It is now generally agreed that the official U.S. Army hangman—Sergeant John C. Woods—bungled the hangings, either via incompetence (doubtful) or deliberately, to make the convicted men suffer for their crimes via slow strangulation, as opposed to quickly having their necks broken.
Photographs of the dead show some with bloodied faces from having struck the edge of the open trap door on their plunge downward. The cocky hangman Woods boasted afterwards, “I hanged those 10 Nazis!” Sauckel and Ribbentrop choked to death over 14 minutes each, and Keitel double that, at 28—the most painful of them all.
Of the other six men imprisoned at Spandau, Foreign Minister Baron Konstantin von Neurath was released in 1954 after a heart attack, dying in 1956; Grand Admiral Dr. Erich Raeder was released due to ill health in 1955, dying five years later; and Economics Minister Walther Funk went home ill in 1957, dying that same year.
Sentenced to 10 years was Grand Admiral and Reich President Karl Dönitz, who served his full term, was released in 1956, and died in 1980. Dying in 1981 was Minister of Armaments Dr. Albert Speer, having served his full 20-year term, as had Hitler Youth leader Baldur von Schirach; both were let out in 1966, with the latter dying in 1974. The seventh man—Hess—served from 1947-87, plus an earlier four years as a British POW, 1941-45.

When Adolf Hitler took power in 1933, the Nazis controlled less than three percent of Germany’s 4,700 papers.
The elimination of the German multi-party political system brought about the demise of hundreds of newspapers produced by outlawed political parties. It also allowed the state to seize the printing plants and equipment of the Communist and Social Democratic Parties, which were often turned over directly to the Nazi Party. In the following months, the Nazis established control or exerted influence over independent press organs.
During the first weeks of 1933, the Nazi regime deployed the radio, press, and newsreels to stoke fears of a pending “Communist uprising,” then channeled popular anxieties into political measures that eradicated civil liberties and democracy. SA (Storm Troopers) and members of the Nazi elite paramilitary formation, the SS, took to the streets to brutalize or arrest political opponents and incarcerate them in hastily established detention centers and concentration camps. Nazi thugs broke into opposing political party offices, destroying printing presses and newspapers.
Sometimes using holding companies to disguise new ownership, executives of the Nazi Party-owned publishing house, Franz Eher, established a huge empire that drove out competition and purchased newspapers at below-market prices. Some independent newspapers, particularly conservative newspapers and non-political illustrated weeklies, accommodated to the regime through self-censorship or initiative in dealing with approved topics.

Independent journalist Abby Martin reported on the riots on the ground in 2017 and uncovered that out of 84 deaths, at least 61 deaths were caused by the U.S.-backed guarimba rioters.
She reported that “factories, public transportation, socialist party offices, hospitals, and clinics, the childhood home of Chavez, the government’s housing agency, a maternity clinic, a cultural centre which gave free music lessons to youth, and food distribution centres” were all targets of the rioters.

There is no shortage of failed peace plans in occupied Palestine, all of them incorporating detailed phases and timelines, going back to the presidency of Jimmy Carter. They end the same way. Israel gets what it wants initially — in the latest case the release of the remaining Israeli hostages — while it ignores and violates every other phase until it resumes its attacks on the Palestinian people.
It is a sadistic game. A merry-go-round of death. This ceasefire, like those of the past, is a commercial break. A moment when the condemned man is allowed to smoke a cigarette before being gunned down in a fusillade of bullets.
Once Israeli hostages are released, the genocide will continue. I do not know how soon. Let’s hope the mass slaughter is delayed for at least a few weeks. But a pause in the genocide is the best we can anticipate. Israel is on the cusp of emptying Gaza, which has been all but obliterated under two years of relentless bombing. It is not about to be stopped. This is the culmination of the Zionist dream. The United States, which has given Israel a staggering $22 billion in military aid since Oct, 7, 2023, will not shut down its pipeline, the only tool that might halt the genocide.
Israel, as it always does, will blame Hamas and the Palestinians for failing to abide by the agreement, most probably a refusal — true or not — to disarm, as the proposal demands. Washington, condemning Hamas’s supposed violation, will give Israel the green light to continue its genocide to create Trump’s fantasy of a Gaza Riviera and “special economic zone” with its “voluntary”relocation of Palestinians in exchange for digital tokens.

