The US Patriot Act was passed by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President George W. Bush in 2001, following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It was enacted with broad bipartisan support, with the House and Senate approving the measure shortly after the attacks.
Oh, it was Trump?
Just 45 days after the attacks of September 11, 2001, a panicked Congress passed, with virtually no debate, the USA Patriot Act. The law amounted to an overnight revision of the nation’s surveillance laws that vastly expanded the government’s authority to spy on its own citizens, while simultaneously reducing checks and balances on those powers.
For years, we had little official information about how the government interpreted the overly broad surveillance bill. On June 6, 2013, the first of Edward Snowden’s disclosures confirmed what some privacy advocates had long feared: Under Section 215 of the Patriot Act, the U.S. government collects, on a daily basis, the phone records of millions of Americans. These records include the numbers dialed and received, the dates and times of those calls, and their duration. That program was ruled unlawful by an appeals court in May 2015.
Section 215 is one of the three sections of the Patriot Act that are scheduled to sunset on June 1, 2015. This long-abused provision of the law has been a failure by nearly every measure. The author of the law has publicly stated that it was never intended to facilitate mass, suspicionless surveillance. It has not played an essential role in stopping any attack. And it has enabled an unprecedented surveillance superstructure that violates Americans’ rights to privacy, free speech, and free association.

- USA PATRIOT Improvement and Reauthorization Act of 2005:Signed into law in 2006, this act made some original provisions permanent, modified others, and extended certain authorities, setting a new expiration date for some provisions in 2009.

Donald Trump today designated Antifa as a “domestic terrorist organization” — the first such designation ever, as far as I can tell.
In an explainer released by the White House, it says that “Antifa’s terror is part of the trend of Radical Left violence.” The title, “President Trump Isn’t Backing Down from Crushing Radical Left Violence,” doesn’t leave much room for interpretation.
Without ever defining what Antifa (short for Anti-Fascist) is as an organization, Trump’s executive order directs the federal government to “investigative, disrupt, and dismantle any and all illegal operations” conducted by the group. Trump’s previous FBI Director, Christopher Wray, said once that Antifa is “more of an ideology or a movement than an organization.”
But in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s murder, national security officials tell me, the Trump administration feels especially empowered to focus its ire on the so-called radical left, even though, as I’ve written, it isn’t at all clear that the alleged Utah shooter was left or right.
The “designation” is normally used for “foreign terrorist organizations,” which are defined in law. Such a designation not only focuses law enforcement and intelligence on such organizations (e.g., Hamas, Al Qaeda, ISIS), but also unleashes international sanctions and investigations into finances and movement.

Dude goes two years refusing to call a genocide a genocide, then issues a statement which begins by placing blame for the genocide on the victims of said genocide. He also lumps the hundreds of IDF troops slain in the attack in with “innocent people”, ignores the large percentage of the death toll that would have been killed by Israeli troops under the Hannibal Directive, and babbles about Israel’s “right to defend itself” against an occupied population.
The rest of the statement is standard liberal Zionist fare, acknowledging the horror of the situation in Gaza while blaming it all on Benjamin Netanyahu and not the murderous apartheid state which would be doing what it’s doing with or without Netanyahu. It’s just progressive-sounding Israel apologia accompanied by a denunciation driven by the inability to escape finally calling this thing what it is.
This is the face of what passes for the “left” in modern US politics. Absolutely ghoulish.
