The father of a 2-year-old boy who drowned in the Siletz River in March after last being seen playing in his yard has been charged with neglect.

A massive search effort took place last spring when Dane Paulsen went missing from his parents’ property along the Siletz River on March 1. Investigators later said the toddler appeared to have gone down a river bank and slipped into the water.
His parents, Chamet Jackson and Aaron Paulsen, who own the Chowder Bowl restaurant in Depoe Bay, told deputies he was last seen playing in the front yard of their house bordered by the river and Highway 229.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s office, bands of Siletz neighbors and people from across the county spent 10 days searching for the missing boy, combing forest land, the family property, and the river with divers and boats.

The search came to a halt after 11 days when a volunteer diver from California who specializes in recovering bodies from rivers and lakes found the boy three miles downstream from his home. Officials determined that the cause of Dane’s death was by drowning and that he had no other injuries.
More than six months after Dane died, a Lincoln County grand jury on Oct. 16 issued a secret indictment of Paulsen on one count of second-degree child neglect, which is a misdemeanor. His mother has not been charged with any crime. The filing became public Wednesday.
The indictment said that Paulsen while in “custody or control of Dane Paulsen, did unlawfully and with criminal negligence leave Dane Paulsen, a child under the age of 10 years, unattended in or at a place, for such period of time as was likely to endanger the health or welfare of said child.”
The Lincoln County district attorney’s office and the sheriff’s department did not respond to requests for comment or more details about the case and investigation.
Lincoln Chronicle was unable to reach the lawyer representing Paulsen. Dane’s mother, Chamet Jackson, told KATU News that her husband had just gotten home when Dane went missing and denied he played a role in their son’s death.
A warrant for Paulsen’s arrest was filed Oct. 20. His bail is set for $20,000 and his arraignment is scheduled Monday, Nov. 3. According to Lincoln County jail logs, he is not currently in custody.

The Justice Department placed two D.C.-based federal prosecutors on leave after they filed court papers calling the Jan. 6 Capitol siege a “riot” perpetrated by a “mob,” three sources familiar with the matter told CBS News on Wednesday.
The papers were submitted Tuesday in the case of Taylor Taranto, who was pardoned by President Trump on Capitol riot charges earlier this year but was later convicted of livestreaming a bomb threat. He was arrested in 2023 while livestreaming himself driving around former President Barack Obama’s D.C. neighborhood while armed, according to prosecutors.

Nigerian Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka says US revoked his visa

Delaware Gov. Matt Meyer has declared a state of emergency to allow state funding for SNAP recipients on a weekly basis.
The declaration comes as federal funding for the food assistance program is set to pause Saturday, Nov. 1, due to the federal government shutdown.
Meyer said Wednesday morning that Delaware should have enough money to fund SNAP for its recipients through November.

Kennedy Jr., the secretary of health and human services, has elevated. In his eyes, this paradoxical relationship to expertise is exactly what qualifies her for the job.

Jeffrey Epstein facilitated efforts to open a backchannel between Israel and the Kremlin during the Syrian civil war, according to leaked emails from former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak.
The trove of emails, exchanged at the height of the Syrian civil war between 2013 and 2016, reveal Epstein’s successful efforts to secure a private meeting between Barak and Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a Russian-brokered end to the conflict, including winning Russian support for a negotiated removal of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Epstein was an invaluable resource for Israel’s former prime minister, who also served as head of intelligence and defense minister throughout his career, sharing whispers from within Russian elite circles and intel on Putin’s interlocutors in Europe and the U.S—and even advising him on how to engage with the Mossad. Barak, fresh out of his role as Israeli defense minister, built a deep portfolio of investments and business relationships around the world with Epstein’s help.
On February 21, 2014, Epstein wrote to Barak, “with civil unrest exploding in ukraine syria, somolia [sic], libya, and the desperation of those in power, isn’t this perfect for you.” Barak replied: “You’re right [in] a way. But not simple to transform it into a cash flow. A subject for Saturday.”
These efforts also provided cover for covert diplomacy on behalf of the Israeli government. Together, Barak and Epstein sought to pressure the Obama administration to either intervene directly in the Syrian war, or make concessions to the Kremlin in exchange for Assad’s graceful exit. In their exchanges, Epstein expressed his frustration at the Obama administration’s failures to contain Tehran, as the two men searched for opportunities to promote U.S. strikes on Iran.
Despite securing a sit-down with Putin in the summer of 2013, they did not succeed in convincing Russia to support Assad’s ouster, but their negotiations set the stage for U.S.-Russia cooperation on disarmament of Syria’s chemical weapons arsenal a few months later.