Of the myriads of peace plans over the decades, the current one is the least serious. Aside from a demand that Hamas release the hostages within 72-hours after the ceasefire begins, it lacks specifics and imposed timetables. It is filled with caveats that allow Israel to abrogate the agreement. And that is the point. It is not designed to be a viable path to peace, which most Israeli leaders understand. Israel’s largest-circulation newspaper, Israel Hayom, established by the late casino magnate Sheldon Adelson to serve as a mouthpiece for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and champion messianic Zionism, instructed its readers not to be concerned about the Trump plan because it is only “rhetoric.”
Israel, in one example from the proposal, will “not return to areas that have been withdrawn from, as long as Hamas fully implements the agreement.”
Who decides if Hamas has “fully implemented” the agreement? Israel. Does anyone believe in Israel’s good faith? Can Israel be trusted as an objective arbitrator of the agreement? If Hamas — demonized as a terrorist group — objects, will anyone listen?
How is it possible that a peace proposal ignores the International Court of Justice’s July 2024 Advisory Opinion, which reiterated that Israel’s occupation is illegal and must end?
By what authority can the U.S. establish a “temporary transitional government,” — Trump’s and Tony Blair’s so-called “Board of Peace” — sidelining the Palestinian right to self-determination?
Who gave the U.S. the authority to send to Gaza an “International Stabilization Force,” a polite term for foreign occupation?
How are Palestinians supposed to reconcile themselves to the acceptance of an Israeli “security barrier” on Gaza’s borders, confirmation that the occupation will continue?
How can any proposal ignore the slow-motion genocide and annexation of the West Bank?
Why is Israel, which has destroyed Gaza, not required to pay reparations?
What are Palestinians supposed to make of the demand in the proposal for a “deradicalized” Gazan population? How is this expected to be accomplished? Re-education camps? Wholesale censorship? The rewriting of the school curriculum? Arresting offending Imams in mosques?
And what about addressing the incendiary rhetoric routinely employed by Israeli leaders who describe Palestinians as “human animals” and their children as “little snakes”?
“All of Gaza and every child in Gaza, should starve to death,” the Israeli rabbi Ronen Shaulov announced. “I don’t have mercy for those who, in a few years, will grow up and won’t have mercy for us. Only a stupid fifth column, a hater of Israel has mercy for future terrorists, even though today they are still young and hungry. I hope, may they starve to death, and if anyone has a problem with what I’ve said, that’s their problem.”
Israeli violations of peace agreements have historical precedents.
The Camp David Accords, signed in 1978 by Egyptian president Anwar Sadat and Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin — without the participation of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) — led to the 1979 Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty, which normalized diplomatic relations between Israel and Egypt.
Subsequent phases of the Camp David Accords, which included a promise by Israel to resolve the Palestinian question along with Jordan and Egypt, permit Palestinian self-governance in the West Bank and Gaza within five years, and end the building of Israeli colonies in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, were never implemented.
The 1993 Oslo Accords, signed in 1993, saw the PLO recognize Israel’s right to exist and Israel recognize the PLO as the legitimate representatives of the Palestinian people. Yet, what ensued was the disempowerment of the PLO and its transformation into a colonial police force. Oslo II, signed in 1995, detailed the process towards peace and a Palestinian state. But it too was stillborn. It stipulated that any discussion of illegal Jewish “settlements” were to be delayed until “final” status talks. By then, Israeli military withdrawals from the occupied West Bank were scheduled to have been completed. Governing authority was poised to be transferred from Israel to the supposedly temporary Palestinian Authority. Instead, the West Bank was carved up into Areas A, B and C. The Palestinian Authority had limited authority in Areas A and B while Israel controlled all of Area C, over 60 percent of the West Bank.
The right of Palestinian refugees to return to the historic lands that Jewish settlers seized from them in 1948 when Israel was created — a right enshrined in international law — was given up by the PLO leader Yasser Arafat. This instantly alienated many Palestinians, especially those in Gaza where 75 percent are refugees or the descendants of refugees. As a consequence, many Palestinians abandoned the PLO in favor of Hamas.
Edward Said called the Oslo Accords “an instrument of Palestinian surrender, a Palestinian Versailles” and lambasted Arafat as “the Pétainof the Palestinians.”
The scheduled Israeli military withdrawals under Oslo never took place. There were around 250,000 Jewish colonists in the West Bank when the Oslo agreement was signed. Their numbers today have increased to at least 700,000.
The journalist Robert Fisk called Oslo “a sham, a lie, a trick to entangle Arafat and the PLO into abandonment of all that they had sought and struggled for over a quarter of a century, a method of creating false hope in order to emasculate the aspiration of statehood.”
Israel unilaterally broke the last two-month-long ceasefire on March 18 of this year when it launched surprise airstrikes on Gaza. Netanyahu’s office claimed that the resumption of the military campaign was in response to Hamas’s refusal to release hostages, its rejection of proposals to extend the cease-fire and its efforts to rearm. Israel killed more than 400 people in the initial overnight assault and injured over 500, slaughtering and wounding people as they slept. The attack scuttled the second stage of the agreement, which would have seen Hamas release the remaining living male hostages, both civilians and soldiers, for an exchange of Palestinian prisoners and the establishment of a permanent ceasefire along with the eventual lifting of the Israeli blockade of Gaza.
Israel has carried out murderous assaults on Gaza for decades, cynically calling the bombardment “mowing the lawn.” No peace accord or ceasefire agreement has ever gotten in the way. This one will be no exception.
This bloody saga is not over. Israel’s goals remain unchanged: the dispossession and erasure of Palestinians from their land.
The only peace Israel intends to offer the Palestinians is the peace of the grave.

