Alessandra Korap Munduruku, 38, is a member of the Munduruku Indigenous group of Sawré Muybu. She is the president of the Pariri Indigenous Association, which supports communities in the Tapajós River region. Alessandra previously worked as a teacher and, over the past decade, became involved in the fight against deforestation, hydroelectric development, and contamination of the Tapajós River. Initially, she encountered stiff resistance to a woman becoming involved in the movement to protect the territory, but she persisted and, gradually, changed the paradigm; she eventually became the first woman coordinator of the Pariri Indigenous Association. In 2018, Alessandra decided to study law to better represent and protect Munduruku communities and the Amazon rainforest from further illegal extraction by mining, logging, and drilling interests, and other threats to their territories.

“There are countries who want to fight against climate change and deforestation and so they’re sending money to the Brazilian government, but the government is in favour of deforestation and against protecting indigenous land, and it is supporting agribusiness and helping them to encroach further and further on our territories. This is a huge concern. What we need is for that money to go to protecting indigenous land and preventing deforestation.”

“I took steps to defeat Bolsonaro with great pride,” Alessandra said. “I was part of it because we couldn’t stand suffering any longer.”
Bolsonaro’s environmentally hostile policies over the past four years meant no Indigenous lands were demarcated (officially recognized by the government) and illegal mining in protected areas hit record levels. Alessandra regularly stood up to Bolsonaro’s policies and rhetoric by speaking at international events and participating in local protests.
Now, under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, she sees the creation of the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples and the increasing numbers of Indigenous representatives in Congress as progress. However, it’s “not enough,” Alessandra said.
“We want much more. We want the demarcation of our territory, we want the government to consult us for every decision taken that could affect us.”
