to those who already hold racist views. Newt has faced criticism for repeatedly calling Obama “the food stamp president.” Gingrich is not using the phrase because he wants to highlight growing poverty; rather, he is subtly suggesting that Obama is doling out government benefits to his black constituents. Gingrich also thinks federal courts should not have ordered Southern schools to desegregate in the 1950′s. He has referred to Spanish as “the language of living in a ghetto.” Gingrich, a former history professor, once warned white people that you can only understand President Obama if you understand his “Kenyan, anti-colonial behavior.”
The most offensive idea to come out of Gingrich’s mouth: he claimed that poor children have no role models to teach them about hard work, so he advocates relaxing child labor laws to allow them to work as janitors in their own schools. For someone who once touted his bipartisan education ideas with Al Sharpton, this idea is ridiculous. When would these students/janitors do their homework? If these kids truly lack role models, the solution is to give them role models, not to have them cleaning up shit in their spare time.

Inflection points:
On March 12, 2020, a Jefferson County Circuit Court judge approved five search warrants for locations linked to Taylor’s ex-boyfriend, a convicted felon suspected of supplying a local drug house. One of those locations was Taylor’s residence.
In the early hours of March 13, Hankison and other officers executed a warrant at Taylor’s apartment.Taylor was in bed with her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker III, when the officers announced their presence and then battered down the front door.
Taylor and Walker yelled to ask who was at the door but got no response, Walker said afterward. Thinking they were intruders, Walker grabbed a gun he legally owned and fired a shot when the officers broke through the door.
That triggered a volley of fire from the officers. Taylor, who was standing in a hallway with Walker, was shot multiple times. Walker was not injured.
“Somebody kicked in the door and shot my girlfriend,” Walker said in a 911 call.
Hankison had been standing outside the apartment and is accused of blindly firing through a door and a window. His bullets entered a neighboring apartment, where a pregnant woman, a man and a child were home, according to the state attorney general.
Walker was at first charged with attempted murder of a police officer and first-degree assault – Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly was shot in the leg – but prosecutors later decided to drop the charges.
None of the police officers at the raid were wearing body cameras, and there is no video of the night Taylor bled to death in her hallway.
Hankison was fired from the police department in late June 2020.

When Andrea Brower was hired two years ago as the lead instructor for Gonzaga University’s solidarity and social justice program, she thought she had landed a dream job. Brower was tasked with “mentoring students in their social justice pursuits” at the private, liberal arts university in eastern Washington state. The school’s Jesuit mission highlighted a commitment to diversity, global engagement and “solidarity with the poor and vulnerable” – a perfect fit for Brower, who had come to academia by way of grassroots, environmental activism in her native Hawaii.
Brower felt at first that her activist credentials were welcome, but when she started organizing around issues on campus – criticizing the treatment of adjuncts and rising administrator salaries and speaking out against the university’s investments in fossil fuels – she began to run into opposition from university administrators.
But it was after she began to protest against Israel’s war in Gaza and criticize Gonzaga’s investments in weapons manufacturers that her troubles really started. Last year, a colleague Brower had never met filed a formal complaint accusing her of antisemitism. It took eight months for the university to conclude that the allegations were unsubstantiated.
The months-long ordeal ultimately led Brower to resign from her position rather than work for an institution increasingly willing to “repress critical thought and dissent”, she wrote in her resignation letter, which she made public on Thursday. “I can bear the harassment, the bullying, the character slander, but what I will not tolerate is being constricted from doing honest, rigorous teaching,” she said in an exclusive interview before she resigned. “I don’t know how I’m going to teach in an environment where I know I am being so closely watched and surveilled by administrators.”
A spokesperson for Gonzaga did not answer a detailed list of questions, saying the university “does not discuss or disclose details about any person’s employment”.
Brower’s case is hardly isolated. As the Trump administration has turned civil rights legislation into a cudgel to root out progressive politics on US campuses, with billions of dollars in federal funding on the line, pro-Palestinian professors have increasingly been caught in the crossfire. But while the government’s crackdown on universities has drawn widespread condemnation, a parallel campaign targeting specific faculty members has received far less attention. Often initiated by actors seizing on the political climate and the vulnerability of universities, accusations against professors of antisemitism have come at a great professional and personal cost for many.

Indeed, raw feelings about the killing have ignited a campaign to shame — and more. Several conservative activists sought to identify social media users whose posts about Kirk they viewed as offensive or celebratory. Right-wing influencer Laura Loomer said she would try to ruin the professional aspirations of anyone who celebrated Kirk’s death.
MSNBC said Dowd is no longer with the network after his comments, shortly after the shooting, about “hateful words” leading to “hateful actions.” Both MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler and Dowd apologized for the remarks, which Kutler called “inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable.”
Dowd said he didn’t intend for his comments to blame Kirk for the attack. Still, it brought an abrupt interruption to his work as a television commentator, which the former aide to President George W. Bush has done for nearly two decades.