Inside Hegseth’s Effort to Limit Press Access at the Pentagon
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is at odds with the news media to a degree unseen in modern times, former Pentagon officials say.
Born in Munich in 1887, Ernst Röhm joined the German army as a teenager and served in World War I. He became acquainted with Adolf Hitler in 1919. Hitler shrewdly took note of Röhm’s intensely militaristic nature, his experience in the war and the fact that he was the leader of an extreme right-wing paramilitary organization called the Frontbann–one of many such units, called “freikorps”, that existed in Germany at the time–and he persuaded Röhm to join his fledgling Nazi party.
Röhm, along with Hitler, was among the Nazi participants in the abortive “Beer Hall Putsch” in Munich in 1923, and within a few years he took on a major role in the development of the Nazi party. He formed a group called the Sturmabteilung, or SA–the notorious “Storm Troopers”, comprised mainly of street thugs, brawlers, ex-convicts and fanatical right-wing German nationalists. Röhm turned them into a tough, disciplined military unit, fanatically devoted to Hitler and Naziism. The SA took part in many violent clashes with Nazi opponents on both the left and the right, and were responsible for the deaths of quite a few, whether as the result of street fights or outright political murders. The unit soon gained a fearsome reputation, which eventually proved to be Röhm’s undoing.
As the SA began to become more widely known and feared, Röhm wanted it to be independent of the Nazi party’s political arm and also wanted to be able to act on his own. Hitler, in his desire to exercise complete control over all facets of the party’s structure, expressly forbade this, and soon began to suspect Röhm of plotting a coup against him, especially when he discovered that most of the senior SA leadership was more devoted to Röhm than they were to him. Hitler also had instructed Röhm to tone down the increasingly radical behavior of his “brownshirts”, which were beginning to give the Nazi party a bad name (one of the reasons the party usually did so poorly in elections was the public’s revulsion at and distrust of the SA’s tactics). The situation resulted in Röhm’s resigning from the party and taking a job in South America training the Bolivian army. However, although Hitler placed men more to his liking in charge of the SA, the unit began getting more and more out of control, finally incurring the enmity of the German army, which demanded that Hitler clamp down on the SA or it would do so. Desperate to avoid any confrontation with the army–whose support he knew he would need when it came time for him to grab power–Hitler re-installed Röhm as head of the SA to bring it back under control. However, not only did the SA grow even more violent and unpredictable under Röhm, but he managed to mollify the army and even secured use of military facilities at which to train his men, whose numbers were now increased by Röhm’s absorption of several independent paramilitary groups into the SA. By this time the Nazi party was beginning to accumulate some political power in Germany, and the SA’s continuing violence and brutal tactics were threatening to undermine that power. By 1934 it had grown to more than two million members–more than 20 times the strength of the regular German army, which now looked upon it in alarm as both a rival for power and a threat to Germany itself. In addition, Röhm’s ardent socialism alienated many of the wealthy businessmen and industrialists who bankrolled the Nazi party, and his blatant homosexuality–and that of many of the SA’s top leaders–were beginning to cost Hitler support among conservative religious and political groups, which up to then had backed him strongly. Hitler also again suspected that Röhm and the SA were planning a coup against him now that they believed they were stronger than Hitler and his colleagues.
On the night of June 29, 1934, the leadership of the SA held an important meeting in Munich, which Hitler promised to attend. Instead, he sent several carloads of SS troops there, and they arrested Röhm and the other top leaders of the SA. Other arrests of SA leaders took place in cities around the country, and many others were simply shot as soon as they were located. Röhm and much of the SA leadership were thrown into prison, and Röhm himself was shot by two SS executioners in his cell when he refused to commit suicide. It is estimated that several hundred SA officials were killed that night and in the following several days, a period that has become known as the “Night of the Long Knives”, although the real numbers will never be known. The SA was disbanded, with some of its members being absorbed into the SS, and one more threat to Hitler’s grab for absolute power in Germany was eliminated.

