RPG’s to the rescue: Urban Warfare Requires Specialized Weapons

The Russian company Bazalt has introduced two new members to the RPG family of weapon – the RPG-28 anti-tank tandem rocket and the RMG multi-purpose, anti-material rocket. Both are launched from disposable canisters. The RMG uses a tandem warhead, with thermobaric main charge optimized for multi-purpose anti-structure applications. It is capable of breaching a brick wall at a range over 500 m’, penetrating 300 mm of reinforced concrete, or over 100 mm or homogeneous steel armor.

Western origin urban assault weapons were also displayed by Rafael, Dynamit-Nobel of Germany, U.S. based Raytheon, Nammo from Norway and the Swedish company Saab. Similar to the Russian design, western systems are derived from existing anti-tank shoulder-fired rocket launchers, namely the Panzerfaust, Matador, SMAW (B-300), LAW-72, and AT-4. The urban assault derivatives of these weapons are less of tank killers, but have much more powerful effect when buildings, bunkers or soft vehicles are targeted.

Images from the al-Shati refugee camp north of Gaza City showed heavy damage to buildings after an airstrike with facades blown off by blasts, while people including a barefooted young girl searched through rubble for belongings. Toppled poles created a web of powerless electric wires on the ground.

Much of Gaza has been reduced to ruin and UN-backed experts have declared famine in some parts. Hundreds of thousands of civilians remain in Gaza City out of an estimated population of about 1 million before Israel’s most recent offensive.

While data centers make up about four percent of U.S. electricity demand today, that’s expected to triple in the next three years.

As a result of this increasing demand, electricity prices are rapidly following suit. According to an independent market monitor for PJM , the world’s largest energy market that covers 13 U.S. states from Illinois to Washington, D.C., it’s estimated that data centers were responsible for an added $9.3 billion in additional costs for ratepayers.

But more often than not, residents are left in the dark about the details of these plans. Negotiations surrounding the planning and construction of these centers are often shrouded by non-disclosure agreements. Residents often lack crucial information about the new costs these centers would incur or the companies behind the centers — or a meaningful voice in the conversation.

Meanwhile, the companies behind data centers, tech giants like Amazon and Meta, are frequently able to score reduced rates with localities and utilities companies for themselves while consumers must grapple with the rate increases. For example, one utility company in Louisiana proposed spending over $3 billion on a new power plant to meet demand for a data center that Meta had proposed.

“Meta has signed a 15 year deal and it only obligates them to pay for about half of that $3 to $4 billion of infrastructure, which means that there’s a big risk that everyone else in Louisiana will get stuck with the rest of that bill,” Ari Peskoe, a professor at Harvard Law School and author of a recent report on how data centers affect energy markets, told More Perfect Union.

“Meta saw an opportunity to negotiate a massive data center deal without the public having any input,” Tyson Slocum, director of Public Citizen’s Energy Program, “And to this day, there is still massive amounts of detail about that massive Meta AI complex that the people of Louisiana have no information about.”