Actions spread across country, from Mississippi to Arizona
A Florida reporter was suspended for a question posed to a congressman. A comic book writer lost her job because of social media posts, as did educators in Mississippi and Tennessee. “CBS Mornings” host Nate Burleson was attacked for a question. An Arizona sports reporter and a Carolina Panthers public relations official both lost jobs.
An anonymously registered website pledged to “Expose Charlie’s Murderers” and asked people to offer tips about people who were “supporting political violence online.”
The site published a running list Thursday of targeted posts, along with the names, locations and employers of people who posted them. While some posts contained incendiary language, others didn’t appear to celebrate the shooting or glorify violence. There were several similar efforts, including one by activist Scott Presler, who asked his followers about teachers who supposedly celebrated Kirk’s assassination, and posted findings on X.
A staff member at the University of Mississippi was fired after sharing “insensitive comments” about Kirk’s death, according to the school’s chancellor, Glenn Boyce. The university did not identify the employee or immediately respond to questions from The Associated Press.
The president of Middle Tennessee State University said he’d fired a staffer who offered “callous and inappropriate comments on social media” about the assassination. President Sidney A. McPhee did not identify the staff member but said the person “worked in a position of trust with our students.”
It wasn’t clear if it was the same person, but an X post by Tennessee GOP Sen. Marsha Blackburn identified an assistant dean of students at MTSU who posted online that she had “ZERO sympathy” following the shooting. Blackburn said the person should be ashamed and fired.
A warning to teachers in Florida
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ education commissioner warned the state’s teachers that making “disgusting” statements about Kirk’s assassination could draw sanctions, including the suspension or revocation of their teaching licenses. Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas said in a memo to school district superintendents that he’d been made aware of “despicable” comments on social media.
“I will be conducting an investigation of every educator who engages in this vile, sanctionable behavior,” Kamoutsas said in the memo, which he also posted on X on Thursday. “Govern yourselves accordingly.”
The rush to police commentary appeared to have little precedent in other recent examples of political violence, such as the 2022 attack on Paul Pelosi, husband of then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, or the shooting deaths earlier this year former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman, a Democrat, and her husband Mark.
DC Comics announced that it was ditching a new “Red Hood” series, a Batman spinoff, after one issue had been published and two more were in the works. The comics’ writer, Gretchen Felker-Martin, had published comments about Kirk’s shooting online that DC called offensive.
“Posts or public comments that can be viewed as promoting hostility or violence are inconsistent with DC’s standards of conduct,” the comics publisher said.
Loomer, whose pressure campaigns have resulted in several Trump administration firings, attacked the entertainment website TMZ for what she called a “disgusting” livestream where employees could be heard laughing and cheering seconds before Kirk’s death was announced. TMZ said the noise had nothing to do with the Kirk story — the staff members were crowded around a computer watching a car chase — but apologized for the bad timing and how it looked to viewers.
A writer for the Arizona media company PHNX Sports was fired after conservative activists called attention to a series of online posts that attacked Kirk’s positions on guns and Gaza and called him evil.
The NFL’s Panthers distanced themselves from an employee who posted comments about Kirk and a photo referencing Wu-Tang Clan’s song “Protect Ya Neck.” Kirk was shot in the neck. Football communications coordinator Charlie Rock was fired, according to a person with knowledge of the situation who spoke under condition of anonymity because the team typically doesn’t announce firings.
Rock’s name has been removed from the team’s website. He did not immediately return messages seeking comment.
Football star turned CBS News anchor under attack
Burleson, a former football star turned anchor for CBS News’ morning show, was attacked online for asking former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on the air Thursday whether this was a moment for the Republican party to reflect on political violence. His co-anchor, Gayle King, immediately tried to soften the question by interjecting, “I’d say both parties.”