Last week Lani Kawahara, who oversees the young adult section at Kauai’s largest library, set up her annual display to mark Banned Books Week, a national campaign that kicked off Sunday to spotlight the harms of book censorship in America.
The Lihue Public Library display featured some of the top books targeted by censorship activists, along with informational fliers produced by the American Library Association. The fliers discussed the merits of books on the organization’s target list and facts about the strength of efforts to ban books from U.S. schools and libraries, typically due to themes related to race, gender identity and sexuality. A banner topping the display read: “Freedom to Read.”
On Monday, Kawahara’s supervisor took down roughly half the display, leaving only the books and the banner intact.
“I was flabbergasted,” said Kawahara, who has worked as a librarian for 28 years. “We’ve done displays like this forever.”
This week, libraries across the U.S. are observing Banned Books Week. In Hawaii, the national event has been rebranded as a week dedicated to the “freedom to read,” an attempt to cool what has become a hot-button political issue.
New guidelines issued by the Hawaii State Public Library System ahead of the 41st annual event prohibit the use of the words “censorship” and “banned,” as well as the phrase “banned books week,” in displays at 51 public libraries across the state.
Also banned are certain props and imagery, such as caution tape and fake flames, and the use of any slogans or materials from the ALA, the professional organization that has sponsored the yearly Banned Books Week campaign since its 1984 origins.
State Librarian Stacey Aldrich said in a statement Tuesday that the language used in the Freedom to Read campaign aims to be inclusive of all library patrons.
“There are people who misunderstand ‘banned books’ or believe that we are banning books,” she said
“The data shows that the majority of book censorship attempts are now originating from organized movements,” according to the group. “Pressure groups and government entities that include elected officials, board members, and administrators initiated 72% of demands to censor books in school and public libraries.”
Last year, the most frequently challenged book was “All Boys Aren’t Blue” by George M. Johnson, which was criticized for having LGBTQ+ content and being sexually explicit . The ALA also lists the 100 most frequently challenged books from 2010 through 2019. The top titles include:

His initiative, filed in the Chamber of Deputies, sets out prison terms of three to six years and fines for anyone who “create, manipulate, transform, reproduce or disseminate images, videos, audios or digital representations” made with artificial intelligence for the purpose of “ridiculing, harassing, impersonating or damaging” a person’s “reputation or dignity.”
The punishment would increase by half if the person targeted is a public official, minor, or person with a disability, or if the content spreads widely online or causes personal, psychological, or professional harm.

Fellini noted: “Sunday’s use of chemical agents is one more reason why residents — especially those living near the ICE facility — are calling on the city to revoke the permit, given the grave public health risks created by ICE’s presence.
“We believe this is one of the most urgent labor issues of our time, as workers and organizers throughout our community face spurious arrests and violent repression while the Trump administration seeks to use these threats to suppress collective action to build a just and equitable society where workers and communities thrive.”

