There is no effective health care system left in Gaza. Infants are dying. Children are having their limbs amputated without anesthesia. Thousands of cancer patients and those in need of dialysis lack treatment. The last cancer hospital in Gaza has ceased functioning. An estimated 50,000 pregnant women have no safe place to give birth. They undergo cesarean sections without anesthesia. Miscarriage rates are up 300 percent since the Israeli assault began. The wounded bleed to death. There is no sanitation or clean water. Hospitals have been bombed and shelled. Nasser Hospital, one of the last functioning hospitals in Gaza, is “near collapse.” Clinics, along with ambulances – 79 in Gaza and over 212 in the West Bank – have been destroyed. Some 400 doctors, nurses, medics and healthcare workers have been killed — more than the total of all healthcare workers killed in conflicts around the world combined since 2016. “Pentagon Puts Out Call for Swarming Attack Drones That Could Blunt a Taiwan Invasion”

The U.S. military has taken the next step in building thousands of lethal sea-borne attack drones that could be key to deterring a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.

On Monday, the Defense Innovation Unit put out a solicitation for companies to submit pitches for small unmanned surface vehicles that could tie into the Pentagon’s Replicator initiative, a defense official confirmed to USNI News on Tuesday.

DIU’s PRIME – Production-Ready, Inexpensive, Maritime Expeditionary – will buy drones in bulk to respond to a Navy operational need for small autonomous attack craft capable of “intercepting” enemy vessels at high speeds.

“This is their effort to try to get some new kinetic, lethal USV[s] fielded that can be employed probably in a western Pacific context – maybe the Strait of Taiwan,” naval analyst Bryan Clark told USNI News on Tuesday.

“They want to go out to the commercial world and say, ‘Alright, what do you got in terms of kinetic, lethal USVs that can be produced at scale’.”

Several jurors hugged Erin Andrews and at least one appeared to get an autograph after the panel awarded the sportscaster and TV show host $55 million over a nude video a stalker secretly recorded in a hotel and posted online.

The jury deliberated Monday and found that the stalker and the companies should share the blame. They said the convicted stalker, Michael David Barrett, was responsible for 51 percent of the verdict and the hotel owner and former operator were responsible for the rest.

Barrett’s father Francis, who lives in Milwaukie, says his son won’t have the money to pay the judgment.

A reporter from the station, did, however, speak with a neighbor who said, “That’s some pretty serious criminal activity and violence against a woman. Being a mom and having girls and kids, I’m not comfortable with someone like that living right across the street and right near this park.”

Michael Barrett was found guilty of federal stalking charges when he sawed a peephole at the Nashville hotel in 2008 and spied on Andrews while she was nude. He confessed to requesting the room next to hers and creating the peephole.

Barrett uploaded videos of Andrews nude online, which were then viewed millions of times. His defense claimed that media exposure that stemmed from the uploads benefitted Andrews career.

More than 152 of UNRWA’s employees in Gaza — including school principals, teachers, health workers, a gynecologist, engineers, support staff and a psychologist — have been killed since the Israeli attacks began. Over 141 UNRWA facilities have been bombed into rubble. The death toll is the largest loss of staff during a conflict in the U.N.’s history.

A group of 100 Israeli doctors in November 2023 defended the bombing of hospitals in Gaza, claiming they were used as Hamas command centers, a charge Israel has been unable to verify. 

The deans of U.S. medical schools and leading medical organizations, especially the American Medical Association (AMA) have joined the ranks of universities, law schools, churches and the media to turn their backs on the Palestinians. The AMA shut down a debate on a ceasefire resolution among its members and has called for “medical neutrality,” although it abandoned “medical neutrality” to denounce Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Latin phrase that means “first, do no harm.” This is a commonly taught principle in healthcare. In fact, the Hippocratic Oath, taken by doctors, promises they will abstain from doing harm to their patients. The premise is it may be better to NOT do something or to do nothing at all at the risk of causing more harm than good.

The precautionary principle is, at its simplest, a modern restatement of the classical Hippocratic oath, “I will keep them from harm and injustice,” which is often summarized as “first, do no harm.” However, the “precautionary principle” is more than a dictum for individual actions; rather, it is intended to guide the behavior of institutions and nations. And, unlike the Hippocratic oath and its modern equivalents, it applies to both human and environmental health.

Many commentators argue that the precautionary principle originally emerged from Germany in the mid-1970s. A few argue that its development started at the 1972 Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. In any case, the first international treaty using the term precautionary principle came about after international conferences discussing the protection of the North Sea. At those meetings, Germany championed the concept.

Initially, the parties did not even use the term “precaution,” but agreed that action should be taken to prevent

“damage to the environment can be irreversible or remediable only at considerable expense and over long periods and that, therefore, coastal states and the EEC must not wait for proof of harmful effects before taking action.”

In an interview with Business Insider, Oltrogge said the emergence of SpaceX’s audacious plan, along with those of other companies — Iridium, OneWeb, Amazon’s Project Kuiper, and even Apple included — spurred him and his colleagues to study the ramifications of large constellations.

(The word “megaconstellations” is often used, but Oltrogge eschews the term because “mega” implies millions of satellites. “There’s nobody today proposing a million satellites,” he said.)

Earth’s lower orbit, already crowded with tens of thousands of satellites, may soon choke with many more, underscoring a need for stringent laws regarding the use of shared orbital space, according to new research.

More specifically, experts believe more than a million satellites are headed to low-Earth orbit. To arrive at that figure, researchers studied recent filings in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) database, which is a United Nations agency responsible for granting spaces in orbit for satellite use. To launch and operate satellite populations, nations are required to submit relevant information to the ITU.

The records show nations worldwide have proposed launching over a million satellites distributed across 300 “megaconstellations,” which are vast networks of satellites that work together to provide internet services. The proposed satellites are 115 times higher than the number of functional satellites currently circling Earth, the new study finds.