Donald Trump’s infamous Madison Square Garden rally on Sunday ignited a firestorm of criticism and has been repeatedly denounced as racist, most notably due to the comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s reference to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage.”.
But the bigoted statements from the rally did not stop there. Here is a list of the people and groups who were attacked at Trump’s campaign rally by speakers who spewed hateful vitriol throughout the night.
1. Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio
Hinchcliffe repeated false claims that Haitian immigrants are eating pets in Springfield, Ohio. “You know, you used to be able to tell people to Google stuff. My mom’s a boomer in the state of Ohio, and there’s no convincing her of anything,” he said. Hinchcliffe continued: “She’s eating the cats, she’s eating the dogs. They’re eating the pets up there.” Disinformation about Haitian immigrants has led to threats and harassment against community members. Schools in Springfield faced more than 30 bomb threats after Trump and other Republicans continued to repeat false claims.
2. Black Americans
In a bit involving an audience member whom Hinchcliffe identified as Black, Hinchcliffe said that the man was “one of [his] buddies” with whom he had attended a Halloween party at which they “carved watermelon together”. The association of Black people with watermelon is a longstanding anti-Black trope dating back to the 19th century.
3. Jewish and Palestinian people
“When it comes to Israel and Palestine, we’re all thinking the same thing. Settle your stuff already. Best out of three,” Hinchcliffe said about Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza. “The Palestinians are gonna throw rock every time,” he continued, alluding to Palestinians throwing rocks at Israeli soldiers during demonstrations. Hinchcliffe ended the joke with an antisemitic trope about Jewish people and money, saying: “Jews have a hard time throwing that paper.”
4. Vice-President Kamala Harris
During his appearance, Tucker Carlson, the Trump loyalist and former Fox News host, sarcastically referred to Harris, who is Black and Indian, as a “Samoan-Malaysian” with a “low IQ”, joining other Republicans who have purposely misidentified Harris’s background throughout the campaign cycle. Carson’s claims about Harris’s intellectual capacity have also been parroted by Trump, and have no basis. The businessman Grant Cardone also insulted Harris during his remarks, suggesting that she was a sex worker and her advisers were “pimp handlers”, a misogynistic, racist and entirely false accusation.
5. Transgender people

Who’s going to stand up and say, the cartels are gone, the criminal migrants are gone, the gangs are gone.” Research has shown that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than people born in the US.
“He’s been taking Americans and his followers on a journey since really 2015 conditioning them … step by step instilling hatred in a group, and then escalating,” said Ruth Ben-Ghiat, a history professor at New York University who writes about authoritarianism and fascism and has been outspoken about the dangers of a second Trump administration.
“So immigrants are crime. Immigrants are anarchy. Lacy-Powell panicked three weeks ago when she discovered a green notice stuck to the windshield of each vehicle on a street in Southeast Portland. The city had determined that her vehicles were “abandoned,” according to the note, and would be towing them within 10 days. Without enough money to pay for gas to move both, she quickly moved everything into her RV and drove it to another street.
Her van was towed, and she said she hasn’t had the time or transportation to retrieve it. She said she now lives in fear that her remaining vehicle could be towed any time.
“Living alone as a woman on the street, this isn’t the life I wanted,” she said. “But I have one place where I feel safe, my RV. And the city wants to take that away?”
Mayor Keith Wilson wants to make it easier to do so.
Months ago, Lacy-Powell would have been able to pick up her towed van for free, under a policy that waives towing costs for “lived-in” vehicles retrieved within 30 days. But Wilson reversed that policy last month. Soon, getting her van back would cost more than $300.
It’s part of a coordinated effort from the mayor’s office to crack down on cars and RVs that people are living in that appear inoperable or severely damaged, criteria that meet the city’s definition of a “derelict” vehicle.
A man tried to flee when ICE agents attempted to detain him in Chicago. According to reports, the man tried to drive away, pulling one of the agents with his car. It was then that an agent opened fire, shooting into the car and killing the man.
Mainstream media outlets are reporting on the injuries sustained by the ICE agent who was taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to recover.
Outlets are ignoring the fact that the officers pulled the man out of his car and put his lifeless body in handcuffs.

A video taken by a bystander and uploaded to Chitown Crimechasers on Facebook shows Ice agents trying to get into Villegas-Gonzalez’ car. Yanking the car handle and eventually breaking the glass and unlocking the car from the inside.
In a statement, the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) denounced the fatal shooting, saying:
“We grieve for Silverio’s family and neighbors. His killing at the hands of ICE is a display of the extreme, aggressive tactics that ICE has been carrying out in its operations across Chicagoland this week … This killing is the latest in a mounting pile of evidence that Trump’s mass deportation machine is completely out of control.”

Even though Measure 110 decriminalized drugs, police can issue citations, up to a $100 fine which can be dismissed if the person calls a hotline offering screening and help for drug addiction.
Since Measure 110 took effect in February 2021, police have issued 4451 citations. A majority of people — 3057, or 69% — ignored the ticket, didn’t pay the fine or show up to court. Only 189 who called the hotline completed substance use screening, according to Lines for Life, which operates the hotline.

Necessitated teamwork: Agricultural work isn’t easy, efficiency requires teamwork and diverse perspectives. HGP fosters collaboration, boosting social skills and strong social bonds.
Tangible metaphors and life lessons: The nature of farm work provided a tangible space for participants to process and learn life lessons. Participants described that weeding and nursing plants to health reflected their own journey of personal growth.