America-based corporations operating globally recruit their workforce and their executives, including their top ones, without regard to nationality. The CIA, one of its officials said in 1999, can no longer count on the cooperation of American corporations as it once was able to do, because the corporations view themselves as multinational and may not think it in their interests to help the U.S. government.

Summarizing their interviews with executives of 23 American multinational corporations and nonprofit organizations, James Davison Hunter and Joshua Yates conclude:
Surely these elites are cosmopolitans: they travel the world and their field of responsibility is the world. Indeed, they see themselves as ‘global citizens.’ Again and again, we heard them say that they thought of themselves more as ‘citizens of the world’ who happen to carry an American passport than as U.S. citizens who happen to work in a global organization. They possess all that is implied in the notion of the cosmopolitan. They are sophisticated, urbane and universalistic in their perspective and ethical commitments.
Together with the “globalizing elites” of other countries, these American executives inhabit a “socio-cultural bubble” apart from the cultures of individual nations and communicate with each other in a social science-y version of English, which Hunter and Yates label “global speak.”
The economic globalizers are fixated on the world as an economic unit. As Hunter and Yates report,
All these globalizing organizations, and not just the multinational corporations, operate in a world defined by ‘expanding markets’, the need for ‘competitive advantage’, ‘efficiency’, ‘cost-effectiveness’, ‘maximizing benefits and minimizing costs’, ‘niche markets’, ‘profitability’ and ‘the bottom line.’ They justify this focus on the grounds that they are meeting the need of consumers all over the world. That is their constituency.
“One thing globalization has done”, a consultant to Archer Daniels Midland said, “is to transfer the power of governments to the global consumer.” As the global market replaces the national community, the national citizen gives way to the global consumer.

The war of extermination Israel has waged on Gaza for the past two years is not a “response” to October 7; it is the continuation of a settler-colonial project that has never tolerated Palestinian existence. The destruction of Gaza’s hospitals, schools, mosques, churches, and refugee camps was justified through an elaborate architecture of deceit, where every bomb dropped was accompanied by a story meant to sanitize the killing.
Israeli propaganda began to ramp up in the early hours of Operation Flood of Al-Aqsa. It exported a singular, rehearsed narrative: that Palestinian fighters were not resisting occupation but committing atrocities so unspeakable that their annihilation became a moral duty. The Fabricated Crimes: Sexual Violence, “Beheaded Babies,” and “Weapons in Hospitals”

Then came the most grotesque fabrication of all, the story of “beheaded babies.” An Israeli i24 News correspondent, citing an unnamed soldier, claimed that forty infants had been decapitated in a kibbutz. The story was picked up by CNN, BBC, and Sky News and echoed by U.S. President Joe Biden, who falsely said he had seen photographic proof. Days later, the White House retracted his statement.
There were no photos, no witnesses, and no evidence. Even the Israeli newspaper Haaretz confirmed that “politicians and soldiers contributed to spreading false stories to fuel public anger.” But the image of the “slaughtered child” had already done its work; it branded Palestinians as monsters and turned genocide into a moral crusade.
When that narrative collapsed, new horrors were invented: claims that Palestinian fighters had burned children alive in ovens, invoking Holocaust imagery to solidify Western emotional allegiance. Many of these “images” were later exposed as AI-generated fakes, yet they circulated for weeks on prime-time television in Israel, France, and the United States.

To justify bombing nearly every medical facility in the Strip, Israel claimed Hamas had built tunnels under hospitals and stored weapons in their basements. Alexis Deswaef, one of the two vice-presidents of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) currently on hunger strike alongside Aziz Rhali, was injured by a water cannon used by the Israeli navy during an intimidation maneuver against the ship on which he was sailing. FIDH member, Adalah, is providing legal representation for hundreds of Flotilla detainees and has documented these incidents. Representatives of embassies and consulates who have met with their nationals, participants in the Flotilla, have also relayed these messages, and Flotilla participants who have already been deported are speaking with the media about this abuse, particularly that inflicted on Swedish activist Greta Thunberg.
In addition, Israeli Minister of Internal Security Itamar Ben Gvir appeared on video on the evening of October 2nd, showing the detained members of the Flotilla, as he insulted them and accused them in Hebrew of being terrorists. Detainees were also presented with documents written in Hebrew, which they were ordered to sign. Those who refused to sign these documents continue to be detained.

