The data from the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) shows that in 2021 annual wages for the top 1% reached $819,324, which was up 9.4% compared to 2020. How much do you need to earn to be in the top 0.1%? A hefty $3,312,693, which is 18.5% more than that group earned a year before. Wages for the bottom 90% dropped by 0.2% over the same period, with an average income of $36,571.
Historically, the rich have become richer faster than the rest of the population. EPI research has found that from 1979 to 2021, the top 1% saw their wages grow by 206.3% and the top 0.1% by more than twice as much—465.1%. Wages for the bottom 90% only grew 28.7% in the same time period.

Studies show the world’s wealthiest individuals’ investments account for up to 70 per cent of their emissions. Oxfam used public data to calculate the investment emissions of billionaires with a stake of more than 10 per cent in a corporation, by allocating them a share of the reported emissions of the corporates in which they are invested in proportion to their stake.
The study also found billionaires had an average of 14 per cent of their investments in polluting industries such as non-renewable energy and materials like cement. This is twice the average for investments in the Standard and Poor 500. Only one billionaire in the sample had investments in a renewable energy company.
The choice of investments billionaires make is shaping the future of our economy, for example, by backing high carbon infrastructure – locking in high emissions for decades to come. The study found that if the billionaires in the sample moved their investments to a fund with stronger environmental and social standards, it could reduce the intensity of their emissions by up to four times.

Facebook’s parent company, Meta, knowingly allows millions of children under age 13 to use Instagram, but “zealously” hides that fact from the public, according to a newly unredacted legal complaint filed against the company and reported by The New York Times.
Although Meta received more than 1 million reports of underage users, it disabled only “a fraction” of the accounts and instead “routinely continued to collect” children’s personal information — including locations and email addresses — without parental consent, the unredacted document alleges.
The company also purposefully uses its technology “to entice, engage, and ultimately ensnare youth and teens” and publicly misrepresents its platforms as safe for youth, while concealing its own internal research showing that users experienced harms on its platforms at high rates.
These practices violated the federal children’s privacy law and California’s false advertising and unfair competition laws, according to the complaint.
“Within the company, Meta’s actual knowledge that millions of Instagram users are under the age of 13 is an open secret that is routinely documented, rigorously analyzed and confirmed,” the complaint noted.

Israeli troops detained a 12-year-old Palestinian child after storming his family home in a refugee camp in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday.
The boy, Karim Ghawanmeh, vomited out of fear when he realised the army wanted to arrest him, his brother Othman told Middle East Eye.
Othman said Israeli forces blew open the family’s old house in the Jalazone refugee camp, north of Ramallah, at dawn.
The family had recently moved out of the house, so the soldiers phoned Karim’s father when they didn’t find anyone there.