“Kinetic strike” is just a euphemism for murder. The above words came with a video of people in a little boat being blown up. You don’t see the blood spurting out of their bodies, as you might in an unacceptable murder objected to by Trump. You see a cool flash of light of the sort you’ve been conditioned by countless movies, television shows, and news broadcasts to ooh and aah at. But it’s just killing people.
There is no legal basis for the U.S. military to circle a giant chunk of the Earth’s surface and declare it the “responsibility” of a portion of that military named “SOUTHCOM.” This was at least 1,000 miles away from the United States, and therefore a job for a department of “defense” only with the usual hypocrisy even had there been some sort of attack on anything — it’s a good thing the department is back to being one of “war.”
Nobody has publicly identified the people or identified them as drug dealers or as members of a particular gang.
Nobody has publicly established that there exists a gang engaged in “narcoterrorism” — that is in dealing drugs and in terrorism. The most likely scenario for that happening will be city cops busting U.S. National Guard occupiers selling illegal substances to each other.
There is no way to define terrorism so as not to include the act of blowing up a boat and threatening to blow up more. Labeling the victims terrorists, even if true, cannot change that.
There is no public evidence that the president of Venezuela is in charge of the alleged gang.

The boat was not “heading to the United States.” The U.S. Secretary of State said it was headed to Trinidad & Tobago and then “corrected” his statement to agree with Trump’s. His initial statement was more plausible for such a small boat. We later learned that the people on the boat had apparently become aware of the drone or drones above them and reversed course, so that at the time of their murder they were headed in the opposite direction of wherever they had been headed at first.
It is highly unlikely that “No U.S. Forces were harmed in this strike.” The U.S. Air Force has long made clear that PTSD and moral injury are far more common among “drone pilots” who watch their targets on a screen than among airborne pilots.
Trump’s video did not show what we later learned were multiple strikes on the same little boat, which would have looked less wrath-of-God cool than a single bolt of MAGAnite.
Bragging about something on social media implies that it is legal, acceptable, and admirable. Reuters’ comical straight-faced “analysis” went like this: “Some experts questioned whether the decision to summarily kill people merely on suspicion of smuggling drugs violated international law. Trafficking in an illegal substance is not normally considered a capital offence.” In fact, murdering people violates international and national laws. Past U.S. presidents having done something does not legalize it. Even advocates for worldwide drone murder sprees have always maintained that it is only through the magic of being part of a war that such murders become totally admirable non-murders. If something were a “capital offense” a president would still not get to be judge, jury, and executioner with no indictment or trial — not legally.
Drug dealing is not warmaking, and immigrating is not militarily invading. When someone like Senator Chris Murphy says that who was killed on the boat may have been members of a drug cartel or may have been civilians, he is selling snake oil. Drug dealers are civilians.*
Threatening more of the same is a crime under international and national laws as well, starting with the United Nations Charter.
When someone like Senator Chris Murphy says the big damage here is the setback for the war on drugs, he is obscuring our view of the mass murder just committed by Trump.
When the same senator says that blowing up boats would be legal if Congress had authorized it, he is pushing the lie that Congress has the power to overrule international law. It does not. On September 13, 2001, Cofer Black, the head of CIA counter-terrorism, had a conversation with President George W. Bush in which he boasted: “When we are through with them [referring to Afghans and others supporting terrorism], they will have flies walking across their eyeballs.”
Sadly, Black’s boast essentially came to pass starting three weeks later. On October 7, the U.S. commenced bombing Afghanistan and has been at war in the Middle East ever since, occupying and invading numerous countries while escalating its arming of Israel.
An estimated 387,073 civilians died as a result of America’s post 9/11 Middle East wars and another 3.6-3.7 million died indirectly. At least 70,000 Afghan civilians died from the 20-year U.S. bombing of Afghanistan and an estimated 243,000 civilians were killed in the war.
Brad Wolf, a former prosecutor from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, has helped to coordinate a tribunal with other peace activists, charging top weapons manufacturers (aka “merchants of death”) with war crimes for producing weapons that have been used to kill civilians in illegal wars undertaken in violation of the Geneva Convention and UN Charter.
The model for the tribunal is the Nuremberg trials after World War II which tried and convicted the executives of German war industries, notably I.G. Farben, Krupp and Flick, for war crimes.
The tribunal’s college intern, Norah Tafuri, narrated a short documentary about the Afghan War, which presented a strong case that leading U.S. weapons contractors—notably Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Boeing and General Atomics—were culpable in war crimes.
Tafuri quoted Black at the outset to illustrate the malign intent of U.S. foreign policymakers who wanted to spill Arab blood in an attempt to avenge the 9/11 attacks.
The Afghan War was carried out illegally because the Taliban had offered to put Osama bin Laden—the alleged culprit behind the 9/11 attacks—on trial before 9/11 and had made a proposal for a three-nation court that the Bush administration rejected.
Tafuri pointed out that the U.S. first became involved in Afghanistan in 1949 when an American engineering firm, Morrison-Knudsen, built an irrigation system in the mineral-rich Helmand province. Afghanistan at the time was on the front lines of the Cold War and the U.S. was using the country as a tool to counteract Soviet influence in Central Asia.
After 9/11, the Bush administration authorized American geologists to undertake a survey of Afghanistan which determined that the country had more than $1 trillion in mineral wealth buried beneath the ground. The Khanneshin carbonatite deposit in Helmand alone was valued at $89 billion.
Besides accessing these lucrative resources, the Bush administration coveted the building of an oil pipeline in Afghanistan from the Caspian oil fields to the Indian Ocean.
The pipeline was supposed to be built by UNOCAL, a California company in which Halliburton, the oil servicing company Vice President Dick Cheney was CEO of, had interests.

