Failing to publish a report of record that stands up to rigorous scientific review of past national assessments is significant, says Dr. Mijin Cha, a climate and environmental justice professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz and a fellow author on this year’s assessment.
“We’re losing our status as the premiere data and research country,” Dr. Cha said.
Many in the scientific community have begun to talk about how to move forward, but fears remain that the Trump administration will proceed with its own report, assigning authors that represent alternative viewpoints on climate change.

In his ruling, Kasubhai found that the BLM had based some of its analysis of the logging’s impact on “guesswork,” which “distorted the data” in the analysis, rendering it “irrational and inadequate” under the National Environmental Policy Act. The bureau also failed to gather site-specific data with regards to the logging plan’s impact on animals that are considered threatened or endangered, such as the bald eagle and spotted owl.

Trump’s budget calls for the elimination of one program that some of the nation’s 5,000 Meals on Wheels groups rely on: Community development block grants, a $3 billion program that started in the Ford administration to give states and cities more flexibility in how they combat poverty.
But Trump’s proposal — known as the “skinny budget” because it’s the first, vague outline of a more formal submission to come — is largely silent about the program that provides the vast majority of federal funding for senior services.
“The budget will adversely impact older adults,” said Sandy Markwood, CEO of the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging. “We just don’t know how much.”
Here’s why. The majority of Meals on Wheels programs get most of their federal funding through the Administration for Community Living, an agency of the Department of Health and Human Services that serves the elderly and disabled. On Thursday, autonomous trucking firm Aurora announced it launched commercial service in Texas under its first customers, Uber Freight and Hirschbach Motor Lines, which delivers time- and temperature-sensitive freight. Both companies conducted test runs with Aurora, including safety drivers to monitor the self-driving technology dubbed “Aurora Driver.” Aurora’s new commercial service will no longer have safety drivers.
“We founded Aurora to deliver the benefits of self-driving technology safely, quickly, and broadly, said Chris Urmson, CEO and co-founder of Aurora, in a release on Thursday. “Now, we are the first company to successfully and safely operate a commercial driverless trucking service on public roads.”
