Research shows that young Black girls are frequently seen and thought of as stronger, older, and more knowledgeable about the world around them than their white peers, and that plays out in how Black girls are supported—or not—in school.
Young girls of color and their white peers who have the same misbehaviors in class are treated very differently. Black girls are more likely to face severe penalties and are up to 10 times more likely to be suspended from school. Another study found that police used excessive force against teenage girls of color. The data doesn’t directly link the harsh treatment of Black girls to the stereotype, but it’s clear that the Strong Black Woman perception impacts their reality. ]
Gay announced her resignation earlier this month, following several months of criticism over Harvard’s response to complaints of mounting antisemitism in the wake of protests over Israel’s war in Gaza, as well as allegations of Gay’s plagiarism in her previous academic work. In a statement, Gay—the Ivy League’s first Black president—said she would resign
“so that our community can navigate this moment of extraordinary challenge with a focus on the institution rather than any individual.”
Gay has faced scathing complaints over the university’s handling of largely pro-Palestinian protests, with Ackman calling for her resignation and billionaire investor Len Blavatnik suspending his donations to the university. Lawmakers have also targeted Gay following a contentious congressional hearing last month on antisemitism, with a group of 74 House members from both parties calling on the university to fire Gay after she said that calls for the genocide of Jewish people could violate the school’s code of conduct “depending on the context.”

The European Union (EU) has been actively pursuing strategies to regulate so-called hate speech and disinformation online, with the aim of creating a safer digital environment. This involves a complex intersection of regulatory frameworks at both the national and EU levels.
The proposed version of the regulation by the EC pushes tech companies to inject “backdoors” or leverage “client-side scanning”, to scrutinize the content of all encrypted communications for evidence of child sexual abuse. However, these companies are forceful in their conviction that despite its purpose to combat cybercrime, the mechanism could be swiftly utilized by offenders, “compromising security for everyone.”

The decisions by at least 11 donor countries to suspend funding to the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), following allegations that individual staff members were involved in the 7 October attacks in southern Israel, will deal a devastating blow to more than two million refugees in the occupied Gaza Strip for whom the organization serves as a sole lifeline, said Amnesty International. The organization is urging states to reverse their decisions and refrain from suspending funding to UNRWA.
“It is deeply shocking – indeed inhumane – that several governments have taken decisions that will cause further suffering to two million Palestinians, who are already facing the risk of genocide and an engineered famine just days after the International Court of Justice ruling concluded that the survival of Palestinians in Gaza is at risk. It is particularly appalling that such action has been taken over allegations concerning 12 employees out of UNRWA’s entire staff of 30,000,” said Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International’s Secretary General.

While PM Benjamin Netanyahu has so far denied Israel’s plans to occupy Gaza, ministers in own Cabinet have joined thousands of colonial settlers in calls to “return” to the Strip.
On January 28, at least 27 Israeli lawmakers and government officials, including 12 ministers, participated in the “Conference for the Victory of Israel– Settlements Bring Security” held in occupied East Jerusalem. The event, which was attended by thousands of Zionist colonial settlers, rabbis, and settlement “activists”, called for the building of Jewish-only settlements in Gaza.
“God willing, we will settle and we will be victorious”, declared Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich.

Even the International Court of Justice (ICJ) was incapable of calling for a ceasefire, which is a practical preliminary step towards halting Israel’s genocide. In a matter of hours following the ICJ ruling, Israel launched an attack on UNRWA which led to several Western countries, many of whom are major donors, to cut funding to the agency, leading to one of the most visible acts of complicity in Israel’s genocide against Palestinians so far.
Not only that. A conference organised by the far right-wing settlement movement Nahala themed “Settlement Brings Victory and Security” was attended by Israeli Knesset members, 12 of which were Likud members. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir called for settlement expansion in Gaza, while former Knesset Member Moshe Feiglin called for Gaza to “be flourished with Jewish villages and Jewish cities.” The conference reinforced the so-called “voluntary migration” of Palestinians which several Israeli officials and diplomats have publicly endorsed and called for.