One of the boys was so despondent because of his injuries that he refused to even go outside and interact with other kids.
Kelly traveled throughout Afghanistan and met many victims who had lost loved ones or had their homes destroyed from the U.S. air campaign over Afghanistan and were left to wonder why they had been targeted and had to suffer such a cruel fate.

Wolf, who narrated a special 30-minute segment on the bombing, noted that the Pentagon attributed the catastrophe to human and technical error, however there was evidence to indicate that the coordinates of the hospital had been given to American pilots by an Afghan commander who wanted members of the Taliban being treated there killed.
Derrick Gregory, an independent journalist, found a redacted version of the official military report to be “profoundly unsatisfactory” with “brutishly heavy handed redactions” that “suppressed transcripts from pilot radio communications.”
According to Wolf, ultimate culpability for the bombing lies not only with the military but also the manufacturers of the AC-130 gunship and its high tech missile systems (Lockheed, Boeing and Raytheon), which should have never been unleashed in an urban area.

Israel’s Strike in Doha
After an Israeli strike targeting the offices of Hamas in Qatar that killed several office members of the group and a Qatari corporal and injured several others, Trump expressed regret over the incident, calling Qatar “a strong ally and friend of the U.S.” He also directed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to finalize a defense cooperation agreement with the country.
Hamas said in a statement that its top leader survived the attack but that five rank-and-file members of the group were killed, including the son of Khalil al-Hayya—Hamas’s top negotiator—as well as three bodyguards and the head of al-Hayya’s office.

As Anna Stavrianakis has explained, there is a “basic asymmetry” in the dynamics of the arms trade, where the vast majority of weapons are produced in the Global North, and exported to the Global South. This dynamic itself is both a legacy and a driver of colonialism. Historically, there has been disproportionate focus on ‘buyer’ countries in the anti-corruption field, and not the “seller” countries or the vast multinational corporations who instigated the deals. The crucial point that is often missed is that corruption cannot occur without the participation of both the seller and the buyer. The disproportional focus on the Global South perpetuates supremacist colonial narratives about corruption and development.
Now, don’t be fooled. The current war machine isn’t your grandfather’s MIC, not by a country mile. It receives far more money and offers far different rationales. It has far more sophisticated tools of influence and significantly different technological aspirations.
Perhaps the first and foremost difference between Eisenhower’s era and ours is the sheer size of the major weapons firms. Before the post-Cold War merger boom of the 1990s, there were dozens of significant defense contractors. Now, there are just five big (no, enormous!) players — Boeing, General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Raytheon. With so few companies to produce aircraft, armored vehicles, missile systems, and nuclear weapons, the Pentagon has ever more limited leverage in keeping them from overcharging for products that don’t perform as advertised. The Big Five alone routinely split more than $150 billion in Pentagon contracts annually, or nearly 20% of the total Pentagon budget. Altogether, more than half of the department’s annual spending goes to contractors large and small.
But for Pentagon contractors, Washington’s ever more intense focus on the prospect of war with China has one overriding benefit: it’s fabulous for business. The threat of China’s military, real or imagined, continues to be used to justify significant increases in military spending, especially on the next generation of high-tech systems ranging from hypersonic missiles to robotic weapons and artificial intelligence. The history of such potentially dysfunctional high-tech systems, from President Ronald Reagan’s “Star Wars” missile defense system to the F-35, does not bode well, however, for the cost or performance of emerging military technologies.
No matter, count on one thing: tens, if not hundreds, of billions of dollars will undoubtedly go into developing them anyway. And remember that they are dangerous and not just to any enemy. As Michael Klare pointed out in an Arms Control Association report: “AI-enabled systems may fail in unpredictable ways, causing unintended human slaughter or an uncontrolled escalation crisis.”

