For Monroe, Jefferson, Adams and other presidents, the United States was an example for the world, and the Monroe Doctrine was a vehicle to promote U.S. principles. As such it became the precursor of the ‘Manifest Destiny’, a term coined by journalist John O’Sullivan in his 1845 essay in support of annexing Texas. He argued: it is “the right of our manifest destiny to overspread and to possess the whole of the continent which Providence has given us for the development of the great experiment of liberty and federated self-government entrusted to us.” U.S. leaders believed that given the virtuosity of its people and institutions, God had assigned the U.S. with the duty to shape the rest of the continent and the world by expanding its dominion and spreading democracy and capitalism. Deeply racist, it posited the ‘civilising’ of indigenous peoples of all North and South America, including dispossessing the former from their lands—all predicated on Anglo-American racial superiority.
U.S. territorial expansion, at the expense of indigenous lands and Mexico, was staggering. From the 13 original colonies in 1783 (1,100,00km2), after adding the Louisiana Purchase (2,140,000km2, 1803), Florida (170,310km2, 1819), Texas (695,596km2, 1838) and 55 per cent of Mexico’s territory (California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico parts of Oklahoma, Kansas and Wyoming, 1,370,000km2, 1848), the U.S.’s geographical size increased fourfold to 5,475,906km2. Ominously for Latin America’s future, the U.S. used military means to annex Texas (Mexican-Texan War, 1834-36) and half of Mexico (Mexican-American War, 1845-48).
1823 also marked the year when annexationist and future president John Quincy Adams drew his famous ripe fruit analogy:
if an apple severed by its native tree cannot choose but fall to the ground, Cuba, forcibly disjoined from its own unnatural connection with Spain, and incapable of self-support, can gravitate only towards the North American Union.
The Monroe Doctrine: Two hundred years too long
Michel de Montaigne’s wisdom that ‘each man calls barbarism whatever is not his own practice’. For the European invaders of North America, the mantle of Christian civilisation bestowed legitimacy to actions and distinguished their violence from that of the ‘savages’. The values of civilisation restricted violence against other ‘civilised’ peoples, while authorising virtually unlimited violence against ‘primitive’ peoples.
The human test subjects of Unit 731 were criminals, political prisoners, Communists, or civilians—usually pregnant women, children, and the elderly—who were considered useful for experiments and were rounded up under trumped-up charges. Seventy percent of these victims were Chinese, while others were Korean, Mongolian, and Russian, and a few might have been Allied prisoners of war. They were called marutas by the researchers, or “logs”, because the local Manchurians were told that the facility was a lumber mill. Research findings discovered at Unit 731 were occasionally published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, where the articles claimed the experiments had been performed on Manchurian monkeys.
Whether these prisoners were called logs or monkeys, their human suffering was immense. One of the most common experiments at Unit 731 was the vivisection of diseased bodies. Researchers found the most virulent strains of disease by infecting prisoners, usually by injecting them with “vaccines” or feeding them contaminated food, and killing those prisoners who recovered quickly from their illnesses.
A Nanjing Massacre survivor Xia Shuqin said, “I was only eight back then. The Japanese stabbed me three times, in here, here and in the back. I passed out and when I woke up after a very long time, I saw blood all over myself, and I didn’t know what had happened to me (after I passed out).”
Northeastern China’s Changchun City witnessed more crimes by Japanese soldiers.
A germ lab called Unit 100 used Chinese people to study the impact of livestock bacteria on humans. It worked closely with another notorious germ lab; Unit 731. Kuniaki Ushigoe at Japan-China Oral History and Culture Institute said, “The germ weapons of Unit 731 were directly targeted at human beings while Unit 100 used both humans and animals to research fatal weapons.”
“My father was a soldier, and he felt very sorry for what they had done to the Chinese people. I have the same feeling,” said Misako Watanabe, daughter of a Japanese soldier.
Besides germ warfare, Japanese soldiers also used over 200,000 Chinese women as sex slaves during the war. These women were raped, tortured and often murdered.
Su Zhiliang, director of World War II Sex Slaves Studies Center at Shanghai Normal University, told CGTN, “When these women’s health had been totally ruined, they would be put in a drill ground and the soldiers would use them for bayonet practice.”
In 1938, Japan launched devastating bombing raids on Chongqing – the Kuomintang government’s provisional capital at that time. The air attack raid was one of the longest in the history of WWII. The city was nearly wiped off the map, and over 16,000 people lost their lives in the bombings.

By the close of the Indian Wars in the late 19th century, fewer than 238,000 Indigenous people remained, a sharp decline from the estimated 5 million to 15 million living in North America when Columbus arrived in 1492.

In a shocking interview with journalist Jack Wallis Simmons, Yossi Cohen, who formerly led the Israeli Mossad, bragged that Israel has “booby trapped” equipment in every country around the world, similar to the explosives implanted in pager devices used in the 2024 pager attack in Lebanon.
Israeli newspaper Maariv reported, “Cohen, who served as head of the Mossad from 2016 to 2021 … referred to the method of ‘manipulative equipment’– equipment that is not only booby-trapped but is used to gather covert intelligence and disrupt it – a method he developed between 2002 and 2004.”
The paper went on to note:
According to Cohen, this method has been successfully implemented in many operations, including Operation Pager, which hit Hezbollah, and in various countries around the world with the aim of penetrating the supply chain of Israel’s enemies. ‘Do you know how much ‘treated’ equipment we have now in these countries? You can’t imagine, but I know. It’s a tremendous level of intelligence, one for which I haven’t slept for 38 years. That’s what I’ve done day and night every day for more than 38 years, if you include military service.” To the host’s question about which countries are involved, Cohen answered: ‘In every country you can think of,’ he said.
In the interview, Yossi Cohen boasted, “Pagers, Walkie Talkies, you know how many equipment, I mean, treated equipment we have in these countries”.
When Jack Wallis Simmons asks, “You mean booby trapped equipment?”, Cohen replies, “Not only booby trapped, manipulated equipment”.
And when Simmons asks, “In which countries are you talking about? Cohen replies, “In all the countries you can imagine”.
Cohen went on to brag, “The manipulated equipment method, we have already used it in (the) second Lebanon war”.
What Cohen is referring to was Israel’s terrorist attack in Lebanon, in September of last year, where Israel planted explosives in pagers used by members of Hezbollah’s political wing, and detonated them in public places, including grocery stores and hospitals, injuring thousands and killing 12 people, including children and hospital workers.
Human Rights Watch documented at the time:
Thousands of pagers simultaneously exploded across Lebanon and parts of Syria on September 17, 2024, resulting in at least 12 deaths, including at least two children and two health workers, and at least 2,800 injuries, according to Lebanon’s Ministry of Health.
Photographs and videos filmed by victims and witnesses to the incident and reviewed by Human Rights Watch showed pagers exploding in various locales, such as grocery stores. Other videos that appear to be linked to the incident show adults and children in emergency rooms with severe penetrating traumatic injuries to their heads, torsos. and limbs, and other injuries consistent with the detonation of high explosives.