Two Years of Genocide: The guilt we live with from the miserable safety of exile
Every day, when we turn on the news, we thank God we survived the genocide. And every day, we regret it.
A few days before the genocide began, I had a visa to enter the UK. I was happy and beyond excited, as I was planning on going to London to represent Mondoweiss and talk about the stories I tell. I was excited to meet some of my readers and to engage with the audience that follows my stories. I felt secure in the idea that I would briefly leave my wife, son, and elderly mother behind in our large family home. They were surrounded by loved ones, and I wouldn’t be away for more than two weeks.
Then the war came, and it changed everything. The crossings were closed overnight, and the primary concern of people in Gaza became survival and finding enough food and water.
From the second month of the war, all of us realized that this war was completely different from anything we’d experienced before. We were sure of it when the Israeli army insisted on evacuating the entire northern half of Gaza, which included our home.
Now, the family home we once had, the window I always woke up beside, the lemon, olive, and fig trees that surrounded our building — all of it is gone now.
At the beginning of the war, I did not think of leaving Gaza. As Palestinians, we know what exile means. But this changed after my mother fell ill. She was hospitalized and died shortly thereafter because treatment was unavailable. What my mother needed was so simple: a few dietary supplements and some medications would have been enough to save her life. I scoured the entire area between Rafah and Khan Younis in an attempt to find them. I failed.
That made me think: what if I fail in finding food for my son tomorrow? Would I be able to watch him die of hunger before my eyes, just as I watched my mother die of illness? How much was I willing to keep facing this fate, again and again, until I have no one left? I decided then and there that we must survive.
My son hadn’t turned one yet. He had committed no sin to deserve this fate. Why should my child and all the children of Gaza live under these harsh conditions? Surely, if I took him away from his homeland so he could be safe, it wouldn’t be a crime, would it? Surely this wouldn’t be considered a betrayal of our homeland?
Leaving Gaza was the hardest decision of my life. After much hardship, we were finally able to secure passage to Egypt, where we spent a year and a half. Exile set in, settling in our minds and making itself felt in every step.
But I wasn’t the one who was most affected by our displacement. It was my son.
He’s two-and-a-half now, and he’s never had the chance to get to know his neighborhood or grow up with his cousins. He’s never run out to the street to play with the other children in the neighborhood. He never got to stroll through the market with me or to tag along on family visits. I couldn’t even celebrate his first birthday in our home. I had a huge party planned, but we ended up celebrating it in an abandoned home in Yibna refugee camp, whose glass was broken in the dead of winter. My son has no friends. He hasn’t been able to find even one in exile to visit and play with. We’re his only friends, myself and his mother, and my son was robbed of his childhood.

It drives me mad with guilt, even if that was the price of survival. My child is now alone after having been surrounded by a family that was his world — aunts, uncles, cousins. His older cousins used to come over day after day to play with him and his toys. Now, whenever I look at him, I know he will never again have the love we left behind in Gaza.
Being forced to leave behind your home, your siblings, and countless loved ones carries a finality that is too much to bear. Gaza is the only place in the world where he could have found that kind of love, and we left it behind.
Now, I talk to him about Gaza and browse the photos that connect us to home, where our whole lives have been spent. I showed him picture after picture and explained a great deal. I tell him: Look, this is Gaza! This is our home, our land. We’re going to return one day. I try not to show him the images of destruction. We always watch the news on television, and whenever a report comes on, we remember and talk about Gaza and all the areas that appear on the screen.
He has picked up all these words while sitting with us. When he sees destruction on the TV screen, he loudly says: “Gaza, Gaza, our home.” But I don’t want him to think of Gaza as a place of death and destruction. It is the most beautiful place on earth.
For long months, I often thought twice before eating anything: I told myself that my family back home is unable to find a piece of bread right now.
What is strange is that we are the owners of the land. Every time I discover a new country, I realize that the land from which we were driven out is the most remarkable and ancient of lands in the world. It is a place blessed with geographical and natural diversity. We have everything, from the mountain against the sea to the rolling fields, thick forests, and sprawling deserts. We have everything that makes us the owners of a free country. The only thing stopping us is the occupation.
Whenever we watch the news, we thank God that we survived. And we regret it every day.