The University of Oregon is laying off another roughly 60 employees in an ongoing budget-cutting effort, according to the public institution’s senior leaders.
This will bring the total to 117 staff, faculty and high-level administrators laid off across the university, with about half having been let go earlier this year, university President Karl Scholz and Provost Christopher Long said in a community message on Monday. That’s on top of 59 vacant positions that were eliminated.
The cuts are part of a push to close a projected $25 million to $30 million deficit in the university’s fiscal 2026 general and education budget driven by rising costs, falling out-of-state enrollment, federal policy uncertainty and other pressures.

The King’s Torah … a guide to the killing of Palestinians
The two authors extensively tackle an issue that dominates the entire book – that is, when will the Jews be allowed to kill the gentiles (goyim)? When should the Jews kill them? The gentiles must not be misidentified. Clarifying the ‘gentiles’ here as being basically the Palestinian Arabs, Rabbi Yitzchak Ginzburg, a revered religious figure among the religious Jews in Israel, says in the introduction to The King’s Torah that the issues addressed by the book:
“are closely related to the situation in the land of Israel, which we should restore from our enemies.”
He argued that the book serves the objective of achieving this goal, strengthening the morale of the Israeli people and soldiers, and explaining both the Torah’s deep comprehensive view and Jewish law on outstanding relevant issues.

This book really represents a guide for the perplexed, the hesitant and those who seek a religious Jewish legal opinion (fatwa) as to when it is allowed to kill the Palestinian Arabs and when this “should” take place according to the Jewish law. Moreover, it provides moral and religious support to many settlers and Israelis who are convinced of the content of this book before reading it.
Written in ancient Hebrew similar to ancient religious Jewish writings, the authors consolidate their views in the book, especially those calling for the killing of gentiles (i.e., the Palestinians), with texts from Jewish law and a lot of quotes by senior Jewish rabbis through different ages. They make this a backdrop for any opinion they hold in the book, giving it a religious aura influencing many Jews, especially the religious. The outstanding religious sources of the Jewish law were a basis for the book. In addition to the written Torah, which they quote little, the authors depend as well on the oral Torah, Mishnah (about AD 200), and on post-Mishnah rabbinic interpretations compiled in the Babylonian Talmud (AD 5th Century Babylonia) and the Jerusalem Talmud (AD 4th Century Palestine).

In an important new book, Palestine in Israeli School Books, Israeli language and education professor Nurit Peled-Elhanan buries the second part of Livni’s myth once and for all.
Peled-Elhanan examines 17 Israeli school textbooks on history, geography and civic studies. Her conclusions are an indictment of the Israeli system of indoctrination and its cultivation of anti-Arab racism from an early age: “The books studied here harness the past to the benefit of the … Israeli policy of expansion, whether they were published during leftist or right-wing [education] ministries” (224).
She goes into great detail, examining and exposing the sometimes complex and subtle ways this is achieved. Her expertise in semiotics (the study of signs and symbols) comes to the fore.

The “ten plagues” Katz refers refers to are a series of catastrophic events described in the Book of Exodus. Zelikow, who wrote his PhD dissertation on ‘The Creation and Maintenance of the Public Myth,’ was appointed Executive Director of the 9/11 Commission by George W. Bush. Both Ashton Carter (Sec. of Defense under Obama) and John Deutch (Director of the CIA 1995-96) were senior partners of Global Technology Partners, an exclusive affiliate of Rothschild North America, when ‘Catastrophic Terrorism’ was written. Last year Reporty changed its name to Carbyne. The company develops call-handling and identification capabilities for emergency response services.
Barak is the chairman of Carbyne and according to reports by business media outlets, his personal investment in the company totals millions of dollars in it. Haaretz has learned that Epstein financed a considerable part of the investment, thus becoming a partner in the project.
Interestingly, Barak’s first cousin David Brog was long-time chief of staff to Pennsylvania senator Arlen Spector, who, as a young Jewish attorney for the Warren Commission, confected the ludicrous ‘magic bullet’ theory to explain away blatant anomalies in the assassination of President John F. Those in favor of President Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops to cities are largely in his Republican base and say it reduces crime, feel it makes them personally safer — even if they don’t live in cities — and that in principle they’d support deployment to other U.S. cities.
The majority of Americans are opposed, though, and those who are, tend to feel their own rights and freedoms would be less secure as a result. They do not think it would be effective at reducing crime or make them any safer.
To those in favor, it’s not a case of red-versus-blue cities. They’d support the Guard being sent to either Democratic- or Republican-led places, or coming to their own local area as well.
To those opposed, they believe the president is acting out of politics more than crime prevention.

