Why Is the Pentagon “Weaponizing Insects”?

The Pentagon Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, DARPA, is funding a program with the bizarre name “Insect Allies.” Dr. Blake Bextine of DARPA describes the program as “leveraging a natural and efficient two-step delivery system to transfer modified genes to plants: insect vectors and the plant viruses they transmit.” DARPA claims the program is to provide “scalable, readily deployable, and generalizable countermeasures against potential natural and engineered threats to the food supply with the goals of preserving the US crop system.” Check the language: scalable, readily deployable…

Under the DARPA project, Genetic Alteration Agents or viruses will be introduced into the insect population to directly influence the genetic makeup of crops. DARPA plans to use leaf hoppers, white flies, and aphids to introduce select viruses into crops. Among other dubious claims they say it will help farmers combat “climate change.” What no one can answer, especially as neither the Pentagon nor the US FDA are asking, is how will the genetically engineered viruses in the insects interact with other microorganisms in the environment? If crops are constantly being inundated by genetically modified viruses, how could this could alter the genetics and immune systems of humans who depend on the crops?

The Science article points out that there has been no scientific discussion, let alone oversight, of the safety of such methods of gene-editing in open fields or even whether there are any benefits at all. The US Department of Agriculture flatly rejects any health or safety testing of gene-edited plants or insects.

“As a result, the program may be widely perceived as an effort to develop biological agents for hostile purposes and their means of delivery, which—if true—would constitute a breach of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC).” So far $27 million US taxpayer dollars have been spent on “Insect Allies.”

The vaccine group displayed ten times higher risk of meningitis and cerebral malaria, and a doubling in the risk of death compared to the placebo group. Even if the shots “work,” they do not achieve any temporary or long term sterilizing immunity or significant efficacious benefit, so in no way would it reduce the actual disease burden.

This news comes out at the same time as a new Public Citizen report warning of the likely imminent arrival of autonomous weapons systems which will kill people with minimal instruction from human pilots, saying,

“The most serious worry involving autonomous weapons is that they inherently dehumanize the people targeted and make it easier to tolerate widespread killing, including in violation of international human rights law.”

It’s a whole set of concepts, technologies, policies, and talent that’s advancing a core U.S. warfighting function.” And, promises Hicks, CJADC2 is just part of the DOD’s commitment to promoting innovation with AI at its core.

In June, the DOD issued its “Data, Analytics, and Artificial Intelligence Adoption Strategy.” The subtitle of the document is “Accelerating Decision Advantage,” which highlights the core message of the strategy: AI is a powerful tool to enhance DOD warfighting and other capabilities, and the Pentagon must accelerate its development and adoption of AI technologies. “The latest advancements in data, analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies enable leaders to make better decisions faster, from the boardroom to the battlefield,” states the plan’s discussion of the strategic environment. “Therefore, accelerating the adoption of these technologies presents an unprecedented opportunity to equip leaders at all levels of the Department with the data they need, and harness the full potential of the decision-making power of our people.

“When we think of drones, we imagine the war on terror, unmanned surveillance planes dropping bombs on tribal regions of Pakistan or Afghanistan.”

Yet the future of drones may look quite different than what we think of today. Many organizations are piloting drones for local police precincts, or animal surveillance. Between the Department of Defense and the contractors hoping to revolutionize the drone for domestic uses, the United States will need a number of pilots certified to operate these unmanned vehicles.

With this post I am suggesting that the great experiment is not an experiment of a system that rewards hard work and provides opportunity for all. Instead, I believe the “Great” Experiment is an ongoing attempt to prove the hypothesis that a ruling class can titrate freedoms to their subjects to create calculated and tenuous comfort so that fear of losing those freedoms motivates the subjects to sustain the engine that supports the power and wealth of the ruling class.

In her book, Masterless Men: Poor Whites and Slavery in the Antebellum South, Keri Leigh Merritt writes about how aristocrats set poor whites against blacks in the 1840’s and 1850’s in America.

Since the attacks, my sister and I got into a big argument and my brother is actively not speaking to me. I was arrested at Grand Central in one of the cease-fire protests, and I texted both of them to let them know because I didn’t want them to learn about it on the news. My brother did not respond.

My sister and I get along very well. She’s eight years older. I‘ve always considered her to be a good role model for me. When I came out, she went to bat for me. Outside of this, I respect how she approaches conflict. She’s usually willing to have difficult conversations.

I was a little surprised at how passionately she felt. After the attacks, she was raising money for Israeli aid — IDF soldiers included in that. And I was going the total opposite way. I posted on Facebook — purposely, because it’s less of an echo chamber; it’s more people I grew up with — that I didn’t want this done in my name, that I grieved the people in Israel who had been killed, and I didn’t want that grief and that outrage to be fueling genocide. My sister told me her very strongly that I had broken her heart. She thinks even having this conversation about Palestinian rights means Hamas is winning because that’s what they want.

My mom just ignores whatever I say about it. My dad made a joke about the fact that I got arrested, something along the lines of, if I wasn’t in prison anymore, I was welcome to join them the next weekend. It’s a very Jewish thing to joke about this.

Armed With Hair Spray

I am a Palestinian with family in the West Bank. They’re scared. They don’t leave the house. I’ve lived in the U.S. for 37 years. I’m one of very few Palestinians and women who wear a hijab in my place of work. People whom I work with on a daily basis now barely look at me. It has felt like I cannot speak, and if I do, I have to be very careful what I say and whom I say it to. The leadership at my work has publicly villainized the protesters. They’ve said anyone who goes to a protest is celebrating the deaths of Israelis.

There are some colleagues whom I worry about if I have to go to a meeting or be on any calls with them and they try to corner me and say, “Hey, do you support what happened on October 7? Do you support Hamas?” I remember what it was like after 9/11, when I was constantly having to prove myself. I had to be more American than anyone else. Even something as simple as posting “Free Gaza” is seen as hate. You have to stand with Israel or you’re a terrorist. Either we have to bite our tongues and not mourn the people who are dying in our families, or we have to criticize our own people for being killed in order for Americans and New Yorkers not to attack us. People are so scared to mourn. I will not put on headphones when I’m going home. I have to be super-vigilant. I started carrying a mini hair spray in my purse because pepper spray is illegal in New York. Hair spray allows us to get away from a situation that can potentially put us in danger.

For many years, the kibbutz society in Israel represented the ‘liberal Israel’ people would use to highlight the ‘beautiful Israel’, and many would tell of their as volunteers in one of the kibbutzim or another – this includes Bernie Sanders. Of course, kibbutzim were much else than that – they have been central tools in the ethnic cleansing of Palestine from the beginning. Hundreds of these kibbutzes, including Kibbutz Givat Haim Ichud, where I was born and raised, were established upon the ruins of ethnically cleansed Palestinian villages to prevent the return of the Palestinian refugees and create new “facts on the ground.”