For those of you who missed your mandatory two seconds of Dominican history: Trujillo, one of the twentieth century’s most infamous dictators, ruled the Dominican Republic between 1930 and 1961 with an implacable ruthless brutality. A portly, sadistic, pig-eyed mulato who bleached his skin, wore platform shoes, and had a fondness for Napoleon-era haberdashery, Trujillo (also known as El Jefe, the Failed Cattle Thief, and Fuckface) came to control nearly every aspect of the DR’s political, cultural, social, and economic life through a potent (and familiar) mixture of violence, intimidation, massacre, rape, co-optation, and terror; treated the country like it was a plantation and he was the master. It was believed, even in educated circles, that anyone who plotted against Trujillo would incur a fuku most powerful, down to the seventh generation and beyond. If you even thought a bad thing about Trujillo, fua, a hurricane would sweep your family out to sea, fua, a boulder would fall out of a clear sky and squash you, fua, the shrimp you ate today was the cramp that killed you tomorrow. To the red country and part of the gray country of Oklahoma, the last rains came gently, and they did not cut the scarred earth. The plows crossed and recrossed the rivulet marks. The last rains lifted the corn quickly and scattered weed colonies and grass along the sides of the roads so that the gray country and the dark red country began to disappear under a green cover. In the last part of May the sky grew pale and the clouds that had hung in high puffs for so long in the spring were dissipated. The sun flared down on the growing corn day after day until a line of brown spread along the edge of each green bayonet. The clouds appeared, and went away, and in a while they did not try any more. The weeds grew darker green to protect themselves, and they did not spread any more. The surface of the earth crusted, a thin hard crust, and as the sky became pale, so the earth became pale, pink in the red country and white in the gray country.
In the water-cut gullies the earth dusted down in dry little streams. Gophers and ant lions started small avalanches. And as the sharp sun struck day after day, the leaves of the young corn became less stiff and erect; they bent in a curve at first, and then, as the central ribs of strength grew weak, each leaf tilted downward. Then it was June, and the sun shone more fiercely. The brown lines on the corn leaves widened and moved in on the central ribs. The weeds frayed and edged back toward their roots. The air was thin and the sky more pale; and every day the earth paled.
In the roads where the teams moved, where the wheels milled the ground and the hooves of the horses beat the ground, the dirt crust broke and the dust formed. Every moving thing lifted the dust into the air: a walking man lifted a thin layer as high as his waist, and a wagon lifted the dust as high as the fence tops, and an automobile boiled a cloud behind it. The dust was long in settling back again.
When June was half gone, the big clouds moved up out of Texas and the Gulf, high heavy clouds, rain-heads. The men in the fields looked up at the clouds and sniffed at them and held wet fingers up to sense the wind. And the horses were nervous while the clouds were up. The rain-heads dropped a little spattering and hurried on to some other country. Behind them the sky was pale again and the sun flared. In the dust there were drop craters where the rain had fallen, and there were clean splashes on the corn, and that was all.
A gentle wind followed the rain clouds, driving them on northward, a wind that softly clashed the drying corn. A day went by and the wind increased, steady, unbroken by gusts. The dust from the roads fluffed up and spread out and fell on the weeds beside the fields, and fell into the fields a little way. Now the wind grew strong and hard and it worked at the rain crust in the corn fields. Little by little he sky was darkened by the mixing dust, and the wind felt over the earth, loosened the dust, and carried it away. The wind grew stronger. The rain crust broke and the dust lifted up out of the fields and drove gray plumes into the air like sluggish smoke. The corn threshed the wind and made a dry, rushing sound. The finest dust did not settle back to earth now, but disappeared into the darkening sky.
The wind grew stronger, whisked under stones, carried up straws and old leaves, and even little clods, marking its course as it sailed across the fields. The air and the sky darkened and through them the sun shone redly, and there was a raw sting in the air. During a night the wind raced faster over the land, dug cunningly among the rootlets of the corn, and the corn fought the wind with its weakened leaves until the roots were freed by the prying wind and then each stalk settled wearily sideways toward the earth and pointed the direction of the wind.
The dawn came, but no day. In the gray sky a red sun appeared, a dim red circle that gave a little light, like dusk; and as that day advanced, the dusk slipped back toward darkness, and the wind cried and whimpered over the fallen corn.
Men and women huddled in their houses, and they tied handkerchiefs over their noses when they went out, and wore goggles to protect their eyes.
When the night came again it was black night, for the stars could not pierce the dust to get down, and the window lights could not even spread beyond their own yards. Now the dust was evenly mixed with the air, and emulsion of dust and air. Houses were shut tight, and cloth wedged around doors and windows, but the dust came in so thinly that it could not be seen in the air, and it settled like pollen on the chairs and tables, on the dishes. The people brushed it from their shoulders. Little lines of dust lay at the door sills.
In the middle of that night the wind passed on and left the land quiet. The dust-filled air muffled sound more completely than fog does. The people, lying in their beds, heard the wind stop. They awakened when the rushing wind was gone. They lay quietly and listened deep into the stillness. Then the roosters crowed, and their voices were muffled, and the people stirred restlessly in their beds and wanted the morning. They knew it would take a long time for the dust to settle out of the air. In the morning the dust hung like fog, and the sun was as red as ripe new blood. All day the dust sifted down from the sky, and the next day it sifted down. An even blanket covered the earth. It settled on the corn, piled up on the tops of the fence posts, piled up on the wires; it settled on roofs, blanketed the weeds and trees.
The people came out of their houses and smelled the hot stinging air and covered their noses from it. And the children came out of the houses, but they did not run or shout as they would have done after a rain. Men stood by their fences and looked at the ruined corn, drying fast now, only a little green showing through the film of dust. The men were silent and they did not move often. And the women came out of the houses to stand beside their men – to feel whether this time the men would break. The women studied the men’s faces secretly, for the corn could go, as long as something else remained. The children stood nearby drawing figures in the dust with bare toes, and the children sent exploring senses out to see whether men and women would break. The children peeked at the faces of the men and women, and then drew careful lines in the dust with their toes. Horses came to the watering troughs and nuzzled the water to clear the surface dust. After a while the faces of the watching men lost their bemused perplexity and became hard and angry and resistant. Then the women knew that they were safe and that there was no break. Then they asked, Whta’ll we do? And the men replied, I don’t know. But, it was all right. The women knew it was all right, and the watching children knew it was all right. Women and children knew deep in themselves that no misfortune was too great to bear if their men were whole. The women went into the houses to their work, and the children began to play, but cautiously at first. As the day went forward the sun became less red. It flared down on the dust-blanketed land. The men sat in the doorways of their houses; their hands were busy with sticks and little rocks. The men sat still – thinking – figuring.
And so this Century of the Jew, this Century of the Mossad and Epstein and Ellison and Brin and Zuckerberg and Altman and Karp and Ackman, oh, these cocksuckers want us in a new dust bowl of hell.

Both are products of Washington think tanks (Takaichi from the intelligence agency Congressional Research Service, and Koizumi from CSIS) who, unlike Ishiba, stand to benefit from doing Washington’s bidding.
The far-right party Sanseito that was created with the assistance of Trump’s team will try to infiltrate and destroy the LDP, in much the same way that MAGA infiltrated, and the destroyed, the Republican Party. The LDP has been a feudal system that allowed for a diversity of opinions under the banner of LDP. That age may be about to end.
It was unrealistic to expect Ishiba to carry out any remarkable reforms granted the corrupt nature of the LDP, and its close ties to Washington DC, but for a moment, he did shine.
Most likely the timing was related to two important events in the United States.
The first was the meeting of Donald Trump with the billionaires CEOs of the IT firms that want to rule the world [Sam Altman (CEO of OpenAI), Satya Nadella (CEO of Microsoft), Sundar Pichai (CEO of Alphabet /Google), Sergey Brin (co-founder of Google), David Limp (CEO of Blue Origin on behalf of Jeff Bezos of Amazon), Mark Zuckerberg (CEO of Meta), and Lisa Su (CEO of AMD)] was a turning point in American politics. The institutions of government have been abandoned and complete control of all aspects of society turned over to private multinational corporations that are dedicated to regulating and controlling human society globally. Their governance by AI has became the new norm.
This new government by corporations that decide reality and ideology has no tolerance for politicians like Ishiba who show too much independence, or for nations like Japan that still have some parts of the government that function independently of multinational corporations.
The Event. That was their euphemism for the environmental collapse, social unrest, nuclear explosion, unstoppable virus, or Mr Robot hack that takes everything down.

This single question occupied us for the rest of the hour. They knew armed guards would be required to protect their compounds from the angry mobs. But how would they pay the guards once money was worthless? What would stop the guards from choosing their own leader? The billionaires considered using special combination locks on the food supply that only they knew. Or making guards wear disciplinary collars of some kind in return for their survival. Or maybe building robots to serve as guards and workers – if that technology could be developed in time.
That’s when it hit me: at least as far as these gentlemen were concerned, this was a talk about the future of technology. Taking their cue from Elon Musk colonizing Mars, Peter Thiel reversing the ageing process, or Sam Altman and Ray Kurzweil uploading their minds into supercomputers, they were preparing for a digital future that had a whole lot less to do with making the world a better place than it did with transcending the human condition altogether and insulating themselves from a very real and present danger of climate change, rising sea levels, mass migrations, global pandemics, nativist panic, and resource depletion. For them, the future of technology is really about just one thing: escape.
